[Ali] Hey, Iz.

[Izzy] Hi, Mum!

[Ali] Come on, we've got a koala
that needs some help.

What's wrong with her?

[Ali] I don't know, love.
I don't know any more about it.

Come on.
We can't be hanging around. Pop in.

[Ali] Okay. Quick! Quick! Quick!
Let's go, let's go, let's go!

[Izzy] Aw!

Hello.

Hello, koala.

It's okay.

[Izzy] You're safe now
that you're with us.

[Izzy] We're at the koala hospital.

She smells like smoke.

Charcoal.

[Ali] Is it charcoal?
Yeah, that's what I think is on her face.

[Izzy] That means that she's been
in the fire area.

She has.

[Izzy] Australia is
hotter and drier than ever,

so we have lots more bushfires.

When koalas get scared,

they climb higher into the trees
and get trapped up there,

like this little one.

[Izzy] I feel sad for this koala.

Yeah. Because she's in pretty big trouble
at the moment.

You're in the best hands.

I'm just giving her
that little bit of sedation.

Sleeping stuff.

[Ali] Yeah, but it stops her feeling
stressed and frightened.

It's okay.
You're just slowly getting some medicine.

It'll help relax you.

[Ali] Well, I think she's pretty sleepy.
Come on. Let's get her treated.

[Ali] All right, sweetie, all right.

I'm feeling that she's really skinny.

Her lungs don't sound very good.

I think the smoke
might've got into her lungs.

[Izzy] Her eyes look really sore.

[Ali] She's burnt her nose,
mouth, and eyes.

She seems really dehydrated.
That means she needs water.

I bet you're really thirsty.

[Izzy] We're just gonna give you
some fluid.

[Ali] Not too tight.
Just press it down onto her skin.

That's it, and then wrap it around.

Beautiful, well done.

It's all right.

I'll make a bed for you in here,

so when you wake up,
you'll be nice and comfortable.

I'm making it feel like she's at home.

So, this can be the soft dirt, the water.

She can go for a swim.

The sand.

Picnic blanket.

Big, pink cuddly thing.

[Ali whispers] Thanks, baby girl.

[Izzy] She's as cozy as can be.

Feel better.
I'll check on you in the morning.

[birds cawing]

Good morning, Chompy. How did you sleep?

[Izzy chuckles]

We got a new rescue in last night.

We're pretty sure
that she was lost in the fires.

It must have been scary out there for her.

I'm glad you weren't out there, Chompy.

I hope she slept well
and she's feeling better today.

Morning!

Oh my goodness.

-[Tim] Yeah.
-[Ali] Look at you!

Hello.

[door closes]

Doesn't she look good?

[Izzy] She's really cute.

[Tim] You gonna think of a name, Iz?

Uh...

She must've been really scared,
but she still survived the fires.

[Izzy] She is one brave koala.

I think we should name her Flame...

because she's so strong and powerful
and she survived the fires.

A name like that would suit her.

Do you like the name Flame, Flame?

[Tim and Izzy chuckle]

It's a really good sign
if we see her eating.

It's the best sign,
'cause she was pretty thin, wasn't she?

And also dehydrated, so she's got to eat.

[Ali] Leaf provides
both her food and her water.

Wait, Mum. I have the best idea.

This is a special tree

because this type of eucalyptus
has lots of moisture and water.

This tree has gotten so many koalas
to eat and feel better.

That's why we call it the magic tree.

The leaf is really juicy.

It smells sweet almost.

And they're crispy.
They kind of remind me of an apple.

Flame has to start eating
if she wants to get better.

I'm hoping that this leaf
will do the trick.

[Izzy] Here you go, Flame.

I have some leaf from the magic tree.

Maybe once you start eating it,
we can move you into a bigger enclosure.

[Izzy] Please eat.

[Izzy] I feel really bad knowing
that she's been in the fire.

She lost her home

and she's just really stressed out.

I'm thinking of maybe going to scout out
where she was rescued

and see if there's any other wildlife
that needs any help.

Oh, that's a good idea.

Great idea, Iz.

I'll check on you as soon as I'm back.

[Tim and Izzy chuckle]

[Izzy] This is where Flame was rescued.

I'm gonna go check if there's any animals
that also need help.

[Izzy] Everything is burnt.

I see a lot of charcoal.

A lot of burnt trees.

[Izzy] Climate change
is making Australia hotter and drier.

It's been a long time
since we've had a good rain,

and when there's no moisture or water,

that's how fires start,

which is really dangerous
for animals and humans.

This is a eucalyptus tree.
This is where koalas live.

Maybe this is the tree
that Flame was rescued on.

I just touched this
and all this charcoal stuff comes up.

This is the kind of stuff
that I was picking out of her fur.

[Izzy] Charcoal?

[Ali] Is it charcoal?
Yeah, that's what I think is on her face.

All this little flaky stuff

and charcoal got in her eyes
and in her nose.

Bushfires are really bad for animals

because they could get hurt really easily

and they lose their homes.

There's no food or water.

Everything is burnt.

I'm super happy Flame
came into the koala hospital,

'cause otherwise
she wouldn't have survived.

I don't see any koalas.

If I don't find wildlife, that means
they've already found another home

and they're nice and safe.

[Izzy] It's an echidna hole!

[Izzy] Echidnas are sometimes called
spiny anteaters.

They like to burrow underground
to hide and stay cool.

[Izzy] Is anybody home?

There's no one home. That's good.

The hole is empty.

That means that this little echidna's
found another spot to live.

I'm looking for some footprints,

maybe some fur.

It's poop!

I found a poop! It's koala poop!

It's very old, though.

It's really dry and it's just black.

Okay, I'm gonna keep looking.

Oh, there's a baby plant there.

That means this tree has survived.

But it's still fighting.
That's a good sign.

Here you go, little one.

Keep fighting.

[Izzy] This tree has survived the fire,
just like Flame.

That makes me think
that other animals may have also survived.

[Izzy] Hi, guys! I'm glad you're safe!

[Izzy] Wow! There's a wallaby!

I'm glad you're staying cool
and that you're away from all the fires.

[Izzy] Your baby's so cute.

[Izzy] Look! There's a koala.

And there's a baby!

Aw!

Pretty cute.

[Izzy chuckles] Aw!

I'm glad you weren't stuck
in the burned area.

Enjoy that nice juicy leaf. Bye!

[Izzy] I'm so glad
no other animals needed my help.

Now I can make sure Flame starts eating

and gets back to being a healthy koala.

Hey, Flame!

[Izzy] Flame, you haven't eaten
any of your leaf.

You need it to rehydrate
and grow stronger.

Come on, Flame. You have to eat.

Can you please eat some leaf?

Got some nice leaf for you.

You want some leaf?

It's okay.

[Izzy laughs]

Good job!
You're really chompin' away.

I'm so glad you're eating.

I'm so proud of you.

[Izzy] This is a big deal
that she's eating

because it means she's recovering well.

She's bouncing back. Pretty cool.

[Izzy] You can hold my hand.

It's a big deal that you're eating.

That means you're ready to move outside.

-Dad!
-[Tim] Yeah?

I need your help to move Flame
into a bigger enclosure!

[Tim] Hi, guys.

[Izzy] Hi, Dad.

-[Tim] Do you think she's ready?
-Yeah.

I saw her eating
and she just looks so much livelier.

[Tim] And she's feeling
a lot better, isn't she?

[Izzy] Yeah. I reckon she's gonna love it.

Okay, Flame. Are you ready to move?

[Tim] Let's get you over...

-[Flame whines]
-[Izzy] It's all right.

There we go.

Good girl, Flame.

[Izzy] The hard part's over.

And now we just got to carry you
to your enclosure.

I'll cover you up from the sun.

-[grunts] You're carrying her.
-[Tim chuckles]

[Izzy] Don't be scared, Flame.

I'll be with you the whole way.

You're gonna love it, Flame!

Okay, Flame.

[Izzy] Want to climb in the tree?

[Tim] There we go.

There you go.

[Izzy] Welcome to your new home, Flame.

You'll be able to recover
even faster in here.

[Izzy] I can just imagine her freaking out
in the smoke and ash.

For all that you've been through,
I'm really proud of you, Flame.

I reckon we should leave her
in peace, Dad.

-Yeah.
-Enjoy your new enclosure.

[Izzy] I'm happy we could help you,
little koala.

In this episode, you saw me
and my family helping wild animals.
