- Previously on
"My Design Rules,"

we met our three design
duos for the first time.

Team R & K, Team Contrast
Control, and The Perma Peeps.

After drawing their unique
set of front door keys

from the construction hat,
they got their first look at

the spaces they'll
be working on.

Which duo will reveal themselves

as the front runners in
the first design challenge?

Hello and welcome to episode two

of interior design reality
show, "My Design Rules."

Where over the next 12
episodes we follow the journey

of three design duo teams

as they compete
against one another,

designing and decorating
three empty white-box spaces.

And transforming them
into dream homes,

one challenge at a time.

And to prevent them
from coloring too far
outside the lines,

we've made sure that each
team gets a pretend client,

a magazine editor of a leading
South African decor magazine.

(mellow music)

- I'm Sumien Brink, I'm
the editor, VISI magazine.

We love producing this magazine.

We think it's most beautiful
magazine in South Africa,

because we concentrate
on showcasing the best

in design, decor and
architecture in this country.

Hello?

- Hi.
- Hi, how are you?

I chose team R & K because
I love their energy.

They are full of new ideas.

They're bold and
they are passionate

about decor and all
things beautiful.

I think they are going
to do a fantastic job.

So I am your client,
and I can't wait to see

what you've planned for
this beautiful space.

Just give me a little
bit of an inclination.

- So, we were thinking
we could like, you know,

we want bold and we want daring.

Something that people
have never seen before.

And so, we have low
elements in each room,

and in here we were specifically
thinking about bold tiles.

- We were thinking about
you know strong shapes.

We're thinking about
hexagon shaped tiles

in the kitchen area.

And, of course, using black,

which is very
unconventional thing to do.

But, of course,
these are our ideas.

As a client, what
are your thoughts?

- Oh, I love your ideas, I love
the idea of the hexagonals,

I love the idea of black,
it is very sophisticated,

it's very now, and it will work
fantastically in this space.

(upbeat music)

- My name is Kelebogile,
also known as Lebo,

and my surname is Nondzaba.

And I'm editor of a the
fabulous SA Home Owner magazine.

It's one of the leading
home and decor magazines

in the country.

The type of content that we
create is basically focused

around home decor and design,

showcasing the fabulous houses
that we have in South Africa.

And they've actually
transformed these houses

from just a plain house
to actually a warm home.

And then we basically share
with the rest of the country,

to give them an idea of how
you can actually transform

your space from just an open
space into a beautiful home.

Oh, there you are, hi guys.

- Hello there.

- Hi.
- How you doing?

- Good how are you?
- I'm all right, thank you.

I'm Lebo.

Wow, I love Nick and Kehumile,
I love their personalities.

They stood out for
me, their confidence.

They knew what our
magazine was about.

Even if we just met
for the first time,

we both spoke the same language.

We actually got on
like a house on fire.

So tell me about your
vision for this apartment?

- How we envisioned
this apartment is
seeing it as a space

where someone can work in it

and also be very
calm and cozy in it.

- Yeah, we're really
loving this high ceiling,

and also the concrete
that they did here.

I think we can
really play with the

luxurious aspects of that.

And then also just create
a nice free-flowing space

where people can
also entertain in.

- Wow, and that's
perfect for our reader.

We found that our
readers actually are into

functional spaces, so anything
that allows you to have

seamless move from
one room to another,

that will work perfectly
for our readers

actually are all about.

(upbeat music)

- My name is Debbie Loots,

I'm the editor of
Real Life magazine.

We are quarterly
publication that goes

into the Sunday Times newspaper
to select subscribers.

Hello, hi.
- Hello.

- Hi.
- Hi, I'm Debbie

The reason I chose
Sinead and Melissa,

was because I could
immediately see

that they've got a
wonderful relationship

as very good and old friends.

They get each other, and
I was excited about that.

So, tell me about your
vision for the space.

- At this stage we kind of
thinking along the lines of

permaculture and minimalism,

which are two things we're
both very passionate about.

- Sure, very interesting.

What the duo stand for

is really beautiful,
and simple, and modern.

And as a Magazine, Real Life
is a little bit more out there.

It's a little bit more South
African, it's very colorful,

it is a bit edgy.

So, in a way I'm
challenging them

to come up with something
that's maybe a little bit

out of the box for them.

Good luck girls, well, I
hope you're gonna do well

and please surprise me.

(upbeat music)

- Let's hope all three
of our design duos

get to surprise their
magazine editor clients

in a good way, of course.

The brief for the first
challenge starts right now.

(anticipatory music)

Design contestants,

welcome to your first
challenge on season five.

To kick things off with a bang,

we're gonna be throwing
you right into the deep end

with a double challenge.

- [Team R & K] No!

- We were not expecting that.

It's double the trouble.

- Yeah, but there's two of us.

We can definitely handle that.

- Yep (chuckles).

- You will have to
design and decorate

both spare rooms
for this challenge.

And there's a twist.

You may not make
both of the bedrooms

a spare bedroom.

At least one the rooms needs
to be something creative.

- Sure.

- Two rooms.
- One challenge.

- Raw.
- That's the deep end.

- All right, two rooms.

Meh, well, we can do this.

- I do have a surprise
for you, however,

your entire apartments
will be fitted

with real hardwood flooring.

And that's where we'll begin.

So design contestants get
shopping and good luck.

(contestant hooting)

(mellow music)

- [Nick] Really amazing that
all the teams are getting

hardwood flooring,
really proper stuff.

- There are so many
options to choose from

and just all so gorgeous,

I don't even know where
we're going to begin.

But there's a couple that
are calling our names.

We feeling a few.

- I am really enjoying
that brushed finish,

it really brings out the grain,

and I think when
you see the light

reflecting off those planks,

I think it's really
gonna bring it out.

(playful music)

- We love to shop, furniture
shopping here we come.

- Yes.

- [Rekopile] The key item that
we're looking for is a bed.

- Oh.
- This is our bed.

- That's perfect, dude.
- This is our bed.

- Yes.

- The boys picked the same bed.

- Unbelievable.

I can't believe it.

- You don't really have to
use the headboard either.

- That, that's--
- Oh.

- Oh my God this is it.
- It is.

- Oh no.

- Oh, I love it, I love
how mattress feels.

- Those girls, the sass.

(Kehumile chuckling)

- This is ours.

- We've already
ordered this bed.

- No, come on
guys, be gentlemen,

we chose this first, you guys.

- They just tried
to take our bed.

- From under us.

- Whatever, the stores
got many options,

so we'll find something better.

- Bye.
- It was insane.

But we nailed it down.

- We'll find another.

(playful music)

- How perfect are
these for our space?

- Amazing.

- We're gonna get our
jungle-o vibe on hard

and just clear them out.
- Completely.

- We have found the bed.

Yeah, the boys, they
can keep that one.

We found the perfect one, right?

- True.

(upbeat music)

- Amazing already.
- Oh my word.

- [Koketso] Oh, yes, this was
a very brave and bold choice.

- [Rekopile] It is strong.

- [Koketso] I mean, if
we just take the time

to actually admire this
tile, it is gorgeous.

- And I think it's fresh,
it's very crisp, its unusual.

- And I mean, no one's
gonna go for this.

- [Rekopile] It was a
great decision, actually.

- Giving them something a bit
more difficult to work with,

We want shapes, you
know tile shapes.

And, of course, the wood that's
carved around those tiles.

And we just hope that
they can execute,

but they did promise that
they can deliver, right?

- Yes, they did.
- Okay

(upbeat music)

- [Kehumile] We really wanted
to bring in a natural element

to our bedroom.

And I think we've just
found the perfect pieces.

- Getting those poles on
that car is a mission.

We are saving a
lot of money though

by just using our own transport.

- [Kehumile] We had the rack.

- Exactly (laughs).

- Might as well strap to it.
- Use it.

(upbeat music)

- Whatever the guys are up to,

I'm sure they're hoping it'll
put them in pole position.

After the break, the design duos

get to meet their first mentor,

who will also act as guest
judge in the first challenge.

(upbeat music)

(upbeat music)

Welcome back to
"My Design Rules."

For each challenge,
our design duos

are designated a mentor, who
will not only offer advice

and guidance as
they work to create

a beautifully designed
space, but will also act

as a guest judge for the round.

For the spare room challenge,
we've called in someone

who knows the pressures of
this competition all too well.

Design winner of season three.

(mellow music)

- I'm Rudolph Jordaan,
I'm an interior designer.

And I have established my
own company, Apax Design.

I used to be a lecturer
at Inscape Education
Group and CPUT.

I've been involved in
retail, commercial,

and hospitality design projects.

And it's that
variety of projects

that continues to fuel my
passion for interior design.

Being a design contestant
in season three,

showed me the importance
of your network,

because you're working
with tight deadlines here

and you need to make
the best of this project

in the shortest period of time.

I certainly have empathy
for the design contestants,

I mean I was there myself.

But I really want the
quality and workmanship

to reflect in all
their projects.

- Hey, Perma peeps.

- Hey, Rudolph, how's it going?

I'm Melissa.
- I'm Sinead.

- We know who you are,
welcome to our space.

- I would like to
know what you're doing

for your first challenge,
because I'm here to mentor you.

- Awesome.

- Why don't you show me around?

- Let's go take a look.

I've actually followed
him for quite awhile

and I do know him as a designer.

So, I'm actually quite excited

to have his input and
get some of his feedback.

- You have two rooms
for this challenge,

and one has to be a
bedroom and the other not.

- This is going to be the
bedroom and the other room

is going to be our
multi-functional
activities room.

We're focusing a
lot on minimalism

and permaculture principles.

So, we have designed the space
to have a very minimalistic

built-in steel open storage.

And we've got a beautiful
steel custom-made bed base,

that's coming into the space.

- An activities room sounds
very interesting next door.

What do you have planned there?

- We're very excited
about our activities room,

it's going to be a
multifunctional space.

And we have designed it

so that there's a whole lot
of storage along the one wall,

floor to ceiling storage.

With a sneaky hidden
built-in murphy bed.

Which, we like to call
our Murphy's Law bed.

Just in the hope

that nothing actually
goes wrong, Murphy's law.

- And it just gets installed
correctly and works.

- So, we're going to be
cladding the underside

of that hidden bed with mirror.

So, that when everything's
folded up, it actually becomes

a lovely yoga room,
or a gym room.

- I like what Melissa
and Sinead have designed

for the multifunctional room.

Their planning seems on point,

but it's not
installation-day yet.

And it all might still unravel.

- R & K!

- Hi.
- Hello.

- It's Rudolph, he's
won this before,

he knows exactly what it's
like to be in our shoes.

- Well, this is
definitely a game-changer.

- Of course it is.
- Thank you.

- [Koketso] That's what
we were hoping for.

- [Rekopile] Exactly.

- I love it when
designers can take a risk.

So, show me what you have
planned for the rooms.

- Oh, definitely we've got a
couple of things to show you.

- He liked all the
choices we made

and we hope he
continues liking them.

This one is our guest bedroom,

simply because of the window.

I think lots of
light, excellent.

We're using the hexagon shape

sort of framed with four
flowers in the guest bedroom.

Simply because we want to
continue with our theme

with hexagon shapes, I mean
from our kitchen floor.

It's very bold and so we
wanted to carry that through.

It is a language, it's playful,

this is a very
sophisticated client,

but also she's
got a bit of play.

- In the spare bedroom, we had
to decide between a yoga room

and a glam room.

And we thought, "Which one
is gonna be more favorable?

So, we decided to go with a?

- [Team R & K] Glam room.

- So we thought black, white,
a little bit of Chanel.

- Literally, I was like Coco
Chanel, as she was speaking,

she was coming in my head.

So yeah, it's a glam
room, as we said,

I mean we don't
have to say much,

you know what glam room's about.

They're about glamor.

- The key features
of a glam room

have to be the lighting
and the storage.

What did you plan there?

- Rudolph reminded us of
lighting, in the glam room.

- And we did think about
that, but we can put more.

Make it bright.
- Shining.

- I really loved meeting R & K,

they are such a dynamic team.

And I really think
they will bring

something quite unexpected
to this development.

I do however feel that they
need to plan the glam room

a little bit better.

The detailing
around the lighting

and especially the cabinetry
needs to be done well.

(mellow music)

- Surprise, surprise.

- Greetings.

- Hi, how are doing you?

- Very well and yourself?
- It's crazy.

- Super excited that
the mentor is Rudi.

- Yeah, he is.

- Our ex-lecturer.
- Caught us by surprise.

- Interestingly enough, I
lectured Nick and Kehumile

at Inscape Education Group,
a couple of years ago.

So I won't be cutting
them any slack,

because I know what
they are capable of.

- We've really considered
every surface of the space.

And then paid quite
a lot of attention

to the smaller details, as well.

- Let's talk about the flooring.

- On the floor will be
carpet and we'll be wrapping

the carpet up, as skirting.

It's gonna look very luxurious.

And, on the ceiling
is our DIY project,

which will be timber slats
being hung from the ceiling.

And we're very keen to
see how that works out,

'cause we'll be
doing that ourselves.

You'll be quite impressed
with our headboard design

that we'll be putting
on this wall over here.

- We've done that
in a camo-green.

And it wraps around
these walls, and kind of,

it really holds the bed.

So we're really excited
to see how that feels.

- But wait, have you considered

the plugs behind the headboard?

- So we actually had,
in-slots in the headboard

where people can
access the plug points.

So we've thought about that too.

- Good, okay, I
like that thinking.

- Nextdoor, we've
gone with a study.

It's a bit of a reading
nook, bit of a private space.

It's somewhere where
you can kinda get away

and get a bit of personal space.

- And we'll have some book
shelving with steel sheeting,

which is gonna be very
laser cut with triangles,

the shadows are gonna
be very beautiful.

So, we're very keen to see

how that's gonna
work all together.

- Well guys, it sounds
very, very exciting.

But my only criticism would
be that I think you might be

using too many materials here.

You have timber slats, you
have melamine, you have steel,

you have carpet,
you have upholstery.

So just be cautious of how
you're going to use it.

And make sure that you can

carry that through
the entire unit.

- It is a lot of materials

and it is gonna be a challenge.

- But we foresaw this,
so we gonna kill it.

- I know Nick and Kehumile
and what they're capable of.

So, I'm pretty sure they
will pull this one off.

But they must just be cautious

about how they use
all the materials.

- It's always good to get
guidance from somebody

who's been through what
you're going through.

And our design duos, I'm sure,
are grateful for the advice.

After the break,
things truly get going.

(upbeat music)

(upbeat music)

- To create truly designer
spaces, the duos must consider

bespoke pieces and
collaborate with South African

designers to take their
rooms to the next level.

(upbeat music)

- For our glam room
we are collaborating
with Donna Solovey.

I found her on Instagram and
I think she's impeccable.

Her work, amazing.

- [Rekopile] So we
commissioned her to paint

a pair of red bottoms.

We've come to see
what she's up to,

and if she's done
the right things.

- Here it is.

- Oh my, it looks so beautiful.

- There is still
another layer to paint.

Over this side.
- Okay.

- And then I'm really
glad that you guys came,

because I wanted to ask
about the shadow here.

I was thinking a bit
of pink and purple

but then I changed my mind.

- Good thing you
changed your mind,

because pink will not work
in the space (laughs).

But I was thinking more
black, gray and white?

That should work,
it's more chic?

- Yeah.
- And it fits in the space.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

- And then it should be done.

And where's it gonna go?

- [Team R & K]
Oh, the glam room.

(Team R & K laughing)

- We are creating a space
where we want somebody to just

walk in and immediately
feel feminine and empowered.

And I think red bottom shoes
are the statement thing.

Coco Chanel?

(all laughing)

- We're visiting our
collaborator, Oliver Sherwell,

just to discuss, some
details with our headboard.

- Your fabric
arrived this morning.

- Amazing.
- That looks great.

Yo, that texture's really nice.

- From a construction
perspective,

the guys are gonna do it
in three separate sections.

- This'll just make it

logistically a little
bit easier, as well.

One thing I just wanted
to chat about was the,

just the plug points.

- The plug points actually
would be positioned

on each end of the wall.

Just on the back wall of it.

And its gonna be
positioned above

the square tin that we have.

So we just wanted to kind
of have the plug point

onto the headboard and not
really against the wall itself.

So it's going to look like
its part of the headboard.

- Yeah, I mean we can just
cut the appropriate holes

and then when we actually
fix it to the wall,

we can bring along the
actually plug faces

and just put those on.

So, just make sure
it's nice and neat.

- Oliver looks like he is in
the same brain wave as us.

- And that fabric, if a
color had a flavor, oof.

- It would be that delicious.

(techno music)

- We have our Murphy's Law
bed unit being manufactured.

And a couple of other things.

It's gonna be very cool.

So where are we at
with all of this?

- Gonna finish
sanding up the base.

And then we can put a
little bit of the oil on it.

We've already done a beautiful
job of oiling all the panels.

And, yeah, all the doors and
everything have been done

in a very nice ash wood veneer.

And then once this
bed closes up,

we're gonna put a
nice, big mirror on it.

It's gonna be a beautiful,
hidden thing, yeah.

- Should we give this
Murphy's Law bed mechanism

a test, to see if
it actually works?

- I'm ready to try.

- Yeah, lets give this a go.

- So, just lift it up slowly.

- Okay, so far so good.

(wood creaking)

- Cherio.
- Cherio.

(women laughing)

- Awesome.
- It's like stunning, eh?

And then the mirror!
- I'm so excited.

We are doing some
awesome welding work.

And we are making a custom
bed base out of steel.

That has been inspired
by the building's facade

and the staggered pillars.

- And we're also doing a
steel frame macrame headboard,

which will be done by ourselves

because we are both
skilled in macrame.

- How long you think it's
gonna take us to finish this?

- I think it's gonna
take us long enough,

so we should probably get going.

- Half-half?
- Lets go, lets do this.

- There's nothing quite
like getting in there

and just getting
your hands dirty.

(women chuckling)

- By getting their hands
dirty, the duos are approaching

the halfway mark of
the first challenge.

So, I decided to pop in and
see how things were going.

(upbeat music)

- Hello, Perma Peeps.

Guys, halfway through
the first challenge,

it's a double challenge.

This is looking pretty
impressive, I won't lie.

I do find this aesthetic
quite interesting.

The sort of white wooden-covered
doors against the brown.

Is that intentional,
is that gonna change?

- This is actually going
to be a Murphy's bed,

- What?
- That folds up.

So, if you have guests

and you need to
accommodate extra people,

you fold out a full double bed.

This isn't its final finish,

we still have a reflective
material coming on here.

So when you're not
using it as a bed,

and your using the space
for your activities,

your yoga or pilates, whatever.

It's kind of nice
to sort of watch

what you're doing
while your doing.

- [Host] Is it operational?

- Yes.
- Please can we open it up?

- Yes.
- I wanna see this thing.

I've never seen one of these
things in real life before.

Don't break anything
on its way down.

- Yeah, it comes out.

- Guys congratulations,
this is such a cool feature.

The judges are
going to love this.

- Thanks yeah, This isn't the
only thing that folds out,

but we'll save that for
a surprise for later.

- This is really awesome guys.

Melissa, what's
happening next door?

I see there's an
unfinished headboard there.

How's it going there?

- Our stress factor,
at the moment,

is we've got a hand-woven
macrame headboard

that we're busy working on.

And it's a lot of knots to tie

and it's a little
harsh on the fingers.

But we pushing, we're
pushing through.

And it's gonna be so
beautiful when it's in place.

- Well good luck to you
both, lots still to be done.

And the real question now is,

will you finish or knot?

(all chuckling)

(upbeat music)

- We are at the
halfway mark right now.

- Yeah, I guess you always
wanna be further along

than what you are, but I
think we're getting there.

- Yeah, a lot is
happening, though.

But we are quite further
than what we had expected.

- What is going on here?

All these poles.

- This is our DIY project,
but it's about midway.

We got the other piece that
we were halfway through,

and then we had to stop

so the carpeting
guys could get going.

- The thing that's
worrying us the most,

I think is very ambitious
weight of our DIY project.

So, we're busy chatting
to the engineers

and seeing if we are able
to hang it to the roof.

- So, in someways it's like
a thing that's above you

to keep nightmares off?

- Catching the dreams.

- Bringing the
natural elements in.

- Have you had a peek
across at the other homes?

Is there anyone you feel
threatened by at this stage?

- We're not interested
in what they're doing?

- I honestly don't care.

We haven't seen anything.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Own pace, own race.

(upbeat music)

- The mirror is about to arrive.

And we've got nothing
concrete to show him.

Except men, lots of
men, installing our
cupboards right now.

- Hey, the glam girls.

How's it going, Team R & K?

- Hello, hi.

- This looks amazing.

- Well, we are trying
to keep calm (laughs).

But inside we are panicking.

- Well, unpack that for us.

What are the stresses?

- The cupboard's not complete,
our chandelier's not in.

But the track light is in,
so we sorted on that one.

- And then there are things
we can't tell you yet,

because they're surprises
but they're not here yet.

- Well, surprises scare me.

Does that mean it's just not
going to arrive surprise,

or something exciting surprise?

- No, no, no.
- Both.

- They're going to arrive.

- They will be.
- Stay optimistic.

We have to win this challenge.

I mean, if you start
right, you end right?

- Yes.

(women laughing)

- Well, our design duos
are in for a big surprise

come deadline-day, if
they don't get a move on.

Deadlines are deadlines
and rules are rules.

Who will be crowned the
winners of the first challenge?

Or will any of our design
duos even be done on time?

To find out, tune in for
more of "My Design Rules."

Next time on "My Design
Rules," the design contestants

rush to complete the rooms
of their first challenge.

- I would rather concede.
- Things are not looking good.

- [Koketso] We're not
gonna have it today.

- [Kehumile] We don't
really know what's going on.

- "The Amazing Race,"
painters edition.

- [Host] Will they make it
in time, before the deadline?

(air horn honking)

And, what will the judges
think of their efforts?

- This suite is a bit
much for me, sure.

- [Host] Tune in for all
the design inspiration,

and all the deadline
chaos, on the next episode
