MacGyver (1985–1992): Season 6, Episode 14 - Eye of Osiris - full transcript

MacGyver is helping archaeologists to find the tomb of Alexander The Great, but soon learns that they are not the only ones out there looking for it.

On! Ten!

You beat, if you can.

MacGyver.

If he gets in the way, kill him.

Okay, hand me the cup.

On iki. Twelve.

Is yours. You can keep.

You run like a yellow coward.

You know what I came for.

I'll stake all of this against
what you wear around your neck.

Or is kurush afraid of a woman?

Well, fair is fair,
right, big guy?

All right.

Just hold it, big
fella. Fair is fair.

Let's keep it friendly.
What do you say?

Evet.

As you say. Friendly.

Evet. Evet?

Friendly!

Get off me, you creep!

- Feelin' lucky?
- What?

- You've got to be MacGyver from the Phoenix foundation.
- Right. Beth webb?

- Axford's assistant?
- Yes.

Let's make tracks.

Yes, ma'am.

This is great!

Professor axford
spent the past 30 years

Searching for the keys to
Alexander the great's tomb.

Now maybe we have them.

You know, I always thought
Alexander was buried in Egypt.

In Alexandria.

So do most of the so-called
conventional thinkers.

Professor axford is
definitely not one of those.

The real problem is,

the workers think we've been
cursed by the eye of osiris.

But there's no proof
that it ever really existed.

Professor axford says no
one's proved that it doesn't exist.

Well, he sounds
like a fascinating guy.

I'm looking forward
to meetin' him.

- Hurry it up, you lazy clods.

I want this contraption
finished and rigged by 0600.

Beth, where the
hell have you been?

You should have
been here hours ago.

We ran into some trouble.

Never mind about that.
Did you get the medallion?

I promised I'd come
through. Didn't I?

Yes, it is just as I expected.

The Syrian medallion.

It wasn't easy.

This is Mr. MacGyver
from the Phoenix foundation.

He helped me convince
kurush to part with it.

The Phoenix foundation?

Well, he must have
brought the Greek artifact

That pompous fraud,
lord keene, dug up.

Make yourself useful,
girl. Get the third piece.

I understand you're
something of an archaeologist.

Where did you study?

Well, uh, actually, I'm kinda,

self-taught.

Self-educated men usually
have fools for teachers.

Are you familiar with
Alexander the great?

Well, he conquered persia
and most of the ancient world,

About 320 b.C.

Well, I'm going to have to further
your education, Mr. Macgregor.

Ptolemy was one of
Alexander's three most trusted generals.

He buried this at siwa.

The last time these
objects were together

was more than 2,200 years ago.

When our three generals
sealed Alexander in his tomb,

with the eye of osiris.

Now, how do you know that?

I have it on the best authority.

Here we are,
the emperor's seal.

- Alexander?
- Yes, his last will and testament.

In it he says that the oracle
from siwa confirmed he was a god,

and entrusted him with the eye.

He took it on his
march to persia.

And conquered the world?

No.

Alexander ordered ptolemy
and the others to build a tomb

in these mountains
using Egyptian workers,

So he could keep
the eye for eternity.

"The tomb shall be built

"in the birthplace of the gods,

"where the eye fell to earth,

"In the shadow of
the pillars of osiris."

What are they?

Well, my guess is
an ancient temple.

Now, these, uh,

hieroglyphics describe
the legend of osiris.

It tells of a heavenly battle
between osiris and the evil god, Seth.

Osiris is killed, then reborn.

He dashes his eye down from
the sky, bringing light to the world.

Legend says when the eye fell,

the earth sang and
the mountains danced.

Mmm-hmm, very melodramatic.

But I think this may be the key
to finding and entering the tomb.

Where's the flaming map, girl?

You put it in the trunk.

Anything to this eye being blue?

Nobody knows.

The ancient Egyptians
had dark eyes.

Why they decided to worship
a blue one is a mystery.

The, uh, the disc it's
in. Is that a sun symbol?

It's called an aton.

Only, I've never
seen it like this before.

It's upside-down. The rays
usually point the other way.

Just below it here, it says,

"to enter the tomb, you
must pay tribute to Anubis."

Anubis.

Um, judge of the netherworld.

That's right.

"To find the eye of osiris,
you must find the keys of life.

"But beware the
curse of the eye.

"woe to all but the pure of heart
who pass through the maze of the eye,

"For they shall be cursed to wander
blind in the world of the dead forever."

Rubbish!

Poetry to scare
off tomb robbers.

Here's where we're
concentrating our search.

Frankly, I was lost
until my latest find.

I find that it fits in with
this line on the plaque.

"None shall find or enter
the tomb of Alexander

"without the favor of re."

Re? Um, Egyptian sun god.

Yes. We'll be waking him
first thing in the morning.

All right! Bring it up!

What do
you think of him?

He's incredible.

Mmm-hmm.

I believe his
temple below was put here

By the workers who
built Alexander's tomb.

As a landmark, a
signpost, if you will.

And that Mason's tool,

The ancient Egyptian symbol of
builders and craftsmen, pointed the way.

Which way is that?

As situated below, the
statue was facing west.

And ancient cultures believed
the land of the dead lay to the west.

Magnificent.

Nearly 2,000 years
of history, wiped out!

Can't you dunderheads
rig a simple hoist?

Of all the incompetence!

Do you have any idea
what you've destroyed?

It is the curse of the eye.

Here, let me see.

What is it?

Some sort of marker
pointing to the temple below.

It certainly had nothing
to do with this accident.

Well, something did.

Maybe the workers are right.

I'm beginning to
think we are cursed.

I don't think a curse did this.

Sabotage? But why?

Good lord. The artifacts!

Get us out of here, quickly!

- Who are you?
- There is a universal truth.

He who has the gun
asks the questions.

Now, who are you, and why
are you interfering with my plan?

I left them in here. I know it.

Well they're not here now.
Someone's walked off with them.

How could you leave
those artifacts unguarded?

Without them, we may as
well all go home, right now.

Well, I wouldn't pack things
up just yet. Take a look here.

Hmm?

You can solidify things.
What do you think?

It'll never work. The weight of
the plaster will erase the image.

You're right.

Now, when the sugar dries, it should
make it hard enough to take a mold.

You imbecile.

I go to all the trouble of arranging
for MacGyver to join this expedition,

and you ruin everything.

You arranged it? But why?

Who are you?

Von leer. Nikolaus Von leer.

A famous name
on the black market.

You want the treasure from
Alexander's tomb like me.

The only treasure I
want is the eye of osiris.

Can't we work out some
arrangement? A partnership.

We have the plaque,
and Alexander's will.

What do I want with them, when
I can't even read hieroglyphics?

Or ancient Greek?

But I can.

Perhaps you aren't
such a fool after all.

Okay, here goes.

It worked.

No, the images are faint.

Still, I suppose
it'll have to do.

You know, we're still
working in the dark

Without Alexander's will.
We've got to get it back.

I'll go and see if the guards have
any information about the thief.

You're welcome.

Dealing with people
isn't his strong suit.

Oh, give me a break. He's
pompous, arrogant and rude.

Why do you put up with him?

I have to. He's my father.

I thought you said
your name was webb.

Mom's maiden name.

She left him when I was
little, raised me in the states.

I saw him all of three times
when I was growing up.

When mom passed away, I...

I begged him to let me
come on this expedition.

Trying to make up for lost time?

All he ever thinks
about is finding

Alexander's tomb and the eye.

It's like he's possessed.

West. West.

Where you taking that thing?

Um...

I'd like to take the sno-cat
and check out an idea.

Well, you'd better
take Beth with you.

- I don't think she's feeling up to it.
- Is she sick?

More like upset.

Don't you think you're a
little tough on her sometimes?

I treat her no differently
than any other colleague.

Why don't you try treating
her like a daughter once?

If Beth wants to succeed in
archeology, she'll have to do it mentally,

not biologically.

All she wants is encouragement.

How I conduct this expedition and
my family life is none of your affair!

"The eye of osiris fell.

"The earth sang and
the mountains danced."

Mountains danced.

Yeah, of course.

Don't ever sneak into
my tent again, Von leer.

It's preferable to
your father seeing us.

We don't him to discover
our partnership, do we?

I want you to keep me informed
of MacGyver's every move.

I only agreed to sell you
photographs of Alexander's tomb.

I'm no spy.

Perhaps we should
dissolve our partnership.

Simply repay the
money I advanced you.

But then, with all those debts
your poor, late mother left.

You know what you are, Von leer?

A leech.

We both want the same things.

To see your photographs
published all over the world,

And to see axford's face
when you steal his thunder.

Beth? I'd like to
have a word with you.

What's wrong?

I want to apologize.

For the way I've
been snapping at you.

You see, I've spent my
life as an archaeologist.

Being a father is

New to me. I...

Where did you get off to?

I found a field of
tektites just west of here.

Ah.

Uh, rocks.

Fused by heat.

Well, there hasn't been any
volcanic activity here since the ice age.

No, not volcanic.
Something more powerful.

Powerful enough to
create the eye of osiris.

Will you please explain
what you're raving about?

I'll do better than that.
I'll show you. Come on.

Well done, MacGyver.

Very well done indeed.

This is absolutely
preposterous, MacGyver.

How can these rocks of yours
help us find Alexander's tomb?

It's all in the legend.

"When the eye of osiris fell, the
earth sang and the mountains danced."

That could be describing
a natural disaster.

- Maybe the song was something else.
- Such as?

An explosion.

And seismic shocks would sure make
the mountains seem like they were dancing.

An earthquake?

No. Uh-uh.

Tektites are fused rocks created
by entry burn and impact velocity.

A meteorite.

Exactly.

Here, take a look here.

See this depression?

From the way the crater's
blended into the terrain,

I'd say it hit 4 or
5,000 years ago.

- Which is when the legend began.
- Yeah.

And by the time Alexander came
around, a few thousand years later,

the story had blown
into a full-scale religion.

All fits, doesn't it?

Ancient people would see a
meteorite as a sign from the gods.

So if we find where
the meteorite landed,

that's where we'll
find Alexander's tomb?

The crater's huge! How
can we search all of it?

Well...

Judging from the
rim of the crater,

the meteorite's impact
point would be right there.

Rim of the crater due
west would be right there.

Well, this is your western rim.

What now?

Well, you think those
could be the pillars of osiris?

My god, they could be!

Get the equipment
quickly, and the artifacts.

Pillars are manmade.

Perfectly camouflaged.

Look here.

Pupil of the eye.

- Well, it looks like it goes in quite a ways.
- Keyhole, perhaps?

But what's the key?

Maybe you're holding
it in your hand there.

Of course.

"None shall find or enter the
tomb without the favor of re."

Well, so much for re.

Why don't you do
the honors, professor?

We're the first people
here in over 2,000 years.

Isn't that on the
plaque, all that stuff?

It's called a djed.
The tree of life.

The bars on top represent
earth, air, fire and water.

The four elements.

Anubis.

Alexander!

After all these years.

Von leer:
Congratulations, professor.

You too, MacGyver.

You played your role perfectly.

Hakim.

Him I know. Who are you?

You may recognize the
name. Nikolaus Von leer.

Von leer.

As in erich Von leer!

My dear departed
brother, thanks to you.

What's going on, Von leer?
This wasn't part of our deal.

Deal?

Beth, what are you saying?

I agreed to sell him
photographs of the tomb.

Well, if he's anything like his brother,
he's after more than just pictures.

It was a simple matter
of combining my money

with her resentment
of you, old man.

And now, Mr. MacGyver, if
you'll kindly open the sarcophagus,

I'll take the eye of
osiris. And you, help him.

It's empty!

I don't understand.

Egyptian security
system, to trap intruders.

Well, I'd say it worked.

The room is sealed.

We're in danger of running
out of oxygen. We'll suffocate.

Then we'll simply reduce
oxygen consumption.

No! Don't hurt her.

Don't worry, old man. You
and MacGyver will soon join her.

All right now, wait a minute,
wait a minute. Just hold it.

I think I can find
a way out of here.

But you've got to agree
not to hurt these two people.

Let him try, please.

Very well, MacGyver.

You find a way
out and they'll live.

Professor,

didn't the plaque say
something about Anubis?

Yes.

It says, "to enter the tomb,
one must pay tribute to Anubis."

Tribute...

Tribute.

I'm waiting, MacGyver.

These are all different weights.

It just must be a matter
of finding the right one.

Here. Look at this.

Anubis.

Way to go, Beth.

Very good.

you first, MacGyver,

in case our Egyptian friends
have more surprises waiting.

MacGyver, what do you see?

Is it Alexander's tomb?

I think you should
come see for yourself.

As Alexander himself said,

"this is what it
means to be a god."

Sunlight.

That vein of quartz must
run straight to the surface.

Von leer!

I'm stuck.

Yes, so it would seem.

No!

We had a deal!

Of course. Alexander's
tomb is yours. Forever.

Well, I see you've inherited
your brother's sense of loyalty.

How long before we also
have a tragic accident?

That depends on
your cooperation.

Why should we help you?

I know your kind,
MacGyver. You're an optimist,

who believes wherever
there is life there is hope.

Now, your only
hope of surviving this

is to open that coffin.

Open that coffin, Von leer,

And you may unleash
something the world isn't ready for.

I'll take that chance.

Or, I should say, I'll have
MacGyver take that chance for me.

I swear I didn't know
what Von leer was up to.

- I only made a deal with him so that I could...
- Make a fool of me.

Rob me of my discovery.

Yes, partly.

I needed the money. Mom
was s-sick before she died.

I didn't know. Why
didn't you ask my help?

- I...
- No, no.

Why should you?

Professor.

The djed symbolizes
the tree of life

And the rings, the elements
of nature, is that right?

The four elements, yes.

Come on up, professor, that way.

What is that?

That's fire.

And there's water.
Two of the elements.

If I understand the
riddle on the plaque,

These are two of the keys
needed to open that coffin.

Use the keys of life. Of course.

- The keys are the four elements of nature.
- But that's only two.

- Where are the other two, earth and air?
- Right there.

I think it takes all four
elements working together,

In order to get to
that lock mechanism.

First, fire.

Which heats the second element.

Water.

When it boils...

the air in the chamber
above cools the steam

so it condenses
on the top stone,

Which is the fourth
element, earth.

Alexander the great.

Is that stone
what I think it is?

A stony meteorite

made of aluminum silicate and
titanium enters the atmosphere,

- strikes the earth, and you've got...
- Corundum.

Sapphire, miss webb.

The biggest I've seen.

No wonder Alexander
tried to take it with him.

Von leer, don't...

Another trap!

We'll be crushed!

I think that's the idea!

Professor,

the plaque said to get out
we have to go through a maze.

The maze of the eye.

Give me the stone, Von leer.

You want to be buried with
it for another 3,000 years?

There's our way out!

Come on!

Von leer, no!

The eye is mine!

Run!

Oh, what happened?

We're trapped
beneath that rock. Sealed in.

Keys of life.

Well,

maybe they can help
us out of here, too.

Go! Get out!

Home safe and sound.

Thanks to you, MacGyver.

And everything you've worked
for is gone. Thanks to me.

I think it's time we
put the past behind us.

Besides, there are some
things that are better left buried.

You know, I read an essay once
by an archaeologist, who said

He wasn't interested in
finding artifacts and treasures.

He wanted to find the truth.

I wrote that.

Yeah. I know.
