Life Unexpected (2010–2011): Season 2, Episode 2 - Parents Unemployed - full transcript

When Cate and Baze are summoned to the principal's office at Lux's school, they are shocked to learn that Lux is failing and must make a drastic improvement in her grades or risk being kicked out. Meanwhile, after having the rug pulled out from under her at work, Cate starts the difficult process of looking for her next job, and in an effort to be a grown up, Baze decides to interview for a position at his father's firm.

Previously on life unexpected:

I'm looking for nathaniel bazile.

That's me. I'm your daughter.

You and someone had a kid.

You gave up that kid.

I am that kid.

And now I'm applying
for emancipation.

Cate Cassidy-- that's your mom.

I am Cate Cassidy.

Ryan and I have been up since 5:00.

And as usual, arguing since 6:00.

What are you doing here? Uh,
they're, um,

my birth parents.

I am not granting you emancipation.

I'm releasing you

back into their temporary

joint custody.

We're letting you go.

Go where?

We're firing you.

Ryan and Kelly debut tomorrow.

Will you marry me?

So before you end up
in something that's

hard to get out of,
make sure you want to be there.

I needed this.

I can't promise you forever.

Paige, Baze.

Hey, do you smell that?

Is... is that smoke? Is it the bar?

Paige. Hey, Cate!

Is Ryan here?

No. Your brother's
still at the station.

You've met Mr. Daniels.

You're a... Teacher.

RADIO ANNOUNCER: K100
starts your day

with something new-
it's the morning minus the madness

with Ryan Thomas,
and introducing his new cohost,

Kelly Campbell!

Hey! Look at you being
all domestic! Wow!

And what are you doing up so early?

Isn't one of the upsides
of getting canned

that you can sleep till noon?

Yeah. I have a meeting
with my agent.

And we've got Bruce on the line.

What do you got, Bruce?

Ryan, got to say, you traded up.

Kelly's a hoot. You know what?

Maybe I should just
pretend to be a virgin.

I mean, that seems
to be all the rage.

Well, every time I pretend,
guys think it's hot.

Ah, would you look at you--

in a dress!

Everything was dirty.

Nice boots.

Hey, Aunt Paige.

What? She asked me
to call her that.

Hm.

That's my ride; got to go.

No, no, but I'm making breakfast.

Hey, if you're leaving,
I'm crashing in your room.

That couch is giving
me spina bifida.

At least she likes your cooking.

Yeah.

You okay?

Why, with Aunt Paige? Yeah,
absolutely.

I mean, you know, if I ever
need to borrow a Balinese tunic

I can just... pluck one

off the couch. No, I mean,

about Ryan being at work
and you kind of... not.

Yeah, totally. It's fine.

And how about you, how are
you doing about Bug leaving?

Totally fine. You know,
it's about time that I...

see what else is out there, right?

I bet you that there
is something better

right around the
corner for both of us.

Hey, I honked. You ready?

Oh. Yeah, sorry.

And what are you doing
up so early?

I thought you got...

Fired. Yes, yes, I did,
thank you so much

for the reminder.

So you got drunk and
trashed your place, huh?

Been there.

No, Ryan's sister
is staying with us.

I'm picturing Ryan in a dress.

Doesn't do it for me.

That's good. Okay, so go.

Hi! Hi. Good morning.

How are you? I'm good. How are you?

Good. Did you sleep well? Yes.

Good.

So, what's with the tie?

I haven't seen you this
dressed up since my adoption.

What, are we getting another kid?

More like another job.

Until the insurance comes through,
the bar is closed.

Which means no income.

So, my dad, uh, got me an interview

at his wealth
management firm today.

I'm trying to picture you
behind a desk and not a bar.

It's kind of weird.

I know.

But it could be good, yeah?

All right, so what's your excuse?

Who'd you dress up for?

Is it Jones? I like Jones.

No. In case you haven't noticed,

I'm not exactly the
quarterback type.

Well, I was a quarterback,
and trust me,

we didn't have a type.

"Girl" pretty much covered it.

Jones dates head cheerleaders,

not girls who've only
been to the dentist twice.

Well, after today,
you're gonna have a daddy

who works 9:00 to 5:00 in an office

and a mom who stays home
sniffing cleaning products.

You can't get more normal.

And we are going to work
on that dentist situation.

All right, kiddo,

whoever you're all pretty for,

he's one lucky kid.

Did you know that you have
a beer stain on your tie?

Uh, sorry.

I was... I was just... It's okay.

I thought that I locked it.

I'm just crashing
at a buddy's place

until I find an apartment.

His couch is

a little short on
closet space, so...

What's up?

Uh, nothing.

I- I mean, nothing,
I just thought maybe

we should talk about what
happened the other night.

English One. Sample syllabus.

Thank you.

Lux, hey. Hey.

You know you're in the
wrong classroom, right?

I'm next-door.

Yes. I-I was just asking

Mr. Daniels if he has

an extra copy of Great
Expectations

laying around? Lux...

I know.

You got to be more
careful next time.

Second time that's happened.

Read it, learn it, love it.

Got it.

It's the entire midterm.

You coming to class?

Yeah.

You know, I'm-I'm actually
really excited about this.

I mean, I would have never
left the show on my own, but...

I don't know,
this is good, you know?

I'm just really...
I'm ready to get people excited

about being in the
Cate Cassidy business.

Public Radio Seattle is interested.

Okay, so why don't we just start with the,
uh, best option first?

Public Radio Seattle is very,
very interested.

I don't live in Seattle. I know.

What about Y109?

I heard that they have an opening.

I have feelers out.

Everyone I talk to loves you.

They think you're great.

The problem is,

you've always been... Cate

of Cate and Ryan.

Alone, you're a little tougher sell-
not impossible.

In fact, I do have something. Oh.

How would you like to produce
the Ryan and Kelly show?

What?

I know what you're thinking.

"No way! Cate Cassidy
is on-air talent!"

But hear me out.

It's local. Okay?

It's a small step towards
getting you on the radio.

I was on the radio.
Not with your own show.

And... I played hardball.

There is a deal on the table...

to start immediately at
almost your full salary.

No.

No?

No.

Alan... Hm?

You're my agent.

I don't know what other
jobs are out there,

but you need to find me one

that's not producing a
show that I was fired from

for less money.

Okay, that's a huge step back.

Honey, think about it.

You started in producing-
you're going back to your roots!

Is it ideal? No.

But when Ryan suggested it...

Wait, what? Ryan suggested it?

He didn't tell you?

Hello?

Is everything okay?

Right. Because that's
why parents get called

to the principal's office,

because everything is okay.

Oh, geez. Is this about

the number of times
she's been tardy?

Because that is his fault.

Or is it about Lux being
genetically moody?

Because that is all Cate.

I'm afraid it's a bit
more serious than that.

Your daughter is failing
out of Westmonte.

Captioning sponsored by
PARAMOUNT TELEVISION

You know, I-I don't understand.

I mean, if she is failing,

Why didn't we hear about
this before today?

Someone from the school
should have called

Or sent home a note.
The school policy clearly states

That any student who
is potentially failing

Must have all exams signed

By a parent, and lux's were. What?

Yeah. Well, there was
just a lot going on,

And I didn't want to make
a big deal out of it.

Lux, failing is a huge deal.

It's not... Simply
an issue of grades.

It's that lux's work has
not shown improvement

Since she arrived here.

What do we need to do?
She needs to pass

If she's gonna stay at westmonte.

Otherwise, there are other schools

In the neighborhood that, uh...

Perhaps operate at a slower pace.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, stop,
hold on a second.

We're not gonna ship lux off

To some, you know,
short-bus remedial school.

Exactly, right? 'cause if baze

Can pass westmonte,

So can she.

Her lowest grade is in english.

If lux has a prayer of scraping by

With a c for the semester,
she needs to get an a

On this Thursday's midterm.

Consider it done!

Cate! Principal: Lux, maybe

I could speak with your
parents for a moment.

Okay.

These problems often
boil down to motivation.

When parents get involved at school,
kids get motivated.

Aside from you visiting here
after the bong lamp incident...

Oh, that was my bad.
It was his fault.

...And, of course, the chaperoning

Of the winter formal...

You haven't done much.

Well, you know what, if you
ever need me to throw together,

Like, a quick, you know,
like a donkey basketball tournament,

I'm your guy. He really is.

And cate, she can make
cookies for the bake sale.

Or buy them.

I could buy them.

Actually, there is something
we could really use.

We need another speaker
at career day tomorrow.

You could talk about
your successes.

You're a radio deejay,
you started your own business.

It could also show lux

That you have high
expectations for her, as well.

There's a bit

Of a problem there, 'cause,
see, I'm a little bit

Between careers right now,

And this one-- she's the...

She's the public
speaker of the family.

She just got can...

...Cer.

Cancer.

I thought it was cancer.

But it was more like this
24-hour bug kind of thing.

So, um...

Career day it is, huh?

Career day? You couldn't
have jumped on bake sale?

Yeah. Well, you want
to go back in there

And tell principal dugan that
neither one of us can speak

Because we're both
unemployed losers?

Hey, hey.

I'm not the one who got fired.

No, you just burned
down your own bar!

Hey, guys? Yeah.

This is no reason
to start fighting.

We're not fighting.
We're discussing.

It's just grades.

Yeah, which could affect
your admission to college.

Who said I wanted to go to college?

How else do you expect
to have a career?

Well, you and baze went to college,

And you don't even have jobs.

Yes, at the moment.

I already have an entire career

Under my belt, and baze...

Not a good example. Hey,

I happen to have an interview

In, um...

Ooh, 20 minutes. I got to go.

Guys, this whole career day
thing really isn't necessary.

Um, yes, it is.

We need to be involved, okay?

You let us handle that.

You... You just get ready
to study for your exam.

Okay, when we get home,

We're going to come
up with a study plan

That's going to make learning fun.

Anyone can get a's in
high school if they try.

Did you get a's in high school?

Sometimes, you know,
with the answers on my shoe.

Hmm. Got to go.

Hey, wish me luck. Luck!

Okay, don't worry about it.

You're my kid.

You have got academic
success in your blood,

Which hopefully,

Is gonna counteract the
dumb-ass you got from baze.

Well, when am I going

To get a check?

I filled out that insurance claim
with everything I remember.

who?

Yeah. Fire girl.

I don't know. Paige something.

I didn't get her last name.

How many paiges are
there in this city?

Oh.

Well, um...

After six boilermakers,
it's all a little blurry.

So, as far as a description goes,

Um, crazy in bed and
burned down my bar

Is all that I've got.

Look, I pay my premiums, all right,

Or at least my dad does, so,
really, all I need is a check.

Hi. I'm, uh, nate bazile.

Here to see emma bradshaw.

I'm emma.

You're late.

So I see you're making a rather
significant career change.

Why now? Well, you know,
I've been doing my own thing for a while,

And I feel like it's time
to branch out, grow up,

Move away from an industry
that involves beer nuts.

And what makes you think

You'd be a good fit
at fenmore financial?

Same last name as the guy
who runs the place...

you know what, though?

I don't want you to take
that into consideration.

Because, yes, my father got
me in the door, but I want you

To judge me based on,
you know, my own merits.

So, you ran a bar?

Yes, I did, until it,

Um... Was disposed of...

Right. Paige something.

Yeah, it's the... This?

Yeah. Yeah.

Do you, um... Do you
habitually sleep with girls

Without asking their last name?

Uh, she was a new bartender.

I was in a little bit
of a head space, so...

Ah. So, you slept with an employee?

Could we just start this over?

Oh, I think we should. Yeah.

Um, would I be correct
in that you're 32,

And this would be
your first real job?

You-you know my dad owns
this company, right?

Okay, so I've made
us some flash cards

For your midterms.

They are broken down by plot,
character,

Theme and subtext.

Hmm. It's, like, 100 cards.

No, don't think of it as 100 cards.

Think of it as tiny,
memorizable pieces.

Okay, okay.

I get that this is important,
and I'll try, but...

Cate, I'm not like you.

I'm not... I'm not smart.

No. That's the thing.

You are smart.

Hidden underneath all of those hats

And those scarves and those layers,

There is a ton of smartness.

I'm gonna find it.

Hey, I'm home. Oh, hey.

Sorry I'm late.

Kelly and I had to suffer
through dinner with corporate.

But I did pick up
some dessert. Hmm.

Hey, ryan, we're in the
middle of studying, so...

Okay, well, how about this?

You two haven't seen each
other all day, so I will go

To baze's and study, huh?

Hmm.

Okay, well, then, um,

Why don't you just take
the practice test...

Uh-huh....That I made you?

And listen to the
study guide... Got it.

You know, I used to

Study listening to music.

'cause mozart...

Mozart makes you smarter.

Rage against the machine-
now that keeps you awake.

Okay, ryan, I have been
doing this with her all day.

I've got it.

Thank you.

Yeah. See you.

Well, what?
I was just trying to help.

Okay, well,
if scoring me a demotion

At the place that fired me is
your idea of helping, don't.

This place is awesome.

This is definitely a step up
from living out of my classroom.

Why would someone leave this place?

Jamie worked at the bar.

After the fire, he was broke,

So he moved back home with his mom.

But she's cool.

If you want it, you'd just need

To meet with baze, too.
It's his place.

Hell, yeah, I want it.
This is perfect.

Hey, lux?

You know when baze is getting back?

Um...

You live here?

Not really. No.

Sometimes, but... But barely.

Barely. Barely at all.

You know what?

I should probably think about this.

I'll give you a call.

What just happened?

Wait up!

Well, eric!

Lux, you can't call me that.

Okay, dude, you can take
the room if you want it.

Why... Why are you acting
like you did something wrong?

Okay, because I did.

Do you have any idea
how much trouble

I'd get in if anyone found out?

anything.

I'd lose my job... All right,
like I'm gonna say anything.

Okay, and you're, like,
two seconds older than me,

So stop freaking out.

Try six years, lux.

I'm 23. You're what, 17?

Sixteen.

Even better.

Look, I get it.

Nothing can happen between us,

But we still felt
what we felt, right?

I...

I mean, didn't you?

Feel something? That's why
you don't want to move in.

What happened with
us was a mistake.

I didn't feel anything.

Well, then I guess
nothing's stopping you.

Hey, save your cereal milk.

We're gonna have to start

Cutting some corners around here.

Why?

The insurance company just called.

They're not gonna cover the fire?

Nope. No.

Only for structural damage.

But everything else

Should have been covered
under renters insurance,

Which I, the renter,

Apparently missed some payments on.

Don't you scowl at me.
You got a milk mustache.

The effect is creepy.

How can I not scowl?

The bar, the insurance,

The not getting a job
at your dad's company.

Oh, that was not my fault.

That emma chick-
she totally judged me

Based on a private
telephone conversation.

Which you were having
in a public elevator.

You know what?

I didn't want that job.

I'm not a desk guy.

I mean, even the parking
structure made me nervous.

Who-who wants to stand around
with a bunch of stuffy suits

Talking about money all day?

This is just like in high
school when we played carter.

We're gonna do the carter
story again, really?

You psyched yourself out,
and you didn't even try.

Well, I tried to get this job,
all right?

She didn't even give me a chance.

Then make her give you a chance.

You built your bar
from the wall studs up.

You-you ran a small
business for years.

Baze, you majored in
economics in college.

Yeah. Yeah.

You need this job, and you
need to stop telling yourself

The game is lost
before you even start.

And, of course,

I've had to consider a
number of offers already.

Seattle wants me.

Uh, san diego--

They want me, too.

And everybody at y109 loves you.

Loves you!

That is just so good to hear.
You have no idea.

I mean, really,
I think that leaving

K100 might be the best thing
that has ever happened to me.

Their loss is our gain.

Cate cassidy as a solo act

Has a whole rogue
woman thing going on.

Which is so timely.

Yes. We think it would
be a big hit in the

2:00 a.M. To 6:00 a.M. Slot.

Oh, I'm sorry.

Um... I thought

That the open slot was
morning drive time.

Well, drive time is more
of a two-hander. Mm.

Listeners love the banter,
the chemistry.

Like you had with ryan,
or ryan has with kelly.

Oh, love ryan and kelly.

Yeah, they're great.

Um, look,

I have been hosting
morning drive time

For the past three years.

It is true that I don't have
a lot of tape on my own,

But I do... I do have fans.

You know, lots of 'em. You...

You love me. Love you.

Thing is, without ryan,
you're an unknown commodity.

We had to go to bat for you for
the 2:00 to 6:00 a.M. Slot.

Okay. Well, then,
I will just think about it,

And I will get back to you.

We'd love that.

Love that. Really.

What the heck? Emma.

Nate bazile. We met the other day.

Who knew we were members
of the same gym?

That's crazy, huh?

It's like we could have run
into each other over 100 times

And never even noticed.

It's a small world.

It's an all-women's gym.

Hey. All right, you know what?

I think you've got the
wrong impression of me.

You're a woman?

No. I mean, I never got
the chance to tell you

How I built my bar
from the ground up,

That I am great with the public,

Drumming up business,
working with clientele...

Really?

But which of our clients do
you see yourself working with?

Many.

Aaron peters, thornton howard?

Yeah. Really great guys.

Solid. Love those guys.

They're companies.

Well, the first thing they
should do is change their names

To something a little more
professional-sounding.

You know, I don't think

I got the wrong
impression of you at all.

I think you showed up
to a job intererview

Underdressed and unprepared.

Your résumé is a joke.

Do you even want the job?

Oh, I think that showing up

At an all-women's gym pretty
much speaks for itself.

I don't mean, do you
want to pay your bills

Or get your bar back?

I mean, do you want to
put on a suit and tie,

Analyze financial reports,

And sit in an office all day?

Because that's what the job is.

And as far as I can tell,

You're just a guy who
doesn't know what he wants

To do with his life,
so he drinks and parties

And is dumb enough to
burn down his own bar.

Look...

I don't know what you want,
but I know what I want.

It's not you.

Was there, like,
a murder in this room,

And you need to
destroy all evidence?

Is it safe to say you
didn't get the job?

No, I got the job.

That's awesome.

Do we really have to go to
this dumb career day thing?

Yes! I got the 2:00 a.M.

To 6:00 a.M. Time slot,

So I can be a miserably tired
person that never has sex

With her husband again,
or I can just stay unemployed.

Okay? Don't walk where I mopped.

All right. I- I vote for the one

That has nothing to do
with not having sex.

Or are we never having
sex again, anyway?

Got it! All right. Cate, look.

Cate, I know it's hard out there,

But you're going to
find something great.

And until then,
you have a job if you want it.

Yeah, the producer job you
asked them to get me? Yes.

Yeah, it's like pity sex.
Oh, come on.

You know, just admit it.
You think that working

For a show that fired
me is the best I can do.

No, of course not.

It's what you were doing before
we started working together.

But it's the only idea that I have

That will keep us working together.

Oh, really?
Then why didn't you quit?

Huh? Because that would
have kept us together!

You know, we-we could
have gone to y109,

Or krkj or any of
those other places.

But instead, you just sat back,

And you let them replace me

With-with some
annoying fake virgin.

No. That is not what happened,
all right?

I fought for you.

Obviously not hard enough!

Because while your
career is skyrocketing,

Mine is in a freefall!

Um...

That-that was baze.

He didn't get his job,
either, so...

Looks like you're back

To giving that career day speech.

That's awesome.

My work truly helps
humanity in a time of need.

I cannot believe that you
are making me do this.

Well, it has to be you.

I'm not an inspirational
speaker, cate.

Great. You made it.

Which one of you is going on?

I hate you.

Hey, math.

That's the guy I was
telling you about,

Who was looking at jamie's room.

Nice guy. Lux met him.

Cool.

Are you going to
introduce us or just wait

Until we're fishing socks out
of each other's laundry pile?

No. That's what sucks.
He's not taking it.

Wait. What?

He's not?

He called back last night.

Too bad, since we could really use

Another roommate who has a job.

Pressure. Very helpful.

Um, um, you know what?

I left something in my locker.
I'll be right back.

And that's why, to me,

The porta-potty service is the
number one business to be in.

It's also the number two business.

What's the deal, mr. Daniels?

You're not talking to me now?

Yeah, 'cause that's not childish.

There's no point in talking,
'cause you don't get it.

I do get that you're
not taking the room

In the loft because of me.

Actually, I want to
be closer to school.

Right. So now you're a
child and a liar. Got it.

I'm a liar?

That's ironic.
You were working in a bar.

You were wearing
an engagement ring,

Talking about some guy you'd
been dating for years?

You were wearing a u of o t-shirt.

We spent the whole night together,
and you said nothing.

If I'd known that you were 16--

Then nothing would have happened.

Eric, I am sorry.

Maybe I lied because I liked you,

And I didn't want you
to think that I was--

I was engaged and 16,
like I was some screwed-up kid.

Lux, look, I'm sorry.

I'm not angry at you.

I'm upset at the situation.

This whole thing is
my fault and that...

You're right. Maybe we
should go somewhere and talk.

Thank you, mr. Franklin.

Dropped a lot of knowledge on us.

Okay, people.

Put your hands together

For my very favorite radio host,

Portland's own

Cate cassidy!

Yeah!

Hi!

Whoo! I'm cate...

...Uh, from, uh,

From cate and ryan.

Okay, now I am just cate.

Uh, that's "cat" with an "e."

Wow. I know.

And she did this for a living.

Hi, guys.

Hey. I'm sorry I'm late, everybody.

What are you doing?

I mean, it's career day,

And you're talking about
our careers, so...

So, uh...

Anybody used to listen
to us on the radio, k100?

Right on. Yeah.

I like it.

So, what you're
probably thinking is,

"how do you get a start in radio?"

Cate, why don't you tell
them how this all began,

Back in our days at, uh, z-rock?

I was a production assistant.

Production assistant?

Low man on the totem pole.

I, on the other hand,

Was the host of the afternoon show.

You see, cate's main job was

To bring the on-air talent
coffee and doughnuts.

How many times did you manage

To do your job and bring
me coffee and a doughnut?

Zero.

So, eventually, at some point,

We had to ask cate point blank,

"do you even want this job?"

And the answer was...

Of course I didn't want the job.

What I wanted,
and what I've always wanted

Was to be on the air.

So they put me on,

Uh... One afternoon,

From the booth,
to banter with ryan.

Yeah, and, oh, by the way,
she-she bombed.

big time.

Yes, and I realized I
had a lot to learn.

That instead of being so focused
on where I wanted to be,

I should be ready when I got there.

So the next time that

I got the opportunity...

...I would be ready.

So, a couple years later,
I'm at k100, and I had

The opportunity to
pick a new co-host,

And I remembered cate.

I remembered how she
knew what she wanted,

And how she wasn't afraid
to fail and try again,

And how she'd-she'd taken

The time to just
step back and learn.

So I chose her.

That is why I wanted
to work with her then,

And that is why I still do.

Where's lux?

I don't know.

I should have told you
the truth about...

Who I was.

But if I had, we would have
never gone to the ocean,

And I would be engaged right now,

Without ever knowing
that there was...

More.

Now, I know that billboard
was just a billboard,

Not really the ocean.

And you were just a guy

Who was being nice,

Not a guy that actually liked me.

And maybe I just...

I don't know the difference anymore

Between what's fake
and what's real.

And-and that's not your fault.

It's mine.

I'm just...

I'm trying to be this person
everybody expects me to be.

You know, I'm supposed to
be listening to career day,

And getting my grades up,

And-and thinking about my future.

But all I keep thinking about...

Do you know what I
keep thinking about?

That night.

And-and you can say
what you want, but...

To me...

It was real.

Lux...

It was real.

Lux!

Hey. Been looking for you.

You missed cate's speech.

Yeah, it got good towards the end,

But-- ha-ha--

You got to see the beginning.

This is going on youtube.

Hey, I'm eric.

Uh, mr. Daniels

Was just quizzing me
for the test tomorrow.

Great expectations. Oh.
You're the guy that was gonna

Rent the room-- what happened?

Oh, sorry, man, I wish I could.

Uh, there's kind of circumstances

That are out of my control,

So it's just not gonna work out.

Dude, that sucks-
you're giving up a good thing.

Yeah, I know.

Hey, thanks for understanding
about the place.

It's nice to meet you. Yeah.

Hey. Are you all right?

You missed a good
porta-potty speech.

Oh. Hey.

Are you that stressed
about this test?

What if I fail?

Well, uh, cate and I are
both unemployed, so...

The one thing you
don't have to fear

In this family is failure.

I mean, I think we pretty
much both have that covered.

You didn't want that job, anyway.

Well, you-you know
what's the weird thing?

I kind of did.

But I guess I thought that
if I never even tried,

I couldn't fail.

But I am trying.

And... Failing-
that's the problem.

I get it.

I do.

And I will stay up late and
I'll study with you, too.

You know? Whatever it takes.

It's kind of like what
cate said in her speech.

Um...

I mean, neither one of us
can give up on what we want.

You got this, kiddo.

So do I.

All right.

Ah.

Oh.

Thank you for being here today.

You know, for being the
one person in lux's life

That actually has a career.

well, I wanted you to
know that I had your back.

'cause I know it...
Hasn't felt like it lately.

You know, maybe I should
have walked away, too,

From the show, but I-I didn't.

I didn't for a lot of reasons.

The biggest one is you and lux.

Quitting... Could
have meant anything.

It could've meant less money, uh...

A new city, a gig that just
didn't fit with having a kid.

That's why I wanted
to help her study.

That's why I wanted to do this...
This speech today.

I just... I guess I
just wish that somebody

Would have asked me to
do career day.

'cause I want to feel like
she's my kid, too, you know?

Ryan, I'm sorry.

You know, I should
have realized that...

You know, but this whole work thing-
it's just a lot.

But... You know, you're right.

Having a kid and being married...

Sometimes it means sacrifices.

Well, who knows better
than you that...

Taking a step back...

Can help you move forward?

And maybe, you know, you'll end
up exactly where you want to be.

I know, but you really think
it's gonna work, me producing?

We'd make it work.

Look, I just know that I am
better with you than without you.

Me, too.

I'm only going to take
five minutes of your time.

Is this going to be
an everyday thing?

Aaron peters is a
modestly-diversified

Manufacturing company
which produces,

Among other things,
sporting equipment.

They tend to be pretty
conservative investors,

So we should probably be looking

For undervalued companies for them

To put their money into-
value investing.

I wrote a paper
about it in college.

The clock is ticking
on your five minutes.

Okay, look,

My dad-- he's an impressive guy,

And when I was a little kid,
I wanted to be just like him.

But somewhere along the way,
I stopped trying,

Because I knew, on some level,

That I could never
be just like him.

So I picked something so
opposite of what he was.

You know, I never saw
myself as a business guy,

Because I was afraid
that I couldn't cut it,

And I don't want my kid to
ever not try because of that.

You know, I've had a hard
time admitting what I want.

And... I've lost things

Because of that.

You know,

And I'm not about to let
another thing I want slip away,

And you shouldn't let me slip away.

I may not have the right
résumé or credentials,

But I'm a hard worker,
I'm determined, and I'm fearless

Because, believe me,
I have nothing to lose.

So you can hire me or not.
That's your call.

But you got to know-
I want this job.

Oh, my god. Fire girl.

Baze. What are you doing here?

What are you doing here?
I've been looking for you.

Well, I've been waiting
for you to call me.

You better not have given my
bartending gig to somebody else.

Your bartending gig? Mm-hmm.

There is no bar.

What? Since when?

Since you burned it down.

Says who?

Ah, baze. Hey.

What are you doing here?

Oh, have you two met?

Paige, this is lux's dad, baze.

Baze, this is ryan's little sister.

You look really familiar.

Have we met before?

No. Never, ever.

Hey.

Oh, hey.

All right, so,

Math asked me to bring this over.

It's lux's english

Midterm.

Oh, my god! Oh, my god!

We actually got a 95!

Oh, yeah.

We need champagne. Ryan?

All right, I've got it.

Yeah, we do.

A 95!

Oh, yeah. Well, I don't think we...

I don't think we...

We don't have to do all of this.

What?! Sure we do.
Come on, you got an a.

Plus, cate's new
job at the station.

Uh, and you guys are looking

At a new sales associate
at fenmore financial.

You got the job?

Yeah, I know. Crazy, right?

Yeah.

Um, all right.

Let's have a toast.
Oh, we need one more.

Okay, to all of us doing something

We thought we couldn't.

Oh, yes, and to lux for doing
what we all knew she could.
