- Last time on My Design Rules
with two challenges
complete, the design duos
were given the task of
completing their master bedroom,
a space the owner will be
spending most of their time.
Team Contrast Control
chose to collaborate
on the bespoke wall pendant
that combines an African
jewelry-inspired wooden design
with Kehumile's own
personal abstract artwork.
Team R&K went big with a
three piece hanging painting
to fill the entire wall
across their master bed.
And the Perma Peeps were
dying to prove themselves
with custom ombre curtains.
Hello and welcome
to another episode
of interior design reality
show, My Design Rules,
a show that will
unlock a bright future
in the interior's industry
for our winning contestants.
With deadline fast approaching,
our design duos are going to
need all the help they can get
because time is of the essence.
(soft rock music)
- It's D day for our
master bedroom challenge
and we are waiting to
install our cabinets.
We can't wait to see
everything all in place.
It's just amazing.
- We have the
cupboards that are in,
but they're not complete.
- And then I think otherwise
we are waiting on window boxes
to be complete so that
we can get the blinds in.
- Last day for our
master bedroom.
Nothing is done.
The brocade is
still being painted.
I mean, it's just chaos
after chaos after chaos.
My goodness.
- Seeing those pendant
lights go in, whoo,
just makes everything
look like it's
gonna come together so well.
- There's actually no
mirrors in the room.
Our (muffled speaking)
haven't arrived.
Our odd pieces are not there.
I mean the room is
practically empty.
Well we have is a
brocade and a blue wall.
- I'm sitting there waiting
for something good to come.
I mean I'm just waiting
for something good,
and there it is with Emma!
And our beautiful artwork.
(screams) It's a setting!
- We are so excited.
This is exactly
what we had in mind.
Girl power, man.
- [Danilo] The teams
are forging ahead,
but time is running out
and there's still
lots to be done.
- Deadline day can
always get quite hairy.
Lots of different
cogs in the works.
- The dark color is
supposed to go onto there,
but I mean we can clean this up.
- [Melissa] It doesn't match
the white of this white wall.
- This white one is this one.
- But it should
all come together.
We're all hustling
and doing our best.
I wish people would talk,
but no, they just keep going.
- [Sinead] We'll just
paint the whole room gray.
- Let's just paint
it all gray again,
even though we already fixed it
from being painted
wrong the first time.
- Now it's the blinds
on their way in
and we can't wait to
see how these work.
We really went the extra mile
and got block hard blinds
that can go from the
bottom or from the top
or in the middle or
wherever you want,
wherever you need.
- However.
And the expenses, the expenses.
Our pockets (muffled speaking).
- Whoo!
The lights, they work.
Oh, the mood is on.
Ah!
- We decided to go
with a slightly
less labor-intensive
headboard this round
for a DIY undertaking inspired
by (muffled speaking) of course.
It's going very well.
We're loving the almost
moss like movement
that this velvet creates,
so it's looking very cool.
- The collab piece.
- So we just seen the pendants,
but we can't wait to
rip open this main piece
and see how it's
gonna come together.
- It's just gonna
frame it organically.
- So this is our collaboration
piece from Candace Lawrence.
Checking it out in real
life for the first time.
- Are you okay?
- Don't let me fall.
- I'm not gonna let you fall.
- Just catch me.
- [Sinead] I will catch you.
- We are finally
getting our curtains up.
Just as Carol recommended,
over the shoulder.
But they're still
pretty heavy though.
I can feel the burn.
Excited to get these things up
and then off of my
shoulder (laughs).
- [Sinead] Our (muffled
speaking) has arrived.
Things are coming
through, but time.
Time is our issue today.
- We are itching to get
our last few things in.
- We just want to
put everything in.
Like can this room
finish already?
- Everything's
unwrapped and waiting.
We're just waiting so we
can run and put it in.
- Contrast Control!
Sorry, I'm out of breath.
I ran up the stairs.
Bearer of bad news.
- No.
- What?
- Yeah.
- No.
- Yeah.
- What other news?
- One hour.
- What?
- One hour to go guys.
Get going, where's the bed?
- It's coming.
- It's coming, it's coming.
- [Nicholas] Just waiting for
these cupboards to be finished
and then we're--
- And then we're
gonna slot in the bed.
- All right,
you sound very chill.
Too chilled for my liking.
Too chill, that's one hour.
Good luck, just kill it.
(soft electronic music)
All right, so Team R&K
had some grand ideas
at the halfway mark,
but it's an hour to go.
How's it going?
Okay so--
- Hi.
- How's it going in here?
Oh my word.
- I know, right?
- [Danilo] Do you guys
know it's an hour to go?
- Yeah, we know.
Just all the grunt work is done.
All we have to do
is just sweep up.
- Come step over
here for a second.
- [Koketso] And
put our furniture.
- Guys, I've never
seen an hour point
towards the end of
deadline, this much chaos.
- Yeah, I know.
But it's all we need this
long needs to be done.
- Okay.
- Yeah, yeah.
- Are you guys taking
this seriously enough
to be able to get
this done in time?
- Oh yes, definitely.
- You sure?
- Everything else is just
waiting for install. We just
have to clean it out and then--
- [Danilo] Where's
your partner in crime?
- She's coming.
- Where is she?
- Getting our curtain.
- Right, we're collecting
curtains with an hour to go.
Will they be complete?
- Yes we will, we will.
When it looks bad all you
can do is just have faith
that everything
will come together.
And I mean, the
bigger the struggle,
the better the outcome.
(muffled speaking)
Yes!
- I love (muffled speaking).
(soft electronic music)
- Everything's coming together
despite there being so
many cogs in the works.
- We've arrived at Perma
Peeps at the halfway mark.
We want to show
what was happening
'cause it was an empty shell,
and I'm looking forward to
seeing what's happening now.
Hello.
- Hey, hey!
- This is looking so much
better than halfway mark.
Oh my word, I'm
excited and glad.
How stunning.
- I'm so glad you like it.
Yeah, we had to wait
until cabinets were in
before we could get our stuff in
to have everything out
the way to install.
So as soon as
everything was in we--
- I don't want to
disturb you at all.
You guys have got one
hour to go, all right?
To get everything neat and up
and ready to rock and roll.
This looks incredible,
those look cool.
How are you feeling?
- Good, and you?
- Got some (muffled speaking).
- I'm gonna bring some bad news.
- What?
- One hour.
Go, go, go, go, go!
- Oh, that's not so bad.
- That's not so bad.
- We'll make it,
we'll make it.
- Yeah, we're good.
(dramatic rhythmic music)
- What a nail biting
race to the finish line
of challenge three
on season five.
Team R&K seem like the had
a lot of work still to do
at the one hour mark with
one team member down.
Then obviously we had
Team Contrast Control
looking as smooth as always.
And then last but not
least obviously we
had the Perma Peeps.
They haven't won a challenge yet
and all pressure was on.
They seem to be done
at the one hour mark.
It's deadline time.
(horn blaring)
- For once that horn
did not make us cry.
- [Nicholas] Yeah.
- Yeah, like that
horn though, the horn.
- (sighs) That darn horn
ruining our mellow vibes.
But we're done,
it looks amazing.
- That's it, time's up.
(clapping)
Still in faith, came through.
- Amen.
- Deadline has arrived and
my word, our design duos
know how to push the
boundaries of their time.
But somehow they managed
to meet deadline.
I for one am excited to
see the final product
of their master bedrooms,
which we all get to
see after the break.
(upbeat electronic music)
(upbeat electronic music)
Welcome back to My Design Rules.
It's time now to find
out if our design duos
managed to master designing
those master bedrooms.
(soft electronic music)
Ladies, this is insane.
I feel like I'm in a spa.
- Ah.
- It's beautiful.
- Thank you so much.
- Wow.
- Thank you.
- That makes us so happy
to hear, we love it.
We decided to bring
in some muted color.
It's nice and soft and
not overstimulating
as a bedroom space.
- I love the fact that I feel
like I'm in the outdoors.
It's got such an
essence of Africa.
- Our client has
that African feel,
so we wanted that
outdoor feel to come in
with the African
bits and pieces.
And that kind of a warmth.
- What's more African
than nature, you know?
- Exactly so.
- Like a piece of literal
earth kind of thing, yeah.
- All eyes are
gonna be on you guys
from the judge's perspective,
'cause obviously you
are the only team
to have not won a
challenge just yet so.
- Yes.
- Are there elements
that you've produced
that you're just in love with?
- We've given them
the minimalist angle,
and now we've given them
a whole lot of storage
and just in our
opinion we really put
in a lot of efforts here.
So we're hoping that
they feel the space
and that they like it.
If they don't,
then we're gonna start
taking things personally.
(laughing)
- For me personally, I'm
in love with our headboard
that we made ourselves
as Perma Peeps.
- You have to touch it.
It's just the most
amazing fabric.
- Cool.
- We also have our custom
dirty pink velvet curtains,
which we dip dyed the bottom of
and we intended for
it to be darker.
But as soon as we saw
that beautiful color
that matched the stitching
in our scatter cushions,
we were just like,
"Nope, don't touch it.
"Leave it as is."
Happiness all around.
Overall, we are super proud
and just chuffed in general
with our space.
We love it.
- We love it. I wish
we could stay here.
- Just from my side,
a huge congratulations
on this challenge.
I saw you poured
your heart and soul
into your master bedroom.
It's all up to the judges now.
- Thanks so much,
good to see ya.
- Good luck, ciao.
- Bye.
(upbeat rock music)
- What's up gents?
- Whoa!
- This must be the
master bedroom.
- No shoes please, no
shoes please, please.
- Oh, one of those space.
What socks do I have on today?
- Way!
- Don't look, don't look,
don't look!
Guys, this place is a
sanctuary, it's awesome.
- Thanks.
- Why thank you.
- [Danilo] What were the ideas
when you put this together?
- So basically how
we envisioned this
was it being a very moody,
very lax kind of room.
We just wanted to add
a lot of detail in it,
but still keeping it simple
and very comfortable.
- With two wins in the bag,
what is going to
be the wow factor
in your master bedroom that
will convince the judges
to give you that third win?
- One of the favorite
bespoke pieces in this space
would be the built-in cupboards
because they contrast
the pink carpets.
Looks like it's a
black wall there,
but it kind of works
well with the lights.
- One thing we put
a lot of effort into
was using up the rest of
our (muffled speaking).
I think that brings a lot of
natural warmth into the room.
- And the art piece.
I had to collaborate
with Candace Lawrence
who wove around that frame.
And I drew the inside of it.
- And no curtains?
- Well, we got the blinds
and Sarah also recommended we
use the bottom half blinds.
Block out was a big expense.
So the winnings from the
previous round really
helped us out with that.
- Based on the judges'
feedback previously
what could some of
their concerns be in
your master bedroom?
Could it be too masculine?
- [Nicholas] I think we've
contrasted the feminine
edges quite well
in this space with the
colors that we went for.
And yeah, just the
general finishes.
- Great gents. Well the
judges are on their way.
Let's make it three for three.
- Please and thank you.
- We'll try our best.
- Thank you.
- Cheers.
(smooth swanky rock music)
- Team R&K, I think
this deserves a slow
clap for you guys.
I was so nervous this
wouldn't come together.
Look at you, look at you!
- Look at us!
- Thank you, thank you.
- Talk me through your ideas
in your master bedroom.
- [Koketso] I mean this person's
gonna spend most of their time
in there. We just
wanted to create a room
where you just want
to get in and sleep.
- [Rekopile] Bedrooms
are a place of rest.
So it's imperative
when they come in here
that it almost takes them
away from the ordinary world.
Indeed they are walking into
something that is personal
and that's very intimate.
- Let's get to the key elements
in your master bedroom.
And begin with this painting.
- [Rekopile] This is everything.
When you enter the room
it's overwhelmingly gorgeous
and stunning.
This is a 3D mural done
by a beautiful lady
called Emma Norris.
We wanted her to
play with color.
We wanted to pick from our
(muffled speaking) bathroom.
Pick some colors as well.
It's magnificent.
- [Danilo] And other key pieces?
- The sculpture.
Moo!
It's so little,
but so significant
again that we adore it.
- [Koketso] Yeah, and it just
picks up on all the charcoal
that's in this room, you know?
All the colors have
to balance each other
and also compliment each other.
- That literally puts
skull back in sculpture.
(laughing)
As designers, you need to
learn to be self critical.
What could be some
of the elements
that the judges will maybe
not like or feel concerned by?
Like for instance
no cupboard space?
- [Koketso] Oh, yo, I don't
know what they would not like.
We've kind of played
with every element.
It you want to talk about color,
we brought into the
space but no too much.
If you want to
talk about texture,
the curtains are different.
It's fabric.
You're talking about 3D
effects of the wall, mirror.
We've played with lighting.
We've also played
with the space.
We didn't bring closets in here,
because of course,
as you would know,
our closets were
in the glam room.
- All right, ladies. I
wish you all the best.
The judges are on their way.
Good luck.
- Thank you so much Dan.
- Thank you.
- Thank you, have a great one.
Bye bye.
- Oh man, I certainly
did not think our duos
would be done on time,
when with just an hour to go
there was literally nothing
in those spaces.
Well, they certainly pulled
the rabbit out of the hat
with this one,
but there's no time to rest.
Why?
Because the judges
are approaching.
(upbeat electronic music)
(upbeat electronic music)
Welcome back to My Design Rules.
Now the master bedroom
challenge was no easy feat.
We literally threw
our design contestants
into the deep end.
It's time for the judges
to view their apartment
and decide whether
they will sink or swim.
(delicate electronic music)
Right in the nick of time, duos.
Congratulations however
on completing your
first single challenge,
your master bedrooms.
They are spectacular.
Well done.
The real question now
is who was napping
during this challenge
and who was the master
of the master bedroom?
The judges have arrived to
view your master bedrooms.
- [Sinead] Oh, the
judges are here.
- There goes our
quiet confidence.
- They are Slade Brookes,
property executive
Balwin Properties.
Bryan Courtney, from
private property.
Buhle Mathole, Kabu
Design Architects.
And your guest judge and
mentor for this challenge,
Sarah Ord.
- The judges are here
and we really hope
that they appreciate
that massive canvas we have.
- 'Sup.
- Amazing.
- The art is spectacular.
- Oh wow, thank you,
thank you Bryan.
(laughing)
- I think Team R&K
showed great taste
in the artwork in
the main bedroom.
It was a real show stopper.
I've never seen
anything like it before.
- Yeah, wow, hey.
That art piece opposite the
bed is just extraordinary.
You almost feel you need to
back up against the pillows.
You lie in bed and you can
see it in all its glory.
- I'm seeing a lot of
lighting in this room.
Let's see how it looks
with the curtains closed.
The drama came through.
It became a new room
and some way it definitely
get comfortable,
cozy and quite an elegant
feel to it at the end.
- Yeah, I mean they've
done a lot of work
in terms of the
brocades, different
kinds of lighting again.
I see they used this
idea which is a good one
to cover the curtain rail.
It gives you different
dips in the ceiling.
- It was very interesting
to look at the room.
I did feel however they
didn't have a strong idea
that they were running with.
So it was a whole lot of ideas
that were being explored,
but there's nothing that
brought it into one whole.
- There were some drawbacks,
like they could've
added some storage
in the side tables for example.
But you can't help but
notice the overall impression
was beautiful.
(soft upbeat music)
- Yo, I really hope those judges
appreciate those blinds.
And the ceiling,
the burnt ceiling.
We had to burn that ourselves.
- [Both] Wow.
- Sure.
Oh, I remember these
from the spare room.
Beautiful.
The guys brought design elements
into their main
bedroom beautifully.
That feature wall above
the bed as you walked in
was just spectacular.
And in those little
storage boxes on the right
that brought through
that African chic.
Similar to what we saw
in their spare bedroom,
so that was a nice touch.
- I love what they've done
also with the ceiling.
It's the same wooden effect.
And this time around,
the cupboard can open.
It's right recessed and
they've kept the same texture,
so that's beautiful.
I really love the ceiling
because it was feedback
they'd been given and they
did something about it.
They tried to resolve
and work on the materials
and the texture on the brocade.
- Yo, very nice.
And I see they used my advice
on the concertina blinds
that go up and down.
They went with the blinds
that I had suggested,
which I think really work
in terms of framing the view
as almost a piece of
artwork on its own.
- Definitely loving
those blinds,
but if I had to say
there's something amazing
in this room,
it must be this
modern dream catcher.
And then pulling it in
with the side lamps,
it's all just brought
in together well.
It gives it a good
flow to the room.
- You've got a full
blown wardrobe in there,
although it is quite
imposing being so dark.
But I think the mirror
on the two outside
doors breaks that.
So they did well to
create a very plush,
quirky kind of space.
(soft folk music)
- [Melissa] We really
hope the judges notice
how we've brought in the
natural stone element
through from our
bathrooms into the space.
- We also hope that they notice
how big those boulders are.
And how it was difficult
to get them up there.
(laughing)
(sighing)
- Oh wow.
- Wow!
I love the comeback
on the cupboards.
There's definitely a lot of
cupboard space in this space.
They were criticized on
not having enough storage,
and this time they really
went to town about that.
- Sure.
The finish on the
cupboards is incredible.
Gives that whole rock heavy
feel like the bathrooms,
but beautiful, beautiful.
The Perma Peeps did a great
job with their main bedroom.
They way they brought
through that stone effect
on the cupboards was amazing.
There was lots of storage
space, which was a bonus.
It was really clever how
they linked that through
to the bathrooms with the
slates in the bathrooms.
That was wonderful.
It was funny though when
Slade nearly knocked his head
on that shelf just
above the bed.
But otherwise, beautiful job.
- Oh, I like the use of
different types of lighting.
That sort of basket weave
idea that fills the space.
And these low ones next to the
bed makes it all quite moody.
The immediate sensation you
get is of beautiful texture
and very tactile
fabrics and surfaces.
You really don't
get the impression
that there's anything
synthetic in there.
It's all very natural.
Even the very gentle,
muted color scheme.
You want to lie on that bed.
- I say, I'm quite
happy over here
with my natural
stone next to me.
Some plants above me.
I love the natural flow.
All the green elements.
The big rock features
inside there.
Gives a nice tranquil
peaceful vibe to the unit.
Definitely somewhere
I can see myself
getting a good glass of wine
and finishing my day off.
I think I'm making myself a
bit too comfortable in here.
- Should we leave you to it?
- Oh, you enjoy that.
- Yeah, I'm gonna have a
look some more of the details
in this room, Bryan.
- See you later.
- Thank you.
- And with our judges
passing comment
on our duo's third challenge,
we've officially passed the
halfway mark of the competition.
But who's design held the
key to the judges' praise?
It's time for that verdict.
(intense dance music)
Can you believe it, design duos?
We're officially halfway there.
The judges have viewed
each of your spaces
and it's time to
reveal their feedback.
Let's start with you Team R&K.
That custom art
piece on your wall,
all the judges had to say was,
"Wow."
Congratulations.
They loved your custom
design elements you brought
into the space, like
your bespoke bulkhead
and the way the
lights bounced off it.
However, with so many
different ideas in your space,
they felt like
something was lacking
to just tie it all together.
- I don't know what
these judges want.
I love them, but
what do they want?
- The Perma Peeps, the
judges loved how you
brought all your
natural elements from
your master bathroom
right into your master bedroom.
Your headboard was
also a hit as well,
as the finishes you
chose for your cupboards.
However, they were a
little bit concerned
that your client might bump
their head on that low shelf
above your bed.
- We were a little bit
worried about that shelf.
- But at least everything else
has definitely
impressed the judges,
and yeah, we did our best.
- [Danilo] Team
Contrast Control,
the judges loved your
bespoke art piece
above your master bed.
They also enjoyed how
you brought elements
from your other rooms
into your master bedroom,
like those box
shelves on your wall.
However, with the dark ceiling
and those black cupboards,
did you perhaps make the
room a bit too moody?
- I'll take that criticism.
I'm quite happy with how the
room feels and came across.
- This is just taste, you know?
- With that out the way,
it's time to announce
our winning duo.
This was the toughest
decision our judges
have had to make thus far.
And the winner of the
master bedroom challenge is
(dramatic suspenseful music)
the Perma Peeps.
- Oh my God!
(laughing)
(clapping)
- Finally!
- Yay!
- [Both] Finally!
- We won one challenge.
That's all we wanted.
Just want to win at least.
- As the winners
of this challenge,
you'll receive an extra 5,000
rand added to your budget
to add value to your property.
Congratulations ladies.
- I think that after we've
now won this challenge
we definitely have a
little bit more confidence.
- Oh, keen for the
next challenge.
- We really need
to bring it now.
- Oh, competition is
getting tight, eh?
(clapping)
- The Perma Peeps may
be celebrating their
first challenge win
in the competition,
but with a near
even playing field,
it really is anyone's
game at this point.
Join us again in the next
episode for more design drama
on My Design Rules.
Next time on My Design Rules
the competition gets
cooking as the design duos
start creating the
heart of their homes,
the open plan kitchen
with some of the most
ambitious collaborations yet.
Will their designs be
a recipe for success,
or will it all go up in flames?
- Well, we all about
pushing boundaries, honey.
- Cheers.
- This is insane.
- That is wild.
- [Danilo] Watch all
the design drama unfold
and see who rules supreme
at the end of the day,
only on My Design Rules.
- [Announcer] Another
feel good production.

complete, the design duos

Hello and welcome
to another episode
of interior design reality
show, My Design Rules,
a show that will
unlock a bright future
in the interior's industry
for our winning contestants.
With deadline fast approaching,
our design duos are going to
need all the help they can get
because time is of the essence.
(soft rock music)
- It's D day for our
master bedroom challenge
and we are waiting to
install our cabinets.
We can't wait to see
everything all in place.
It's just amazing.
- We have the
cupboards that are in,
but they're not complete.
- And then I think otherwise
we are waiting on window boxes
to be complete so that
we can get the blinds in.
- Last day for our
master bedroom.
Nothing is done.
The brocade is
still being painted.
I mean, it's just chaos
after chaos after chaos.
My goodness.
- Seeing those pendant
lights go in, whoo,
just makes everything
look like it's
gonna come together so well.
- There's actually no
mirrors in the room.
Our (muffled speaking)
haven't arrived.
Our odd pieces are not there.
I mean the room is
practically empty.
Well we have is a
brocade and a blue wall.
- I'm sitting there waiting
for something good to come.
I mean I'm just waiting
for something good,
and there it is with Emma!
And our beautiful artwork.
(screams) It's a setting!
- We are so excited.
This is exactly
what we had in mind.
Girl power, man.
- [Danilo] The teams
are forging ahead,
but time is running out
and there's still
lots to be done.
- Deadline day can
always get quite hairy.
Lots of different
cogs in the works.
- The dark color is
supposed to go onto there,
but I mean we can clean this up.
- [Melissa] It doesn't match
the white of this white wall.
- This white one is this one.
- But it should
all come together.
We're all hustling
and doing our best.
I wish people would talk,
but no, they just keep going.
- [Sinead] We'll just
paint the whole room gray.
- Let's just paint
it all gray again,
even though we already fixed it
from being painted
wrong the first time.
- Now it's the blinds
on their way in
and we can't wait to
see how these work.
We really went the extra mile
and got block hard blinds
that can go from the
bottom or from the top
or in the middle or
wherever you want,
wherever you need.
- However.
And the expenses, the expenses.
Our pockets (muffled speaking).
- Whoo!
The lights, they work.
Oh, the mood is on.
Ah!
- We decided to go
with a slightly
less labor-intensive
headboard this round
for a DIY undertaking inspired
by (muffled speaking) of course.
It's going very well.
We're loving the almost
moss like movement
that this velvet creates,
so it's looking very cool.
- The collab piece.
- So we just seen the pendants,
but we can't wait to
rip open this main piece
and see how it's
gonna come together.
- It's just gonna
frame it organically.
- So this is our collaboration
piece from Candace Lawrence.
Checking it out in real
life for the first time.
- Are you okay?
- Don't let me fall.
- I'm not gonna let you fall.
- Just catch me.
- [Sinead] I will catch you.
- We are finally
getting our curtains up.
Just as Carol recommended,
over the shoulder.
But they're still
pretty heavy though.
I can feel the burn.
Excited to get these things up
and then off of my
shoulder (laughs).
- [Sinead] Our (muffled
speaking) has arrived.
Things are coming
through, but time.
Time is our issue today.
- We are itching to get
our last few things in.
- We just want to
put everything in.
Like can this room
finish already?
- Everything's
unwrapped and waiting.
We're just waiting so we
can run and put it in.
- Contrast Control!
Sorry, I'm out of breath.
I ran up the stairs.
Bearer of bad news.
- No.
- What?
- Yeah.
- No.
- Yeah.
- What other news?
- One hour.
- What?
- One hour to go guys.
Get going, where's the bed?
- It's coming.
- It's coming, it's coming.
- [Nicholas] Just waiting for
these cupboards to be finished
and then we're--
- And then we're
gonna slot in the bed.
- All right,
you sound very chill.
Too chilled for my liking.
Too chill, that's one hour.
Good luck, just kill it.
(soft electronic music)
All right, so Team R&K
had some grand ideas
at the halfway mark,
but it's an hour to go.
How's it going?
Okay so--
- Hi.
- How's it going in here?
Oh my word.
- I know, right?
- [Danilo] Do you guys
know it's an hour to go?
- Yeah, we know.
Just all the grunt work is done.
All we have to do
is just sweep up.
- Come step over
here for a second.
- [Koketso] And
put our furniture.
- Guys, I've never
seen an hour point
towards the end of
deadline, this much chaos.
- Yeah, I know.
But it's all we need this
long needs to be done.
- Okay.
- Yeah, yeah.
- Are you guys taking
this seriously enough
to be able to get
this done in time?
- Oh yes, definitely.
- You sure?
- Everything else is just
waiting for install. We just
have to clean it out and then--
- [Danilo] Where's
your partner in crime?
- She's coming.
- Where is she?
- Getting our curtain.
- Right, we're collecting
curtains with an hour to go.
Will they be complete?
- Yes we will, we will.
When it looks bad all you
can do is just have faith
that everything
will come together.
And I mean, the
bigger the struggle,
the better the outcome.
(muffled speaking)
Yes!
- I love (muffled speaking).
(soft electronic music)
- Everything's coming together
despite there being so
many cogs in the works.
- We've arrived at Perma
Peeps at the halfway mark.
We want to show
what was happening
'cause it was an empty shell,
and I'm looking forward to
seeing what's happening now.
Hello.
- Hey, hey!
- This is looking so much
better than halfway mark.
Oh my word, I'm
excited and glad.
How stunning.
- I'm so glad you like it.
Yeah, we had to wait
until cabinets were in
before we could get our stuff in
to have everything out
the way to install.
So as soon as
everything was in we--
- I don't want to
disturb you at all.
You guys have got one
hour to go, all right?
To get everything neat and up
and ready to rock and roll.
This looks incredible,
those look cool.
How are you feeling?
- Good, and you?
- Got some (muffled speaking).
- I'm gonna bring some bad news.
- What?
- One hour.
Go, go, go, go, go!
- Oh, that's not so bad.
- That's not so bad.
- We'll make it,
we'll make it.
- Yeah, we're good.
(dramatic rhythmic music)
- What a nail biting
race to the finish line
of challenge three
on season five.
Team R&K seem like the had
a lot of work still to do
at the one hour mark with
one team member down.
Then obviously we had
Team Contrast Control
looking as smooth as always.
And then last but not
least obviously we
had the Perma Peeps.
They haven't won a challenge yet
and all pressure was on.
They seem to be done
at the one hour mark.
It's deadline time.
(horn blaring)
- For once that horn
did not make us cry.
- [Nicholas] Yeah.
- Yeah, like that
horn though, the horn.
- (sighs) That darn horn
ruining our mellow vibes.
But we're done,
it looks amazing.
- That's it, time's up.
(clapping)
Still in faith, came through.
- Amen.
- Deadline has arrived and
my word, our design duos
know how to push the
boundaries of their time.
But somehow they managed
to meet deadline.
I for one am excited to
see the final product
of their master bedrooms,
which we all get to
see after the break.
(upbeat electronic music)
(upbeat electronic music)
Welcome back to My Design Rules.
It's time now to find
out if our design duos
managed to master designing
those master bedrooms.
(soft electronic music)
Ladies, this is insane.
I feel like I'm in a spa.
- Ah.
- It's beautiful.
- Thank you so much.
- Wow.
- Thank you.
- That makes us so happy
to hear, we love it.
We decided to bring
in some muted color.
It's nice and soft and
not overstimulating
as a bedroom space.
- I love the fact that I feel
like I'm in the outdoors.
It's got such an
essence of Africa.
- Our client has
that African feel,
so we wanted that
outdoor feel to come in
with the African
bits and pieces.
And that kind of a warmth.
- What's more African
than nature, you know?
- Exactly so.
- Like a piece of literal
earth kind of thing, yeah.
- All eyes are
gonna be on you guys
from the judge's perspective,
'cause obviously you
are the only team
to have not won a
challenge just yet so.
- Yes.
- Are there elements
that you've produced
that you're just in love with?
- We've given them
the minimalist angle,
and now we've given them
a whole lot of storage
and just in our
opinion we really put
in a lot of efforts here.
So we're hoping that
they feel the space
and that they like it.
If they don't,
then we're gonna start
taking things personally.
(laughing)
- For me personally, I'm
in love with our headboard
that we made ourselves
as Perma Peeps.
- You have to touch it.
It's just the most
amazing fabric.
- Cool.
- We also have our custom
dirty pink velvet curtains,
which we dip dyed the bottom of
and we intended for
it to be darker.
But as soon as we saw
that beautiful color
that matched the stitching
in our scatter cushions,
we were just like,
"Nope, don't touch it.
"Leave it as is."
Happiness all around.
Overall, we are super proud
and just chuffed in general
with our space.
We love it.
- We love it. I wish
we could stay here.
- Just from my side,
a huge congratulations
on this challenge.
I saw you poured
your heart and soul
into your master bedroom.
It's all up to the judges now.
- Thanks so much,
good to see ya.
- Good luck, ciao.
- Bye.
(upbeat rock music)
- What's up gents?
- Whoa!
- This must be the
master bedroom.
- No shoes please, no
shoes please, please.
- Oh, one of those space.
What socks do I have on today?
- Way!
- Don't look, don't look,
don't look!
Guys, this place is a
sanctuary, it's awesome.
- Thanks.
- Why thank you.
- [Danilo] What were the ideas
when you put this together?
- So basically how
we envisioned this
was it being a very moody,
very lax kind of room.
We just wanted to add
a lot of detail in it,
but still keeping it simple
and very comfortable.
- With two wins in the bag,
what is going to
be the wow factor
in your master bedroom that
will convince the judges
to give you that third win?
- One of the favorite
bespoke pieces in this space
would be the built-in cupboards
because they contrast
the pink carpets.
Looks like it's a
black wall there,
but it kind of works
well with the lights.
- One thing we put
a lot of effort into
was using up the rest of
our (muffled speaking).
I think that brings a lot of
natural warmth into the room.
- And the art piece.
I had to collaborate
with Candace Lawrence
who wove around that frame.
And I drew the inside of it.
- And no curtains?
- Well, we got the blinds
and Sarah also recommended we
use the bottom half blinds.
Block out was a big expense.
So the winnings from the
previous round really
helped us out with that.
- Based on the judges'
feedback previously
what could some of
their concerns be in
your master bedroom?
Could it be too masculine?
- [Nicholas] I think we've
contrasted the feminine
edges quite well
in this space with the
colors that we went for.
And yeah, just the
general finishes.
- Great gents. Well the
judges are on their way.
Let's make it three for three.
- Please and thank you.
- We'll try our best.
- Thank you.
- Cheers.
(smooth swanky rock music)
- Team R&K, I think
this deserves a slow
clap for you guys.
I was so nervous this
wouldn't come together.
Look at you, look at you!
- Look at us!
- Thank you, thank you.
- Talk me through your ideas
in your master bedroom.
- [Koketso] I mean this person's
gonna spend most of their time
in there. We just
wanted to create a room
where you just want
to get in and sleep.
- [Rekopile] Bedrooms
are a place of rest.
So it's imperative
when they come in here
that it almost takes them
away from the ordinary world.
Indeed they are walking into
something that is personal
and that's very intimate.
- Let's get to the key elements
in your master bedroom.
And begin with this painting.
- [Rekopile] This is everything.
When you enter the room
it's overwhelmingly gorgeous
and stunning.
This is a 3D mural done
by a beautiful lady
called Emma Norris.
We wanted her to
play with color.
We wanted to pick from our
(muffled speaking) bathroom.
Pick some colors as well.
It's magnificent.
- [Danilo] And other key pieces?
- The sculpture.
Moo!
It's so little,
but so significant
again that we adore it.
- [Koketso] Yeah, and it just
picks up on all the charcoal
that's in this room, you know?
All the colors have
to balance each other
and also compliment each other.
- That literally puts
skull back in sculpture.
(laughing)
As designers, you need to
learn to be self critical.
What could be some
of the elements
that the judges will maybe
not like or feel concerned by?
Like for instance
no cupboard space?
- [Koketso] Oh, yo, I don't
know what they would not like.
We've kind of played
with every element.
It you want to talk about color,
we brought into the
space but no too much.
If you want to
talk about texture,
the curtains are different.
It's fabric.
You're talking about 3D
effects of the wall, mirror.
We've played with lighting.
We've also played
with the space.
We didn't bring closets in here,
because of course,
as you would know,
our closets were
in the glam room.
- All right, ladies. I
wish you all the best.
The judges are on their way.
Good luck.
- Thank you so much Dan.
- Thank you.
- Thank you, have a great one.
Bye bye.
- Oh man, I certainly
did not think our duos
would be done on time,
when with just an hour to go
there was literally nothing
in those spaces.
Well, they certainly pulled
the rabbit out of the hat
with this one,
but there's no time to rest.
Why?
Because the judges
are approaching.
(upbeat electronic music)
(upbeat electronic music)
Welcome back to My Design Rules.
Now the master bedroom
challenge was no easy feat.
We literally threw
our design contestants
into the deep end.
It's time for the judges
to view their apartment
and decide whether
they will sink or swim.
(delicate electronic music)
Right in the nick of time, duos.
Congratulations however
on completing your
first single challenge,
your master bedrooms.
They are spectacular.
Well done.
The real question now
is who was napping
during this challenge
and who was the master
of the master bedroom?
The judges have arrived to
view your master bedrooms.
- [Sinead] Oh, the
judges are here.
- There goes our
quiet confidence.
- They are Slade Brookes,
property executive
Balwin Properties.
Bryan Courtney, from
private property.
Buhle Mathole, Kabu
Design Architects.
And your guest judge and
mentor for this challenge,
Sarah Ord.
- The judges are here
and we really hope
that they appreciate
that massive canvas we have.
- 'Sup.
- Amazing.
- The art is spectacular.
- Oh wow, thank you,
thank you Bryan.
(laughing)
- I think Team R&K
showed great taste
in the artwork in
the main bedroom.
It was a real show stopper.
I've never seen
anything like it before.
- Yeah, wow, hey.
That art piece opposite the
bed is just extraordinary.
You almost feel you need to
back up against the pillows.
You lie in bed and you can
see it in all its glory.
- I'm seeing a lot of
lighting in this room.
Let's see how it looks
with the curtains closed.
The drama came through.
It became a new room
and some way it definitely
get comfortable,
cozy and quite an elegant
feel to it at the end.
- Yeah, I mean they've
done a lot of work
in terms of the
brocades, different
kinds of lighting again.
I see they used this
idea which is a good one
to cover the curtain rail.
It gives you different
dips in the ceiling.
- It was very interesting
to look at the room.
I did feel however they
didn't have a strong idea
that they were running with.
So it was a whole lot of ideas
that were being explored,
but there's nothing that
brought it into one whole.
- There were some drawbacks,
like they could've
added some storage
in the side tables for example.
But you can't help but
notice the overall impression
was beautiful.
(soft upbeat music)
- Yo, I really hope those judges
appreciate those blinds.
And the ceiling,
the burnt ceiling.
We had to burn that ourselves.
- [Both] Wow.
- Sure.
Oh, I remember these
from the spare room.
Beautiful.
The guys brought design elements
into their main
bedroom beautifully.
That feature wall above
the bed as you walked in
was just spectacular.
And in those little
storage boxes on the right
that brought through
that African chic.
Similar to what we saw
in their spare bedroom,
so that was a nice touch.
- I love what they've done
also with the ceiling.
It's the same wooden effect.
And this time around,
the cupboard can open.
It's right recessed and
they've kept the same texture,
so that's beautiful.
I really love the ceiling
because it was feedback
they'd been given and they
did something about it.
They tried to resolve
and work on the materials
and the texture on the brocade.
- Yo, very nice.
And I see they used my advice
on the concertina blinds
that go up and down.
They went with the blinds
that I had suggested,
which I think really work
in terms of framing the view
as almost a piece of
artwork on its own.
- Definitely loving
those blinds,
but if I had to say
there's something amazing
in this room,
it must be this
modern dream catcher.
And then pulling it in
with the side lamps,
it's all just brought
in together well.
It gives it a good
flow to the room.
- You've got a full
blown wardrobe in there,
although it is quite
imposing being so dark.
But I think the mirror
on the two outside
doors breaks that.
So they did well to
create a very plush,
quirky kind of space.
(soft folk music)
- [Melissa] We really
hope the judges notice
how we've brought in the
natural stone element
through from our
bathrooms into the space.
- We also hope that they notice
how big those boulders are.
And how it was difficult
to get them up there.
(laughing)
(sighing)
- Oh wow.
- Wow!
I love the comeback
on the cupboards.
There's definitely a lot of
cupboard space in this space.
They were criticized on
not having enough storage,
and this time they really
went to town about that.
- Sure.
The finish on the
cupboards is incredible.
Gives that whole rock heavy
feel like the bathrooms,
but beautiful, beautiful.
The Perma Peeps did a great
job with their main bedroom.
They way they brought
through that stone effect
on the cupboards was amazing.
There was lots of storage
space, which was a bonus.
It was really clever how
they linked that through
to the bathrooms with the
slates in the bathrooms.
That was wonderful.
It was funny though when
Slade nearly knocked his head
on that shelf just
above the bed.
But otherwise, beautiful job.
- Oh, I like the use of
different types of lighting.
That sort of basket weave
idea that fills the space.
And these low ones next to the
bed makes it all quite moody.
The immediate sensation you
get is of beautiful texture
and very tactile
fabrics and surfaces.
You really don't
get the impression
that there's anything
synthetic in there.
It's all very natural.
Even the very gentle,
muted color scheme.
You want to lie on that bed.
- I say, I'm quite
happy over here
with my natural
stone next to me.
Some plants above me.
I love the natural flow.
All the green elements.
The big rock features
inside there.
Gives a nice tranquil
peaceful vibe to the unit.
Definitely somewhere
I can see myself
getting a good glass of wine
and finishing my day off.
I think I'm making myself a
bit too comfortable in here.
- Should we leave you to it?
- Oh, you enjoy that.
- Yeah, I'm gonna have a
look some more of the details
in this room, Bryan.
- See you later.
- Thank you.
- And with our judges
passing comment
on our duo's third challenge,
we've officially passed the
halfway mark of the competition.
But who's design held the
key to the judges' praise?
It's time for that verdict.
(intense dance music)
Can you believe it, design duos?
We're officially halfway there.
The judges have viewed
each of your spaces
and it's time to
reveal their feedback.
Let's start with you Team R&K.
That custom art
piece on your wall,
all the judges had to say was,
"Wow."
Congratulations.
They loved your custom
design elements you brought
into the space, like
your bespoke bulkhead
and the way the
lights bounced off it.
However, with so many
different ideas in your space,
they felt like
something was lacking
to just tie it all together.
- I don't know what
these judges want.
I love them, but
what do they want?
- The Perma Peeps, the
judges loved how you
brought all your
natural elements from
your master bathroom
right into your master bedroom.
Your headboard was
also a hit as well,
as the finishes you
chose for your cupboards.
However, they were a
little bit concerned
that your client might bump
their head on that low shelf
above your bed.
- We were a little bit
worried about that shelf.
- But at least everything else
has definitely
impressed the judges,
and yeah, we did our best.
- [Danilo] Team
Contrast Control,
the judges loved your
bespoke art piece
above your master bed.
They also enjoyed how
you brought elements
from your other rooms
into your master bedroom,
like those box
shelves on your wall.
However, with the dark ceiling
and those black cupboards,
did you perhaps make the
room a bit too moody?
- I'll take that criticism.
I'm quite happy with how the
room feels and came across.
- This is just taste, you know?
- With that out the way,
it's time to announce
our winning duo.
This was the toughest
decision our judges
have had to make thus far.
And the winner of the
master bedroom challenge is
(dramatic suspenseful music)
the Perma Peeps.
- Oh my God!
(laughing)
(clapping)
- Finally!
- Yay!
- [Both] Finally!
- We won one challenge.
That's all we wanted.
Just want to win at least.
- As the winners
of this challenge,
you'll receive an extra 5,000
rand added to your budget
to add value to your property.
Congratulations ladies.
- I think that after we've
now won this challenge
we definitely have a
little bit more confidence.
- Oh, keen for the
next challenge.
- We really need
to bring it now.
- Oh, competition is
getting tight, eh?
(clapping)
- The Perma Peeps may
be celebrating their
first challenge win
in the competition,
but with a near
even playing field,
it really is anyone's
game at this point.
Join us again in the next
episode for more design drama

or will it all go up in flames?
- Well, we all about
pushing boundaries, honey.
- Cheers.
- This is insane.
- That is wild.
- [Danilo] Watch all
the design drama unfold
and see who rules supreme
at the end of the day,

- [Announcer] Another
feel good production.
(swooshing)
