[birdsong]

[Izzy] I live with my family
up on Magnetic Island.

That's in Australia.

There are so many koalas living here.

Good morning!

It's a koala paradise.

Most of the island is a national park.
So all our koalas and animals live free.

But that doesn't mean that they don't
need our help from time to time.

I'm Izzy Bee.
My family and I rescue koalas.

My mum's a wildlife doctor.

-How is Juliet doing, Mum?
-I think she's doing really well, Iz.

We help sick koalas get better.

Let's have a listen to her heart.

When the koalas are ready, we release them
back into the wild where they belong.

[Izzy] You're home!

Right now,
we have five koalas living with us.

Good morning, Cinderella!

Good morning, Juliet.

Good morning, StormBoy.

Hi, Mango!

Hi, Leia, my favorite.

[tinkling sound]

Oop!

Careful there, Leia.

Aw, Leia!
Do you need cuddles this morning?

I think this is the best part
of Leia's day, getting cuddles.

Best part of my day, too.
Get cuddles from Leia.

Leia first came in about a year ago.

And she was like
this tiny little fluffball.

[Izzy's mother] Her mum just disappeared
and little Leia was left by herself.

She was so small and she was so sad,

but that's where Izzy's magic comes in.

She cuddled her, she calmed her.

[Izzy] I would have been scared if I was
that small without my mum, alone.

When Leia came in,

I couldn't even put her on the ground
without her running back up to me.

[laughs]

Leia had big ears that looked like buns,
so we called her Princess Leia.

Leia was strong and very brave.

[Izzy's mother] I think it's a pretty
magical bond that they've got.

[Izzy] Leia's probably, like,
one of my best friends.

Come on. Come on!

[laughing] Oh, Leia!
She's not gonna let go.

I've gotta go.

Fine, two more minutes.
And then I have to go, Leia.

I have to feed everybody.
Sometimes you've gotta share me, too.

She just held on to me tighter.

Come on.

Come on. There you go.

Good girl. No, no, no, no, no, no.

I'll be right back, okay?
No, please, no.

Leia, Leia, Leia... Come on.

Bye, Leia. I love you.

-Bye!
-[pop]

Every morning, I bring
fresh eucalyptus leaf to the koalas.

Here you go, Juliet.

It's all they eat for food.

Here you go, Cinderella.

Here's some leaf, Mango.

[birds calling]

[squawks]

People on the island know
that we're the koala experts.

So if a koala does need help,
they come to us.

[bell rings]

Mum, there's somebody at the gate.

-[mother] Hey, Linda.
-Hi, Allison. It was in the apartments.

[Ali] What were you doing
in the apartments?

You sound like you've got yourself lost.

All right, we'll take her
into the clinic. Everybody in.

You're at the koala hospital.

-It's okay, you're nice and safe.
-[Ali] You're not very old, are you?

[Izzy] She's got big ears.
She looks like Leia.

-All right, shall we?
-Come on. Look, I'll take your leaf.

[Ali] I know, I know...

Hey, look. Leaf. Leaf is there.

-Nobody's taking your food away from you.
-[Izzy] Leaf!

[Ali] Hey, hey. Settle, petal.
I know you're scared.

It's okay. We'll take care of you.

[Ali] Beautiful. Good girl.

[sniffing]

I think she's got herself lost.
Let's have a look.

[Izzy] Koalas live in the trees.

If they are on the ground for a long time,
that usually means that something's wrong.

[Ali] Have a listen to her chest.

[heartbeat]

Her chest sounds pretty good.

[Izzy] And her eyes are really healthy.

And for the grand finale,
let's check your poop.

You can learn a lot
from looking at their poop.

Like if they've had enough water or not.

They look dry.

[Ali] If it's dry, that would show
that she's probably not got enough water.

It's been quite hot the last few days.

I think she's probably trying to find
juicy leaves with plenty of moisture

and she just
got herself a little bit lost.

[Izzy] Koalas get most of their water
from leaves.

This time of year, the leaves all dry out,

and so koalas actually have to come down
and look for juicy leaf.

That's when it starts getting dangerous,
though, because they can become lost.

What do you think she can be called?
She's very pretty.

This is really random,
but she really suits the color red.

-Could call her Rosie.
-Yeah, Rosie.

We're just gonna watch you,
you can sleep and we'll feed you.

-How does that sound?
-[Ali] I think that's a great plan.

Who do you think she'd suit to go in with?

-Who'd be a good roommate?
-Leia.

But she might be a bit annoyed
that someone's in her palace.

Look, Leia, it's okay.
You've got a friend.

Look, she has big ears like you.

It's okay, Rosie's only gonna be in here
for one night.

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

Come on, girls. Now, play nicely.

Play nice.

Hey, Little Miss Jealous.
Where are you going, Leia?

Rosie, this is Leia. Leia, this is Rosie.

Now, you're gonna play nicely
and be friends.

Good girl, Leia, it's okay.

Oh, she's coming down.

Leia, do you like sharing?

She pulls the leaf closer.

[laughs]

Rosie, I'm going to go
all around the island

to find you a new home
with lots of fresh leaves, okay?

[pop]

And good night, Leia.
You be nice to Rosie.

-Good girl. Well done.
-Okay.

[Ali] Good koala-handling skills.

Good morning. Hi, Leia. Hi, Rosie.

Did you guys sleep well?

Hey, Rosie.

[snoring]

Rosie, are you gonna wake up
this morning?

Usually koalas sleep 18 to 20 hours
a day, so this is pretty normal.

Rosie, I'm going to find you a new home
with lots of fresh leaves.

And whichever leaf is
your absolute favorite,

maybe that's where I can release you.

Goodbye, Leia.
I'll get some leaf for you, as well.

I have to make sure Rosie
really likes the food in her new home.

Otherwise, she might wander around
and get lost again.

There are three places on the island that
have really good leaf.

-[bicycle bell rings]
-Bye, Rosie! Bye, Leia!

First up, Wallaby Way.

[bicycle bell rings]

This is perfect leaf.

Koalas eat 40 different types
of eucalyptus.

But for Leia, there's only maybe two.

Leia's very fussy,
but she likes the leaf from here.

So maybe Rosie will like it, too.

Off to the beach.

[children shouting]

-Hi, Dad!
-Hi, Iz!

Hello.

Off to the school.

There's a lot of koalas around here.

It'd be kind of cool
if I released Rosie here,

because then I would be able
to check on her

at lunch during school.

One more.

Got it!

Time to head home to Rosie
to see what leaf she likes best.

Hi, Rosie. Hi, Leia. I'm back.

Rosie can taste each one
and pick her favorite.

This first one's from Wallaby Way,
where Leia was rescued.

Don't worry, Leia.
I'll give you some in a minute.

-[sniffing]
-Koalas can tell what leaves are best

and have the most moisture
by just smelling them.

[sniffs]

I think that's a no.

[buzzer sounds]

Let's try another one.

-[wave surges]
-The beach.

You wanna try this one?

[sniffing]

-[buzzer sounds]
-I think that's another no.

-Let's try the school.
-[horn beeps]

-This is the last leaf I have, Rosie.
-[sniffs]

I hope you like it.

She took it!

I think you've chosen your spot, Rosie.
You're gonna go to the school.

[fireworks whizzing]

I'm gonna get everything we need
to prepare for Rosie's release.

Leia, did you come to see me?

You gotta move, though, because
we don't want you running out the door.

You're not getting released yet.

Leia, it's Rosie Day today.

I have to prep all this stuff.

And you can learn what it's gonna be like
for when you get released.

-Hi, Mum.
-Hey.

-How you going?
-Good.

I think it's been really good having Rosie
here because she taught Leia a few things.

-What do you think she taught her?
-Maybe how to share?

Yeah. Yes, I think that's a lesson
that Leia should learn.

[Izzy] Come on, Rosie, let's go.

[Ali] We only treat them
for as long as we need to,

so they can be released
back out to the wild.

That's their proper home.

All right,
it's time to paint Rosie's bum.

We have to paint her bum
with a special animal paint

so that when she's released back
into the wild,

we can track where she goes,

and then we can see her
when she's high up the tree.

There we go.

Gosh, she's a heavy little koala.

[Ali] Let's go.

It's okay, Rosie. We're just bringing you
to your new home, at my school.

You liked the leaf from there,
so I reckon you'll love it out there.

Up here looks good.

It's okay, Rosie. We're almost here.

[Ali] Which one do you reckon, though?

She can run up any one she likes.

It's her choice.

-Hello, it's okay, baby.
-We'll just pick you up and put you out.

There you go.

Go up any tree you want.

Good girl!

[Ali] Oh!

-[laughs]
-Good girl.

I didn't know you were such a show-off.

-Ooh!
-[Ali] Oh, my goodness.

That was pretty awesome.

-Bye, Rosie.
-That's all right.

Good luck. I'll check on you on Monday
when I'm back at school.

Good job.

Bye, Rosie! Enjoy your new home!

[pop]

Hi, Leia! [chuckles]

I think Leia's pretty comfy.

Queen Leia. [laughs]

She's upgraded from Princess Leia
to Queen Leia now.

[laughs]

Look! I got you some leaf.

I promise I'll get you big enough
and strong enough

to be released back into the wild.

I'll miss you when you get released.

Have a good sleep, Leia,
now that you've got your own palace back.

I'll visit you first thing
tomorrow morning.

In this episode, you saw me and my family
helping wild animals.

If you see an animal that you think
might be sick or injured,

don't approach it, tell an adult and ask
them to call a trained professional.
