[Izzy] Come on, Chompy.

-[munching]
-Morning, Mum.

-Morning, baby. How are you?
-Good.

-Hello, gorgeous boy.
-[chuckles]

Morning.

Gosh, his eyes are looking so good now,
aren't they?

-Yeah.
-Look at the size of his head!

I know. He's got a big head.

[laughs]

He's really trusting you now, isn't he?

He is very happy.

You've done a great job with him, Iz.
Well done.

Thank you.

-[pop]
-Good boy.

-You know what we should do?
-What?

-We should weigh him today.
-Oh, yeah!

-Yeah, that'd be a good idea.
-Yeah?

[Ali] Every baby koala that we have
in care takes three big steps.

First, they have to learn to drink milk.

Then, when they're strong enough
and can climb,

they move out of the house
into their own enclosure.

Lastly, when they've learned everything we
can teach them,

and they're healthy, big, and brave,
they're released back into the wild.

The way that we determine if they're
big enough to move out of the house

and eventually back into the wild
is to weigh them.

[Izzy] Yeah.

-I'll take him.
-Mm-hm.

-Do you want to go and get the scales?
-Sure.

Come here!

Good morning, StormBoy.

[thunder crashing]

-You ready, Mum?
-Yep.

So, he needs to be over five pounds

before he can go outside
into a bigger enclosure.

2.3 kilos.

That's about four and a half pounds.

[Ali] Look at you, big man.

A half a pound away from being able to go
out into the big-boy enclosure.

You just have a little more weight
to put on.

And a few things to learn.

-So, now we've weighed this boy...
-Mm-hm.

You know who else we've gotta weigh today?

Leia.

[Ali] Yes...

If she's above eight pounds, then...

That means she might be able
to be released into the wild.

But only if I think she's ready.

Good morning, Leia.

It's time to weigh you.

If you're over eight pounds,

that means you'll be ready to be released.

Are you jumping away from me?

It's okay, Leia.

Don't be scared. I'm here.

If you're ready to go back into the wild,
it'll be hard,

but it's what's best for you.

I promise.

[Ali] Leia's been with us
for over a year now,

and Izzy's really been Leia's mum
all the way through.

It's all right.

[Ali] So, if Leia's ready to go,

this is gonna be a really difficult
release for both of them.

You can do this.

-What's happenin'?
-She's a little bit scared.

-What are we gonna do?
-Are you gonna come down?

It's nothing scary, Leia,
we're just trying to weigh you.

-Come on, sweetheart.
-You can do this, Leia.

Good girl. Here. Climb on me.

I've got you.

Good girl, Leia.

That's it.

-Well, I got her down.
-Well done.

Good girl, Leia.

[bubbling sounds]

All right, you've done this before.
There's nothing to be scared of.

You ready, Leia?

-Go to the scales.
-Yeah. Come on the scales. Oh!

[Ali] I know. We know.

[Izzy] She weighs...

over nine pounds.

-Past the target weight.
-Yeah.

-I think she's ready to go.
-Yeah.

But Leia's my special one.

And, as Leia's best friend,
I need to make sure that she's ready.

Yes. I know. I would expect nothing less.

[Izzy] I'm gonna prepare these tests
for her, and if Leia passes every test,

I think she's ready for release.

Test number one.
Always pick the juiciest of leaf.

It's really important that the leaf
that they eat is really juicy.

That means that it has lots of moisture
for the koalas when they eat the leaf.

Look! It's a gecko.

Aah!

Are you comfy there?

Hi, Leia.

All right, Leia.
Time for test number one.

I need to make sure that you can
always choose the juiciest leaf.

Otherwise, you could get thirsty
or dehydrated.

All right, Leia.

Are you ready?

We'll start over here.

It's not only eucalyptus that's gonna be
out in the wild,

so always make sure you smell it
before you eat it.

[sniffing]

Oh, that's a no.

Good. You should never eat flowers.

Now, this leaf, Leia.

Australia is in a drought at the moment,
and everywhere's really dry.

[sniffing]

No? How about this leaf?

[sniffing]

Oh! Good girl, Leia.

I'm so proud of you.
You passed the first test.

[laughs]

I'm almost convinced that you're ready
to go back into the wild.

But, I need to make sure
that you're strong enough.

Whoa.

Don't be scared, Leia.

I'm not gonna release you
until I know you're prepared.

'Cause you're my best friend,
and this is what best friends do.

They look out for each other.

And I'll always be here.

All right, Leia. You're just about ready.

I have one more test,
to see if you're strong enough.

But first, you need to get off me.

[laughs]

-Okay, Iz. What do you reckon? This do?
-Perfect.

Okay, let's go.

[Izzy laughing]

Okay, let's get this rope off you.

-Yup.
-Hands up.

Faster. Faster. Come on,
we gotta get this rope off you.

-Faster. Faster! Faster!
-[laughs]

Hey! We did it!

Yeah!

[Izzy] Hi, Leia.

Time for test number two.

Dad and I are putting up rope
so we can test your strength.

When Leia gets back to the wild,

she'll need strong arms and legs
to jump on trees,

and really good balance
to reach heaps of juicy leaf.

All right, Leia.
Dad and I have got to get to work.

-How do you think we should do this, Izzy?
-We can grab the rope

and we can tie it up there...

and then drape it across
to the other side of the enclosure.

-Like that?
-Yeah, that's good.

Leia, you have two thumbs on each hand,

and really strong arms to pull up with,

and you can jump with your back legs.

-[laughs]
-[Dad] Yeah!

I only have one thumb on either hand.

So, if I can climb this,
you can climb this, Leia.

[Dad] I got ya.

[giggles]

-What do you think?
-Mm-hm.

I can't move, but I can hang.

-[laughs]
-You wanna give it a try?

[sniffing]

Yes, Leia.

[sniffing]

This is exactly the idea.

You can do it.

I know you're strong enough.

Don't be scared, Leia.

You can do this.

It's okay, Leia.
That was a really good try.

You don't need to be scared.

You have to show me how strong you are.

It's the only way
I'll be comfortable releasing you.

I promise you're a way better climber
than I am.

Wait, I have an idea.

These trail cameras will turn on
when they see movement.

If Leia's moving and I'm not here,
it'll record.

Like most koalas,
Leia's most adventurous at night,

while I'm still asleep.

All right, Dad. That looks good.

Hopefully, she'll climb the ropes
when I'm not here

and we can catch her on camera.

Cuddles before bed.

-[Dad] Aw, big cuddles.
-[chuckles]

[Izzy] Good night, Leia.
I really hope you climb those ropes.

[snoring]

[Izzy] It's time to check the trail cam.

Good morning, Leia.

-Hi, Mum.
-Hey. What you got?

I set up trail cameras last night
in Leia's enclosure,

-to see if she'd climb the ropes.
-That was a good idea.

-Yeah. Wanna see?
-Can I have a look? Yeah.

Let's have a look.

If Leia hasn't climbed these ropes,

I'm not gonna be comfortable
releasing her.

So, this is the first video.

At night time. This is cool.

She seems to just be sitting on the tree.

Come on, Leia.

Oh, no. She hasn't climbed yet.

[Ali] She's investigating it, isn't she?

Mm!

-[Ali] Oh! Oh, no.
-Oh, she's grabbing the ropes. Look.

-[Ali] Oh... Oh!
-[rustling]

-[Izzy] You got it, Leia.
-[Ali] Look at her.

[Izzy laughs]

-Oh, look, she's on the ropes.
-Oh! Oh, yes!

[both laughing]

-She's hanging up. Oh!
-Oh, my word.

-Look at her go!
-[Izzy laughs] Good job, Leia.

There she goes, climbing back down.

That's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

So...

Well, she passed my tests.

She can pick the right leaf,
and she's strong.

Well, you've taught her everything
that she needs to know.

Very brave little koala, that one.

-Yeah.
-Well done. Good job, Mama!

I feel really happy and excited.

-All right. Go and tell her the good news.
-Okay.

-Excellent. Let me know how you go.
-Yup!

Hey, Leia!

I just watched your footage with Mum
and I saw you!

You were swinging on those ropes!

You looked like a monkey.

That gives me no doubt
that you'll be able

to climb and get leaf out in the wild.

You're going home.

Oh! Oh.

I love you, too, Leia.

But don't worry,
I'll be here the whole time.

I'm so proud of you, Leia.

[laughs]

In this episode, you saw me
and my family helping wild animals.

If you see an animal
that you think might be sick or injured,

don't approach it, tell an adult and
ask them to call a trained professional.
