JAG (1995–2005): Season 8, Episode 23 - Pas de Deux - full transcript

Webb and Mac continue undercover in a CIA operation in Paraguay. A familiar face shows up among the Latinos on the other side. The admiral and Meredith start announcing their engagement. Harm tries to get some information about Webb and Mac through Catherine Gale, a lawyer at the CIA. Unexpectedly Harm poses as Catherine's fiance for the benefit of her dying mother, and Bud conducts a sham wedding. The friend in Paraguay runs into big trouble. Catherine helps Harm in his quest for word about Mac. Webb and Harm take part in eliminating a drug dealer who has supplied arms to terrorists, then they get into a firefight at the hacienda of another such dealer. Mac reminds the CIA guys that Marines do not leave their own behind.

I can make you
a rich man, Raul.

I have a line
on a Predator B...

combat-ready.

Just the airframe?

The works: airframe,

control van,
four Hellfire missiles.

GARCIA:
That would be worth
a considerable sum

on the open market.

How would you move it
out of America?

It's in Israel.

Why do you
need me?

I can obtain the weapon, Raul.

I have no way to transport it.

You have all the contacts.

So far, you've earned my trust,
Mr. Williams...

as has your wife.

See that you don't abuse it.

( speaks Spanish )

Grab the diamonds, darling.

No backup?

No, you're on your
own, my friend.

I've done business
with Sadik many times.

He will pay me
because I am
useful to him.

When they are satisfied

the circuit boards
are legitimate,

they will give
you the drugs,

and you will bring them
back to my casa.

( phone ringing )

Central Intelligence Agency.
Catherine Gale's office.

Uh, may I speak to her, please?

Who may I say is calling?

Commander Rabb
from the Angel Shark inquiry.

Hello, Commander. Hold on.

Uh, actually, I'm going

to have to call back.
Excuse me.

Sir. Meredith.

At ease.

Uh, I'm making
the rounds,

just thought
I'd let you know

that I...
well, I finally proposed

to Meredith,
and she accepted.

Uh, just to avoid
any more confusion,

I brought her
along to, um...

To confirm.

It's official.

Well, that's wonderful news.
Congratulations.

Did this... just happen?

In a manner of speaking.

( laughs )

No date yet,
but I'll keep
you informed.

I'll look forward to it, sir.

Carry on.

Sir. Ma'am.

( phone ringing )

Rabb.

Commander, it's Bud.

I'm at home with Harriet.

Sir, I wanted to...

thank you
for screwing my head back on.

Yes, sir. He looks
so much better that way.

Sir, if you need,

or anybody else there
needs anything

just let me know, okay?

Well, I appreciate
the sentiment.

Uh, listen, I'll see you
tomorrow, all right?

Okay, yes, sir. See you then.

Okay.

( dialing phone )

( phone rings )

Central Intelligence Agency.
Catherine Gale's office.

Uh, it's Commander Rabb
for Ms. Gale.

Oh, she just left, Commander.

Oh. I-I don't, uh, seem to have
her cell phone number.

It's a secured line.

Well, could you
patch me through?

I'm afraid not.

It's important
that I speak to her.

Well...

she generally takes
an early dinner out.

You don't happen to know where,
do you?

Why didn't you tell me you'd
enlisted Gunny in this plan?

Need to know.

Well, I'd like
to know what else

I need to know,
Clay-- now.

Alvaro, will you pull over
to the side

when you
get a chance.

Mrs. Williams needs
to relieve herself.

Controlling information
is one thing.

What are you now,
a mind reader?

Some things can't wait.

( gunshot )

Why did you
just kill that man--

and don't give me
that "need to know" crap.

Doesn't leave a lot
of room for discussion.

Yeah, well,
just so you know,

I'm about to punch
your lights out

if you don't start
making some sense.

I'd say "Try it,"
but I think you would.

I didn't have
any choice, Sarah.

You asked me why
I wanted you--

a Marine--
on this mission.

The truth is, there've
been some leaks

in the Company down here.

Well, you just plugged one.

I needed somebody
I could trust...

someone on the outside.

Is that why
you got Gunny into this?

Look, I don't want to wait

until I'm staring
down the barrel of a gun

or a Senate investigation.

I can't tell you.

You're going to have
to trust me.

Well, those two things
don't go together,

and apparently,
neither do we, partner.

I'm catching
the next flight out.

Bye.

You're an ass,
you know that?

I do.

You know that I can't leave

while you've got Gunny
out on your string.

Well, we're leaving
the car behind.

It'll look like
another drug hit.

It's probably
the 12th one today.

What, we're just going
to walk all the way
to Ciudad del Este?

No, we'll hitch.
In this condition?

Nobody would pass up
a pregnant woman.

Shiitake egg rolls.
Thank you.

Commander?

Ms. Gale. How are you?

Surprised.

You eat here?

First time. How is it?

Eclectic.

Those look interesting.

Shiitake egg rolls.

Would you care to join me?

Well, you look busy.

You'd give me a good excuse
to close out my day.

All right, thank you.

So, uh, Commander
Turner tells me

you're still calling him
about the Angel Shark.

Some of the crew's families
have requested more information

than we originally agreed
to release.

The Agency's refused?

We'll work something out.

Oh, I'm sure you will.
You're very good.

Am I?

Yeah. You had me dancing.

And you see yourself
as the standard?

Well, only if you
grade on a curve.

I always enjoy meeting
other attorneys

outside the courtroom.

Oh, yeah? Why is that?

The deep ones...

tend to drop the mask...

reveal things about themselves.

Oh, well, what is
it I'm revealing?

An inability
to drop the mask.

What is it you need
from me, Commander?

I need to know the
whereabouts of one
of your operatives:

Clayton Webb.

I don't have access
to that information.

Care for an egg roll?

How did you know Alvaro
was the leak?

I didn't know for sure,
till we got to the meeting,

and I saw that look of
recognition between him
and Sadik's men.

Why kill him?

We've lost three agents

in the last seven months
down here, Sarah.

Sadik obviously had an
informant with close
ties to the CIA.

So you appointed yourself
judge, jury and executioner.

I had to stop
the bleeding.

Ha! A bullet
through the head--

that's a novel approach.

How'd you get Gunny involved
in all this, anyway?

I offered him a
job, he accepted.

Had him reassigned
three months ago.

What's his backup?
We're his backup.

How did he get in
with Garcia?

We gave him a good
cover story.

The rest he did
on his own.

What were Sadik's men
talking about, anyway?

Praising Allah,

testing circuit boards,
buying the Predator--

you know,
all in a day's work.

So is there anything
else you want to know--

in this new era
of openness?

Yeah. Why Paraguay?

There are over 20,000
people of Arab descent

in Ciudad del Este alone,

so terrorists can
blend in easily.

And Sadik?

Sadik funds his operations

by shaking down
local Arab merchants.

Takes as much as
20% of their profits.

Then he transfers the funds
by wire to the Middle East

or moves them out
of the country as
illegal weapons.

Okay. So, what's our plan?

As soon as we locate
these Stingers,

Señor Garcia's
usefulness will cease.

And you've got
first crack.
Yeah.

Then we go after Sadik.

And how are you going
to manage that?

Bring in the big guns.

See? That wasn't
so hard, was it?

What?

Leveling with me.

Who says I did?

Don't forget,
I'm a spook.

( vehicle approaching )
Ooh, ooh.

Gracias.

Look, just make one call.

No.

Look, I need to speak to
someone inside the loop.

There's no way into the loop.

The loop is closed--
that's why it's called a loop.

You're an insider--
you could easily...

You always seem
to be operating

under the... peculiar notion

that the CIA is your
personal information kiosk.

It is when a colleague of
mine is playing spook games

with an out-of-
control operative.

Was this colleague aware
of the risks at the time?

I believe so.

Look, I...
No, you look.

Anyone arrogant enough to think
that they can seduce me

into compromising
my security clearance

needs to seriously consider
the benefits of self-reflection.

( cell phone ringing )

Excuse me.

Yes?

I'm leaving now.

Uh, my mother has just been
readmitted to the hospital.

( chuckles ):
Wow. I've been blown off

before...

I'm sorry. Is it serious?

She's dying.
Congestive heart failure.

Check.

Hey, why don't I drive
you to the hospital?

I'll be fine.

No, no, no. I'll drive.
We'll take your car.

I'll catch a cab
back, all right?

It's settled. We're going.

Come on.

HARDY:
Alvaro Camacho worked for me
on and off for three years.

He was my best driver!

He was a mole!

Did you decide that

before or after you shot him
in the back of the head?

You're Station Chief here,
Edward.

Take a look at the ops
Camacho handled for you.

You'll find
he compromised them all.

Don't think I won't
check on that.

You come complete
with a reputation, Webb:

ruthless, efficient...

I'm sure Alvaro Camacho
would say as much,

were he still with us...

but you're no longer

the youngest Undersecretary
in the Company

or its rising star.

You're working
in Tierra del Fuego--

the far ends of the earth.

I had to think twice
about your request for my help.

And I do appreciate
your assistance, Edward.

Yet you're back here
asking me for more.

I want to finish what I started.

I want to take
out Raul Garcia.

And after that?

Sadik Fahd.

All in the same night.

You didn't tell me

Sadik Fahd was part
of the equation.

It was on a need-to-know basis.

I need to know.

You'll be fully informed
when I'm successful.

Meaning, if you fail,

no one will know
that you screwed up again.

Appreciate the vote
of confidence.

I'll give you what you want.

We'll take out
Raul Garcia first--

the DEA will thank us for that--

and then we take Sadik...

bam, bam.

But I'll be with you
every step of the way.

That way,
we both get credit.

You're going to have
to live with me

watching every move you make.

I work alone.
Do you?

Then who's that woman
you're traveling with?

No one special.

Look...

I don't like being down here
any better than you do, Webb.

Your ticket out of here

is going to have
my name on it, too.

GALE:
Thanks for driving me,
Commander.

RABB:
You're sure there's nothing else
I can do for you?

I'll be fine.
Thank you.

This is Commander Rabb.

Commander, my
brother Andrew.

Commander,
it's good to meet you.

I wish I had better news,
Catherine.

Um... we've, uh, made
your mother comfortable,

and I will check back
in an hour, but...

I'm not expecting her
to last through the night.

I'm sorry.

Thank you for
your efforts.

Yes.

She's lucid,
has been asking for you.

Excuse me.

Come in.

Oh, I-I-I...

No, no, please, come in.

I'm sure Catherine
would want you with her.

Come on.

RABB:
I...

Mom?

I'm here.

You brought him.

Come to me.

And a Navy man, no less.

What's your name?

Uh, Harmon.
Harmon Rabb, ma'am.

I didn't believe my daughter
when she told me.

She's been ducking my questions
about men for years.

And your rating?

I'm a...

commander,
JAG lawyer.

That would make sense.

So, what do you think,

Harmon Rabb--

do you and my daughter
have a future?

Well...

( laughs )

more than I'd anticipated.

( no audio )

( speaking Spanish )

Why did you come in?

Your brother insisted.

You should've
made up an excuse.

Oh, what, like, uh,
"Gee, I can't come in,

"in case I get mistaken
for the boyfriend

of a woman who
doesn't even like me"?

Let's just sit down.

I told my mom I found someone.

It was a fabrication.

I... steered clear
of specifics,

used the excuse that I didn't
know if it was going to last,

and, if it did,
I'd bring him by.

Why?

Because I sensed
she didn't have long.

I thought it might
give her closure.

Was she pressuring you
to get married?

My brother's divorced.

I'm her last hope.

You know, maybe you
ought to tell her the truth.

You didn't.

Hey, it's not my call.

It would be my last act
to my dying mother.

I appreciate that,
but I-I-I can't play this out.

Just for an hour.

Sorry. No.

That took me by surprise.

Ah... I am so thrilled

for both of you.

( sighs ):
I can't tell you
how good it feels

to finally hear
some positive news.

It's been a bear of year.

What she's
been through...

71 years old, they cut
her open three times.

She got infected twice.

Last one, it took her
over a month

just to recover
from the anesthesia.

( sighs )

This, for her...

this is
like manna from heaven.

It's great,
just great.

Honey...

Did... did you tell him
we set a date?

No...
That's fantastic.

Oh, congratulations.

( chuckling )

MAN:
Vector to Raul Garcia's
hacienda,

GPS coordinate number 34.

Aye, sir.

Steadying up on course
zero-two-eight,

level at angels five.

The target area
is ten degrees right,

two miles.

I have acquired the target.

Let's take them out.

We don't know
how many innocents

are sitting in
there with him.

It's a little late
for cold feet, Edward.

MAN:
Target area, one mile.

Garcia sold American military
hardware to a known terrorist.

I doubt he's having dinner
with the Vienna Boys Choir.

Passing target area.

Come back around
for a second look.

Yes, sir.

You're taking a chance
on losing him.

How bad do you want this?

Excuse me?
Do you really believe

Raul Garcia fits
the terrorist profile,

or are you just looking
for a feather in your cap?

You take him out
and you're wrong,

you're not going
to see the headlines

or the new duty station
you want.

You'll get us both permanently
reassigned to Leavenworth.

MacKENZIE:
I agree with Agent Webb.

It's worth the risk.

HARDY:
I don't remember asking

your opinion, Jane.

I'm a Marine Judge Advocate,
Mr. Hardy.

I'm well versed in
international law, and if you

fail to act, I will indicate
in my after-action report

that you alone
were responsible

for letting a known enemy
of the United States go free.

It's your court-martial,
Counselor.

And it's your show.

Thought it was our show, Edward.

Let's see how it turns out.

Call it.

Acquire the target.

November's a wonderful month.

My husband and I
were married on the 13th.

You would have liked him.

Commanded a destroyer.

He was involved in rescuing

hundreds of boat people
in Vietnam.

I still get Christmas cards
from a lot of them.

Shh. Mom,

you're talking too much.

There's so much
to talk about.

Do you want children?

Sure.

How were you able
to convince her?

Well, I just told her God gave
her those hips for a reason.

Steadying up on new course.
Zero-three-eight.

Target acquired.

Target locked up
and in envelope.

Master armament
switch on.

Select missiles one and two,
two second interval launches.

Ready.

Take 'em out.

Fire weapons one and two.

Missiles away.

( laughter )

( speaking Spanish )

( beeping )

That's what I call
a surgical strike.

( speaking Farsi )

TECH:
I got a Baby Huey
on the cell phone.

Put him on the speaker.

And get a fix
on his location.

Got it.

This is Mother Hen.

Bumblebees are leaving the hive.

Awaiting instructions.

Get out of there,
Baby Huey.

Repeat, get out
of there now.

Roger that.

Oh, and congratulations,
Colonel.

For what?

On your bun in the oven.

It looks good on you, ma'am.

( man shouting over speaker )

( shouted command )

What you're looking for
is not here.

Good-bye.

It's going to be a long night
for you, my amigo.

( engine starts )

( speaks Farsi )

GALE:
You could have left
my hips out of it.

Yeah, I guess
I could have.

You're punishing me
for this, aren't you?

You're not
feeling the love?

And you're welcome.

I do appreciate
what you're doing.

But you're right,
you should go.

It's too much
to ask of you.

What do you plan
to tell them?

You had a client
who just got arrested.

Next time your brother
asks about the wedding?

We had a fight and broke up.

It won't shock him,
trust me.

All right.

Uh, the item
you're after is out.

( slams machine )

This is about
as close to marriage

as you've ever come, isn't it?

Same question.

I guess career's always
gotten in my way.

Same answer.

You're a little more
closed-off than I am.

But your timing stinks.

An observation
from our last encounter.

She'd like to speak

to both of you.

Andrew, I...

It seems important to her.

How are you feeling, Mom?

I'm dying, darling.

I know this is terribly unfair,
but... I have a request.

Cancel the wedding.

You don't want us
to get married?

I want to see you get married.

Do it here, tonight.

Honey?

What do you think?

Were you able to trace it?

It's a hacienda.
20 miles north.

Well, let's get
him out of there.

I'm not sending a single man
into a situation

where I don't have intel.

He'll be dead before you
get your intel, Hardy.

He knew the risks.

At least, I hope you
briefed him

better than you
briefed this lawyer.

I'm a Marine.

We don't leave our men behind.

We can't be guided

by yesterday's battlefield
sentimentality.

Then I'll get him out of there.

HARDY:
You're going
to let this happen?

She's on her own.

Well, you won't be needing this.

You're better off
without her.

Give me a ride.

I thought I was
on my own.

You were.

Apology accepted.

It's not an apology.

It's just a statement
of fact.

Gracious as always, Webb.

And give me back my Glock.

What would you have said?

I thought we agreed
on an excuse.

That was before
she raised the stakes.

Well, I'm sticking
with it.

You told her we'd see.

We got to stop
this masquerade.

The longer we carry on,
the deeper we sink.

If we staged something simple,
just for her benefit.

I know a minister lives
a quarter mile from here.

Let me make a quick call.

He's Methodist.
Andrew...

Would this be
a problem?

Yeah.

Well, maybe he has
a nonsectarian service.

Look, you need

to sit down
and listen to me, please.

Okay.

Your sister and I
are not engaged.

In fact, we barely
know each other.

I was mistaken
for someone

who doesn't exist,
I played along.

You understand?

Yes.

I would say that
changes things.

Doesn't matter then
who performs the service.

Cana?

Yeah, sure.

Gracias.

De nada.

So...

there's one chance for you
to get out of here alive.

Show me the way.

Tell me
who you work for.

Raul Garcia.

He's a bad man to cross.

He'll get his drugs.

I want to do business
with him in the future,

but I know
who Raul Garcia is.

The question is
who you are.

You want my life story?

Your purpose
here would suffice.

What is your interest
in what is going on here?

Raul Garcia said
I'd be safe here.

Raul Garcia spoke stupidly.

Your safety is for me
to determine, not him.

ANDREW:
There are no options here,
Commander.

There is a woman in that
room who is expecting you

to make her final moments
worth something.

What... what if we tell her
we couldn't find a minister

and we do something
symbolic?

She wants the
real thing.

Come on, you're making this
my responsibility.

You started this.

You invented the boyfriend.

I just played along.

Yeah, but she did it
for the right reasons,

don't you think?

I mean, she knew
that our mother

would be encouraged
to know

that, after she was gone,
her child would be loved.

I wish I'd thought of it first.

All right.

I'll do it.

On one condition.

I get to pick
the silverware pattern.

Thank you.

Now all we have to
do is find somebody

who's willing to
impersonate a minister.

I can handle that, too.

Must be some friend.

Oh, he'll resist.

And you'll convince
him how?

Hmm, I'll give him
a direct order.

GUNNY:
You don't drink, Sadik?

No.

You don't know
what you're missing.

No, you don't know
what you're missing.

How long have you worked
for Raul Garcia?

Four months.

Before that?

I just kicked around
here and there.

Take a walk with me.

I want to show you something.

It's for you.

I made a call.

Who is it?

Quickly, he's waiting.

Commander Rabb.

Harrison Kershaw,
Deputy Director CIA.

Hello, sir.

Catherine tells me
you're trying to locate

one of our operatives?

Yes, sir. Clayton Webb.

Stand in line, Commander.

He's with Lieutenant Colonel
Sarah MacKenzie-- a JAG lawyer.

Yeah, I've been apprised
of the colonel's involvement.

Did you approve it?

No, Clayton's sailing
his own ship on this one.

How can I contact him, sir?

I can't contact him.

Well, it would help to know

if she were safe.

I imagine it would.

May I ask if you hear
anything...

You don't have the proper
security clearance.

Well, could I get it?

I'll update the Judge Advocate.

You can pluck on his sleeve.

Thank you, sir.

I must say, you have

a very interesting
service record.

If you ever find yourself
out of uniform,

give me a call.

I appreciate your time, sir.

Thank you.

Um...

Was he able to help?

We'll see.

But it looks like I found
a way into the loop.

Thank you for that.

It was only fair.

By the way, if I'd known
Colonel MacKenzie was involved,

I would have
made the call sooner.

Sorry.

SADIK:
You are American.

GUNNY:
Yep.

Born there, been to prison
there, not going back.

I understand.

Why are you working
for Raul Garcia?

For money.

Are you a man of honor?

Not for a long time.

Do you miss your homeland?

Don't you?

My homeland is occupied.

Sacred ground now defiled.

Until it is restored
to what Allah intended,

I will not return.

This I say:

Kill those who join
other gods with God

wherever ye shall find them.

And seize them,
besiege them

and lay wait for them
with every kind of ambush.

That's some pitch
for conversion.

I think we can come
to an understanding.

MacKENZIE:
If we're Gunny's backup,

who's covering us?

So, how did you two meet?

On a case.

I was opposing counsel
and I needed CIA help.

Catherine was assigned
to make sure I didn't get it.

Enemies at first.

Yeah, but I guess we admired
each other's strengths.

And what were yours?

He's a good sport... for one.

And what
did you like

about my daughter?

Uh... many things.

One would do.

Well, I guess...

I guess I admire
how deeply she loves her mother.

ANDREW:
The reverend is here.

( indistinct conversation )

This ring is a symbol
of your commitment

and will forever remind you
of the vows,

by which the two of you,

as registered partners,
have chosen to take.

Will you repeat
after me?

I, Harmon Rabb,
give this ring to you,

my companion,

as a symbol
of my vows.

I, Harmon Rabb,
give this ring...

to you, my companion,

as a symbol of our vows.

ROBERTS:
And with all that I am,

and with all that I have,
I honor you.

RABB:
And with all that I am,

and with all that I have,
I honor you.

I, Catherine Gale,

accept this ring from
you, my companion,

as a symbol of my vows.

I, Catherine Gale,

accept this ring from you,
my companion,

as a symbol of my vows.

And with all that I am,

and all that I have,
I honor you.

And with all that I am,

and with all that I have,
I honor you.

ROBERTS:
Would you please
join hands?

Now that Harm
and Catherine

have given themselves to
each other by solemn vows

and the joining of hands

and giving and receiving
of the ring,

I pronounce that they
are partners for life.

You may kiss.

( crying and sniffling
quietly )

RABB:
She hadn't
been sitting up?

ANDREW:
Not today. She didn't
have the strength.

ROBERTS:
Well, that's promising,
isn't it?

ANDREW:
Yeah, but
it's confusing.

CATHERINE:
Lieutenant,

thank you so much.

But please don't
let us keep you.

You should get back
to your family.

I-I wanted to apologize
for the wording, ma'am.

I grabbed the first ceremony

I could find
off the Web

and it wasn't until
I was reading it

that I realized it was for
same-sex couples from Denmark.

( all chuckling )

I don't think
she noticed.

ROBERTS:
May I...?

The ring?

Oh!

Of course.

Please thank your wife
for me.

Here, let me help.

( chuckling )

Wow... that's really on there.

It went on so easily.

( laughing )
RABB:
There it is...

Yeah... okay.

Whew.

ROBERTS:
Thank you, sir.

My best to both of you.

My thoughts are with you.

Thank you.

ANDREW:
I'll walk you out.

I hope you find
Colonel MacKenzie.

I'm confident
she's okay.

Yeah, I'm, uh... I'm sure.

It's not like she hasn't been

on dangerous assignments
before, huh?

It's just, uh, something
about this one.

I don't know.

I do.

DOCTOR:
Okay...

What's going on?

She's resting.

I'm, uh, I'm upgrading
her status from critical

to serious.
That work for you?

Her vitals have improved.

There's a significant reduction
of fluid in her lungs.

Due to what?

Possibly the experimental
medication we put her on

at the end of last week.

It's effects could've kicked in
later than we expected.

They just started
working now?

Something is.

Now, we'll monitor her
very carefully for
the next 48 hours,

and I'll keep you
apprised.

Thank you.

My pleasure.

Wow. ( wry laugh )

I think it was
the ceremony.

Uh, I don't know
what to think.

( sniffling )

Hey, hey...

Hey, you okay?

( crying quietly )

Listen, why don't
I take you down
for coffee?

We could, uh... we could
call it our honeymoon.

( laughs )

I'll be fine.
Thank you.

You sure?

Yeah.

You don't want
me to hang?

No. I've got Andy.

You don't have
to do this any longer.

Okay.

I'll call you, tomorrow,
and, uh, see how she is.

Unless I call you first.

( whispering ):
She thinks we're married.

Yeah, she does.

( sighing )

Grenades.

Where do you
think Gunny is?

I don't know.
Hacienda?

Thanks.

You don't need
to do that.

Uh, that's really
not necessary.

What do you
want to know?

What do you guys
want to know?

Cover me.

Okay.

Go.

( speaking Farsi )

( yells in Farsi )

Okay, come on!

Colonel! Over here!

Gunny!

Go, go!
I got your six!

( yelling in Farsi )

( yelling in Farsi )

( gunfire continues )

Let's go!

Go, go, go!

( men yelling )

Gunny, let's go!
Let's go!

Come on, Gunny!
