Midnight Sun (2016–…): Season 1, Episode 3 - Episode #1.3 - full transcript

It is clear that the horrific murders committed in Kiruna after a death list. Three men are already dead. When Anders study murder scenes closer he makes a painful discovery. The traces of Sami symbols.

The sky was burning with the Northern Lights.

As the snow reflected the flames,
reindeer stood impassive.

The reindeer herder didn't know
something evil was coming...

..but he could feel it.

Suddenly the mountain split open
and the crack took a human shape.

The herder stopped breathing,
for he knew what he was looking at:

A creature from the abyss... from Saivo ♪
(♪Kingdom of the Dead).

The creature took him by his trembling hand
and led him to a frozen waterfall.

"What's bigger? The fear you're feeling
or the will to overcome it?"

The herder hesitated, but followed him
inside the mountain, down in Saivo.

The creature explained it could no longer eat,
'cause reindeer droppings fell right onto his table.

The herder was offered silver
to move his reindeer somwhere else.

Instead, he asked to be hugged.

Creatures from Saivo only touch the different ones.

The ones who suffer.
The ones in the abyss.

What happened when the herder turned down the silver?

Some say he could no longer feel love,
'cause his heart had become cold.

Others say the kind of love he was looking for
doesn't exist in our world.

Us kids from Stockholm,
we never heard this story.

My grandma would tell it to me
again and again.

Didn't you wanna hear it?

I didn't wanna be a damn Lapp,
I wanted to be like everyone else.

It's got to do with the investigation?

Is that why it came out only now?

The reindeer herder got lucky.
- How come?

Better stay away from Saivo creatures.

Maybe someone else is also lucky.

Did you say 'abyss'?
- Did I?

Jessika was supposed to be back tomorrow.

Weren't you gonna tell her?

I didn't had the chance...

53YRS OLD MAN KILLED WITH A BEAR SPEAR

Hey! Any comments?

As you noticed, the press got hold of the story.
You know how to deal with that.

Before starting discussing the case...

...I wanna talk about this.

Suspect. Fear.
Hate. Violence.

Evidence is leading us to the Saami population.

But maybe this is done on purpose.

This could be an artfully manipulated hate crime.

The perp is leaving Saami signs,
but that doesn't mean he is a Saami himself.

He may be trying to provoke hatred
and suspects agains the Saami.

"He"?

Well, we don't know if it's a man or a woman yet,
but...

...I want you to keep that in mind.

Wait, maybe I'm a bit slow-witted...

You're saying we DON'T have to
focus first on the Saami criminals we know?

There's no such thing as 'criminals',
there are people who, in some occasion, commit a crime.

In Sweden, we don't sentence people
on an ethnic base... at least, not yet.

One question, aren't you Saami.
- So?

Maybe it's not that strange that you're trying to...

Statistically speaking, Saami don't have
an attitude to violence...

You haven't been in Kautokeino lately then...
- I know they're stabbing each other up there!

Nevertheless, it's a peaceful culture!
They don't even have the word "war" in their vocabulary!

Alright, sorry about that.

What do we know about the 22?
- 22?

A number has been assigned to the victims,
starting from 22...

...and counting back, 22... 21... 20...
So we have still 19 potential victims.

If we manage to locate just one,
we have a chance to find the killer.

Mabee?

Yes...

What? You're in Stockholm now?

She's coming, Johan.

She's coming...

Do you understand, Johan?
She's coming!

Damn Lapp!

Good morning, Kristofer.
- Morning. - Could you hang those up for me?

BRUTAL MURDER IN KIRUNA.
MAYBE A HATE CRIME.

- POLICE AFTER A SERIAL KILLER.
- MAN KILLED WITH A BEAR SPEAR.

Hi, it's me.
Have you read the papers?

Turn on the computer.

Do they say who the victim is?

Really? Ok, see you later.

Hi, do you know something about that?

No, but a friend of mine says
the victim's name is Forsberg.

Forsberg?
- Jörgen.

Some sort of guide for teenagers.

Ok, bye.
- Bye.

It could mean nothing.
- Or something.

Surely it's a coincidence.

Coincidence?

Forsberg was a strange man.

He probably pissed somebody off.
It's got nothing to do with us.

It's happening again, I can feel it.

It's happening.

What do you want?
- Hi, mom. She's Kahina, a colleague.

We need help.

For what?
- Work.

Despite your wide knowledge?
We need people who speak the language of the institutions.

I'm a prosecutor, mom.
I deal with brawls and speeding violations.

You're here 'cause I was speeding?
- No, it's a Saami related matter.

So now I become useful.

I brought some sweets.

I've never seen these plants.

Maybe you can contact someone who knows them.

What are you saying?

You realize what you're asking?

Don't be afraid, dear.
The lizard will protect us.

Your daughter is pregnant.

I don't know what to do!

You want me to get you in touch with a nåjd?
- Yes.

I'd help you if you were a Saami.

But you're not.

I'm trying to catch a murderer
who's causing harm to the entire Saami population.

That's all I have to offer.

I'm sorry you can't accept me for what I am.
Thanks for coffee.

Hi, honey. Yes, all fine.

How's the belly?

Ok. I have to go to the basement now.
The damn dryer again.

I'll call you later. Kiss.

Kimmo!

Didn't you hear me knocking?
- There was a tractor, it scared the dogs.

Something happened?

Jörgen Forsberg used to live around here.

Did you see or hear something unusual lately?

No. What happened to him?
- He was murdered.

Don't you read papers?
- Yes, I do. It was him who was murdered then.

Shit... I didn't know...

Did something happen that could be
connected with his murder?

No...
- You're sweating.

I thought they kept you in shape at work.
- I'm probably coming down with something.

Look after yourself or you won't be able
to dig out minerals for the company.

Say hello at home.
- You too.

Have you read about the killings?
- Insane.

It's terrible.
- Yes.

My name is Anders,
prosecutor from Luleå.

She's Kahina Zadi
from Fench police.

I'm investigating the murders.
I'm sure you heard about it.

It didn't take long to the Great Swedish
to gather up all the Saami.

Unfortunately we're very busy...
- I'm neither a policeman nor a Swedish.

You're not accused of anything,
but maybe you can help us understand...

...why someone is trying to
cast suspicion on the Saami.

You know of someone who hates the Saami?
- More than usual, you mean?

Yes.

Black for me, thanks.
No cheese.

I'll stay here.

So you're against moving the town?
- Strongly against.

It's appalling that the company
can decide something like that.

I like my house where it is.
Are you against too?

I'd prefer some more discussions
before taking such a decision.

Who's this?
- Evelina Geatki.

I'm sorry for earlier.

There's an isolated house at the feet of Udtjavarris.

There you'll find who you're looking for.

Nåjd...

When Sweden took over the land from the Saami, they came down
hard on the nåjds because they understood their importance.

Their drums, the "goavvdis", were confiscated
and some of them were even burned at the stake.

So, ever since, most of the nåjds
have lived in secrecy.

I never met one myself, but I heard
they can be not easy sometimes, so we'll see.

We checked all Foreign Legion recruits from 1970 to 1980.
No Pierre Carnot.

He changed his name?
- Possible.

He may have gotten French citizenship
in exchange for war merits.

I don't know about that...
- Yes.

Do you have something new?
You been quiet lately.

I'll send you a report today.
- Today?

Today is already over.
Did you just wake up?

Excuse me?? I haven't slept since I got here!
- That's good, do some work.

Asshole!

My name is Anders Harnesk.

I'm a prosecutor, not a policeman.
I have a few questions to ask.

Harnesk?
- Yes.

Got cigarettes?
- No.

Jenny-Ann, did you hear about the murder?
- Yes, terrible.

Did they say the victim's name?

What is this?

A geological report about the measurements
under the center of Kiruna.

A quite expensive request to check something
that's already been checked.

I thought I had asked for something else.
I'm not in my right mind lately...

It happened to my sister too
in the last months of pregnancy.

In this case... that's alright.
- Yes...

NSD reports office.
- Hello.

If I have something to report,
I can remain anonymous, right?

Yes, of course.
- Ok, good.

I have information that must be made public.

Hello.
- You want some cheese?

If it's offered to me.

Thank you.

I'd never met a nåjd.

What makes you think you have now?

Many are afraid.

Many don't know themselves.

Since I was a kid,
I had the feeling...

...that something was bound to happen.
Something evil.

I think that's why I've been chosen.

This feeling... I still call it
as I did as a kid.

The great pain.

The great pain?

What does it mean?

I was hoping you could tell me.

There's something I wanna show you.

Do you know these plants?

These must never be mixed together.
- Why?

You know it.

If they're combined,
a new poison is created?

Oh, no! It's burning!

They are singing the "jojk".

Are you still thinking about
those measurements.

No, I'll think about that
after the baby is born.

Aren't we just going around the block?
- I wanna check on Kambo, he hasn't been to work in days.

What?
- Can't you just call him? - He lives right here.

Please, please, please...
- Get lost you two.

So?
- It wasn't Kambo.

How do you know?
- I know his voice.

Wait, calm down.
- I am calm.

Let's go.

I said let's go.

This one started ringing.

Check the number and put it in the DOS.

Where did you find the first victim?

The one... on the helicopter.

That murder wasn't made public yet.

To whom?

Here is where we found the first victim.

The blood was shaped like a circle,
like a big...

"Goavddis".
- Yes.

This is a "sieidi".

Does your Saami part know
what a "sieidi" is?

Something sacred... like a rock, a tree...
- Or a place.

This sieidi is special.
It's a sacrificial place.

So we can't really define it as a crime scene.

It's a sacred place.

I asked you about the plants.

I tell you what you need to know,
not what you're asking me to say.

The plants you talk about...

They grow at the feet of the Kebnekaise.

There's someone you should talk to.

A young man, driven by a false belief.

He travels the world, meets shamans...

Collects plants and ingredients...

...which you don't find in Sápmi.

What's his name?

They call him Bangkok-Jori...

...'cause he's been incarcerated in Thailand.

He's not trustworthy though.
He doesn't have our... respect.

You know where we can find
this Bangkok-Jori?

Facebook.

SEE YOU IN NANGIJALA, JOHAN.
MOM MARIE AND DAD SPAREN.

Harnesk!
Anders!

The nåjd says you haven't finished yet.

Tell her I'll be back...
- She wants to talk now!

They just found a new piece of paper,
in the notice board of a football field.

Number 19.

Was the name "Burlin"?
- Yes, it was.

So...

I wish there were more people like you.

Lawmen?

Brave men.
- Brave men?

You're mistaking me for someone else...

According to my ex-wife,
I'm the most coward man in Sweden.

You followed your heart
even if you were scared.

That is courage.

The mountain...

Yes...?
- For you it's open, Anders Harnesk.

What mountain?
- You know.

What you're looking for... is invisible.

Like a crack... find the borders.

What do you know?
- I don't "know"... I "feel"... "feel".

Strong winds today.
- Is going to be ok?

I'll fly through anything
but it's better if it's not lightning.

I have Bangkok-Jori's register here,
or Jori Kaskills, which is his real name.

Not a mother-in-law's dream,
I tell you that.

Arrested and convicted for possession
of illegal substances and narcotics on numerous occasions.

Marijuana, LSD, peyote, opium.

Charged but not convicted for armed robbery.

Started when he was 14
and threatened a teacher with an ax.

What kind of tent id that?
- A kåta, a Saami tent.

They followed their reindeer...
- There he is! Go down!

He's running!
- Wind is too strong, gotta go back up again.

Then we'll have to jump. Now.

No, that's my service weapon!

Shit!
