Major Crimes (2012–2018): Season 3, Episode 7 - Two Options - full transcript

A married couple is killed, execution-style, in their home, and their daughter and grandchildren are missing and may be hostages.

They're gonna make McGinnis
our new deputy chief.

I'm telling you, Jamey.
Nobody else can do it.

Like hell, man. McGinnis
already turned that down, man.

Quarter million dollars a year.
Nobody shooting at you.

Uh-huh. With bullets.

And, Chad, would you mind, like,

- not spilling crap all over the car, man?
- Oh, sorry, man.

Trying to keep my weight up.
PFQ's coming at me next month.

PFQ, right, right, right.

Your physical fitness qualification

does not mean eat like a child, Chad.

You know, I've never actually
seen you use utensils... ever.

I hope whoever does take over S.O.B.

cuts back on this crime-suppression bullshit

and lets SWAT train more,
like we're supposed to.

Pacific units. Shooting in
progress at 12480 Addison Ave.

P.R. heard four or five shots fired

and saw a black Mustang...

Take the radio. Tell
them we're 9 blocks away

and we'll back up responding units.

And get me a headphone and a tac helmet.

R-61, show us backing on the
shooting-in-progress call.

All right, Air 10 is over Addison.

Black-and-whites coming up the
street, I got you in sight.

The location will be off
to your left-hand side.

Right now, right now. There you go.

And SWAT unit... SWAT unit,

I got you in the S.U.V.
coming up the street.

Where those two black-and-whites
are, grab the curb.

There you go. Right there. Good.

All right, we'll take the side and the back.

Put all your men in the front,
okay? And listen to my radio.

- Do not go in until I tell you to.
- Okay.

All right.

- Helmet cams on, Chad.
- Roger.

All units on the perimeter, just stand by.

Use caution for crossfire.
You're good to move up now.

Go.

Go.

Yeah, you guys are clear to go in the back.

- Clear to go in the back.
- Go.

Go.

Two down.

Go.

R-61, request backup and roll paramedics.

There are two adults
down inside this location.

Looks like gunshot wounds.
14-Adam-92 remain front.

All right, everybody, hold what you
got. Officers are about to make entry.

Both dead. Still bleeding.

Go.

Clear left.

Clear right.

You open. I enter. One...

Two, three.

Clear.

Cats.

R61, code 4. Residence clear.

Who does this kind of thing?

Man.

Whoo. Medium-caliber bullet.

Stippling on the head. Two wounds each.

- Execution style.
- Yeah.

I have five 9mm casings,

so there's a stray bullet here somewhere.

And why was that cat
locked up in the bedroom?

No sign they were taped or
tied, so it happened really fast.

Why would someone just walk in

and murder two elderly
people in their own home?

First, who are they?

Victims are J.B. and
Sandra Lanier... both 72.

Well, initial
canvass of the neighborhood

says they moved from Colorado to Los Angeles

about three years ago, sir.

Huh.

Well, where are those two SWAT
boys that secured the scene?

And what were they doing here?

Jamey Perez, sir.

And when the call came out, my partner and I

were on crime-suppression
detail a few blocks away.

- Did you track down the P.R.?
- Chad Stuart, sir.

Person reporting was one block over

in his backyard when he heard the shots.

Then he went out front,

said he saw a black Mustang
with flame decals racing off.

Then he dialed 911.

Jamey Perez. I know your father.

And your grandfather.

Third-generation L.A.P.D., sir.

Good for you. Good for you, son.

Uh, Julio, why don't you, uh,
go talk to the neighbor?

See if she can help with the timeline.

And take Mr. Perez the third with you.

She's alone. You might need some help.

Morning, ma'am.

- Detective Sanchez, L.A.P.D..
- Are the Laniers okay?

Oh, you know them. Great. We weren't sure.

Did you happen to see
the Laniers today, ma'am?

I did... Uh, about two hours ago.

Sandra asked if I could pick
up some sugar-free cookies,

which I have here somewhere.

A-are they all right?
What's going on over there?

It's under control now, ma'am.

Um, any particular reason why the Laniers

might have had a cat shut
up in the master bedroom?

Princess. That cat may be old.

But anytime they put her in
the backyard, she runs away.

And it's a big hassle getting her back,

so when the grandkids are here,

Princess is kept in seclusion.

Oh. When do their grandkids get here, ma'am?

Oh, they're here already.

Linda dropped them off this morning.

Linda? Who's Linda?

The Laniers' daughter-in-law.

After their son died...
Brain tumor, very sad...

J.B. And Sandra followed Linda to L.A.

To help with the children.

She drops them off on her way
to work during the summer.

Or her fiancé does.

Okay, Linda's fiancé... You know his
name, or what kind of car he drives?

Uh, no. Uh, no. Actually, now that you ask,

I don't think I've ever even met him.

Okay, what about the names
and ages of the grandkids?

Well, Henry is maybe 9, and Mandy is 7.

Ma'am, ma'am, ma'am,
ma'am, ma'am! Ma'am, ma'am.

All units on Addison Avenue, be advised.

We have new information.

There are two missing
kids from the residence.

We have a double critical missing.

Repeat, a double critical missing.

Yeah, Roger, here. 10 copy.

This is now a double critical missing.

Not there.

- Not there.
- Play nice.

And we're certain the grandfather shot
this video of these children this morning?

We are.

Neighbor verified that
these were the clothes

that the children were
wearing when she saw them.

- Mandy, let me show you.
- No!

- See...
- I'm doing it!

She's gonna
need me in a minute.

No, I won't!

We grabbed stills from the cell

and distributed them everywhere.

Sent officers to every
registered sex offender

within a two-mile radius of the house.

If these kids were targets of opportunity,

the clock is ticking.

Commander McGinnis, may I ask
where special operations bureau

is with the search for this mother?

I have an S.I.S. undercover detail

waiting at Linda Lanier's residence,

in case she comes home.

And Lieutenant Cooper at her
workplace, which we called,

but where the receptionist told us

she left for lunch 25 minutes ago.

Her cellphone is completely off the grid,

and according to Detective Sanchez's F.I.S,

she has a fiancé, which worries me.

Hello, Chief Taylor and...

Everyone.

Deputy city attorney Gloria Lim here.

Um, the L.A.P.D. is
tracking a violent offender,

and Detective Julio Sanchez
fired his weapon last week.

Lieutenant Provenza killed a
suspect during this calendar year.

If they shoot anyone else,
it could be problematic.

So my boss was wondering,
since SWAT was first on the scene,

if this investigation
could be handled by them.

Ms. Lim, SWAT is a tactical element

and doesn't investigate
kidnappings or homicides.

Major crimes does that, and right now,

we are looking for 2
children under the age of 10,

abducted by a murderer,

and I suggest that you come
back once we've found them.

Special agent Howard, yes?

If we're done discussing liability issues,

the FBI had unexpected
problems running background

on the Laniers with just their names.

- If we could have pictures of them, too...
- I'll text you from Mr. Lanier's cell.

We also have several photographs...

of this guy.

I bet he's our missing mom's fiancé.

Can't put a name on him yet.

I'll have the FBI's facial
recog run a image search

on our potential fiancé,
see what we come up with.

Doesn't Linda Lanier have a cellphone?

Why don't we just call her
and ask her where she is,

- and for the name of her fiancé?
- Her phone is off the grid.

Are you treating the mother as a suspect?

Because we were told that you were
checking out sex offenders, and...

I have to take exception to the
way we're being interrupted here.

- Gloria...
- Allow me, captain. Chief.

I-I deal with all this city-attorney
bullshit on a daily basis now.

Gloria, is it? Listen.

There was no forced entry
at our victims' house,

both of whom were shot in
the head at close range.

And though we can't rule out sex offenders,

it still means the Laniers were
likely murdered by someone they knew.

And if it was not an execution,

it was probably a domestic dispute,

making the mother and her
unidentified fiancé suspects.

And when children get abducted,

the L.A.P.D. is not legally
required to notify parents.

The law may not demand it,
but it's still actionable.

And mothers do not need
to abduct their own kids,

which, if you had children
yourself, you'd understand.

I'm sorry. What did you just say?

That the reason you're against
contacting Linda Lanier

is that you don't have children yourself.

Anymore.

What?

Commander McGinnis
doesn't have children anymore.

I'm... I don't understand.

The commander's daughter and husband

were killed in a car
accident four years ago.

I, um... I thought... I-I was told...

I'm so sorry.

If we could turn our attention back

to the children who are missing today...

I know we want to be extremely careful

about how we approach the mother.

Is there a plan, going forward?

Captain, S.O.B. will wait on your
investigation to fully deploy.

Meanwhile, I leave Lieutenant
Cooper and the two SWAT officers

at your disposal by the mother's workplace.

I'd suggest staying invisible
as long as practical.

Personally, I'd rather see the children

before the mother sees us.

Lieutenant Tao and I will help the FBI

look into our victims' background.

Meanwhile, lieutenant Provenza,

take the rest of the division
to Linda Lanier's workplace.

Please. Thank you.

Chief, our concerns.

Uh, yeah. Right.

Lieutenant, if you and Sanchez

would let Flynn and Sykes
lead the charge here,

that might be a more prudent
deployment of your resources.

Captain, are you sure

we shouldn't inform the
media about these kids?

Chief, if I didn't have
to, I wouldn't tell you.

Hey. Thank God you're here.

I need you to just sign this
form saying that I completed,

uh, 20 of community service
for the L.A.P.D. this year.

When did you do that?

Are you kidding?

A-a few months ago,

I... I was... I was the center
of a massive S.I.S. operation.

That was in January,

and this paper says that
your community service

is to be performed during the summer.

Okay. Uh, that's fine. I'll
do something else, then.

But I-I need to turn this in in three days,

- so if... if you could...
- Here's a job for you.

Take down all those comparison
photos from our last homicide.

Grab the ones
from those boxes there,

alphabetize them by their last name.

And on the back, write the case number

for which they were requested

so that we can add all
those girls to our database.

There are over 1,000 pictures here.

Uh, yes, I think you're right.

Captain, some interesting
things to consider.

Other than Princess, the
Laniers' runaway cat,

there's no photograph or even a
piece of furnishing in their home

that's more than three years old.

It's the same with their finances.

Are you saying our victims are in
the witness-protection program?

- Not with the FBI.
- Then with whom?

There are over 17,000 law-enforcement
agencies in the United States.

Let me call my office.

I'll see if we can't
track these people down.

Okay.

Everyone's almost in place.

S.O.B. gave me everything I
asked for, and it's a lot.

So, I've labeled the screens
broadcasting from personnel.

This monitor's officer Perez.

That's officer Stuart.

That's Lieutenant Cooper
driving to the location.

Over here, Detective Sykes
walking through the parking lot

of Linda Lanier's workplace...
Looking for her car, I think.

And over here... live feeds from helicopters

searching for a black
Mustang with flame decals.

And this is hooked up to
RACR's incident reports.

You can see all assaults
and robberies citywide.

There's our kidnappings and homicides.

Lots of stolen cars...

A Honda Accord here, a Range rover there,

but nothing on a Mustang,
uh, today or yesterday.

- What's that over there?
- Oh, that. So cool.

S.O.B. uses it for field operations.

And here's ours setting up
outside Linda Lanier's workplace.

Each officer involved snaps a GPS
chip on the inside of their badge,

and it tracks their locations.

L.A.F... Flynn.

E.A.S... Sykes, moving towards Flynn.

And here's Julio and Provenza driving up.

Any chance we can keep all this?

Let's see how useful it is first.

I'm not looking for our people.

I'm looking for our missing
mother and her fiancé.

Sykes. It's 10 after 2:00.

- Is the mom back from lunch yet?
- Not sure.

I found her Toyota Corolla
in the parking lot.

No blood, but the engine's cold.

She might have gone to lunch in another car.

Maybe a black Mustang with flame decals.

Yeah. Uh, Cooper.

- Yo.
- All right.

In addition to your button camera,

tune your Mike into tac frequency 32

and keep that volume up.

If Linda Lanier or her
fiancé or her children

are inside her workplace,
we'll be joining you shortly.

You got it.

One extremely special delivery coming up.

- Buzz, ask Agent Howard to join us.
- Yes, ma'am.

And there goes Cooper.

And if the mother astill isn't there?

Cooper has to find out what we
need without alarming anyone.

Hello.

Can I help you?

Hey.

I have a package for Linda Lanier.

Oh, I'll take it for you.

Uh, sorry, this requires a signature

from either Linda or her fiancé.

Well, her fiancé doesn't
even work here, and...

I don't want the boss to know,
but Linda's still at lunch.

Oh. Well, how much longer
do you think she'll be?

Well, she's planning her wedding.

You know how tough that is.

Not yet. Something to
look forward to, I guess.

That Coop.

He's sure got a way with
the women, don't he, Sykes?

Mm-hmm.

So, tell me, how do you know Linda so well?

For one thing, I take all her messages.

Okay, I'm not supposed to do this.

But I'm gonna trust you. How about that?

Mm. Okay.

If, uh, you just write her name down there

and the name of her fiancé,

and I'll leave this with you.

Oh, and also phone numbers

where they can both be reached.

I've got to cover my ass, right?

Let me see if I can read
your handwriting here.

Christopher Jacks.

213-555-0188.

I have a friend named Chris Jackson.

He drives a white '99 Cadillac.

Mnh-mnh. This Chris
Jackson is not your friend.

He's a commodities broker for DLA Capital,

and he drives a BMW that
he treats like his child.

- Well, I went to school with a kid
- I have him! I have him!

William Christopher Jackson.

No priors. Hmm.

He's just made an auspicious criminal debut.

Okay, here it is.

Uh, Chris Jackson drives a BMW 7 series,

and it's equipped with a lojack system.

Report the car as stolen
and activate the lojack.

And let's print out Jackson's DMV photo

- and release it to our people.
- Yes, captain.

Lojack hit.

Uh, it looks like our BMW.

It's pointing off to the left, partner,

headed over towards Lafayette Park.

Air 10 to units. I think I found your BMW.

It shows stationary in the area of...

Let's call it 1700 block of
Soto. I'll tell you what, guys.

We'll go over there and
try to find it for you.

We'll stay high and wide
so as not to burn it.

There's the BMW...

Eight miles from the mother's workplace.

Why aren't we inside that car already?

We can't burn that car, chief.
What if the killer's watching?

What if the kids are tied up in the trunk

- and we're just sitting here?
- We're not just sitting.

We've put an S.I.S. surveillance van

at major crimes' disposal right here.

I've got two SWAT officers

on the roof of this building, right here,

with a clear view of the
BMW across the street.

Lieutenant Cooper is driving
across town with his truck,

which is large enough to double-park

in front of the target vehicle
and block it from the street

so we can search the BMW without being seen

from the surrounding
buildings or passing traffic.

We also have Jackson's cell number.

And in the next 10 minutes,
we'll have a warrant to trace it.

I'm going to ask you
one more time. It's hot.

What if the kids are in the trunk,

dehydrated, or worse?

And what if they're not

and the L.A.P.D. tips its
hand by searching the car?

- The killer could feel pressured.
- We're all pressured!

Let's count it out.

L.A.P.D. give me a warrant

to track Chris Jackson's cell... 10 minutes.

Finding his phone... two minutes.

Five minutes after that,
Cooper's in place by the BMW

and we search it without anyone noticing.

That's 17 minutes total, chief.

I'll give you 20, starting now.

You've turned down a promotion to
be deputy chief of S.O.B. twice,

and you've said no to every other person

we've suggested as your boss.

So, what about Fritz?

He's FBI.

Fully vested.

He could retire tomorrow
with his entire pension.

Look, Ann, the period during which

you can keep this position vacant

and run the whole show
yourself is coming to an end.

And I guarantee you

Fritz Howard can get
appointed as your chief.

Think about it.

All right, guys, if you see
any of these people in the park

while you're covering Detective Sykes,

you cut in on tac 32.

If you see a dark Mustang with
flame decals, you call it in.

- All right, good luck.
- You, too, sir.

Got eyes on Sykes?

Yep.

Baby and I are ready to go.

All units, stay put

while we wait for the warrant

and Cooper to come and block the BMW.

I already have paramedics standing by.

Anything else S.O.B. can provide?

Trauma counseling. The
kids are gonna need it.

Good call. I'll add that to my list.

May I ask you a question
about special agent Howard?

Do you consider him to be a bureaucrat,

- or is he...
- One of the good guys?

Yes.

FBI... but still...

Okay. Something to think about.

Thank you, captain.

Lieutenant Tao. Major crimes.

Great. Thank you. We got the warrant.

- Am I a go?
- Yes, you are.

Go. All right, this won't take long.

I'm joining tac frequency 32.

Hold on. Hold on. Has the
FBI had any luck determining

whether our victims are in the
witness-protection program?

We're still eliminating possibilities,
but it's gonna take time.

Our best chance of answering that question

and finding the children
is locating Chris Jackson,

- which I'm just about to do.
- Good.

Where's Lieutenant Cooper and his truck?

Hmm. Not moving.

- Damn it.
- Lieutenant Cooper, what's the problem?

Somebody ran a stop sign.

I did not! I never ran a stop sign!

Shut up, you idiot!

I may not make the E.T.A.

Do you guys have some other
way of blocking the BMW?

All units, Chris Jackson should
be within 12 feet of his BMW.

Take a good look around,
because he is looking at you.

- See anything?
- Nope.

Do you want us to drive
the S.I.S. van in front of the BMW?

I don't know. Let me think.

We may have to
burn the car after all.

If we double-park this van by the BMW,

it might as well say
"police" on the side of it.

I don't see him. Is he up a tree?

R-61. He could be in one
of the buildings close by.

Captain, time to call in patrol.

We know Chris Jackson is present.

You gave us 20 minutes. I still have 5.

Hey. Hey, what are you doing?

Ice-cream run. Sir, you want anything?

What?! No, I don't want any ice cream!

Okay, okay, you call me if
you change your mind, sir.

N-no. I'd like an orange snow cone.

What? It's hot in here.

Where's Julio going?

I'm Detective Julio Sanchez, L.A.P.D.

Would you take your jacket
off and give it to me sir?

- Please.
- D-did I do something wrong?

No. Raise your right hand.

By the power vested in me by the state,

I declare you a temporary
patrol officer of the L.A.P.D.

Congratulations. Okay, move over. Hold this.

- Don't put it on!
- Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.

Hold my coat and tie, and don't sit on them.

- They're brand-new.
- Okay, okay.

Y-you're not gonna hurt
my truck, are you? Right?

- Hey, lieutenant.
- Julio, what in the hell are you doing?

Uh, h-hold on, sir. What is your name?

- David. David Alfonso Miguel...
- D-d-David's good.

Uh, my friend David just loaned
me his big ice-cream truck,

and I'm gonna double-park
it in front of the BMW.

- Do not let the SWAT shoot us, sir.
- Shoot us?!

With guns, shoot us?

Julio, if... if you kill anyone today,

you could be on desk duty
for the rest of your life!

No. No, no. Yeah, you're
breaking up, lieutenant.

Damn it! Stubborn.

This is gonna be fun. You ready, officer?

Whee!

I thought we were keeping
Julio on a leash today.

Well, he can't run away.
I mean... I mean, look.

We can see exactly where he is.

All right, listen up.
Listen up, everyone.

Detective Sanchez has jumped
on that ice-cream truck

that you've been hearing.

And he's riding it down to the BMW

to help block it from view and
probably create a distraction.

- Ice-cream truck?
- Sykes, you're up.

Okay, thanks. That's enough. That's enough.

Okay. Ice cream! Ice cream! Free ice cream!

Free ice cream!

Igratis!

Here you go!

Oh, boy. I found our fiancé.

- You guys see this?
- Yes.

Guess he's off our list of suspects.

Close the trunk. Get detective
Sanchez back in the van.

Everyone hold your positions.
That BMW's there for a reason.

Vanilla, chocolate!

Ice cream!

Get back to your day job.

- Gracias.
- Oh, gracias.

There's Julio, going back to the van.

See, chief? We couldn't
lose him if we tried.

__

Lieutenant,

you called the victims' cat,
Princess, a runaway.

According to the victims' neighbor, yes...

Every time they let her out.

If she always ran away,

that means they must have always found her.

How is it that they always
found her, lieutenant?

I-I don't see a GPS tag on her collar.

- Whoo!
- You know, it's probably something

implanted behind her shoulder.

Ooh, I think I have something in my desk.

Rusty, could you give me a hand?

Take the cat out of her
carrier and hold onto her.

- Be careful.
- W-why?

She doesn't like being held.

Okay. Nice kitty.

Always a runaway means that Princess

should have two locator chips.

One before the move, and one after.

She smells awful.

If the Laniers were in the
witness-protection program,

who do you think they testified against?

Well, we have two
grandparents shot in the head,

missing children,

a dead fiancé stuffed
in the trunk of a car.

Sounds like a marital argument to me.

Mm.

But the Laniers told their neighbors

their son died of a brain tumor.

Well, I'd like to see his name on
a death certificate, wouldn't you?

Oh.

There's one chip.

Holy crap, there's another one.

Let me input these numbers.

Okay, Princess, all I need from
you is one previous address.

Okay, nice kitty.

Nice kitty.

803. Clear.

805.

Yes. Clear.

806, clear. What about the
adjoining rooms next door?

What is going on here?

You're evacuating people from their homes?

Yes, we think our killer is

in the southwest corner
apartment of this building,

on the top floor, with his wife and kids.

The killer's wife and kids?

You mean... he's the...
he's the son of our victims?

I-I-I thought he was dead.

Well, that is what
the Laniers told everyone,

although they're not actually the Laniers.

They're the Colliers,

or, at least, that's
what their cat tells us.

Princess' previous address,
in Boulder, Colorado,

belonged to the victims,

who are in the witness-protection program.

Their son, Paul, was released
from prison two weeks ago

after serving a six-year sentence

for embezzling from the family business.

But what makes you think that he's here?

Uh, well, the warden of the penitentiary

where Paul Collier was incarcerated

gave us a list of his known associates,

and we have one... Jared Temple,

who lives directly across the street

from where we found the body of
Chris Jackson in the trunk of his BMW.

Temple's apartment is
down the corner on the right.

And we've been sitting
on top of it all afternoon.

How is this dirtbag Temple involved?

He just finished 10 years for meth
possession and armed robbery,

most of which he spent as
our suspect's cell mate.

Does Temple own a Mustang?

No, but he could have borrowed one.

He works for his uncle, who's
a mechanic with his own garage.

Have we established if either Temple
or this lunatic Collier are here,

with the kids and the wife?

No, but before we knock on the door and see,

we have to finish evacuating the building.

The captain just wants
us to watch the apartment

until we're able to establish who's inside,

and S.I.S. can mass on the location.

S.I.S.? Why not us?

Look, there're only two things that
can be done in a situation like this.

A hostage negotiation or a rescue.

Hostage negotiation... with SWAT.

Is that based on your vast
professional experience?

Because I think this is
definitely a rescue operation.

Uh, while we're evacuating the building,

why don't we run those options by
a behavioral-science professional.

Oh.

I-I came to help the children afterward.

If you're gonna profile an adult offender,

- maybe someone else would be...
- That's okay, Dr. Joe.

Just listen to the two options,
and then give Ms. Lim here,

your best bet as to which
one we should pursue.

Commander?

Do we try and negotiate with this murderer?

Or do we rescue the hostages
by taking him by surprise?

Well, clinically, that's an
impossible question to answer,

but the suspect had several years in prison

to plan what he'd do after his release,

so we have to believe
that murdering his parents

and kidnapping his children and wife
are all constituent parts of that plan.

Also, he found someone willing to help him,

which suggests he's persuasive,
organized, and determined.

I have to say, so far, he seems to
have done everything he wanted to do,

so I'm worried by the
absence of an exit strategy.

That's okay, doctor.

As it turns out, I am a
specialist in exit strategies.

I say get your snipers ready, commander.

Snipers?!

Snipers endanger the children's lives!

We will only be firing
nonlethal ARWEN rounds

through the window to distract him.

Firing them from where?

The top floor of your suspect's
building is the highest point available.

No, it isn't.

You know why
Provenza sent us down here

to look for the Mustang, don't you?

Because he wants us as far away

from the action as possible, that's why.

Right now, brother, me
and you are crap magnets.

Every bit of trouble on this
earth is clinging to us like...

What? What's that?

One of these children that
we're looking for... the boy.

He dumped a bunch of these
lego pieces in his pocket

before he was kidnapped.

It was on the video that
his grandfather made.

- They're here.
- Oh, man.

Look! Man, that was not
a Mustang. It's a Camaro!

Eyewitnesses, man.

Lieutenant, this is Cooper. Can you hear me?

We have proof that the
children were in the building.

Cooper, they made it out of the car.

No reception. We're too far down.

I'm gonna look for a signal.

Can you see this?

Hmm.

Can anyone hear me, over?

Hey, can anybody hear me?

Hey, man. What are you doing?

I'm just admiring this Camaro.

It's beautiful.

Yeah, I don't like anyone
messing with my car.

Oh, you're the owner?

Hey, listen, I work for a company

that rents cars like this for movie sets...

- You're a cop! I know it!
- Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa! Hey, hey!

- Stop! Don't move!
- Hey, buddy, relax!

All right, it's okay! Stop!

Stand there, or I'll shoot you dead, I swear!

Hey, b-b-buddy... Buddy, relax.

Lieutenant Flynn, where did
those gunshots come from?

Downstairs, I think.

L.A.P.D.! Freeze!

Put down your weapon! Damn it.

We have visual confirmation of the suspect.

And he has visual confirmation of us.

Captain, there's screaming
coming from the apartment now.

Feels like waiting for S.I.S. is a bad plan.

We have to move now. Tell your
people to do the best they can.

SWAT goes forward. But those apartm...

Sorry, captain. My helicopters, my orders.

You sent Howard up there for a reason.

Airships, this is commander McGinnis.

- You are a go, go, go.
- Special agent Howard knows

- what to expect.
- Work with him.

I'll do the rescue with Chad and Jamey here.

No, no, I'll go in with Chad and jamey.

- This is an L.A.P.D. operation.
- I know the plan.

Helicopters are coming.
There's gonna be a signal.

We don't have time to
argue about this. Trust me.

Andy, I'm the right person to
do what needs to be done here,

for lots of reasons.

Detective Amy Sykes, I.A.P.D.

Hey, what's going on?

Shh. L.A.P.D. Get back.

Hey! Y-you can't hold me! You can't hold me!

If you don't let me go,
people are gonna die!

Who's gonna die, huh?! Who's gonna die?!

Where are those kids?!

Where did you put those kids?!

Hey. Hey.

Oh, you got to be kidding me.

Hey. Hey.

Sanchez. Hey.

Stop pushing me. I need you to
get low and below that wall.

- We don't have a lot of time.
- Wait, let me call my parents.

Shut up and stay in the bathtub, please.

When I say "go," you
guys knock the door down.

If you keep Collier away from his hostages.

I'll handle the rest.

Do we have any kind of backup at all?

No, but we have a pretty
good distraction coming.

Sniper 1, Sniper 2,
fall in behind me.

All right, commander, this is Sniper 1.

We have a 20-second E.T.A.

- 20 seconds.
- Get ready.

Knock.

FBI! Set down your weapon and open the door!

Stay down. Stay down.

Commander, this is Sniper 1.

We have the target acquired.

- You have a green light.
- Green light. Green light.

Go! Aah!

Please, somebody help us!

Help us, please!

Chad, are you okay?

Chad!

Yep.

Andy, we're clear.

Whoa-ho.

All units in the Soto area,
this is Lieutenant Cooper.

We have an officer down.
Repeat, officer down.

Roll paramedics.

Julio, stay with me.

The mother may need surgery.

But the kids, they look okay.

And Julio's wound is superficial.

So, before you go,

you sure you wouldn't like
to reconsider my suggestion?

I appreciate being asked.

And deputy chief of S.O.B. sounds like...

a great second career.

But Brenda's been offered
a new job in D.C...

a very good job,

and I was thinking about
transferring with her.

A long-distance relationship shouldn't
be a deal breaker at your age...

with her.

Besides, being deputy chief
of s.O.B. Is a fantastic gig.

You'd be like the general,

with his own army of special forces.

Fritz, this is a... good
deal, for all of us.

Around here, it's always
about the deal, isn't it?

- Well...
- That's a great sales pitch, chief.

You just better hope whoever
buys in gets along with McGinnis.

I mean, do you even have a scratch?

You're like a superhero. Where's your cape?

After tonight... I'm pretty sure that's you.

Think about it.

Pretty good shot.
Burns a lot of calories.

- I'd like to meet you guys.
- These are the best guys I know.

Thank you.

- Thank you.
- Well done.

- Thank you, sir.
- Really.

Thank you, sir.

Anything I should know
before I talk to the press?

Not about this operation, sir.

Hey, how do I look?

With your mouth open or closed?

Glad to see you're in a
better mood, McGinnis.

It's okay.

Ah, captain.

We waited at the hospital
till Julio's mother got there.

Then we left.

I'm still going. How is he?

He's... upset.

From the... the pain?

No. His mother. She drives him crazy.

And he just bought that suit.

Spent a lot of money on it... for him.

Good night.

- Good night.
- Good night.

Oh, uh, captain, captain,

um, you know, if it weren't for you,

we'd probably still be
looking for those kids.

Now, tonight, when you can't sleep

because you're worried about Julio...

Remember that.

How are you doing?

Almost done.

All... All of these girls,

and no one knows where they are,

or... or if... If they'll ever be found?

So many of them, so few of us.

Look, um...

If you still... want to adopt me...

I'm good with it.

Really? Are you... you sure?

Because I don't want to...
I don't want to press.

Yeah, I-if...
if I ever end up in a box like this,

I'd like to know that there's at least

one person out there who'd go look for me.

Oh, I would look for you.

And I would find you.

Thank you.
