- [Narrator] Last time
on My Design Rules,

it was a bittersweet moment

as the design duos
work towards completing

their final challenge:

the lounge and balcony spaces.

- And it's done, just like that!

- Whoop, it's over!

- [Narrator] Team Contrast
Control left no time

for hanging around,

as they put together an
ambitious hammock structure

above their lounge suite.

- Ah, this is so cool!

- [Narrator] Team R and
K got their hands dirty

with some landscaping
on the balcony.

- Chop chop!

There's no time to be a girl.

- [Narrator] And the
Perma Peeps stayed true

to their sustainable principles

with an art installation made
from post consumer waste.

- Seeing that unit
come up the stairs,

it definitely brought
a different energy

to our super stressy day.
(mumbles)

- [Narrator] In the
end, it was Team R and K

who took the victory
in the final challenge,

giving them a confidence boost

- Welcome to My Design Rules,

the interior design reality
show that will unlock

a successful career for
the winning contestants,

and what a journey its
been to this point.

Our design duos have
worked tirelessly

to complete their spaces,

and all that's left
is the final judging.

But first, they'll get to put

the finishing touches
on their apartments

and make those
last minute tweaks

before the judges arrive
for the very last time.

(rhythmic rock music)

- Throughout the competition,

I mean obviously as we've
walked through the space

we've noticed certain
bits and pieces,

snags and things that
have bothered us.

One of them being the rail
that supports our desk

within our activities room,

so that's what we're fixing.

So yeah, and I think if we just

bring it out a little bit more

and give it a leg support I
think it'll be work, yeah.

We've just extended it out

and we've added a pole
that goes down to the floor

and that's just been drilled in

and fixed and yeah
that's sorted out now

and we're feeling a lot
better about the stability.

- Another thing we weren't
quite happy with was

we never quite got the
chance to get the right rug.

The one we had originally
was a more rectangular shape

and it didn't work
within the space.

So we didn't have time to swap
it out before the deadline.

So we've now replaced
it and got another rug

and it is looking really cool,

we're very happy with it.

(upbeat music)

- Obviously we had to go back

and edit the structure
in the guest bedroom.

We had to make aligns
for the cupboards

to work properly
as we had planned,

and than also just raise
it slightly because

it was making the room feel
a little bit too small.

How's it looking up there?

Great?

- It's looking, there's
definitely a lot more space.

- I think that we're sitting
at like at two, two fiver now,

And I think we could
go up to about--

- Two four?

- Hmm.

- And then just like move
it slightly by a fifty

or a hundred.

- Yeah, yeah fifty
should be cool.

- Yeah, yeah but
it's gonna be tight,

actually it's like it fits well.

- Yeah.

- The cupboards should
open up with this.

If it doesn't then I don't know.

(laughter)
- Nah, it would be perfect.

(upbeat music)

- In our master
bedroom we decided to

change the color of
our feature wall.

It was initially blue.

We've now gone with
something more subtle,

more soft and calm.

It actually compliments our
fine art piece very well.

It's time to say goodbye
to our mannequin, Grace.

She has to go.

- Grace, I've been
meaning to tell you.

Look girl, we love you,
but you have to go.

Look Gracie, it's
not you, it's us.

We need space.

- No, actually it is you.

We need space, literally.

- In her loving memory,

we've decided to put a rail
for all the lovely coats.

And of course a shelf for shoes.

She would've loved it.

- I think so too!

(laughter)

- I'm sure wherever
Grace the mannequin is,

she's got lots of space
to live a very happy life.

But on a serious note,

being part of the series
has been such a gift

to everybody involved,

and so it's only fitting
that we celebrate

with some festive cheer.

It's been a long and
stressful journey

for our design duos

and it's all led down to this,

the final judging,

and this time our judges have
their overnight bags packed.

(captivating music)

The judges are in for
a pleasant surprise,

as they will be treated
to some holiday cheer

during South Africa's beautiful
sunny Christmas season.

Design duos, the
moment has arrived.

It's time for your
final judging,

and up until this point,

the judges have viewed
each of your spaces

and judged them
based on their merit.

But now the judges will view
each one of your apartments

in their entirety

and each duo will have
one final opportunity

to pitch your
apartments to the judges

and to explain your
vision behind your spaces.

After that, they will each
spend a night in your apartments

and make their final decision.

For the last time, design duos,

good luck, the
judges have arrived.

They are:

Slade Brookes,
property executive,

Balwin Properties.

Bryan Courtney from
Private Property.

Buhle Mathole from
Kabu Design Architects.

And as a special guest
for the final judging,

Design winner of season one
and judge of season four,

Donald Nxumalo.

(clapping)

- Donald!

- Exciting!

- We love him, we
love him so much.

- Oh my Donald!

- Oh my Donald!

Insane.

- [Nicholas] Sick
to have someone with

such a strong design eye.

- He is a legend on this show.

I mean, winner of
the first season.

- I'm Donald Nxumalo,

and I am the first
design winner in 2014.

And now since than I've been
able to establish a career

that spans from
doing hospitalities,

from doing corporate stuff,

and as well high
end residential.

Last season I came
back as a judge

and that was a huge
privilege for me because

I got to see myself as a
judge behind the scenes.

I'm coming back this year

and I'm looking for innovation,

I'm looking for creativity,

I'm looking for people who are
hungry for this opportunity

because I understand what that
opportunity has done for me.

I've been following the
journey of the design duos

and today I finally get to
walk into these apartments

and see it in real life
for the first time.

(happy music)

- Hello every one!

- Welcome to our space.

- Nothing beats walking into
the apartment of Team R and K

and seeing this beautiful
spread of food out there.

It's getting my day
started off just right.

- Walking into team R
and K's Christmas spirit

today was really awesome.

It was homey and I think
it was that warmth that

we had said was not there.

Coming in with the
laid out snack,

the little Christmas gift,

it was really beautiful.

- Welcome to Team R and
K's lovely apartment.

- The client we had
in mind is someone who

loves the most beautiful
things in life.

She's well traveled,
she's got great taste.

She's sophisticated but
also, she's practical.

- [Buhle] So she really
did inspire all the colors,

the movement, the flow,

and the functionality
of the space.

- Thank you very
much for inviting us

into your beautiful space.

I'm sure I speak for all
the judges in the sense that

this is a tranquil
peaceful environment.

I love the way it feels in here,

it makes me feel good,

it makes me feel
like I'm at home.

- Wow, ladies you've
outdone yourself.

I love how you've grown
in the whole competition.

Just having been exposed to the
spare rooms at the beginning

and how you've moved
through the spaces.

I think it's phenomenal,

and I think you've
learned a lot,

and I've enjoyed the
journey with you guys.

- Yeah, ladies well done.

I love how you've taken some
of the advice that we gave you

throughout the process

and made a couple of tweaks.

I've noticed some new things

since we've come
in this last time,

so well done.

- I know you say you
designed this for a woman.

But I think the remarkable
thing about this apartment

is that anybody can live here.

- Mm-hmm.

- I love how you've
innovated in the space,

like using the gold
bottom pots as lights.

I love how you've
used the color gray.

It's very, very innovative.

Everything's just
beautiful here.

And I can see that you
make a really great team.

- Thank You.

- Such great words, right?

Such great compliments,
affirmations.

They love our space, they
love the choices we've made.

They love the fact that
we've also changed some

of the things that
they've given us input on.

We're just so excited, man!

We're so grateful, also.

- Truly humbling.
- So humbling, yeah.

It was so humbling.

Please enjoy!

- Bye bye!

- [Group] Bye!

- [Bryan] Team R and K's welcome
was really festive and fun.

We had some good laughs,

but now the real work begins.

- We have some tough
decisions to make.

Have you guys decided
which apartments

you're going to
sleep in tonight?

- Hmm.

- What did you prefer?

- Well, Bryan, I think I'm
gonna go with the natural units.

I'm gonna go with Perma Peeps.

I'm gonna give them a go.

See how that unit
takes (mumbles).

- Nice.

- Okay, well, I think the
clientele in Team R and K

is suitable for me,

so I'm gonna try it out!

- Well, I'm more
than happy to stay in

their designer man cave, so.

- Cheers!

- Cheers!

(glasses clinking)

- And with that, the decision
of where each main judge

will spend the
night has been made.

But they will all
still get to hear

the final pitches from our
remaining two design duos,

who I'm sure are hoping
the festive cheer

will sway things
in their direction.

(upbeat music)

(upbeat music)

- Welcome back to
My Design Rules.

Each of our judges have
chosen an apartment

in which to spend the night,

and truly experience the
design of each of our duos.

(upbeat music)

- Walking into this space

knowing I'm going to stay
here for the first time

is a beautiful experience.

I'm just drawn right
through that passage

all the way to the outside area,

looking at that amazing view.

- I've really enjoyed how
they've enjoyed themselves.

I think it's quite clear
to the viewer that they

had a bit of design indulgence

and they've enjoyed
themselves thoroughly.

- I walk into the space,
I'm immediately intrigued.

I've never seen a
bed above the TV!

I haven't seen a bathroom
with tiles like that,

with wallpaper,

with texture from the tiles.

That is for me a very
interesting space

because I feel like
I'm in a candy box.

Everywhere where my eye
lands is exceptional.

- Putting the product together
isn't just the only thing

that made a lot of spoke
pieces that stood out.

They gave it its own definition,

its own character.

It may not be everybody's taste,

but you definitely will find
someone that'll want that.

(upbeat music)

Walking into Team
Perma Peeps' apartment,

I actually forgot how many
pieces they had inside.

All the bespoke items.

All the beautiful greenery.

It made me feel good.

I was home for the night.

How I find myself comfortable is

making myself a really
good cup of coffee,

sitting down with a good book,

and actually understand
my space more.

- I was really pleased with how

the final product came together.

It's a really practical
livable space,

but beautifully thought through.

- Perma Peeps standard feature,

you're really alive,

your plants are alive,

and thank you for
reminding us about

the true sense of design,

that we need to keep
things alive, beautiful,

but also keep our
planet healthy.

- With their green character,

with the green hands,

and the whole theme was
also very well carried out,

and I really liked how
they've made sure that

each and every room
symbolized that.

So they've been
true to themselves

and I really appreciate
that as a judge.

- Being in the Perma Peeps
unit doesn't just give me

a feeling of a
decorated apartment and
an interior design,

it also gives me a
feeling of a home,

a practical space
that you can come in

and have a family dinner.

You can have a family lunch.

You can have everyone around.

It's not just a beautiful space.

It's practical.

(upbeat music)

- What Team R and K
really improved on,

and I think they took the
word design discretion

to heart is how they've
started evolving,

and I saw the changes
that have implemented,

and they've listened
to their tutors,

their advisors,

and us as judges.

We saw how they changed the
curtain in the guest bedroom.

In the glam room, they've
put up an extra shelf

and extra hanging space.

It's quite practical,

and it's good,

but in this case I think
the fun in the mannequin

was really missed,

and I kind of missed that.

- What I loved the most about
Team R and K's apartment was,

it wasn't just your
straight forward apartment.

They changed our design

and they uplifted it.

So, they didn't go for
anything traditional.

They went for something new.

They went for a lot of an
African style inside there,

which is very popular,

and I like it, personally.

- If there's one thing that
really stood out for me

in this apartment has
been the hexagonal lines.

In terms of how it has
been brought through

in different areas from
the tiling up to the pots,

up the light fittings,

up to the mosaics.

And I think it had
a certain element of

how you read the space,

and how you actually
experience the space.

- The way they've actually
added value to that apartment

makes it so much more
rentable than it was.

They've just done
a fantastic job.

- Team R and K as people.

Big hair, big nails.

Everything is big.

Big personalities.

And, of course,
their design itself

match up with their personality.

It's big.

It's talented.

It's creative,

It's spot on.

I love it!

(hip-hop music)

- We're so excited that
we get to show the judges

our space at night.

- [Man] Prime time!

- Contrast Control,

I met the guys,

but you know, these
guys are so laid back,

but there's such an element
in this home that I just,

shake, shake, shake, senora!

- [Nicholas] Ooh, I finally
got to bake those cookies

I've been talking about.

- Yo, Nick's cookies
are the best.

You should start a
bakery after this.

- I should.

- ♪ Nick's cookies

(laughter)

- When we started
this competition,

we had a clear idea of

how we wanted the whole
space to look like,

and we always wanted to play
on contrast and binaries.

Kind of using
different elements that

you wouldn't really
see them together,

but forcing them to
kind of work together,

achieving all of the feels
that one human being can feel

through textures,
through colors,

and we also wanted
it to be muted

and not overwhelming
to anyone that

was not really accustomed
to using bright colors.

- [Nicholas] We didn't want
to create something normal.

It's not creating or
it's not designing

if you're not pushing
the boundaries.

So, from the outlook,

we've wanted to do
something very different.

We don't want this to feel
like a conventional space.

We're trying to push the norm.

We're trying to find new ground

and see what's possible.

So, we just wanted to
be in this experience,

and be able to show
ourselves so raw to everyone.

- I just wanted
to say well done.

I think we've watched
you guys grow as a team,

and really come together

and mix some amazing ideas,

which we didn't necessarily
think would work,

but they have.

So, well done!

- You guys, I definitely
agree with Bryan.

You guys have been
innovative the entire time.

All new ideas.

The creativity is
through the roof.

It's not traditional.

It's beautiful.

- Looking at this
whole unit now,

I'm excited,

and I think it is
really creative.

You're real designers at heart

and I think you had fun.

So, well done.

- I know you're called
Team Contrast Control,

but I think you should be
called Team No Control,

because I think you've really
gone into the competition

with the gusto,

with no abandon,

and it shows in your product.

I'm really inspired,
I'm truly inspired.

For me, I haven't seen
this level of creativity

with no abandon in
a very long time.

Well done.

- It's always an honor to hear
amazing feedback like that

from such distinguished people.

It's really humbling to stand
up there in front of them

and hear it.

- That's one of my favorite
moments in the whole show.

It's amazing.

I mean, we gave up a
lot for this thing,

so, hearing those words just
makes everything so worth it.

We really hope that you
guys enjoy your stay here,

and we've prepared some
night cap snacks for you.

So, please, enjoy.

- [Buhle] It was really nice
to relax at the end of the day.

They've really walked
a very long journey,

and it's been enjoyable
doing this with them.

- Sitting together with my
fellow judges and having a drink

and reminiscing
about the season,

it's been fantastic.

It's been a long road

and these teams have
done really well,

and we're really
enjoying the space.

(piano music)

- It's really great
that we have a Buhle

staying in our
apartment for the night.

We did initially
design it for a female.

- Getting to spend a
night in this place,

one tends to experience the
whole space holistically.

As a designer, as well, you
create a space for a user.

How do you experience a space?

What emotion it evokes?

And it's been really
wonderful to notice

each and every detail.

To pause, to be surprised,

to feel elated, whatever.

And I think I really
have enjoyed that.

(upbeat music)

- If I have to pick one favorite
piece in this apartment,

it would be the art
piece in the lounge.

I love the way it brings
the drama into the room,

especially at night
when you turn off

all the lights in the place

and you put just
that on with your TV,

it feels like you're
in another world.

Perma Peeps, they won the
master bedroom challenge.

That makes me excited!

I'm spending the night in there.

- Perma Peeps are super
excited that we get Slade

as the judge that will
be spending the night

in our apartment.

He's a family man after all,

so for him to be the one
to experience our apartment

and its open plan
sets up to experience

the family flow that it
offers, is really cool.

(upbeat music)

- Overall, it was
easy to make myself

feel at home in this space.

I think I really enjoyed
the finishing touches.

The art on the walls
was spectacular.

They really just added a sense
of personality to the space.

- Nice to have Bryan as
the judge that gets to

spend the night
in our apartment.

I think he really gets
what we've done here,

and like, be cool to see
how he enjoys the space

over a longer period of time.

(upbeat music)

- Spending the night
in an apartment is

the best way to
fully experience it.

And I'm sure our design duos are

hoping our judges sleep well

and have sweet dreams.

Come sunrise, they'll
be having breakfast

hosted by the Perma Peeps.

That's next.

(upbeat music)

(upbeat music)

Welcome back to My Design Rules.

I'm sure the judges
are feeling well rested

after spending the night
in the designer apartments.

They've experienced
festive cheer,

and heard the final
pitches from Team R and K,

and Team Contrast Control.

But what do the Perma
Peeps have in store?

(serene music)

- We are in the unit

preparing breakfast
for the judges,

and one word: hungry.

Our breakfast looks delicious.

- It looks so good.

Those berries, the color.

It's looking so festive, I
wish we could get in on that.

- Yeah I'm kinda
like, can we join?

(laughter)

- What a spread!

- Good Morning!

- Nothing gets me more
excited than coming outside,

seeing a full spread
of breakfast out there.

I mean, it was healthy,
it was natural.

It was Perma Peeps
through and through.

(mumbling)

- Great people, alive and this
apartment is a true testament

to who they truly are.

They really care.

- For us, plants approach
a holistic point of view.

They bring in the psychology.

They bring in just overall care,

and we found that as humans
today we do not interact enough

within nature these days.

So that's what we're
trying to do is

bring nature into the inside.

- Very minimalist, natural,

a calm place to
just be and relax,

and the kind of place where you

actually want to go
out and entertain.

You want people to
come here and relax,

and just feel the
energy of the space.

- As long as this
continues to flourish,

this will continue to
be a natural haven.

So, well done.

- So Perma Peeps, for me,
I think you're the team

that's probably
improved the most.

So, well done to that.

I think that in and of itself
means that you're growing

and you're gonna have incredible
careers going forward.

So, well done.

- Wow, I mean, yeah.

The things that they had
to say really made this

entire grueling experience,

all the late nighters,

and all the hard graft

and graft under the nails,

it made it so worth it.

Their feedback couldn't
have been better.

We're so proud.

- Everything from the art work,

the floors,

the details,

authentic.

I love it.

- You're gonna make us cry.

- All right.

- Oh, get back in their tear.

- Not ready!

- There were a lot of
emotions coming through.

I mean, at the end of the
day, this is our baby.

We've worked hard on this.

It's been in our life
for a few weeks now,

so the emotion was high.

It was strong.

- So, I just want
to commend you for

taking your concept right
through from the beginning.

I think you were very strong
about what you wanted,

and it's been through
from the spare rooms,

the bathrooms,

every space.

So, I really appreciate that,

and you didn't
deviate from that.

Well done.

- From the bottom of
the Perma Peeps hearts,

we just actually want to
say a very big thank you

for this entire experience,

and just going
through this with us.

We are so thankful
for all the feedback

and learning opportunities,

and all the growth that we've
obtained in this experience.

We really hope you enjoy
the spread we've put out.

We've actually incorporated
some of the herbs from

our kitchen plant wall.

Some chocolate mints in
your breaky muslei bowl,

and some thyme on your
savory cold meats.

Please enjoy guys!

- Thank you.

- The Perma Peeps have
done a fantastic job of

bringing their theme
through week on week,

consistently being true
to their core values,

and I really admire that.

- With the breakfast
and getting those gifts,

at first I really appreciate
how it was wrapped.

It was the Perma Peeps re-used,

the way it was wrapped.

And we opened up it was
some of their slates

that had been converted
into a cheese board.

What I really appreciate is that

they've been true to themselves.

Re-used and re-cycled
and there it was.

- Guys, it seems like we
have a very tough decision

ahead of us.

- I think the rest of
the judges and myself

are gonna have a long
conversation about

who's gonna win this

because it is really difficult
to make a call in this case.

- I don't know how we're
going to come to conclusion

on the winner.

These apartments are all great.

They're all unique.

So, it's gonna be tough.

- I know I'm only
judging for one episode,

but I'm telling you, this
is going to be a tough one.

- I believe all jewels
are real winners.

But yes, there has to
be that one winner.

(upbeat music)

- Yes, indeed, there has
to be only one winner.

And I'm certainly so
glad I don't have to

make that decision,

because each of
those apartments is

looking absolutely spectacular.

There's only one episode
left in the season.

So, tune in for the grand
finale as we find out

who walks away with
that sizable check,

and the accolade
of South Africa's

best new interior design talent

on My Design Rules.

(exciting music)

Don't miss the
