- [Narrator] Last time
on My Design Rules,
our design-duos served up
kitchens to suit all tastes.
From the minimalist
artistic to urban chic
and a bit of glam.
These kitchens could not be
more different from each other.
Our judges had the tough
task of assessing the designs
and their feedback
was pretty spicy,
from a wobbly
stairway to heaven.
- Okay. No need to move that.
- [Narrator] To a scathing burn.
- The nicest thing about
this kitchen is the cake.
- [Narrator] Overall the
judges were impressed
by the design features
of the various kitchens
and chose Team Visi as the
winners of this challenge.
- [Lasego] I'm quite happy
we've taken two challenges now.
So other Teams, they should
just take us serious now.
- [upbeat music]
- Welcome to My Design Rules.
Each of our competing duos
have big dreams of
winning this competition,
but they all have one
small problem in common,
money.
After lavish spending in
the first few challenges,
And with two rooms
still left to decorate,
Team Habitat have 68,000 Rand
left of their cash budgets
Team Visi have 64,000 Rand
and truly feeling the pinch.
Team House and Leisure have
a measly 48,000 Rand left.
So clearly money's too tight
to mention for our duos,
but that hasn't stopped them
from lamenting about it.
- [upbeat music]
- [Mpho] The budget
is looking very swack.
It's looking very bad,
but we will make
sure we finish this.
- Yeah, she's, she's,
she's the finance.
- Now the purse is closed.
- So.
- [both laugh]
- Our budget is tight.
- It's been tight since I
think after the master bedroom.
- So it's been tight, so
we've learned how to--
- After the bathrooms.
- After the bathrooms,
it's been tight.
So now we know how to work
with the tight budgets.
- We are working on
a shoestring budget,
and we've literally have to
create magic with that budget.
- We will make it work, we
are miracle workers after all.
- [both laugh]
- [Danilo] Hello, contestants,
and welcome to your next
and penalty challenge
on season four.
For this challenge,
each of you is going to have
to think outside of the box
and outside of the home.
For this challenge,
you'll be designing and
decorating the patio and garden.
- How do you design a garden?
- ♪ Garden garden time .
- I feel like this
is a challenge where
everybody can just go crazy,
and I encourage
everybody to go crazy.
You can go crazy for plants.
- Go crazy for me? [laughs]
- Abiah, can hang a
chandelier wherever he can,
so just go crazy guys.
- [Danilo] Each duo will get
their very own green thumb.
We'll be allocating
a landscaping company
to each design Team
to turn the bear rebel outside,
into award-winning
patios and gardens.
But for this challenge,
there's a twist.
Not only are you competing
for a challenge to win,
but also the biggest
reward thus far.
The winning design duo of
this challenge will walk away
with 10,000 Rand
added to their budget
for the final challenge.
- [Lasego] Oh, so
- We need to win it.
- Yeah. We need that
10,000 Rand extra.
- We ran up our options.
Do we take the risk now and
spend a lot on the garden
to win that 10,000?
- So that you can
carry on that dream
in the rest of the house.
- So we're going
prakly with the garden.
- At this point,
thinking of that 10,000
it gives me chest pains
because if we get it,
it will make a huge difference.
- It'll be like a million
Rand to our budget.
- I know, right?
- [both laugh]
- Team Habitat are clearly
gunning for that 10,000 Rand
challenge win bonus
by gambling 40,000 Rand
on the outdoor area.
Team Visi are playing it
slightly more conservatively
allocating only 24,000
Rand to this challenge.
Plus their bonus from the
kitchen challenge win.
Team House and Leisure,
taking cognizance
of their budget woes
are allocating 15,000 Rand.
Thankfully,
because we want to see
these gardens truly bloom.
We've assigned each
of the design duos
a landscaping expert.
- [afro beat music]
- Thank you for coming through.
We just compiled some
images just to show you
what kind of mood
field we're going for
for the garden space and patio.
So we've got... Obviously
this is the beginning.
It's still a Sahara
desert, just sad.
It's dry.
So dry. So we want to season
it up, add some plants,
some water. Yeah.
Cause there's--
definitely cause we
started with running a pool
and so that's a bit out of
the budget. So we thought,
how do we incorporate some water
into the whole garden space?
- [Brad] So technically
we'd want a big pond.
- [Abiah] Absolutely.
As large as we can go.
- Yeah, lots of bridges.
- [all laugh]
- You know, just things
that keep it interesting.
Cause as you can see,
what we're standing
over is a fireplace
16 century
- [Brad] 18th century
- [Abiah] 18, 16, either
way, it's so sweet.
So, you know, we just
want to make the outdoor
feel like an extension of
the indoors for this area,
the patio.
- So listening to
what you guys wanted,
I've actually just designed a
water feature around the patio
and we have a seating
area over there
and then we'll be
having lawn all around
and we'll be having
some walkways
and bridges to...
just to create that intricate
movement and also the plants,
which will be
indigenous, you know,
just to give you that feel.
And they'll have a lot color.
Team Habitat is very
fantastic, you know.
They're a very nice duo,
they're very energetic
and their ideas are actually
flamboyant, you know,
and sometimes you just
have to reel them in
with some of the ideas.
But yeah, they're very
nice duo to work with.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Team
Visi meets with Craig,
from The Friendly Plants
to exchange ideas.
He will draw up a design and
later reveal the Master plan.
Meanwhile, one half of
Team House and Leisure
is meeting with their
landscaper from, Acton gardens.
- [Tchepo] I'm
meeting with Sarah.
And I think it's an amazing
thing that she's on board
cause she's educating
me about a lot of things
I didn't know
regarding landscaping.
So it's quite helpful
having her on board.
- [Sarah] There's quite
a large space here
being a corner stand.
So we need to look
at some focal points,
something that could attract
the viewers as attention
this space here,
we've got an aloe and
quite a large open window.
So what did you have in mind
for the feature in this corner?
- What we had
planned for this area
is to remove this aloe,
probably fit it somewhere
but then we need
to have like a pond
happening here,
which is gonna be one
of our focal points.
- [Sarah] I'm thinking your
water feature idea here,
something that's sort of
flowing from space to space
with a bit of a back wall that
sums features a feature wall.
- [Tchepo] That's going
to be really lovely.
And I think since we
have one of those walls,
that's part of like
the development.
It'll be nice to match that wall
to the wall that's
gonna be that side
for the two sides to balance.
- You mentioned that
you wanna have a walkway
coming from road
through to the patio.
What did you have
in mind for that?
- We're hoping to achieve that
with a bit of your
help, of course
Cause it's going to
be a bit of a DIY.
What we want to do is
have sort of like
organic shapes and then
in different sizes,
running into the patio.
And then on the other
side of the house,
we're gonna have a sculpture,
but that's still
like it still needs
to be finalized
because we have two
options to select from.
- [upbeat music]
- After the break the design
duos put petal to the medal
in the garden challenge
with a little horticultural
shopping spree.
- [upbeat music]
- [upbeat music]
- Aloe and welcome back
to My Design Rules.
To ensure the garden spaces
remain proudly South African,
our duos are restricted to
using indigenous plants.
So a trip to the local
garden center is in order.
- [Banele] We're
looking for plants,
and they're telling us we can
only have indigenous plants,
which is fitting because we've
been looking for local design
and now it makes us
have local plants.
- [Wayne] Right, So
these are they Clivia.
So they're gonna
work for you because,
well, firstly, they
water-wise, they're indigenous
and they're also flower.
So they attract all the bees.
So they like their
pollinator friendly,
which is what you want.
And actually most importantly,
they're going to fit into the
design that you want to do.
So I think this is actually
the one that you're
going to use.
- [Tchepo] I love that
they'll add a touch of color
to our garden.
- [Wayne] Perfect. So I
think you're gonna like them.
- Thank you so much.
- Aside from the expert advice
from the Team at
the garden center,
our design duos can also draw
on the wealth of knowledge
from their mentors.
Team Habitat met up with Amanda
to weed out what
the judges want.
- [Abiah] Meeting with Amanda.
- Sure, We didn't win
the kitchen challenge.
We were a little bit nervous
meeting Amanda.
- I'm sure you've heard
about the kitchen challenge.
- I have indeed.
- These judges are
like Katy Perry,
they're hot then they're cold
they're yes and then they're no
Ooh [sighs]
- we don't know anymore.
- There's somewhere around
there, they're like,
"we're lacking a lot
about personality."
- I'm confused to be honest.
because we've gone from
too much wrestle decile to
extreme minimalism, if you like,
and now there's not enough
of your personalities
coming through.
- I think it's time we attack
the garden's like gorillas
and go wild roaring wild.
- What are we looking at?
- [laughs]
- Um, can I expect to see
her at target or a leverage?
- Sure, if we can
get our hands on one.
- They'll definitely be one.
- It will coarse the judges
in the right direction.
- I wouldn't put it past you.
- [Brad] Scare them away.
- Let's start with
the furniture.
So, so far we were thinking
of something of this nature,
like in terms of having
seating, that will--
- [Brad] we're
up-cycling furniture.
Second-hand furniture.
- [Abiah] yeah.
- [Brad] So we've been
looking for indigenous plants.
- Yeah, keeping it proudly
South African or African.
- [Amanda] Aloes.
- Aloes
- [Amanda] cacti
- cacti
- Like some of these ones, yeah.
- Yes, We practically left the,
- [Abiah] I think that's
the indigenous grass
- Yes I love that too.
- [Brad] it's nice as a filler.
- [Amanda] You
wanna create a lush?
- [Abiah] Yes.
- Lovely garden.
- Yes.
- [Amanda] Okay, lighting's
going to be important--
- Sure, I was about...
I was afraid to
actually bring it up.
Can I just have one more
- No, no.
- Just one more.
Amanda, just one more.
- But even if I say no,
you don't obey me anyway,
You go ahead.
- Okay, but I'll
send you the picture
like we did with this one.
- [Amanda] And if
I don't approve it?
You'll do it anyway.
- I'll surprise you
just to surprise you.
[chuckles]
- [Brad] we got to bring
him from the back spot.
- We could possible consider it.
- Okay.
- [Brad] Amanda's on our side.
- [Abiah] Yes.
And we're gonna go hard and
we're gonna just put back
a little bit of attitude
into--
- A lot of attitude.
[laughs]
- [gentle music]
- [Mpho] Looking
through the garden,
and we find that they have
more hardscaping things
which are like pots, pavers.
- [Lasego] Everything
that we literally need
for the garden
So you know that we are
kind of like doing the
concrete jungle theme
for the outdoor gardens.
We want a simple
garden, low maintenance,
because of our client
is a single guy.
- [Mpho] So what we want
is an outdoor living space
um, we want our client to
be able to live outdoors
and do what they need to do.
That's why we've included
an outdoor dining area
as well as our um,
fire area.
- Yeah.
- All right, so then
what you to do is
look at some other
accessories. So, you know,
when you come to the nursery,
it's not only about plants
it can very definitely be or
everything you need to
make this outdoor room
because your garden is
actually an extension
of your home.
It's not just a garden,
it's somewhere where you
actually have to live.
So I think you guys
are on the right track,
trellising is something
you can maybe consider.
I think you can look
at doing something fun
with the trellising on
the walls or a screening.
So start playing
with ideas on that
because it's quite economical
and it's an easy way
to add a focal point.
- [Mpho] So that's
what we're gonna do.
I like that idea
- When you've done this,
Why don't you also
think of using,
you said concrete jungle.
- Yeah.
- So what about doing like
some of the concrete balls
or some pavers or
just something that's not
what people are going to
expect to find in your style?
- Lovely. I love all--
- Take it a bit outside the
box and into the garden.
- Awesome, let's get these.
- Perfect.
- [upbeat music]
- [Banele] We're doing the
Houtlander collaboration,
and what we've
been looking for is
out door furniture
that will actually
be weather proof and
weather resistant as well.
- We're actually looking for
outside furniture for our patio
and we liked this
bench as we walked in
- [Banele] and we love the
classic take on the wood
and the simplicity
which is so elegant
and we think would be
fitting for the space.
- [Stephen] Glad you like it.
Phillip and I are passionate
about Scandinavian design and
sort of timeless classics.
Those particular benches
inspired by echoes love bench.
It's got a coziness,
it's made for two
and we really feel like
we've made something that's
going to last forever.
For us,
design has to be timeless
and classic for that reason.
You want something that's
gonna look good
50 years from now
Not, not necessarily
just for a trend.
- [Tchepo] Can we have
it without the armrest?
- [Stephen] Absolutely.
And the armrest, we actually
sort of encourage for an area
where you'll be lounging.
If you're gonna sit at a table,
perhaps you don't
want the armrest
so you can slip
in and out of it.
It really depends
on the function.
- [Tchepo] I think the furniture
internists with this space,
because firstly it is wood
and we've been trying to
incorporate wood
throughout the house,
just to warm each and
every single space up.
So I believe that is
an amazing addition.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Team House
and Leisure mentor, Tiaan
arrives to discuss their
ideas and Vision for the
collaboration.
- [Tchepo] Tiaan, We want
like your advice on...
since we already
getting this furniture,
how can we put like
a signature on it?
- First of all,
this furniture is so beautiful
and the detailing
is so exquisite.
So you don't want to
distract from that too much.
I wouldn't necessarily add color
because I think it distracts,
the wood is so beautiful and
the shape is so sophisticated.
I wouldn't wanna
mess with that too much.
- Tiaan We're also getting a
coffee table and we're curious,
should we have around coffee
table or a square shaped?
- I would consider maybe
um, looking at a square shape or
rectangular shape that
would fill up the space
and then anchor the
space a little bit
as an outdoor living space,
opposed to small
furniture kind of like
scattered on the patio.
So yeah, I think
that we'll kind of
group it a little bit better.
- And Banele and I
are getting a swan.
- A Swan?
- [Tchepo] I'm just joking
- [all laugh]
- I'm joking.
- [laughter continues]
- Banele, doesn't seem
to know about this one.
- But we are getting a pond
and we're trying to
keep it quite organic.
And as if we found it in the
space instead of a manmade one.
- Perfect.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] After a
productive ideas exchange
with Craig from
The Friendly Plant,
it's time for Team Visi
and their mentor to see the
indigenous plant CS selected.
- Luckily Craig is very
good at what he does.
- He's an expert
in what he does.
He has a big farm, trust me.
- [Mpho] Huge farm.
- [Lasego] I think we have
an advantage from most duos
by having Craig.
So we need to use him in a way
where like, it needs to work.
- We've bought a selection
of your plants out
so that you can see
them all in one place
and give us a good idea of
what the garden's
going to look like.
- [Mpho] Craig, I also love how
you've kept to the indigenous
plants that we need,
but you've also found us
these beautiful green luscious
plants that have flowers.
I mean, when I think indigenous,
I think dry and aloes and
this absolutely is not that.
It's beautiful and
lash and vibrant
and I love that.
Annemarie, how do we
bring our personalities
and the personality
that is in the home,
out into the garden?
- Well, I think you guys
started it very well
by having this
imaginative owner,
the person you're
gonna do the home for,
and that you've worked
out his lifestyle,
what is he gonna
do over weekends?
What's he going to
do in his garden?
You know, and it's all
those types of things that
one looks at.
You stay in character.
Is there a way that
you can maybe show me
what you have in mind?
- Yeah, sure.
Let's go to the office and
I'll show you the design.
- [Mpho] Awesome, let's go.
- [Lasego] Annemarie
has helped us
not to lose track of our
concrete jungle theme.
It's more European, but
it has African style.
So rather use pop-up colors
instead of like doing patterns,
that'll be nice.
- [Craig] The way that the
garden fits together and
all the different
elements fit together
is going to give more of a wow.
When you look at the
totality of the garden,
as opposed to one
specific feature,
ideally it's a space
that you can relax in
and it's is a space that you
can kind of loose yourself in.
And the garden itself should be
a lush little concrete jungle.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Onsite,
Team House and Leisure
palms and walkway
with concrete pavers
are taking shape
as they bring their Vision
of an organic garden to life.
Team Habitat has gone
bold once more with a moat
running through most
of their garden space
as they bring a Regal
and glamorous touch
to their multifunctional patio.
Finally, Team Visi's garden
has been designed with
a very modern field.
It has a wow factor,
but easy to maintain
in keeping with a
concrete jungle theme.
- These gardens are definitely
going to be a celebration
of local flora.
After the break I
check in on the duos
to see how green their
fingers rarely are.
- [upbeat music]
- [upbeat music]
- Although our design
duos are fairly new
at landscape design,
they've had great help and
support in curating beautiful
outdoor spaces that
have really taken root.
Now at the halfway mark,
it's time for me to check in
and see how they are shaping up.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Every space
designed by Team Habitats
has a completely unexpected
out of the box element
in their garden
they've created a moat
where water can flow
throughout the outdoor space,
which naturally includes their
trademark artificial grass.
- I come bearing
gifts Abiah and Brad.
- Ah, thank you. But
isn't this one of ours?
- Excuse me don't be ungrateful.
A gift is a gift all
right, who knows?
This is looking
so cool and green,
the grass is green
on the other side.
- Absolutely. You know,
welcome to our chill area
and the garden space.
- Yes.
- You don't only get
one patio, but two.
- [Danilo] Two with
the price of one?
Or two with the price of two?
- Two for the price of one.
- [Danilo] Love it.
All right, describe
like a typical day
in the life out here.
- [Abiah] Well, it obviously
starts off with sunshine
and you'd be in this patio.
Patio number two with
the green grass or Gusta.
So if you've got allergies,
this is where you'd Suntan,
While looking at
the water flowing
feeling like you're on the beach
with your umbrella,
that's so happening
throwing shade onto the
patio and the neighbors,
- [laughs]
- Let's hope the judges
don't do the same.
Let's go do a quick tour.
- [laughs]
- [Brad] absolutely.
- [Danilo] So this is
like the moat I'd imagine.
So if you guys were in prison,
this would be your escape route.
- [Abiah] well, if
you've got businesses
that you just want to
throw into the Lake,
then it's your lake.
It's just a bit
Shallow for the cam.
- Yeah, we want it
to look like a Lake.
So we're gonna be
putting pebbles in
and we probably do going
to be painting the edges
the same color as the home,
- [Abiah] just to tie in
this whole merge and puzzle
in with the structure
of the house.
- [Danilo] What about the
actual nature side of things?
- [Abiah] There's gonna
be real grass here
and on this side,
lots of trees.
- We've got three trees coming.
- [Abiah] Yes.
And the front of the house.
- [Brad] Yes.
There'll be a lot of
plants there as well.
- Right, let's move
to patio number one.
Well at the halfway mark,
a lot of construction
has been done.
Looks very good are you
gonna be finished in time?
- Sure. By the grace of
mother nature. I hope so.
We just have to do
some tiling and then
- [Brad] the fireplace
is coming in.
- [Abiah] Yeah.
There's an opening
coming over here.
So we'll be shaded
next time around.
- The furniture needs to come in
table, couches.
- [Abiah] And of
course the water,
we need to just
fill up that dam.
- Well, keep the action
flowing. Good luck you two.
- Thank you.
- All right, thank you.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Modern
and African seek.
have been the guiding words
for Team Visi's design indoors,
and they're aiming to create
the same aesthetic outdoors
with their garden and patio.
- [Danilo] How's my two
wins in a row Team doing?
WhatsApp?
- Hi Danilo.
- Right? What is the
plan out in your patio?
- Obviously we're the
Team that loves color.
So we wanna bring that
out here onto the patio.
So what we gonna do is,
introduce some bold
colors with our plants.
and also with our accessories.
- [Lasego] We're creating more
of an outdoor living space.
Cause of, we don't
have a dining,
so we, we're gonna have to
paint this table to match with
the rugged concrete kind of
black theme color and have like,
the black chairs, but a
little bit of low seating.
It's more of a relaxing space.
- [Mpho] And we've also
brought in a water feature.
So the sound will
also help calm you,
as well as our
beautiful Zen garden,
which is behind the house,
in a lovely shady area.
So you can go there and
unwind if necessary as well.
- [Lasego] So this garden,
it's going to be amazing.
- Basically,
you guys are going to be keeping
up with the Joneses then.
- I think the Joneses gonna
have to keep up with us.
- [Mpho laughs]
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] The
Joneses in this case
are Team House and Leisure,
who have the most exposed
garden of the three
their design plays
on natural shapes
while maintaining
a minimalist feel,
- [Tchepo] It's a
bit of a war zone.
- [Danilo] Aren't sure of
where I can and can't stand
and stand on a, like
a mine or something.
- [Tchepo] No. no, please
don't step on those.
- [Danilo] Oh, why?
They're still wet?
- [Tchepo] Yes.
- [Danilo shrieks]
- [Tchepo] So what we
basically tried doing is
we kept the really simple,
but then tried to
create like focal points
this side, this side,
and a planting area on the
other side of the house.
And then what delayed things
a bit is the pond because
they're clearing, sticking it
is taking a little bit longer,
but then once that's done
it's gonna flow like
a well-oiled machine.
- [Danilo] What about the mula?
You guys are running out
of money really quickly.
So have you kind of applied
that minimalist theme from
indoors, all the way into our
doors to keep the costs low?
- That is true.
We are doing minimal and it
starts with our furniture.
It's very minimal
Scandinavian inspired.
And it's designer
so that actually ups the
value of the property.
And also we've got a sculpture
which is by Sifiso Mkhabela,
that's coming in.
And I think that will help
with aesthetic of the house.
- [Sifiso] Well, the inspiration
behind my sculptures is
from my childhood.
My dad is a boilermaker.
So I've always been
working with him,
watching him weld
and do his work.
So, right now I decided to
take the skills that he gave me
without even noticing that
he was giving them to me
and then make sculptures.
And then start of my career,
as an artist.
- [Danilo] Of all
three design Teams,
you've got the most exposed
outside of your home.
So how do you managed to
incorporate both privacy
and design aesthetic out here?
- Danilo, we favor
for no privacy.
So we're still trying to
keep the garden open plan,
so that when you're coming
from any point of the quarter,
you can actually see
everything that's here.
And we'd like to
showcase our pond,
which we think is the only
one of with a stone culture.
- Mm-mm, Tchepo and
Banele might believe
that they're the only
ones with a pond,
but they don't know what
Brad and Abiah are up to.
Each of our design duos are
hoping their garden houses,
the four-leaf Clover
that'll bring them luck
and that 10,000 Rand advantage.
Join us in the next
episode for the
grand garden reveals to find
out who has green thumbs
and who gets thumbs down
on, My Design Rules.
- [upbeat music]
---
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Last time
on My Design Rules,
our design-duos served up
kitchens to suit all tastes.
From the minimalist
artistic to urban chic
and a bit of glam.
These kitchens could not be
more different from each other.
Our judges had the tough
task of assessing the designs
and their feedback
was pretty spicy,
from a wobbly
stairway to heaven.
- Okay. No need to move that.
- [Narrator] To a scathing burn.
- The nicest thing about
this kitchen is the cake.
- [Narrator] Overall the
judges were impressed
by the design features
of the various kitchens
and chose Team Visi as the
winners of this challenge.
- [Lasego] I'm quite happy
we've taken two challenges now.
So other Teams, they should
just take us serious now.
- [upbeat music]
- Welcome to My Design Rules.
Each of our competing duos
have big dreams of
winning this competition,
but they all have one
small problem in common,
money.
After lavish spending in
the first few challenges,
And with two rooms
still left to decorate,
Team Habitat have 68,000 Rand
left of their cash budgets
Team Visi have 64,000 Rand
and truly feeling the pinch.
Team House and Leisure have
a measly 48,000 Rand left.
So clearly money's too tight
to mention for our duos,
but that hasn't stopped them
from lamenting about it.
- [upbeat music]
- [Mpho] The budget
is looking very swack.
It's looking very bad,
but we will make
sure we finish this.
- Yeah, she's, she's,
she's the finance.
- Now the purse is closed.
- So.
- [both laugh]
- Our budget is tight.
- It's been tight since I
think after the master bedroom.
- So it's been tight, so
we've learned how to--
- After the bathrooms.
- After the bathrooms,
it's been tight.
So now we know how to work
with the tight budgets.
- We are working on
a shoestring budget,
and we've literally have to
create magic with that budget.
- We will make it work, we
are miracle workers after all.
- [both laugh]
- [Danilo] Hello, contestants,
and welcome to your next
and penalty challenge
on season four.
For this challenge,
each of you is going to have
to think outside of the box
and outside of the home.
For this challenge,
you'll be designing and
decorating the patio and garden.
- How do you design a garden?
- ♪ Garden garden time .
- I feel like this
is a challenge where
everybody can just go crazy,
and I encourage
everybody to go crazy.
You can go crazy for plants.
- Go crazy for me? [laughs]
- Abiah, can hang a
chandelier wherever he can,
so just go crazy guys.
- [Danilo] Each duo will get
their very own green thumb.
We'll be allocating
a landscaping company
to each design Team
to turn the bear rebel outside,
into award-winning
patios and gardens.
But for this challenge,
there's a twist.
Not only are you competing
for a challenge to win,
but also the biggest
reward thus far.
The winning design duo of
this challenge will walk away
with 10,000 Rand
added to their budget
for the final challenge.
- [Lasego] Oh, so
- We need to win it.
- Yeah. We need that
10,000 Rand extra.
- We ran up our options.
Do we take the risk now and
spend a lot on the garden
to win that 10,000?
- So that you can
carry on that dream
in the rest of the house.
- So we're going
prakly with the garden.
- At this point,
thinking of that 10,000
it gives me chest pains
because if we get it,
it will make a huge difference.
- It'll be like a million
Rand to our budget.
- I know, right?
- [both laugh]
- Team Habitat are clearly
gunning for that 10,000 Rand
challenge win bonus
by gambling 40,000 Rand
on the outdoor area.
Team Visi are playing it
slightly more conservatively
allocating only 24,000
Rand to this challenge.
Plus their bonus from the
kitchen challenge win.
Team House and Leisure,
taking cognizance
of their budget woes
are allocating 15,000 Rand.
Thankfully,
because we want to see
these gardens truly bloom.
We've assigned each
of the design duos
a landscaping expert.
- [afro beat music]
- Thank you for coming through.
We just compiled some
images just to show you
what kind of mood
field we're going for
for the garden space and patio.
So we've got... Obviously
this is the beginning.
It's still a Sahara
desert, just sad.
It's dry.
So dry. So we want to season
it up, add some plants,
some water. Yeah.
Cause there's--
definitely cause we
started with running a pool
and so that's a bit out of
the budget. So we thought,
how do we incorporate some water
into the whole garden space?
- [Brad] So technically
we'd want a big pond.
- [Abiah] Absolutely.
As large as we can go.
- Yeah, lots of bridges.
- [all laugh]
- You know, just things
that keep it interesting.
Cause as you can see,
what we're standing
over is a fireplace
16 century
- [Brad] 18th century
- [Abiah] 18, 16, either
way, it's so sweet.
So, you know, we just
want to make the outdoor
feel like an extension of
the indoors for this area,
the patio.
- So listening to
what you guys wanted,
I've actually just designed a
water feature around the patio
and we have a seating
area over there
and then we'll be
having lawn all around
and we'll be having
some walkways
and bridges to...
just to create that intricate
movement and also the plants,
which will be
indigenous, you know,
just to give you that feel.
And they'll have a lot color.
Team Habitat is very
fantastic, you know.
They're a very nice duo,
they're very energetic
and their ideas are actually
flamboyant, you know,
and sometimes you just
have to reel them in
with some of the ideas.
But yeah, they're very
nice duo to work with.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Team
Visi meets with Craig,
from The Friendly Plants
to exchange ideas.
He will draw up a design and
later reveal the Master plan.
Meanwhile, one half of
Team House and Leisure
is meeting with their
landscaper from, Acton gardens.
- [Tchepo] I'm
meeting with Sarah.
And I think it's an amazing
thing that she's on board
cause she's educating
me about a lot of things
I didn't know
regarding landscaping.
So it's quite helpful
having her on board.
- [Sarah] There's quite
a large space here
being a corner stand.
So we need to look
at some focal points,
something that could attract
the viewers as attention
this space here,
we've got an aloe and
quite a large open window.
So what did you have in mind
for the feature in this corner?
- What we had
planned for this area
is to remove this aloe,
probably fit it somewhere
but then we need
to have like a pond
happening here,
which is gonna be one
of our focal points.
- [Sarah] I'm thinking your
water feature idea here,
something that's sort of
flowing from space to space
with a bit of a back wall that
sums features a feature wall.
- [Tchepo] That's going
to be really lovely.
And I think since we
have one of those walls,
that's part of like
the development.
It'll be nice to match that wall
to the wall that's
gonna be that side
for the two sides to balance.
- You mentioned that
you wanna have a walkway
coming from road
through to the patio.
What did you have
in mind for that?
- We're hoping to achieve that
with a bit of your
help, of course
Cause it's going to
be a bit of a DIY.
What we want to do is
have sort of like
organic shapes and then
in different sizes,
running into the patio.
And then on the other
side of the house,
we're gonna have a sculpture,
but that's still
like it still needs
to be finalized
because we have two
options to select from.
- [upbeat music]
- After the break the design
duos put petal to the medal
in the garden challenge
with a little horticultural
shopping spree.
- [upbeat music]
- [upbeat music]
- Aloe and welcome back
to My Design Rules.
To ensure the garden spaces
remain proudly South African,
our duos are restricted to
using indigenous plants.
So a trip to the local
garden center is in order.
- [Banele] We're
looking for plants,
and they're telling us we can
only have indigenous plants,
which is fitting because we've
been looking for local design
and now it makes us
have local plants.
- [Wayne] Right, So
these are they Clivia.
So they're gonna
work for you because,
well, firstly, they
water-wise, they're indigenous
and they're also flower.
So they attract all the bees.
So they like their
pollinator friendly,
which is what you want.
And actually most importantly,
they're going to fit into the
design that you want to do.
So I think this is actually
the one that you're
going to use.
- [Tchepo] I love that
they'll add a touch of color
to our garden.
- [Wayne] Perfect. So I
think you're gonna like them.
- Thank you so much.
- Aside from the expert advice
from the Team at
the garden center,
our design duos can also draw
on the wealth of knowledge
from their mentors.
Team Habitat met up with Amanda
to weed out what
the judges want.
- [Abiah] Meeting with Amanda.
- Sure, We didn't win
the kitchen challenge.
We were a little bit nervous
meeting Amanda.
- I'm sure you've heard
about the kitchen challenge.
- I have indeed.
- These judges are
like Katy Perry,
they're hot then they're cold
they're yes and then they're no
Ooh [sighs]
- we don't know anymore.
- There's somewhere around
there, they're like,
"we're lacking a lot
about personality."
- I'm confused to be honest.
because we've gone from
too much wrestle decile to
extreme minimalism, if you like,
and now there's not enough
of your personalities
coming through.
- I think it's time we attack
the garden's like gorillas
and go wild roaring wild.
- What are we looking at?
- [laughs]
- Um, can I expect to see
her at target or a leverage?
- Sure, if we can
get our hands on one.
- They'll definitely be one.
- It will coarse the judges
in the right direction.
- I wouldn't put it past you.
- [Brad] Scare them away.
- Let's start with
the furniture.
So, so far we were thinking
of something of this nature,
like in terms of having
seating, that will--
- [Brad] we're
up-cycling furniture.
Second-hand furniture.
- [Abiah] yeah.
- [Brad] So we've been
looking for indigenous plants.
- Yeah, keeping it proudly
South African or African.
- [Amanda] Aloes.
- Aloes
- [Amanda] cacti
- cacti
- Like some of these ones, yeah.
- Yes, We practically left the,
- [Abiah] I think that's
the indigenous grass
- Yes I love that too.
- [Brad] it's nice as a filler.
- [Amanda] You
wanna create a lush?
- [Abiah] Yes.
- Lovely garden.
- Yes.
- [Amanda] Okay, lighting's
going to be important--
- Sure, I was about...
I was afraid to
actually bring it up.
Can I just have one more
- No, no.
- Just one more.
Amanda, just one more.
- But even if I say no,
you don't obey me anyway,
You go ahead.
- Okay, but I'll
send you the picture
like we did with this one.
- [Amanda] And if
I don't approve it?
You'll do it anyway.
- I'll surprise you
just to surprise you.
[chuckles]
- [Brad] we got to bring
him from the back spot.
- We could possible consider it.
- Okay.
- [Brad] Amanda's on our side.
- [Abiah] Yes.
And we're gonna go hard and
we're gonna just put back
a little bit of attitude
into--
- A lot of attitude.
[laughs]
- [gentle music]
- [Mpho] Looking
through the garden,
and we find that they have
more hardscaping things
which are like pots, pavers.
- [Lasego] Everything
that we literally need
for the garden
So you know that we are
kind of like doing the
concrete jungle theme
for the outdoor gardens.
We want a simple
garden, low maintenance,
because of our client
is a single guy.
- [Mpho] So what we want
is an outdoor living space
um, we want our client to
be able to live outdoors
and do what they need to do.
That's why we've included
an outdoor dining area
as well as our um,
fire area.
- Yeah.
- All right, so then
what you to do is
look at some other
accessories. So, you know,
when you come to the nursery,
it's not only about plants
it can very definitely be or
everything you need to
make this outdoor room
because your garden is
actually an extension
of your home.
It's not just a garden,
it's somewhere where you
actually have to live.
So I think you guys
are on the right track,
trellising is something
you can maybe consider.
I think you can look
at doing something fun
with the trellising on
the walls or a screening.
So start playing
with ideas on that
because it's quite economical
and it's an easy way
to add a focal point.
- [Mpho] So that's
what we're gonna do.
I like that idea
- When you've done this,
Why don't you also
think of using,
you said concrete jungle.
- Yeah.
- So what about doing like
some of the concrete balls
or some pavers or
just something that's not
what people are going to
expect to find in your style?
- Lovely. I love all--
- Take it a bit outside the
box and into the garden.
- Awesome, let's get these.
- Perfect.
- [upbeat music]
- [Banele] We're doing the
Houtlander collaboration,
and what we've
been looking for is
out door furniture
that will actually
be weather proof and
weather resistant as well.
- We're actually looking for
outside furniture for our patio
and we liked this
bench as we walked in
- [Banele] and we love the
classic take on the wood
and the simplicity
which is so elegant
and we think would be
fitting for the space.
- [Stephen] Glad you like it.
Phillip and I are passionate
about Scandinavian design and
sort of timeless classics.
Those particular benches
inspired by echoes love bench.
It's got a coziness,
it's made for two
and we really feel like
we've made something that's
going to last forever.
For us,
design has to be timeless
and classic for that reason.
You want something that's
gonna look good
50 years from now
Not, not necessarily
just for a trend.
- [Tchepo] Can we have
it without the armrest?
- [Stephen] Absolutely.
And the armrest, we actually
sort of encourage for an area
where you'll be lounging.
If you're gonna sit at a table,
perhaps you don't
want the armrest
so you can slip
in and out of it.
It really depends
on the function.
- [Tchepo] I think the furniture
internists with this space,
because firstly it is wood
and we've been trying to
incorporate wood
throughout the house,
just to warm each and
every single space up.
So I believe that is
an amazing addition.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Team House
and Leisure mentor, Tiaan
arrives to discuss their
ideas and Vision for the
collaboration.
- [Tchepo] Tiaan, We want
like your advice on...
since we already
getting this furniture,
how can we put like
a signature on it?
- First of all,
this furniture is so beautiful
and the detailing
is so exquisite.
So you don't want to
distract from that too much.
I wouldn't necessarily add color
because I think it distracts,
the wood is so beautiful and
the shape is so sophisticated.
I wouldn't wanna
mess with that too much.
- Tiaan We're also getting a
coffee table and we're curious,
should we have around coffee
table or a square shaped?
- I would consider maybe
um, looking at a square shape or
rectangular shape that
would fill up the space
and then anchor the
space a little bit
as an outdoor living space,
opposed to small
furniture kind of like
scattered on the patio.
So yeah, I think
that we'll kind of
group it a little bit better.
- And Banele and I
are getting a swan.
- A Swan?
- [Tchepo] I'm just joking
- [all laugh]
- I'm joking.
- [laughter continues]
- Banele, doesn't seem
to know about this one.
- But we are getting a pond
and we're trying to
keep it quite organic.
And as if we found it in the
space instead of a manmade one.
- Perfect.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] After a
productive ideas exchange
with Craig from
The Friendly Plant,
it's time for Team Visi
and their mentor to see the
indigenous plant CS selected.
- Luckily Craig is very
good at what he does.
- He's an expert
in what he does.
He has a big farm, trust me.
- [Mpho] Huge farm.
- [Lasego] I think we have
an advantage from most duos
by having Craig.
So we need to use him in a way
where like, it needs to work.
- We've bought a selection
of your plants out
so that you can see
them all in one place
and give us a good idea of
what the garden's
going to look like.
- [Mpho] Craig, I also love how
you've kept to the indigenous
plants that we need,
but you've also found us
these beautiful green luscious
plants that have flowers.
I mean, when I think indigenous,
I think dry and aloes and
this absolutely is not that.
It's beautiful and
lash and vibrant
and I love that.
Annemarie, how do we
bring our personalities
and the personality
that is in the home,
out into the garden?
- Well, I think you guys
started it very well
by having this
imaginative owner,
the person you're
gonna do the home for,
and that you've worked
out his lifestyle,
what is he gonna
do over weekends?
What's he going to
do in his garden?
You know, and it's all
those types of things that
one looks at.
You stay in character.
Is there a way that
you can maybe show me
what you have in mind?
- Yeah, sure.
Let's go to the office and
I'll show you the design.
- [Mpho] Awesome, let's go.
- [Lasego] Annemarie
has helped us
not to lose track of our
concrete jungle theme.
It's more European, but
it has African style.
So rather use pop-up colors
instead of like doing patterns,
that'll be nice.
- [Craig] The way that the
garden fits together and
all the different
elements fit together
is going to give more of a wow.
When you look at the
totality of the garden,
as opposed to one
specific feature,
ideally it's a space
that you can relax in
and it's is a space that you
can kind of loose yourself in.
And the garden itself should be
a lush little concrete jungle.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Onsite,
Team House and Leisure
palms and walkway
with concrete pavers
are taking shape
as they bring their Vision
of an organic garden to life.
Team Habitat has gone
bold once more with a moat
running through most
of their garden space
as they bring a Regal
and glamorous touch
to their multifunctional patio.
Finally, Team Visi's garden
has been designed with
a very modern field.
It has a wow factor,
but easy to maintain
in keeping with a
concrete jungle theme.
- These gardens are definitely
going to be a celebration
of local flora.
After the break I
check in on the duos
to see how green their
fingers rarely are.
- [upbeat music]
- [upbeat music]
- Although our design
duos are fairly new
at landscape design,
they've had great help and
support in curating beautiful
outdoor spaces that
have really taken root.
Now at the halfway mark,
it's time for me to check in
and see how they are shaping up.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Every space
designed by Team Habitats
has a completely unexpected
out of the box element
in their garden
they've created a moat
where water can flow
throughout the outdoor space,
which naturally includes their
trademark artificial grass.
- I come bearing
gifts Abiah and Brad.
- Ah, thank you. But
isn't this one of ours?
- Excuse me don't be ungrateful.
A gift is a gift all
right, who knows?
This is looking
so cool and green,
the grass is green
on the other side.
- Absolutely. You know,
welcome to our chill area
and the garden space.
- Yes.
- You don't only get
one patio, but two.
- [Danilo] Two with
the price of one?
Or two with the price of two?
- Two for the price of one.
- [Danilo] Love it.
All right, describe
like a typical day
in the life out here.
- [Abiah] Well, it obviously
starts off with sunshine
and you'd be in this patio.
Patio number two with
the green grass or Gusta.
So if you've got allergies,
this is where you'd Suntan,
While looking at
the water flowing
feeling like you're on the beach
with your umbrella,
that's so happening
throwing shade onto the
patio and the neighbors,
- [laughs]
- Let's hope the judges
don't do the same.
Let's go do a quick tour.
- [laughs]
- [Brad] absolutely.
- [Danilo] So this is
like the moat I'd imagine.
So if you guys were in prison,
this would be your escape route.
- [Abiah] well, if
you've got businesses
that you just want to
throw into the Lake,
then it's your lake.
It's just a bit
Shallow for the cam.
- Yeah, we want it
to look like a Lake.
So we're gonna be
putting pebbles in
and we probably do going
to be painting the edges
the same color as the home,
- [Abiah] just to tie in
this whole merge and puzzle
in with the structure
of the house.
- [Danilo] What about the
actual nature side of things?
- [Abiah] There's gonna
be real grass here
and on this side,
lots of trees.
- We've got three trees coming.
- [Abiah] Yes.
And the front of the house.
- [Brad] Yes.
There'll be a lot of
plants there as well.
- Right, let's move
to patio number one.
Well at the halfway mark,
a lot of construction
has been done.
Looks very good are you
gonna be finished in time?
- Sure. By the grace of
mother nature. I hope so.
We just have to do
some tiling and then
- [Brad] the fireplace
is coming in.
- [Abiah] Yeah.
There's an opening
coming over here.
So we'll be shaded
next time around.
- The furniture needs to come in
table, couches.
- [Abiah] And of
course the water,
we need to just
fill up that dam.
- Well, keep the action
flowing. Good luck you two.
- Thank you.
- All right, thank you.
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Modern
and African seek.
have been the guiding words
for Team Visi's design indoors,
and they're aiming to create
the same aesthetic outdoors
with their garden and patio.
- [Danilo] How's my two
wins in a row Team doing?
WhatsApp?
- Hi Danilo.
- Right? What is the
plan out in your patio?
- Obviously we're the
Team that loves color.
So we wanna bring that
out here onto the patio.
So what we gonna do is,
introduce some bold
colors with our plants.
and also with our accessories.
- [Lasego] We're creating more
of an outdoor living space.
Cause of, we don't
have a dining,
so we, we're gonna have to
paint this table to match with
the rugged concrete kind of
black theme color and have like,
the black chairs, but a
little bit of low seating.
It's more of a relaxing space.
- [Mpho] And we've also
brought in a water feature.
So the sound will
also help calm you,
as well as our
beautiful Zen garden,
which is behind the house,
in a lovely shady area.
So you can go there and
unwind if necessary as well.
- [Lasego] So this garden,
it's going to be amazing.
- Basically,
you guys are going to be keeping
up with the Joneses then.
- I think the Joneses gonna
have to keep up with us.
- [Mpho laughs]
- [upbeat music]
- [Narrator] The
Joneses in this case
are Team House and Leisure,
who have the most exposed
garden of the three
their design plays
on natural shapes
while maintaining
a minimalist feel,
- [Tchepo] It's a
bit of a war zone.
- [Danilo] Aren't sure of
where I can and can't stand
and stand on a, like
a mine or something.
- [Tchepo] No. no, please
don't step on those.
- [Danilo] Oh, why?
They're still wet?
- [Tchepo] Yes.
- [Danilo shrieks]
- [Tchepo] So what we
basically tried doing is
we kept the really simple,
but then tried to
create like focal points
this side, this side,
and a planting area on the
other side of the house.
And then what delayed things
a bit is the pond because
they're clearing, sticking it
is taking a little bit longer,
but then once that's done
it's gonna flow like
a well-oiled machine.
- [Danilo] What about the mula?
You guys are running out
of money really quickly.
So have you kind of applied
that minimalist theme from
indoors, all the way into our
doors to keep the costs low?
- That is true.
We are doing minimal and it
starts with our furniture.
It's very minimal
Scandinavian inspired.
And it's designer
so that actually ups the
value of the property.
And also we've got a sculpture
which is by Sifiso Mkhabela,
that's coming in.
And I think that will help
with aesthetic of the house.
- [Sifiso] Well, the inspiration
behind my sculptures is
from my childhood.
My dad is a boilermaker.
So I've always been
working with him,
watching him weld
and do his work.
So, right now I decided to
take the skills that he gave me
without even noticing that
he was giving them to me
and then make sculptures.
And then start of my career,
as an artist.
- [Danilo] Of all
three design Teams,
you've got the most exposed
outside of your home.
So how do you managed to
incorporate both privacy
and design aesthetic out here?
- Danilo, we favor
for no privacy.
So we're still trying to
keep the garden open plan,
so that when you're coming
from any point of the quarter,
you can actually see
everything that's here.
And we'd like to
showcase our pond,
which we think is the only
one of with a stone culture.
- Mm-mm, Tchepo and
Banele might believe
that they're the only
ones with a pond,
but they don't know what
Brad and Abiah are up to.
Each of our design duos are
hoping their garden houses,
the four-leaf Clover
that'll bring them luck
and that 10,000 Rand advantage.
Join us in the next
episode for the
grand garden reveals to find
out who has green thumbs
and who gets thumbs down
on, My Design Rules.
