[Izzy] Guess what?
A new baby koala came in last night.
His name is Chompy.
Okay, over you go, little boy.
Oh! Sorry, you can take your leaf, baby.
Don't worry.
[laughs]
So, Chompy got his name
because he came in,
and all we could hear was just Chompy
just chomping away going...
[munches]
Good boy, Chompy.
[chuckles] He just waved.
He was found without a mum.
And he had really sore eyes
because he ran into some green ants.
It was really important
that he came in to get some help.
It's really good
that he's eating a lot of leaf,
but it would be better
if he could drink some milk as well,
it's really important
for Chompy to grow stronger.
[Ali] The milk will give him the extra
ingredients that he needs to grow.
But if we can't get him to drink milk,
we could be in big trouble here.
All right, I'll get that milk.
[Izzy] In the wild, baby koalas
get their milk from their mums.
At the koala hospital,
we use a special milk made just
for wildlife like koalas.
[Ali] We'll wrap him like a little burrito
to keep his little hands still.
Just wanna try and keep him
-as still as possible.
-No, your little arms can't come out.
-[Ali] Oh!
-[Izzy] Chompy!
Let's come up here, that's it.
-Got you. Hold him there.
-That's it.
-Come on.
-Come on. It's okay, Chompy.
Milk is really important.
-[Ali] Sh, sh, sh, sh.
-[Izzy] You can trust me.
I'm really worried
that Chompy isn't drinking his milk,
but I guess he doesn't know
we're trying to help him.
[Ali] So, what do you think we could do
to make things a bit easier for him?
Any ideas?
Well, I think once he gets to trust us,
we'll be able to start feeding him.
Yeah.
Seeing as though Chompy
doesn't have a mum now,
-that means I have to be his foster mum.
-That's true.
So, maybe I can see
how the mum koalas treat the babies.
Maybe just watch them
for a bit in the wild
and then I can come back
-and try to do the same with Chompy.
-[Ali] Yeah.
-Be Chompy's mum.
-I think that's a great idea.
What do you think, Chompy?
[pop]
-Oh, I think he likes that.
-[chuckles]
My friend Nick from class,
he lives near a place where
there are lots of mum and baby koalas.
It would be the perfect place
to spot some in the wild.
-It's a good idea. yeah.
-Yeah.
I'm gonna go learn how to be a mum.
For koalas.
Goodbye, Chompy.
-Hi, Nick!
-Hi, Izzy.
Let's see if we can find a mum
and baby koala out here.
Look, claw marks.
That means there could be
-more koalas around this area.
-More koalas. Yeah.
-[birdsong]
-Do you see a koala?
Wait.
-Where?
-I found a koala.
[Nick gasps] Oh, my God!
[Izzy whispers] Walk very quietly.
-Sh! Sh, sh, sh.
-Do they have good hearing?
Yes. Smelling and hearing
are their main senses.
Hello.
Hi!
Hello, little guy.
-Big guy, I mean.
-[chuckles]
Oh. Goodbye!
That's definitely a male koala,
because it has a very big nose.
It has, like,
a really pointy-ish face
compared to the girls,
because they're, like, more flat.
Should we see if there's any more koalas
around here?
Let's go, then.
-Bye.
-Bye-bye.
A boy koala is great to see,
but I need to find a mum and baby,
so I can get some ideas on how
to get Chompy to drink his milk.
[bicycle bell rings]
[Nick chuckles]
[birds squawking]
Oh! I found a koala! And it has a baby!
[Nick] Oh, my God, it's so cute!
Oh, my gosh, oh, my gosh! It's so...
This is the expert.
I need to to learn from the expert.
The mum's just letting the baby climb
everywhere, all over her,
and the mum's
just sitting there cuddling the baby.
I reckon the baby feels the warmth
from his mum.
And the baby can hear the mum's heartbeat.
So the babies feel nice
and comfortable and supported.
Okay.
I feel safe when I get cuddles
from my parents.
Maybe I can do the same with Chompy.
If he feels safe and comfortable,
then that'll help him trust us,
-and then he'll be able to drink his milk.
-That'll be good.
I know what I'm gonna do.
I'm going to give Chompy as much love
and attention
as this mum's doing to her baby.
[munching]
Mums and babies eat in the wild together,
so I'm gonna do the same thing with you.
The mums do everything
with the baby koalas.
I'm gonna keep you close
so you can hear my heartbeat
just like you would with Mum.
Can you hear my heartbeat, Chompy?
[heartbeat]
Chompy, are you comfortable?
Chompy, are you starting to trust me yet?
Chompy, let's have a chomping contest.
Are you ready?

I think you won, Chompy.

Nice and comfy.
Hopefully this means you're starting
to trust me.
It seems like it's working.
All right, Chompy.
I'm gonna go set up your bed
so you can sleep beside me.
It's really important
to make a comfortable home
so that Chompy feels comfortable
and safe.
It's a 24-hour job taking care of Chompy.
I'll be sleeping right next
to him just in case he needs any cuddles.
Just like a mum koala actually does
with her baby.
There we go.
