Miami Vice (1984–1989): Season 5, Episode 6 - Line of Fire - full transcript

A drug kingpin on trial for murder puts a million dollar contract out on a punk rocker who is the star witness for the prosecution. The FBI want Crockett and Tubbs to safe house the witness, but keeping him alive is going to be a challenge.

Now, Detective Crockett,
can you enlighten this court

as to your duties with
the Miami Police Department?

I'm assigned to Vice.

And in that capacity
do you ever use informants?

Yes.

Was Dexter Sims
one of your informants?

He was till they burned him.

How was Mr. Sims employed
at the time?

He was a mule, drug courier.

Did he tell you
who he worked for?

Objection, calls for hearsay.

I'll allow it.

He worked for Carlos Cantero.

(PEOPLE CHATTERING)

Detective,
I'd like you to examine
Government's Exhibit 12

and tell me
if you can identify
the person in the photograph.

Dexter Sims.

Your Honor, I'd like to
have the right to recall
this witness at a later time.

Granted.

Mr. Davis.

How's your health, Detective?

Fine.

Recovered from your breakdown?

(PEOPLE CHATTERING)

It wasn't a breakdown.

According to this
you went nuts.

You became a raging psychopath
who couldn't remember
his own name.

I was undercover.

You always try to
murder your partners
when you're undercover?

Objection, Your Honor.
Irrelevant!

Overruled.

Isn't it a fact that
you shot Detective Tubbs
with intent to kill?

Yes or no, Detective?

I don't remember.

MAN: A long day, Harry.

MAN 2: Yeah, it sure is.

A very long day,
I'll tell you that.

I'm glad this day is over.

That was supposed to be
a sealed document.

How did this scumball
get a hold of it?

Money talks.
Cantero paid heavy bread
for your life story.

Hey, Sonny, come here.

Sorry, pal.
I haven't had my shots.

It's about Dexter Sims.

I chopped
that garbage up myself
for you as a present.

Hey, Sonny,
be cool, man.

(LAUGHING)

SONNY: One hell of a system
we got here.

Cantero pushes more flake
than Tony the Tiger

and we're the ones
on trial here.

Hey, man, the important thing
is that you tied Sims
to Cantero

and that chump
is going down.

Not on circumstantial,
he won't.

Not with this jury.
Hell, they're gonna
run him for mayor.

There's no way
they're gonna buy his act.

Oh, Rico,
all the citizens saw

was a custom-made suit
and a manicure.

What the hell?
If it ain't Cantero,
it'll be some other cockroach.

We'll take them
one at a time, man.

It's not just this one.
It's a whole flood of crap
that keeps rising every day.

The drugs and the pollution
and the corruption.

All anybody cares about is
kiss and tell, dirty laundry
and public relations.

(TIRES SCREECHING)

Hey, look out, man.

(PEOPLE SCREAMING)

Cantero's boys.
He's sending those jurors
a message.

Well, from the looks
on their faces,
I'd say they got it.

You all right,
Detectives?

Who wants to know?

Bates, FBI.
This is Agent Randolph.

Would you come with us?

Well, gee, we'd love to,
boys, but we got
an important meeting.

Gotta watch some paint dry.

There's been a change
in your itinerary.

What kind of change?

We've got a package for you
to take to Miami.

We want you to store it
in a safe place

and return it to us
in 72 hours.

You got a package,
call FedEx.

Otherwise, cut to the chase.

A witness saw Cantero
pump four rounds
into a DEA agent.

We've got him.

He's scheduled to
testify in three days.

If he lives.

Cantero just put out
a million-dollar contract
out on him.

Every shooter in the country
is gonna be trying to get him.

We think
he'd be safer with you.

Whoa, whoa. Back up.
My hearing must be shot.

You're telling me that the FBI
is gonna turn a star witness
over to locals for protection.

Well, it's the last place
they're gonna look for him.

I've already contacted
Lieutenant Castillo.

He said it's your call.

Call in every 12 hours to
report your status.

I don't want to
know your location
unless you need assistance.

Have him in court
by noon Friday.

You got it.

He's all yours.

You're not coming in?

Uh, no thank you.

(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING)

Keith Mollis.

They told me
you guys were Vice.

I figured, hey, man,
that's ripping.

Vice dudes know
what's happening, right?

Not like these G-dudes.
They're embalmed,
I mean it, man.

Night of the Living Dead.

Least you guys
don't dress like G-dudes.

So I hear Miami's
a pretty moshing scene.

Insane clubs, huh?

Maybe this won't be so bad.

You heard the new Scatter yet?

(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING)

Yeah, I heard it

This speed metal crap
is just warmed-over
Hendrix riffs

played twice as fast
and half as well.

(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING)

How long is this gig?

Never leave the room alone.

You want anything,
we'll get it for you.

Don't answer the door,
don't answer the phone.

No, no. No problems.
Well, what about backup?

Hey, we're not on the beach.

Stay away from the windows.

Hey, lighten up, man,
there's nothing out there.

Don't tell me, pal.

You stop a bullet, I got
a lot of paperwork to do,
all right?

You mean, I can't go out?

Very good. Next week
we're gonna work on colors.

Yo, Crockett,
I never been to Miami.

You know, I wanna
clock some beach time,
check out the clubs.

Come on, man.

What do you think this is,
spring break?

You want a party,
you come back after the trial.

(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING ON TV)

(MAN CHATTERING ON TV)

Hey, you better be careful,
that could qualify
as a narcotic.

(EXCLAIMS)

Makes my mouth water.

Hey, what's with the 'tude,
huh?

Here, put some of this on it.

It's the only thing missing.

Hey, you hear me talking
about all that MSG
you're choking down?

Man, that stuff comes out
of a test tube, all right.

I'd rather
mainline toxic waste
than eat that crap.

Toxic waste? Sounds like
a speed metal band.

Doesn't matter anyways.

It's all poison.

Air is polluted,
water's polluted...

I mean, we're getting
killed by this damn
greenhouse effect, you know.

(IMITATING ELECTRIC GUITAR)

We're living on borrowed time

Whole world's getting
covered with toxic slime

Rico, get Star Search.

No more phone calls,
we have a winner.

Least I didn't screw up
the world.

No, you're just looking for
a good reason to roll over.

Hey, excuse me for living,
all right?

Done.

God!

(DOOR SLAMS)

You believe that?
Do you believe
what we just heard?

Yeah,
kind of reminds me of you.

Hey, hey, hey.

Oh, yeah, yeah.
You know what I'm talking...

Yeah.
I've earned my attitude.

(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING)

I can't take anymore.

I'm going to the store.
Any requests?

Earplugs.

Night, Keith!

SPORTSCASTER:
... a double-header,

the Cardinals win the opener,
two to one.

They're in the bottom
of the sixth inning.

... the Expos, two to one.

Windup and the...

He's still doing Cole Porter.

What did you say?

I said,
he's still doing Cole Porter.

Hello, in the bridal suite.

RICO: Yeah, Stan, what's up?

Probably nothing,
but some punker just came out,

got in a cab and he looked
a little like our client.

I don't know. He asked
about a couple of clubs,
so I told him.

He asked about two clubs.

Which clubs?

Well, you got the Demolish,
the Rusty Needle...

I got the Needle.

We'll take
the Demolish.

(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING)

You waiting for me?

I don't know.
You worth waiting for?

You're damn right
I'm worth waiting for.

Party's over,
twinkle toes.

Thrashing band, Crockett, huh?

Get out of here.
I'm gonna thrash you.

Who's the glam man?

God, he thinks.

Man, I gotta start
going to church.

That was a bonehead play,
Junior.

I ought to cuff you
to the radiator and
make you eat through a straw.

Oh, come on, Crockett,
nothing happened.

Listen, kid,
don't you understand

those clubs are the
first place Cantero's men
are gonna look for you?

Those wankers can't tell
one metal-head from another.

To them, we all look alike.

Well, that may be so.

Except that you have
one outstanding feature.

What's that?

You're worth a million, dead.

He's at the Biltmore.

Sonny, it's started!

You all right?
You?

Yeah.

Keith!

Keith!

MARTIN: Must've
picked up a tail at the club.

It's the only way
they could've found him.

Well, the lease is up
on this place,
that's for sure.

Word gets out,
this'll be a free-fire zone.

We could also
bounce him back to the Feds.

He's their problem.

No way.

This kid can nail Cantero

and, by God, I'm gonna
make sure he lives
long enough to do it.

Any ideas?

Nothing like sailing
to forget your troubles.

It's a big ocean.

A couple of days
on the St. Vitus
ought to do it.

There's no backup
if they find you out there.

Police, freeze!

FBI.

No federal involvement.
That was the deal, Daly.

Agent Lasota was simply
providing extra backup
in the case.

Well,
she jeopardized our security.

Some security.

The kid got away from you.
Went to a damned disco.

That's enough, Bates.
Huh?

That's enough, Bates!

Look, Detective,
I know you're angry
and I don't blame you.

But our entire case
rests on Keith Mollis

and we just wanted to be
in a position to help
if you needed it.

Now, where is he?

Where is my damn witness?

You booked
a three-day tour, Daly.

No refunds,
no exchanges.

I'm warning you, Tubbs,
I'll bring you up on charges.

If you do that as well
as you run security

then I ain't got
nothing to worry about.

Great.

Hey, Crockett, where we at?

(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING ON STEREO)

Elliott Key.

We'll stay here the night.

(MUSIC STOPS)

Hey, what are you doing?

Try some of that.

Eric Clapton?

Yeah, man.

(LAYLA PLAYING)

(MUSIC STOPS)

Okay, so he's good.

Damn right.

He's been around
for 20 years.

Think those boys of yours'll
be around for 20 years?

I don't think the planet's
gonna be around that long.

You know, I used to
know someone like you
when I was a kid.

Yeah, he thought
he was a real hard case.

Went around
putting things down
all the time.

Everybody thought
he didn't give a damn
about anything.

At least that's what
he wanted them to think.

Underneath
he was just scared to death.

Of what?

He was scared
people would find out that
he hoped things would change.

That's not my trip.

No, I didn't think so.

Causes and protests, man.

That's just like lame stuff
from the '60s.

Yeah, idealism is for
fat girls with guitars right?

You got it.

Then how come
you're testifying
against Cantero?

Maybe I don't like
his gold cufflinks.

Oh, well,
that's good, yeah.

'Cause we sure wouldn't
want it to be for idealism,

'cause that's for losers.

Yup, you got it.

Yeah.

Little fishies
in the brook...

Yeah, right.

...come and bite
my little hook.

Do what you have to do.

You're not very popular
with the Feds.

To hell with them!
They're the ones
that broke the deal.

Look, no one is gonna know
where that kid is this time.

If the schedule's right
they should be at Elliott Key.

And they're coming in
at Compton Point
tomorrow night at 8:00.

Be there.

There you go, kid.
Catch of the day.

Right.

It's not too terrible,
Crockett.

Well, imagine me
getting praise
from Paul Prudhomme.

So what's the scoop,
Crockett?

Why are you a cop?

Well, I like
rubbing elbows with
all the distinguished people.

The pimps, the junkies, you.

I'm serious.

I mean,
it's a sewer out there.

Everyone's on the take.

Well, not everybody,
not yet anyway.

Doesn't it get to you?

Yeah, it gets to me.

Every damn day.

So why you do it?

To make the world safe

for children.

Go forward!

Sonny! Sonny!

How'd they find us?

That's the $64,000 question,
kid.

I mean,
the hotel I can understand,
that was my fault.

But nobody knew
we're at Elliott Key.

Nobody but Rico.

Maybe he sold us.

You can just forget that, pal.
Just forget it.

Something's wrong. It wasn't
supposed to go like this.

I mean it, Sonny, something's
definitely not right.

Chill out, man.

We'll blend in
with the coastal traffic.

We'll be at Compton Point
by 8:00.

That's nuts, man,
it's a setup.

I'm telling you.
They're gonna be
waiting for us.

Nobody's gonna be
waiting for us but Rico.

Forget it, man.
Keith.

I ain't going.
Keith.

I ain't going, stop.
It's insane!
Hey, hey, man. Come on!

Keith!
Hey, listen to me.
Listen!

We're gonna make it.
We're gonna make it.

We're gonna make it.

Rico has never let me down.

Never.

Come on.

Guess that's what
it's all about, huh?

Trust your partner.

That's all there is, kid.

Come on.

I'll show you
how to sail this tub.

No word?

They were supposed to
call at 8:00 sharp.

The marine operator
can't raise them.

Yeah, give me
Commander Brooks,
Coast Guard.

Tell Felix to double his fee.

Don't involve me, Carlos.

Tell him! Tell him
that kid doesn't leave Miami.

Is that clear?

Good. Now let's...

No sign of them,
Lieutenant.

We searched the entire area.

MARTIN: Where are you headed?

Back to Miami
to get some answers.

Come back, we've got
another assignment.

Hey, kid, wake up.

Here, catch.
Molotov cocktail.

Refreshments in case
we get more company.

Paraffin seal. Nice work.

How do you know about that?

Oh, we used to chuck them
at Metallica concerts.
Just kidding.

My old man showed me.

He won a medal
with one of these in Korea.

He and his men
were pinned down.

He made a Molotov cocktail
and took out a machine gun.

Where is he now?

He's dead.

That's a tough break.

You think
this tip is legitimate?

That gentleman at the end
is Felix Reyes.

He works for Cantero.

According to lzzy,
he's got a source in the FBI

who feeds him information
right out of the files

and there's a meeting
going down here today.

That's how they knew
you were at the Biltmore.

Don't look now,
but Reyes is making a move.

It's Bates.
He's our man.

You take Reyes.

STAN: Police! Hold it!

(PEOPLE SCREAMING)

(GUNSHOTS)

Hold it!

Out of the car. Now!

Get down! Get down! Get down!

Damn!

(PANTING) You jerk.
I told you not to run.

You're taking the fall, Felix.
Cantero can't help.

Theft of government documents,
conspiracy to obstruct,
attempted murder...

We're talking
12 to 14 minimum.

A deal's
the only chance you got.

So when's the next hit
going down?

Anybody going out
for cigarettes?

Get out of here.

What?

You're released.
Beat it.

Oh, Felix,
don't worry about Cantero.

I'll make sure he understands.

Understands what?

That you didn't roll on him.

I didn't tell you nothing.

I know that.
It's Carlos I'm worried about.

Carlos and I
are like brothers.

That's real good, man,

'cause Carlos is gonna wonder
how you walked out of here.

He's gonna wonder
who fingered Bates.
But I'll talk to him.

Hey, man,
you can't do that.

So long, Felix.

Try not to
think about Dexter Sims.

That was cold, man.

Maybe I can
lay some info on you.

MARTIN: We're concerned
about Crockett.

We gotta get word to him
about the next hit.

Him and the boy
are out there alone.

Now, we know Cantero's got
five shooters active in Miami.

He's offering 1.5 million
for whoever makes the hit.

Word on the street is

some of the top
out-of-town shooters
have been flown in.

Two from Detroit,
one from Baltimore.

(BEEPING)

Rico, you and Stan have to
get on this right away.

We have to
get word to Sonny.

You in position, Rico?
RICO: Affirmative, Lieutenant.

MARTIN: Take them!
TECHNICIAN: Take who?

Freeze.

You bugged my office.

OCB wasn't the target,
we were.

Our objective was to
identify the agent
supplying Cantero.

By handing Mollis over to you,

we could control
the information about
the location, trace any leaks.

You used my men as bait.

You set up your own witness.

It was a secure operation
until your men abducted him.

Lieutenant, listen to this.

RICO ON TAPE: And they're
coming in at Compton Point
tomorrow night at 8.00.

Now Bates heard that.
They're gonna be waiting
for Sonny.

Go.

Keith, get down, get down,
get down!

(RAPID GUNFIRE)

Sonny!

Crockett, anybody hurt?

Bates?
Yeah.

You two all right?

Yeah, except for the bastards
shot up my boat.

You all right, kid?

Hell, no!
They shot my boombox.

Hey, I'm out of here, Sonny.

I am out of here!
Goodbye forever, pal!

(WHOOPS)

Terra firma, I'm home!
Hallelujah!

I can't believe it.

Where the hell were you
when we had
this little tea party?

Mopping up another hit team
down the road.

Tubbs is right behind me.

KEITH: That's the last
boat ride I'm ever gonna take.

You got that right.

(GUNSHOT)

Oh, God.

No, damn it!
Get a medivac!

They're on the way, Son.

Hang on, kid.

Get a medivac!

They're on their way, man.

Fight it.

Come on, Keith.
Come on, Keith,
you got to fight it.

WOMAN ON PA: Dr. Jackson,
please report to the OR.

Dr. Jackson...

How is he?

Can't say yet.
He's got blood in both lungs.

We haven't been able
to stop all the hemorrhaging.

Doc, you got to
save this kid, all right?

We're trying.

RICO: Why don't you
go home, man.
I'll hold down the fort.

No, it's all right.

Detectives,
I want to thank you both.

You made a major contribution
in the Cantero case,

despite this
unfortunate incident.

"Unfortunate incident"?

You, slimy dog...
Hey, hey, Son...

I ought to knock
the living hell...

Hey, hey, back off, man.
Sonny!

That kid is worth 10 of you,
you understand me?

Back off, man, back off.

Well, can you
postpone the trial
until he recovers?

That won't be necessary.
This contingency
was anticipated.

So what the hell
does that mean?

Would you state your name
for the record, please?

Keith Mollis.

Mr. Mollis, do you recognize
the defendant in this case?

Mr. Mollis, I repeat,

do you recognize
the defendant in this case?

JUDGE: Mr. Mollis,
I must ask you
to answer the question.

(SOBBING) I can't do it.
I can't do it.

I can't.

Hey, partner.

There's something
I gotta tell you, Sonny.

No, you don't, kid.
It's all right.
I already know.

You're Joey Hardin, DEA.

My first assignment...

I wanted to tell you.

Don't worry about it, kid.

I understand.

You're out there
for your first time,
you're alone, you're scared.

You go by the book
'cause that's all you got.

You mad?

No. No way, man.

My father...

Yeah?

He was a cop,

killed on duty.

He would have been
very proud of you.

I screwed up.

No way, man.

You did a fine job.

You did a fine job.

You mean it?

Damn right.

You can back me up
anytime, pal.

Hey, Crockett,

the other witness, he testify?

Yeah.

Sure as hell did.

Cantero's
going down the river
for a long, long time.

Nurse!

Nurse!

Insufficient evidence
to establish guilt.

Therefore, I have no choice

but to rule in favor
of the defense
and dismiss all charges.

Mr. Cantero is free to go.

Ladies and gentlemen
of the jury, I thank you.
You are dismissed.

It ain't over
till it's over.

Ripping, man.

We even brought you some ammo.

Anthrax, Megadeth,
Crumbsuckers...

Yeah.

Honestly? You like
this stuff, Crockett?

Honestly? All my favorites.
