MacGyver (1985–1992): Season 7, Episode 3 - Obsessed - full transcript

In a controversial move, the Phoenix Foundation is assigned security during deposed the Latin Amercian dictator Pablo Delasora's U.S. human rights violations trial. Pete, in charge, just can't have McGyver publicly claiming, without actual evidence, to have seen the presumably-dead Murdoc, so he pretends to fire Mac. It turns out there is a major plot to bring the general back into power, but Mac gets captured at the rocket launch site used by Delasora's cohorts.

Going all to pieces, MacGyver.

Oh, man.

Hello?

Pleasant
dreams, MacGyver.

He has recurring
nightmares, attention lapses.

He... he also seems to be suffering
from delusions and paranoia.

"Symptoms
of job-related stress."

There. You see my concern?

Come in.

Hey, Pete. How you doing?

Oh, adjusting.

Thanks to modern
technology, I'm still getting stuck

with my share of the paperwork.

Oh, I think you know
Cindy Finnegan, don't you?

She's my new
manager of field operations.

Yeah, sure. Hi.

This is Dr. Darnell's psychological
fitness assessment on you, MacGyver.

He's worried about you. So am I.

Well, it's nothing a good night's
sleep wouldn't take care of.

If I could get one.

You know, according
to your service file,

your behavior has
become most alarming,

ever since the
death of this, uh...

Murdoc?

Exactly.

Miss Finnegan, the
chairman only appointed you

to this position
a few weeks ago.

So you don't know
MacGyver very well.

And you didn't know
murdoc. Because if you did,

You would understand
MacGyver's concern.

Well, that may be,
but murdoc is dead.

His body was found in the river

At the bottom of a mineshaft.

There certainly wasn't much
left to identify, was there?

Well, the FBI and
Interpol were convinced.

Now why can't you accept it?

Because every time I
think murdoc is dead,

he comes back.

Oh, you're obsessed.

You don't know murdoc!

Hold it. Time out, all right?

MacGyver,

Dr. Darnell is concerned
that you are headed

For a first-class
case of job burnout.

Pete, I'm okay.

Yeah, well, okay
isn't good enough.

Look, in just one hour,

Pablo delasora arrives
at the courthouse.

The Phoenix foundation cannot
afford to have our operative

In charge of his security
preoccupied with ghosts.

The security is all in place.

Everything's been taken care of.

Mr. Thornton,

in light of the controversy
about the Phoenix foundation

handling the security
for the delasora trial,

I feel sure that the
chairman of the board

would want me to check out
MacGyver's arrangements,

Just to be sure that
everything is okay.

Miss Finnegan, one thing I
do is know my people very well,

Especially MacGyver.

And I trust him 100%.

No. Pete, you know, it's okay.

In fact, I insist.

Fine. I'll drive.

Your car hasn't been
cleared through security.

I'll drive.

Fine.

So, we've got

guards stationed on every roof

within two blocks
of the courthouse.

Check.

And a guard on the inside

and the outside
of the courtroom.

Check. Also, men on every floor,

linked by radios
equipped with scramblers?

Check.

Now, the police should be
diverting traffic to make way

for the motorcade's
route to the jail.

Yeah, except it's a
dummy motorcade.

Check. Meanwhile,
an unmarked car

will take delasora

on a secret route to
our secured location?

Check, check, check.

Okay.

See? Everything's under control.

Everything, huh?

Oh, come on.

Stryke!

I thought we agreed to keep
the media down to a minimum.

Yeah, delasora's
lawyer had other ideas.

He demanded full media coverage.

We lost.

Oh, um, Cindy
Finnegan, this is...

Bob stryke from the
federal prosecutor's office.

Yes, I know,
I've read your file.

It is my job.

MacGyver, miss Finnegan,
this is marietta roblas.

She's helping us
coordinate the evidence

for delasora's trial.

Oh, there he is.

Look at him.

He's gained
weight on your prison food,

While the country, he and
his generals looted, is starving.

Even stripped of his
power, he's a monster.

How do you view
your chances in an American court?

This trial should
never have happened.

I was kidnapped from
my country by your government,

To face these
preposterous charges.

But, I am confident
that my lawyer

will prove them groundless.

I am an innocent man.

And being innocent, I
know I have nothing to fear

in a true court of law.

What is your
government's reaction?

Look out!

What are you doing?

I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

MacGyver, what happened?

He was here.

- Who?
- Murdoc.

Murdoc?

Miss Finnegan, what
is going on out there?

Where's MacGyver?

He's looking for ghosts.

That's right, Mr. Thornton,
you heard me.

He's about 5'8",

uh, wearing a gray
jacket, a blue shirt.

He had a camera.

Are you sure?

I mean, he was
almost right next to you.

Can't help you.

Sorry, MacGyver.

We can't find a trace of a dart.

No, it's gotta be
around here somewhere.

I saw him load and fire
it from a phony camera.

Who is this murdoc, anyway?

Who was murdoc is more like it.

Mr. Thornton would
like to speak with you.

Uh, I gave him a full briefing.

Yeah, I'll bet.

Uh, Pete, I know
how this sounds.

MacGyver, the last thing the
Phoenix foundation needs right now

is any more controversy

over this delasora
security arrangement.

You understand?

We are all being
watched, especially me.

Pete, if murdoc
is after delasora,

we've got a lot
more to worry about

Than the foundation's image.

Murdoc is dead.

No!

No, he's not.

I don't know how,

but he's not dead, I saw him.

That doctor is right.
You do need a rest,

And you are going to get it.

Now go home. Get some sleep.

What?

MacGyver, as a
friend, listen to me.

I am convinced that
Cindy's whole job here

is to keep me under observation,

to evaluate my performance.

This has nothing to do with you.

Yes, it does.

I still have to prove myself.

And she's already turned in
a report on your obsession.

Neither one of us
have any credibility right now.

Look, MacGyver, do me a favor.

Drop the murdoc thing

for both our sakes?

The president
is expected to veto the bill.

In other news, there was
unexpected excitement today

when Pablo delasora
arrived in court.

An overzealous member of the
Phoenix foundation security team

attacked a news reporter
he suspected was trying

To kill the former
central American dictator.

Delasora was shaken but unhurt.

The incident has prompted
renewed controversy

about Washington's decision

to employ the
Phoenix foundation,

a privately owned organization

To provide security
for delasora...

Come and get me, MacGyver.

What's wrong, MacGyver?

Starting to see ghosts?

What kind of game are
you playing, murdoc?

Dead men don't play games.

I'm gonna make you
wish you never killed me.

Stop!

Get away from the car.

MacGyver! What are you doing?

Just get away. Stay back.

It's a chess piece.

A pawn.

It's a message from murdoc.

A message?

Yeah, he's telling
me I've been used.

But why was it taped to my car?

To throw me off track. Come on.

Hold it.

Hey, delasora, your chow's here.

Bon appetit.

Stryke.

Murdoc could be in the hotel.

Get delasora out of there, now!

Miss Finnegan.

Get to delasora's room.
Tell him to evacuate now.

What's wrong?

MacGyver insists murdoc
is still after delasora.

This obsession of his is
really getting out of hand.

Miss Finnegan, now!

Honestly, if I ever hear
the name murdoc again,

I swear...

We have an
incident on the first floor.

No, Mr. Chairman,
the general was not hurt.

He was in another room
when the bomb went off.

Yes, sir, we did lose
one man. Jake Gibbs.

Yes, we are
staying on top of it.

I'm so sorry about your man.

It's such a waste.

I knew Jake Gibbs
for more than 20 years.

In fact, I brought him
over from dxs with me

When I came to the Phoenix.

He was a good man.

That is how it always
goes with delasora.

During our revolution,
he always survived

while innocent people were hurt.

I wish that bomb had succeeded.

No, you don't mean that.

People like delasora

Have to stand
trial for their crimes.

You know, it's not like
murdoc to miss twice.

I sent a team to that address

you gave us, MacGyver.

They found, and I quote,

"an empty room in
an empty building."

Well, obviously
murdoc cleaned it out.

Can't you give your
paranoia a rest?

Yeah, and who do you
think planted the bomb, huh?

Don't you think it would
be wise to start looking

for suspects who are
still among the living?

All right.

I just got word from
my office in Washington.

Uh, sorry, Thornton, the
Phoenix foundation's off the case.

What are
you talking about?

They can't just fire us!

Washington's already
taken too much heat

Over using a private
organization for delasora's security.

Especially one with the director
of field operations who's disabled.

You mean blind?

Listen, my vision has
nothing to do with this.

That may be, but after this
we have no choice. You're out.

You know, with
murdoc after delasora,

you're gonna need help.

Yes, well, we've got it.

A crack special forces
squad is being flown in

to reactivate an old
military base outside town.

They'll house
delasora there during the trial,

so he'll be safe.
Even from dead men.

Oh, come on.

Miss roblas?

The chairman is
just gonna love this.

I hope you're satisfied.

You know, if you
could drop the attitude

for just a split second,
you might realize

that I could be
right about murdoc.

Murdoc, murdoc,
god, you are obsessed!

Mr. Thornton, are
you going to stand by

and let this man continue to
turn the Phoenix foundation

into a laughingstock?

No, I'm not.

Pete?

MacGyver, I can't let
my personal feelings

override my better
judgment any longer.

As of now, you're no longer
working for the Phoenix foundation.

And that is final.

Well, good management
decision, Pete.

Delasora
claimed the bomb

that miraculously
spared his life

may have been
planted by terrorists

sent by the new
government of El santori.

The accusation was
strongly denied by Washington

and president
Garcia of El santori.

Immediately
following the incident,

Delasora's lawyer asked...

Come on in, Pete.

To get an extension
of the trial date,

stating he wants to insure
his client's personal safety.

What a cab driver I just had.

And I like cab drivers.

This one just tried to
take me for an extra $7

on the fare over here.
Can you believe that?

And I'm carrying a white cane.

Good thing I counted the
ticks on the meter, huh?

Hey, how did you
know that was me?

Pete, we've been
friends a long time.

Oh.

You mean my
performance back there

was pretty easy to
see through, huh?

Uh-huh.

Gonna have to
work on my delivery.

Your delivery was just fine.

Cindy bought it, that's all
that counts. Come on, sit down.

Well, listen, I had
to do something,

to get her off my
back, and yours.

American
justice system, by murdering

the accused ex-dictator.

Meanwhile, federal authorities

have taken control of
delasora's trial security

from the Phoenix foundation.

Though making no
official statement...

Can we cut that off?

Gladly.

Listen, when I first
had to admit to myself

that I was going blind,

I also had to tell myself
that I could still do my job.

That it was my experience and
my... my judgment that counted.

Not just my eyes.

You were right.

Yeah, but I still
have to prove it.

Listen, this whole
thing reeks of murdoc,

I know that.

But every move I make,

I run into Cindy, or the
chairman of the board.

I need your help, MacGyver.

They have... they have
got my hands tied on this.

Well, you obviously
untied mine for a reason.

What do you have in mind?

All right.

If it is murdoc, who
is he working for?

That I don't know.

But we might want to consider

those high-level security risks

that Washington
was so worried about.

Exactly.

Maybe it's time that somebody

paid an unannounced
visit to that army base

That delasora's being held at.

All technicians
report to control center.

Repeat, all technicians
report to control center.

Attention, prepare to
begin final operation.

Excuse me.

Attention, all personnel.

All personnel, report
to the launch site.

30 seconds to test firing.

Non-essential personnel,

clear the starboard blast zone.

Test phase completed.

All personnel, prepare
for full-launch countdown.

Oye! They need an extra hand

in the command center.

Hold it right there, amigo.

Turn around.

Well, well...

At ease, MacGyver.

So, the revolutionary
has become a bureaucrat.

Oh, yes, I recognize you.

From your days with
the guerilla forces.

I make a point to
remember all my enemies.

You must have a
very good memory.

Do not upset me!

Or I will not let you
live long enough to see

how I will destroy your
ridiculous new government.

What do you mean?

It means that tonight
president delasora

will once again assume
the reigns of power

in El santori.

In less than
an hour, troops loyal to me

will attack the capital
and regain control.

No, the people will stop you.

The people?

The people are sheep.

They will do nothing,

when they see your
government reduced to rubble,

thanks to general
murdoc's missile.

MacGyver!

You okay?

Well, MacGyver, it appears
that the military look is in.

Of course, I have
more accessories.

A little early for
Halloween, isn't it, murdoc?

You must show more
respect for general murdoc.

General?

Don't you need
a country for that?

My commission
will become official

When delasora takes power.

Murdoc, you've
always worked alone.

What made you a team
man all of a sudden?

Well, MacGyver, times change.

Homicide. International
trust decided

that I was over the hill.

So, faced with few
employment prospects, well,

I decided to

be all that I can be.

Is the missile ready to launch?

On your order, sir.

Good.

Then, I will make an
example of these two.

They'll be the first casualties
of my return to power.

Organize a firing squad.

Blew it again, huh, murdoc?

Is that supposed to
be a joke, MacGyver?

No.

You're the joke.

Think about it.

All the times you've
tried to kill me,

you've done nothing but fail.

Now you need a
firing squad to do it for you?

How weak is that?

Carry out your order, general.

By all means.
I'll shoot the girl.

However...

I would like to find
a more inventive way

of executing MacGyver.

All personnel, secure
the launch station.

I think you're gonna find this
most intriguing, MacGyver.

The army took this off
the line back in the '60s,

Brought the whole
thing back from Europe.

This, of course, has
been in storage for years.

I love these old
rockets, they're so solid.

I gotta know, murdoc.

The body they found? Who was it?

Ah. Well,

the river under the mineshaft
surfaced about a mile away.

I swam out, I came
across a fisherman,

he didn't have much luck. I did.

But, you know, MacGyver, I
convinced everyone that I was dead.

Except for you.

But, that gave me the idea

to go to delasora with my plan.

Now I knew there was controversy

Surrounding your
involvement with trial security.

Well,

It was an opportunity
that I couldn't miss.

So you used me to
discredit the foundation.

Absolutely.

Stellar performance.
It was perfect.

Congratulations.

Tie him under the
rocket, could you?

You are pigs!

Well...

when the countdown is
over, the jets will ignite

and when the missile hits
an altitude of 2,000 feet,

the rocket fuel booster will
ignite and deliver a ton of tnt

To the capital of El santori.

Right under the doorstep
of the presidential palace.

And you, MacGyver,
well, you'll be toast.

Secure for launch.

You know, MacGyver, I...

I've been wasting my
talents all these years.

I mean, one target at a time,

It's sort of a...
a dead-end job.

Now I've... I've... I've found something
better than just killing for money.

Killing for money and power.

Goodbye, MacGyver.

Yes. Yes.

Come here.

No!

God.

Take a good look, miss roblas.

This is the beginning of the end

for your pathetic government.

Have the command
center radio El santori

and order our troops
to launch their attack

at precisely 1400 hours.

Butcher!

Proceed with the execution.

Ready.

Aim.

MacGyver! It has to be him.

Deal with him later. Kill her.

Jump!

Get back to your posts!
Don't let them escape!

I have an idea. Come on.

I think I know
where they're going.

We must go back!

What?

Delasora's troops are
attacking the capital.

We can radio my government

from the command center

and warn them. Please, vamos!

Hey.

This whole thing's
gone sour. I want out.

This is not the time to panic.

I'm calling in our
deal. I want my money!

I anticipated your
wish, Mr. Stryke.

General, you did arrange
for Mr. Stryke's payment?

I took the Liberty of
putting it in his car.

Right. Adios.

Ugh!

And now for MacGyver.

You're so predictable, MacGyver.

Always trying to save
everybody but yourself.

I told you, your
humanity would be

the death of you one day.

Shall I?

That will not be necessary.

Disarm this man!

What is this?

Do you think I
stayed in power so long

trusting the likes of you?

You are nothing but
a liability to me now.

Take him out and shoot him.

This isn't over,
delasora. You'll regret this.

I don't need a
missile to take power.

I still have troops
marching on the capital.

So, you see, your efforts
have changed nothing.

Well, that takes care
of general murdoc.

Now, for you.

Get on the radio.
Call your capital.

Where are you going?

After murdoc.

He's dead.

I don't think so.

MacGyver!

Oh, Pete.

What time is it?

Listen, I'm sorry, MacGyver,

But uh, I thought
you'd wanna hear.

Delasora's troops
have surrendered.

And the delasora trial is
gonna start up again next week.

I mean, it's a little bit late,

but he's gonna
get his day in court.

Well, that's terrific.
Thanks, Pete.

Uh, Cindy sends her apologies.

You know, I think she
has learned a little bit

About respecting experience.

Will wonders never cease?

You could have told me this
over the phone, you know.

Well, yeah, I could
have, but, uh...

But you've got something
important to tell me?

Well, i-i-it's not
that important,

it's... it's just that I

Thought you'd wanna
hear it in person.

Spit it out, Pete.

Well, look, it's
not that important.

They didn't find
murdoc's body, did they?

No.

But that doesn't mean anything.

I mean, his body could
have been consumed

In the heat of that
fire. It was very intense.

Or maybe the whole thing
got washed away in the tide.

Hello?

Hello?

What's the matter? You got
trouble on the line or something?

Yeah.

Or something.
