Moonshine season is underway and shiners are eager to get product to market; Josh mashes in while awaiting Cutie Pie's fate; Mark and Digger struggle with materials building an experimental three-pot still.

She's definitely my sidekick.

The first time
We started the bike,

I had been leaving her at home,

She had been pouting.

She looked at me like,
"Are you going to leave me here?

And she jumped right up
On the harley

And stood right up on the tank,
Just like she belong there.

I knew it was meant to be.

And I don't want it to be today.

My season started off
Really rough.

I'm so far behind.

I've got people
Breathing down my neck.

Right now, that's
The least of my worries.

All I can think about
Is cutie pie.

In order to meet their ambitious
1,100-gallon season goal,

Mark and digger sketch plans
To add a 300-gallon pot

To their 400-gallon still.

Ever done anything like this.

Digger:
Our agenda today is we are
Going to start a new vision.

We're gonna do
A three-pot still.

All right, so, we've got
300 gallons of mash here.

We've got 200
In each of these.

We are going to increase
Our capacity.

We are going to give us more
Flexibility on what we can run.

It's a big bite
To have to digest,

But I think we're up
To the task.

This monster is going to be.

But with adding 300 gallons
To our production value,

We're going to catch up
If everything goes right.

Start an operation of his own.

To put us through the winter.

Lance: you know, I'm feeling a
Little bit of pressure this year

The absinthe mess up.

I think I've bit off a lot more
Than I can chew,

And dad, he's never been
This overbearing before.

So, I really want to get
His approval back.

They now need to
Reestablish themselves

Through the laborious process
Of moving their product

One sale at a time.

He loves that dog, and he's had
Her ever since she was a puppy.

And I can't just stay here.

The first couple of shining has

For the perfect spot

To get their new still site
Off the ground and out of view.

What's the matter

You've been laid up
All winter lazy?

Yeah, pretty much.

After a slow start, sondra
Turned their season around

By tapping into
A lucrative female market

With her
Fruit-brandy recipes.

It's good isn't it?

Bringing them within 40 gallons
Of their 350-gallon season goal.

It tastes
Like watermelons!

But their season almost
Came to an abrupt end

When their still site drew
The attention of nearby hunters.

We've set a goal
This season -- 375 gallons.

We're going to focus on
The higher quality brandies.

We've tapped into
The female market.

It sells for more on the gallon.

It was good to us last year.

Why change what ain't broke?

I see my nice-sized trees
Out that way back in there.

I don't know if that's
Something that you,

That we could use
At all.

They're kind of hard
To build off of.

This year is going to be
A little different

As far as our setup.

Oh, god.

Last year,
We ran on the ground.

The focus of our still site
Was make it look

Like something it's not.

We used a deer stand,
Like a deer blind,

But we still drew attention.

Last year we camouflaged it
Where people could see it.

We are going to
Cover this one.

We are going to move
The entire operation

Up off of the ground
In the trees.

How high up
Are you thinking?

High enough up
My nose starts to bleed.

Narrator: this season,
Chico and sondra have a plan

That will truly get their
Operation off of the ground.

They are going to build a still
Site high in the tree tops.

Constructed of 2x10 joists,
The tree platform will be enough

To house their still, mash
Barrels, and completed orders.

Water pumped
From a nearby mountain creek

Will allow them to make mash
And cool the condenser.

A boom-and-pulley system
Will allow them

To haul raw materials up
And lower finished product down.

Finally, chico and sondra
Will camouflage their platform

From the bottom and sides,

Rendering their site
Virtually invisible.

These two are perfect,

They are just exactly
What we are looking for,

But we've got to have
Three or four perfect.

Dang!

Well, I mean,
This is part of it.

And if that means 32 feet up in
A tree, then that's what it is.

I see a bunch
Of straight trees.

Yeah, now you're getting
The picture.

We've just got to find a group
That's closer to water.

This is the fun part.

You get to walk around
With me in the woods.

We ain't got nothing
Illegal on us.

I can throw you
In the creek.

We've got kids at home.

So, we have to make sure
That me and her are safe.

We get it up in the trees
So we are not at eye level.

Where people is not looking,
People don't see us.

But yeah, see these four.

We're talking about.

It's covered.

I mean, the undergrowth,
We are hid.

If we go from there to here
To here to here,

It's the tree house
You always wanted.

Right.

But, when we start
Getting materials and stuff

To build in here,
I do need more help.

I'm not a carpenter.

To pull this off,
I'm going to need outside help.

But when it comes to people
That I trust at my still site,

I really don't trust anybody.

We will cross that bridge
When we get there.

This is aggravating as hell.

This build done,

We won't feel like
Making liquor.

Digger: well, our goal today is
To build the body of the pot,

Which is 300 gallons.

I'm going to just go ahead

Once we get
This three-pot done,

It should give us 100 gallons
Of liquor every time we run it.

That's double what
The twins will do.

The building
Of this three-pot still

Is going to be
A little bigger project

Than what we thought, but we are
Writing another chapter

In the history books
Of moonshining.

It's going to be something
Nobody has ever seen.

About the time
We get this done,

Some prick will come in here
And catch us.

Catch us? We ain't doing
Nothing wrong yet.

We are going to build mailboxes
Back here out of copper.

With the rolls
Of copper we have,

One roll is not enough
To make the body.

So, we've got to take
Another roll,

Tin lop those two pieces
Together to make a circle.

That makes the body of the pot.

This is probably
Going to take us days

To build
This damn still.

Them old timers build one
Five or six hours bigger.

That's what they say,
But I don't know.

Mark: being able to build
A still form scratch,

It's just another way
Of me honoring my heritage.

I hope you didn't have
Anything planned

For the rest of the day.

A still as big as we are
Going to try to build,

It takes a lot of copper.

Tremendous amount of soldering.

We don't know how this is
Going to play out.

What they didn't know

Flavored their wine

Impaired mental function,

Seizures, kidney failure,
And death.

The testing of wine

Reveal that they contained 1,000
Milligrams of lead per liter.

A single teaspoon full of
The wine would have been enough

To cause symptoms
Of chronic lead poisoning.

Thousands of years
Later in the u.S.,

Prohibition era demand for
Illegally produced alcohol

Was so high that many
Unscrupulous moonshiners

Cut corners by building stills

That used lead soldered
Car radiators

As condensers.

Running shine through
These radiators

Tainted the liquor
With toxic levels of lead,

In widespread poisoning,

And in many cases, death.

They are going to come up

Back in north carolina,

Lance's makeshift
Mash barrel lids

Were no match for mother nature.

It would have worked
If he would have taped it

All the way
Around the barrel,

But he only taped it
On one side.

When the rain fell on it,
It just caved in

And dumped the water
In the barrel.

Narrator: rainwater
Diluted and cooled the mash

To the point
Where fermentation ceased.

I'm sorry, but I messed up
Because I was in a hurry.

That's what I keep
Trying to tell you.

Slow down.

It makes me wonder if lance
Has got what it takes.

This is not a business to be in
If you're not serious with it.

I mean, it's my bad, dad.
I'm sorry.

I love making moonshine,
But when you're hearing somebody

Tell you constantly what to do,

It gets more like you're at
A job, and you've got a boss.

That takes the fun
Out of it for me.

Dad's respect back,

And I can't make
Another mistake.
