[all laughing]

Science camp, here we come.

I hope we don't exceed the weight limit
with everything Olivia brought.

-What did you put in that bag, rocks?
-Sure.

My great rock collection, for comparison.

It's gonna be fun.

Yay. That's been on my to-do list
for years.

Andrea.

Just kidding.

Sounds like fun.

At least, the island part does.

[Olivia sighs]

This might be the best weekend
in our lives.

Science, and the five of us
doing it together.

Hey, have you noticed
that girl over there?

Where?

This one is called a serpentine.

-And this--
-Over there.

-Hmm. Do we even know her?
-No, I don't think so.

Why is she all by herself?

Maybe she wants to be left alone.

I like being alone sometimes.

Actually, I was alone when I found
this wonderful piece of rare flint.

What is that she's holding?

It looks like some kind of medallion.

[Kate] Give that back.

-What's it to you?
-It's mine.

Looks weird to me.

-What's this X on it mean?
-Give it.

[grunting in slow motion]

I'll take that.

What's going on here?

Oh, nothing, Miss Stevens.
Just having some fun.

Well, enough of this.
Go sit down, boys.

Whoa!

It's so beautiful.

What's her problem?
We were just trying to help her.

-What was that all about?
-I don't know.

She should have
at least said thank you.

Hey.

My serpentine and my peridot.

Your what?

My wonderfully put-together
a-third-of-the-way rock collection.

Uh-oh. I smell trouble.

[gasps] Those where my rocks
you were kicking.

Really?

Yeah, those rocks belong to our friend.

What? They're just rocks.

[Olivia sputters]

-[Olivia hyperventilating]
-Calm down, Olivia.

Breathe.
Remember, hot air ballooning tomorrow.

Landscape erosion.

But... But...

I collected so many of these
with my dad...

Look, I'm sorry.
I didn't know they were important rocks.

I'm sure it will be fine.

I'm Mia, by the way.

-What's your name?
-It's Kate.

I know, like the island. No relation.

[foghorn blares]

Students, there's Kate's Island up ahead.

Now, that is a place
that can make a girl dream

about... finding a carbonatite rock.

Yeah.

I sure could develop a taste for this.

Why do they call it Kate's Island?

Well, they say, a long time ago...

it used to be the hideout for a notorious
lady pirate named Dark-Eyed Kate.

Some even think she and her pirate crew
hid some kind of treasure on the island.

Of course, that's just a story.
No one knows if it's true.

[Olivia chuckles]

You don't have to add that, Mrs. Stevens.

We're way too old
to believe in kids' stories like that.

Students, or should I say scientists,
I'm going to divide you into two teams.

Oh, no, we're gonna be split apart.

You'll study different aspects
of the island.

You'll either be on Team 1 or Team 2.

One, two.

One, two.

One, two.

One, two.

One, two.

One and two.

Great.

Okay. Gather with your team.

-Now, how did you all...?
-Mm. You chose the teams.

Hmm.

Team 1, your presentation will focus
on the surf, currents and sea life.

[all cheer]

[Stevens] Team 2, you'll focus
on what the layers of rocks tell us

about this island.

Rocks, great.

How are we supposed to study rocks?

Microscopically, magnetically,
geologically.

I could go on and on.

Please, don't.

Why did you come
if you aren't interested in science?

I'm interested, just not in rocks.

-Yeah, that's pretty clear.
-Okay, you guys. Shh.

Miss Stevens isn't done.

Each team presents their findings
in two days.

Like a contest?

It's not a contest.

But each team is encouraged
to do their best.

You can begin exploring.

Okay, girls, we're gonna rock this thing.

Get it? Rock this thing?

What should we do first?

Hey, I'll input an hourly log
in my calendar.

If you see a rock that looks special,
it probably is.

Take a sample.

Oh, and make lots of notes.

Do sketches and take pictures.

[gasps] A rare piece of monzonite.

I don't think
Kate has any friends on this trip.

-Really?
-She didn't sit by anyone on the boat.

-We should try and make her feel welcome.
-She's not making it easy.

You just focus on science, Olivia.

Without your head in the game,
we don't stand a chance of winning.

It's not a competition.

[chuckles] It's always a competition.

[metal detector beeping]

[metal detector whirs]

Yes, yes. Ooh, ooh.

[Kate] Hey, watch where you're going.

[beeping rapidly]

Oh. Oh, great.

[Emma chuckles]

[dialing]

[humming]

[giggles]

So nice working on a project together.
As a team. Don't you think so, Kate?

Whew.

Huh. Where did she go?

[seagulls squawking]

Oh, there she is.

Hi, Kate.

-What are you doing here?
-I was thinking you could use a friend.

We're all on the same team, right?

-Have you been following me?
-Um...

Oh. Well, not "following" following.

-Where do you want these rocks, Olivia?
-[Olivia] Uh... over here.

Here are my sketches
of volcanic rock formations

I found on the south side of the island.
And a sample.

Great. Perfect.

Where are your materials, Kate?

Oh, shoot. I, um...
I left my bag of rocks back on the hill.

Uh... I'll get it tomorrow.

Uh, just what type of science
are you interested in?

Uh, plants. I love plants.
Flowers especially.

And now you'll have to excuse me.
I'm off to bed.

Suit yourself.

[snoring]

[foghorn blaring]

[gasps]

Come on out, Mia.
I know you're there.

Why do you keep following me?

You shouldn't be out here alone.

-Why do you care?
-What are you doing out here anyway?

You're just going to laugh at me.

You don't believe in kids' stories.

Is this something about Dark-Eyed Kate?

It has to do with the medallion, right?

If I tell you, you have to promise
not to tell anyone.

I promise.

I think this belongs to Dark-Eyed Kate.

Whoa.

It holds the secret to where
her treasure is buried on the island.

-Where did you get it?
-From my grandmother.

She said it was a clue
to finding Kate's treasure.

But my mom also says
it's just a kid's tale.

Maybe she's right. Maybe they all are.

No. I believe you.
We can find it together.

-Really?
-Sure.

But it's getting a bit dark.
We should continue tomorrow.

Miss Stevens will send us home
if she finds out we were out.

[windowsill creaks]

[footsteps approaching]

So, I guess you're excited, huh, Kate?

Uh... why?

Now you get to see
the entire part of this island

rich in native Campanula rotundifolia.

What's that?

Another type of rock?

Uh, no.

That's the scientific name for harebell.
The flower.

I'm surprised you don't know that,
since you're into botany,

-the study of plants and flowers.
-Come on, you guys.

-We have to get in the balloon.
-Hurry, everyone, let's go, go, go.

[Olivia] This will be amazing.

It's the best way
to observe the landscape.

And we can take gorgeous pictures.

Everyone, grab your notebooks.

-[Kate sighs]
-You may be surprised to know

that I myself am not all that interested
in science either.

I'm not that surprised.

Oh. Right.

Uh... But the view is fantastic.

You, too, Andrea?

-Is everyone keeping secrets around here?
-Enough small talk.

Let's keep our eyes on the prize.

Uh, the presentation.

Wow. Don't you just love
how visible it is?

The glaciers from the ice age
formed the landscape

by carving at the rock as they moved
inch by inch over millions of years.

Hey, maybe I finally got Kate
interested in science.

-Why are they suddenly so chummy?
-Mia's just being nice.

No, it's more than that.
They snuck out last night.

-I woke up when they got back.
-Huh?

-Where did they go?
-I don't know.

-And why?
-And without me.

Um... I mean, us.

Aw.

-That would have been exciting.
-I don't know, but something is up.

[inaudible dialogue]

-What are you drawing?
-That design from Kate's medallion.

-I can't get it out my head.
-Enough of that.

That's strange.

-You girls should see this.
-[Andrea] What, Olivia?

That's so exciting.
But what does it mean?

I have no idea what this means,
but I know it means something.

Mia seems to know something.

But if Mia knows,
then why hasn't she told us?

That's a good question.

Let's just ask her.

Hey, Mia, do you have a second?

So, what's up with you and Kate?

Seems like
you're awfully good friends.

-[sighs] I wish I could tell you.
-Well, why can't you?

Mia, are you coming?

[stammers] I just... can't.

What just happened?

It definitely has something
to do with that X.

Do you remember Kate in the balloon?
When she was so excited?

I bet it was over that X.

Oh, I'm worried about Mia.

This is so strange of her.

Me, too.

She wouldn't just avoid us like that
for any reason.

I think Kate is bad for her.

We need to get to the bottom of this.
Who knows what's going on?

Yeah.
And what if they go out again tonight?

We have to keep an eye on them
all the time.

[rustling]

[Andrea snoring]

Wow, Andrea, you are a very good actress.
It really looked like you were sleeping.

Oh!

Yeah, acting, yeah.

Sometimes, Miss Stevens does
random bed checks.

What if tonight is one?

If she finds us gone,
we'll lose the competition.

[all] It's not a competition.

[chuckles]

Don't worry about Miss Stevens.

I think I have a way
around any surprise bed check.

[girl snoring on recording]

Sorry, girls, if I woke you.

[foghorn blaring]

-Mm, this looks like the right way.
-Confirmed.

And which one of you can confirm

that we're not going
to run into any wild animals

or long-lost castaways?

This place really is spooky.

[screeching nearby]

Hush. Did you hear that?

I hear it. And I don't like it.

-Oh...
-[screeching nearby]

It's right behind us.

[stammers] Someone should take a look.

-[Andrea] Not me.
-[Emma] Not me.

Then we have to do it together.

-On the count of three.
-Emma gets to go home?

We turn around.

One, two, three.

[barks]

[all] Aw!

-It's so cute.
-Aw.

[seal barking]

Come on. Let's go find Mia and Kate.

I hear you. The sooner we get away
from here, the better.

I agree.

[Kate] You told them.

No, really, I didn't.

Then how did they find us?

Your medallion necklace.

She's right. Mia didn't tell us anything.

We figured out the symbol.
It led us here.

Guys, I'm so sorry
I didn't tell you the whole truth.

I promised Kate to keep this a secret.

But I swear, Kate,
they won't make fun of you.

You trusted me.

Now trust my friends.

It's true. You can tell us.
We know you're not here for science.

Tell them. Maybe they can help.

[sighs] Okay.

I think this medallion belonged
to Dark-Eyed Kate.

[gasps] The lady pirate?

I think it holds the secret
to the location of her treasure.

It led us here.
But we've hit a dead end.

Please don't say "dead."

-Are you sure we're in the right location?
-Sort of.

-We found these carvings.
-They're beautiful.

But what do they mean?

They must have some purpose.

We've tried counting them,
connecting them,

looking at them upside down,
with one eye shut...

We even tried to listen to them.
We still can't figure it out.

[sighs] I wish we knew.

-This has all been for nothing.
-Not nothing.

Look at the stars.

[sighs] It's still a beautiful moment.

Just think.

Dark-Eyed Kate looked up
at this same night sky.

Just a long time ago.

I bet she was with her best friends, too.

Yeah. I did some research on her
and learned she had a crew of seven.

They probably used the stars to navigate
and find this island.

Of course.

You guys, stars.

-It's Pleiades.
-What?

A constellation.

Also called the Seven Sisters,
the Daughters of the Night, or the Guide,

depending on what culture named it.

It has a special place in many cultures
because it's so visible.

The Aztecs based their calendar year
upon Pleiades.

[Emma] It does match the carving.

What else do you know about this?

Well, Dark-Eyed Kate's crew must have used
the Seven Sisters constellation

to find the island.

-So, they carved it here in this cliff.
-But why?

I don't know. Let's see.

The brightest star
of the Seven Sisters is Alcyone.

Look, it's different.

We haven't tried
putting the medallion in the carving.

[Kate] It fits.

Dark-Eyed Kate probably needed
her whole crew.

Look, a cave.

-It worked.
-We did it.

[Kate] I don't believe it.

Look.

It has the mark of the Seven Sisters.

-What are you waiting for?
-Yeah, open it.

There's a diary.

[gasps]

That's odd.

[both gasp]

[both] Oh, my gosh.

This diary says
Kate's last name was Putnam.

My great-great grandmother
was named Kathleen Putnam.

I'm related to Dark-Eyed Kate.

So, that's why
your family has had the medallion.

You're not only related to Dark-Eyed Kate.
You're related to a bit of a scientist.

These are amazingly rare fossils
from all over the world.

This is really a major find.

-I'm related to a scientist?
-Yup.

No wonder I'm weird.

[all laughing]

And there you have the perfect
science presentation for tomorrow.

Yes. Whoo!

Therefore, these fossils represent
a major archaeological find.

That is so cool.

Very impressive presentation, Team 2.

Yes!

Oh. [chuckles]

[all] Woohoo!

Great job, you guys.

So, I guess it's back to, you know,

you guys doing your thing
and me doing mine.

Yeah.

Or lunch with us on Monday?

[laughs]

Thought you'd never ask.

-We could go to that other place.
-[Emma] We could go to the mall.

[Olivia] Let's do that.

[Stephanie] Lunch is gonna be
so much fun.

[Kate] I can't wait
for the next rock trip.
