Messiah: The Promise (2004): Season 1, Episode 1 - Episode #3.1 - full transcript

We'll interview the prisoners
separately.

Don't worry.

I won't be far away.

- We'll call you when we finish.
- Okay.

Gerry.

I'm your solicitor, Thomas Stone.

This is Dl Duncan Warren.
DS Kate Beauchamp.

It's okay, Gerry.
They just want to hear the truth.

- Tell them what happened to you.
- What he alleges happened to him.

- We haven't got all day.
- I know!

Oh, I want to.

Only you don't have to go back
out there and face them.

Let them go!

Let them go!

Tierney.

Drop the knife.

Now close the gate.

Close the gate.

Kate.

Kate!

- Kate!
- Come on, lads.

- Let's have her.
- Move. Move.

- You're crazy.
- You're the crazy one, Meti.

- Did you think I wouldn't find out?
- You maniac!

Gerry.

- Gerry!
- Let go of her!

Tierney has them.

If I'd known he was involved...

I grabbed the guy
who had me hostage.

Next thing, Tierney appears.

He was going to cut her face.
The gate--

The gate slams
and Kate's on the other side.

It's not your fault, Duncan.

She doesn't know him.

She doesn't know
what he's capable of.

Will Houseman, governor.

Mr. Houseman.

Tierney asked for you.
Is that a good or a bad sign?

He asked for a doctor, which means
there are already casualties.

Sir, this is Dr. Philip Ryder,
registrar, St. Paul's paramedics team.

This is DCl Metcalfe.

No, no.

Until we know exactly what he wants,
we'll play it his way.

Ask for Prisoner Tierney.

Tell him Red Metcalfe's here.

He can't breathe.

I need you to keep his chin up,
his head back.

I've got a chest drainage
to re-inflate his lung. My bag.

Scalpel.

I need you to hold him really still.

Which one of you is Tierney?

Red Metcalfe is here to see you.

Pace Tierney, DCl Metcalfe.

There's no need for introductions.

That'll be all Mr. Houseman,
thank you.

Long time no see, Red.

Brought you some cigarettes.

I seem to remember
that's the brand you like.

Well, that's a nice start
but I gave up before the uprising.

- Do you want some food? Water?
- No.

Thanks.

Looks like
we've got ourselves a situation.

Bound up for so many hours,
bad conditions, tempers flare.

You know how it is.

What can I do for you?

Nothing.

Well, there's one thing.

No one's to be punished for this,
no criminal charges, no loss of parole.

Well, I'll pass it on.

I mean, you know--
Obviously, it's gonna take some time.

Well, I'm not as patient
as I used to be.

I'll make sure the Home Office
understands the urgency.

Maybe the Home Office
requires a bit of pressure.

One hostage executed
every ten minutes.

You've nine and a half minutes
starting now.

Just give me a chance
to talk to the authorities.

Come on, you can trust me.

We can solve this together.

It's good to see you again, Red.

No one's to be punished.
No criminal charges. No loss of parole.

Or he starts killing hostages.

- What?
- I'll have to speak to my superiors.

- I'm not authorised--
- You've got eight minutes.

Leo.

- Get up. Get up. Get up. Move it.
- I've found you.

I'm warning you, Tierney.

- When this is over--
- What are you gonna do, Mr. Reeves?

- Move! Come on, move.
- Okay. Okay.

Move. Come on. Move.

Come on, move.

Come on.

Tierney!

We go in.

This is Pace Tierney
we're talking about.

It'll be a bloodbath. If the Home Office
gets off its ass and cuts the deal--

Tierney didn't want a deal,
he just wanted an excuse.

No matter what we promise him,

he'll play with Kate
and then he'll kill her.

Maybe you're not the right person
to make this decision.

I'm the senior attending officer.

Are you sure about this?

Seven minutes.

Officer Reeves.

Stop this, Tierney. Stop it now!

Tierney, stop it now!

- I didn't start it, you did!
- No, Tierney, for the love of God!

Okay, okay, okay.

Okay, whatever you want.
Whatever you want.

I'll talk to the governor.

Please. Please. I'm begging you.

Please.

Only weak men beg, Peter Reeves.

Don't.

No, not me. Please.

Kill her! Kill her!

You heard the boy, Leo.

Red's gonna miss you.

No one will miss me. I have no one.

Please. Please.

Please. Please, please. I beg of you.

Help me!

Help me!

- Let her go! Let her go!
- Hold it! Police! Stay still!

On the floor! On the floor, now!

Feel my fingers down here?

Now try wiggling your toes
for me, please.

Wiggle your toes. Okay, okay.

All right, gunshot wound, left leg.

What the hell are they doing here?

We're the designated hospital.

Rapists, murderers, to the front of the
queue. Is that our mission statement?

I have a transplant procedure
to prepare for.

BP's quite low. Could you take over?

- You okay?
- I have to find Thomas Stone.

- You should go home.
- I'll arrange a car.

Not till I know he's all right.

Leave her.

She blames me.

She's not thinking straight.

Give her time.

Mustn't blame yourself, Red.

I don't.

- We hand this over.
- A man died in that prison.

- This is a murder enquiry.
- You have Tierney.

- Let someone else do the paperwork.
- No!

How's Susan going to feel?

DCl Metcalfe?

Clare Fenton, hospital manager.
I'm told you're in charge.

The Home Office requested

that the police take custody
of the prisoners.

I want separate wards.
Officers. Prisoners.

- I don't want them here at all.
- We checked.

Most of the prison hospital wings
are full.

The others aren't equipped
to handle acute cases.

I can't just turf existing patients out
without having somewhere to put them.

And there is a chronic shortage
of beds.

If you need any help
making these calls,

my team
are willing to work with you.

- We need a room.
- Right.

Well, if you could avoid interrupting

the day-to-day running of the hospital
as much as you can,

your officers can use the back
entrance past the building work.

What are you having built?

Nothing.

The building's sick.

Thank you.

Thank you for what you did
in the prison.

Will he be all right?

He's going for surgery.
We'll know better then.

How are you?

Well, they sent me home,
which is crazy, I should be here.

Well, is there somebody
you can call?

I know you told Tierney no one would
miss you, but you must have friends?

Family?

He's gonna be in theatre for a while.
Why don't you do as they say?

Go home. Get some rest.
And come back later.

What are you doing there?

Come in.

Look who's here.

- How are you?
- Okay.

- How's business?
- Busy.

Always good for a good builder.

Do you want a cup of tea?

- Hot chocolate?
- No, thanks.

- What happened to your face?
- There was a riot in a prison.

- Are you all right?
- Yes.

- Are you sure?
- Yes, Mum.

A cup of tea. That's what you need.

There was something about that
on the news headline.

Might be some more.

Before I came to you,

did I live in the country?

No.

You can stay the night
if you want to.

Your dad's using your room,

but I can make up the bed
in the small bedroom.

I have to get back to work.

Apparently, the riot was triggered

after police went into the prison
to investigate complaints frrom inmates

ofr alleged brutality
by frellow prisoners and prison offiicers,

DCI Metcalfre, report suggests

that the ringleader
was prisoner Pace Tierney,

The circumstances ofr the riot
have yet to be investigated,

It wouldn't be appropriate fror me

to comment on the identity
ofr the participants at this time,

You're a dead man, Tierney.

Murder of Prison Officer
Peter Reeves,

attempted murder of a police officer,
incitement to riot.

You'll never walk free again.

This will make your mouth dry,
Mr. Tierney.

You'll be feeling sleepy soon.

I'm having sweet dreams already.

The fragment doesn't appear
too deeply embedded.

It should only take
about half an hour.

Fine. I'm fine.

Thanks.

Don't be a stranger.

How did it go?

Well, the next 1 2 hours are critical.

How could that

monster do this to us?

There's nothing more
we can do here, so--

I went to see my family.

Every time I wonder
if it's gonna be different,

then, bang, I hit some invisible wall.

What, you don't get on?

My mum hides behind
offers of cups of tea

and, "Are you sure you won't
have another piece of cake?"

My dad. My dad looks at me like--

I'm adopted.

I was 5 when they got me.

Sometimes I thought they were gonna
take me back to social services,

ask for a swap.

So, what happened
to your real parents?

Oh, they were killed in a car crash,
along with my brother.

- I'm sorry.
- No, it's okay. I don't remember them.

I-- I have to go.

He isn't going anywhere.
How about coffee?

Yeah, that sounds like a plan.

- Mine's a white, two sugars.
- Yeah.

- I gotta take a leak.
- Okay.

Where's Mr. Tierney?

How are you?

Fine.

Fine as in
confused, insecure, emotional?

Yeah, I'm angry, you know.

I'm angry that Pace Tierney
has broken back into my life.

I'm angry that he nearly killed
my sergeant, Kate.

I can hear those lies.

And I'm the person that l--
I doubt is myself, you know.

After all this time,

discovering that I'm still resentful
for what he did to me.

You and Susan?

To all of us.

You're the only person
I can say this to.

Well, I'm glad you're angry.

I'm extremely glad you're angry
at Tierney and not yourself.

I'd like you to see Kate.

Tierney doused her with white spirit.
He was about to set her alight.

Of course.

My Dl managed to get out.

But I think Kate's resentful.

If it affects the team,

I've no choice. She's out.

- I'll do my best.
- Thank you.

She needn't know
about our connection.

Anyone else know
that I was your counsellor?

No. Just my superiors.

And Susan.

That you were my counsellor.

Nothing else.

- Has Mr. Tierney turned up?
- No.

Great. He's probably been taken back
to the ward by mistake.

We're checking.

- How long have we got?
- He could wake up any time.

- We'd better inform the police.
- Right.

Mr. Symons.

Mr. Symons.

Mr. Asiz, general surgeon.

We have a space on one of our lists.

They'll be preparing you for theatre.

- There's no sign of him anywhere.
- What?

How long has Tierney
been missing?

They're not sure.

Look in the prisoners' ward,
see if anybody else has been mislaid.

No mobile phones in this area.

They interfere with equipment.

- Is he here?
- Yes.

- Whose is that bed?
- Pace Tierney.

- That one?
- Leo Symons.

- And where is he?
- Premed.

Where's Leo Symons?

This isn't Symons.

The notes say it is.

- Wrong bloody notes.
- If he isn't here, where is he?

Kidney dish.

Send it for biopsy.

One moment.

Doesn't look as abnormal
as the lVP suggests.

He's gone into VF.

All right, get Mr. Asiz.

Go back to sleep.

You're safe now.

Someone must have
swapped his notes.

And it appears Mr. Symons previously
had his right kidney removed.

Before you removed
the remaining kidney,

you must have noticed
it was healthy.

I'm not some housewife

picking up a packet at the supermarket
and peering at the content.

God knows what the fuss is.
The man was a criminal.

Any procedure on him
was a waste of hospital resources.

Mr. Henderson is in shock.

Our doctors have a duty of care
whoever the patient is.

Excuse me.

A perfectly good kidney has gone
to waste as a result of this debacle.

You check you got the right bloke
before ripping out his organs?

The notes, the wristband
said he was Colin Scott.

Surely you met him
before you performed surgery?

Yes, of course.

Once a patient is in a surgical gown
and anesthetised--

We all look the same to you.

Maybe you can function
at top efficiency on two hours' sleep.

Are you saying Mr. Henderson
wasn't fit to operate?

We proceeded on the basis
of the notes and the wristband.

As far as I'm concerned,
that constitutes safe practise.

- Get out.
- You've got to come. Now.

He had a metal fragment in his eye.

The machine's magnetic force
dragged the fragment back,

embedding it in his brain.

Tierney had a pacemaker.

The MRl would interfere
with the pulses regulating his heart.

I can't be certain yet,
but I imagine that's what killed him.

Find the owner of that badge.

- I told you to go home.
- I thought you might need me.

Tierney was under my protection.

I want that police guard
off the force.

Why now? Right under our noses.

I can run Kate back to her flat.

Go buy them a coffee.
See if they saw anything.

- I mean it. You shouldn't be here.
- I'm all right.

- You've been in a major incident.
- How will staring at walls help?

I wanna keep working.

On one condition.

- You see a counsellor.
- I don't need to see a counsellor.

I've been where you are, Kate.

You can't do this alone.

I don't understand.

You're not the only officer
who Tierney held hostage.

He held me hostage 1 1 years ago.

Does Duncan know?

Yes.

Well, he could have said.

You've hardly talked to him
since the riot.

We're a team, remember that.

You wanna stay on the case,
you see the counsellor.

Tell someone.

And lose everything I've worked for?

Two murders in less than six hours.

Both victims died in police custody.

Kate.

Describe the run-up
to the stabbings.

Dl Warren and I visited the prison

to take statements from inmates
Gerry Whyte and Sal Meti.

They alleged acts of brutality,
extortion and harassment

are taking place within the jail.

Those responsible
include both prisoners and officers.

During our visit, a riot took place.

Dl Warren managed to escape.

I was held hostage

along with the dead officer, Reeves,
and Gerry Whyte.

Leo Symons

doused Prison Officer Peter Reeves

with white spirit.

Pace Tierney set fire to him.

SO1 9 entered
and secured the scene.

Injured prisoners and officers were
moved from the prison to this hospital.

Now Pace Tierney and his sidekick,
Leo Symons, have been murdered,

despite being under guard.

First question is,
how could that happen?

Second question.

Tierney's murder
was brutal in the extreme.

Who could kill so sadistically,
and why?

Who knew Tierney
had a pacemaker?

Everyone. His nickname was Pace.
Tough guy. Knackered heart.

Same goes for Leo Symons
and his missing kidney.

He was badly beaten up
in the prison three months ago.

As a result,
he had to have it removed.

Symons claimed
he never saw his attacker.

The MRl, who would know the effect
it would have on the pacemaker?

Well, anyone who can read.

There's a huge sign on the door.
"No metal objects. No pacemakers."

What do we know about the badge?

Well, it belongs to a Dave Fenshaw,
he's a porter.

He was at home at the alleged time
of Tierney's abduction.

But it's possible
the killer borrowed his jacket.

Tierney was serving time,
two counts for murder,

one for armed robbery
and abduction.

Was the killer someone Tierney
and/or Symons crossed in the jail

and is now on the outside?

Could be an inmate

who's got contacts on the outside
who's still banged up in prison

where they took advantage
of the move here

and the subsequent chaos.

Obvious candidate,
fellow prisoner, Sal Meti.

Apparently,
he threatened Pace Tierney

as he was being taken for surgery.

Well, every inmate
was allowed a phone call

when they were first admitted.

Find out who Sal Meti spoke to.

Whoever killed these men,

the connection would appear
to be the prison.

Check the records
of every prison officer.

Including Governor Houseman.

Do not think that because Tierney
and Symons were hardened criminals

that their deaths do not warrant fair
and thorough investigation.

We'll conduct this case
as we would any other.

We are not seeking
an heroic avenger.

We're hunting a vicious murderer.

What happened to the stray bullet?

There were three shots.

I only heard two.

You were at the hospital last night.

What time did you leave?

Late, I don't know.

Who did you speak to?

My officers, the inmates.

When Sal Meti came to you with
these accusations, what did you do?

Informed you immediately.

Meti claimed that Whyte had in the
past been badly attacked by an inmate.

I thought it best to have Whyte
tell you himself.

Did Meti name the inmate?

No.

Is there some reason
why he couldn't trust you?

No, of course not.

Who else did you tell
about the purpose of our visit?

No one.
I promise my default protection.

Everything was in confidence.

The first time my colleague and l
arrive at the prison there's a riot.

So you see that as a coincidence?

Yes, what else could it be?

Well, either you've lost control
of your prison, Mr. Houseman,

or you're running
a corrupt administration.

- Officers--
- That isn't true.

Leo Symons was so badly beaten
three months ago

he had to have his kidney removed.

Are you suggesting
he kicked himself?

My officers did not assault Symons.

Then who did?

I don't know.

Pace Tierney
threw white spirits over me

and nearly set fire to me in your prison,
Mr. Houseman.

I wanna know how that happened.

I wanna know
what you're covering up.

Nothing.

Why would l?

Any time you might say
anything incriminating,

stop the interview,

Tell them you're too ill to continue,

Okay.

I love you.

Me too,

Unchain him.

Prisoner Whyte.

Can you leave us, please?

You were heard to issue a death threat
to Tierney last night.

He was going to burn Gerry alive.

Was he one of the prisoners
that you and Gerry

intended to accuse
in your statements?

He was not just one of them,
was leader.

So why would he threaten
to execute Gerry and not you?

Tierney was a psychopathic animal.

Did you order his death?

I'm due to go to Cat C.

After that, I'm up for parole.
Why would I risk my freedom?

Tierney said to you,
"Did you think I wouldn't find out?"

Find out about what?

Me talking to you.

According to the governor,
only me, you and Gerry Whyte

knew the real reason
behind our visit.

You must have done something
to upset him so badly.

It's a Pace Tierney speciality.

- Planning grand acts of revenge.
- I did nothing.

Suddenly every villain we interview
is a saint.

Tierney threatens your pal, so you
have him and Symons murdered.

Oh, I was shot.

By a policeman, when unarmed,
as I tried to help my fellow inmates.

The shattered bone in my leg is proof
that for you all villains are same.

Right, you're not the Sal Meti
who had his business rival

executed in front of his kids.

I did not order his death.

And certainly
not in front of his children.

You were very angry in the prison.
You went for Tierney.

He had knives to our throats,
remember?

Go get yourself
something decent to eat.

We'll be in Room 23-A.

You feel well enough for a little chat,
Gerry?

- Sal.
- You don't have to say anything

without solicitor present.

- What about my lunch?
- I'll get it.

It's got his name on it,
he's allergic to peanuts.

- If you touch him--
- He's not my type, Mr. Meti.

Thanks, we'll be fine.

Are you gonna hurt me?

Why would I hurt you?

Because I told Tierney to kill you.

I thought I was gonna die.

This friendship you've got with Meti,

it seems to me it's all one-way.

- What do you mean?
- You get stabbed trying to protect him.

You're the one
about to be barbecued.

What does Meti do, just watches?

It wasn't like that, you know that.

According to the governor, you
were badly beaten up by an inmate.

- Where was Meti hiding then?
- He didn't hide.

Yeah, right. What did he do?

He nearly kicked the bastard to death,
that's what he did.

It was Leo Symons
who beat you up.

So Sal Meti punished him.

Why did Symons beat you?

Tierney wanted me to do stuff.

Symons deserved it.

Anyway,

he's dead now, it don't matter.

Look.

I wanna go back to the ward now,
okay?

- I wanna be with Sal.
- Eat your food before it gets cold.

Someone will come for you.

Gerry Whyte grassed you up.

You assaulted Leo Symons.

It could cost you parole.

Gerry sees me
as some kind of hero.

This is all hearsay.

Maybe Symons did recognise
his attacker

and told Pace Tierney.

"Did you think I wouldn't find out?"

Isn't that what Tierney said?

You're a hypocrite, Mr, Meti,

You complain about brutality in the
prison and you kicked a man to death.

You are claiming
that Governor Houseman

told Tierney that you were going
to the police?

Unless of course, you did.

So after the riot, you went back

to tried-and-tested methods
ofr extracting justice,

The M Rl machine, the pacemaker.

That's a touch worthy of Tierney.

I did not have him killed.

Don't be so modest.

Many, many people have wanted to.

You succeeded.

Crash Team to Garret Ward,
Crash Team to Garret Ward,

What's happening?

Charging, stand clear.

No change.

Are we all agreed?

Yeah.

Okay, I'm calling it.

Did anyone check him?

The nursing staff weren't informed
he was here.

What about his prison officer?

I told him where we'd be,
he never said he was going off duty.

Anyone else see Gerry today?

According to his notes,
Mr. Henderson.

He's knife wound
was near the kidney area.

Mr. Henderson ruled out
renal damage.

It's routine procedure.

Well, Home Office pathologist
will do the postmortem.

There's no sign of suspicious death.

The doctors are suggesting
heart failure.

He died in police custody.

There'll be an inquest.

Gerry's officer
should have informed his replacement.

Let's hope that's how
the Home Office sees it.

He was badly injured,
he was hardly likely to leg it.

Well, not now he isn't.

- He died of natural causes.
- Let's just wait for the postmortem.

Hi.

Hello.

How are you?

Alive.

I'm glad.

Imagine how guilty I'd have felt
if you died trying to help me.

Come here.

You saved my life.

Thank you.

Yeah, well, Philip helped a little bit.

Gerry Whyte's dead.

I heard.

Poor Gerry.

I want Governor Houseman
charged.

If he'd been doing a job properly,
none of this would have happened.

We could have died, for God's sake.

Who's this from?

My dad.

He's even put kisses on.

You're lucky.

Have you got family?

Mum, dad, sister.

- Did you manage to get any sleep?
- No, I'm not tired.

I'm having nightmares.

Close my eyes and see it over
and over, it's like the edited highlights.

I woke up this afternoon,
I thought I was choking.

I hear the gunshots.

Weird sounds, wind in the trees.

Doors.

No wonder my boss
is sending me to a shrink.

We think we've got problems.
It's a well-known medical fact,

all psychiatrists are barking.

Centre stage.

Of course I was angry at the time.

And scared.

I mean, this man
was gonna torch me.

But he's dead now.

And that makes me feel safe.

Who do you blame?

Blame?

You're on a routine case in a prison.

Suddenly you're caught up
in a violent situation.

Alone among rioting prisoners.

Facing a vicious psychopath.

It must be someone's fault.

I wasn't alone.
Thomas and Philip were there.

Tell me about your family.

Are they supportive?

They're great.

I'm adopted.

But we're very close.

I've arranged a meeting
with Gina Meti, Meti's wife.

Meti rang her
as soon as he was admitted.

The prison officers report

one incoming call from her
yesterday morning.

- Before Gerry died?
- Yeah.

Take Kate.

Background on Mrs. Meti.

I haven't had time to look at it.

Gina Meti used to be a barrister
before she married Meti.

She handled his appeal.

She lost her position in Chambers
as a result of their relationship.

No one likes a brief
who crosses over.

Screws would've given her
a hard time.

She had a public argument
with the governor apparently.

He put her and Meti on closed visits
for a while.

Well, Governor Houseman
never took a tough line on anything.

I'm just reading what it says.

- Are you okay?
- Fine.

We're a team.

We share things.

DS Beauchamp, Dl Warren.

You must be here
about Tierney and Symons.

Two prisoners die in police custody.

Someone is gonna
have their wrist slapped.

Which leads me to believe
that the next question must be..

Do I know anything about it?

What makes you say that?

Why else would you waste
your petrol coming here?

I'm afraid we came to give you
some bad news.

Sal?

Gerry Whyte.

- What about Gerry?
- He's dead.

- He's been murdered?
- Has he?

- I assumed.
- You don't seem very upset.

And you take that
as a proven indicator of what? Guilt?

Why are you so keen
to ask the questions?

I'm the one blessed
with a razor-sharp mind.

Are you planning to leave?

I'm always leaving

whenever they move Sal
to yet another prison.

Ironically, he's right back at the prison
where we first met.

Put those down
or get a search warrant.

You had an argument
with the governor.

- What about?
- I've had several arguments.

I believe he's obstructing Sal's transfer
to a Cat C prison.

Therefore, his eligibility for parole.

Why would Governor Houseman
do that?

Ask him.

Have any of Sal's criminal associates
been in touch with you?

I'm beginning to see
this as police harassment.

- I must really threaten you.
- Why would I be threatened?

A barrister married to a prisoner
fighting a corrupt system.

Did this champion of justice
you married tell you

about kicking Leo Symons so badly
he had to have his kidney removed?

My husband tried to save lives
in that riot.

If the truth would come out
about the assault,

your beloved husband wouldn't
have been home for a long time.

You've sacrificed a lot for Sal Meti.

Are those two statements linked?

Symons, the victim,

Tierney, his close mate,

and now, Gerry, the witness,
are all conveniently dead.

No wonder you're glad
Gerry's been murdered.

Something's burning.

Let me do it.

Call the Crash Team, he's alive.
Maintain his airways.

One, two,

three, four, five,

six, seven,

eight. Where's the Crash Team?

Ten, 1 1, 1 2, 1 3.

I felt a pulse.

One, two, three,

- four, five, six,
- Get a bag on him.

- seven--
- Get some fluids into him.

- Eleven, 1 2, 1 3, 1 4, 1 5.
- Nothing. Shock him.

Two, three, four, five, six,

- seven, eight, nine, ten.
- Charging 200, stand clear.

No change.
Charging 200 again, stand clear.

No change.
Charging 200 again, stand clear.

Keep going, maintain his airways.

- Move, move, move.
- One, two, three, four.

- It's too late.
- Come on. Don't tell me what to do.

- Six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
- Philip, he's dead.

What happened?

Hypothermia can still the heart,

reduce vital signs,
but he was young.

Opiates?

No, his pupils were dilated.

Possibly some sort of paralysing agent,
ricin, God knows.

We need a tox screen,

urgently.

Initial tests suggest
he ingested tetrodotoxin.

It's a heat-stable poison
that blocks conduction along nerves.

His muscles,

included those needed for breathing,

would have become progressively
more stiff and paralysed.

His heart rate and blood pressure
would've plummeted,

his pupils would have become fixed
and dilated, in short,

he appeared dead.

How is it administered?

We're not sure yet.

Tetrodotoxin is found
in pufferfish, frogs.

It's a marine bacteria.

We're examining the contents
of Gerry's stomach.

Gerry had just eaten a meal.

Forensic guys
are testing the leftovers.

I took it to him.

From where?

The trolley. It had his name on.
He's allergic to peanuts.

Who would have handled the tray?

The kitchen staff
and kitchen porters.

They're supplemented by ward porters,
we're short-staffed.

It goes straight on to the wards?

- If possible.
- Meaning?

The ward hostesses
cover more than one ward.

- Ward hostess?
- Tea lady.

So it could have sat in the corridor

unattended.

Yes.

Gerry Whyte, 22, junkie parents.

Let down by the system
since the day he was born.

On the streets since he was 1 4.

He was alive on that lab table,
unable to communicate

and he heard his own postmortem.

He was in our care

and we failed him.

It seemed feasible that the first
two deaths were connected to the riot.

The most obvious person responsible
for ordering the killing has been Meti.

But now, Meti's best mate
has been killed.

Meti was aware that Gerry's allergy
meant he got his own labelled meal.

And if Meti knew, what's the betting
Mrs. Meti also knew?

She didn't seem surprised when we
mentioned the assault on Leo Symons.

And Gina Meti is desperate
to get her husband home.

I want a 24-hour surveillance
on her.

Get authority for a phone intercept.

Who visited him
in the last 24 hours?

Governor Houseman.

He visited both the injured officers
and prisoners yesterday morning.

Establish a time.

The consultant, Henderson?

What do we know about him?
Is he connected with the prison?

Can I have a word, Mr. Henderson?

Mr. Henderson?

Do you have, or have you had
any connection with the prison?

What, do I have a criminal record?
Haven't you checked?

It's a simple question,
Mr. Henderson.

I expect nothing less.

Have you ever been to the prison
as a visitor, a doctor?

No.

Why are you so reluctant
to talk to me?

Time goes faster
when you're getting older.

I don't want to squander any of it.

We'll ask people
who formed the statistics,

Ieague tables for the Department
of Health and the local authority.

If you could just wait
until I can get ahold of Clare.

I'm a police officer in a murder enquiry,
just give me them.

Your consultant, Mr. Henderson.

His mortality rate?

Henderson's been up
in front of the GMC.

He was ordered to re-train
for a year

before being allowed to operate again
unsupervised.

His daughter was killed
in a drink-driving accident.

His marriage ended,
obviously his work suffered.

Now, after 1 2 months,
the GMC put him back on.

- He is an extremely--
- He's been losing patient after patient.

Nine out of the 21
he operated on last month died.

I do the averages quarterly.

If you were doing your job properly,
you'd be doing them daily.

- Be careful.
- Break that up, Meti.

- I never get to hug her. Understand?
- Meti.

Do you know
how to interpret medical data?

What do you imagine?

The death of a patient

on an operating table, during an
elected procedure to remove a bunion

is the same as that of a patient
with chronic renal failure?

- Mister--
- I'm talking to the monkey.

Three men have died
in your custody.

And you dare to suggest
that I'm an incompetent butcher?

You are a dangerous woman.

Completely insane.

I know she plays tennis.

She gets tickets for Wimbledon.

And she's adopted.

Do you talk about her family?

Not to her colleagues,
not as far as I know.

Why don't we talk about things?

We feel ashamed,

and we feel guilty.

The degree of control she exhibits

when discussing the riot
does appear unnatural.

What can I do?

Stop asking her questions.

You sent her to me.

I'll take care of her.

I shouldn't be allowing myself
to do this.

To do what?

Seeing you.

- But I did.
- You gave me back my life.

I missed you.

I missed you too.

It doesn't feel like 1 1 years.

No, it doesn't.

Next time you see Kate,

can you ask her
how many gunshots there were?

I just wanted to say

how sorry--
How really sorry I am about Gerry.

You'll pay.

One way or another, you'll pay.

How was your counsellor?

She didn't like me.

I could tell as soon as I walked in.

But she has a good reputation.

I got the impression
that she was judging me.

What if she thinks I'm not fit?

That's it, I'm off the case.
My whole career is ruined.

Why would she be judging you?

Well, that's her job, isn't it?
To trap me.

What right has she got
to go rummaging around in my brain?

Well, it's hard to talk about yourself.

It makes me angry.

I never used to be angry,
I was always in control of my life.

And now, I'm surrounded
by these stupid, stupid people

who think they're so clever.

Henderson, Mrs. Meti,

Dad.

"Business is always good
for a good builder."

What does that mean?
It's just words to push you away.

Sorry.

You've been through
a terrible ordeal.

You can't pretend
it hasn't happened.

You got to promise me,

you'll carry on with the counsellor.

Governor Houseman's wife
reported him missing at 6..30.

Houseman rang, said
he was on his way to the hospital

to visit the prisoners,
then he'd be home.

The wife stayed up until 1 2,
then she went to bed.

When she woke up,
he still wasn't back.

- Houseman drive a car?
- Yeah, a navy Laguna apparently.

Okay, okay, check the car park.

- Control.
- Copy,

Found blue Laguna.

CCTV picked up
Governor Houseman

heading towards the rear entrance
at 1 0..37 p.m.

His car is still in the car park.

Excuse me.

Ambulances don't use this door.

- Why the sign?
- It's for the waste trucks.

Once in the day, once at night.

Why Houseman?

Same thing.
Corruption, events in the jail.

Victim didn't die in the hospital.
Wasn't an inmate.

It's not the same thing, doctor.

The macabre method of death,
it's pretty consistent.

These killings are opportunistic.

They haven't been planned
months in advance.

Why doesn't he or she

just shoot them through the head,
why go to this trouble?

Maybe shooting
is too good for them.

Suggesting what about the killer?

They are very angry
about something.

Okay.

So is it credible? All this is about

conditions in the prison?

All right.

Suspects.

Sal Meti and his wife.

Are they together or separately
organising these killings?

Mrs. Meti was allowed
to visit Meti yesterday

on compassionate grounds.

Surveillance report she then sat in a car
in the hospital car park for three hours.

She didn't leave until well after
the waste trucks had come and gone.

She contracted someone else
to do the killings.

She waited until she was sure
the job had been done.

Why didn't she go to a bar
for an alibi?

She's arrogant, she's taunting us.

She thinks
we won't be able to establish a link

between her
and who she got to do the job.

Go through her old client list.

See if there's any likely villain
who would kill for money.

Henderson was also
in the building earlier.

We had a bit of a run-in with him.

- What about?
- I had the run-in with him.

He wasn't happy
that I've been checking up on him.

I murdered the governor,

I killed Gerry.

Is that what you think?

Your wife had several very public rows
with the governor.

He was dangerous, incompetent.

Gina would do anything
to protect you.

She wants you home.

No.

That's insane.

How long have you actually
spent with her?

You've never stayed
in the same house,

you've never slept in the same bed.

How do you know
what she's capable of?

We're soul mates.

She loves me.

Love can make us do
some extraordinary things.

Maybe she loves you too much.

Only too aware of the sacrifices
she's made.

If Gina's in trouble,

Iet me help.

If you want to help, Metcalfe,

you get me out of here.

Anywhere.

I don't care,

just somewhere I don't feel afraid.

I'll try.

I want a list ofr every patient staying
or attending in this hospital,

Deliveries are to be supervised.

I wanna see the files of all staff
employed in this building.

Doctors, nurses, technicians,

Iab assistants, porters, cleaners.

As you'll appreciate,

I have no option but to close
this hospital to new admissions.

Visiting is banned, except
for the families of the terminally ill.

Any patients that you believe
are fit to go home

must be discharged.

If you feel you cannot continue
to work under these conditions,

please discuss this
with the management.

However,

I would like to stress

that the victims have been confined

to those people who had connections
with the prison.

We have no reason at this time
to believe

that staff or other patients
are at risk.

In the prison,

the moment before you thought
you were going to die,

what do you remember?

Nothing.

And when you heard the gunshot?

Gunshots.

Sorry, was there more than one?

There were two.

And when you heard them,

what did you feel?

I thought,

"Now we have backup.

The situation is contained."

That's all you felt?

Are you trying to trick me?

Why would I do that?

You've had it in for me
since we started.

You're a control freak.

You could be mad for all I know.

Is that what you're afraid of?

You think you're going mad?

Kate became very upset.

It's my opinion she's not fit for duty.

You only had two sessions with her,

Are you questioning my judgement?

I'm asking for more time.

Time fror what?

I'm not going to fight with you.

My report will be with the commander
in the morning,

I have to go.

Good night, Red,

Can I help you?

Susan.

Hello.

Would you like to come in?

How would you like to do this?

Yes.

No.

I'm sorry.

I can't divulge that.

He loves you very much.

Hello?

Hello?
