- Hi! I'm Rebecca.
- Nice to meet you.

- It's nice to meet you!
- I'm Ja'Kya. Nice to meet you!

- Have a seat, love.
- Thank you.

So, tell me a little bit
about you and Terence.

We went to elementary, middle,
and high school together.

Aw!

But we've never dated.

I reached out to him
on Facebook, and then,

he confessed to me
that he liked me.

And what was
your response?

At first, it was like,
"No way."

I just always see him
as like a brother.

So after that, he did ask,

can he come
and hang out with me,

and it just felt
so natural.

He was so respectful.
He was such a gentleman.

I've never had
a man in my life

who was so consistent.

Yeah.

Explain to me the timing
where you feel like,

"Okay, I want to propose
right now, because..."

Terence and I have been
together for three years,

and I'm a fitness and wellness
spa/studio owner.

- Okay.
- So when he came along,

he bootstrapped me, like,

- "Whatever you need me to do.
- Mm-hmm.

Whatever you need from me.
Just let me know." Like...

- And so, he was like a business partner.
- Right.

So this is how
you have fallen

- head over heels in love.
- Oh, yeah.

He was like,
"I believe you to do this."

- Right.
- So, funding it, personally being a first

investor in, like,
doing this for you?

- I won't question it.
- Right.

- So, he did that for me.
- Wow.

He used his own personal
investments to help me,

so he was like, "You know,

we might not be able
to get married this year.

If you're cool with it,
then here it is."

He put us
on the back burner...

- Right.
- ...for my vision, and I'm just like,

- Oh, God.
- Oh, my. Right.

There's not a lot of people
that will put what they want...

- Your dreams...
- Yeah!

- ...before...
- Yeah.

- ...we even become husband and wife.
- Yeah. Right.

- To do that dream...
- Yeah.

...will put your entrepreneurial dreams
before that.

I want to propose because
he definitely fulfilled

like, my dream
for getting our gyms.

I just want to do something
to surprise him,

and thank him
in the best way I can,

and I think this is...
This is it.

- He is truly a li partner to me.
- Yeah.

I've never had that.

Does he have any idea about
what's about to come at him?

No. He thinks that we're doing
a gala for the business.

- Grand opening, over the top...
- Gala.

- Yes.

- A big party.

The Fitness Empire was founded
on women's empowerment.

We made a plan
and executed it.

Ja'Kya's most definitely

I love busting your butt.

She's been a boss since I've known her.

We're still got room
for improvement.

- Always, right?
- Absolutely.

So, you guys have obviously
talked about marriage.

- Oh, yeah.
- Has Terence proposed?

- No.
- No?

- No.
- When you propose,

how confident are you

about getting a yes?

Ooh, um...

Um, 85%.

What would be the reason
to think he would say no?

I think that just
the deception

- of keeping a secret from him...
- Yeah.

...and not being a part
of the process.

Your families.
Are they traditional?

His family
is more traditional.

His mom and dad
have been married

- for decades on decades, you know?
- Okay.

His dad will not be here
for health reasons,

so you know, it's just
safer to have him home.

Yeah.

And, me and my biological father
just connected this year.

I'm really not sure
how he's gonna respond.

How long had it been

since you had seen him,
met him, talked to him?

I hadn't seen him
in over two decades.

I did my own, like,
reconnecting with him...

- Okay. You found him.
- ...so it was my original decision.

Yeah.

It came out to be a very, very positive
experience for me.

Do you think that your father
coming back into your life

contributed to you having
enough confidence to feel

like you're ready
to marry Terence?

Really, I think so.

Because one of the things
I think happens when we begin

to contemplate family,

you start to think
about your relationships.

It begins to make you
question things,

maybe in a way that you
haven't always been

- that intentional about...
- Right.

...but it makes you get
more serious about that.

Right.

Right.

And also, it makes you want

to heal relationships...

Yes.

...to be able to be closer
to the people you love,

- Yeah.
- So, I think that makes sense.

Ja'Kya's a boss babe.

She's smart, she's ambitious.

And this process
of proposing to Terence

is challenging for her
in several ways.

One, she's independent.

She's not used to being
interdependent,

and in my opinion,
she's also dealing

with abandonment issues,
and father issues,

which is why she's
so fiercely independent,

and not wanting
to have to rely

on other people,
because she's afraid

that people will let her down,
