Man from Atlantis (1977–1978): Season 1, Episode 13 - C.W. Hyde - full transcript

Hey, you want to go to work?

The carnival?

That's not exactly my line.

He talked.

And you still ain't
seen no bubbles, right?

Get out!

Aw, we're going to
put you on tonight as

the incredible
man from Atlantis!

Arthur, get him!

I thought you'd never ask.

I would like to see you tonight.

Just in case you get
absent-minded again.

I'm sorry, gentlemen, but
you must stay with the group.

Now, if you will look off
shore, you will see an upwelling.

That white water out there
is the outtake of the plant's

cooling system.

Just beyond the break
water is the intake pipe.

The pipe is eight
feet in diameter,

and the water runs at a
rate of six feet a second.

Now, if you will all follow me,

I'll show you the
collection basin.

The collection basin
is below sea-level,

and the water enters
through gravity flow.

At this end of the basin, you
will see four steel screens,

which stop foreign objects from
entering into these large pumps.

It's going on
two-and-a-half minutes.

It's a long run, moxie.

At least a quarter of a mile.

Well, he said he could
make it, let him prove it.

What if he doesn't, make it?

Then Arthur, we get
ourselves another swimmer.

As the heated water
leaves the building,

it flows through two channels
around the collection basin.

And again, by gravity,
returns to the sea.

This generating station
holds a safety record,

representing 10 continuous years

without loss
work-time accidents,

which the department's
research shows to be

a national record.

Four minutes, fifteen,
it don't look good.

He said he could make five.

Look, the kid's supposed to
be some kind of an olympic

champion, right?

If he can't hold his
breath that long, who can?

Well, if he's not out
in, what, one minute,

we'll assume that he's had it.

Well, that's Henry.

He overrated himself.

Remind me never to
shake hands with you.

Mark.

This was a distance swimmer
named Henry stockwood.

He is dead?

Drowned.

A distance swimmer, drowned?

He wasn't just a swimmer, Mark.

He was working
for the government.

The tone of your voice suggests
he did not die accidentally.

They found his body
floating in the collection basin,

at the water and power plant.

Murder is something
humans do so casually, c.W.

It makes me feel sad and sorry.

Most of us feel that way, Mark.

Believe me, if
you'll come with me,

I'll show you the rest of
the information we have.

- Punch it up, please.
- Yes, sir.

This is part of
stockwood's last report.

Apparently he made contact
with a carnival character.

Moxie, bills himself
as the magnificent.

He is a midget, three-foot-five,

if he is an inch.

Scan to the bottom
of the page, please.

There, where stockwood
says they offered him

a third of the take,

for joining the caper
they were planning.

- A caper?
- That is a robbery?

A big one.

Unfortunately, stockwood
didn't have time to go

into any great detail.

So now...

You are requesting
that I take the place

of this agent swimmer?

Washington is requesting you,
and it would be a special favor.

Personally, I want you
to know that I don't think

you owe them any special favor.

C.w., you said that you
are disturbed by the death

of stockwood also.

It disturbs me.

But the fact is, you're
not a policeman.

You're not even completely
comfortable in this society yet.

What would I have to do?

Well, Washington says
they've come up with a way

to get you in with moxie,

and whoever he's working with.

Once you find out
what the target is,

how they're planning
to take it over,

you notify the police,
probably through me.

And that's that.

That does not seem so
difficult an assignment, c.W.

These men are responsible
for one murder already.

They need a distance
swimmer, most likely under water.

Who else besides myself can
make it through that part alive?

No one.

But it's the other things you'll
have to do that bother me.

The boss is complaining.

We're short-handed
behind the main tent.

Do you mind?

Scuba class, take a look.

Yeah, beginners, so?

Not the instructor.

The man's running
a business here.

Some kind of a business.
I've been watching.

Somebody help.

Jack's caught.

He's can't get loose.

- He'll drown!
- Do something!

Who the heck is that guy?

Ah, another hero.

Great, just what they need.

Well, looks like our hero
is down there quite a while.

It's been exactly one minute.

He could have drowned
down there by now.

Yeah.

Two minutes.

Two-and-a-half?

Almost.

Hey, what are you
doing out here?

I thought you came to
get him to help me back

at the main tent.

- Well, uh.
- Come on!

We got us a little show
out here, Ms. Baker.

Where?

Right down there.

That had to be three minutes.

Two minutes, 58 seconds.

What are you guys doing,
seeing how long they can

hold their breath?

Yeah, something like that.

Well, fine, now that
the free show's over,

how about getting back to
the one that pays you, okay?

- Come on, you guys.
- Come on!

- All right.
- Come on!

I want to have a
talk with that guy.

Hey, hey, you!

Hey, wait! My name is moxie.

I'm with a carni
over here and I want

to show you something.

Your watch?

- Stopwatch.
- Got the reading?

- Three minutes.
- Almost.

Do you realize how long
you were down there,

without coming up for air?

I was busy.

His leg was caught
under a lot of wire.

Well, me and my
pal the electrical man,

we were watching and

who?

Arthur sommersday,
the electrical man.

Sticks bulbs in his
mouth and they light up.

He's a sophisticated guy,

but you've proven that
neither of us has seen

everything after all.

I do not know what I have done
that you think is so remarkable.

What are you, some kind
of a long distance swimmer

or diver or something?

You must excuse me,
I'm late for unemployment.

Oh, no job, huh?

You want to go to work?

Carnival?

That's not exactly my line.

Well, you have to eat.

Right?

Come on.

Well, sir, we made contact.

You darn right I
sound apprehensive.

Mark happens to be my friend.

Come this way, I got permit
problems with the cops.

The seal act is complaining.

I sent gerdy down
to the hardware store

for electrical equipment,

and she's not back yet.

Wait till you see it,
charlene, what till you see it!

Well, can you cut
the big surprise stuff,

and just tell me what
he does that's so great?

Yeah, but saying it hasn't
got the same impact.

You have to see it
with your own eyes.

Last time I had to see
something with my own eyes,

I got run out of
Atlanta on a rail.

Yeah, but this isn't Atlanta.

It's New York City, baby!

That impressive, huh?

Hey, like the man
said, seeing is believing.

Come on.

Well, what do you think
of that? Pretty good, huh?

A guy in a tank.

What's so great about that?

He's been in there
almost an hour.

Sure he has.

No bubbles, look.

Well, he's holding his breath.
Of course there are no bubbles.

So he holds his
breath good, bye.

I am not holding my breath.

Well fella, it looks like
we're going to have to take

you to somebody else's circus.

It seems like a very
nice circus to me.

He talked.

And you still ain't
seen no bubbles, right?

Right.

And it's been two minutes
flat, since you first laid

your eyes on him, in
case you're interested.

Yeah?

Talk to me again.

What would you like me to say.

This is going to make us.

This is going to be
bigger than Tom thumb!

No one will remember barnum
when I'm through with this!

What did I tell you?

Get out of there, let's
talk about contracts.

Get out!

Aw, we're going to
put on tonight as&

the water-breathing
man, what else?

No, what we've got here
is the man from Atlantis.

- Crawford.
- C.w., it is Mark.

I have been hired
by the carnival

as a side show attraction.

Moxie got you the job?

Yes, he and the
amazing electrical man.

The electrical man, name?

Arthur sommersday.

I understand he puts
light bulbs in his mouth,

and they light up, is
not that interesting?

I must ask him how he does that.

Whatever it takes to get
them talking about the caper.

We are not going to talk
about my gambling debts.

What, who's coming? Moxie?

Yes, and I hope I can remember
what you have told me about

straights and royal flushes.

Yes, I know how much money I
owe you, and how much interest

is being added each
day, but I need time.

Yes, you could have
an associate hurt me,

but that would not get
you your money any faster.

One more week, two
would be more reasonable.

Yes, one week.

I understand.

Thank you.

I'm grateful to you.

At least I can pay
them something.

How much do you owe the boys?

These are not boys,
moxie. They are men.

That much?

Have you had much
experience with lady luck?

Right, fact, I've got
something better.

Moxie, time to get started.

We've got enough paying
customers on the grounds.

Oh, right, we'll
discuss it later.

Mark, break a leg.

Why would he want me to do that?

Oh, it's a tradition.

He was wishing you good luck.

Moxie, on the other hand,
could have actually been

suggesting you break your leg.

You are not fond of moxie?

Oh, I saw the two of
you together and I said,

charlene, get that nice
guy out of the bad company,

before it's too late.

But it is he that bought
me to your company.

I'm going to have to
watch myself around you,

aren't I?

Watch yourself?

That innocent look
you put on, I think.

I did not put I was
putting on any kind of look.

You just did it again.

And I'm here to tell you things
just the way you want them done.

Where did you learn it,
kid, in a hay loft I bet, huh?

You think I'm from a farm.

I think I'd like to hear about
it in detail, later tonight.

I'm on display later tonight.

I'm asking you
for a date, dummy.

An appointment.

A rendezvous s'il vous
plait, which is French for,

it is not political to
say no to the boss.

Hit it, moxie.

Ladies and gentlemen,
boys and girls,

the baker traveling
carnival inside show

brings you one of its
premiere attractions.

Now, stand back
for your own safety.

Take a gander at the
high-voltage shenanigans of

the amazing electrical man!

Thank you, thank you.

Thank you.

Just an ordinary, everyday
incandescent light bulb.

60 watts.

But I think we can
do better than that.

- Right?
- Right.

Now, ladies and gentlemen,

I present before you a
feast of electrical wizardry,

with no sources of
power whatsoever

but one,

the amazing electrical man.

First, 1,000 volts, the doombot.

Next, at 5,000 volts, the
scintillating resistorium.

At 15,000 volts, Jacob's ladder.

And next, I have one
of my current favorites.

At 50,000 volts,
the digital disputer.

Finally, the
gargantuan of amperes,

at 100,000 volts,

the magnificent
lightening screen.

I did say magnificent.

Thank you.

Ladies and gentlemen,
boys and girls,

the baker traveling carnival
inside show brings you

the attraction you've
all been waiting for,

the amazing
water-breathing being.

The boy from the
bottom of the sea.

The incredible
man from Atlantis!

Is it a trick?

Illusion, or is it
the real thing?

Step right up folks
and look him over.

Try to find any semblance
of breathing equipment.

$1,000 to the first man
who finds a scuba mask,

any kind of gear in there
besides Mark and the water.

That's his first
name, folks, Mark.

And Mark is friendly.

Mark likes to talk to people.

Don't you, Mark?

That is if there's
something to say.

Well, then, let's have
some of these nice people

ask you some questions,
and we'll find out, okay?

That is okay with me.

You heard the man, good people.

Any questions for
the man from Atlantis,

step right up, step right up.

Don't be shy, come on,

ask him some questions.

Moxie.

Later.

It's important.

It'll keep, Arthur.

You, young man, you
look like an intelligent sort.

Do you have any questions
for the man from Atlantis?

Is he really from Atlantis?

Don't ask me, ask Mark.

Actually, I am not
absolutely certain that I am

from the underwater civilization
you refer to as Atlantis.

I have no memory of
my life beneath the sea,

since whatever bought
me to the surface was

a traumatic experience.

But I have spent much of
my time searching the sea

for my origins.

Say one thing for the
rub. He's got to be Irish,

to come up with a
line of baloney like that.

Take a look at the
looks on those faces,

not to mention the look on mine.

The question is how
I breathe underwater.

I filter oxygen from the sea.

Moxie, something's wrong.

Yeah.

Moxie, close the
curtains, close the curtains!

Everything's all right!

No cause for alarm.

Listen, I'm telling you
everything's peachy.

Believe me, it's just
a technical problem.

We'll resume in a moment.

The man from
Atlantis is all right.

One of those
auto-animated figures.

No wonder he could
breathe underwater.

What the hell do you
think you were doing?

Do you know how long
it takes to find someone

like that for what we want?

I tried to tell you, he's
working for the government.

Look what I
found in his trailer.

- Break it.
- Hold it.

Nobody breaks nothing.

You have to get in
there and pull him out.

That's all we need,
is a wall of water.

Are you all right?

It's some kind
of ocean institute.

You mean you killed
the only swimmer we had,

because of this?

He's coming up.

Help him out!

What's the matter,
you crazy or something?

He's not dead.

Are you okay?

Hey, are you all right, huh?

I'm all right.

Do you know how many
people you scared in there, huh?

I'm sorry for that.

Mark.

Hey, Mark, let me tell
you what happened.

The electrical man can
do his own explaining.

Well, he found this
and he got nervous.

He found what?

Where did you get that?

Well, we went
through your things.

Why?

Well, we had a couple
of jobs lined up for you,

and one of them kind of
bends the law a little bit.

You're telling me he thought
I was with the government?

Well, this is an
official-looking seal,

for someone who's
supposed to be out of work.

Why did he not ask me first?

He's impetuous, and I think

that electricity is kind of
doing something to his bean.

I'm asking you.

They offered me
money to examine me,

200 dollars.

I believe the expression is,
"Take the money and run."

break a foot.

Your share is a
million-and-a-half.

My share of what?

Can I explain it to you inside?

What do you say?

Hey, Mark, wait up.

Hey, we had a date last night.

I'm not used to being stood up.

Stood up?

Left in the lurch?

Ignored?

Especially for the
likes of a midget.

That has all been
straightened out now.

Oh, how nice.

You are angry.

You keel over in front of an
audience, worrying me sick,

and then you act as
though nothing were wrong,

and then you run off with moxie,
and you don't even talk to me?

Well, what do you think?

I'm mad, yeah.

Last night, all I could think of
was me and what had happened,

to the point that I did not
remember our planned meeting.

And this morning,
I act defensively

when you justifiably
point it out to me.

It occurs to me that I
was and am continuing

to be quite selfish.

It is not right,
and I apologize.

You can be disarming
when you want to be,

can't you?

Disarming?

What gets me is how
well it works on me.

And I've been around.

A carni brat.

Born in the proverbial trunk.

My father used to have me cry
on cue, when the landlord came

for the rent that
we didn't have,

not to mention more
than a few cops.

This trunk you were born in.

It goes along with
the breaking of legs

and the sod I'm supposed
to have in my veins.

Wish dad was still
around sometimes.

Used to be fun, not
having books to balance

and permits to hassel.

Father is dead.

Two years ago last month.

Kid's an orphan.

I believe I am one of those.

From no farm though.

I've reconsidered that.

I would like to see you tonight.

I hate myself for saying this,

but I'd like to see you too.

And just in case you
get absent-minded again.

What's the matter, never
kissed a lady before?

See you later, kiddo.

Bank?

First and fairlon.

According to moxie, a
lot of very wealthy people

store valuables and
safety deposit boxes there.

It's a good neighborhood.

But I can't understand what
they need the swimmer for.

To get in.

Actually, it is a very
clever plan, c.W.

There is a storm drain
running beneath the bank.

I am to swim through it and
open the door from the inside.

Turning off the alarms.

And letting them in.

Arthur will then use
the electrical extension

on his arm to burn
through the locks.

- When?
- Tonight.

I'll notify the authorities.

And you will arrest them?

The police will arrest
them, after you open

the door for them.

It's called "Caught in the act."

and then my
assignment will be over.

Right.

Why?

You like it here?

There is someone else,
c.W., back at the carnival.

What, someone other than
moxie and this electrical man?

Her name is charlene.

Charlene?

All right, now how
does she fit in?

She is not a part
of the scheme, c.W.

We were talking earlier today.

Yes?

When a woman touches
her lips to your lips,

that is a kiss.

That means she
likes you, does it not?

I felt funny, c.W.,

but nice, very nice.

He wants to know about
the birds and the bees.

Oh no, c.W. I would like to
know about men and women.

- What are you grinning about?
- Oh, I don't know.

I was just thinking
how nice it is to teach

somebody something
they didn't know.

I believe our kid's
got something going

with the boss lady.

Oh, really?

I'm just putting it out, so
we can make use of it, jerk.

How is that?

Call it a little
extra insurance,

in case he suddenly
gets cold feet.

Moxie, what would Mark
be doing in this trailer?

I think he said he was sick.

Well, there's nobody in here.

I'm sorry.

Everyone has to have
a pawn once in a while.

- Moxie?
- Arthur?

It's one o'clock on the nose.

Let's get on with it.

No sign of them yet.

Flood control confirms
that the storm drain line runs

under that bank.

They'll be here.

This is not the same place.

The tunnel that goes
beneath the bank is&

we're not going for the bank.

The plans have been
changed, as they say.

I do not like going into things I
do not know about beforehand.

It's more lucrative
than the bank,

believe me.

You still do not trust me.

Who do you trust in
this business, anyways?

What we got here is
the chadway museum.

It's designed to be what
they call burglar proof.

All kinds of alarm systems.
The main ones on a timer.

But it can be opened
from the inside, no problem.

It's like the bank we discussed.

It does have a storm
drain running under it.

Filled almost to the top
with your favorite, h20.

But you can't use
your scuba gear though.

Metal detectors.

And as far as coming up
every few yards to take a breath,

closed circuit TV.

And you have to
swim past the cameras

before you break for surface.

Which will be no
problem for you, right?

What are you after
in this museum?

Artifacts, solid gold.

One in particular.

The mask of the pharaoh.

We figure they want
to ransom it back.

What if they get
stubborn about it?

That's the good
thing about solid gold.

You can always melt it down.

Same plan as the bank,

just a different
building, that's all.

The passage is a little narrow,

but it's like the
deal we had before.

Not as far as I am concerned.

You passing?

If that means I am not
going to the museum, yes.

Too tough for you?

Is that it?

That is not the point.

I will not be used by anyone.

You do not trust me.

I do not trust you.

Well, you can trust
me to do one thing,

kill charlene baker.

Believe me.

Hey, we got her.

Believe me.

It ought to take you
five minutes tops

to go through the storm drain.

I figure another minute
upstairs, inside the museum.

Maybe 30 seconds
with the breaker.

It's next to the paddle in
the room next to the doors.

That's six-and-a-half minutes.

Arthur and I are giving
you seven minutes.

We're either in there
in seven minutes,

or we're on our way to do
business with charlene baker.

I will go.

Arthur, when this is all over.

That shorts the alarm system.

The outside alarm.

It doesn't take care of
the timer on the door,

and it doesn't turn
off the photo electrics

around the mask.

The outside guard.

Right on time.

Hey, man, you got a match?

Thanks anyway.

Arthur, moxie.

The main exhibit hall's
through there, right?

But the mask of the
pharaoh is that way.

So it is, so it is.

We've got one more
guard to take care of.

He will be no trouble.

What are you talking about?

He still got his rounds.

He is drunk.

Remind me to give
him a piece of the action,

as a token of our gratitude.

Two microscopic wires
running up this side,

and over the top,

and down the side.

And eight photo electric wires.

Arthur, take care of it.

Something's gone sour.

Your man at the carnival grounds
was positive he saw them leave.

How good is this
man of yours, anyway?

You sure he fed you
the right information?

He's 100 percent reliable.

I just hope he's not in trouble.

These thin little filaments
are embedded in the glass.

Their idea of tricky.

Don't forget the top.

It's all one piece, do you mind?

That jerk wouldn't wake
up if the world were coming

to an end.

Hurry up.

That'll do it.

About time too, I'm
almost out of power.

Take the other side.

Take the other side!

Tilt it toward you.

Easy.

I wish we had time to
get some more of this stuff.

No, not yet.

There was photo electric eyes

and microscopic wires.

We don't know what's
underneath this pedestal.

Beautiful, isn't it?

I do hope they'd
rather ransom it back,

instead of letting
us melt it down.

I don't see anything.

That is because
there is nothing there.

There was a pressure alarm
mechanism there, you idiot!

Arthur, get him!

I thought you'd never ask.

Moxie!

You will stay here
until the police arrive.

My element, Arthur?

Water doesn't bother me, friend.

Remember how I almost
killed you in your tank?

Well, I'm going to
finish the job this time.

Moxie!

Mark!

Are you all right?

It was not a bank, c.W.

I knew you weren't nave.

I knew that.

It was important moxie
and Arthur be stopped.

They had killed one man already.

If the exhibit had been stolen,

there could have been
international repercussions.

There you go again.

But I have not left yet.

You're talking sharp,
and it's supposed to be

the romantic good-bye.

Being romantic, I
do not know how.

Oh, you do all right.

Maybe not with
words, but you do okay.

Is it proper, a last kiss?

It's mandatory.

Oh, you sure you want to go?

C.w. Is waiting.

C.w.,

well, you've got a
great performer here.

Never anyone better
with our carnival.

So long, kiddo.

Hey, you guys, get a move on.

We got to be in
frisco by five o'clock.

Come on, get a hustle!

What did she mean performer?

I believe she means
my act underwater, c.W.

Underwater?
