Man from Atlantis (1977–1978): Season 1, Episode 7 - Hawk of Mu - full transcript

Schubert's tracking of a mysterious power source causes a blackout, at the center of which, Mark discovers an ancient statue of a hawk. When he rescues Schubert's daughter Juliette from drowning, the villain learns of the hawk and steals it to discover the secret of its power.

You're an amateur,
Mr. Havergal, you're fired.

Now the rest of
you, listen to me.

Nobody's listening to you
from here on in, fat man.

I pay your salary.

Mark, are you telling me there
are water-breathing people

like yourself?

No, they breathe air.

Imagine what will
happen to broadcasting

all over the world once I get
those crystals into a satellite.

What I have told you is true.

Prophet says, lie!

Good afternoon gentlemen.

I'm glad to see you all
looking so happy and anxious.

Mr. Havergal,
what's our position?

15 degrees 40 north, 120
degrees west, Mr. Schubert.

Any signs of the crystals yet?

A mountain of crystals
under the water?

No, sir, no sign at all.

You're beginning to sound
dubious, Mr. Havergal.

Even after all the research
I've had my people do

on this place, that's a pity.

That's a pity.

I guess I'm just a skeptic.

But if there were
something so sparkling,

someone else would
have found it by now.

I wonder how often
Columbus heard that.

Conrad, what's the readout
on the crystal locator?

Up 14 millibars.

You see, all those technatic
crystals in one place.

How's our
communications holding up?

Almost out.

Getting worse and worse.

Isn't that splendid?

Imagine what will
happen to broadcasting

all over the world once I get
those crystals into a satellite.

Look at this, the crystal
locator is going off

the end of the dial.

All ahead full!

You all right, Mr. Schubert?

I'm fine.

I just want to know
what we ran into.

Just a moment, sir, I'll check.

It's a force field of some kind.

Isn't that interesting?

You wanted to know
why no one has beat

us here before, now you know.

It still doesn't get us through.

No, it doesn't.

Apparently, we'll have
to depend on our old

friend Mark Harris, once again.

Call that babysitting,
he could be halfway

to Hawaii by this time.

His flipper's not
yet fully healed.

Even Elizabeth thought
a break like that'd mean

he'd lose that flipper.

Mark, that's incredible.

Thank you, c.W.

But you did not come down here
just to check on Baxter and me.

15 degrees 40 north,
120 degrees west.

Do those coordinates
mean anything to you?

Mid-pacific, southwest
of the Hawaiian chain.

Something significant
going on there?

Elizabeth just picked
up a report of some

Unusual phenomenon.

It might be nothing,
she thinks it could be

a magnetic storm or some
kind of seismic disturbance.

What was she doing checking
that area in the first place?

I asked her to.

That is not your
usual function, c.W.

Unless, of course
Washington asked you to.

Intelligence thinks
an old friend of yours

is in that neighborhood.

Schubert.

I see.

And they want to
know if he's responsible

for those disturbances
you mentioned.

In a nutshell.

Since you are not
referring to the almond

or any other such tree,
I can assume you are

using an idiomatic
expression which can be

translated out to mean, exactly.

Exactly.

We must activate the cetacean.

Elizabeth's already
down there waiting for you.

This is complete, run
it through the computer.

Channels.

Now you operate
on your own level.

- It must be the same down there.
- How?

Well, the head shark
would never think of...

There is no such
thing as the head shark.

Well give 'em time.

- Hi Elizabeth.
- Take care of things, c.W.

Count on it.

Now fill her in on what I
told you about channels.

She can use it too.

Don't worry about
Baxter, I'll take care of him.

I'll get him a job
at the Pentagon.

Are we ready to depart?

Yes, we're all stations ready.

Hatch is secured, proceed.

Cetacean to seabase.

Beginning departure procedure.

Roger, cetacean,
disengaging walk through.

Verification seabase,
walk through disengaged.

Inaugurating computer control.

Stand by to activate gantry.

All systems green, cetacean.

Seagate opening.

We have landing
lights and monitor.

Bow lights on.

Gantry into out position.

Locked in seabase.

Gantry release, 10 seconds.

Amber lights.

Five, four.

Release, releasing.

Gantry unlocked, seabase.

Confirmed cetacean,
set your engines

for all ahead, slow.

All ahead, slow.

Seagate closing procedure.

You're on your own.

Good luck, people.

See you back at basehouse.

Computer ready
for course insert.

Yes, destination is 15 degrees
40 north, 120 degrees west.

15 by 40 by 120, yes, sir.

One of these days, I'm going to
have someone finish this piece,

matter of fact, I may
do it myself, what is it?

We picked up a blip, deep.

- How deep?
- Over 3,500 feet.

Too deep for a whale.

But not for the cetacean.

Right on time, aren't they?

We'll need the
scanners from here on.

Extending scanners.

Pick up anything?

Nothing.

Continue cautiously.

All ahead, slow.

Well, maybe
intelligence was wrong.

Maybe schubert isn't
in this sector after all.

Reef ahead.

Looks like we take
the long way around.

Heat sensors.

Online.

To the right.

No sign of entry.

- Wind.
- I see it.

To the right again.

Ahead slowly.

It's pretty narrow.

Clearance calculation two
and a half feet, either side.

See something?

Scanners aren't picking
up anything unusual.

Wait a minute, my
master control looks like

it's doing a Mexican hat dance!

Listen to this
interference I'm getting.

Not your usual static is it?

It's coming through
on all frequencies.

Please stop the ship.

Stopping.

Mark?

I would like to
send out a probe.

Set probe for launch.

Probe set, sir.

Activate.

Launching probe.

Chart on screen.

Probe on screen.

Starboard deflection.

Calculating.

It must be a pretty
solid mass out there.

The equivalent of a brick wall.

And an object the size of the
cetacean cannot get through.

- Activate.
- Activating.

He found a way in.

Elizabeth, do you read?

- Do you hear that?
- Turn up the gain more.

There isn't any more.

Get those coordinates.

Already down.

All right, we're
on our way at last,

thanks to our web
fingered friend.

We'll need the deep sea
scuba equipment I had

the science department
come up with.

Standing by.

Something's
approaching the barrier.

Schubert.

This whole thing is
beginning to look like schubert

set us up.

And there's no way
I can warn Mark.

No way I can get through.

Wait, I will not
harm you, please!

I will not hurt you!

I mean you no harm.

Some think atlantian.

It is not needed.

It is not necessary, I
will go where you tell me!

You are looking at
an intuitive genius

you know that, Mr. Havergal?

Had you anticipated this
bubble would be occupied?

No but I put it down
as a contingency.

Who do you suppose keeps
that water up there, Mr. Havergal?

Have you given that any thought?

Plastic dome?

Balance of power more like,

water presses in
with x amount of force,

and is met by an
equal or greater force.

What do you suppose is
the source of all that power?

You think it's the crystals?

Indeed I do.

That makes them a
million times more valuable

than even I anticipated.

All the money in the
universe, all the power.

And you think these
creatures are just going

to let you come in
and take them, huh?

Someone hasn't been listening
to what I've been saying.

Observe.

Flashlight?

The armament in case the
contingency I mentioned turned

out to be fact.

Doesn't look like a
weapon, what does it do?

Turns heroes into a
cheap source of labor.

Elizabeth?

Elizabeth, can you hear me?

What the heck is wrong
with this connection?

Same thing that's keeping
us from contacting Mark.

Heavy interference
around here, c.W.

We think it has something
to do with a force field

we almost ran into.

I can hardly hear you,
what, what, force field?

The government doesn't
have some secret project going

on out here does it?

If it does they didn't
mention it to me.

Listen, Elizabeth, this
transmission worries me.

Washington thinks schubert's
working on some scheme

to blackout world broadcasts.

Now this could be the
first evidence of that.

Any idea what
schubert's using to do it?

You're closer to finding that
out there than we are here.

I will not try to run.

I am called Mark Harris.

You are come, why?

To find an evil man
named schubert.

Evil?

Schubert.

His presence will bring
great sadness and pain.

You will bring sadness and pain.

Truth...

Test.

Truth be told.

I am not afraid of the truth.

Taking him inside.

What would you
call that building?

Looks like some
sort of a meeting hall.

I think it's a
church, or shrine.

Whatever it is it sure
seems to be packing them in.

The prophet is told.

We are proceed.

Stay.

From sky you come?

From the water.

Ship yours?

The cetacean.

Reason.

In search of a man named
schubert, as I told you.

In search of crystal.

No, what I have
told you is truth.

Prophet says lies.

That is what schubert
is after, the crystals.

Do yourself the favor of
suppressing any cry of alarm.

It is you who would take.

You, Mark Harris.

I'm right again.

People in this place would
be susceptible to light.

Direct, intense, concentrated
light with an accent

on the ultraviolet
side of the spectrum.

I think it'd be a good idea
if she took us in there now.

No, shrine.

It's a shrine.

However, I can conceive of
no place where Mark Harris

may be admitted and I may not.

Introduce us to your
people, my dear.

The name is schubert.

Schubert could be here now.

Do you scan your skies?

Do you watch your mountains?

Sound advice, but too late.

Cooperation is not a request,
it's an absolute necessity.

I thought so.

Any creature of the water

would naturally react badly
to light as concentrated as this.

Shall I dehydrate
your body, Mark?

Turn you back into dust?

I can with this.

I can blind you too.

You already have.

Mark, they let you food.

You see!

It is a membrane in my inner
eye I did not know was there.

You do something
soon, Mark please?

The way to the sea is being
watched, is there another way?

If Mark leave, he'll burrow
deep, how can he help?

I must get some of these
crystals back to my submersible

for analysis.

We have to know what
these stones mean to schubert

so we can counteract
his intentions.

Hey, what's going on down there?

He can feed himself.

Just stick a spoon in
his fist and get going.

Go to beneath
shrine behind statue.

Descend in grotto,

find pool to sea.

Hey, I said get up here, now!

Next time I give you
an order you don't jump,

you're going to be in serious
trouble, you understand?

Mr. Havergal.

Mr. Havergal, there's no
profit in gratuitous cruelty.

These people give me the creeps.

They must envision the opposite.

Obviously we give
them the creeps too.

Which leads me to wonder
how many men we've managed

to sneak through
the force field.

Last thing we need at this
point is a slave rebellion.

We can get a new
bunch through easier now.

It's nowhere near as hard to
get through as it was before.

How do you know?

Did Conrad set up that
interference override?

He just got it working a
couple of minutes ago.

You can talk directly
to the ship now.

Remind me to give
Conrad a bonus.

What are you looking at?

Sky looking like that
makes me nervous.

With reason.

The more crystals we remove
the less power there is to keep

the water from
pouring in on top of us.

We're not taking
that many are we?

To do what I want to do
to control the airwaves

all around this planet,

yeah I'm going to cut
it as close as I can.

Don't worry, Mr. Havergal,
the crew will make the last runs.

The two of us will be
supervising from the sub.

Whatever Mark is doing in
there it sure hasn't helped

the signal any.

We don't know what
he's doing in there, c.W.

We don't even know
what "In there" Is.

Did you do a heat scan?

Um-hmm, three of them.

I know the temperature
of the force field.

Interested?

If it's germane.

The point, c.W. Schubert's
people have been

funneling through for
twenty minutes now.

Elizabeth, schubert's
mothership sounds like

the prospero pacific.

Do you have any idea
how many men that holds?

I still say they can get
through, we can get through.

The Navy wants no one
else to leave the cetacean.

Is that clear?

Then they're on their way?

Yes, but they won't commit
to a definite rendezvous time.

- Hey.
- What?

Am I just getting used to
all this interference or is it,

is the transmission
clearing up a little?

It does seem somewhat
better now, doesn't it?

Stop, stop him!

Get him!

- He's not here!
- Well, look for him!

Mr. Schubert.

There's some kind
of a tunnel down there.

It's a tunnel, search!

Get down there.

You two guys check that tunnel.

Can't find him, maybe
he went in there.

No maybe about it.

Feel free to get in
there and find out.

What is it?

Can't you feel it?

It's power.

Enough raw power to defy
the weight of the pacific ocean.

There he goes.

We lost him.

We lost him but look
what we've gained.

Dr. Merrill, I'm getting
a blip coming this way.

Squelch it up.

Camera six.

It's Mark.

Radio up room.

What's that?

This is what schubert is after.

You will need to analyze it.

What'd you do that for?

I need some at
schubert's submarine.

I need a fix on schubert's ship.

Squelching up.

Main monitor.

I must get to it at once.

Schubert's got fifty
armed men in scuba gear

going back and
forth from that vessel.

I must get this to the
people of killsborough deep.

Where?

It is called killsborough deep.

The people there are in mortal
danger, thanks to Mr. Schubert.

Mark are you telling me there
are water breathing people like

yourself living on
the bottom of the sea?

No, they breathe air.

Wait a minute.

They do not have a minute.

Mark is...

Mark betrayed us.

Break it up.

Mark!

Will you kids stop
gawking and get to work?

Spunk like that
ought to be rewarded.

I could use some
help in the grotto.

Hasn't that place collapsed yet?

It's on its way.

You have a new job.

Conrad calculates we
have a little less than half

an hour's worth of excavation
left before the bubble

becomes too dangerous
for essential personnel.

I'm telling you I don't like it.

Yes, Mr. Schubert?

Everything's ready for
receiving the crystals.

All right Conrad, I'll
contact you as soon as we're

ready to begin
transporting the lot.

Aye, aye, sir, standing by.

There, take a look at that.

Whoa, it's incredible.

Remember those
little crystal radio sets?

That's like comparing a stone
age ax to an atomic bomb.

You're right about that.

I'll patch it through to c.W.

All right, let's move
it down there, people.

Let's move it.

Get them moving down
there, hurry it up now.

Come on, come on, hurry it up.

Yes, Mr. Havergal?

Don't you think we're
cutting it a little close?

Wasn't risk taking
implied in our agreement?

Risk is one thing,
stupidity is another.

Mr. Havergal,

we have eleven minutes left.

Don't you have
confidence in Conrad?

Anybody can make a
mistake, don't you see

what's happening here?

Ok, I'll double check
his calculations.

This is schubert,
Conrad, come in.

What happened to that override?

One wonders.

Conrad, do you read?

Let's get out of here,
you got double the number

of crystals you're
ever gonna need.

This is schubert, Conrad,
I would appreciate a reply.

He cannot hear
you, Mr. Schubert.

It is foolish to try
and communicate.

And you, of course,
are going to tell me why.

I should think that
would be obvious.

He sabotaged the sub.

Or just it's ability
to communicate.

Are you willing to
stake your life on that?

An individual with your
kind of scruples wouldn't

destroy a submarine
with 150 men on it.

It was not necessary
to destroy the vessel.

I'll get the truth out of him.

Would you like to tell him
how long that would take?

More time than we have.

This is a bluff isn't it?

Either the ship is
there, or it is gone.

We still have our
scuba equipment.

With enough air to
cover the distance?

Who knows?

Might appeal to
the gambler in me.

I wonder what your crew
would think about gambling.

Give him the crystals.

Don't be ridiculous.

He wouldn't leave us
here with no refuge.

I know him too well.

I'm not going to take that
chance, give him the crystals.

I don't like people who whimper.

You're an amateur,
Mr. Havergal, you're fired.

Now the rest of
you, listen to me.

Nobody's listening to you
from here on in fat man!

I pay your salary.

What good is a salary if
you can't live to spend it?

We're putting those things
back, it's the only way

we're going to get
out of here alive.

You fools!

You know what kind of a fortune

you're letting this
alien bluff you out of?

The kind of power you could
have if you don't abandon me now?

Make yourself useful
captain nobody.

Remind me never to
play poker with you.

Grotto is completely
caved in by now.

If that's where you think
you're going you'll never make it.

All I have to do is get
the crystals to the dynamo.

The rest will follow.

I don't get it, why
would you rather take

your chances in the water?

It's very difficult to dominate
the world from an island

at the bottom of the ocean.

We have words for Mark.

Apologies.

And thanks.

We both thank.

We all thank you.

I, too, have apologies.

You were right, not knowing,

I brought schubert and
his men to your land.

We listen next time.

C.w. Was on the
line with Elizabeth.

He said he wanted
to talk to you as soon

as you got on board.

Mark's here, c.W.

Mark, about those crystals.

They are the exclusive
property of the people

of killsborough deep.

Oh fine, fine.

Have you any idea what
crystals like that could mean

to our defense effort?

It is impossible to get through
the force field to get any more.

Well, Elizabeth could
come up with something.

Oh, well, maybe not, c.W.

My instruments indicate that
the crystals themselves are

the power behind the force
and wow, we have nothing

that comes close
to counter-acting it.

Now, come on, you guys.
The government is very

interested in this
discovery and...

It is getting hard to
maintain contact, c.W.

This will have to wait until
we get back to the foundation.

Now wait a minute Mark,
if you think I'm going to buy

radio interference
this convenient, you...

Will you tell him what I
just did when we get back?

- I didn't see you do anything.
- Did you?

No, ma'am.

Not me.

Lay in a course for
home, full power.
