- [Danilo] Last time
on My Design Rules,
the first challenge
finished with a flurry
of last-minute work.
Team Habitat had
the most work to do,
and the stress was
driving them up
that grass-covered walls.
- Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo,
yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo!
My nerve!
Please, everybody out, out,
out, out, out, out, out out!
- [Danilo] Miraculously,
all three designed duos
finished in the Nick of time,
before the judges
had the tough task,
critiquing three stylishly,
different guests bedrooms.
In the end, Team
House and Leisure
won the first challenge
and bagged an extra 5,000
Rand added to their budget.
[upbeat music]
Welcome, to My Design Rules.
The interior design
reality series,
where winning means being
named South Africa's best new
interior design talent
and getting a 100,000
Rand cash prize.
A new week means a new design
adventure for our duos,
as they transform,
three cluster homes,
at the Eye of Africa, Gulf
and Residential Estate
from white box spaces
into lavish homes,
one room at a time.
And this one's next.
[upbeat music]
- Welcome back.
It's challenged time
again, contestants.
And for this one, challenge two,
you're really gonna have to
think outside of the box.
It's time to design and
decorate the spare room.
For this one, we're giving
you complete creative freedom.
However, there is one rule,
it may not be a bedroom.
All this creative freedom
might be a blessing
for some of you
or a curse for others.
But remember, that this
is somebody's future home.
So this will be both
practical and creative.
- This time around, every
team out of the way.
We are coming for that prize.
- You have two weeks,
to create something that
will wow the judges.
Go forth and design.
- We actually turning hours,
into a walking closet.
[laughing]
- Yeah.
- Simple, honest talks
about on walking in closets,
and I think it will fit very
perfect for the master suit.
[upbeat music]
- We've decided to go a
little bit intellectual.
- I mean, and do a
leopard's library.
'Cause we started with the zebra
now it's time to bring
in another big five,
the leopard, yes.
So, another week, another
challenge and another room.
- Sure, our leopards library.
- Without a leopard.
- Or a library. [laughing]
- Oh my lord we've got
a lot of work to do.
[both] Amanda
- Oh girl,
our queen is back.
- Yes.
- Yes.
- Amanda, we're so glad
you're out of hospital.
- Thank you.
- I hope it wasn't as
in our budget bickering
that sent you over to the moon.
- [laughing] Nothing
was like that.
- It's so good to see you.
- Hello.
- Our Queen Amanda, is
back, and we are with her
and discussing this
leopard's library.
- They'll be excited.
I mean, she's got
those reins tighter.
'Cause you said you wanted
to realize in a bad chill,
that we don't go over the top.
- Last time we were
shutting the front door,
this time we are
opening that front door.
So we're looking at doing
a leopard's library,
but we wanna keep
it quite clean.
- Minimalistic.
- Yes.
which is more in
line with habitat.
- And maybe pair run with
like the ornamentation.
- I love the ladder,
are you considering
using the ladder?
- And we want that ladder
to go all the way around.
- As we want our library
to go all the way
around the road back.
- That's great.
- Okay, so let me
show you our fabric
that we selected.
So, this is the fabric
that we came back with.
We are posturing chairs
that we're up-cycling.
- And so if I have anything
that might be our pulse,
that is our relationship,
which might end in
a big D, divorce.
'Cause I didn't know
he's doesn't know,
and we ended up with this one.
- Guys, to be honest,
I'm not crazy about
this fabric at all.
I think that a
Cavali leopard print
would be a lot more suitable.
- A bear.
What did I tell you?
- You told me, if
I want a Cavali,
I better not use that card.
[laughing]
[upbeat music]
- We haven't got a mentor
meeting today with Tiaan
and we are at the
furniture store
looking for an ottoman
and desk chair.
Someone on my side is
actually very worried
[chuckles] that we might
have to find exactly
what you're looking for.
- The problem is not
finding an Ottoman,
but it is finding
the right ottoman.
I mean, right now,
I'm not really exactly
sure what I want,
but I will know
it when I see it.
- So what's the
idea for this room?
Are you converting something
into something new?
Is it a repurposed room?
What's the thinking?
- So, we actually
thinking of creating
a walk in closet slash-
- Slash office space.
[both laughing]
- He actually gave me a hustle
because he just wanted
it to be a whole closet.
- A full dressing room.
- I think that's a great idea
that you guys have converted
the wardrobe into
a study as well.
So that you have a sense
of purpose with that room
and a multipurpose room.
So based on the judge's
criteria and critique last week,
your curtain solution
wasn't the best idea
or solution for that group.
So in order to get
it right this week,
what are you guys
thinking of doing?
- The current problem
we're having right now
is that door.
When it opens, it
opens against the wall.
- Onto the curtain.
- When we were designing,
we didn't think of that.
We need to find like a solution
that's gonna to sit
within sometimes-
- The frame of the window.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- So something-
- That filter in some light.
- Filter in, as in light.
- That's what I wanna say,
just be aware of the sunlight
that needs to come
into that room.
The guys had a very
interesting idea
to take a room and convert
it into a multipurpose space.
So it's gonna to be a wardrobe,
that's gonna be a study.
And I think it's a
clever use of space,
but it's also a way of expanding
on the home and offering
the home owner more than the
cookie cutter kind of shape
that they've been given.
So we've got great options here.
What are you looking for?
We've got something
with pattern.
We've got two
neutrals that square.
- [Tshepo] I don't see
anything here working at all.
- Are they're just
too dull for you.
- I feel like something
with more color would work,
something richer.
- Should we check online?
I'm sure there's something
perfect for this room.
Let's go get up, go.
- Tshepo In the house.
- So we shopping for an ottoman,
which seems to be
far more difficult
than what I thought originally.
Tshepo got a very clear
idea of what he wants.
It needs a tick of color,
texture and the shape.
I'm sure there's
something out there
that would suit
the room perfectly.
[upbeat music]
- [Mpho] Next challenge,
it's an open brief,
and we're ready to go.
- Yeah, and we have no
choice to do the music room
or a library, 'cause of
some of us are quiet-
- Oh, intellectual.
- We are readers.
[Mpho laughing]
- We are looking at Palm
trees for the planter.
And I'm very impressed
with the fact
that they're also keen
on a very large tree,
but the price is very important.
I would have gone skyrocketed,
but they concerned
about their budget.
I'm so glad you decided on a
Palm tree and that you're going
for one instead of two.
But if you get one, you
must make a statement.
- Definitely.
- It must be big.
- Annemarie shopping with us.
And she advises that we go for
a bigger Pula Palm tree.
Its quite big.
- You see, okay,
we have boots on.
So, we're gonna score that much.
- So I think it would be-
- I think it can go.
- [Annmarie] Do you
think it's too high?
- I think it's quite big.
- You know what?
No, I don't think so.
But maybe this one is better.
[bright upbeat music]
- We wanted to go with
a Bonzai in our room
because we wanted
the owner of the room
to have something to
do when he is thinking.
And so that he can
keep his fingers busy
while his mind is working.
So, what we're
looking for is palm-
- It 6,000 Rand one
or a 7,000 Rand one.
- [chuckles] No.
- Okay, no, no, no.
All jokes aside.
These are really beautiful,
but they're very expensive.
And unless you have an
Oriental theme in the room,
if there's something
Japanese or Chinese,
I wouldn't go for that.
Let's go and see if we
can get a thorn tree.
- Something local.
- Exactly.
[Mpho imitating
car engine roars]
[speaking in foreign language]
- Voila!
- These are beautiful,
nine-years-old.
- A what?
- This is nine years old.
- [Annmarie] Yes,
but how much is it?
- It's 550.
- 550, there's no bad.
- There's no bad.
- There's no bad.
- Are you sure this
is nine-years-old?
- They won't lie to us.
- We don't have to
decide right now.
So we're still gonna think
about it a little bit.
- I'm not sure if we
have time, because of-
- But we got the Palm tree.
- Yeah, perfect.
[upbeat music]
We actually have good options
of a carpet or the vinyl.
- Flooring?
- Flooring yes,
and someone over here,
having too many options,
it's a problem [laughing].
[upbeat music]
- Tshepo, I need you here.
[laughing]
What do you think
of this flooring?
- I liked the darker one,
but on second thoughts,
I think the lighter
one would work better,
but that one is still nice.
- There he goes again.
- Am not allowed to use my mind?
- No! [laughing]
- Am not the same person
I was 10 seconds ago.
So let me flourish.
I like that one.
But then let's rather
than look at the carpet.
I think that'll be better
for the dressing room.
- You know-
- You wanna walk on something
soft after dressing.
So yeah, let's go.
[upbeat music]
- Hi Ian, I'm definitely
at the right place
because we were
looking for a carpet,
something that's
comfortable underfoot
for our dressing room
slash office space.
So, Ian is advising us
just to make sure that we get
the carpet we really want.
'Cause we're looking for
something really light
that that's not gonna
dim down the room
since we were trying to keep
that whole everything
light in this space.
- Space, yes and wall
very warm and luxury.
[upbeat music]
- It seems all design
duos have gotten off
to a much more organized
start this time round.
But the key to unlocking the
potential of the spare room,
will mean our design duos
need to push the boundaries
of their creativity.
Their collaborative
efforts are up next.
[upbeat music]
[upbeat music]
One of the biggest
trends in design
is taking retro vintage
or antique items in decor
and giving them a new lease
on life in modern interiors.
Now that's the approach,
that Team Habitat I've taken
in their Leopard library,
and have started their
hunt for bargains
at a local secondhand bookstore.
[bouncy music]
[air whooshing]
- We are ready to roar,
for our Leopards library.
[meowing]
- Recording around
like leopards.
- Hunting for those
book bargains.
- In every category like-
- Brides, always the
bridesmaid, never the bride.
- Pets.
- Travel.
- Cooking.
- Chicken.
- Of beef man.
- Wildlife.
- Architecture.
- Biography.
- Design.
- Every single category
you can think of,
that you would find
in the library,
We are hunting for that book.
- Minus the librarian.
[laughing]
- Man, you are often rude.
[laughing]
- We are, picking every
book you can think of,
stacks on stacks on stacks,
book, book, book, book.
- I know that'd be
not much readers.
Those books got our attention.
And we-
- Had a little power
nap and opened up a book
just to calm our nerves.
[upbeat music]
- [Danilo] On the
other side of Joburg,
Team Visi are embarking on
a creative collaboration,
to capture the essence,
of the open jungle for their
multipurpose study space.
- We decided to
use a photographer,
called Mpho Mokgadi,
for a collaboration,
and Lesego hasn't met Mpho,
so, I'm introducing
Lesego to Mpho.
I've worked with
Mpho Mokgadi before,
and he's quite an
amazing photographer.
So the idea is to
show people that
a collabo is not only
about furniture and other stuff.
And pictures also play a big
part inside it into a space.
- Do you know about the space?
- Oh, I shoot a lot of like
urban spaces, architecture.
- That's perfect,
that's perfect.
So what we're trying
to do in our room
is we were trying to make it
a more of a like concrete yes,
but we want it to be a
safe place basically.
And we feel like sometimes,
Joburg is the safe place.
- Absolutely.
- For certain people
- So, Mpho we're gonna be
shooting a night photos
and also day light photos.
So, are you good, prepared?
- Yeah, am perfect man,
I'm always ready.
- We can start
with one shoot here,
what do you think?
- Yeah, of course, man.
- Awesome, lets do this.
- Sure.
I am collaborating
with Mpho and Lesego,
actually Mpho approached
me to sort of do
a collabo with them.
And I was really excited
'cause I've known Mpho
for quite some time now,
we studied together.
Since I'm an Urban
Space photographer,
and I do a lot of architecture,
I was excited that I'm
gonna have to match my work
with what they're doing,
in terms of like their design
into a library slash studio.
And I was quite excited
to sort of bring
my sense of style
into it as well.
- Our brief is to
basically capture the city,
from a young
person's perspective.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- And we also want to show,
the angles of the buildings,
Old Johannesburg,
New Johannesburg,
absolutely everything
that we've see
as young people, in Joburg.
- [Danilo] Team Visi
is blissfully unaware
that they're not
the only design duel
who has approached
photographer Mpho Mokgadi,
for a collaboration.
Could this cause conflict
between the rival duos?
- Basically what
we have in mind is,
for one of your works to
lean against this wall,
since we can be behaving
like a floating desk.
- Yeah, interesting.
- So I think, can we
look at some of the stuff
you have for us?
- Sure, I mean this is my
recent travel to Barcelona.
It was so funded.
I just decided to just go
and like scouter buildings
and Barcelona just came my mind.
- There's one building we saw.
- Yeah, this one.
- That's what we loved.
- Yes, the Hotel
Fuda in Barcelona.
- It looks like fabric,
like the textures
of the building.
- It does
- It does
So, I guess your compliment
is all your spaces wall
'cause of the texture.
- Mpho, that's definitely
the one that we're going for.
Would it be able
to print it for us
and then we'll collect
it to frame it?
- Yeah, it's a limited edition,
So, only a few people
have this photograph.
So, its exciting.
- Even better.
[group laughing]
- We really appreciate
that, Mpho, thank you.
- Thanks so much, thank you.
[soft music]
So as we were
working on with him,
Mpho designer comes over,
and tells us that he's
using the same photographer
and we're like, "Oh, okay."
- Actually I wasn't surprised
to be honest. [laughing]
- And what is this?
- Oh, you guys are working
in the same project,
what a small world.
- Dude, aren't you
supposed do this with us?
I'm also doing a
collabo with Mpho,
are you guys aware.
[laughing]
- Well, we didn't realize
you're collaborating
with him as well.
- It's exciting to work
with both of you guys.
I mean, yeah.
- I'm not honored.
- I'm not even happy with
you now. [group laughing]
- But yeah, it's fine.
Let's see how it's gonna look.
- Yeah.
- Gotcha.
- Cool.
- So, I was not quite
pleased with what happened,
but then what I think,
maybe it's all about how we're
going to implement his work
into our own space
and how they are going
to implement it as well.
- Goodness, it seems
like it's game on,
in the battle of the
collab's between Team Visi
and Team House in Leisure.
It really does beg the question,
who will rule at
the end of the day?
After the break, we check
in on our design duos,
at the halfway mark, of
the spare room challenge.
[upbeat music]
[upbeat music]
Welcome back to My Design Rules.
For the spare room challenge,
our design duos are given
total creative freedom.
But the space may
not be a bedroom.
They've come up with some
amazing design ideas.
So it's time to pop in and
see how they're coming along.
[upbeat music]
Time management, was
a huge learning curve
for all the duos in
the previous challenge.
With loads of cupboards
to be installed,
Team House and Leisure,
made certain that
this mammoth task,
got underway as
soon as possible.
Yoo-hoo! Anybody home?
Hello Team House and Leisure.
- Hello Danilo.
- Winners of challenge one.
How's it going?
[flower vase falls]
- Whoopsie!
- That's interesting.
All right, so they
clearly are ready
for the end of a challenge two.
Is that okay?
- It's okay.
- It's fine.
- I'm just gonna to sit
here and not break anything
as the drama unfold.
- My goodness.
- Everything out here
and the rest of it
on the floor, interesting.
All right, so, how through
with the challenge,
how's it going?
You guys had an extra 5,000
Rand to spend on your room.
How's it all been panning
out, is gonna be on time?
- So far, everything's
looking good
'cause they're busy with that
building cabinets right now.
And the idea was to have
like a walking closet,
since we moved like
the built-in cabinets
from the main bedroom.
So, just to make it a
bit more interesting,
no a traditional walking closet,
we added like a little,
informal office space.
It makes the space much
more multifunctional.
So as you walk into the space,
the full cup-board is gonna
be the office setting area.
And then, you realize
that it's more than
just an office set up,
there are built-in
cabinets as well.
- Which are also hidden,
because there's a mirror finish
and it basically reflects
the rest of the room
and it adds more lighting,
'cause it bounces that light.
And also we've got
the chandeliers,
which we're very excited about,
like they're coming all
the way from Cape Town.
And they're going to hang
almost like a spider pattern.
And then we also have
got custom bulbs,
which also they're different,
like we paid attention
to the detail
that they have carrying tie
in these each one of them.
- Right, I wanna go
take a look, can I?
- Go for it.
Actually, we should show you by.
[laughing]
[upbeat music]
- It's supple, plain
colors are great.
I like what they've
done with the space.
My worry always is that it's
a little bit unconventional,
like who would have an
office and a walking closet
at the same time.
But I think in so many ways,
perhaps it's multipurpose.
Well done guys.
Hope you guys like it.
[upbeat music]
[bright upbeat music]
And here we are.
I'm very excited for this one,
Team Habitat always have the
biggest and boldest ideas.
[upbeat music]
What!
Oh guys, I expected
so much more.
There's literally just
concrete on the floor
and paint on the walls and
not even that complete.
Oh my heavens!
Abiah, Brad.
[upbeat music]
- Why is no one ready?
You plan, we plan.
- [Danilo] Abiah, Brad.
- No one's [laughing]
- Guys what the heck!
What's going on?
- Well, as you can see,
absolutely nothing.
- What happened?
- Sure, I'm trying to
hide from you Danilo.
- Last time, we learned
that you do you plan
and then you stick to the plan.
This time around, we
step our plan I mean,
we were even early
for the first time
and no one's here.
- But you guys had a
whole another challenge
before this one to
learn these lessons.
Why are you still
behind schedule?
- No, honestly, it's like,
it's not supposed to blame.
It's just one of those.
We really dropped a
really strict like plan.
So if someone doesn't arrive,
I guess you just
gotta take the hammer
into your own hands.
- And today we're going D and Y.
- Yeah.
- Okay, well let's
think optimistically,
what still needs to be done,
What's the vision,
what's the plan?
- A library.
- [Abia] That whole
room needs to be shut.
- Hitting in some nails,
not painting our
nails this time.
- And then we start to
decorate those shelves,
I mean we ordered
shelves four days.
So it's like, we're not
just gonna leave them plain
'cause we do like to give back,
but then it's like,
again in the same
situation as last time.
I will be honest and it's like-
- Big dreams, take
big plans and,
[laughing]
a lot of stress.
- And if you guys don't
complete all of this,
what happens if you lose again?
- Uh-uh, I'll be damned
if we lose again,
no, no, no, no, no, no, no!
[upbeat music]
- [Danilo] Last week,
Team Visi were critiqued
or not showing more creativity
and personality in their room.
This time they're
expressing their style
with a fun paint technique
as part of a fetal wall.
- Good, be careful of this.
- So Team Visi getting
their hands dirty.
Hello, you two.
- Yep.
- All right Danilo.
- Hi Danilo.
- This looks pretty interesting.
As hard at work
as you guys look,
I'm very worried and just
see paint on the walls,
nothing else is in here.
You guys are gonna be done?
- We gonna get
everything done on time.
It's all about time management.
I think we're on
the right check.
So, we're not stressing.
Our furniture's waiting
for us in the other room.
- Exactly.
- You can ask Lesego.
- So we have everything here.
We just need to put it together
as soon as our floors are done.
- This looks interesting.
Tell me about what the plan is
with this piece in the wall.
- We're doing like a
painting technique effect,
which is gonna
look very awesome.
Just, give us two hours
and we will be done.
[Lesego laughing]
- What is the idea then
of the whole space?
- So this room is basically
gonna be a safe place
for our clients.
We want him to come in
here at rest and relax.
He enjoys music.
He enjoys photographs.
He enjoys studying, reading.
So what we're gonna do is
have a study slash music room
slash library where
he can just relax.
So on this wall here,
we're gonna display one
of his prized photos,
which was a collaboration
we did with Mpho
Mokgadi on photographs.
- Around Josie.
- Yeah.
- One thing I've always wanted
to do is get my hand involved
in the artwork.
So can I add my two cents?
- You can just...
Let me put it like
a bit of this.
- And then sprayer up.
- And then you can go,
yeah, there we go.
- [Both] Look at that.
- Hey now.
[laughing]
- Lovely guys, we'll
get back to it.
- Thanks Danilo.
- Good luck,
I wanna see a finished product.
I want it to be brilliant.
- Thank you Danilo.
We're promising you the best.
- Cheers!
[upbeat music]
- [Danilo] True to their word,
the pace of work does indeed
quicken at all three homes.
There's a real sense of purpose
as the tradesman bring
the duos vision to life,
and it's exciting to see
the spare rooms take shape
as each specialist
adds the input.
[upbeat music]
Next time we reveal
the spare rooms
and it's anyone's
guess, that Team Habitat
will get the victory
they feel they deserve.
Or will they even
be done on time?
Plus, whose photographic collabo
will come out on top
between Team Visi
and Team House and Leisure.
At the end of the day,
the judges will rule.
All of that on the coming
episode of My Design Rules.
[upbeat music]

the first challenge
finished with a flurry

It's challenged time
again, contestants.
And for this one, challenge two,
you're really gonna have to
think outside of the box.
It's time to design and
decorate the spare room.
For this one, we're giving
you complete creative freedom.
However, there is one rule,
it may not be a bedroom.
All this creative freedom
might be a blessing
for some of you
or a curse for others.
But remember, that this
is somebody's future home.
So this will be both
practical and creative.
- This time around, every
team out of the way.
We are coming for that prize.
- You have two weeks,
to create something that
will wow the judges.
Go forth and design.
- We actually turning hours,
into a walking closet.
[laughing]
- Yeah.
- Simple, honest talks
about on walking in closets,
and I think it will fit very
perfect for the master suit.
[upbeat music]
- We've decided to go a
little bit intellectual.
- I mean, and do a
leopard's library.
'Cause we started with the zebra
now it's time to bring
in another big five,
the leopard, yes.
So, another week, another
challenge and another room.
- Sure, our leopards library.
- Without a leopard.
- Or a library. [laughing]
- Oh my lord we've got
a lot of work to do.
[both] Amanda
- Oh girl,
our queen is back.
- Yes.
- Yes.
- Amanda, we're so glad
you're out of hospital.
- Thank you.
- I hope it wasn't as
in our budget bickering
that sent you over to the moon.
- [laughing] Nothing
was like that.
- It's so good to see you.
- Hello.
- Our Queen Amanda, is
back, and we are with her
and discussing this
leopard's library.
- They'll be excited.
I mean, she's got
those reins tighter.
'Cause you said you wanted
to realize in a bad chill,
that we don't go over the top.
- Last time we were
shutting the front door,
this time we are
opening that front door.
So we're looking at doing
a leopard's library,
but we wanna keep
it quite clean.
- Minimalistic.
- Yes.
which is more in
line with habitat.
- And maybe pair run with
like the ornamentation.
- I love the ladder,
are you considering
using the ladder?
- And we want that ladder
to go all the way around.
- As we want our library
to go all the way
around the road back.
- That's great.
- Okay, so let me
show you our fabric
that we selected.
So, this is the fabric
that we came back with.
We are posturing chairs
that we're up-cycling.
- And so if I have anything
that might be our pulse,
that is our relationship,
which might end in
a big D, divorce.
'Cause I didn't know
he's doesn't know,
and we ended up with this one.
- Guys, to be honest,
I'm not crazy about
this fabric at all.
I think that a
Cavali leopard print
would be a lot more suitable.
- A bear.
What did I tell you?
- You told me, if
I want a Cavali,
I better not use that card.
[laughing]
[upbeat music]
- We haven't got a mentor
meeting today with Tiaan
and we are at the
furniture store
looking for an ottoman
and desk chair.
Someone on my side is
actually very worried
[chuckles] that we might
have to find exactly
what you're looking for.
- The problem is not
finding an Ottoman,
but it is finding
the right ottoman.
I mean, right now,
I'm not really exactly
sure what I want,
but I will know
it when I see it.
- So what's the
idea for this room?
Are you converting something
into something new?
Is it a repurposed room?
What's the thinking?
- So, we actually
thinking of creating
a walk in closet slash-
- Slash office space.
[both laughing]
- He actually gave me a hustle
because he just wanted
it to be a whole closet.
- A full dressing room.
- I think that's a great idea
that you guys have converted
the wardrobe into
a study as well.
So that you have a sense
of purpose with that room
and a multipurpose room.
So based on the judge's
criteria and critique last week,
your curtain solution
wasn't the best idea
or solution for that group.
So in order to get
it right this week,
what are you guys
thinking of doing?
- The current problem
we're having right now
is that door.
When it opens, it
opens against the wall.
- Onto the curtain.
- When we were designing,
we didn't think of that.
We need to find like a solution
that's gonna to sit
within sometimes-
- The frame of the window.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- So something-
- That filter in some light.
- Filter in, as in light.
- That's what I wanna say,
just be aware of the sunlight
that needs to come
into that room.
The guys had a very
interesting idea
to take a room and convert
it into a multipurpose space.
So it's gonna to be a wardrobe,
that's gonna be a study.
And I think it's a
clever use of space,
but it's also a way of expanding
on the home and offering
the home owner more than the
cookie cutter kind of shape
that they've been given.
So we've got great options here.
What are you looking for?
We've got something
with pattern.
We've got two
neutrals that square.
- [Tshepo] I don't see
anything here working at all.
- Are they're just
too dull for you.
- I feel like something
with more color would work,
something richer.
- Should we check online?
I'm sure there's something
perfect for this room.
Let's go get up, go.
- Tshepo In the house.
- So we shopping for an ottoman,
which seems to be
far more difficult
than what I thought originally.
Tshepo got a very clear
idea of what he wants.
It needs a tick of color,
texture and the shape.
I'm sure there's
something out there
that would suit
the room perfectly.
[upbeat music]
- [Mpho] Next challenge,
it's an open brief,
and we're ready to go.
- Yeah, and we have no
choice to do the music room
or a library, 'cause of
some of us are quiet-
- Oh, intellectual.
- We are readers.
[Mpho laughing]
- We are looking at Palm
trees for the planter.
And I'm very impressed
with the fact
that they're also keen
on a very large tree,
but the price is very important.
I would have gone skyrocketed,
but they concerned
about their budget.
I'm so glad you decided on a
Palm tree and that you're going
for one instead of two.
But if you get one, you
must make a statement.
- Definitely.
- It must be big.
- Annemarie shopping with us.
And she advises that we go for
a bigger Pula Palm tree.
Its quite big.
- You see, okay,
we have boots on.
So, we're gonna score that much.
- So I think it would be-
- I think it can go.
- [Annmarie] Do you
think it's too high?
- I think it's quite big.
- You know what?
No, I don't think so.
But maybe this one is better.
[bright upbeat music]
- We wanted to go with
a Bonzai in our room
because we wanted
the owner of the room
to have something to
do when he is thinking.
And so that he can
keep his fingers busy
while his mind is working.
So, what we're
looking for is palm-
- It 6,000 Rand one
or a 7,000 Rand one.
- [chuckles] No.
- Okay, no, no, no.
All jokes aside.
These are really beautiful,
but they're very expensive.
And unless you have an
Oriental theme in the room,
if there's something
Japanese or Chinese,
I wouldn't go for that.
Let's go and see if we
can get a thorn tree.
- Something local.
- Exactly.
[Mpho imitating
car engine roars]
[speaking in foreign language]
- Voila!
- These are beautiful,
nine-years-old.
- A what?
- This is nine years old.
- [Annmarie] Yes,
but how much is it?
- It's 550.
- 550, there's no bad.
- There's no bad.
- There's no bad.
- Are you sure this
is nine-years-old?
- They won't lie to us.
- We don't have to
decide right now.
So we're still gonna think
about it a little bit.
- I'm not sure if we
have time, because of-
- But we got the Palm tree.
- Yeah, perfect.
[upbeat music]
We actually have good options
of a carpet or the vinyl.
- Flooring?
- Flooring yes,
and someone over here,
having too many options,
it's a problem [laughing].
[upbeat music]
- Tshepo, I need you here.
[laughing]
What do you think
of this flooring?
- I liked the darker one,
but on second thoughts,
I think the lighter
one would work better,
but that one is still nice.
- There he goes again.
- Am not allowed to use my mind?
- No! [laughing]
- Am not the same person
I was 10 seconds ago.
So let me flourish.
I like that one.
But then let's rather
than look at the carpet.
I think that'll be better
for the dressing room.
- You know-
- You wanna walk on something
soft after dressing.
So yeah, let's go.
[upbeat music]
- Hi Ian, I'm definitely
at the right place
because we were
looking for a carpet,
something that's
comfortable underfoot
for our dressing room
slash office space.
So, Ian is advising us
just to make sure that we get
the carpet we really want.
'Cause we're looking for
something really light
that that's not gonna
dim down the room
since we were trying to keep
that whole everything
light in this space.
- Space, yes and wall
very warm and luxury.
[upbeat music]
- It seems all design
duos have gotten off
to a much more organized
start this time round.
But the key to unlocking the
potential of the spare room,
will mean our design duos
need to push the boundaries
of their creativity.
Their collaborative
efforts are up next.
[upbeat music]
[upbeat music]
One of the biggest
trends in design
is taking retro vintage
or antique items in decor
and giving them a new lease
on life in modern interiors.
Now that's the approach,
that Team Habitat I've taken
in their Leopard library,
and have started their
hunt for bargains
at a local secondhand bookstore.
[bouncy music]
[air whooshing]
- We are ready to roar,
for our Leopards library.
[meowing]
- Recording around
like leopards.
- Hunting for those
book bargains.
- In every category like-
- Brides, always the
bridesmaid, never the bride.
- Pets.
- Travel.
- Cooking.
- Chicken.
- Of beef man.
- Wildlife.
- Architecture.
- Biography.
- Design.
- Every single category
you can think of,
that you would find
in the library,
We are hunting for that book.
- Minus the librarian.
[laughing]
- Man, you are often rude.
[laughing]
- We are, picking every
book you can think of,
stacks on stacks on stacks,
book, book, book, book.
- I know that'd be
not much readers.
Those books got our attention.
And we-
- Had a little power
nap and opened up a book
just to calm our nerves.
[upbeat music]
- [Danilo] On the
other side of Joburg,
Team Visi are embarking on
a creative collaboration,
to capture the essence,
of the open jungle for their
multipurpose study space.
- We decided to
use a photographer,
called Mpho Mokgadi,
for a collaboration,
and Lesego hasn't met Mpho,
so, I'm introducing
Lesego to Mpho.
I've worked with
Mpho Mokgadi before,
and he's quite an
amazing photographer.
So the idea is to
show people that
a collabo is not only
about furniture and other stuff.
And pictures also play a big
part inside it into a space.
- Do you know about the space?
- Oh, I shoot a lot of like
urban spaces, architecture.
- That's perfect,
that's perfect.
So what we're trying
to do in our room
is we were trying to make it
a more of a like concrete yes,
but we want it to be a
safe place basically.
And we feel like sometimes,
Joburg is the safe place.
- Absolutely.
- For certain people
- So, Mpho we're gonna be
shooting a night photos
and also day light photos.
So, are you good, prepared?
- Yeah, am perfect man,
I'm always ready.
- We can start
with one shoot here,
what do you think?
- Yeah, of course, man.
- Awesome, lets do this.
- Sure.
I am collaborating
with Mpho and Lesego,
actually Mpho approached
me to sort of do
a collabo with them.
And I was really excited
'cause I've known Mpho
for quite some time now,
we studied together.
Since I'm an Urban
Space photographer,
and I do a lot of architecture,
I was excited that I'm
gonna have to match my work
with what they're doing,
in terms of like their design
into a library slash studio.
And I was quite excited
to sort of bring
my sense of style
into it as well.
- Our brief is to
basically capture the city,
from a young
person's perspective.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- And we also want to show,
the angles of the buildings,
Old Johannesburg,
New Johannesburg,
absolutely everything
that we've see
as young people, in Joburg.
- [Danilo] Team Visi
is blissfully unaware
that they're not
the only design duel
who has approached
photographer Mpho Mokgadi,
for a collaboration.
Could this cause conflict
between the rival duos?
- Basically what
we have in mind is,
for one of your works to
lean against this wall,
since we can be behaving
like a floating desk.
- Yeah, interesting.
- So I think, can we
look at some of the stuff
you have for us?
- Sure, I mean this is my
recent travel to Barcelona.
It was so funded.
I just decided to just go
and like scouter buildings
and Barcelona just came my mind.
- There's one building we saw.
- Yeah, this one.
- That's what we loved.
- Yes, the Hotel
Fuda in Barcelona.
- It looks like fabric,
like the textures
of the building.
- It does
- It does
So, I guess your compliment
is all your spaces wall
'cause of the texture.
- Mpho, that's definitely
the one that we're going for.
Would it be able
to print it for us
and then we'll collect
it to frame it?
- Yeah, it's a limited edition,
So, only a few people
have this photograph.
So, its exciting.
- Even better.
[group laughing]
- We really appreciate
that, Mpho, thank you.
- Thanks so much, thank you.
[soft music]
So as we were
working on with him,
Mpho designer comes over,
and tells us that he's
using the same photographer
and we're like, "Oh, okay."
- Actually I wasn't surprised
to be honest. [laughing]
- And what is this?
- Oh, you guys are working
in the same project,
what a small world.
- Dude, aren't you
supposed do this with us?
I'm also doing a
collabo with Mpho,
are you guys aware.
[laughing]
- Well, we didn't realize
you're collaborating
with him as well.
- It's exciting to work
with both of you guys.
I mean, yeah.
- I'm not honored.
- I'm not even happy with
you now. [group laughing]
- But yeah, it's fine.
Let's see how it's gonna look.
- Yeah.
- Gotcha.
- Cool.
- So, I was not quite
pleased with what happened,
but then what I think,
maybe it's all about how we're
going to implement his work
into our own space
and how they are going
to implement it as well.
- Goodness, it seems
like it's game on,
in the battle of the
collab's between Team Visi
and Team House in Leisure.
It really does beg the question,
who will rule at
the end of the day?
After the break, we check
in on our design duos,
at the halfway mark, of
the spare room challenge.
[upbeat music]
[upbeat music]
Welcome back to My Design Rules.
For the spare room challenge,
our design duos are given
total creative freedom.
But the space may
not be a bedroom.
They've come up with some
amazing design ideas.
So it's time to pop in and
see how they're coming along.
[upbeat music]
Time management, was
a huge learning curve
for all the duos in
the previous challenge.
With loads of cupboards
to be installed,
Team House and Leisure,
made certain that
this mammoth task,
got underway as
soon as possible.
Yoo-hoo! Anybody home?
Hello Team House and Leisure.
- Hello Danilo.
- Winners of challenge one.
How's it going?
[flower vase falls]
- Whoopsie!
- That's interesting.
All right, so they
clearly are ready
for the end of a challenge two.
Is that okay?
- It's okay.
- It's fine.
- I'm just gonna to sit
here and not break anything
as the drama unfold.
- My goodness.
- Everything out here
and the rest of it
on the floor, interesting.
All right, so, how through
with the challenge,
how's it going?
You guys had an extra 5,000
Rand to spend on your room.
How's it all been panning
out, is gonna be on time?
- So far, everything's
looking good
'cause they're busy with that
building cabinets right now.
And the idea was to have
like a walking closet,
since we moved like
the built-in cabinets
from the main bedroom.
So, just to make it a
bit more interesting,
no a traditional walking closet,
we added like a little,
informal office space.
It makes the space much
more multifunctional.
So as you walk into the space,
the full cup-board is gonna
be the office setting area.
And then, you realize
that it's more than
just an office set up,
there are built-in
cabinets as well.
- Which are also hidden,
because there's a mirror finish
and it basically reflects
the rest of the room
and it adds more lighting,
'cause it bounces that light.
And also we've got
the chandeliers,
which we're very excited about,
like they're coming all
the way from Cape Town.
And they're going to hang
almost like a spider pattern.
And then we also have
got custom bulbs,
which also they're different,
like we paid attention
to the detail
that they have carrying tie
in these each one of them.
- Right, I wanna go
take a look, can I?
- Go for it.
Actually, we should show you by.
[laughing]
[upbeat music]
- It's supple, plain
colors are great.
I like what they've
done with the space.
My worry always is that it's
a little bit unconventional,
like who would have an
office and a walking closet
at the same time.
But I think in so many ways,
perhaps it's multipurpose.
Well done guys.
Hope you guys like it.
[upbeat music]
[bright upbeat music]
And here we are.
I'm very excited for this one,
Team Habitat always have the
biggest and boldest ideas.
[upbeat music]
What!
Oh guys, I expected
so much more.
There's literally just
concrete on the floor
and paint on the walls and
not even that complete.
Oh my heavens!
Abiah, Brad.
[upbeat music]
- Why is no one ready?
You plan, we plan.
- [Danilo] Abiah, Brad.
- No one's [laughing]
- Guys what the heck!
What's going on?
- Well, as you can see,
absolutely nothing.
- What happened?
- Sure, I'm trying to
hide from you Danilo.
- Last time, we learned
that you do you plan
and then you stick to the plan.
This time around, we
step our plan I mean,
we were even early
for the first time
and no one's here.
- But you guys had a
whole another challenge
before this one to
learn these lessons.
Why are you still
behind schedule?
- No, honestly, it's like,
it's not supposed to blame.
It's just one of those.
We really dropped a
really strict like plan.
So if someone doesn't arrive,
I guess you just
gotta take the hammer
into your own hands.
- And today we're going D and Y.
- Yeah.
- Okay, well let's
think optimistically,
what still needs to be done,
What's the vision,
what's the plan?
- A library.
- [Abia] That whole
room needs to be shut.
- Hitting in some nails,
not painting our
nails this time.
- And then we start to
decorate those shelves,
I mean we ordered
shelves four days.
So it's like, we're not
just gonna leave them plain
'cause we do like to give back,
but then it's like,
again in the same
situation as last time.
I will be honest and it's like-
- Big dreams, take
big plans and,
[laughing]
a lot of stress.
- And if you guys don't
complete all of this,
what happens if you lose again?
- Uh-uh, I'll be damned
if we lose again,
no, no, no, no, no, no, no!
[upbeat music]
- [Danilo] Last week,
Team Visi were critiqued
or not showing more creativity
and personality in their room.
This time they're
expressing their style
with a fun paint technique
as part of a fetal wall.
- Good, be careful of this.
- So Team Visi getting
their hands dirty.
Hello, you two.
- Yep.
- All right Danilo.
- Hi Danilo.
- This looks pretty interesting.
As hard at work
as you guys look,
I'm very worried and just
see paint on the walls,
nothing else is in here.
You guys are gonna be done?
- We gonna get
everything done on time.
It's all about time management.
I think we're on
the right check.
So, we're not stressing.
Our furniture's waiting
for us in the other room.
- Exactly.
- You can ask Lesego.
- So we have everything here.
We just need to put it together
as soon as our floors are done.
- This looks interesting.
Tell me about what the plan is
with this piece in the wall.
- We're doing like a
painting technique effect,
which is gonna
look very awesome.
Just, give us two hours
and we will be done.
[Lesego laughing]
- What is the idea then
of the whole space?
- So this room is basically
gonna be a safe place
for our clients.
We want him to come in
here at rest and relax.
He enjoys music.
He enjoys photographs.
He enjoys studying, reading.
So what we're gonna do is
have a study slash music room
slash library where
he can just relax.
So on this wall here,
we're gonna display one
of his prized photos,
which was a collaboration
we did with Mpho
Mokgadi on photographs.
- Around Josie.
- Yeah.
- One thing I've always wanted
to do is get my hand involved
in the artwork.
So can I add my two cents?
- You can just...
Let me put it like
a bit of this.
- And then sprayer up.
- And then you can go,
yeah, there we go.
- [Both] Look at that.
- Hey now.
[laughing]
- Lovely guys, we'll
get back to it.
- Thanks Danilo.
- Good luck,
I wanna see a finished product.
I want it to be brilliant.
- Thank you Danilo.
We're promising you the best.
- Cheers!
[upbeat music]
- [Danilo] True to their word,
the pace of work does indeed
quicken at all three homes.
There's a real sense of purpose
as the tradesman bring
the duos vision to life,
and it's exciting to see
the spare rooms take shape
as each specialist
adds the input.
[upbeat music]
Next time we reveal
the spare rooms
and it's anyone's
guess, that Team Habitat
will get the victory
they feel they deserve.
Or will they even
be done on time?
Plus, whose photographic collabo
will come out on top
between Team Visi
and Team House and Leisure.
At the end of the day,
the judges will rule.
All of that on the coming
episode of My Design Rules.
[upbeat music]
