La Brea (2021–…): Season 2, Episode 8 - Episode #2.8 - full transcript

- There is a room in that
building with a portal.

It can connect to the future.

- Josh and Riley went
through it in 1988.

- Your only chance
to save your children

is that glass building.

There are dangers there you
will not be prepared for.

- OK, here we go.

- You don't have
to be afraid of me.

I am your father.

- Why is my mother in 1988?

- Give me a chance to
explain everything.

- Why do I feel like
you're playing a game?

Prove yourself to me.
Let us use that portal.

Let's go get Josh.

- Josh!
- Riley!

- Every time that portal's
been to a new time,

it creates a new sinkhole.

- Another sinkhole's
gonna open in the ocean

and cause a tidal wave.

But this one we might
be able to stop.

- So what's the plan?

- Create a virus that will
shut the Lazarus program down.

Stop the sinkholes and
destroy the portal for good.

- I have a brain
tumor. It's terminal.

But I found a new
purpose down here,

and I promise to fight.

- Are you and Dad
back together again?

- I love your father,
but I love Levi.

- The only thing
harder than you guys

splitting up the first
time would be having

to live through that again.

- If you don't come back
to 10,000 BC with me,

we can't stop these sinkholes.

- Looks like we're
going with you.

Here we go.

Eve. Eve, wake up!

- You all right? Did
you see something?

- As long as you're
with me, I'm fine.

Let's go.

- Eve?
- There you are.

Hey.
- Hey.

Did you see the kids?
- No.

We should head to the
clearing. It's just up ahead.

- OK.

There's no sign of them.

- They'll show up.
- Yeah.

- There's something
you're not telling me.

What is it?

- No, no.

I just want us to
get to that building

before the tidal wave hits.

- We will.

- Hey.

- There you are.

- Hey.
- Mom.

- Izzy.

Hey, where's Josh?

- I don't know.

I thought he'd be with you two.

- I'm sure he's
gonna be here soon.

- Ty.

I didn't know you were back.
- Oh.

Well, we are neighbors now,

so I thought I'd come
help out for the day.

Just in time too.

Looks like you guys
finally got serious

about renovating the place.

Good thing I put myself
through med school

working in construction.

- I think we all realized we
might be stuck here a while.

We want to get home,

but in the meantime, why
not put down some roots?

- Hey, you know,
I've been thinking

about something like that too.

I asked Paara to marry me.

- That's wonderful, Ty.

- But in order to do that,
I need a proper ring.

- You want me to make one?

- Well, I heard
you're a great artist.

Do an old friend a favor?

- I know just where to start.

- Hey!

You busy?
- No.

- Ty has proposed to Paara and
asked me to make him a ring.

I'm gonna head to
this cave I saw

and try to find an amethyst.

Will you come?

- Yeah, I'd love to.

- Hey.

You love this thing.

- I'm making a fresh start.

I don't know, Ella.

I'm as happy as I can
ever remember being.

It's time I left all
this stuff behind.

- Does this have anything
to do with Lucas?

- We kissed.

And?

- And it was nice.

Which is why I'm getting
rid of everything

connected to the old me.

- Connected to Aaron, you mean?

- He gave me that bracelet.

He's had a hold
on me long enough.

- I get it.

It's just...

It's not as simple as
throwing things out.

- I just want to move forward

and never think
about Aaron again.

Now let's find that cave.

- Hey, someone
please remind me not

to volunteer to help next time.

- Keep pushing. It's
nearly vertical.

We got this.

- Sorry, what was
your name again, mate?

- Wyatt.

- Wyatt, I appreciate
your enthusiasm.

- More muscle, less talking.

- I can't hold it.

Whoa!

Damn it!

- It's OK, it's OK.

Push it up.

There we go.

- Hey, next time,

man, maybe it's better
to do what you can handle

and not risk someone
getting hurt.

- Hey, how is your hand doing?

- I can't feel anything.

Other than that, fantastic.

- Hey, don't listen to Wyatt.

He has no idea what
he's talking about.

- Yeah?

Ten minutes ago, you told me
he was a construction foreman.

I need a break.

- Lucas.

- Whoa, Ty.

You OK?

- I'm fine.

It's just a headache.

Been getting them a
bit more regularly

since that fight with Taamet.

- Well, at least
the best man won.

- Honestly, it's bittersweet.

I still can't believe
someone let him go.

- So does Paara have any leads?

- Yeah, they're out there
searching for Taamet

and the traitor who freed him.

It's just a matter of time
before they're caught.

And I imagine they'll be
dealt with accordingly.

- Yeah, yeah.

Totally. Punish them all.

Hey, look out!

- Oh-ah!

- You OK?

- Yeah.
- I think so.

- Damn, that was a big buffalo.

- On second thought, maybe not.

- What is it?

- I'm not exactly sure
what's happening in the sky,

but animals react badly to
sudden changes in the weather.

Come with me.

Oh, man.
- What?

- We're screwed.
- Give them here.

There got to be
hundreds of them.

- Guys this is, like,
really, really bad.

- Why? They're miles away.

- Yeah, for now.

But you see what's in the middle

of their migration path, right?

It's us.

The buffalo in that
herd are exhibiting

some strange
unfocused movements.

They're anxious.

If something else startles
them, they're gonna run.

And they're gonna
run through here.

- One of those
things knocked down

that beam like a toothpick.

Imagine what hundreds will do.

- They'll destroy
everything we've built.

- Still no sign of Josh.

- What are we gonna do?

- We only have a few hours.

I hate to say this,
but we need to head

for the building and
upload the virus.

- Yeah, I think she's right.

We made a plan to meet here.

Josh will make it eventually.

I'm sure he'll be OK.

- I hate it.

I hate this, but I don't
think we have a choice.

And Josh knows to keep quiet
about what we're doing.

- Even if we go without Josh,

I don't know if we
should keep quiet.

Shouldn't we go
down there first?

- They deserve to know

we're about to trap
them here forever.

- Riley's right.

I mean, come on,
those are our friends.

We've got to tell them what
we've done sooner or later.

Might as well do it now.

- No, that's just gonna
start an argument.

It's better if we do it
and just explain later.

- So we're just gonna
choose their fate for them?

- We already have.

That's why we came
back, isn't it?

- OK, hey, we don't
have time for this.

- I agree. You see that haze?

That means an aurora
is about to open.

- It's also when the sinkhole
in Santa Monica opens, right?

- Exactly.

And if that happens,
it'll create a tidal wave

that'll take out far more
people than in your clearing.

To stop it, we need to go now.

- Come on.

- This is where we
need to part ways.

- We're splitting up?
- We have to.

James won't let Caroline
in the building,

let alone near the machine.

- But I can access the
building's computer system

from a research station
about 4 miles that way.

- All right, Riley
and I will go with you

in case there's trouble.

- Yeah, and we'll go to
the building with you, Dad.

- Izz, I don't think...

- Look, I know you think
you can trust your father,

but he is dangerous.

- She's right.

We said we were all
in this together.

- That's not a good idea.

I know James.

The only person he'll
want to see is his son.

He may see Izzy as an
extension of his legacy...

- But not me.

I'll make him suspicious.

- I don't like this.

- I don't like it either,

but I'm not gonna be
the reason we fail.

We'll be OK.

- Let's sync our
watches to 12:00.

In three hours, we act.

Once you get past
the security lock,

I'll upload the virus.

The upload needs to
reach at least 85%

to close that sinkhole.

But to shut the
machine down for good,

it needs to upload completely.

- All right.

- Hey.

Be careful.

- Seriously?

A stampede of
prehistoric buffaloes?

- Well, animal migration was
one of my areas of study,

so I can say with some certainty

that we are totally screwed.

- Well, I've got a plan.

It's called, let's get
the hell out of here.

- And go where?

- I can think of dozens
of safer places...

The caves, the beach, the hills,

those mountains to the south,
that forest to the east,

literally, anywhere
other than here.

- He's got a point.
- No.

- What do you mean, no?

- We're not running.

We've been doing that
since we got here.

Nothing's gonna take
that away from us.

- I agree.

- And how do you propose
to defend this place

against a wall of
flesh and hooves

running at 40 miles
per hour, huh?

- Well, we don't
fight it, Judah.

We divert it.

- Man, I think that
taser fried your brain.

- Oh, no, no, wait.

Actually, I think diverting
the buffalo could work.

- Thank you.

- Herd animals
are easily guided.

All we need is some
kind of barrier.

- Right, right.

We pour the tar out around
the edge of the clearing.

We light that,
boom, wall of flame.

Scares the buffalo,
redirects them around us.

- Nice.
- Thank you.

- OK, if we get a
bucket brigade going,

we can lay that tar in no time.

- All right, count me in.
- Come on.

Everyone grab one.
- Don't say I didn't warn you.

- So I need to get
to the portal room.

But last time, James didn't
let me out of his sight.

- You want me to pull the
fire alarm or something?

I got a better idea.

The infirmary is on the same
level as the portal room, so...

I was thinking...

- Are you serious?

- Hey, it's got
to be convincing.

- So you and Mom kissed.

- Excuse me?
- When you two said goodbye.

- Yeah.

- Are you guys back together?

- I hope so.

- Well, why'd you
say it like that?

- No, it's, you know, I
got a lot on my mind, so...

- Dad, we promised that we
would watch each other's back

when we came down here.

You can't keep things from me.
- I'm not.

- The last time our family
wasn't on the same page,

we pretty much broke apart.

I thought, once we
got back together,

things would be different.

I guess I was wrong.

- I had a vision.

In '88, before we went
through the sinkhole.

- I knew something happened,
but I thought those stopped.

- Yeah, so did I.

And it was of your mom.

And she was in my
arms and surrounded

by all these red
star-shaped flowers.

I think she was dead.

- What?

- Hey, look... hey, hey.

Just because I saw it,
doesn't mean it has to happen.

- Do you know where it happens?

When does it happen?

Dad?
- Look.

Hey, look, until I can
figure out what it means,

all we can do is just
focus on this, OK?

OK?
- OK.

- Hey!

- We got company.
- Hey, you!

- Whoa, hey, hey, hey,
hey, hey, hey, hey.

We don't mean any harm.

This is James' granddaughter.

I'm his son.

I need you to tell
James that I'm back,

and I need to talk to him.

- Gavin, it's good to see you.

I hope you found your son.

- I did, yeah.

You remember Izzy,
your granddaughter?

- Hey.
- Hey to you too.

I'm glad you found
what you wanted,

but I'm surprised.

Why come back?

- Look, I know I had
my doubts about you,

but getting my family back,
it made me realize I...

There's so much I don't
know about who I am,

where I'm from.

I want to know everything there
is to know about my family,

and I want Izzy to
learn all about it too.

- Well, no one cares more
about family than I do.

- What happened to your arm?

- When we came back down,
the landing was hard

on all of us, so...

- Well, we'll get you
patched up in no time.

Take him to the infirmary.

Meanwhile, allow me to show
you around the building.

After all, you're part
of this legacy as well.

- Right this way.

- The research station's
a mile due north.

We need to pick up the pace.

- Hold up a second.

Before we get there, Riley
and I have some questions.

- What questions?

- I've been running all
this over in my mind,

and I just want to
be completely sure.

The only way to
stop these sinkholes

is to destroy James' machine?

- Yes.

- And once we do
that, there's no way

of getting back to our own time?

We're just trapped here forever?

- Guys, I think it
might be too late

to be asking these questions.

- Your whole family's down here,

so I understand this
isn't your problem.

But once we do this, my
daughter will never see

her mother or brother again.

So maybe indulge me a bit?

- Yeah.

- I just want to be clear.

This is our only option?
- Yes.

And I'm sorry, but the only
way back to your own time

is through James' machine,

and it's incredibly destructive.

We tried for years
to make it safe,

but we failed.

It's just not stable.

- Why can't it send us
home, then we shut it down?

- Because every time it's
redirected to a different time,

a new and catastrophic
sinkhole opens.

So you decide, Sam.

Which city do you want to
destroy so you can go home?

- Dad, Dad.

We don't have a choice.

- Look, I understand what
you're going through.

I sacrificed watching
my own son grow up

for the sake of this mission.

But this, the virus I created,

is the only way to
make things right.

- All right.

I guess that answers
my questions.

- OK, let's keep going.

- Fill it with tar,
light it on fire,

and scare the buffalo away.

- What did I miss?

- Josh, you're back!

Oh, man, this could
be the best day ever,

with the exception of
the buffalo that are

about to destroy our
home, but never mind that.

It is so good to see you.

- It's good to see you too, man.

I missed you.
- Hey, you doing all right?

- Oh, yeah.

I twisted my ankle when I
was walking to the clearing.

- Sit, rest.

So where's everyone else?

What the hell happened up there?

- They found us in '88.

We all jumped through together.

They should be right behind me.

We had to come back.

We couldn't abandon
everyone down here.

- OK, tell me you at least saw
"Die Hard" on the big screen.

- I wish, man, no.

It was pretty boring, honestly.

- Whoa, whoa, whoa, boring?

What are you talking
about? Are you insane?

I heard your
grandmother was in '88.

Did you meet her?

Did she tell you anything
about that crazy building?

- It's a long story.

- Hey, Josh, you can talk to me.

We're bros, remember?

Whoa, hold up.

OK, I think we got an issue.

No, no. Stay off the ankle.

I'll be back.

- I'm telling you, man. Look,
the width is good, right?

The camber, its perfect.

- Camber?

You literally have no idea
what you're talking about.

Man, I do this for a living.
- All right.

Let's talk to the guy in charge.

Hey, man. Look, I
think we're good here.

Yeah, we can just
extend the fire line?

Bill the Builder
here, he disagrees.

- Yeah, I do.

Look, first, we need
to widen the line.

We need more surface area
to get the fire bigger.

Otherwise, I don't think
your 40 mile an hour stampede

has any hope of being diverted.

- Lucas?
- What?

- Say something.

- I don't know.

Listen to Wyatt.

- Thank you.

- Oh, hey.

You OK?
- Yeah.

- Then why did you
hesitate just then?

- Because I don't know a damn
thing about tar or buffalo.

- So?

A good leader motivates
and delegates.

- Scott, I don't
want to be a leader.

- OK. So why are
you doing this then?

For Veronica?

OK, man, look, you don't have
to be a tough guy around me.

- All right, ever
since Mom died,

I've been trying to change.

I'm trying to be better, right?

And you know what?

It doesn't happen
overnight, but the way

that Veronica looks
at me makes me believe

I can be the kind of
guy who stands up,

defends his home.

- Hey, Lucas, you
are that person, OK?

And even though you can be
a massive jerk sometimes,

you're still a jerk
that I want to follow.

Don't doubt yourself.

- Thank you, Scott.

You should start a
podcast or something.

- The amethyst for Ty's
ring is just up ahead.

- Wow.

- It's beautiful, isn't it?

- You think one of
these will work?

- Yeah.

- I'm gonna check out
the rest of the cave.

Oh, my God.

- I know this tree.

Those flowers, I remember these.

- They're the ones Aaron
used to make you draw,

the ones you said
grew in his old home.

- So what are they doing here?

- I can't be here.

- Your father had
the same expression

when I showed it to him.

- It's really impressive.

- So are you,

choosing to follow
your parents down here

to an unknown future.

Oh, it must have been hard

giving up the modern
comforts of the 1980s.

- TVs and cars, they're cool,

but family is the only
thing that matters.

- I couldn't agree more.

I did have family here
once, a son and a wife.

- What happened to her?

- She left.

In fact, from what I understand,

she traveled to the same
time you were just in,

1988, Los Angeles.

I would have thought
you'd crossed paths.

- We didn't.

- Huh.

Let's see how your
father's doing.

- Actually, can we
get some food first?

- Sure, we'll stop by
our kitchen on the way.

- Hey, James.

What's this tree?

- Oh, that's our arbor caverna.

It's a fairly common tree here.

It only grows in
this time period,

and strangely, mostly in caves.

We're studying it
to figure out why.

Stunning, isn't it?

Well, let's see about that food.

- Oh, my God.

Mom dies in 10,000 BC.

- There's a stream up ahead.

- Let's grab some water

before we make our last
push to the station.

- Be right there.

There's nothing
there. Damn it.

- Sam?

Everything all right?

- It's all good.

Just looking for an
extra water bottle.

- I was right about him.
- You were.

He went straight for the drive.

What are we going to do?

- We're not going to overreact.
That's not going to help.

Let's just try talking to him.

Sam?

Riley?

Riley!

- What the hell are they up to?

- Veronica, are you OK?

- Yeah, let's head back.

- Listen.

I think we need to figure
out what those flowers mean.

- It doesn't mean anything.

Aaron probably saw
them in a book.

It was a coincidence.
- I don't know.

I always figured the flowers
were some weird image

from his mind, but maybe
he knew about this place.

- How? He had never
been here before.

- Maybe there's a bigger
reason why we're here.

- This doesn't make any sense.

How is it that even
when he's not here,

he finds his way back into
my head right when I'm happy,

right when I'm trying
to move past him?

- I understand, but we
can't just ignore this.

- Ella, that man took
away everything we knew.

If you're looking
for an explanation,

you're never going to find one.

All I can do is promise
myself a fresh start,

and nothing is going to
stop me from doing that.

- OK.

I won't bring up the
flowers again, I promise.

- Dad, stop.

Dad, what are you doing?

- We need to get to
the research station

before Eve and Caroline do.
- Wait, wait!

What are you going to do there?

You want to stop the
virus from uploading.

- I can't let them
destroy that machine.

We can't give up our only
way back to Mom and Andrew.

- But you can't do this.

- I spent my life
making hard choices

no one else wants to make.

If you don't want to be
a part of it, I get it,

but I'm doing this.

- Just a little sting.

State-of-the-art antibiotics.

It'll kill any infection
you got here or in 1988.

- So what do you do here?

- I came onto Lazarus
as a physicist.

Then your father
put me in charge

of our classified research.

Eventually, made me his
chief of operations.

- Ah, he must have
seen something in you.

- He gave me a chance
when no one else would.

So now I give him my loyalty
and protect him from anyone

who might be a distraction.

- Why does that
sound like a threat?

- Mastering time travel presents

a plethora of problems.

Your father is on the
verge of solving them,

but he can't do that if
people pull his focus away

from where it needs to be.

- Ah. You mean people like me.

- I don't care if
you're family or not.

If anyone tries
to upset his work,

it's my job to deal with them.

- Good to know
he's taken care of.

- Just give me a
moment, and then we'll

get you back to your father.

- You know, if you
have work to do,

I can find my way
to my father myself.

- It's all right.
I'll take you.

- I need you to
authorize this, ma'am.

If I could have your
signature there.

- Hey!

- Change of plans.

You're going to take
me to the portal room.

Let's go.

- OK.

I think we're nearly done.

- A few more of
these should do it.

- Whoa.

Damn.

Jesus, that's the aurora.

Unbelievable.

- Whoa.

- Hey.

I was just on the watchtower.

That sound spooked the herd.

- They're coming.

- You ready, Lucas?

- Yeah. OK, everybody,
buckets down!

Stand back! Stand back!

Fire in the hole.

OK, everybody, clear out!

Go find some cover!

- OK, they all need to go now.

- Excuse me.

We have a situation
on level five.

Everyone needs to go
straight to their quarters

until further notice.

- Take me to the access pad.

- This is it, but it
won't do you any good.

Only James can activate it.

- We'll see.

It worked.

- There it is.

- Eve!

- Riley, where is your dad?

- I don't know.

It's like he snapped
or something.

- Well, what did he say?

- He said he can't
let you go through

with uploading the virus.

- We need to work fast.

Let's hope Gavin made it.

- He did it.

- And now for the main event.

Time to upload the virus.

- What's that?

- Something's messing
with the power.

- Or someone.

- Come on!
- Dad, Dad, Dad!

Dad, stop!

- Stop! Sam, think about this.

- Eve...

- If you kill the power here,

people are going to die.

- Everyone safe?

- Yeah, there's not
a soul left outside.

It's going to work.

- Here we go.

- Look, there's some buffalo
from the head of the pack.

- Come on, come on.

Come on.

Yes.

We did it.

- Don't celebrate yet.

We still got a couple
hundred more to go.

- Usually, buffalo stay
within about 100 yards

from the rest of the herd,

so I say we got a minute
until they're all here.

- No, no, no, no, no.

- Was that a fish?

- What the hell?

- What is that?

- Oh, my God.

- What is going on?

Where is this coming from?

- Oh, man.

- It's salty.

- Because it's
coming from an ocean.

- What?

- In 1988, there's a sinkhole
in the Santa Monica Bay

that's opening right now.

My parents and everyone
else aren't here

because they're
trying to stop it.

- How?

- By shutting off the portal.

- But if they do
that, how are we going

to get out of here this place?

- I don't know.

- We've got bigger
problems right now.

The rain's putting out the fire.

Hear that?

The buffalo are coming.

- What do we do now?

- You can't do this.

- I have to. I
don't have a choice.

- Dad, that aurora, it
looks like it's closing,

which means the
sinkhole's going to close.

The virus is working.
There's no tidal wave.

Dad, you can't stop
the upload now.

People are counting on us.

- I can't let you do it.
- Eve...

- Listen to me, Sam.

We all came back down
here to save lives.

Thousands of people
are at risk right now.

And I am so sorry it's coming
at such a great cost to you,

I am, and I know how
easy it is for me to talk

about sacrifice
because I'm not making

as big a one as you are, but
this isn't about me, Sam.

And it's not about you. This
is about the greater good.

And I know how important
that is to you.

What Caroline is trying to
do right now is save lives.

You have to let her do that.

- Sorry, I can't.

- OK, Sam, if you're
going to do this,

you have to go through me.

- Eve.
- I'm not moving.

- Dad, Dad!
- No, no.

- Don't do this.

Dad.

Please.

- Wait.

- Rain's stopping.

- The virus must be working.

Look, they're almost here.

Just listen to the hooves.

- That's it.

Listening.

Vibrations.

Animals hate loud noises.

If we can't stop the
stampede with fire,

maybe we can with sound.

OK, Ty, Ty.

Keep banging on that horn!
Scott, you're with me!

- Hey, hey!
- Honk your horns!

We need you to make
noise, as loud as you can!

Everybody, honk your horns!

- Louder!
- Honk your horns!

- Make some noise!
- Honk your horns!

Honk your horns now!

- As loud as you can!

- Keep going, man!

- Ahh!

Ahh!

- It's working! Keep going!

Keep going!

Whoo!

Yeah, come on!

It worked!
- Yeah!

- Yeah!

- Come on!
- Hell, yeah.

- Whoo!
- It worked.

Hey, you're back.

- Hey, what happened here?

- Oh, just a
stampede of buffalo.

No big deal.

- That's what that sound was?

- Yeah, yeah, but
we diverted them.

- How?

- Decided to make a stand.

- You risked your life
to save the clearing?

Why?

- It's our home.

- We did it.

Oh.

- Ty?

Ty?

Ty, Ty!

- You're making a mistake.

- No, I'm not.

- Kiera, I got your alert.

- He's uploading a virus.

- James, stand back.

- So you did find your mother?

- I did.

- Gavin, I promise,
whatever she said to you,

it's not the truth.

- And what you're
saying is the truth?

- I've been down here
working on this machine

since the day she left.

I'm on the verge of
stabilizing the portal.

That means safe time
travel for everyone.

No more auroras.

No more sinkholes.
- You're lying.

- He's not.
- He is.

- If you finish that upload,
all my work will be lost.

We won't be able to
rebuild this machine.

We'll be trapped
down here forever.

- I know.

- What about Mom?

Dad, there's a tree
here with the flowers

that you saw around her...

The red star-shaped
flowers from your vision.

The trees, they only
grow here in 10,000 BC.

Dad, this is where she dies.

- Gavin, I can help you.

I can get her home, but I
need my machine to be working.

You just have to put
your hand on the pad.

It will stop the upload
and save your wife.

- What about the
sinkhole in Santa Monica?

- It's closed.

Whatever you were trying to stop

in 1988 has been stopped.

- Every time you
use the machine,

the sinkholes are going
to keep happening.

I won't have that
blood on my hands.

- You won't if you work with me.

We're so close to a solution.

We can fix the machine
and save your wife.

You just have to trust me.

- I don't trust you.

- Almost there.

- Believe me, I can fix this.

I promise.

- It's 98%.

- I can save your wife's life.

- Dad.
