[Danilo]- It all
comes down to this.
Tonight in the My
Design Rules Studio
our judges reveal
the overall winners
who will receive a one
hundred thousand rand
cash prize.
First, the design viewer who
earned the most viewer votes
walks away with an additional
twenty thousand rand.
Welcome to the rand finale of
My Design Rules Season five.
My name is Danilo Acquisto and
I cannot believe the moment
is finally here.
With us in studio are
three amazing design duos,
they have been through it all
over the past thirteen weeks
and today we unlock the door
to a bright future for one duo
who will receive not only the
accolade of being acknowledged
as the best new design
talent in South Africa,
but also a check for
one-hundred thousand rand
as the judge's choice.
But, that's not all.
Our South African votes on
our website have been counted,
and the design duo who captured
the hearts of the public
will win a further
twenty-thousand rand
as the viewer's choice.
So we could have
two winners today
or one design duo might
even walk away with the full
one hundred and
twenty thousand rand.
Now it's been a competition,
but, it's also been wonderful
to see the relationships that
have formed along the way.
And now that the challenges
are done, the duos
have had a chance to relax and
think back on their journey.
(Upbeat music)
- [Nicholas] We are currently
just on the road from sights
kicking back, having a
couple glasses of wine
with our teammates.
- [Kehumile] Witnessing Sabrage
which is a chop and
pop of the wine bottle.
And yeah, yo, its
about to be amazing.
(upbeat music)
(Bottle popping)
- The pressure is
not there anymore
and we're feeling really great.
I mean, we actually get time
to relax, and actually
gather our thoughts.
- [Sinead] It's great to be
hanging out with the design duos
I mean obviously we've
been so busy over
the last couple of weeks
that we haven't had much time
to actually get to
know each other.
So here we are drinking
wine having a fabulous time,
it's awesome.
- Living our best lives!
- For us I think,
high moments each time
was just seeing
spaces come together.
We had a lot of fun with
the first two challenges.
Yeah, all of the
collaborators throughout were
very fun to work with.
- Contrast control--
holy moly, guys!
This looks like chaos.
- [Nicholas] Throughout
any project like this
there's always
challenging moments.
Your installation
moments are always tough.
There's almost no
going back each time.
Um, I think one of those
big challenge was getting
that big hammock structure up
and against the wall
aligning all those bolts up.
That was a big surface area.
- [Kehumile] Yo.
- [Nicholas] The
hanging garden that was
definitely a stress for us.
Um, getting that mechanism
up, having it fail,
having to rework it.
- [Kehumile] The door's
not opening 'cause of the
post structure.
It was definitely
like one of those.
- [Nicholas] Yeah, that caught
us in the first challenge,
for sure.
- [Kehumile] Yeah.
- Just, kind of in
hindsight, like,
you're so thankful to have been
part of this process, like.
- [Kehumile] It's
been a true blessing.
Everyone wants this
shot, you know,
and, like, for us to like
get this has been insane.
- [Nicholas] It's like as an
artist to get a residency.
It's like you get a canvas
and you get all the
paint you'll need
and you get to smash
and like that was..
what an experience
to have a bold
project behind us,
like thorough all of this.
It's really, really
something-- something special.
- It's like a portfolio
with a little um,
cherry on top.
- It's time to announce who
won the kitchen challenge.
Our winning duo is...
Team R&K!
(cheers)
- I would say like
our highest moment
has to be the kitchen.
- [Reketso] Yeah.
- [Koketso] When we
first conceptualized the
whole idea of the kitchen
it was just a mere thought.
And, actually seeing
the thing get like,
everything come together.
- To see our own little balcade
that was our highest moment!
Like, dude! This! We chose this!
We decided on this
and it's happening!
- When in the lounge --
- When in the lounge
you're, I mean --
- That was like ultimate, like,
okay we've done it!
- The heavens are just
dropping blessings and
we're just like, receiving.
- Yes, we've achieved
what we wanted.
- So grateful! So grateful!
The master bedroom was one of--
- [Koketso] Was our biggest low.
- [Rekopile] Was one
of our lowest because
we worked so hard to
ensure that it's different
that it's like very distinct.
I mean we had our feature
wall, we used blue.
That was us going bold! Color!
They've been saying we
don't use much color
we are clinical!
Then we had a whole like skull!
A skull that was painted!
And then we had, let's not
even talk about the mural.
Let's just have a moment
of silence for that.
A massive huge piece of art
and then we don't
win that challenge.
It was a lot, but
it was beautiful.
- [Koketso] But
it was beautiful!
- [Reketso] You cannot deny.
I'm gonna miss this.
Um, we're probably
gonna continue
'cause I can't
function without her.
- [Koketso] Yeah, definitely.
Like, one without the
other doesn't make sense.
- [Rekopile] It doesn't work.
Um, so it's been amazing.
We're definitely going
to miss our synergy
and we like built a rhythm.
(glasses clinking)
- Woohoo!
- Well, we feel amazing,
but also a little heart sore.
- Yeah, we're gonna
miss everyone a lot.
- And the winner of the
master bedroom challenge is...
The Perma Peeps!
(cheers)
- Oh, my God!
- Winning the master bedroom!
- [Melissa] Our best
experience on this show was
obviously our
master bedroom win.
Finally!
- Yay!
- [Both] FINALLY!
- [Melissa] Yeah, we were
so proud of that outcome
and that win and we
definitely needed it
for our confidence levels.
And, yeah, that was
definitely our highest points
in the show - getting
that win in the bag.
- [Sinead] Yeah.
I think the lowest point for
us is definitely our losses.
- [Melissa] All the losses.
- All of them, all five!
- So many of them!
- [Melissa] But we
were super proud of our
master bed win, so at
least we got one win but --
- [Sinead] We've done well,
we've gotten great feedback,
and we're proud, and we've
grown, and it's amazing.
- We took a lot out
of this competition.
- Yeah, we did. There
was a lot of growth
for both of us as human beings.
- [Melissa] As
individuals, as friends,
as business partners,
as designers.
Just growth and learning
and just experiences,
and the networking and the
people we've managed to meet.
We are just... --
- So thankful for everything.
- Yeah.
- It's been amazing.
- The excitement is
bubbling over here in studio
because today we
crown the design duo
that the judges feel
are South Africa's
next big name in
interior design!
After the break we catch
up with contestant teams
to see how they're feeling.
(upbeat music)
- Welcome back to
the grand finale!
What an exciting journey
it has been thus far
and we're very excited
to have all our
design duos with us in studio.
It's been thirteen
weeks of late nights,
stressful deadlines,
and of course,
world class cutting edge design.
But here we are at the
final stretch and we're
joined by our three design duos
Team R&K, Team
Contrast Control, and
The Perma Peeps.
- Guys! Can you believe
it? We are officially here!
And I just want to quickly
catch up with all three of you.
Perma Peeps, I'll
start with you.
And this journey has been
insane for both of you
guys, what have been
the big learnings?
- For us I think the biggest
learning that we've gone
through is we've
grown as individuals,
as designers, and
as best friends.
- [Melissa] Yeah, I know.
I mean you know this experience
we've really found our niche and
our specific design language
so we're very excited
to be able to develop
our own design language now.
And we had such a great time.
- [Danilo] Love it.
And the viewers obviously
at home are wanting to know
I mean I've got to
go through finales
a couple of times and
this is the first time
you guys are standing
in this position.
How are you feeling,
Contrast Control?
- The last four months has
all led up to this moment.
So, it's really stressful
for us to kind of be here
and kind of engaging again
with everyone and just
absorb it all.
- Yeah.
- [Kehumile] And I
think we've like really
achieved what we really
wanted to achieve, like,
in this whole
competition and, like,
it's just amazing to
see that white box
turn into, like, a dream.
- [Danilo] Yeah, you
left it all out there so
whatever happens - happens now.
You guys gave it your all.
And finally Team R&K,
your words and thoughts to
your friends who you guys
have made on this journey
thus far, what are your
feelings at this stage?
- We have a family.
We're a tribe.
The six of us have gone
through this journey together.
And it couldn't
have been better.
It couldn't have been
any other people rather
in the country. And I mean
it's just been so amazing.
We've learned so
much from Perma Peeps
in terms of like, you know,
using greenery and plants.
I mean you guys have
really like changed
our idea of design.
It has to be inclusive
with nature and so forth.
With the boys they're
so bold, so brave.
I mean their use of
color, the contrast,
I mean, they stood so
true to their name.
Such amazing people.
It's been great.
- Yeah. And I just really
want to say well done, guys.
We've come a really long way
and let's just go
out there a conquer.
- [Danilo] Nice! Aw,
guys, I love that.
Does that mean you guys are all
gonna share the money, right?
- [Collectively] No!
(Laughter)
- [Danilo] Oh, oh oh! So
it is a competition still?
All right!
They weren't alone
out there on site.
Apart from me nagging them
all the time on deadline day,
throughout the competition
they received support
and guidance from industry
mentors and judges.
(upbeat music)
- For each challenge
the design duos will
allocate to their mentor
who doubled up as a
guest judge for the round.
First up, in the double
spare room challenge
the duos were guided by a
man who knows the challenge
all too well.
Season three design
winner Rudolph Jordaan.
For the bathroom
challenge mentorship was
given by a respected
interior designer
Karen Mosdun.
Known for her bold use of
color and quirky style,
interior designer Sara
Ode gave input for the
master bedroom challenge.
With a wealth of
experience to share
renowned architect and
Director of ARRCC Interiors
Mark Rielly guided
the kitchen challenge.
And to wrap things up in
the lounge and balcony
challenge, acclaimed
interior designer
Kyle Roo brought his
expertise to the table.
In the final judging
the three main judges
were joined by a legend.
Design winner of season one
and judge in season four
Donald Nxumalo.
- I'm looking for people who are
hungry for this opportunity.
Because I understand what that
opportunity has done for me.
I know I'm only judging
for one episode,
but I'm telling you,
this is going to be a tough one.
- [Danilo] But the anchors
of the panel were the
main judges.
Brian Courtney of
Private Property.
Slay Brooks of
Bulwark Properties.
And Buhle Mathole of
Kabu Design Architects.
What an amazing journey
we've had thus far
and a huge thank you to all
of our judges and our mentors.
We are joined now
by our main judges
Brian Courtney
and Buhle Mathole.
And unfortunately we
are one short tonight
as Slay Brooks is at
home with his wife
who gave birth to
their son yesterday.
They deserve of a round
of applause for that.
(applause)
And on top of that give
them a huge congratulations
to the entire Brooks family
and we wish them all
the best during this
exciting new chapter in lives.
Judges, it's so good to have
you both with us tonight.
Buhule you start for a bit.
This season has been
the best in terms of
design we've had thus far.
What have been your feelings?
- I think it's really
been phenomenal.
Uh, the duos have
done very well.
And I think they
said it themselves,
I've seen the growth
and I have seen how they
synergize into one another.
Um, and I think
in terms of design
they've all grown,
they've learned.
They've learned how
to conceptualize ideas
and actually bring
them to fruition.
So it's been an awesome,
awesome journey.
- You're being the kind
of person I'd love to have
over at my house
because I've seen also
there's some spice in you.
- Uh-huh.
- Brian, its the first
time you've been a judge
in this position and
everything just must have been
an exciting journey
of sensory overload.
- [Brian] Absolutely,
it was fantastic.
I've had some design
backgrounds and to see what
you guys have achieved
has been phenomenal.
I think seeing young people
come in and really just
grow more than we
could've imagined
has been absolutely crazy.
Also, just the energy. The
energy that the three of you
as the three teams bring has
been exciting to be apart of.
So well done.
- It's awesome.
This show gets to reveal
and showcase the best
African designer has to offer.
And it comes from
designers like you guys
that bring that to the floor.
So, judges, thank you
so much for joining us
here today.
I'm excited to
announce our winners
and thank you for your service.
It's time now to get our
judges final comments
on each of the completed homes.
So lets begin with Team R&K.
- In all honesty, what we
have managed to achieve
here in two words is
ultimate sophistication.
Of course without forgetting
practicality and function.
- Well the client that
we designed for is
someone who I really see
as a well traveled person.
She loves cuisine,
she loves gourmet.
She would definitely enjoy
entertaining her guests here.
- Yeah, there was a
lot of thought process
and I just think I
love the floor from the
kitchen to the lounge.
It's seamless and that's
what we wanted to achieve.
- Judges, you've had the chance
to stay in those apartments.
We're dying for
your final opinions.
Buhle, we'll start with you.
- Yes I stayed in your
unit it was awesome.
In one word I have
I think is growth
for Team R&K.
I've really seen how they
started and struggled.
I remember the bathroom
challenge was like,
'AHH what are we doing?!'
and the end was
really phenomenal.
So, well done.
And I was super
chic. So, well done.
- [Danilo] Love it!
- [ Team R&K] Thank you.
- [Danilo] Brian.
- Ladies I think
you are glamorous
and that shows in your design.
The way you've grown
from your glamor room
in the spare bedroom.
Right through to how you
won the kitchen challenge
which was absolutely
mind blowing.
We were very impressed.
And we loved how you
listened to the advice
that was given.
You took on the
mentors' suggestions.
You listened to the judges.
Um, and we've see
incredible growth.
So, well done, well done.
- [Danilo] Absolutely.
Great advice and
opinions from the judges.
I'm just sad that
the mannequin's gone.
- Oh Gracie, Gracie!
- [Danilo] May
Grace rest in piece,
ladies and gentlemen!
(laughter)
It's time now to move
onto our next team,
Team Contrast Control.
(intense music)
- What we tried to do
with this whole space is
pushing the boundaries
as much as we can
with such a compact space.
And being Contrast
Control we tried to
mash up a lot of
heritages and a lot of
color and finishes,
and a lot of textures
just to put them together
and see how that all
works out.
- [Nicholas] We set out to
challenge the boundaries
and push different
elements that shouldn't
generally work together that we
kind of forcing them to.
- [Kehumile] And we
just wanted to make the
whole space very
text book but also
keeping it local, you know?
- [Danilo] The men
of season five.
We'll start back with
our judges, again.
Brian lets start
with you this time.
- Absolutely, I had the
privilege of staying
in your apartment
so that was amazing.
I think,
from the Private
Property point of view,
what brings value to a home are
kitchens and bathrooms.
And you guys blew the
lid of your bathrooms.
I think we were blown
away with the colors
you used and the bravery
in your approach.
And you were true to your
name Contrast Control
with incredible, interesting
colors the way you
brought it's and your own
opinions brought together
to make an incredible
combination.
So, yeah we really enjoyed
seeing what you were
gonna do each week.
- [Danilo] Stunning. Buhle.
- Fun! It clicked,
it was awesome.
Every week it was almost like,
'what is Contrast Control
going to do this week?!',
you know?
And I think as designers
we got to keep that going.
You know? We got to always
surprise our clients,
we gotta be true to ourselves.
And well done for being
true to yourselves!
- [Danilo] Indeed!
Congratulations to both of you.
Amazing design.
All right, that leaves us
with only one more team.
Its Team Perma Peeps.
(upbeat music)
- With this apartment
we put in a lot of
consideration into
incorporating different things
that are needed within
everyday functioning lives.
So we needed to focus
on functionality,
minimalism, permaculture.
- [Sinead] It's all about
bringing the outside in.
As well, having a
natural feel, warmth.
It's a space that
you want to be in.
A serene haven that
you want to come and
escape to from your daily
life like work, etcetera.
- [Melissa] Yeah, and
a space where people
really can feel
good, can entertain,
can have lots of family
and friends over.
And it's just a real
feel good space.
- Bringing the outdoors indoors.
Judges, your thoughts
for the Perma Peeps.
Let's start with you, Buhle.
- It was green! It was
awesome, I love that.
And I think also like, um,
I said to the other team,
you really stayed
true to what you were.
And I love the functionality
of your units, you know?
Everything, I could see
people living there and
doing things.
The extra bedroom, you
know, somebody staying over.
So well done!
- [Danilo] Brian.
- I think you created a haven.
A real tranquil environment.
Obviously using a
lot of plants and
staying true to your
beliefs around ecosystems
and creating a sustainable
environment was beautiful.
But, that master bedroom
was a masterpiece
and that's what I
remember about you guys.
- [Danilo] Mhm,
congratulations Perma Peeps.
All that's left is for us to
announce the final judgment.
The design duo who
won the judges choice
is...
(Suspenseful music plays)
sitting in this room somewhere,
we'll announce them
after the break.
(laughter)
(upbeat music)
Its the moment our
design duos have been
waiting and working for.
Throughout the series
viewers have been
voting for their
favorite design duo.
And its time to reveal
which duo came out
on tops as the viewers choice.
In total, this season the
viewers voted more than
five hundred thousand times.
And joining me to reveal
the viewers choice winner
is head of marketing
at Capitec Banks
Sbusiso Kumalo.
Please, welcome to
the stage, Sbusiso.
Right, are you nervous?
- Nope (laughs)
- At all?
He gets to give away money.
This man's excited! Alright.
- I'm the money man!
- When I say so
will you just please
reveal that winner.
But before I give you
that privilege would you
like to just say a few
words to our design duos?
Yeah, I just think well done.
I think you put
in a lot of work.
We all respect the
judge's opinions but
we know the real
judges are the viewers.
So this is the one that counts.
- Indeed!
On your time, my friend.
- And the winner for the
viewer's choice is...
(laughter)
- Don't do this to us!
- [Sbusiso] Team Contrast!
(cheers and applause)
- Thank you, man.
- [Danilo]
Congratulations, you guys.
Take your time over
here for me so we could
all be able to see that.
How are you guys feeling
at this particular
stage of the game?
- Warm, warm. Very warm.
(laughs)
- Warmer than you --
- Thankful.
- [Danilo] Throughout
the competition
Team Contrast Control
designed their apartment
with a client in mind.
The readers of SA Homeowner.
One of South Africa's
leading luxury
home and decor
magazines represented by
editor Kelebogile Nondzaba.
- You guys definitely
deserve it.
Well done and
congratulations. We made it!
(applause and laughter)
- [Danilo] Magazine clients
happy, viewers happy,
and so are our duos!
Amazing stuff.
It's time to quickly
have a look at the
voting results.
Let's take a look
at those on screen.
As you will see Team
Contrast control
owned forty percent of
viewer votes of those
five hundred thousand
votes that came through.
Team R&K obtaining thirty-five
percent of those votes
and then the Perma
Peeps coming in third
with twenty-five
percent of those
five hundred thousand votes.
A big congratulations
to Team Contrast Control
our first winners today.
It's now time for the
big one ladies and gents.
It's time to crown
the design winners of
season five as chosen
by our judging panel.
Along with the bragging
rights this duo
will also go home
with the cash prize of
one hundred thousand rand.
Here to do the honors is
one of the main judges
and also the chief
marketing officer of
Private Property Brian Courtney.
You had a tough job, my friend.
- It has been, it has been.
- Final words to our duos
before you reveal a winner.
- It was a hell
of a deliberation.
We sat for a long
time and had many
conversations. Ended up
with conference calls
because we couldn't
make decisions in the
board room. It was stressful.
And I'm privileged to
speak on behalf of the
three judges. And
privileged to have worked
with some amazing
guest judges who really
understand the design industry.
So you guys know that
we've thought this through.
This is tough because
the reality is that
of course, you all deserve this.
And it's so hard
to split decisions.
And we've had to
have split ears.
I mean each of you have
won different challenges
from kitchens to bedrooms
to bathrooms, um,
but we had to make a
decision on overall concepts,
and overall execution,
and the first impression
when you walk in a home
and look through it and
want to stay there.
So, without further
adieu, the grand winner
and something that will help
you launch your careers.
I'm very proud and very
impressed to announce
the team that we felt
has grown the most
in the competition
Team R&K!
(applause)
- Congratulations!
Well done, well done!
(inaudible)
- [Danilo] Such humble
spirits Team R&K!
Team R&K set out to
impress their client
VISI Magazine.
Under the keen eye of
renowned editor Sumien Brink.
Who checked in with them
throughout the course
of the competition to
ensure the duos designs
lived up to the
standard of the readers.
- [Danilo] Sumien! How
are you feeling about
your duos being the
winners of judges' choice?
- I can't believe it, girls,
girls, girls you are fabulous!
- Who runs the
world! GIRLS! WOOO!
(inaudible)
- [Danilo] Come on!
- Amazing, so grateful
to God. So grateful,
He's been with us
through the journey.
- So grateful.
- [Danilo] I cannot
wait to see the results
of what its going to
do for your careers.
Congratulations to
the both of you!
- Thank you. Thank
you to the judges.
- Amazing thank you so much
for turning that around
for us and for
revealing these winners.
It was a really tough
decision as you could hear.
We're joined now by
a very special guest.
So you guys can go ahead
and take your seats
in the mean time.
And I really appreciate
your time here today.
And our special
guest is from the
SABC he's GM for
channels at the SABC
David Makubyane to
congratulate all of our duos.
So David you make your
way to me over here.
Share a thought with our duos!
- Oh, congratulations, guys.
Well done to the
winners, congratulations.
I think that one the things
that I just want to say
is that we are very
honored as SABC
to obviously to have worked
this journey with this show.
Five years but also
this particular season
that was filled with
of high quality,
great innovative designs.
So congratulations, guys.
Well done.
Because of the standard
and the high quality
in this particular
season nobody is gonna
go home empty handed.
(cheers)
- Yeah, so the team
that didn't win,
Perma Peeps ten thousand rand.
(cheering)
(inaudible)
- [Danilo] Oh, man!
Thank you so much
for that announcement.
And for that extra prize
added to the Perma Peeps.
You guys all did an amazing job.
Please, give them another
round of applause,
ladies and gentlemen.
(applause)
And there you have it!
Our grand prize winners.
This competition has
opened the door to a bright
future for all of our
contestants but in particular
for Rekopile and
Koketso who have proved
they have what it
takes to rule supreme
on My Design Rules!
(applause)
(upbeat xylophone plays)
---
(upbeat music)
[Danilo]- It all
comes down to this.
Tonight in the My
Design Rules Studio
our judges reveal
the overall winners
who will receive a one
hundred thousand rand
cash prize.
First, the design viewer who
earned the most viewer votes
walks away with an additional
twenty thousand rand.
Welcome to the rand finale of
My Design Rules Season five.
My name is Danilo Acquisto and
I cannot believe the moment
is finally here.
With us in studio are
three amazing design duos,
they have been through it all
over the past thirteen weeks
and today we unlock the door
to a bright future for one duo
who will receive not only the
accolade of being acknowledged
as the best new design
talent in South Africa,
but also a check for
one-hundred thousand rand
as the judge's choice.
But, that's not all.
Our South African votes on
our website have been counted,
and the design duo who captured
the hearts of the public
will win a further
twenty-thousand rand
as the viewer's choice.
So we could have
two winners today
or one design duo might
even walk away with the full
one hundred and
twenty thousand rand.
Now it's been a competition,
but, it's also been wonderful
to see the relationships that
have formed along the way.
And now that the challenges
are done, the duos
have had a chance to relax and
think back on their journey.
(Upbeat music)
- [Nicholas] We are currently
just on the road from sights
kicking back, having a
couple glasses of wine
with our teammates.
- [Kehumile] Witnessing Sabrage
which is a chop and
pop of the wine bottle.
And yeah, yo, its
about to be amazing.
(upbeat music)
(Bottle popping)
- The pressure is
not there anymore
and we're feeling really great.
I mean, we actually get time
to relax, and actually
gather our thoughts.
- [Sinead] It's great to be
hanging out with the design duos
I mean obviously we've
been so busy over
the last couple of weeks
that we haven't had much time
to actually get to
know each other.
So here we are drinking
wine having a fabulous time,
it's awesome.
- Living our best lives!
- For us I think,
high moments each time
was just seeing
spaces come together.
We had a lot of fun with
the first two challenges.
Yeah, all of the
collaborators throughout were
very fun to work with.
- Contrast control--
holy moly, guys!
This looks like chaos.
- [Nicholas] Throughout
any project like this
there's always
challenging moments.
Your installation
moments are always tough.
There's almost no
going back each time.
Um, I think one of those
big challenge was getting
that big hammock structure up
and against the wall
aligning all those bolts up.
That was a big surface area.
- [Kehumile] Yo.
- [Nicholas] The
hanging garden that was
definitely a stress for us.
Um, getting that mechanism
up, having it fail,
having to rework it.
- [Kehumile] The door's
not opening 'cause of the
post structure.
It was definitely
like one of those.
- [Nicholas] Yeah, that caught
us in the first challenge,
for sure.
- [Kehumile] Yeah.
- Just, kind of in
hindsight, like,
you're so thankful to have been
part of this process, like.
- [Kehumile] It's
been a true blessing.
Everyone wants this
shot, you know,
and, like, for us to like
get this has been insane.
- [Nicholas] It's like as an
artist to get a residency.
It's like you get a canvas
and you get all the
paint you'll need
and you get to smash
and like that was..
what an experience
to have a bold
project behind us,
like thorough all of this.
It's really, really
something-- something special.
- It's like a portfolio
with a little um,
cherry on top.
- It's time to announce who
won the kitchen challenge.
Our winning duo is...
Team R&K!
(cheers)
- I would say like
our highest moment
has to be the kitchen.
- [Reketso] Yeah.
- [Koketso] When we
first conceptualized the
whole idea of the kitchen
it was just a mere thought.
And, actually seeing
the thing get like,
everything come together.
- To see our own little balcade
that was our highest moment!
Like, dude! This! We chose this!
We decided on this
and it's happening!
- When in the lounge --
- When in the lounge
you're, I mean --
- That was like ultimate, like,
okay we've done it!
- The heavens are just
dropping blessings and
we're just like, receiving.
- Yes, we've achieved
what we wanted.
- So grateful! So grateful!
The master bedroom was one of--
- [Koketso] Was our biggest low.
- [Rekopile] Was one
of our lowest because
we worked so hard to
ensure that it's different
that it's like very distinct.
I mean we had our feature
wall, we used blue.
That was us going bold! Color!
They've been saying we
don't use much color
we are clinical!
Then we had a whole like skull!
A skull that was painted!
And then we had, let's not
even talk about the mural.
Let's just have a moment
of silence for that.
A massive huge piece of art
and then we don't
win that challenge.
It was a lot, but
it was beautiful.
- [Koketso] But
it was beautiful!
- [Reketso] You cannot deny.
I'm gonna miss this.
Um, we're probably
gonna continue
'cause I can't
function without her.
- [Koketso] Yeah, definitely.
Like, one without the
other doesn't make sense.
- [Rekopile] It doesn't work.
Um, so it's been amazing.
We're definitely going
to miss our synergy
and we like built a rhythm.
(glasses clinking)
- Woohoo!
- Well, we feel amazing,
but also a little heart sore.
- Yeah, we're gonna
miss everyone a lot.
- And the winner of the
master bedroom challenge is...
The Perma Peeps!
(cheers)
- Oh, my God!
- Winning the master bedroom!
- [Melissa] Our best
experience on this show was
obviously our
master bedroom win.
Finally!
- Yay!
- [Both] FINALLY!
- [Melissa] Yeah, we were
so proud of that outcome
and that win and we
definitely needed it
for our confidence levels.
And, yeah, that was
definitely our highest points
in the show - getting
that win in the bag.
- [Sinead] Yeah.
I think the lowest point for
us is definitely our losses.
- [Melissa] All the losses.
- All of them, all five!
- So many of them!
- [Melissa] But we
were super proud of our
master bed win, so at
least we got one win but --
- [Sinead] We've done well,
we've gotten great feedback,
and we're proud, and we've
grown, and it's amazing.
- We took a lot out
of this competition.
- Yeah, we did. There
was a lot of growth
for both of us as human beings.
- [Melissa] As
individuals, as friends,
as business partners,
as designers.
Just growth and learning
and just experiences,
and the networking and the
people we've managed to meet.
We are just... --
- So thankful for everything.
- Yeah.
- It's been amazing.
- The excitement is
bubbling over here in studio
because today we
crown the design duo
that the judges feel
are South Africa's
next big name in
interior design!
After the break we catch
up with contestant teams
to see how they're feeling.
(upbeat music)
- Welcome back to
the grand finale!
What an exciting journey
it has been thus far
and we're very excited
to have all our
design duos with us in studio.
It's been thirteen
weeks of late nights,
stressful deadlines,
and of course,
world class cutting edge design.
But here we are at the
final stretch and we're
joined by our three design duos
Team R&K, Team
Contrast Control, and
The Perma Peeps.
- Guys! Can you believe
it? We are officially here!
And I just want to quickly
catch up with all three of you.
Perma Peeps, I'll
start with you.
And this journey has been
insane for both of you
guys, what have been
the big learnings?
- For us I think the biggest
learning that we've gone
through is we've
grown as individuals,
as designers, and
as best friends.
- [Melissa] Yeah, I know.
I mean you know this experience
we've really found our niche and
our specific design language
so we're very excited
to be able to develop
our own design language now.
And we had such a great time.
- [Danilo] Love it.
And the viewers obviously
at home are wanting to know
I mean I've got to
go through finales
a couple of times and
this is the first time
you guys are standing
in this position.
How are you feeling,
Contrast Control?
- The last four months has
all led up to this moment.
So, it's really stressful
for us to kind of be here
and kind of engaging again
with everyone and just
absorb it all.
- Yeah.
- [Kehumile] And I
think we've like really
achieved what we really
wanted to achieve, like,
in this whole
competition and, like,
it's just amazing to
see that white box
turn into, like, a dream.
- [Danilo] Yeah, you
left it all out there so
whatever happens - happens now.
You guys gave it your all.
And finally Team R&K,
your words and thoughts to
your friends who you guys
have made on this journey
thus far, what are your
feelings at this stage?
- We have a family.
We're a tribe.
The six of us have gone
through this journey together.
And it couldn't
have been better.
It couldn't have been
any other people rather
in the country. And I mean
it's just been so amazing.
We've learned so
much from Perma Peeps
in terms of like, you know,
using greenery and plants.
I mean you guys have
really like changed
our idea of design.
It has to be inclusive
with nature and so forth.
With the boys they're
so bold, so brave.
I mean their use of
color, the contrast,
I mean, they stood so
true to their name.
Such amazing people.
It's been great.
- Yeah. And I just really
want to say well done, guys.
We've come a really long way
and let's just go
out there a conquer.
- [Danilo] Nice! Aw,
guys, I love that.
Does that mean you guys are all
gonna share the money, right?
- [Collectively] No!
(Laughter)
- [Danilo] Oh, oh oh! So
it is a competition still?
All right!
They weren't alone
out there on site.
Apart from me nagging them
all the time on deadline day,
throughout the competition
they received support
and guidance from industry
mentors and judges.
(upbeat music)
- For each challenge
the design duos will
allocate to their mentor
who doubled up as a
guest judge for the round.
First up, in the double
spare room challenge
the duos were guided by a
man who knows the challenge
all too well.
Season three design
winner Rudolph Jordaan.
For the bathroom
challenge mentorship was
given by a respected
interior designer
Karen Mosdun.
Known for her bold use of
color and quirky style,
interior designer Sara
Ode gave input for the
master bedroom challenge.
With a wealth of
experience to share
renowned architect and
Director of ARRCC Interiors
Mark Rielly guided
the kitchen challenge.
And to wrap things up in
the lounge and balcony
challenge, acclaimed
interior designer
Kyle Roo brought his
expertise to the table.
In the final judging
the three main judges
were joined by a legend.
Design winner of season one
and judge in season four
Donald Nxumalo.
- I'm looking for people who are
hungry for this opportunity.
Because I understand what that
opportunity has done for me.
I know I'm only judging
for one episode,
but I'm telling you,
this is going to be a tough one.
- [Danilo] But the anchors
of the panel were the
main judges.
Brian Courtney of
Private Property.
Slay Brooks of
Bulwark Properties.
And Buhle Mathole of
Kabu Design Architects.
What an amazing journey
we've had thus far
and a huge thank you to all
of our judges and our mentors.
We are joined now
by our main judges
Brian Courtney
and Buhle Mathole.
And unfortunately we
are one short tonight
as Slay Brooks is at
home with his wife
who gave birth to
their son yesterday.
They deserve of a round
of applause for that.
(applause)
And on top of that give
them a huge congratulations
to the entire Brooks family
and we wish them all
the best during this
exciting new chapter in lives.
Judges, it's so good to have
you both with us tonight.
Buhule you start for a bit.
This season has been
the best in terms of
design we've had thus far.
What have been your feelings?
- I think it's really
been phenomenal.
Uh, the duos have
done very well.
And I think they
said it themselves,
I've seen the growth
and I have seen how they
synergize into one another.
Um, and I think
in terms of design
they've all grown,
they've learned.
They've learned how
to conceptualize ideas
and actually bring
them to fruition.
So it's been an awesome,
awesome journey.
- You're being the kind
of person I'd love to have
over at my house
because I've seen also
there's some spice in you.
- Uh-huh.
- Brian, its the first
time you've been a judge
in this position and
everything just must have been
an exciting journey
of sensory overload.
- [Brian] Absolutely,
it was fantastic.
I've had some design
backgrounds and to see what
you guys have achieved
has been phenomenal.
I think seeing young people
come in and really just
grow more than we
could've imagined
has been absolutely crazy.
Also, just the energy. The
energy that the three of you
as the three teams bring has
been exciting to be apart of.
So well done.
- It's awesome.
This show gets to reveal
and showcase the best
African designer has to offer.
And it comes from
designers like you guys
that bring that to the floor.
So, judges, thank you
so much for joining us
here today.
I'm excited to
announce our winners
and thank you for your service.
It's time now to get our
judges final comments
on each of the completed homes.
So lets begin with Team R&K.
- In all honesty, what we
have managed to achieve
here in two words is
ultimate sophistication.
Of course without forgetting
practicality and function.
- Well the client that
we designed for is
someone who I really see
as a well traveled person.
She loves cuisine,
she loves gourmet.
She would definitely enjoy
entertaining her guests here.
- Yeah, there was a
lot of thought process
and I just think I
love the floor from the
kitchen to the lounge.
It's seamless and that's
what we wanted to achieve.
- Judges, you've had the chance
to stay in those apartments.
We're dying for
your final opinions.
Buhle, we'll start with you.
- Yes I stayed in your
unit it was awesome.
In one word I have
I think is growth
for Team R&K.
I've really seen how they
started and struggled.
I remember the bathroom
challenge was like,
'AHH what are we doing?!'
and the end was
really phenomenal.
So, well done.
And I was super
chic. So, well done.
- [Danilo] Love it!
- [ Team R&K] Thank you.
- [Danilo] Brian.
- Ladies I think
you are glamorous
and that shows in your design.
The way you've grown
from your glamor room
in the spare bedroom.
Right through to how you
won the kitchen challenge
which was absolutely
mind blowing.
We were very impressed.
And we loved how you
listened to the advice
that was given.
You took on the
mentors' suggestions.
You listened to the judges.
Um, and we've see
incredible growth.
So, well done, well done.
- [Danilo] Absolutely.
Great advice and
opinions from the judges.
I'm just sad that
the mannequin's gone.
- Oh Gracie, Gracie!
- [Danilo] May
Grace rest in piece,
ladies and gentlemen!
(laughter)
It's time now to move
onto our next team,
Team Contrast Control.
(intense music)
- What we tried to do
with this whole space is
pushing the boundaries
as much as we can
with such a compact space.
And being Contrast
Control we tried to
mash up a lot of
heritages and a lot of
color and finishes,
and a lot of textures
just to put them together
and see how that all
works out.
- [Nicholas] We set out to
challenge the boundaries
and push different
elements that shouldn't
generally work together that we
kind of forcing them to.
- [Kehumile] And we
just wanted to make the
whole space very
text book but also
keeping it local, you know?
- [Danilo] The men
of season five.
We'll start back with
our judges, again.
Brian lets start
with you this time.
- Absolutely, I had the
privilege of staying
in your apartment
so that was amazing.
I think,
from the Private
Property point of view,
what brings value to a home are
kitchens and bathrooms.
And you guys blew the
lid of your bathrooms.
I think we were blown
away with the colors
you used and the bravery
in your approach.
And you were true to your
name Contrast Control
with incredible, interesting
colors the way you
brought it's and your own
opinions brought together
to make an incredible
combination.
So, yeah we really enjoyed
seeing what you were
gonna do each week.
- [Danilo] Stunning. Buhle.
- Fun! It clicked,
it was awesome.
Every week it was almost like,
'what is Contrast Control
going to do this week?!',
you know?
And I think as designers
we got to keep that going.
You know? We got to always
surprise our clients,
we gotta be true to ourselves.
And well done for being
true to yourselves!
- [Danilo] Indeed!
Congratulations to both of you.
Amazing design.
All right, that leaves us
with only one more team.
Its Team Perma Peeps.
(upbeat music)
- With this apartment
we put in a lot of
consideration into
incorporating different things
that are needed within
everyday functioning lives.
So we needed to focus
on functionality,
minimalism, permaculture.
- [Sinead] It's all about
bringing the outside in.
As well, having a
natural feel, warmth.
It's a space that
you want to be in.
A serene haven that
you want to come and
escape to from your daily
life like work, etcetera.
- [Melissa] Yeah, and
a space where people
really can feel
good, can entertain,
can have lots of family
and friends over.
And it's just a real
feel good space.
- Bringing the outdoors indoors.
Judges, your thoughts
for the Perma Peeps.
Let's start with you, Buhle.
- It was green! It was
awesome, I love that.
And I think also like, um,
I said to the other team,
you really stayed
true to what you were.
And I love the functionality
of your units, you know?
Everything, I could see
people living there and
doing things.
The extra bedroom, you
know, somebody staying over.
So well done!
- [Danilo] Brian.
- I think you created a haven.
A real tranquil environment.
Obviously using a
lot of plants and
staying true to your
beliefs around ecosystems
and creating a sustainable
environment was beautiful.
But, that master bedroom
was a masterpiece
and that's what I
remember about you guys.
- [Danilo] Mhm,
congratulations Perma Peeps.
All that's left is for us to
announce the final judgment.
The design duo who
won the judges choice
is...
(Suspenseful music plays)
sitting in this room somewhere,
we'll announce them
after the break.
(laughter)
(upbeat music)
Its the moment our
design duos have been
waiting and working for.
Throughout the series
viewers have been
voting for their
favorite design duo.
And its time to reveal
which duo came out
on tops as the viewers choice.
In total, this season the
viewers voted more than
five hundred thousand times.
And joining me to reveal
the viewers choice winner
is head of marketing
at Capitec Banks
Sbusiso Kumalo.
Please, welcome to
the stage, Sbusiso.
Right, are you nervous?
- Nope (laughs)
- At all?
He gets to give away money.
This man's excited! Alright.
- I'm the money man!
- When I say so
will you just please
reveal that winner.
But before I give you
that privilege would you
like to just say a few
words to our design duos?
Yeah, I just think well done.
I think you put
in a lot of work.
We all respect the
judge's opinions but
we know the real
judges are the viewers.
So this is the one that counts.
- Indeed!
On your time, my friend.
- And the winner for the
viewer's choice is...
(laughter)
- Don't do this to us!
- [Sbusiso] Team Contrast!
(cheers and applause)
- Thank you, man.
- [Danilo]
Congratulations, you guys.
Take your time over
here for me so we could
all be able to see that.
How are you guys feeling
at this particular
stage of the game?
- Warm, warm. Very warm.
(laughs)
- Warmer than you --
- Thankful.
- [Danilo] Throughout
the competition
Team Contrast Control
designed their apartment
with a client in mind.
The readers of SA Homeowner.
One of South Africa's
leading luxury
home and decor
magazines represented by
editor Kelebogile Nondzaba.
- You guys definitely
deserve it.
Well done and
congratulations. We made it!
(applause and laughter)
- [Danilo] Magazine clients
happy, viewers happy,
and so are our duos!
Amazing stuff.
It's time to quickly
have a look at the
voting results.
Let's take a look
at those on screen.
As you will see Team
Contrast control
owned forty percent of
viewer votes of those
five hundred thousand
votes that came through.
Team R&K obtaining thirty-five
percent of those votes
and then the Perma
Peeps coming in third
with twenty-five
percent of those
five hundred thousand votes.
A big congratulations
to Team Contrast Control
our first winners today.
It's now time for the
big one ladies and gents.
It's time to crown
the design winners of
season five as chosen
by our judging panel.
Along with the bragging
rights this duo
will also go home
with the cash prize of
one hundred thousand rand.
Here to do the honors is
one of the main judges
and also the chief
marketing officer of
Private Property Brian Courtney.
You had a tough job, my friend.
- It has been, it has been.
- Final words to our duos
before you reveal a winner.
- It was a hell
of a deliberation.
We sat for a long
time and had many
conversations. Ended up
with conference calls
because we couldn't
make decisions in the
board room. It was stressful.
And I'm privileged to
speak on behalf of the
three judges. And
privileged to have worked
with some amazing
guest judges who really
understand the design industry.
So you guys know that
we've thought this through.
This is tough because
the reality is that
of course, you all deserve this.
And it's so hard
to split decisions.
And we've had to
have split ears.
I mean each of you have
won different challenges
from kitchens to bedrooms
to bathrooms, um,
but we had to make a
decision on overall concepts,
and overall execution,
and the first impression
when you walk in a home
and look through it and
want to stay there.
So, without further
adieu, the grand winner
and something that will help
you launch your careers.
I'm very proud and very
impressed to announce
the team that we felt
has grown the most
in the competition
Team R&K!
(applause)
- Congratulations!
Well done, well done!
(inaudible)
- [Danilo] Such humble
spirits Team R&K!
Team R&K set out to
impress their client
VISI Magazine.
Under the keen eye of
renowned editor Sumien Brink.
Who checked in with them
throughout the course
of the competition to
ensure the duos designs
lived up to the
standard of the readers.
- [Danilo] Sumien! How
are you feeling about
your duos being the
winners of judges' choice?
- I can't believe it, girls,
girls, girls you are fabulous!
- Who runs the
world! GIRLS! WOOO!
(inaudible)
- [Danilo] Come on!
- Amazing, so grateful
to God. So grateful,
He's been with us
through the journey.
- So grateful.
- [Danilo] I cannot
wait to see the results
of what its going to
do for your careers.
Congratulations to
the both of you!
- Thank you. Thank
you to the judges.
- Amazing thank you so much
for turning that around
for us and for
revealing these winners.
It was a really tough
decision as you could hear.
We're joined now by
a very special guest.
So you guys can go ahead
and take your seats
in the mean time.
And I really appreciate
your time here today.
And our special
guest is from the
SABC he's GM for
channels at the SABC
David Makubyane to
congratulate all of our duos.
So David you make your
way to me over here.
Share a thought with our duos!
- Oh, congratulations, guys.
Well done to the
winners, congratulations.
I think that one the things
that I just want to say
is that we are very
honored as SABC
to obviously to have worked
this journey with this show.
Five years but also
this particular season
that was filled with
of high quality,
great innovative designs.
So congratulations, guys.
Well done.
Because of the standard
and the high quality
in this particular
season nobody is gonna
go home empty handed.
(cheers)
- Yeah, so the team
that didn't win,
Perma Peeps ten thousand rand.
(cheering)
(inaudible)
- [Danilo] Oh, man!
Thank you so much
for that announcement.
And for that extra prize
added to the Perma Peeps.
You guys all did an amazing job.
Please, give them another
round of applause,
ladies and gentlemen.
(applause)
And there you have it!
Our grand prize winners.
This competition has
opened the door to a bright
future for all of our
contestants but in particular
for Rekopile and
Koketso who have proved
they have what it
takes to rule supreme
on My Design Rules!
(applause)
(upbeat xylophone plays)
