Man from Atlantis (1977–1978): Season 1, Episode 3 - Killer Spores - full transcript

The Cetacean is called upon to recover a space probe that crashes in the sea, and Mark soon learns that the probe is covered with thousands of tiny alien beings. They intend to learn all they can about the human race by invading host bodies and controlling them. Mark must return them to space before they destroy all humanity.

[Hawk screeches]

My place is just up
here and we could..

Converse more quietly?

Think of what a
union it would cement.

Schubert and Harris.

(Female #1) 'Help!'

[hawk shrieks

[explosion]

[Theme music]

[Music continues]

[Instrumental music]

[Music continues]

Open it up.

[Satellite dish whirring]

Switch on.

Yes, sir.

Show some excitement, Brent.

We may be making history today.

Yes, sir.

Right where you're sitting..

I can see the plaque.

"on this spot, the discovery
that ushered the world

"into the new age of
molecular infusion was made..

By me."

[chuckles]

Look at it.

[Beeping]

[Dramatic music]

We're getting something, sir.

Oh, we found it.

I told you it was there.

- Turn up the power.
- But, sir...

Brent, I pay you to be a
yes man. Be a yesman!

Y-Yes, man.

Uh, I mean, yes, sir.

[Dramatic music]

What the devil did you do?

Turned up the power,
like you told me.

Oh, Brent.

This is even bigger
than I thought.

Everything electrical is out.
Down to the storage batteries.

There isn't a car, a boat

moving in the affected area.

Everything electrical shut down

within an 80 mile radius.

Now, could you
imagine if that happened

in New York or Chicago, say?

Have they been able to
tell what's causing it yet?

No, one of the main
problems is communications.

And the center of
the disturbance, cw?

It's hard to tell exactly.

But as close as our
recon satellites can come

it's either just on or
just off the coast here.

[Birds chirping]

How peaceful it is, Brent.

Don't you wish it could
be like this all the time?

Well, yes, sir.

Here.

But if I were having
my tonsils out, i'd...

Gib.

I'm not a barbarian.

'There will of course be little'

enclaves of modern conveniences.

At my discretion.

Yes, sir.

But we have to find it first.

And we shall.

'Somewhere in those rocks.'

a cave, perhaps a niche.

'A vault.'

and all the power I deserve.

How will we get in there?

There's a way in.

There must be. All
you have to do is find it.

[Instrumental music on radio]

Mr. Schubert.

It's worn off,
just as I thought.

- Back to the laboratory, Brent.
- Yes, sir.

Don't forget your hand signal.

Oh.

That's good.

You'll be the best built
man at the office, Brent.

Work that gut out.

That's fine.

[Brent grunting]

Call from sea base.

Put it through, please.

(Cw) 'Elizabeth, Mark.'

both here, cw.

(Cw) 'Word from the island'

the power is back on.

(Elizabeth) 'How long ago?'

about as long as it
took to get word through.

You can approach as
close as you find feasible.

And hope that it
doesn't happen again.

(Cw) 'Good thought.'

do they have any idea
yet, what caused it?

No, they're still in the dark,
metaphorically speaking.

You have as good a
shot at it as anybody.

Thank you, cw. Cetacean out.

[Machine beeps]

Jane, do you have
the co-ordinates

to the center of the circle?

As close as the computer
can pinpoint them.

Patch them through
to the helmplease.

Jomo, get us there
as quickly as possible.

All ahead, full.

(Brent) You've done it
again. Well, Mr. Schubert...

What are you gibbering about?

You've got them here again.

Right on schedule.

- Who?
- The cetacean, sir.

Your friend Mark
Harris, it has to be.

Brimstone and damnation!

But you arranged for it.

You've tricked them again!

Haven't you?

You transcendental idiot.

Why would I want them meddling
on the strike of the century?

He might at least
have the courtesy

to let me be first at
my own discovery.

Get Mark Harris on the phone.

Wait a minute. Let's
not fly off the handle.

Despair may be
a little premature.

In the first place,
even Mark Harris

may not be able
to get into that vault.

Second, it may be
better not to tip our hand.

If they find out I'm involved,
it can only alert them.

They can't know yet
what they're dealing with.

And you know the
old saying, Brent.

What they don't
know can't hurt us.

[Laughing]

[Instrumental music]

- Elizabeth.
- Reading.

There is no
crevice in the rocks.

Do your instruments show

any apertures
within the formation?

Well, the radar scan shows

a series of cave like
fissures of various shapes.

They seem to lead
toward but not into..

A-a more geometric
central chamber.

Would you say they
are natural formations?

Well, it's hard to tell.

My best guess is that
the fissures are natural

but the chamber is not.

I will continue to search.

[Instrumental music]

I believe I've found
a way in, Elizabeth.

Are you gonna check it out?

Yes.

Well, we will maintain
contact as long as we can.

[Instrumental music]

[Music continues]

(Brent) 'He must have
found a way in, sir.'

'he's getting close.'

[music continues]

[Flame whooshing]

[Water dripping]

[Dramatic music]

[Music continues]

(Brent) 'What
do you think, sir?'

'will he go back
to the cetacean?'

(Mr. Schubert) 'Outrageous.'

Brent, you're a scientist.

Be logical.

Do you connect that
blackout with our scanner?

Uh, yes, sir.

Whatever that
thing is he is carrying

'our scanner must
have activated it.'

- how?
- I couldn't say, sir.

Not without experimenting.

Hmm, that's a
splendid idea, Brent.

Should have
thought of it myself.

Go ahead and experiment.

But he's got it in his hands.

Hasn't he?

We have the
location pin pointed.

If he should,
uh, pfft, drop it..

[Chuckles]

'...we'd just go in
and scoop it up.'

we don't know what
it would do to him, sir.

A scientist must
be willing to assume

certain risks.

This is one I think you and
I must be prepared to take.

Power on.

Yes, sir.

[Intense music]

[Music continues]

More power.

Yes, sir.

More power, Brent.

But we haven't given
it time to operate.

- It-it might...
- Yes, it might.

Let's find out before
he gets back to the ship.

- More power.
- Sir!

[Electricity crackling]

[Indistinct]

One word out of you, Brent

and the town motel in oxnard
is gonna make headlines.

No.

[Instrumental music]

[Music continues]

A stuffed bird?

It's not stuffed, cw.

But it doesn't appear
to be carved either.

Yeah, well, how old
would you say it is?

- Ten years, fifty, a hundred?
- Hard to tell.

I'll know better after
I've done a little testing.

Yeah, well, it's
probably an antiquity

and we won't be able
to take it out of the area

without permission.

I suppose not.

I feel like a puppy
with a prize bone.

If anybody tries to take it away
from me before I finish with it

I just may bite.

I hope it's worse
than your bark.

'Is Mark aboard?'

no, he's on the island.

Fresh fruit, bananas, mangoes.

'Fresh fruit, bananas, mangoes.'

[instrumental music]

That's him, missus.

Things are looking up.

Yeah, well, don't
let it go to your head.

It's strictly business.

And it's the kind of business
I'm extremely good at.

That's why he's picked you.

Strange old bird.

- Who?
- Schubert.

I gotta tell ya, I
never had to go

through that kind
of test before.

Yeah, well, forget
Mr. Schubert, missus.

There's your man.

'He wants to know'

'what he found in that vault..'

under the ocean.

Fascinating, aren't they?

I've often come
here to look at them.

(Missus) 'They must be
hundreds of years old.'

(Mark) 'I think thousands.'

(missus) 'Me, too.'

what do you suppose
those markings are?

It is writing.

Like hieroglyphics, but older.

Egyptian?

Lemurian.

This island stands on the center

of what once was the
ancient continent of mu.

Fascinating.

I've seen pictures
of it and they've...

Oh, I don't see
how you could have.

Mu disappeared into the ocean

long before the
invention of photography.

I mean paintings.

You know, how they
artist imagined it to be.

I wonder what it says.

It is an invocation to
the ancient gods of mu.

Fascinating.

Are you leaving?

Yes.

Oh, I'm terribly fascinated

with anything having
to do with the continents.

Would you mind if
I walked with you?

Please.

[Instrumental music]

This is so interesting.

I'm glad you like it.

Oh, I'd like to
hear all about it.

My place is just up here and
we could be more comfortable.

Well, I'm quite
comfortable, thank you.

'I meant..'

there's no one
there... And we could...

Converse more quietly?

(Mark) 'That would be nice.'

some other time, perhaps.

Do read those books I mentioned.

Goodbye.

Well, missus?

Struck out.

He's a live one.

But I actually believe..

He didn't know
what the score was.

It's hard to miss.

Maybe.

Anyway, would you
tell your Mr. Schubert

he'll never reach him this way?

[Instrumental music]

[Screams]

(Juliette) 'Help!'

help! Please, help.

'I can't swim.'

'help!'

[screams]

Help me. Please, help.

He..

Help!

[Screams]

Uh, help, uh, help me.

Oh..

[Coughing]

You went in after a hat?

It's the only one I
have that hides my face.

Why would you want to do that?

It was supposed to be funny.

Except, it's no joke.

I don't seem to have
much luck with people.

Especially men.

I think you are charming.

You're gonna make me cry.

That was not my intention.

I hate to cry, it
makes my eyes puffy.

[Chuckles]

What am I saying?

You're not making fun of me?

I do not make fun of people.

You poor man.

We're both a little
strange, aren't we?

In what way?

Mark, I want you
to meet my papa.

I really do not have much time.

Please, he'll be very grateful.

I think.

If it is important to you.

[Instrumental music]

Do you like it?

It is very beautiful, Juliette.

Don't let it put you off.

Down deep, I'm just like you.

Well, not like you,
but like other people.

Please wait here.

Papa!

[Humming]

Uh..

[Continues humming]

(Schubert) Mark, my boy.
What a pleasant surprise.

You couldn't be more welcome.

Do you two know..

Yeah, hmm..

I like him, papa.

I'm not going to do
anything against him.

Would I ask you to do
anything against him?

Hah, that boy's
like a son to me.

All I want from him
is what belongs to me.

What?

I'd rather you hear it
from him. He'll tell ya.

He took it out of my
vault under the ocean.

You have a vault
under the ocean?

Mm-hmm.

And someday, it'll all be yours.

Will you do it?

No.

Julie..

A daughter owes certain
things to her father.

Love, honor, obedience...

Let's talk about
what you owe me.

- I give you an allowance.
- Oh, that.

A child has to learn
the value of money.

Do you know what our
telephone bill was here last month?

We..

[Sighs]

We are speaking of loyalty.

Well, what do you want me to do?

It's obvious, he's
smitten with you

as any healthy
young man should be.

You are a perfect blossom.

Flutter your petals.

Find out what it was he
removed from my vault.

I know what it was.

- You know?
- He told me.

Oh, and now

like a dutiful daughter,
you're going to tell me.

No, papa. I won't.

Never.

That's my baby. You
keep an open mind.

[Dramatic music]

[Music continues]

Unbelievable.

A perfect fit.

As though it were
hermetically sealed.

That's an impossible balance.

[Music continues]

Stale, musty air.

You know, I'll bet
there's a different

chemical make-up in here.

Can you read it?

It is an invocation to the
hawk god as to what to do

when he emerges
in the after life.

Elizabeth.

[Music continues]

[Panting]

I cannot open it.

[Music continues]

Mark, the torches are going out.

It's a low level
of oxygen in here.

We're gonna run out in minutes.

We better put them out.

No, wait.

It said..."Counterforce."

Elizabeth, what is
meant by counterforce?

Counter weight.

A balance of forces of mass.

Did you touch anything or lean
on anything when you came in?

No, I don't think I, uh..

I was over here and
was talking to you..

Yes, I touched
somewhere around here.

[Music continues]

[Dramatic music]

[Music continues]

- Are you alright, Dr. Merrill?
- Yes.

Never been so glad to
get back to the ship before.

We must take a
closer look at the hawk.

Uh, I'm afraid that's
going to be difficult.

It's been confiscated.

(Schubert) Collectors.

Pillage the native artefact.

Robbing tombs, making
off with national treasures.

It's good to see at least
there's one piece safe

in its country of origin.

If I'd been able to
help just that much

I'll sleep the better for it.

How are we going to get it?

Rest easy, son.
We'll find a way.

I offered to buy the museum
but the sentimental fools

wouldn't sell it.

Brent, you're beginning
to attract attention.

Let's go.

(Schubert) 'Brent,
what do you suppose'

'the burly gentleman we
hired could do with that door?'

(Brent) 'Oh, Mr. Schubert.'

Juliette, I'm not
without worldly wisdom.

I have read about these things.

Were you sent here to seduce me?

What?

Women have been
used for that before.

- Like madam hari.
- Who?

The famous spy.

Were you sent by your father
to get information from me?

Mata hari.

- What?
- The name of the spy.

Oh. Thank you.

I swear I wasn't.

I believe you.

[Sighs]

But I betrayed you.

You did?

I told my papa this afternoon

what you told me about the hawk.

I see.

Do you hate me?

No.

I wouldn't blame you if you
refuse to sit down with me.

Juliette, if you have
any influence with him

you must convince him
what he's about to do

is a dangerous undertaking.

You don't know what it's
like being his daughter.

No, I do not.

He doesn't listen to me.

Do you know what his plans are?

You must tell me.

You're asking me to betray him.

He will be in great
danger if he attempts

to use the power of the hawk.

- He will?
- The world will be in danger.

Juliette, it is the truth.

I heard him say he's planning
to steal it from the museum.

- When?
- Tonight.

We must stop him.

How are you gonna stop it?

I do not know.

[Indistinct]

[Explosion]

[Tires screeching]

(Mark) 'Juliette,
this is wrong.'

(Juliette) 'You want
the hawk, don't you?'

- yes, of course.
- Well, then let's go get it.

But this is stealing. It makes
us no better than your father.

Everybody's better than papa.

Perhaps, if we spoke to
him, explained the danger..

Mark, papa's a mule. He
needs to be taught a lesson.

I have no desire to
teach anyone a lesson.

I know what I'm doing.

Are you sure the window's open?

Yes, it's my room.

Mark?

This is like we are eloping.

Except backwards.

[Dramatic music]

[Crickets chirping]

I believe the
technical phrase for it

is breaking and entering.

- Papa!
- Hush, child.

Your papa is
here to protect you.

Mr. Schubert.

Oh, the brass of the scoundrel

calling me by name.

Papa!

You caught him in
the act, constable.

Breaking into the premises
and assaulting my daughter.

It's Mark Harris.

Who?

The man's a cad or worse.

The law must take its course

must it not, constable?

That it must, Mr. Schubert.

Now come along,
captain. Come nicely.

You're under arrest.

[Dramatic music]

Worry not.

I'll stand by ya.

(Schubert) 'Ask yourself, Brent'

what is the source of
the power in that bird?

How did it get
buried in those rocks?

We're not far
from easter island.

No doubt you're familiar
with what the magazines call

the mystery of that island?

Who carved those
gigantic statues?

Who placed them
where they stand?

What inconceivable engines
moved those massive wings?

Oh, Mr. Schubert.
That's almost poetry.

Science and poetry

at some higher
level, they unite.

- Can you remember all that?
- Yes, sir.

You see that it gets
typed up and filed.

Continue the experiment.

I'm off on a mercy
mission to an old friend.

Yes, sir.

Captain..

You're not eating your food.

It is not food I need.

- It is water.
- What's the matter?

You don't hear anything
about the water shortage?

Please.

The trouble is, captain

you do not read
the tourist's folders.

[Clicks tongue]

'This island water'

'is bad for the tourists.'

you think I want to get in
some kind of trouble, huh?

(Schubert) 'Constable.'

good to see ya.

Mr. Schubert.

Resting well, Mark?

Mr. Schubert, I must
speak to you about the hawk.

[Laughs]

First things first.

I'm a father
before I'm a friend.

I'd like to know
what your intentions

are towards my daughter.

My intentions?

You must know you've
seriously compromised her.

Do you intend to do
the honorable thing?

What is the honorable thing?

[Chuckles]

Marrying her, of course.

I'm prepared to be very
generous as a father-in-law.

Mr. Schubert, we...
We're not in love.

There's no talk of marriage.

Think of what a
union it would cement.

Schubert and Harris.

Marine enterprises.

(Schubert) 'What things
we could do together.'

what do you say,
son? Is it a deal?

Mr. Schubert, we are
wasting time talking of this.

I must warn you about the hawk.

Mark, I don't
appreciate being put off

when I am offering you
my hearth and home.

You know, you're
not looking very well.

(Schubert) 'Kinda
dried out, if you ask me.'

eh, we'll talk again
in a few hours.

You may be feeling differently.

Has he been behaving?

- He's been asking for water.
- Oh.

Tell me, how often
are prisoners permitted

to bathe in this excellent jail?

Oh, once a month, maybe twice.

That often?

Well, as you see,
he's real clean.

Keep up the good
work, constable.

Thank you, Mr. Schubert.

Mr. Schubert, please.

[Door clangs]

[Instrumental music]

[Panting]

You said you'd let me in.

Local calls are three minutes.

After that, you must
deposit another coin.

Do you understand
me, missus, hmm?

[Sighs]

[Clanking]

Mark, I'm so ashamed.

It is not your fault.

I was outside that window.

I heard everything he said.

I'm sorry.

Juliette, I need water.

Here's some coffee.

I need large amounts
of water for my body.

You are strange, aren't you?

Juliette, do you see that hose?

(Mark) 'Can you
reach it for me?'

you don't want that,
that's what they use

to punish troublesome prisoners.

[Panting]

You know, I have a great
deal of respect for you.

And that I think you're
an excellent person.

(Juliette) 'Mark,
stop it. Help!.'

[indistinct screaming]

Help! Mark! Mark, stop!

Help! Help me!

'He's gone crazy!'

[screaming]

Stop it, Mark, stop it, Mark!

(Juliette) Help!

[Screaming]

Alright, that's enough.

[Bars creaking]

[Intense music]

[Music continues]

[Phone buzzing]

Brent, I am in the
middle of lamb julienne.

Is this more important
than lamb julienne?

Yes, sir, Mr. Schubert.

- You'd better come out here.
- What the devil for?

Please..

Mr. Schubert?

Brent?

Brent? Brent?

Twit!

[Intense music]

Brent, I'm sick and
tired of your squeakin'.

Now, this had better be good.

Stand up, I'm not
going to hit you.

[Whimpering]

Brent, turn it off.

- Make it stop!
- I can't.

Hit it with a stick.

[Whimpers]

[Thunder cracks]

Mr. Schubert!

[Whimpering]

[Hawk screeching]

[Gasps]

[Thunder cracks]

[Screeching]

[Gasps]

[Screeching]

[Chirping]

[Chirping]

[Screeching]

[Screeching]

[Screeching]

[Music continues]

[Chirping]

[Screeching]

[Screeching]

[Explosion]

[Screeching]

Mark, what happened?

The energy was the
life force of the bird

contained in the
band around its leg.

That stuffed bird?

It was not stuffed, Juliette.

Where is it?

It has flown away.

Mark, are you
sure you're alright?

I am fine.

And you?

Well, my car
stopped, I had to run

the last couple of blocks.

I'm glad you are here.

Are you?

I would like to apologize

for what I had to do to you

in the jail cell.

It's alright. I'm used to it.

Will I see you again?

I hope so, Juliette.

(Cw) 'Mark, you there?'

yes, cw, this is Mark.

- 'Is Elizabeth there, too?'
- Yes.

(Cw) 'Here's some of the
facts on the second blackout.'

it covered an area almost

four times as large
as the first one.

(Cw) 'Complete
blackout of all forms'

'of electrical energy.'

we felt it here, cw.

Fortunately, it was over
very fast, a matter of minutes.

No pun intended,
but can either of you

cast light on why it
began or why it ended?

It is as Elizabeth
has told you, cw.

A power in the hawk.

Complicated by
whatever schubert did to it.

Mr. Schubert is no longer
in possession of the hawk.

That's a good thing.

Now, we're all anxious to
get our hands on that thing.

(Cw) 'Find out the
source of it's power.'

'do you know where
the hawk is, Mark?

No, cw, I do not.

[Instrumental music]

Jomo, take us home.

[Theme music]
