Last Chance U: Basketball (2021–…): Season 1, Episode 3 - Jenny - full transcript

- Good?
- What up, dawg?

So, they're having games here now?

Yeah, fuckin' raggedy ass parks and rec.

You know how that goes.
What's up, momma?

- Hi.
- How you doing?

- I'm good.
- Oh, yeah. This is my girl.

- This is Kiera.
- I know! Come on!

- You didn't meet her. When?
- I know everything.

You know I know everything.

- But you've never met her before.
- I've met her before.

- She live on Michael Street.
- Yeah.

- Yeah.
- He knows my brothers.

Thank you. You late.

Why you know everybody, bro?

Man, I should come up here

Oh!

- Oh, he broke the glasses.
- He broke his whole face.

- Oh, kid.
- He wear glasses.

- He didn't see it coming.
- Oh, that's a... It's always...

The funniest story
you got being here.

You gotta remind me.

You busted
your tooth on the floor.

Fuck you, nigga!

You went all the way across the rim
and...

And your tooth was layin' on the floor.

What'd you do to your tooth?
Tell 'em what you did to your tooth.

I stick it back in.

You kicked that motherfucker
all the way over there.

When you kicked the tooth
and picked it up, you...

"Shit. My mom's gonna be mad."

I already knew it was gonna be,
like, thousand, two thousand, like, fuck.

Dude, I know... I know your mom's birthday
was last week?

- Yeah.
- Man.

Forty-nine, bro. She gettin' old.

I'm thinking about
throwin' a party next year.

- That'd be dope.
- 'Cause her 50th was supposed to be...

Her 50th was gonna be crazy.
We had talked about it.

I might just do it anyway.

Good hustle, bro.

- Yeah.
- Step back.

With your mother passing,

it gives you a different outlook
on where you wanna be.

- Sure.
- You gonna have to push harder,

because you don't have
that crutch no more of your mom.

- Right.
- You know, if you needed it.

Dude, I still have
her phone number in my phone.

I've been working with Deshaun
since he was seven years old.

You can't make a kid
and his mother as tight as they were.

You know, they were really tight.
That was... that was her heart.

She was his.

Um...

And that's just where it was.
She... she loved him with everything.

Loved him enough to where he couldn't
spend a night at people's house sometimes.

So, everybody can go to his house.

But, yeah, that's...
that's where their love was.

Tight. Real tight.

Sometimes I catch myself, like, thinking,
just reminiscing, like,

kind of wantin' my old life back.

And kind of, like, realizing that
it'll never... it'll never be that way.

And that... that can get kind of tough.

- You was on the court, you a part of that.
- Yes, sir.

Here we go, guards down and back.

As it looks right now,

we look like we're the strongest team
in our conference.

But again, any night, man.

You come with the wrong disposition,
and you lose.

It's not only havin' that talent.
You gotta have team chemistry.

A lot of that falls on myself,
to be able to manage

and understand different personalities
and how to get the best out of each guy

that's as talented as they are.

And then also to make 'em cohesive.

It just takes one game
where one guy is pouting

and you're playing against a great team,

and he brings that spirit, you know,
and it infiltrates the team.

We need Joe right here
practicing with this group.

And then there's a balance, okay?

Now Joe misses, now there's consequences.

When it gets to a point
where it's affecting the program

and I lose the respect of the team,
then that's when it's a problem.

I do feel like Joe's
a little bit of a ticking time bomb.

Haven't seen him Sunday,

We couldn't even sub him.

I think he just walked off the floor. They
called travel on him, and he walked off.

He goes, "I'm done. I'm not playing.

You know, when you walk out of a game
like that, that is so selfish.

But he is the most
unselfish player on the team.

If he watches on the bench,

he cheers more than anybody else
on the bench.

But when things get the best of him,
and he kind of implodes,

Joe don't play the minutes. Joe gonna be
what it is, he's always gonna play

12 to 18 minutes a game
before he fouls out or implodes.

One of the two.

This is on you guys to get better
at what we're talking about.

As you improve, now we can improve.
I know it's hard to improve on 19 and one.

But there's a lot
that we can do to make it

so that when we have
that off game in the playoffs,

we still win it.

When you're 6'2",
like, you're always gonna be like,

"Man, if I was 6'9",
I would be this and that."

I wish I could just reach over everybody
and just drop the ball in... in the net.

At Division I, every team needs
6'9" athletic dudes who can defend,

because the other team has 6'9"
athletic dudes that can score.

So it's... you gotta have that.

There's thousands
of 6'2" basketball players

that wanna play Division I basketball.

There's a whole lot less
6'9", 6'8", 6'7" dudes.

They have to be so good
to get respect.

You gotta do those extra special things,
like not turn the ball over,

run what the coach asks,
play good defense,

be that team guy when you're a guard.

Whereas, if you're a post player,
you know, you don't do none of that.

You block a couple of shots,

That the reason that she couldn't come

is 'cause she found out
that she had cancer.

How long was it
from when you found out to when she died?

Three years.

What happened in those three years?

Everything changed.

I saw my mom cry more than I ever...
more than I'd ever seen.

And I saw her lose her hair.

I saw her lose her friends.

It was the hardest thing
I ever been through.

I hope it's the hardest thing
I ever have to go through.

It was so lonely.

I had to be strong.

Because I was all she had.

I was the only person
that she saw every day.

And I had to make sure that every time
she saw me that she saw hope.

That she saw a reason to keep fighting.

The day before,

she didn't wanna talk...

The only thing she said about
what was gonna happen next was,

"How are you doing with this?"

Because she knew that... I mean, it seems
like a dumb question, "How are you doing?"

It's like, "You're my mom,

But she knew that I was strong
