MacGyver (1985–1992): Season 6, Episode 4 - Twenty Questions - full transcript

MacGyver's friend Lisa has started drinking to cope with her personal problems. She hangs with some other people who unbeknown est to her are breaking into some wealthy people's homes and robbing them. One of their break ins ends up with someone getting killed. And evidence is found that points to Lisa. While Mac believes she didn't have any part in the killing, he senses she is holding something back and learns of her drinking. He tries to help her. But the people who break in are worried she might point the finger at them so they try to get rid of her.

To the Wilsons,

and the snows of
mount Kilimanjaro.

To the Wilsons.

Really nice place...

Hey, Brett. Get a load of this.

Your little friend
is out like a light.

I couldn't get rid of her, okay?

Relax.

What she doesn't
know won't hurt her.

Uh-oh. Trouble.

The maid.

Uh, I thought you said
you checked on the maid.

It's her day off.
I saw her leave.

Yeah, right.

All right, nobody panic.

I'll grab the loot,
you guys split.

We'll meet back at the club.

- Lisa.

- Lisa.
- Huh?

Lisa, come on.

Come on, Lisa. We
got to get out of here.

All right.

Who are you? What do you want?

What do you want?

Thanks for comin' at
this late hour.

I'm really sorry to drag
you down here, MacGyver.

Well, did you get
a name on this kid?

No. She still insists
she'll only talk to you.

Nobody else.

Well, that's weird.

Yeah, I think she's involved
in that string of burglaries

out on royal beach.

Uh-oh. Here we go.

Hi, MacGyver.

Lisa?

Uh, Lisa who?

Woodman.

Her father's Eric woodman.

Oh, that big wall street guy.

Whoopee.

You want to tell me
what's goin' on here?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

That's why I had them call
you instead of my parents.

At least you'll listen.

Uh, thanks.

All right, so sit
down. I'm listening.

I did not break into
Darlene's house.

She's my friend. I know
where she hides her house key.

I'm on the outs with
my parents, okay?

This afternoon
they freaked me out.

They could yell and shout all
they wanted to. I was out of there.

I knew the Wilsons were on
vacation, so I crashed at their place.

Uh, uh, detective Kiley
said there was a burglary?

Yeah, and a maid was
hurt. He won't let me forget it.

But I didn't do it, MacGyver.

I might have left the door
unlocked, but I was so tired.

All I could think about
was goin' to sleep.

Oh, yeah. Booze
does that to you.

You were drinking?

How many times do I
have to tell you people?

I ate a bunch of candy cordials.

You know the kind with
the real liquor in the middle?

That's what they
smelled on my breath.

Uh-huh. Yeah.

MacGyver, have
I ever lied to you?

What took
you guys so long?

Whoo! Was that a trip!

That was close.

Too close.

Aw, come on, Holly,
that's what it's all about.

The excitement. The hunt.

Or as my old man,
Arthur b. Reynolds,

the great white
hunter would say,

"The thrill of the hunt."

I don't think my folks would
ever cut me off without a dime

like your father did.

Well, you didn't
flunk out of Stanford.

Oh, no, no, wait a minute here.

I didn't flunk out.

I mean, you've got to
go to classes to flunk out.

Brett, your dad
was paying the bills.

He had the money.

You know, my dad
used to always say,

"get a job, do somethin'
with that brain of yours."

Well, I'm usin' it.

Here, put this
with the other stuff.

Where's Lisa?

Beats me. Once we split the
house, everybody was on their own.

Why don't you give her a call,
make sure she got home okay.

What's happening? I
thought we were out of here.

Adam, come on, we just scored!

Kick back, savor the moment.

We're cool here.

The maid answered.
She's not at home.

You didn't say anything? No.

I knew we shouldn't
have let her tag along.

I didn't hear anybody complaining
when Lisa paid for all the beer.

Hey, she's the one that wanted to
impress us with all her credit cards.

Time-out.

Holly will talk to her at
school tomorrow, okay?

It'll be fine.

And if it isn't?

Then Lisa's got a
problem, doesn't she?

Lisa?

Look at you!

Where have you been, young lady?

Out.

MacGyver, what...

- What are you doing here?
- Uh...

Can we talk?

Well, sure. In here.

We were worried sick.

Sure you were.

Lisa, don't start!

Start what?

I'm flattered you even
noticed I was gone.

Look at your hair.

Uh, Katherine, Eric,
I think that can wait.

What MacGyver is trying
to say is I've been busted.

Busted?

A house was robbed
and a maid assaulted.

The police found
Lisa inside. Asleep.

Huh, naturally
you think I'm guilty.

Which I am not!

You were with Holly
again, weren't you?

We know you weren't in
school today. They called.

I got Lisa released into my
custody, but there will be a hearing.

Oh, lord.

Sorry if it's an inconvenience.

That's it, young lady. You
go up to your room right now.

This minute, go!

Like I told you, MacGyver,
we don't get along too well.

Will somebody tell me
what's goin' on here?

I wish I knew.

We're at our wits end.

You should have seen
her last report card.

- Three "d's" and two "f's."
- Lisa?

Not to mention, 15
unexcused absences.

Well, what is it?
What's goin' on?

You have good reason
to be concerned, MacGyver.

Lisa woodman lied to you.

We contacted the Wilsons.

There's no daughter
named Darlene

And they've never heard of Lisa.

And about her not drinking?

Take a look at the
arresting officer's report.

"Pronounced odor of alcohol,
slurred speech, poor coordination."

Yeah. It takes a lot more than
candy cordials to get that ripped.

Well, that could
explain her behavior.

Uh, let me guess.

Lying, problems at home,

rotten grades, new friends.

Alcohol related?

It's nothing new.

Five million American
kids abuse alcohol

By the time they
hit the 12th grade.

Look, MacGyver, I hate
to, uh, burst your bubble,

But whatever the reason,
Lisa was in on the Wilson job.

Meaning she better pray that
maid makes it out of intensive care.

Lisa, wait up!

- Holly.

I've been looking
all over for you.

What happened yesterday?

Nothing happened. Why?

You didn't know I was arrested?

Arrested? Where?

At the Wilson house.

Lisa, no.

How come you guys
didn't wake me up?

We did. You must
have fallen back asleep.

The police said the
place was robbed.

And a maid pushed
down a flight of stairs.

Holly, I can't
remember anything.

It wasn't us, was it?

Really, Lisa...

I mean, partying at a
friend's beach house

without permission is one thing,

but robbing and hurting
someone? No way.

Somebody must have broken
in while you were zonked out.

That's what I told the police.

What else did you tell them?

Lisa?

MacGyver.

Meet my best friend, Holly.

Hi.

Holly's a senior. And
head cheerleader.

What are you doing here?

I'd like to talk to you. Maybe
I can give you a ride home?

Well, gotta run. See you, Lisa.

I'm the only 9th grader
Holly even talks to.

Is that good?

Never mind. You
wouldn't understand.

Yeah, there seems to
be a lot I don't understand.

Oh. Well, what now?

Well, you lied to me yesterday.

I'd like to know why.

And the police report said

you smelled of alcohol,
your speech was slurred,

And your coordination was lousy.

What else am I
supposed to think?

Okay, I lied. There.
Are you happy?

No.

I wanna know what
really happened.

I cut classes to go
to a beach party.

There was a lot of
beer and stuff and...

Well, I didn't wanna be
a drag, so I had a few.

Yeah. Then what?

I got sick, then I got sleepy.

Someone said the Wilson
house had an open window.

So I climbed in and looked
for a place to lie down and die.

That's all I can remember.

Now, why didn't you tell that
to the police in the first place?

And let my mother and
father know I'd been drinking?

Come on, MacGyver,
what's the big deal?

Didn't you experiment
when you were a kid?

Yeah. Once. When I was 11.

You see?

Freddie mapes and
I put away a six-pack

in less than an hour one time.

You got loaded?

Yeah.

I kept telling myself
it tasted great.

But all of a sudden I didn't
know what I was doing.

I couldn't walk straight,
I couldn't talk straight.

For me, there was
nothing to like about it.

Freddie liked it just fine.

So much so that it
cost us our friendship.

Because he wasn't
as perfect as you?

No.

Because five years
later he got drunk

and wrapped his
dad's car around a tree.

His girlfriend is
now a paraplegic.

And Freddie is dead.

You really think I have a
drinking problem, don't you?

- I don't know.
- Well, I don't!

I was just doing what every
other kid does. Including you.

All right. Fine.

But will you do me a favor?

I want you to
take a little test.

It's called "twenty
questions for adolescents."

A lot of schools are
starting to use this approach.

It's kind of new.

They're just trying to get the
kids to be honest with themselves.

So, there's no lecturing,
no hassling, no parents.

Just you and the pencil.

"Do you use alcohol or
drugs to build self-confidence?"

If anybody should take
this test, it's my mother.

Lisa, this isn't about
anybody else. It's about you.

Now, come on, it'll only
take a couple of minutes.

Then I'll take you
home, all right?

"do you ever drink or get high

"immediately after
you have a problem

"at home or at school?" No way.

"Have you ever missed
school due to alcohol or drugs?"

You can relax, MacGyver,
I'm not an alcoholic.

Lisa!

Up here, please.

Excuse us a moment,
MacGyver. Eric's in his study.

David, trust me.

We're the only game in town.

All right, you, too.

MacGyver.

- Eric, I 'd like to talk to you about Lisa.
- Again?

Lisa's all we talk
about around here.

Yeah, well, I think I know why.

Well, glad somebody
does. I'm all ears.

She's been drinking.

How much and for how long, I
don't know. But it could be a problem.

Lisa drinking?

Impossible. We would've known.

Eric, I know it
sounds like a cliche,

but sometimes parents
are the last to know.

The warning signs

What warning signs?

The lying, staying
out till all hours,

mood changes,
sudden drop in grades.

Daddy!

it looks like
you're falling apart.

MacGyver thinks Lisa's
becoming an alcoholic.

- Oh, Eric!
- What?

I hate you, MacGyver!

I hate you!

All I said was that she
could have a problem.

A teenager can abuse
alcohol and not be an alcoholic.

In fact, some researchers say it
could start with a defective gene.

I beg your pardon?

Are you suggesting
alcoholism runs in the family?

That is a horrible thing to say!

I'm not being judgmental here.

I think it's time
you left, MacGyver.

I'm just trying to help!

Well, I'll tell you how you can
