Last Chance U (2016–…): Season 2, Episode 8 - Last Man Standing - full transcript

It's crunch time as the players take finals and weigh scholarship offers while still holding aspirations of winning a national championship at EMCC.

-[cell phone ringing]
-[Wagner sighs]

Oh, shit.

Hello?

-[man on phone] Hey.
-Hey.

What's goin' on?

Uh-oh. Talking back to the tutor,
like, the people...

Or the coaches?

Okay. And this has all happened
since he had surgery

or it was happening before?

All right. I'll see if I can get in touch
with him

and see what I can do.

Bye.

That was UAB on DJ Law.
Apparently, DJ has fallen off big time.

And he had surgery on his knee...

and he's not doing well...

since the surgery.

[laughing]

What's up, Miss Wagner?

What's up? Ah! [chuckles]

-Look at you.
-Don't do that. Don't do that.

[DJ] It sucks not to play this year,

but just did a lot of praying,
just kept hope, kept faith.

I strive to get to the NFL,
I strive to reach my goal,

strive to take care of my family.

[Wagner] They told me they have,

like, somebody at all your classes
and you can't miss anything.

-Taking classes. Every class.
-Tutoring for every class.

Miss class, you rolling 100 yards, so...

[Wagner] I think the kid is full
of a lot of self-doubt.

But a part of me also thinks
that the system is a little bit broken.

-Stanky leg.
-Ah, hit it with me. Ah!

-[Trickett] Look at this!
-[both laughing]

-What's up, bud? You good?
-What's up? Oh, yeah.

Where did... where did that go?

-Hey, I had to get it gone, man. Yeah.
-Huh? You good?

-How's practice?
-Awesome.

-Yeah?
-It's awesome.

-Isn't it? Cool, ain't it?
-Dude.

I figured. I'm like, "He's gonna love it

-when he does it." Yeah.
-Dude... Oh, my God.

[Wyatt] I went to Mississippi State.
Gonna be a regular student.

I got in a little, small cabin with a dog
out in the country.

Going to school at State
and working construction on the side.

And out of nowhere, a coach
from Mississippi State called me and said,

"Would you be interested in walking on
at Mississippi State?

We have a spot for you."

And I literally began shaking.

It was so surreal to me. I...

I've grown up a Mississippi State fan.

And then to actually put on the clothes
and live that lifestyle, it's so surreal.

You can't put it into words

when that's been your dream
your whole life.

[Dan Mullen whistles] Hey, listen up, men.
Hey, listen up.

You control every part of your future.
You control it through the attitude

that you have on the field
and the effort in which you give.

You control what the outcome
of your future's gonna be.

[Mullen] Young guys, old guys,
everybody's at different levels.

Everyone's getting reps today,
opportunity to improve

and go enjoy the game.

-[indistinct chatter]
-[whistle blows]

[player] Have a good game, man.
Have fun, man.

-Attack on three. One, two, three.
-[all] Attack!

[Wyatt] I'm a walk-on quarterback.
I'm redshirted this season.

Redshirts, we don't travel to away games.

We stay at the house
and cook out and watch it

and ring our cowbells
as loud as we can.

During home games,
you'll see us on the sidelines

with towels and workout gear.
We're called the "juice boys."

So, we keep the energy up and holler
as loud as we can throughout the game.

[indistinct chatter]

[players grunting]

[Wyatt] If I never touch the field,

you know, it's gonna be okay.

Kids all over the world would kill to be
in my spot.

The feeling of coming out of a tunnel
with 70,000 people screaming and hollering

is unlike anything I've ever felt before.

[crowd cheering]

[stadium announcer speaking indistinctly]

[John] For me, it was being
in that environment again,

on that big stage.

That's what I live to play for.
I love playing in front of people,

and I was just always chasing
that feeling.

[crowd cheering]

[John] One of my reasons
for going to Auburn

was just the chance and opportunity
to play right away.

So I got there and there was a lot
of talk about me being a starter,

and I felt real good because of the time
and the efforts I put in,

and, you know,
things didn't go my way, so...

Things didn't go my way here, it's like...

It almost felt like a remake
of what happened to me while I was here,

and it's playing out like that again,

so I'm just waiting on that opportunity
like it happened here

'cause I know once the opportunity comes,
I know I'm gonna take advantage of it.

[indistinct chatter]

[John] I wanna win the Heisman.
I wanna win a national championship.

And I wanna go
as a first-round pick in the NFL Draft.

[Wagner laughing]

-[Ollie grunts]
-[Wagner laughing]

[Wagner] What are you doing?
You look like a grown man!

-You look so different.
-I know.

-[Wagner] Look at your little hair!
-You was bound to go after that boy.

[Wagner] He always wanted to go to Auburn.

But I feel like
if he had gone to Auburn,

he might have gotten swallowed
in just the bigness of Auburn.

At that level...

people don't care about you
as much as people

as they do as football players. [chuckles]

When you're playing great,
they love you and you're the best,

but the minute you screw up,
everybody hates you and you suck.

That's not good for Ollie.
That's not a good environment.

-[Wagner] Love you.
-I love you.

I need, like, a big tackle with,
like, a... [grunts]

-All right.
-[people laughing]

-I'mma see what I can do.
-Okay.

-I'mma see what I can... [laughs]
-[Wagner] Okay.

-[Wagner] Bye, love ya.
-[Ollie] All right. Love you.

[Wagner] I feel like at Nicholls,
they truly care about him as a person,

and you could tell.
Like, people there love them.

Ollie needs to be at a place like that.

[crowd cheering]

[Ollie] I don't have a plan B.

[Marcel Andry] NFL comes, great. If not--

[Ollie] If it don't,
it wasn't meant to be.

The Lord will send me a sign, you know.

So, I'm just putting everything up to Him.

And whatever happens, it happens.

[announcer 1] Solid snap,
but it's blocked!

Ronald Ollie! Do your thing, big man!

Forty, thirty, Last Chance U.

-Eighty-yard touchdown!
-[announcer 2] How 'bout Ollie?

-[Wagner] Hey!
-[Ollie laughs]

Turn your camera around.
You're upside down.

-Who that?
-[Ollie on phone] You sideways.

-[Diamante] Ollie, what up, man?
-Hello, who that is?

[Wagner] There's all kind...
Here's Pounds.

-[Diamante] What up, man?
-Ah! What up?

-[player] Ollie, where the females at?
-Man, they out here, boy.

[all laugh]

[Ollie] If I had to go back,
I wouldn't go.

I just wouldn't.

[chuckles]

I wouldn't. Telling the truth.

-I'm in a better place now.
-Yeah.

-Mentally, physically, spiritually.
-Tell it like it is.

We'll sum it up for you.
Best of luck to you, Buddy Stephens.

Coach Buddy Stephens.

-Fuck that boy.
-[laughs]

[laughing]

I'm gonna give you the honest truth
about that guy there.

[marching band playing]

[crowd cheering]

[Donald Trump] I've just received a call
from Secretary Clinton.

-She congratulated us on our victory.
-[crowd cheering and applauding]

[Trump] So I also have to say,
I've gotten to know incredible people.

The Secret Service people.

[crowd cheering and applauding]

[Trump] They're tough and they're smart.

And I don't want to mess around with them,
I can tell ya.

[player 1] I ain't gonna lie.

You wouldn't think
they would take the nigga seriously.

I never thought he would win.
I thought he was funny.

[player 2] I know what gonna happen.

-I know what gonna happen.
-What?

[player 2] They wanted him to win

so he could be the first president
to get impeached. Watch.

Watch. He gonna do something stupid, bro.
They can't control him like they want to.

[player 3] Why y'all feel
like this man dumb?

-[player 1] I ain't saying he dumb.
-What make Hillary so special?

[player 1] I don't like her.
What are you talking about?

-So what are y'all complaining about?
-[player 1] I don't like Trump more.

[Isaiah] Y'all see that Trump sign
hanging outside?

That bitch said,
"Let's make America white again."

-[chuckles]
-[player 1] White again?

[Isaiah] I promise you. That said, "Trump.
We gonna make America white again."

And then had the flag by it.

[player 2] I know...
And had the flag by it?

And had the American flag by it. [laughs]

Man, I know this motherfucker
who grew up off EBT,

still using EBT right now,

got a damn Trump sticker. [scoffs]

Talkin' about he making the USA better.
[clicks tongue]

But my life still gonna be hard as hell.
I still gotta grind for what I want.

Still gotta grind for what I want.

Ain't nothing changed.

[Tooney] There's some happy folks
in this country today. Holy moly.

[Tooney] You know,
everybody wants on the train now.

I mean, the whole news media
was sick all last night.

I mean, they done sit up there
and dogged this man, dogged this man.

Well, now, this morning, all of a sudden,

"Well, I think he'll be all right.
He'll be all right."

You know, nobody wants
to hang with the loser. [chuckles]

You gotta win.

[Buddy] Let's go.
Make America great again. Stretch.

[players laughing]

[Buddy] Today, you bend everything.
Let's go.

-[whistle blowing]
-[coach] Good job!

Good job! Good job!

Hey, good job...

[indistinct chatter]

Come off the ball, Tyre!

Come off the ball!

[radio host] Before we get out,
this is our last official

football Friday of the year,

but the big one we want to talk about,
just for a second,

is a big one in Scooba at home next week.

State title on the line.
Number four versus number three.

Five
of the last six national championships

have come from those two teams.

East Mississippi hoping, if they win,
to get a shot at a national championship.

[Tooney] They're not gonna have a choice
but to put us in the national championship

if we win Saturday.

I mean, they got to do it.

If you look at strength of schedule...

versus the other teams that's undefeated,
you got to put us in.

Hopefully, we'll be at least number two.

And you got to be one or two
to play in the game, so...

If they don't put us
at number two or number one...

we gonna have to drive out
and have a little old talk with 'em.

-Yes, sir.
-[both laugh]

-Yeah.
-[Tooney] We'll get out the shotgun.

Yes, sir.

[Chauncey] I'm a dog.

Now, watch Chauncey. Look at Chauncey...

[Chauncey] I'm too clutch.

[player 1] You got two inches
off the ground.

-[Chauncey laughs] Sorry.
-[indistinct chatter]

[Chauncey] I had just made that tackle
on point, bro. I was dumb tired, bro.

Hey, so did number one
or number two lose yet?

-[player 1] I don't even know.
-So, no natty?

[player 1] We don't know yet.
They got one more game.

[player 2] They hate us.

All because of Jones. And they were trash.

[player 2] But we beat
the number one team.

[Wood] I've had people ask
about the national title,

I've had people ask me about bowls.

Win, you go to a bowl.

Win the game by the right amount
or whatever,

maybe you get the vote to go
to the big game. We'll see how that goes.

Last year, Northwest had a loss
and played for the national title.

Right now, we win this game,
we go to it 10-1.

But all of that's a wash
if I don't handle my business

and do what I'm supposed to this week.

[Wood] Not worried about what happened
last week, the week before,

or three weeks ago when we played 'em.

Interested in, right now,
what's in front of us.

-[Pellegrin] That's Stephens.
-[Milner] The team motto there.

[Pellegrin] There's Stephens 3:16.

[Milner] We are currently
ranked number three.

The two teams ahead of us
are both undefeated.

Garden City, who's ranked number one,
while Arizona Western's ranked two.

The only way that we jump into those two,
one or two spots

is if one of those two teams lose.

If we had beaten Jones
and were undefeated right now,

I think we would be ranked number one.

[knocking at door]

Thought we had a meeting at two o'clock.

Yeah, we do.

It's 2:07.

Hurry up, man.

What did we talk about earlier today?

-[Kam] Hmm?
-What... I mean...

Man, at some point, you gonna get it.

I mean, you got to, man.

At some point,
you're gonna have to get it.

I mean, 'cause babysitting you every day,
coming to get you,

taking you places, like, it's getting old.

And you should be tired of me
having to do that, like, every single day.

[Wagner] You do go to class better.
Not where I want you to be, but better.

[player] They had him rolling
after practice a couple times.

Nigga, you think...

You think I'm gonna listen
to anything Dav say anymore?

[Kam] Telling me corporal punishment...

That nigga better...
I mean, that dude better get out my face.

[Kam] This nigga came to my room
this morning talking about, "Kam, get up."

-I look at him like this.
-[Wagner] He's trying to help you...

-I said, "When do you talk to me?"
-[Wagner] ...go to class and succeed.

And then went back to sleep.
They sent Coach CJ in there to wake me up.

'Cause I fuck with Coach CJ.
Coach CJ, that's my homeboy.

[Wagner sighs] Okay.

What does CJ do that you like?

[player] He don't get on him
like Coach Williams.

No, I can't...
I can't dislike both of my coaches.

-[players laugh]
-[sighs]

-[Kam chuckles]
-I suck. I suck.

I'm the worst academic counselor...

-[Kam] You the best. Don't say that.
-...in the country.

[Wagner] My job is to make Kam better.

I suck at it 'cause I'm not succeeding
in making Kam better.

Kam going be straight regardless.

[Williams] Jackson,
you have got to squeeze.

How come I feel like
we watched this play before?

You did it again, okay?

When folks come in here
and watch film on you,

and they see that in the game,
that's what you're doing.

[players laughing]

Son, you have no excuse...
Reason to laugh or talk about nobody.

-[Williams] Quit it.
-It was funny.

-[Williams] You know what's funny?
-What?

[Williams] When you gonna be back
wherever you from with no scholarship.

Shit, I got offers.

[Williams laughs mockingly]
Okay. All right.

[Williams] An offer don't mean nothing,
son.

That's where it starts.

[Williams] Yeah,
that's where it ends, too.

With a commitment.

[interviewer] Do you worry that Kam,

just given what you witnessed
and how he struggled,

is that gonna hurt his recruiting?

Maybe.

[Wagner] I haven't had anyone
ask about him.

I know that he and Coach Williams
don't really jive either,

and that could be part of it.
That, you know,

Coach Williams may not be selling him.

I mean, coaches may come in and say,
"Okay, who you got?"

They may not watch a game.

"Okay, who you got
that I should be looking at?"

Well, if you don't like someone,
or you're not...

Then you're not gonna push their name.

You're gonna push
the kids that you like first.

[Buddy] People don't understand
what a great kid he is.

I'm gonna tell you something,
we've had kids here

that have gone on to other places
and don't have half...

-the moral compass that he's got.
-[Glenn Thomas] Really?

[Buddy] He made a bad mistake
because he was in a place...

And I'mma tell you something,
that's a kid

that'll never let that happen again.

-[Glenn] Right.
-[Buddy] For him, if he has a chance to go

and play at the level that y'all have got,
he'll have a chance to go the NFL.

And I'm just gonna be honest with you,
when y'all pull the trigger,

there's gonna be somebody else
pull the trigger.

-No question.
-And there's gonna be...

You know, and I mean,
I've seen it enough to know it's gonna be.

And so, I'm tickled.
I'm tickled you guys...

If you guys come back and offer him.

-Have y'all done that?
-Not that I know of,

to be quite honest, this is kind of our...

My first introduction to him,
to be quite frank.

[indistinct chatter]

[Wagner] He's played
so phenomenally this fall,

and it would be a shame
for a kid to do everything

that he needed to do
to rehabilitate himself,

to handle his academics,
to handle his play on the field,

and then not get an offer

based on something
that happened two years ago,

and that was a one-time,
isolated incident.

But if a player plays well enough,

I've never seen anybody not get an offer
based on a prior incident.

Now, we've also never had anyone with a...

issue with a female.

So, you know, I don't know.
Maybe that's different, I don't know.

So, how's year two been for you?

'Cause I know, last year,
you kinda got your shot to,

-you know, step in for DJ, but--
-[Isaiah] Yeah, I had...

I had a little injury
that slowed me a little.

You didn't have surgery,
you played through it?

Mmm-mmm, I played.

Are you gonna have to, or how you feeling?

-I mean, I can play on it now.
-Yeah.

But they say I have to have the surgery,
but it don't matter to me.

-Just tape it up and you're good.
-Yeah, tape it up and I'mma go.

That's good, man.

[De'Andre] Hey, y'all, on a serious note,

we're 46 hours out, so please,
no play fighting, none of that.

You know what I'm saying, it's too close,
all right? It's too close.

'Cause, yo, I almost fell
in the shower last night.

-[all laugh]
-I swear to God.

[player] Stop taking bubble baths
and putting all that shit in your water.

Lions on three, champs on six.
One, two, three.

-[all] Lions.
-Four, five, six.

-[all] Champs.
-I see him.

[Buddy] Run... Good. Nice job! Attababy!

[whistle blows]

-[player grunts]
-[Trickett] Hit it!

-Man, people need filming.
-Yeah.

Know what I mean?
It's games for guys getting...

-Hopefully get good looks, man.
-Yeah. That is true.

[De'Andre] That's what hurt
the guys last year.

-[Brian] Right. Not... Games... No film.
-[De'Andre] Not having enough film.

You know what I'm saying?
Teams want winners, man.

-Hell yeah.
-If you can win, keep on winning. Why not?

Everybody loves a winner.

the last time that she's gonna...

she's gonna perform at a half-time show,

and I missed that
to be here at nine o'clock.

To be here for this meeting.

And when you have people
that won't show up on time,

and they live less than 100 yards away,
I got a problem with that.

But I'm trying to be still...

and I'm trying to know
how I'm going to react to that.

But I can tell you one thing.
Tomorrow, I'll be on time.

I'll be on time tomorrow,

and I want to know
who's gonna be on time with me.

Okay? There's a lot going on tomorrow.

I'm not gonna let anything
disturb my focus.

I'm not gonna let anything
take the focus away.

I just... I need to know,
you gonna be on time?

[players] Yes, sir.

-Gonna be on time?
-[players] Yes, sir!

That's all I need to know.

If you gonna be on time
for a good old-fashioned butt whoopin',

either one of two things is gonna happen.

You either gonna give it
or you're gonna get it.

[Isaiah] He's a good coach.
He's a good coach.

He know what he's talking about.
He know what he doing.

I can just say what he...
Where he lacks at is

he lacks of knowing his players.

He lacks of knowing
where his players come from,

how they react to stuff
and how they don't react to stuff.

And then he just...

[grunts softly]

[clicks tongue] He misreads people.

[Camion] Being on our own
for that little time when we were alone,

we didn't have anybody to tell us,
like, what to do.

Like, at a young age
where we needed a lot of guidance.

So, I feel like that's
where we take on authority,

like, different than anyone else.

Like, we always think, "All right.
You're trying to screw me over."

Buddy... [chuckles]

I knew him and Isaiah would,
you know, butt heads,

'cause Isaiah is gonna be Isaiah,
and he's gonna question things

and Buddy don't like to be questioned.

When you're getting recruited, the coaches
get everything from your coaches

and then if all you're doing
is cussing 'em out

and, you know, being a headache,

that's what they're gonna say
how you are as a person.

And right now you're giving a,
"Well, I'm a shitty person."

I mean, sometimes
you just gotta keep your mouth shut.

[Wagner] Every year, it just seems to get
worse and worse with Buddy.

I don't know what the deal is,
and I just feel like it's not fixable.

And as long as we're working
against each other, like, I feel like I...

I can't get what needs to get done, done.

I mean, I need to go somewhere
where I'm working with the staff,

not against them.

[Chauncey chuckles] I hardly hit you.

[Wagner] I don't know, I mean,
there's some coaches that I think would...

That I've talked to
that I think would do it.

It's just they hadn't gotten a job yet.
[chuckles]

[Rodney] Hey, nah, be cool, be cool.

[players laughing]

[Wagner] Okay, all right. See ya, bye.

[Chauncey] Where's the job?

[Rodney] Ain't no way
you just accepted that job.

It's just coaches
that are in the running for jobs

are calling to see if I'm ready to leave.

-[player 1] Are you ready to leave?
-Yes.

[Dakota whispering] Go. Take the job.

I will take whatever job is offered to me.

I say you go on Twitter. [chuckles]

[Wagner] I could put a tweet.
"I'm opening my recruitment."

-[chuckling]
-Yeah! I'll retweet it.

-[Wagner] Oh, that's funny.
-You'll get picked up. Fast.

-[Wagner] I just gotta...
-You're a baller.

[Wagner] It's hard to do
when your livelihood's on the line.

[Buddy] This is a special group.

I've told you, I think it's
the best football team in America.

Okay? You're a very special group.

Get yourself ready mentally.
Hey, it's gonna be a mentality.

It ain't gonna be just showing up, play.

It's gonna be the mentality
you walk into the game with.

And it's, "I'm fixing to punch you
in the mouth."

That's it, bottom line.

[Isaiah] Your life depends on you
out there on the field.

And when you ain't on that field...

how you know your life going in the way
you want it to go when you ain't playing?

How you know your dreams are gonna
come out to be your dreams,

when you not playing?

[Wagner] Division I programs,

they may sign one
or two JUCO players a year.

Well, they have to sort through 769
junior colleges to find that one player.

But if you're winning
a national championship,

there's more of an opportunity
for you to get looked at.

[Buddy] You have to make a choice.

The coach you think you need to be
or the person I want to be.

My goal every day
is to do whatever we gotta do

to win a national championship.
That's my goal every day.

The mission will always be
to beat people asleep.

[Buddy] Grab a knee.

Some of you have never won a championship,
some of you have.

This is a blast, this is when it's fun.
This is what you came here for.

And it's time for Lions to do
what Lions do.

You know, I...
Earlier in the week, I, uh...

We were listening outside,
and we were listening to a song...

I had a song playing by T.I. and Rihanna,

talking about just how to...
Just live your life.

Guys, this is the greatest...

This is one of the greatest times
of your life.

Today, go out and live your life.
Go out and have a blast.

Go out and have fun.
Go out and play in front of your people.

And know that, "Hey,
I gave it everything I got today."

-Got me?
-[players] Yes, sir.

And if you do, baby, we're gonna size
some rings up on Monday, you got me?

-[players cheering]
-Get in here. Let's go.

Touch somebody.

[Buddy] "Our father..."

[all] "Which art in Heaven,
hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done..."

[crowd cheering]

-[De'Andre] Go, go, go.
-[player] Whoa!

[growling]

[Winfield] Good afternoon,
and welcome from Sullivan-Windham Field.

It is championship Saturday.

Coach Buddy Stephens
looking for his fifth state championship.

[announcer 1] The Lions hope
they have an opportunity

to play for another national championship.

[Winfield] A lot will have to happen
from here to there,

but, boy, first things first,
you gotta win this one.

East Mississippi will have
De'Andre Johnson on the field,

working out of the shotgun.

He's gonna stay on the ground,
hand the football to Horsley,

who's gonna come to midfield
and get into Northwest territory.

[cheering]

[roars]

[Wood] Here we go! Hurry up, get up!

Get up! Get up!
Hurry, hurry, hurry! Get set!

-[Wood] Hurry up. Back.
-[Buddy] Get set.

[Winfield]
Back to the line of scrimmage...

Give to Horsley, get into the end zone.

[Isaiah] Yeah!

[Wood] One, let's go, let's go,
let's go, let's go!

[Winfield] The Lions draw first blood
here today in this championship game.

[Isaiah] Keep that shit up, baby!
Let's go!

[Winfield] Say this about Wood
and this offense,

Lions wanna establish the running game.

Hey, man.
Can you go get me a hamburger?

-[coach] Yes, sir.
-Please?

Ah, hey, joking.

Seriously?

[Winfield] Lion defense see if
they can force a stop on this drive.

[Isaiah] Hey, defense,
get the fucking ball back.

[Winfield] Northwest will get it.

Play action,
throw complete for the first down.

-[Ed Holly] Just make a tackle!
-[Winfield] To the 19-yard line.

[Ed Holly] In freaking Cover-Three.
My Sam linebacker. Son of a bitch!

[Winfield] Out of the shotgun,
he's gonna drop to throw.

Looking, has time, is gonna hang it up
in the corner of the end zone.

-It's caught. That's a touchdown.
-[crowd cheering]

There were defenders there.
Just didn't make the play.

We had two freaking guys right there!

[Isaiah] They watched that man
catch that.

We got two freaking guys on his ass!
Horse crap.

Listen, I didn't want to have to worry
about a damn shutout anyway.

So now we don't have to worry about it.

We can keep playing.
We can do what we're gonna do.

[Winfield] We have a tied game
in the first quarter.

De'Andre Johnson will work
out of the shotgun.

[Earl cheers]

[Winfield]
Northwest stacks the line of scrimmage,

trying to force some poor decisions
by Johnson.

[De'Andre] Blue-22. Blue-22.

[Winfield] Blitz from Northwest.

Johnson's going to drop.
Let's see what he can do.

He's gonna throw downfield,

and he's gonna throw an interception
at the 38-yard line.

[Wood] Don't do that.

[Winfield] He's gonna get
into Lion territory at the 45.

Dadgummit!

[announcer 1] Most difficult throw
a quarterback can make.

Rolling left, trying to throw back right.

[Wood] Hurry off.
Get off the field, get off the field!

[Winfield] Northwest is in business.

Hey, when we throw the ball a bunch,
we throw interceptions.

Let's just make sure
that we don't have any more, okay?

-That shit was dead too, man.
-[yells indistinctly]

[Winfield] The quarterback
will work out of the shotgun.

Put a man in motion,
go on the speed give.

Get in the corner, get in the end zone,

and scoring the touchdown
from eight yards out.

And Northwest has taken the lead.
It's a 13-7 game.

All right, now it's our time
to get a score now. Let's go.

[Trickett] Settle down.

[Winfield] EMCC will get its offense
out on the football field.

Boy, Northwest is really showing pressure.

Johnson's gonna pull it down.
He's gonna keep it himself.

Come inside the 40,
inside the 30, inside the 20.

Run through a tackle,
get into the end zone

and score the touchdown!

And the Lions have taken the lead!

[Wood] Nice, nice, nice, nice.

[announcer 1] A 46-yard touchdown run
from quarterback De'Andre Johnson.

[Wood] Way to answer. 14-13. Let's go.

-[De'Andre] I scored.
-[Wood] Great job.

[announcer 1] Unbelievable play,
momentum right now for the Lions.

[Winfield] East Mississippi bring pressure
from the outside with Ryan...

-He's gonna pick it off.
-[Wood] Go, go, go, go!

[all cheering]

[Winfield] He just grabbed the football
coming off the hands of the quarterback

and he ran it in for a touchdown.

Let's go!

[Winfield] It's 21-13, Lions.
And the Lions seize the momentum.

Go get ready to play defense. Let's go.

[Winfield] Defense trying to get a stop.

Northwest, they trail 21-13.

[Ed Holly] Watch the ball.

Understand what we have,
we gotta get off the field.

[Winfield] Lions in a four-man
defensive front on third down...

-[Buddy] Come on!
-[Winfield] ...as Bowman wants to throw.

Now he's rolling.
Now he's gonna fire it downfield

-and it's caught.
-[Ed Holly] He's out!

-[Winfield] Was he inbounds?
-[Buddy] Are you kidding?

-[Winfield] They're gonna say he was.
-He landed out of bounds.

-[Winfield] Wow.
-He landed out of bounds!

[Buddy] Did you not see that?

[referee] No. I thought he hit and slid.

Y'all are so full of shit.

[Ed Holly] Are you giving 'em
the damn game?

Let's go, defense!

[announcer 1] Now red zone for Northwest.

[Winfield] Gonna hand it to Sloan.
He's gonna try the right side,

and he's gonna dive towards the goal line.
That's a touchdown.

-Jeez, Almighty.
-[Winfield] 21-20.

-Fourteen to go in the second quarter.
-Horse shit.

[Buddy] We can't sit there and stop!
Get a run up and hit somebody!

[Buddy]
Quit standing there watching stuff happen.

[Ed Holly] I hear you, I understand.
They got a...

Every time we stop, there's a penalty.

[Buddy] Get 'em running up
to the dadgum ball.

Stop standing around
watching crap happen!

We're missing tackles
and they're knocking us off the ball.

I don't really have an answer for that.

[Buddy] Making dadgum excuses
all the dadgum time, you know?

[imitates Ed Holly] "He's there.
He's there to make the tackle."

[in normal voice]
But he doesn't make the tackle.

[Winfield] EMCC, leading it 24-20,

but Northwest knocking on the door.

They'd like to take a lead here
in the first half.

-[coach] Dog!
-[Williams] Dog, Chauncey!

[Beard] The East Mississippi defense

has gotta really challenge themselves
and step up.

[Winfield] Northwest, they complete
the pass, scoring the touchdown.

It's 27-24.
Northwest has taken the lead.

[Buddy] Guys, we've stopped them one time
the whole first half.

We've stopped them one time. Okay?

-[Ed Holly] We're going man, then.
-I don't care what you do.

You do whatever you gotta do to stop 'em.
That's your job, not mine.

Baby, I'm telling you,
we should have watched film once again.

[Buddy] Get inside, let's go.
Get inside, let's go!

[announcer 1] That's gonna bring us
to the intermission

in a state championship Saturday.

Are you listening to me?
Get their ass off the sideline.

[Winfield] 27-24. Northwest with the lead.

[Buddy] Let's go, let's go.
Get in your locker. Let's go.

Sit down!

[Buddy] Now here's the deal.

On defense, we gotta get off the field.
You're playing flat.

They're just playing
harder than you right now.

Y'all gotta be a part of a team.

I gotta have everybody in here.
I gotta have every coach, every player.

We all miss plays,
but we just gotta pick each other up.

If you don't pick each other up
and play hard for each other,

you will come back in here
with sad, sad faces.

Open up some whoop ass on them
in the second half, understand?

[players] Yes, sir.

[Buddy] Let's go.
Hey, you're the better team!

You are the better team!

Come on, dog.
They line up across from you.

[stammers] They trying take your manhood.

Don't let nobody take your manhood!
Let's go!

[Williams] This is the state championship
damn game, okay?

Somebody in this group
got to make a play.

Somebody in this group
got to make two plays. Hell, even three.

We have to step up and make a play.

Okay? If you want it,
go get this shit now.

-[Kam] I want that.
-[Williams] Okay?

'Cause in 30 minutes,
we walk back in this locker room, okay?

Don't have no damn regrets.

Come on, let's go get this bunny!

[Winfield] Thirty minutes away
from deciding the state champion

and potentially deciding a berth
in a national championship.

[announcer 1] You're trailing by three,

you have to be more disruptive
defensively.

Kam Carter has to have a big second half
to still win a state championship.

[Winfield] Holgorsen wants to throw.

And he's gonna be bottled up.
He's gonna be dropped.

[Williams] Good, good, good, good.
Great job, good job!

[Winfield] We called his name
a moment ago, big Kam Carter.

[Ed Holly] That's what we do!

[announcer 1]
A big defensive move for the Lions.

[Williams] We gotta keep bringing it now.

[Winfield] Two receivers
and a H-back to the left

as Bowman wants to go on play action.

Fires back to the middle of the field...
It's broken up. It's intercepted!

-Yeah!
-[Wood] Go, go, go, go!

[Winfield] And coming back to midfield
and being pushed out of bounds,

Alexander Lipscomb.

Motherfucker! Whoo! Hell yeah!

[Winfield] The Lions seize the momentum.

[Wood] Hey, let's go for it.
22-Lion, old school, right.

22-Lion, old school, boy.

What do they call...

That's called...
that's called getting cute.

-[Isaiah] Let's go.
-[Buddy] Let's go!

[announcer 1] See if the Lions
take a shot downfield.

[Winfield]
They're going to fake the end-around.

Now throw down the field!
They got a man open! Isaiah Wright!

At the ten, and fighting his way
down to the one-yard line!

Let's go!

[Isaiah] Hey, I told you I'm here,
come on. I told you I'm here, come on.

Good shit. Good call, great call!

Let's start rolling, let's start rolling!

[announcer 1] Really, really nice play.

Marcus Wood called it up
at the perfect time.

[Buddy] We gotta work. Keep working.

[Winfield]
The Rangers of Northwest leading,

but the Lions knocking on the door.

Vijay Miller in the ball game,
now at quarterback.

He is a running threat.
He's going to keep it himself.

And he's going to drive,
and he's going to score the touchdown!

And the Lions are back in the lead!

[Wood] Take it in. Good job.
Attaboy. Attaboy.

[Wood] Real proud of that.
Great team drive.

Back to the lead, don't yield, understand?

Let's get after them. Let's go.

[Winfield] Lion defense
wanting to force a three and out.

Bowman, dropping, looking to throw,
under pressure. Dropped!

-Ball is loose. It's on the ground!
-[Williams yelling]

[Winfield] The right tackle
picked up the fumble,

but there was nothing for him to do.

-[Williams] That's it!
-[Winfield] It's fourth down.

[Williams] There you go, Tim!
Good job, man.

[Winfield] Tim Bonner got back
to apply pressure.

And we are going to have
our first sighting of a punter

here in this football game.

-End over end kick, that'll carry.
-[Wood] Catch the ball!

[Winfield]
Wright's gonna have to let it hit,

and it's gonna roll inside the five
and down to the two.

Wow, that thing got 26 yards of roll.

Hey, get him out! Jeez, Almighty!

[announcer 1]
Big mistake from Isaiah Wright.

Catch the ball! Get off the field.

-[Wilkerson] Isaiah.
-[Isaiah] God--

-[Wilkerson] Come on!
-[Wood] Don't do that.

Don't do that. Don't be like that.

-Nah, man! Bro, he always... [groans]
-Don't do that. Don't do that.

Every single time, dog!

[Wood] Don't be like that.

-[Buddy laughing sarcastically]
-[Wood] Don't be like that.

Oh, God.

-[Buddy] Oh, God.
-Oh, my God.

[Isaiah] This shit really pissing me off.

[exhales sharply]

We need you levelheaded.

Just next time, catch that bitch.
All right?

Just get under that motherfucker
and just run as fast as you can.

Hey, let me tell you something,
losers and cowards start pointing fingers.

You understand? Losers and cowards
start pointing fingers.

Don't point a finger! Make a play
and we'll all come pat you on the back.

[Winfield]
Buddy Stephens and these Lions

looking for
their fifth state championship.

[announcer 1] If you're Northwest,
you need to get downfield, get points.

If you're EMCC, another big possession
for the Lions' defensive front.

[Winfield]
It's Northwest here on third and four.

Play action, look to throw,
it's gonna be batted down.

That's gonna bring up fourth down.

[announcer 1] Kam Carter
absolutely whipping his man.

-[Williams] Good.
-[Ed Holly] That's the way to settle in!

-[Williams] Let's go!
-[Ed Holly] That's the way to make a play!

[Beard] Taking over. That's what you need.

You need to have guys step up
on a big game.

[Williams] Keep bringing that.

-Hell yeah!
-You understand?

[coach] Return. Punt return.
Are you on punt return?

[Buddy] Hey, give me somebody else
for Isaiah.

[Isaiah] If y'all gonna put me
out of everything,

don't put me back in.

-[coach] Go. Get in! Get in!
-Damn!

[De'Andre] Don't talk about it,
do something.

[Isaiah] Y'all starting to piss me
the fuck off.

[announcer 1] Punting formation,
fourth and long for the Rangers.

[Winfield] It's a snap
that's gonna bounce back, almost blocked.

But a spiral's going to get off.

And, oh, no.
It's gonna be fair caught at the one.

-[Wood] He fair caught that inside--
-[Buddy] Did he catch that on the one?

[Winfield] Oh, my goodness.

[Buddy] Did he just catch it on the one?

[Isaiah] Y'all are yellin' at me
for not catching it!

-[Buddy] Why?
-What you want me to do?

[Buddy] Why? You stand on the ten
and you don't catch it!

[Buddy] Get it... Oh, please!

He want me to catch it,
but he don't want me to.

What the fuck?

You stand on the ten
and you don't catch it.

[Isaiah] Oh, my God, bro.

-Everything I do is wrong.
-[Buddy] Take his ass

and put him inside.
Hey. Take his ass and put him inside.

You stand on the ten
and you don't catch it, Isaiah!

-[Isaiah] Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
-[Buddy] Stupid!

-[Isaiah] I said, "Yes sir."
-[Buddy] That was stupid!

[player] Don't talk back.

He'd have yelled at me
for not catching it.

-Don't talk back.
-[Isaiah] I know.

I'm straight. I'm fine.

[Wood] Isaiah!

[Buddy] Don't put his ass in there.
Don't put his ass in there!

[Isaiah] You don't want me in?

[player] Shut up! Look at you.
You 'bout to get--

[Isaiah] Shit, dog! Y'all niggas
telling me to shut up... Bro...

And the bad thing about it is,
Isaiah never does anything wrong.

[Buddy] I get so sick of that.

[Isaiah] I told you
they was gonna take me out!

-[Wilkerson] Isaiah. Stop!
-[Isaiah] No, I'm telling...

I'm not doing nothing!

[Isaiah] I didn't do anything.
Y'all gonna stop telling me to do shit,

and I ain't doing it.

I don't give a fuck
about what all y'all niggas say.

-[coach] Hey!
-[Isaiah] Fuck them niggas!

They always telling me to do something.

I'm a grown-ass man like everybody else.

-[Eszmone] Hey, Isaiah.
-[Isaiah] Damn! [chuckles]

[Buddy] Show some dadgum emotion
and let's go.

Hey! Somebody better show
some dadgum emotion, you understand?

Hey, or I'm gonna find somebody
that, by God, will! Let's go!

[Winfield] And that will take us
to the fourth quarter.

They are 15 minutes away from a title.

Horsley's the running back
to the left side.

He's going to get
the handoff to the right.

He's gonna spin
and fight his way down the 15.

[announcer 1] Horsley.

[Winfield] Jay, when the season started,

he was a pretty clear number-two option
at running back.

You get to the end of the season,
all of a sudden,

he is the guy that, when it matters,
you want him to have the football.

Tell you what, guys.

A touchdown would really go a long way
to putting this game away.

Third down and goal to go,
Johnson's gonna set up the screen.

Raphael Leonard's gonna fight
to the goal line and score!

-Let's go!
-[man] Yeah!

Yes. [grunts]

[Trickett] Attaboy!

[Winfield] The big receiver
is able to find his way in,

and the Lions add to their lead,
and we have a 38-30 game.

[announcer 1] Two minutes

from a fifth state championship
in nine years.

We're getting too excited, baby.
Game ain't over. Game not over.

It ain't over, you understand?

We're gonna go on this field.

It's gonna be up to us
whether we win or lose.

-Yes, sir.
-This is why you came here.

[Winfield] All right. We have
12 seconds to go in this football game.

Wanting one more stop out of this defense.

[announcer 1]
The Rangers cannot stop the clock again.

[Winfield] Sloan is the running back.
He's gonna have the handoff.

He's gonna have a big gain.

He's into the secondary, he's at the 40!
And he is tackled at that spot.

[crowd cheering]

[Buddy] Come on, guys! Let's go!

[Winfield] They're gonna stop it
while they reset the chains.

Northwest will spike the football,

-and they're gonna have one more play.
-[Buddy] No...

-[Winfield] Three seconds.
-[Buddy] No waving yet.

[Winfield] Bowman has the arm
to get it to the end zone.

[announcer 1] If you get a stop here,
the ball game is over.

-[Ed Holly] Back up!
-[Buddy] Go get him! Go get him!

[Winfield] Bowman under pressure.

[announcer 1]
Chauncey Rivers gets in the back field.

[Winfield] Gonna throw back
to the left side. Complete, but dropped.

That's gonna be the end
of the football game.

[all cheering]

[Winfield] The Lions of EMCC
have won the state championship.

The best team in the best conference
in junior college football.

[excited indistinct chatter]

You did it, man. I'm so proud of y'all.

[player] Size me up, baby.

[Winfield] It was not
without drama, but the Lions got it done.

Thank you so much.

[announcer 1] The Lions holding out hopes

to play for another national championship.

[Winfield] We don't know what's next,

-but what we do know is...
-[all cheering]

[Winfield] ...this is the best team
in junior college in the United States.

[Buddy] By golly, he owes you a ring.

-He owes you a ring, man. [laughs]
-[players cheering]

[indistinct chatter]

[interviewer] You've won more
than Bull Sullivan.

[Buddy] Not yet.

If we play in a bowl game,
win that one, then we'll be tied.

You know, in today's society, um...

would his style of coaching work?

You know, I don't know. I find it hard.

Found it hard.

Growing up, I was a big Alabama fan.

In Alabama, if Coach Bryant said it,
it was gospel and...

Everybody loves to win.

Sometimes they don't care how.
They just love to win.

[interviewer] You were raised in Alabama?

[Buddy] Born and raised.
Born in Boaz-Albertville Hospital.

My mom passed away about 21 years ago...

and, um...

my dad, uh...

you know, didn't handle that well.

-[dog barks]
-[Buddy] Just twist.

Found out a few years back
that he had cancer.

[Buddy] He's on hospice now.
Not doing very well.

How long have you been up?
What time you gonna go to bed?

Oh, uh, I got up at 10:30 this morning.

[Wafford] I had trouble sleeping.

[Buddy] Don't get to see him
as much as I want to

because of football.

[Buddy] My brother is really his caregiver
along with his hospice nurse.

My dad's a very quiet guy.
Not a... not a heavy talker.

[Wafford chuckles]
That kid always wanted to play sports.

Started out in baseball,
then he got to basketball,

then he got into football,

and then he asked his mother one day
if he could play ice hockey.

[chuckles] His mother told him, "Son,
man, you too big to play ice hockey."

The only reason he was wanting to play
'cause he got to hit people.

Yeah. [chuckles]

[Wafford] He's hard-headed
as a billy goat.

You know, when he was growing up,
he had a mind of his own.

[chuckles]

Well, that was him.

[Wafford] Always wanted to play sports.

[Buddy] Part of this, for me,
is having something to remember Dad by.

'Cause our conversations
are not extensive.

"How you doing?" "Good."

[Wafford] I wanna ask you,

how did that coach
that got y'all in trouble,

when you played him...

[Buddy] It was fine. Everything was...
Everything was fine.

I get so tired of hearing about that.

Everybody whines

and people watch the documentary
and they whine and they cry...

[imitates crying] "Bad language."

[imitates whining]

I get so tired of hearing all that whining
and crying about everything, you know?

[Wafford] Yeah.

[announcer speaking indistinctly on TV]

[Wafford chuckles]
Buddy takes after his mother

'cause he's high-spirited.

I think by him using
his temper on the sideline,

-it's to try to make the kids better.
-[inaudible]

Chris was more conservative.

-[Buddy] I love you.
-[Chris] I don't wanna lose him, Bud.

[Buddy] I know.

[Chris] He's not doing good, though.

[Buddy] I know.

I know. I know.

Thank you for taking care of him.
Thank you. I love you.

I love you so much.

[Wafford] To have these two boys,
see them grow up,

I know that their mother
would appreciate it

for the way they have turned out to be.

[Wagner] Yeah, um...
When is y'all's season over?

[Wagner] No, I...
This'll be it for me, but, yeah,

it's just a matter of, you know,
the best opportunity

and the best place and the right fit
and all that, yeah.

So, but, yeah, I'm definitely interested.

[Wagner] Yeah, definitely. No doubt.
Okay. All right. Bye.

[player] Who that is?

-[player] Yeah, you know.
-[chuckles]

People.

[player] He wants you to come there
and help his students.

[Jay] That's crazy. So you leaving?

[Wagner] What do you think?
Do you think I should leave or stay?

What is your opinion?

What people really don't know,
she the brain behind all this.

Because if it weren't for her,
it wouldn't be no championship.

'Cause, hell,
half of us wouldn't be eligible to play.

[Jay] You like a mama to us.

You know, some of us ain't never had that.

And it kind of like a little blessing
for us, you know.

'Cause, you know, we actually got somebody
that actually care for us.

Man, I wasn't even close
to no honor roll in high school.

My first semester here,
I was on the dean's list.

[Jay] By me coming down here, I grew up.

You know, Scooba, like,
made me become a man,

and you is a big impact on that.

But my outlook on you leaving Scooba,
if it benefits you,

if that's something that you wanna do,
I mean, do it, you know.

You know, like y'all always telling us.

Follow your dream. Follow your dream.

[typing]

-Comma, encouraging and positive?
-[woman] Yeah.

-I like that?
-Mm-hmm.

-You like it?
-Yeah. Maybe one too many...

Yeah. That's good.

[Huebner] Following
a state championship game,

before the final national rankings,

I decided
that I would kind of put together

some notes and some facts
and some figures, some...

In a document and send it to the voters

to make our case for why East Mississippi
should be ranked number one.

Or at least in the top two

and get a chance to play
for the national championship this year.

-So is that...
-I think we're good.

Just maybe a little bit...
Still a little bit too wordy here.

[Huebner] "Exceptionally" is probably
a word I didn't need.

[Huebner] People are well aware

of East Mississippi
Community College football.

The incidents last year
certainly created national attention,

and I'd like to think folks are being
as objective as they can.

It's just hard for me to know.

[Buddy] You don't know.

[Buddy] I mean, you don't ever know
how it's all gonna work out.

Just 'cause of voters. You don't know
who's gonna give you first-place votes.

You don't know who's gonna give you
last-place votes.

I mean, you don't know.

You don't know who, uh...
How people view your team.

You know,
just from what I've heard there's...

there's been some...
There's been some, uh...

There's been some stuff stirring.

[cell phone rings]

[Trickett] But once you get
past that first, you're gone.

[Wood] Yeah. Hey, Coach.

[Wood] Wow. How about that.

Wow.

What? Ah.
Don't even worry about that today.

We'll figure out...
We'll worry about that later.

Yeah. That's crazy.

That's crazy.

It's crazy.

This year's El Toro Bowl will once again
be a national championship El Toro Bowl

-featuring our Arizona Western Matadors...
-[audience applauds]

...against Garden City of Kansas.

Our one and two teams will be fighting
for the national championship

here in Yuma once again,
so a round of applause.

[audience applauds]

[Chauncey] What else can you do?

You know? That's how I feel.

Like, what else...

What else needs to be done? You know?

You do so much
to try to get what you deserve,

and yet little has come.

[Wagner] It's a shame.

If you're not number one
or two in the nation,

then you're playing in some bowl game...

[chuckles]

...that didn't matter.

[Tooney] Hell, we don't care who you like
or who you dislike.

Vote for who's the best.

The fight cost us
two national championships,

and that's wrong.

I mean, dude, that pisses me off.
That's wrong.

[Williams] No matter how hard you work
and no matter how hard you coach,

recruit, encourage, counsel,

there's always somebody
out there to get you.

You know, here's the deal.
It was very disappointing, you know,

to go through a season
and win 11 straight games

and still not able to play
for the national championship.

I mean, it's very disappointing.

But, you know, that's life.

Things happen, you know,
and you got to keep moving.

Final exam schedule.
Here we go. Forward to...

Oh. Louisville, they said they gonna call
and request my transcript.

-[Wagner] Okay.
-[chuckles]

[player] Who you gonna sign with?

Shit. I don't know yet.

[Rodney] Who all you got?
Put it like that.

-Who all I got?
-[player] That's a bad question.

Louisville, Mississippi State, Ole Miss,
West Virginia, South Carolina...

Maryland, Michigan State...

-[player 1] Sign with Louisville.
-[player 2] Roll Tide.

Shit. Alabama trying me.

[blows raspberry]

-[player] Hey, so where you going, bro?
-To the crib.

[Chauncey] So Texas Tech
ain't saying nothin'?

Yeah, they saying something,
but I don't know, bro...

[Rodney] Don't you got, like, 200 tackles?

I don't know what I wanna do, bro.

[Wagner] So did you talk to anybody
after the game? Coaches?

I ain't talk to nobody after the game.

I'm endangerment to society.

[Wagner] Stop saying that. No, you're not.

I'm endangerment to society.

-[Wagner] No. But you're not.
-You were sitting right here,

-when the coach told me.
-[Wagner] You're not.

[Dakota] You wanna know
what every coach came up and said?

-[player] What?
-"Dakota, we like your film,

we're just gonna have to go back
and check with our head man,

our head president to see
how we're gonna deal with,

uh, your little situation."

[Dakota] They hit me with,
"With your little situation."

[Dakota] That's what they hit me with.
Y'all don't wanna be like me, man.

-[Chauncey] Shit. I've been there.
-Don't fuck up one time.

-[Chauncey] I got three under my belt.
-Three?

[Chauncey] Shit.
You didn't look my name up.

[Dakota] Going to jail
for some green, though, is different.

That shit actually getting legalized
in some states.

I'm an endangerment to society.

[Wagner] You made a mistake.
Big freakin' deal. Quit being negative.

I'm not negative. I'm very positive.

I'm just, what's the word? Realistic.
You know what I'm saying?

'Cause I felt like I've done everything
I was supposed to do.

I haven't had straight A's
since high school.

[sighs]

[Buddy] Ed, I need to find out
where we are with our guys, quick.

If anybody needs an emergency course

that we need to take online
to get 'em graduated.

[Buddy] So, let's make sure to stay
with Brittany on the phone

and make sure to get anybody
graduated that doesn't pass a class.

Who, right now, is at risk?

Five guys, but we've just got to get
through this week.

This is championship week
for us in the classroom.

-[Buddy] All right.
-They know it, they understand.

We just have to get through this week.

[Wagner] In the beginning of the year,
I would see on Twitter,

you know, these offers that he had gotten
from some pretty big-time schools,

and then now it's,
I mean, it's D-II schools

that are calling about him
and that have asked about him.

I just...
I think that it's character issues.

You know, I think that
it's everybody not really sure

who they're gonna get
when they sign Isaiah Wright.

[Isaiah] What everybody know,
I'm not a D-II talent.

I got D-I talent,
but people just stopped talking to me.

[chuckles] I can't say nothing more
about it 'cause I really don't know.

-I just know they stopped talking to me.
-[child exclaims]

They stopped getting in contact,
and it went from there.

[chuckles] ULM, then West Georgia.
That's it.

All the other ones I had,
I don't know where they went.

They don't...
They didn't talk to me. They didn't...

They stopped calling me. Things turned.

And I did my own thing
and now that's what I gotta do.

People ask, "You think
your brother's better than you?"

And I go, "Yeah, he is. I ain't gonna lie.
He is better than me."

It's hard for a big brother to say,
but, you know,

when you're watching him, like,
"I wasn't doing that." [chuckles]

Yeah, I believe he's better than me.

But it's gonna get down to the point,

you're gonna go to a school
where you don't wanna go to,

because you're cussing your coaches out.

[teacher] You got an hour and 15 minutes.
It's 25% of your grade. Good luck.

[Williams] You know, the one thing
about this game of football,

if you can play, people will be willing
to work with you,

take a chance with you.

[Williams] But the bigger the issue,
the bigger the problems...

no matter how talented you are,
you know, some people won't touch you.

Bang. You see that shit?
That's that shit, right there.

Cash that shit right there.

[Brian George] Taken your finals and...

-No, finals start tomorrow. Mm-hmm.
-Start tomorrow.

Okay. I gotcha.
So, today's, like, study day?

-Mm-hmm. Yeah.
-Gotcha. Cool.

[man] How you feel?
Are you gonna knock 'em out?

[Tim] Oh, yeah.
I ain't got nothing too hard.

The only thing I got hard is math,
and that's it. Only thing I got.

[Wagner] Gimme your pinkie.
I need to know.

[Tim] What?

That you are gonna finish
what you have started.

[Tim] Yeah, you saw my grades.
I'm gonna graduate May 5th.

And get my grades and ball
and get to the NFL and make the millions.

So I can buy me a piece of land
in England or somewhere.

-[Wagner] Yes.
-For sure.

[Wagner]
Here's what I need you to remember.

Man, here you go.

-What that is?
-[Wagner] You,

your personality and this happiness
and excitement is fantastic.

[Tim] Mm-hmm.

It is who Tim Bonner is,
and it is fantastic.

And don't you let anybody squash
who you are.

-[Tim] Yes, ma'am.
-You hear me?

[Tim] Yes, ma'am.

But don't get too comfortable
to where you let it hurt you.

-[Tim] I won't. I promise, Miss Brittany.
-Okay.

[Tim] I promise you.
You trust me, you believe me?

-I believe in you.
-All right. At least you believe in me.

[voice breaking] I always will
believe in you. You got this.

[both chuckle]

[both laugh]

I'mma change to "nincompoop"
and my nation.

-[Wagner laughs] Nincompoop!
-[Tim] You heard me.

[Tim laughs]

[man] Whoo! You gonna get that done.

[Ed Holly] Ryan Lee, who has offered you?

[Ryan] University of Western Kentucky.

-WKU and WCU, right?
-Yes, sir.

-Good. Anybody else?
-No, sir.

All right, you're gonna get a bunch more.
Who has officially offered?

Troy and Bowling Green.

All right, no problem.

[Dakota] I wouldn't say discouraged,
I'm just...

I feel like, personally,
I could compete at a high level,

you know what I mean?

And I wanna compete against the best,
you know. I wanna...

But if it's not meant to be for me...

then God has another plan for me,
you know what I mean?

[Dakota] Supposedly, Texas Tech,
they have a scholarship waiting on me

or whatever, but I'm not allowed
to enroll into the school until August.

Still waiting to hear back from them.
They're trying to appeal that decision.

So, once I hear back from them...

I'll decide where I'm gonna go from there.

[player] I told you what I'm doing.
Assembly line and a food truck.

No, no, no, no, no, no.

-We're going to get our degree.
-[player] That too.

[Wood] All right, man.

[Wood] Let's talk. Let's see what you got.

I know I talked to you earlier,
and I've talked to you throughout.

Any other visits
or anything set right now?

[De'Andre] Uh, not in stone, but...

[Wood] Okay, all right.

All right, so you're looking at anything

that you can get.
December grad still, correct?

[De'Andre] Correct.

[De'Andre]
Hopefully something comes through.

If not, then I'll have to take the route,
you know...

Take whichever route God positions
with me.

-Mm-hmm.
-So, it is what it is.

Gotcha. Gotcha.
Man, let's definitely stay in touch, okay?

-All right.
-'Cause, again,

you got a home with us, for sure.

So, I'm gonna be rooting for you,

um, but let's definitely stay in touch,
all right?

-All right.
-Good to see you.

-Take care.
-All right. Thank you.

-Congratulations on everything.
-Thank you. Later.

[De'Andre] Everyone knows
where they're going.

But I don't know where I'm going.

Everyone told me
since last year, you know,

"You go to East Mississippi,
and you do your time

and stay out of trouble and you win.

Knock out your two years there

and by the time you come out,
you should be back on top."

But I'm not back on top.

[De'Andre] You know,

I have one day left out here,
and I'm going home with nothing. Nothing.
