Dr. Mallard is shocked to hear the corpse of a man found with files on various navy officers died in dubious accidents is presumed to be that of his English study buddy Angus Clarke, now a hotel chain owner, whom he never spoke since a bitter romantic row, but finds in autopsy it can't be him. Officially on leave, Ducky informally accompanies Bishop investigating in London, where his first true love Maggie is now a fresh widow and explains she regretted not having chosen him over Angus, and finds Angus's professional right hand a dangerous manipulator. Back in the US, the team looks into financially shaky Angus's business partner's dirty dealings.

Relax.
Everything's going according to plan.
I've been to the smithsonian,
Mount vernon,
And a dreadful abomination called foamhenge.
If anybody's following me,
They'll think I'm just sightseeing.
We're good.
Man (over phone): Foamhenge?
Yes, it's an actual replica of stonehenge,
Except it's all made out of foam.
Pure disaster.
Just when you think
You've seen everything...

That's getting old.
I'm not not overprotective.
Okay. So, I can date him?
Absolutely not, you don't know a thing about this guy.
But that's something you two can get into a lot of trouble for.
Gibbs: Trouble for what?
Data in that file is straight from the internet, boss.
Yeah, we didn't use a single law enforcement database.

Cops found fresh tire tracks over there.
Looks like a second vehicle was parked.

Ducky: And don't spare the details.

Victim appears to be of advanced age.
On first glance, I would say
He was ejected from the car in the explosion.
Jimmy: Was he in the navy?
Don't know, still waiting on an e-mail back
With the vehicle registration.
Why was ncis called?
'cause of this.
Police found it hidden under the spare in the trunk.
Which is probably why it survived.
Tony: What is it?
Troop deployment orders.
Tony: What's he doing with those?
I'm sorry, did I get here before you?
I got that vehicle information.
It's a rental registered to an angus clarke.
Oh, I knew an angus clarke growing up.
Yeah, he lived on a beautiful tree-lined street.
Came from a wealthy family in, uh...
Beaconsfield?
Yes. In fact...
Six-one-two-three...
Clifford avenue.
Duck, who was angus clarke?
My best friend.
When we were kids, we used to play a game
Called "what's the time, mister wolf?"
You would know it as "tag."
To say I enjoyed it immensely would be an understatement.
In fact, I don't think I've enjoyed anything as much since.
How long has it been, duck?
(chuckles)
Too long.
You don't need to do this.
We can get somebody else.
No, we can't.
When kate was taken from us,
And director shepard, mike franks...
Their autopsies were all I had left of them.
If I wasn't willing to give up those last moments with them,
I'm sure as hell not now.
I already washed the body and logged the superficial wounds.
Thank you.
And I took x-rays, including dental,
To verify the identity.
Doctor, I do have one more question.
What happens when frogs park illegally?
Excuse me?
I looked up a couple of jokes before you got here.
I thought it might help cheer you up.
It's a thought I'm regretting right now.
What happens when frogs park illegally?
They get... Toad.
Yeah, well, let's...
Start the autopsy.
I couldn't agree more.
Now, wait a minute.
You sure these were taken of him? Yes.
I took 'em myself. Give me that.
Oh...
This gentleman
Has both his original central incisors.
Is that a problem? Angus didn't.
This isn't angus!
His two front teeth were replaced by dental implants
After they were knocked out in a fight.
Are you sure? Yes. (laughs)
I was the one that knocked them out.
Man (over p.A.): Train now arriving on platform five,
317 for k street. Platform five...
The one month, unlimited rides across the continent.
Oh, lucky you.
Well, last thing I'm going to need is your name.
Donnie mallard, and I'm somewhat in a hurry, sir.
Mallard! Like the mallard song of oxford!
Sung once a century at a special ceremony.
I remember when I was a child... Sir...
My father used to talk about the first ceremony, oh, in 1901.
My pass, please.
Led by cosmo lang.
Sorry. Coming through. Most people don't realize...
I'm so sorry, sir-- this man's a doctor,
And he's needed in surgery immediately.
My apologies, and thank you for the fascinating insight.

I thought the old sod would never shut up.
What are you doing here? Well, father gave me the night off.
Before you disappear tomorrow. Ah, I've already eaten.
Oh, dear. Well, I suppose we'll just have to get plastered then.
Works for me. So, when do you report for basic training?
30 days-- as soon as I get back from my trip.
So, what I want to know is,
Why does somebody spend all that time
Learning to be a doctor,
And then he signs up to royal army medical corps?
'cause not all of us are set to inherit
The family fortune when we grow up.
Speaking of which, gonna have to go past daddy's hotel.
I left my wallet there.
Forget it. Forget what?
I know what you're up to. It is as plain as a pikestaff.
What am I up to? You clearly have arranged
Some sort of surprise going-away party
And are trying to lure me to the location
Knowing full well that I despise surprise parties.
Ah. Now, you see, I knew I wouldn't be able
To lure you to the hotel, so, um...
(whistling) all: Surprise!
Abby: You hear the good news?
Our victim is not ducky's best friend.
Well, that's good news for ducky's best friend.
I was trying to look at the positive.
And the dna sample that jimmy gave me.
And, then, hopefully, we can find out
Whose bestie this guy is.
I was able to identify
The source of the explosion.
It's a shell from an at4 anti-tank weapon.
How's that for overkill? You trace the source, abbs?
I'm trying, but the at4 is the most common
Anti-tank weapon in the world.
I did find intrigue, though, on what was left
Of our victim's car's navigation system.
He programmed ncis as his destination.
He was coming to the navy yard. Maybe he was
Returning those classified documents
To lost and found or something.
And that's not all he had on him.
The flash drive that we found
Was corrupted from the heat,
But I was able to reconstruct some of the file structures.
Our victim had dossiers on at least three naval officers.
Like, their photos, and their job descriptions.
All sorts of stuff. Anything in common?
Yeah. They're all dead. How?
It's not like they were murdered or anything.
Natural causes and accidents.
This guy had a car accident.
And a heart attack, this guy fell off the roof
When he was replacing a solar attic fan.
I mean, it's weird, right?
I mean, I thought I'd have some sort of theory,
But I've got nothing.
Oh. Except our victim's identity.
I'll take that.
Tony: Our victim is samuel colpepper.
British national, arrived last week on business.
Customs say he was traveling with this man.
That is ducky's friend angus.
Colpepper works for him.
He manages one of the hotels angus owns.
Apparently, he owns a few. Ducky's friend still stateside?
No. Flew back to England three days ago.
Colpepper stayed behind a couple of days
To do some shopping, judging by his credit card charges.
What were they doing here?
Uh, meeting with local businessmen.
That angus's office. They gave me a list of names.
But, gibbs, nobody's heard from angus since he got back.
Uk police are looking for him.
I made a few calls, too.
No luck. We know
Colpepper was coming to ncis.
It's a possibility he was coming to see you.
Duck?
Well, I can't imagine why an employee of angus's
Would have a list
Of deceased navy sailors,
Some classified material,
Or why he would be bringing it to me.
We got nothing. Well, then get something.
Interview all the businessmen angus and colpepper met with?
On it, boss. Mcgee,
Open up the files again. And make sure those accidents were really accidents.

I just nicked your brachial artery.
You'll be dead in
Less than 90 seconds.
I'm having trouble breathing.
Yes, that would be your dying of hypovolemic shock.
The sweating and chest pains are normal-- 70 seconds.
You have to do something. No, I don't.
But if you tell me why my best friend is dead,
I'll consider it.
60 seconds.
(groans) we were running
A prostitution ring out of angus's hotel.
My husband would never let you do that.
He didn't have a choice.
We told him if he ratted us out, we'd kill you.
But he was a sneaky one.
Angus found out that you were also
Running a smuggling ring in the u.S.
He tried to get the evidence to me.
He hoped that ncis would take you down.
That you'd go to jail and never know who sent you there.
Angus would be free.
But it didn't quite work out that way, did it?
We found his e-mail to colpepper.
Couldn't let him talk.
That's all I know.
Fix my arm already. No.
No, that's not all you know.
You said "we" were running a prostitution ring.
You're just an errand boy. A gopher.
Put in place to keep an eye on angus.
So who's really in charge?
Is it someone you're willing to die for?
If so,
You're welcome to be my guest.
(groaning, gasping quietly)
Agent gibbs,
Good to see you again.
May I introduce my new partner.
Mr. Kowolski finally saw the wisdom of my offer.
Hardly. The bank twisted my arm. I had no choice.
I wouldn't sign that paper, if I were you. Nah.
You don't want to be in business with a guy like him.
I beg your pardon?
You're not relocating to the u.S.--
You're expanding operations here.
I... What on earth are you talking about? That's...
At first we were wondering: What's this guy doing
With an import-export business?
But then we saw the list of chemicals
Your crew smuggled off a navy base.
Yeah, we're thinking meth.
(laughter)
Look at him go.
(gasps)
Back to square one, I guess.
Sorry about that.
Oh... Works for me.
(bells chiming)
Thanks so much.
Yeah, bummer about the taxi strike.
The sac from the ncis office
Is coming to take us to heathrow.
We have about... Half hour.
You want to head back to the hotel?
Ducky?
Everything okay?
I'm sorry, eleanor.
Uh, everything is, uh...
As it must be.
So how did you leave things with maggie?
I didn't.
I just left.
Without saying good-bye?
Maggie: Yes, without saying good-bye.
Living across the pond...
Hasn't done much for your manners.
I'll, uh...
I'll be right back.
So you came to say good-bye.
Feels familiar.
It shouldn't.
Didn't give me a chance last time.
Or to explain.
What was there to explain?
(indistinct announcements over p.A.)
(distant train whistle blowing)
Man (over p.A.): All passengers please board immediately.
It was the hardest day of my life,
Choosing between the two men that I loved.
I chose wrong.
No. Maggie...
Angus and I were
Wonderful friends but...
A horrible couple.
By the time I realized that, you were off to the war and...
And I was committed to the role of a good wife.
I thought you hated bow ties.
I do.
They're impossible to keep straight.
Why are you still...?
Why didn't you ever marry?
You had so much love to give.
A colleague and a very good friend of mine
Lost his soul mate.
And then he nearly wrecked his life
Marrying the wrong woman over and over,
Trying to find her again.
I...
Chose to skip that part.
So...
Now what?
I don't suppose it's good anymore.
Or is it?
What are you asking me?
To be honest, I don't know.
All I know is that I would like to stand here
With you a little longer.
Next to you.
And maybe...
Just not say anything.
