- [Narrator] Last time
on My Design Rules.

The last day of the
garden challenge

was not sunshine and roses.

And it got worse when
one design duo got caught

breaking a serious rule.

- Deadline was 5:00 PM.

Who gave you permission to
decide to carry on doing work,

when deadline was done?

- [Narrator] With
team house and leisure

at risk of being disqualified,

the judge's feedback was
of utmost importance.

Fortunately, they
had high praise

for all of the magnificent
outdoor spaces,

which had great functionality,

artistic elements and
water-wise plants.

But, only one
design duo could win

the biggest
challenge reward yet.

- The winning design duo
is, a BN rad team habitat.

- [Narrator] Going into
the final challenge,

there'll be no lounging
around as our design duos,

enter the battle of
the budgets and stretch

the last of their cash
to finish their homes.

[upbeat music]

- Welcome to My Design Rules.

We have three competing design
duos, have almost completed

transforming three white box
spaces, into lavish homes.

With only one more room
still left to decorate,

the remaining cash budget isn't
looking too great for some.

Well team habitat
received a budget boost

for winning the
garden challenge,
team house and leisure

only have 36,000 Rand remaining,

which isn't a lot of money
considering the challenge.

[upbeat music]

- [Danilo] Contestants I cannot
believe it's come to this.

The final challenge
on season four,

before the judges arrive
for the final verdict

and that 100,000
Rand cash prize.

- I'm sad, it's
our last challenge.

- Oh yeah.

- But I'm happy cause now
we can rest, no more--

- And maybe no one cried
throughout all the challenges.

- There's still a yet,
there's still a yet

- Oh okay, you want
to cry tomorrow?

[laughing]

- It's been exciting going
from one room to another room,

to another room and like,

we were just having ideas
and planting them in.

And now it's like after this
one it's, you've been cut off.

- The next and final room
you'll be decorating,

is the entertainment
epicenter of your home.

It is of course
your living rooms.

You will have just 10 days to
turn this space into a room

that is not only
beautifully designed,

but also one that brings
the entire home together.

- It's our last lap

and we want to pull this
whole house together,

through the lounge.

- Absolutely.

- Toughest challenge,
because of the budget.

Couches are expensive.

- Tables are expensive.

- I'm worried because
of our budget.

I guess that's like
my biggest concern now

cause the coach that I want

[Tshepo and Banele laughing]

- It's above the budget.

- Not even above, it's
like double our budget.

- And you're not getting it.

- I know, I've
made peace with it.

- Contestants, that
100,000 Rand is so close

pressure's on for the last time,

go forth and design.

Don't underestimate our
intrepid design duos

because through all the
trials and tribulations

of this competition,
they've learned

some invaluable lessons.

Like how to stretch a budgets,

but they've also made some
great industry connections

which have led to some
creative collaborations.

- [Narrator] The first
place team habitat goes,

is to the man who designed
their kitchen chandelier

for more extra
ordinary lighting.

- [Brad] Sure, Stephen
Pikus is by the grace of

the design Gods.

- How we found him.

- He was sent from the heaven.

- He really was.

- [Brad] We share a similar
aesthetic in terms of design.

- [Abiah] Yes.

- [Brad] And up cycling,
social development,

and taking things from
nothing into something grand

and just, wow.

- [Stephen] There's
so many products,

waste products in the markets
where people don't really know

what to do with them.

I mean these air
filters for example,

nobody recycles them.

You know there's something
in the process of

turning something, that's
found something was discarded

to give it a second life to
make it something beautiful.

Maybe even more beautiful
than it was originally.

- Stephen so, we've
killed the kitchen.

So now it's time for the
lounge, the last challenge.

So we're here for
those track lights.

So we kind of have some
inspiration in terms of

what the lounge looks like.

We are thinking--

- Yeah just a rough
drawing up how

we're gonna place
furniture in the lounge.

- Okay, so here's
your coffee table.

- Yes.
- Yes.

- And I think we'd
want the lights

to be over the coffee table.

- Yes.

- To actually exempt that area.

Hence we brought simba
along for that extra roar.

[laughing]

He's gonna to be the base
of this coffee table.

- And then we want the lights
to be above the coffee table.

- [Stephen] I think we could
mount a plate against the roof

and then stagger the
truck lights going down

maybe eight of them,
almost in a spiral.

And we could use finishes that
would pick up simba's color.

A beautiful bras,
copper, nickel silver,

which would pick up the beads.

We could do something
stunning like those.

- I mean I can already hear
that V8 engine roaring.

- Along with simba roaring .

- I mean its a roll.

- It does need to get
those judges to roar.

[chuckling]

- It's a yes.

[upbeat music]

- Went to Plascon spaces
today for color consultation.

- What we wanted to
do in our lounge,

is we wanted to do
something like this.

But we wanted to use warm,

inviting colors
because it is a lounge.

We want people to sit and
talk and enjoy the space.

So I love these colors, the
milano gold, the sticky toffee

and the dragon's heart.

As it gets you ca see the
millionaire gold is from the B,

so which means it's
a bright color.

But sometimes when you use
bright colors in one space,

they become a bit too
much for one to take.

- Okay.

- So we don't want that energy.

So to tone it down a bit,

I would suggest that
you add the sequery

as well as one of
my favorite colors,

which is called splentum.

- Now we need help on how
to execute these shapes.

We want it to look
clean and professional.

- It's going to be a process,
it might take a few days,

but to get this perfect,

we have to do it
one shape at a time.

To get that beautiful
half circle,

put your pencil on the
wall and do a half circle

on a board that you want, no
matter the size that you want.

And then from then on,

you can create your
own stance off to have

the perfect circle
for this house.

- Awesome.

That sounds like a plan.

I'm excited to do this.

- [Narrator] Team house and
leisure meet with artists,

Heidi Ferry, and photographer
at Tatenda Chidora,

who are collaborating on
different types of artwork

for the living room.

Tatenda and Heidi are
showing us the printed images

and also the techniques that

they're trying to do.

So just the collage,

the painting over and
also the drive to film.

And they really trying
to figure out which one

will to we be the best effect.

- We looked at a
few photographs,

some landscapes,
some portraiture,

and then Heidi and I decided
to work with the portraits.

We chose the portraits because
they've got enough space

for Heidi to paint on the
sides or put a collage.

So there's enough space
to incorporate as well.

- I think the portraits
specifically resonated with me.

They're quite striking.

So I think that it can stand
out in the room and there can

be a very strong feature.

The one photograph has a floral
arrangement on the model.

And for me, it can communicate
with the paint marks client.

- I'm quite excited.

I'm a big fan of Heidi.

So I'm really looking forward
to see the color into the

images and mostly work a
lot in black and white.

So it would be good to
have a different dimension

in the images.

- I really overpower your
photographs with my painting.

So I'm going to try
and keep it a bit mute.

I'm not going to go too crazy
with the colors because it's

quite serene and in silence.

So I don't want to overpower
it with too much paint and too

much marks and put
too much over it.

Do you agree with that?

- [Banele] I do agree
and I definitely think

it's going to be amazing.

- We are very proud of our
design duos for showcasing

South African design,
in such innovative ways

throughout the homes.

After the break, they have
their final mentorship sessions.

[upbeat music]

Welcome back to My Design Rules.

Our duos do you guys have
had an exciting journey

so far in the competition

and they've all
grown along the way

with the guidance and
supports of their mentors.

So with this being
the final challenge,

the final meetings
of bittersweet.

[People cheering]

- Well done on winning the
garden that's fantastic.

- Yeah I know, thank you.

- Thank you, ow we're
going for the big one.

- The overall one?

- The overall one.

- Of course.

- And we're not gonna stop.

- There's no stopping now.
- There's no stopping

♪ Aint no stopping as now

That's right.

- And so what are we doing
for the lounge, show me.

- Sure so with the
lounge, obviously now
we've already taken

some of the space away
with this dining room.

- Yes.

- So we thought of creating
somewhat of a partition

to create a privacy
for the lounge space.

- What kind of partitioning
are you thinking of using.

- S0 you see that's
where we're debating.

- That's where we're debating.

- How to we...

'cause we thinking
something of this structure,

like a wooden structure

- [Amanda] And you could
use the pillars of the

partitioning to put shelves in.

That might be quite a nice idea.

- Yeah.

- [Amanda] To put the
art of jay on a shelf,

make a little bit more
interesting and less stock.

Do you think you might
incorporate stone,

in the lounge area?

- [Abiah] Yeah, so we really
wanna optimize on the orcas.

Unless of course we can rip
that one off the wall and put it

somewhere in the lounge.

- I mean, we have to bring it
in a lounge, its so amazing.

- No you do.

- Like its huge, its huge.

- What do you do
with the lighting?

[laughing]

What are we doing
with the lighting?

- Team chandelier.

I think for this time around
we're using Stephen Pukis again

for our lights, just to carry
on the theme of the razzle.

- [Amanda] But not the
chandelier, repeated over there.

- No he's gonna do track lights.

- Yes.

- You're going for more
of an industrial look

with the lighting
for the lounge area.

Complete contrast
to the chandelier.

- Do we have a
winning combination?

- Yes, lets win it guys.

- Yes!

I know we're taking
it, and all of them.

[upbeat music]

- [Lesego] We are
going to Richard today.

Richard has everything from
retro, mid century pieces,

all the way to
like modern pieces.

- [Mpho] So Annemarie, you
know that we already bought

our shay couch and
we're looking for a?

- A chair, a lounge chairs to
go with that beautiful couch.

And we want it obviously
to be very comfortable,

but we want it to
be a unique piece.

And that's why we're
here because they have

beautiful retro
mid-century pieces.

And I think they'd
be absolutely unique

and beautiful for our space.

- [Mpho] I think maybe
this occasional chair

will play a big role with our
wine rack, our wall unit there

and also the carpet.

- Yes so we have the rug,

which was meant to be used
in our master bedroom.

But now we've decided to use it

- Oh yes I remember.

- Yes, we've decided to
use it in the lounge.

And I think because it's
got those beautiful,

delicious monsters on them,

it's going to bring
a beautiful pop.

And I think all of that put
together is going to be lovely.

- You've obviously
been here before.

So show me what
you were looking at

and we'll choose one.

- Annmarie, look what we found.

- I am in love with this chair.

First of all, I feel
like it's more formal.

- I know you fell for the
deep buttoning detail.

- Well, this chair is nice,
but when I came into return,

I fell in love with the gold
chair, just totally dies.

I mean look at this,
tell me if I'm lying.

- [Annemarrie] I'm with you.

I'm with you, when I
walked past the shop,

I saw that and I
thought did they see it.

- And the fabric is also conf--

- Fabulous!

- Yeah I could fall asleep here.

- Are you losing your eyes?

- [Annemarie] But here's the
question, can you afford it?

- I think I can, we can.

Ill even sell
Lesego for this one.

- You're gonna sell me?

[laughing]

- I guess I'm sold.

[Laughing]

Selling me off, like a slave.

- No, I didn't sell you off.

- For a chair, a chair?

- It's worth it
for the challenge.

- Not even a Maserati,
not even a ja... a chair.

- It's worth for the challenge.

- [Narrator] While a chair
comes between team Visi,

team habitat is literally
putting up a wall.

Luckily there's no
drama, just a partition.

- [Abiah] We like a
place with that adventure

and with the partitions, I
thinking it makes the place

look bigger.

- [Brad] Absolutely.

- Rather than going open plan.

- Yeah, it just makes
a lounge a lounge,

a kitchen a kitchen.

- You need partitions

- And there's storage
in our partition.

So we maximizing on that.

- It's like going
on a first date

you don't wanna show
the guy everything.

- Absolutely not, especially
If you didn't do your dishes.

- Yes, you wanna keep
something hidden.

- Absolutely, the mystery

- We're going to do 10 misses,
because we actually had been

following the designs in the
past and we thought they'd be

fitting for aesthetic and
also something quite different

and playful and the
total looking for

especially for the lounge.

- [Tshepo] It will be really
nice to have one or two

of their pieces in our space.

- What do you think of this one?

- It is lovely.

I love that it's
very sculptural,

and then it'll blend in
with the whole theme of

introducing artworks to the
space, I really like it?

- And are you not
worried that we might not

be able to put
anything on it at all.

- Not worried at all.

[laughing]

- You're lying.

- We are a bit said that
I'm meeting with Tiaan

for the last time.

It is like now sinking in
that, like the competition is

approaching the end.

- And also it's with Tiaan,
I think we've got a great

relationship with
him that it feels as,

even after the competition
we'd still be able to

reach out to him
and us for help.

- Learning from the
outdoor challenge,

what are you going to do
this time round inside

that's gonna wow the judges?

- Design of Pearson...

[laughing]

And another thing,
throughout the house

we've been using
like softer colors.

So we're trying to introduce
much bolder colors now

for the lounge area,
from the kitchen,

running into the
lounge we opted for

like a Caribbean current.

- And then with the interior,
especially the couches

we're thinking of these colors.

And because we've
got very bright walls

we want to keep it neutral.

So we have the materials
that'll just soft in the space.

And then at the
back of the chairs,

because you can still see the
back we'd like to add details

so that when you walk in,
you can see all the colors.

- We came to Plascon
because we saw that

they have like quite
striking pieces.

And then we've been looking
at quite a few coffee table

and well, there's a UFO coffee
table on the other side.

And while I feel like it's
quite bold, very sculptural.

And then there's a soldier.

What's nice about the soldier
is the size and the height.

And then option three
will be the penguin.

I think the UFO is a better
option for that room.

It's sculptural, it's
gonna anchor the space

and it's going to
create a talking point,

a focal point in that space
that's needed in the lounge.

- From the start team
habitats have adopted

an awful wall approach to
design and now they're reworking

something from the first
challenge to create a bar

in the lounge.

- [Abiah] we meeting
Melissa and her art.

- It's always exciting
meeting with them

because their stone is amazing.

It's just too beautiful.

- [Abiah] Absolutely.

- What have you
guys got in mind?

- We're working on
the lounge area.

So with the off
cats that we have,

we wanted you guys
to advise us on

what's possible to
be made, you know,

from the offcuts
that we've kept.

- Okay.

- You could be making
small little tabletops

for occasional tables.

We could possibly pop in a
couple of floating shelves

with what you've got left.

- Lets try the wall.

- Yes
- Yes that's great.

- Yeah, you could even have
a couple of little platters,

so you can sue some
sushi around the bar.

Really really versatile,
plenty we can do with it.

- Sure so--

- What do you have in mind?

- Well so far,
when you look at...

this is the sketch
of the layout.

So we've got the
lounge area here,

and this is the area that we
want to convert into the bar.

- A is little social
area in the lounge,

bar top, a cabinet
maybe for your drinks.

- Cause the space
is very limited.

It's like 800 across, but we're
going to make a little table

600 that you can go around
it to get to the cabinets

and the, and the cocktails.

- I think a big factor here
is the space like you said,

I mean you also don't
wanna make it too small.

You sit through the 600 table,

I mean it's basically
just you who's gonna sit.

Just two people are
gonna sit there.

- Well that's not much
a social gathering.

- Yeah so, we have
to have a look at the

space and then we can see
and plan it from there maybe.

- Okay

- Gerhard I must ask, I
know this is a tall ask

but we've got one more slab,

that's sitting in
the guest bedroom.

That's not really optimizing
on its value that I'd need you

to somehow miraculously
yank it off the wall

and we make it into
something really spectacular.

- You must be kidding me.

- So, unfortunately I don't
have any more jokes left

in this last lap.

- To be honest, we
will get it off,

but you're going to have a
lot of damage onto your walls,

your plaster, your paint.

Might even damage the stone.

So, what do you guys
want to use it for.

- It's like a goodie bag

sitting right at the
back of the house

that we want to bring somewhat
to the front of the house,

into the lounges and the kitchen

and just find a
new purpose for it.

- You know, we found that
putting it on the wall

wasn't the best--

- [Abiah] One of our best ideas.

- Yes I will do it, but
you must know one thing,

the risk is on you ey?

- Okay no we accept
all the risk.

If it breaks into some pieces,

we'll make sure those
pieces are used up.

- No risk, no reward
hey team habitat.

After the break, I pop
into each home to see

how they're doing
at the halfway mark

of the final challenge.

[upbeat music]

Welcome back to My Design Rules.

There's no time for couch
potatoes in the final challenge,

as our design duos plunge
all their passion and energy

into the all important
lounge space.

- [Narrator] Team
habitat needed to add

one final flourish of
their audacious design.

And the lounge will showcase
their nack for functionality

combined with unexpected
design style choices.

- Sure it's the halfway
mark of the final challenge

and team razzle dazzle
seems to be making

some good progress.

How's it going?

- It's going, but there's
a lot more to get going on.

- A lot.

- This lounge is the last
challenge in the competition.

I mean, what was your
initial vision for the space?

- The most important vision was,

to join all the rooms together

and we wanted to
create a maze situation

so when you walk in,

it's not only a kitchen,
dining room, lounge,

but they're all
separated somehow.

- Yes yes.

- And intricately designed
so that they create

interesting, I guess
focal points in each view.

- Last time you guys
served me a milkshake,

but apparently by the end
of this lounge challenge,

I'll be served something
slightly stronger.

- Oh my, absolutely.

In that corner we're
going to have a bar.

So we went back to our
guest bedroom and pulled

that stone on the
wall, off the wall

to be cut into the bar.

- At the moment I'm seeing a
lot of wood, a lot of neutrals

where's the razzle-dazzle?

- That's the way,

we're definitely getting
some razzle and dazzle.

- Yes, mirrors are going up.

We've got mirrors coming up
on the ceilings, the pillars.

So that's going to be--

- Dazzling

When you heard about our
table, its Nala the lion

so its quite a state...it's
a statement piece.

- Please don't say there's
gonna be any more grass,

like fake grass or fake plants.

- Honey.

- [Narrator] For their lounge,

team Visi wants to create a
space that oozes sophistication,

but can still be relaxing.

So their vision includes big
puffs color, but where is it?

- Okay, so it seems like
team Visi on maximizing space

and taking minimalism
really seriously.

- Yes and no.

[laughing]

- So stuff is still
coming I hope.

- Yes there's quite a few things

that need to come in here,
but we do have it all onsite.

We're just waiting for the
painting to be finalized

and our lovely paint technique
that is still loading yes.

- Ooh, you've mentioned
your pain technique.

Paint avision for me of what
it's going to look like.

- Well, on our wall we want
to play with geometric shapes.

So we're going to use squares
and blocks in different colors

and in different positions,

which gives you something
beautiful to look at

as you're lounging around.

- One other thing I've noticed
is you'll mirror over here

make great assets of try and
make a space look bigger.

So how are you gonna
use mirrors in the home?

- We're gonna put
the mirrors on the,

in order to reflect our winery.

And we're also going to
use the mirror to create

like a double volume
type of space to reflect

you when you are
standing in the kitchen.

- I cannot wait to see the space
just unfold into this magic

concrete jungle lounge.

- Can't wait for you to see it.

- Yes!

- [Narrator] Team
house and leisure

have had a stressful time
in the last few challenges,

but with the lounge at their
giving the space loads of

character, and they're
having a ton of fun.

- Ladies and gentlemen,
welcome to the game show of

team house that leisure
the game is called?

- Pick a box.
- Pick a box.

- Inside each box
is a grand prize,

let's see what we've got.

[laughing]

Oh cool guys, I like these.

What are they?

- They are pendants
and also microphones.

- And you can use
it as a mug as well.

- And so I'm pretty sure that
no kids can live in this house

because it wouldn't
be a disaster.

- I don't think so.

- So you guys have got a lot
of color going on in the space.

I'm seeing three
different light pendants,

I'm seeing green walls,
red walls, white walls,

yellow walls in fact I
should wear glasses again.

- Don't you know,

- What we tried to do is
go bold this time around

because in our past rooms
we've been a bit too muted.

So we thought like, what's the
worst thing that can happen.

Let's splash the color.

- We could lose.

[laughing]

- This space needs to
really wow the judges

cause it'll tie
everything together.

What are the factors in
here that you're hoping

that they'll notice?

- So I think the judges will
notice that designer pieces,

which are very unique
in the sense that

it's not store bought pieces.

We selected each
item very carefully

and curated well for the space.

- Well you two
look very chilled.

The space is looking
nice and vibrant.

One thing remains,
get back to work!

- Bye!
- Bye!

- So far so good, but our
duos are gonna have to

work hard at it because
in the next episode,

we want to see some
incredible lounges.

Best you be in your lounge and
in front of your television.

As the judges rule on the
winners of the last challenge on

My Design Rules.
