Interior Design Masters (2019–…): Season 1, Episode 8 - Episode #1.8 - full transcript
The final two contestants battle it out to win the contract to redesign a top London hotel. They are each given an open-plan apartment to redesign and have to work with the owners to make it a home for them.
[upbeat bass guitar]
Who doesn't love interior design?
But, what if you wanted
to turn that passion
into a full-time career?
[Fearne] From across the UK,
these ten everyday people
with dreams to become designers
are looking for a big life change.
It's going up!
Hoping to make a name for themselves
in the ruthless world
of professional design.
They're competing to win
a major career-defining contract
to design the grand historic bar
at one of London's top hotels.
Yeah, let's do it!
Over the last eight weeks,
they've transformed shops...
Oh, I like this.
They've put lino on the walls, isn't it?
-Yeah.
-That's a good idea.
...holiday cabins...
Oh, wow.
Making me slightly worried about ours.
...and hair salons.
I love it.
[Ju]I love that light there,
with the jelly beans.
And, they've impressed
some big industry names
along the way.
I would come in here and think,
"This is a craft shop
that knows its stuff." It's fun.
It's got some maturity,
it's got some depth.
...and it looks like
the cover of a magazine.
She's brought in that sense of history,
but she's actually done it
in a way that's quite contemporary.
Yeah. I mean, wow. Strong.
But, now only two designers remain,
as they face
the biggest opportunity of their lives.
I don't think it's sunk in at all
that I'm in the final,
but to win would be...
God, to win would be great.
I am going to give this my all,
and I am determined now,
especially as I'm against Cassie,
to win.
We're not just
giving them a bit of crystal,
it's a very serious contract,
and it's the kind of contract
that will launch someone's career.
Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
[upbeat electronic music]
[Fearne] It's the final week
at Michelle's design studio.
Having survived seven
tough commercial projects,
the ultimate brief awaits.
[Fearne] Frank and Cassie.
-[Frank] Hello.
-[Fearne] Oh, my goodness.
This is it, this is the final!
I know, I can't believe it. This is crazy.
It's safe to say that you guys
have had a colourfull relationship
throughout this experience.
Is there some nice, healthy
rivalry present for the final?
-Yeah, definitely.
-Yeah.
-We both want to win...
-Yeah.
...but we have got this
genuine love for each other.
Well, I am wishing you
all the love and luck
for this final.
I'm so excited to see what you do.
Let's see Michelle. We're going to
find out about the challenge,
and she's also got some
wise words of advice for you both.
Thanks.
[Fearne] I present to you, Michelle,
our finalists.
-[Michelle]Our final two!
-[Cassie] Hi, Michelle.
[Michelle] Welcome.
Now, as you know, there's a big prize
at the end of this competition,
so this next challenge
is really about seeing
who's got what it takes
to deliver a high-value contract
to a big client.
We are headed to Royal Mills
in Manchester.
[energetic rock music]
[tram bell rings]
[Fearne] In the north of England
lies a 200-year-old former cotton mill
that's been converted into
upmarket open-plan living.
Taking on a two-bed apartment each,
the finalists have their work cut out
to turn these large blank spaces
into inspirational homes,
to include kitchen,
dining and living zones.
We're at that point now
when an amazing career opportunity
is right there at your fingertips,
and if I could offer you both
just one last bit of advice,
it would be...
remember that this is the client's home
and not your own,
and also to really
immerse yourself in the space,
and make sure it works
from all perspectives.
Good luck.
-Thank you so much.
-Come on!
[Fearne] The winner
of this final challenge
will be presented with
a huge commercial contract
at a top London hotel.
Before making a start
on their design plans,
the finalists are visiting the apartments
and meeting the owners
to discuss the brief.
Jo?
-[Jo] Hello.
-Nice to meet you.
With so much at stake,
getting to know their client is critical.
From reading your brief,
-I know that there's this Scandi theme.
-Yes.
So, I love the Scandi design,
[Frank] Yep.
but I don't like
the extreme sparseness of it.
[Frank] Okay.
So you want it to feel warm and welcoming.
I do. I want it to feel like a home,
a family home.
I think the biggest challenge with Jo
is that, one, I don't think she's
the most aesthetic-driven person,
and two, because I want to
push this really hard,
because it is the final,
I'm scared of pushing it too hard
that she might think
it's just way too trendy for her.
My big redesign
is that I plan to build
a huge built-in storage unit
that goes all round
from that area of the room
right round to these kitchen cupboards.
It basically is a huge window seat.
-My husband is an obsessive reader,
-[quizzical music plays]
so it might be a nice spot
for him to read.
-Love it.
-Okay!
Oh, that's good. That's a good reaction.
Ultimately, it's the final,
so I'm just going to go all out
to impress Michelle
and the guest judges.
[Fearne] Assisting Michelle
in her final decision
are two highly-esteemed
design industry experts.
Making a welcome return from week one
is fashion designer
turned interiors specialist
Matthew Williamson.
Within this final week,
what I'm really looking for
is a sense of these designers' DNA,
and their character,
and how they've really
expressed themselves in these homes.
[Fearne] And, scrutinizing alongside him
is the highly-regarded English consultant
and interior designer Naomi Cleaver.
Design isn't just about prettiness,
about lovely things.
You really need to
get into the head of your client
and create something for them that
they didn't even know that they wanted,
but they do when they see it.
-Hi there!
-Hi.
I'm Cassie, nice to meet you.
[Fearne] Hoping to impress the judges
and create something special
for her clients,
antiques dealer Cassie.
-This is the nursery?
-Yes.
In terms of this room,
it's just really about...
making it a little bit of fun.
I'm feeling really confident about winning
this challenge. It's a great space.
I want to make sure that
when they have their new baby arrive,
they've got the perfect house
and they don't have to worry about
doing anything to it.
It's all going to be done,
and work for them really well.
The one thing I want to speak to you
mostly about is the master bedroom,
because it does...
The word "neutral" gets mentioned.
-[Client] That sort of palette.
-[Cassie] You said kind of boho chic?
Yeah.
And, I was thinking
a terracotta-y kind of colour.
[Client] I trust your judgment
when it comes to colours.
I just want to have an atmosphere.
I just want the atmosphere
when I go into the room to be relaxing
and open and airy.
It's not anything I head in my head.
Yeah.
I'm excited and nervous, really.
I think that some of the ideas are
probably a bit more "out there"
than what I would've...
ever have done.
The rug's antique, right?
-Yeah.
-So that's your style, which I like.
Having a few pieces
that are authentic and original,
it's going to help also
ground this building.
-I feel like we're on the same page.
-Yeah?
-I'm really excited.
-Okay, amazing.
That's awesome.
I think Kim and Casey are really on board
with my designs and ideas.
I don't think there's too much
I have to be careful with,
I'm hoping that I can just give them
something that they may not do themselves.
However, it would be something
that they're really going to love,
and, yeah, that would be the best thing.
[driving electronic music]
It's the day of reckoning
for Cassie and Frank.
[Frank] Well, may the best man win, Cass.
[Fearne] Over the next three days,
they'll have to prove
they've got what it takes
to impress their clients.
Feels a whole lot bigger.
With £6,000 to spend,
the finalists have double the usual budget
as they aim to turn
these tricky open-plan apartments
into prize-winning spaces.
going to look great.
Alongside the usual tradespeople...
[Cassie] So, there's quite a lot to build.
...they've each chosen
a former teammate to help out.
Hello!
Nicki!
Me and Nicki worked so well together
in the knit shop,
and it's so great to have her on board.
Your hair looks lovely.
Oh, thanks!
-Kyle!
-Hello!
How are you?
Kyle's very, very good at
that kind of practical element.
This is nice.
Welcome to the blank canvas.
Having him on board
to relieve the pressure off me
I think will really help.
[driving electronic music]
[Fearne] Frank's taking a high-end
approach to his apartment,
including bespoke mid-century style
blue and white cabinets in the kitchen,
while in the open-plan living space,
he's creating a drywall
with recessed shelving
along the length of the apartment,
adding a luxury sofa
and new bookshelves.
In the master bedroom,
he's installing an oversize
upholstered headboard,
luxury new curtains,
and soft furnishings
in blue, gray and oyster tones.
Finally, in the guest bedroom,
Frank's trademark use
of pattern and colour
will include a midnight blue headboard,
customized mustard velvet blinds,
and a bold leaf-print wallpaper
on the wall.
We've got this...
-incredible wallpaper...
-Nice.
-...going on every single wall.
-Right.
I do really like what he's come up with.
He's got really good ideas, he's managed
to work with the space really well,
come up with some interesting storage.
I'm a bit concerned whether
the colour scheme might be too much,
but he's in the final,
at the end, so he's got to go for it.
[Fearne] Rival designer Cassie
is aiming to blow away the judges.
So, on the main wall in this room,
the paint colour's
actually called Puppy Love,
and Puppy Love is bringing a lot
to this space at the minute.
[Fearne] And, she's not taking
any chances,
with plans drawn up for every room.
Because, there's only one of me,
and a lot of people have got to know
what's going on inside my head,
I've done loads of drawings for this one.
and just a few bonus mood board pictures,
so that everybody has a good idea
what's going on in each room.
I've never been so prepared for something.
[Fearne] As well as zoning off the kitchen
with a new floor,
Cassie's building an island
as the centerpiece for the room.
She plans to break up
the open-plan living area
by creating some narrow shelving
along the wall of the entire apartment,
is customizing a modular sofa,
and styling the living space
with neutral furnishings.
In the master bedroom,
she's going for boho chic,
with coral pink on the walls and ceiling,
a built-in headboard
and vintage furniture
and fabrics throughout.
Finally, in the nursery,
Cassie's going for a monochrome scheme,
mixing high street flat-pack furniture
for the baby
with an antique day bed
and 70s hanging seat for Mum to enjoy.
So, this is the nursery.
There's so many things they asked for,
and one of the main things was monochrome.
So I'm trying to add in
loads of different things like that
to make sure that it works.
[Nicki] I really love what Cassie's
got planned,
but it is massive space,
so I'm kind of
a small bit glad it's not me.
And, this is obviously
your key final line.
Do you want a wider gap?
I think I prefer this
kind of like deeper.
If it's equal, it looks a bit too neat.
It's supposed to just be
that tiny line on top.
There's so many details, so much to do.
I am nervous about it.
I don't feel like...
everything, you know,
everything's not going to go to plan,
but I don't want to drop anything,
so I just kind of have to
work through it all,
and make it work.
[hip-hop beat]
This is the artwork.
[Fearne] Hoping to wow the judges
in the kitchen...
-So if we can start framing those now.
-Yeah.
...Frank's hanging new
luxury cupboard doors.
[Frank] How are you getting on
with the cupboards?
-[Builder] Getting there.
-[Frank]They look really smart.
Frank!
Hello, how are you?
Who cares about me, how are you?
I'm good.
What do you think Michelle
is looking for at this point, the final?
I think...
Michelle...
wants to see a perfect finish,
it being fit for a commercial contract,
and I think that's why I took this route,
it's going to be a lot more minimalistic,
because I've invested in
some really expensive pieces,
such as the kitchen.
-This is a great colour.
-It's gorgeous, isn't it?
All pre-made off-site,
so the guys just had to
hang the doors, get it on.
It took a good quarter of my budget,
but I think it was worth it.
I just want to get
that level of finish totally right,
so no bodge jobs,
no unfinishing, it needs to look perfect.
[Fearne] But, already halfway through
the first day,
Frank's hit a problem,
as his curtains for the master bedroom
are missing.
Okay, we're just
going round in circles with it,
because it was definitely over £95,
so can you get that
next day delivery on it, then?
We have got a slight issue,
in that the curtains
might not be getting here on time,
which I'm concerned about,
because that...
master bedroom
is the one area where they wanted, like...
curtains rather than romans.
My bespoke curtains,
which were another heavy investment,
because I wanted to do things properly
in this residential space,
they...
basically are delayed,
so Kyle is sorting that one out for me.
But, I'm just slightly concerned
where they are, how to get them here,
and if they're going to be finished.
[upbeat pop music]
[Fearne] Back in Cassie's open-plan
living space...
[Cassie] I think it would be quite nice
if we have one more shelf,
and had the third,
and then the uprights go up.
Hi, Cass!
Hey! How you doing?
Happy final to you!
Thank you so much.
This wall looks like it's going to be
a real focal point
when you walk in the room.
[Cassie] Yeah, I hope so.
I think the wall should be the feature,
but it doesn't have to do too much,
they don't want loads of stuff on it.
And, how much of a vintage feel
will you give it?
Because, obviously,
being the final,
you want to show what you're about,
and we all know what you love.
How much of that
will you inject into this home?
I think what I'll inject,
I've got a few pieces we're making,
a kitchen island,
but, you know, they didn't ask for...
antique, vintage.
They're just going to have
snippets they don't...
expect will turn up.
Do you think they're going to
walk back into their home
and think,
"Yes, I love this. I'm on board with it."
I'm not thinking about that. I'm hoping,
it might not be quite what they expect,
but I think that's a good thing.
The designer coming in,
if they got exactly what they hoped for,
then I don't think I've done my job.
I want a bit more than
what they hoped for.
[Fearne] Showcasing her unique style
in the master bedroom,
Cassie's painting her favorite
terracotta on the walls.
So...
walls, ceiling same colour?
Not this exposed wood.
They asked in here for boho chic.
I want to give them that,
but to do it all with neutral colours
might have been...
quite dull.
[rhythmic guitar music]
[Fearne] It's mid-afternoon.
In the guest bedroom...
So, we have some wallpaper going up.
...Frank's going all out
with a daring design on the walls.
[Frank] I love it!
-[Builder] Good.
-[Frank] Bonkers, isn't it?
But, I think that looks really quite cool.
[Frank] Wallpaper, pattern and colour,
it's not for everybody,
but I don't think Jo's had
anything quite like this
in somewhere that she's lived,
so I'm pushing her boundaries,
and I'm showing her
a different kind of space.
[epic rock music]
[Fearne] With the end
of the first day approaching...
[Nicki & Cassie laughing]
Cassie's on track.
Jo!
[Jo chuckles]]
There's wallpaper!
It looks awesome.
[Fearne] So, she's deciding to visit
her biggest rival.
Hey. How's everything going?
[Frank] Well.
Can we have a look in the living room?
-Yeah, go on.
-Do you want to show us?
Yeah, you can do.
[Nicki] Wow, that's gorgeous!
Is this all your new cabinets?
I'm eager
to hear your feedback on the lights.
-I don't know if I like them.
-No.
[Nicki & Cassie laughing]
With Cassie and me,
it's like, if I say the sky is blue,
she will say it's pink.
If I say the grass is green,
she'll say yellow.
Great. Well, be off. Ta-ta.
We just never agree on anything.
That was...
pretty good to go and see, I think.
I don't feel too worried.
[guitar picking]
[Fearne] Back in Cassie's apartment,
there's an unexpected visit
from the clients,
looking for a sneak preview.
Wow.
What do you think?
[Casey] It's...
-It's...
-Pink.
There's no argument
about how neutral it is.
It's very neutral!
-I don't think it's neutral at all.
-I think it's neutral.
-What?
-They're like earth colours, neutral.
This is exactly what you described.
[Kim laughing]
It's definitely not
what I had in my head, at all.
We've never had colour in the flat,
and that's quite a prominent colour.
It's on the ceiling,
on the skirting boards, on the walls.
So...
is...
-A bit worrying.
-A bit worrying, at the minute.
[tense string plucking music]
[Fearne] It's the second day of the build.
It has dawned on me
that it's the final.
I kind of...
I'm definitely feeling that today.
I just really want it to be good.
I don't want to let myself down.
I don't want the clients to not like it.
And...
I have started thinking about
what Frank's doing.
You know.
Do you think, by half past ten,
that can be up and that can be walloped
and on its first coat
and we can be onto the hallway?
[Fearne] In the next two days,
these apartments must be
finished and ready
for scrutiny by the judges.
I need to see some progress now
because it's...
I feel like we're at a...
-[Kyle] Standstill.
-[Frank] Yeah.
But, Frank's worrying
his ambitious rebuild
has slipped behind schedule.
How long do you think
this is going to take?
Five, six hours?
Yeah.
-Okay, let's get on, then.
-Yeah. Cool.
If you don't start cracking the whip
at this point in the day,
then before you know it,
seven o'clock tonight,
everybody will be panicking,
and it'll be a freak out.
So, I've got to
keep everybody going with it,
else it's not going to get done, is it?
Yeah, I'm really chuffed with this lino.
The colour of it
against the gray and the blue
really works.
Okay, shall we talk kitchen island?
This is the kitchen island?
This is the starting point
of the kitchen island.
In the kitchen,
Cassie's having a shot at upcycling
some old industrial shelves.
So, what I was thinking is,
if we cut this bit down here,
so then the whole thing is now that wide.
-I have got wheels for it,
-Okay.
that was always the plan, but I think
it still needs to be higher than that.
And, in the master bedroom,
she's adding some vintage finds
to her boho design.
And, I've got this
for the end of the bed, as well.
Okay. Oh, wow. Blimey.
As much as I really like that...
This might be the crazy thing.
...this is, you know,
may be the thing that maybe...
-pushes it...
-Yeah, I know what you're saying.
-on the crazy front.
-These colours look lovely.
I might hang this,
or do something else with it,
because I just think
it will fit in here so well.
Could it work as a rug?
Well, you know, there is that,
and it's only ever supposed to be
like something on the back of a chair.
I don't know.
I just think it's so cool.
[Fearne] Halfway through the challenge,
Frank's checking out the opposition.
Cass?
-[Cassie] Hello!
-[Frank] You alright?
Oh, my God!
Oh, my God.
They wanted boho chic.
God, they've defo got it, haven't they?
Bloody hell.
It's very Matthew Williamson.
I hope so.
-I hope he loves it.
-Very Matthew.
I'll be honest,
I just don't like it.
To me, that bedroom
just looks so uncomfortable.
The client has got to live in there,
you know? And...
No.
It's horrid. Horrid.
[uplifting electronic music]
Lunch time on day two,
and Frank's getting back on track.
Cool, so the carpet's arrived.
Shall I take the lino?
You take the others. You'll have to
carry it upstairs, unfortunately.
All of a sudden this afternoon,
I feel quite good about the space.
Carpets have arrived,
carpets are going down.
You can see colours
where they're meant to go.
I'm very happy.
It's going well, and the little...
[chattering from the builders]
That looks smart.
Exactly how I imagined, funny enough.
[Fearne] With only a few hours to go
before the day ends,
Cassie's working against the clock,
making soft furnishings
for the entire apartment.
These are the curtains
for the master bedroom.
So, I've got four of these to do,
and then there's four...
curtains to go up in the living room,
so I've got those to do after.
[Cassie] See if that works.
There was doors there before,
and I just think
curtains are quite a nice way
to make it a bit more homely,
rather than having boarded doors
and things like that.
Yeah, hopefully the curtains look nice.
[Fearne] In Frank's master,
he's also up against it,
trying to make a headboard
with ambitious integrated lighting.
So, we are cutting out the socket holes
so that when it's upholstered
it will be nice and fitted.
Really pray this is going to work.
It could either look really good,
or it could look absolutely shocking.
It looks like a bum hole,
I'm not going to lie.
It just doesn't look right.
So we're changing it.
How easy is it to cut it down now?
[Fearne] But, adapting the headboard
isn't the only late change Frank's facing.
[tense string plucking]
In the kitchen,
his new lino flooring is going down...
[Frank] You what, sorry?
[Builder] It's not big enough.
...but there's a problem.
[Builder] What size did you order?
Did you order a two-by-two?
Let's check.
Off the plans,
and what I've ordered,
it was to cover a 1.8 meter space,
but obviously it's wrong.
We're going to have to get
a whole new piece of lino, right?
So, is anywhere open now?
I can get a piece but I won't
be able to do it till tomorrow.
I'll come first thing in the morning.
-Yeah?
-Cool. That's amazing. Thank you.
No worries.
[Fearne] As the evening draws to a close,
both finalists still have plenty to do.
Tomorrow, they'll have just a few hours
to pull their designs together
before Michelle decides
who will be the winner
of this life-changing prize.
There's still so much to do,
and I just want to make sure
everything is finished as good as it can.
I don't know.
I think that we can feel the pressure now.
[Frank] How are you getting on, guys?
We've got so much to do, overall.
So much to do.
[sawing]
We've got loads to do.
So, can you finish the woodwork
in the next half-an-hour?
I know everyone's
got snagging on their mind,
but I need to get this finished.
I'm not going to have a sleepless night
over it, it is what it is.
I'm just going to work my bum off
in the morning,
try and get it done.
[Dramatic music fades]
[upward rolling synthesizers]
[Fearne] After eight grueling challenges,
for our two finalists,
one last day to impress the judges
before finding out their fate.
Excited to see this lino down.
Once and for all.
-So we've got quite a big to-do list.
-Yeah.
But first, one final push
to present apartments worthy of winning
the ultimate prize,
designing the bar
at one of London's top hotels.
[Cassie] I quite like this one
a little bit more ruffled.
-Do you?
-What do you think?
Just a little bit.
I quite like this end...
Maybe do it a bit like that?
-I think it needs to be a bit more--
-A bit more cazh.
Yeah.
[Fearne] Cassie's working flat out,
adding her own unique styling
to her scheme.
It's upside down.
Just putting on these little brass bits
onto the feet of the sofa.
I think it will be a nice detail
to lift the sofa
and tie it in with
all the other brass pieces,
look a bit more luxurious.
But, arch-rival Frank's only just starting
a key part of his design.
So, these bookshelves
are a very vital part of the brief.
It was going to originally have
way more built-in storage,
but we simplified it,
and they're basically ticks on the wall
which the books can slant inwards,
so they should look quite cool.
[Fearne] And, in the master bedroom,
he's still waiting for
his deluxe curtains.
Kyle?
Apparently the curtains
got here yesterday?
-Do you want me to call him?
-Yeah.
They're meant to be here
and they were delivered 11:30 yesterday,
however there's no sign of them,
so we need to track them down.
Which courier were they sent with?
[driving electronic music]
[Fearne] Both finalists
have less than an hour
before their apartments are revealed
to the judges.
Assisting Michelle are
Naomi Cleaver and Matthew Williamson.
A hugely successful
former fashion designer
famed for his print and colour,
Matthew's now
making a big name for himself
in the world of interiors,
with fabulous fabrics
and striking wallpaper collections.
Highly-regarded British interior designer
Naomi Cleaver
has an impressive portfolio
spanning private residences,
luxury beach houses,
five-star hotels
and high-end apartments.
So, here we are, it's the final.
So, we weren't going to
make it easy for them, were we?
But, there's a big prize on offer
at the end of this,
so we need to know
that they can really deliver
a proper, professional
beautifully-finished job.
It's a huge challenge, but it is...
massively exciting.
I saw them in their
very first stages
on their first properties,
and loved both of the designers' work.
So, it'll be really interesting
to see how the designers have evolved.
[Michelle] Definitely, because that
first challenge was a show home,
so there we were looking for
a broad, mass-market appeal.
But, here we're looking for
a really specific evocation
of these homeowners' character.
Obviously, designing open-plan space
has its own specific challenges,
You don't want this cacophonous...
hole to live in,
you want something
that feels and sounds
-and looks sensual...
-Softened.
...and inviting, and cozy.
And stylish, of course.
Is that the middle? Looks the middle here.
[serious tones]
[Fearne] With time almost up,
final finishing touches
for Frank and Cassie.
-[Cassie] It's pretty nice once you're in.
-[Nicki] It's lovely, yeah.
But, with time running out...
Are those the curtains?
...full-length luxury curtains still
need hanging in the master bedroom.
So basically, they go up
about here,
and then we're going to try and fit
a pelmet to go in above the top.
What do you mean, fit a pelmet?
So, we'll cut to the arc to the ceiling
a piece of MDF,
and then we'll upholster it,
then we'll put it in.
In an hour? And a curve,
and upholstery?
Frank, please,
you could've told me before,
we could've cut the wood.
I didn't even know
they were going to come.
At Cassie's place, it's job done.
Thank you so much.
You're so wonderful.
Win it now. You're going to win it.
[dramatic orchestral hits]
[Fearne] For the judges,
finally a chance to see
which designer has impressed the most.
[epic music]
I totally think
I've done enough to win this.
I've worked so hard,
and I've planned it meticulously.
I've found amazing things...
you know, that will work in there.
I can do commercial spaces. I can...
If I win, I can do that bar.
And I just, you know,
I hope they see that from this.
-[door opening]
-[footsteps on wooden floor]
[Naomi] This is actually really lovely.
-[Michelle] Very happy about that.
-[Naomi] Really nice.
[Naomi] It does feel very balanced,
doesn't it?
[Naomi] Everything sits together well,
which it has to do in an open-plan space.
[Michelle] And, it's great having
the sneaky shelving.
It makes the whole wall useful,
doesn't it?
[Matthew] It's very unexpected,
and clever.
But, the most significant
part of the brief, for me,
is the imminent arrival of this baby,
and where all that stuff is going to go.
[Matthew] There isn't a great deal
of storage.
[Michelle] You've got one cupboard.
[Naomi] Yeah.
And, then this kitchen,
this is a lovely piece.
She's actually fabricated this,
hasn't she?
[Michelle] Which I love,
I think it's all about texture,
but is there enough pattern
and bright colour for you, Matthew?
because you've been quite quiet.
I just feel a little underwhelmed
the more I stand in here.
I think there is lovely detail,
attention to detail,
great pieces bought,
great pieces made.
It's probably the colour for me.
It's quite barren.
Plain chairs, plain sofa,
plain cushions, plain curtains.
The only pattern
in the whole space is this...
floor, really.
[dramatic driving electronic music]
[Naomi] Oh, gosh.
-Matthew!
-Yes!
Colours!
[Matthew] It's a lovely progression
from downstairs, but here,
she's introduced colour, pattern, texture,
it feels really cozy.
There's confidence here. You feel like
she's released herself a bit here.
It also looks timeless to me, as well.
It doesn't feel on-trend right now,
with the colours, the textures.
It feels a bit gypsy, a bit retro,
you know, all those things
that are never going to go out of style.
I like the fact that she hasn't just done
what she's seen in a magazine this month.
It feels unique.
[slow guitar strumming]
-[Naomi] I really like this.
-[Matthew] Me too.
[Michelle] We've got a wonderful
virtuosity here.
I love the fact that all the decor's
dropped to child level.
I think this is wonderful.
I'm imagining Mum's going to be
feeding here, Mum or Dad.
[Matthew] I love that it's not
fell into that cliché of pink
and blue,
but is still really... appropriate.
I tell you a detail that I love,
is that, instead of just
painting up the wall in black,
it's just adding that stripe.
It would be too much,
wouldn't it, if it was just black?
You need that gradation,
because it's such a strong contrast.
But, it does make me think again,
it's like, we know she can do this,
why did she not do this downstairs?
[pumping electronic music]
Great.
Ten minutes!
Ten minutes, people.
[drilling]
Well done, Wayne.
Savior.
[slow bass tones]
It's been a really tough week.
I don't think there's
anything left for me now.
I'm literally exhausted.
But, I feel really good,
and I feel really proud
of what I've achieved.
I think it's a really good job well done.
We've got that kind of adventure wall,
if you like,
but here he's taken it
one step further than Cassie's
by giving it the extra depth.
[Naomi] Looks really lovely.
You've got this storage element
going all the way along,
and then this piece here
then becomes bench seating as well.
It's a very clever way to actually get
a lot of storage in
without imposing on the space too much.
[Naomi] Yeah. I think it probably
could have been more useful.
I recall reading the brief
that he is real bookworm.
Where's the shelving?
I mean, there's a tiny, teen--
-That's...
-Yeah.
That is not the shelving of a bookworm.
No.
There's a huge amount of space there.
What happens in that space?
It's a shame there's not a rug
and a chair and a side table,
-then it would be a mini-library.
-He could've just...
swooshed the sofa back,
added a few more rugs.
But then, quite a radical
transformation in the kitchen.
He's done that age-old
fantastic economical trick
of just changing all the cupboard fronts,
and you instantly get
a completely different look.
This is a nice little detail,
with the walnut,
and resonates with the round
details in the flooring.
Lots of clean lines here, isn't there?
Lots of flat surfaces. Quite...
masculine, almost.
I love the lights behind you, Michelle.
I think they're...
They add bit of drama
and a bit of vintage decadence.
[dramatic piano chords]
[Michelle] Lovely wallpaper.
-Quite impactful.
-Yeah.
It's a really nice wallpaper.
Very energetic.
But, I do think
this is Frank's comfort zone.
He loves his kind of bedrooms.
Here, he shows exactly what he can do,
and I think it's been quite brave
with what he's clashed, and I...
I'm happy to go with it.
I wish he'd have gone even further
and took the gold into the ceiling, and...
put the crazy lights in the lounge
on that wall, and just gone,
"This is really theater,
and I've gone for it."
[uplifting guitar music]
I think the strongest element in here,
and the most successful element,
is the headboard.
It's one big piece,
so it's got a big impact.
Nice choice of fabric.
Also, a very nice art decorative piece.
I also like the way
that he's pulled the palette
for the rest of the room
from that textile,
so whilst it's very subtle and pared back,
you can see these lovely oyster tones
reflected in the bed linen.
Then the lovely eau de nil velvet
I think the palette's really subtle,
but it works.
And, the client was
quite a conservative client.
They wanted something muted,
quite natural,
quite pared back in this room,
so I think it works as that kind of
wonderful contrast
the bonkers guest room,
and he has absolutely delivered.
Yeah.
[Fearne] Before returning
to the design studio,
the finalists are showing off
the newly-remodeled apartments
to the homeowners.
-Oh wow. Wow.
-Oh, my gosh!
I love it.
Oh, yeah.
This is me.
-[Cassie] Yeah?
-[Kim] Perfect.
-[Casey] Wow.
-[Kim] It is amazing.
[Kim] I think it's a colour
we'll just get used to, but...
I do...
really like where you've taken it.
[Cassie] Yeah? So glad you like it.
[Kim] Yes, love it.
Do you like?
I absolutely love it.
Oh, I'm so glad.
The curtains are gorgeous.
Go for it.
Oh, my word!
Yep, it's mad.
Overall,
are you happy with
what I've done in your apartment?
I think you're one class act.
Oh, Jo!
Thank you so much.
[Fearne] After eight weeks,
and eight tough design challenges,
soon, the moment of truth...
[serious bass tones]
I so want that contract.
I really do.
It would launch me as a designer,
and I just pray that Michelle sees me
as a better commercial designer
than Cassie.
[Cassie] It is so close now.
I am starting to freak out a little bit.
I'm getting quite nervous,
but I don't think I could have
done this task any better.
...as Frank and Cassie find out
who will win their first ever
professional design contract.
[Frank] I think it's fair to say that
there's definitely been a rivalry
between me and Cassie,
and having one of us crowned that winner
means so much more,
because it'll be finally like,
"I'm a bit better than you."
It would feel pretty good to beat him.
Hello, designers.
Hi, Fearne.
Well done
on completing your last challenge.
[Fearne] Now, as it's the final,
the judges would like to
talk to you separately.
So, Frank, you're up first.
[suspenseful music]
-Hi.
-Hi.
Back on the sofa.
[Michelle] The kitchen was
an exceptional transformation,
but then there was this big space
-behind the sofa.
-Yeah. Yeah.
The idea was to have a zoned reading area
behind that sofa,
so maybe an armchair with a footstool
or something like that,
and a lot more book shelving
for book storage,
but I ran out of money.
[Michelle] I would like to understand
just a little bit more about
how you...
prioritized your decisions
in deciding, "Right,
I'm going to do the kitchen,
I'm going to add storage,"
at the cost of other things.
Can you just talk me through that
a little bit more?
For me, immediately,
I wasn't happy with keeping the kitchen,
and I didn't really see
a way of tying it into the space
in a good way,
but I prioritized it
and made a bad decision,
because I think my master bedroom
really lacked something.
It was not right,
and I was not happy with it.
I wouldn't beat yourself up
too much, Frank,
to be honest, because I thought
the headboard in that room
was really lovely, actually.
Probably not going to
make those mistakes again.
I think good for you
that you're able to...
know where your errors were.
-Yeah.
-Definitely.
I mean, I've just met you, Frank,
and I'm really impressed with
your ability to learn.
I mean, to start off with,
we had quite a tough chat, didn't we?
-Yeah.
-Maybe around round three or four,
and it was really like,
"Are you listening to me?"
And, something switched, and you did,
you started listening,
and that is when you started to grow.
Yeah, I really, in this whole experience,
I've soaked as much up as I can,
and, you know,
I really think I've got what it takes
to carry out this contract.
I genuinely do.
-Thank you.
-Thanks, Frank.
-Thanks, Frank.
-See you in a bit.
If you could send Cassie in,
-that'd be wonderful.
-Will do.
-How did it go?
-It's alright, you know.
-Yeah? You alright?
-At the end of the day, it's the final.
I thought it was quite a good
fighting chat, to be honest,
and I basically pleaded to win!
I just hope they take on board
how much I've grown,
and see, really, I think,
out of both of me or Cassie,
which one is suited to
this commercial contract,
and, in my view,
it is me.
Cassie, I wanted to ask you,
I love colour, and I know you do, too.
In particular the bedroom,
I loved your use of pattern and colour
and your textiles.
So, I guess my question is,
in the lounge,
my overriding instinct was,
"Oh, it's quite beige."
-Yeah.
-It's quite sort of neutral.
I'm so chuffed you say that
about the bedroom, because...
I felt the bedroom was the room
that was a bit more about me,
but the living space, they did ask for
a neutral, contemporary grown-up space.
I didn't want to scare them too much,
so I pushed them in the bedroom,
and I gave them
half what I thought they were after
in the lounge.
I think maybe another colour in there
would have been a nice thing to do,
but I was trying to do that
with the brasses,
like on the feet of the sofa and stuff,
just add a bit of that kind of--
I've got one question for you, Cassie
I think the nursery
was extremely well-executed.
What other consideration
did you give to this imminent baby
in other parts of the apartment?
In the other parts of the apartment...
Well...
The baby...
Do you think you considered
practicalities enough?
I do think I considered
practicalities enough.
I made sure with the kitchen
that the storage I took away
I gave them more.
Because on offer
at the end of this, potentially, is...
It's a real-life commission
to do a real-life project.
-Yeah.
-How do you feel? Do you feel that
you could be ready to do
something like that?
Yeah, totally.
Totally. I've learned loads.
I've always trusted my eye,
and I've always known what I've liked,
and I don't think I've changed
that much in my style,
but I think I've just learned
how to do things better
and be more confident
in my decision-making.
-See you in a bit.
-Alrighty.
I think I've done well,
and I was nervous about the questions,
when they were asking about,
did I think of the baby enough?
But... I can only do what I've done.
There's nothing I can change
about it now, so...
just have to wait to see...
see what they say, really.
[Fearne] After judging Frank and Cassie
throughout their eight
ambitious design challenges,
Michelle must now choose a winner.
Just this one.
-What's that one?
-Is this the chalets?
I like these sections.
[Fearne] Ambitious design challenges,
a few familiar faces are welcomed back.
Oh, is she on the same team?
Oh, my gosh, that looks amazing!
I'm very proud of both of them.
I like Cassie's style,
but I like Frank's design more.
I love this. This is so calm.
And I really love that as well, actually.
Gosh.
I probably am drawn more
to Cassie's style.
I'm just in awe
that she's managed to do
so many different things.
Only can be one winner.
So,
here we are.
What an eight weeks it's been.
But, with only one
design contract on offer,
of course there can only be one winner.
[epic piano riffs]
At the beginning of this competition,
I said I was looking for the designer
who evolved the most with every challenge.
Someone who could be a real team player,
but also excel as an individual.
I was looking for vision and versatility,
and real innovation in design,
as well as decoration,
and I think we found that person.
So, I am delighted to announce...
that the winner...
...is Cassie.
Well done!
I feel quite overwhelmed.
You know, it's amazing. It's amazing.
I don't really know what...
to say or how I'm feeling.
I feel...
so happy, I can't...
I just can't believe it, really.
Being a great interior designer
is the sum of many parts,
and Cassie's kind of got it all going on.
She has a great eye,
she's got this ability
to get inside the head of the client,
she has an intuitive grasp
of how to plan and manage,
but, more than anything,
she has a really unique vision.
Congratulations to Cassie, absolutely.
Genuinely, she's done so well. I'm...
bloody happy with second place.
I never thought it would happen,
so I am chuffed to bits.
-[Naomi] Well done!
-[Cassie] Thank you so much.
I've always felt that...
I've got a very clear style
and a good eye,
if not essentially as a designer
and actually making it happen.
So, it's made me...
a whole lot more confident
in my skills, my ability.
And, it just means I can
go out there and actually do this.

Christian Bretschneider
Who doesn't love interior design?
But, what if you wanted
to turn that passion
into a full-time career?
[Fearne] From across the UK,
these ten everyday people
with dreams to become designers
are looking for a big life change.
It's going up!
Hoping to make a name for themselves
in the ruthless world
of professional design.
They're competing to win
a major career-defining contract
to design the grand historic bar
at one of London's top hotels.
Yeah, let's do it!
Over the last eight weeks,
they've transformed shops...
Oh, I like this.
They've put lino on the walls, isn't it?
-Yeah.
-That's a good idea.
...holiday cabins...
Oh, wow.
Making me slightly worried about ours.
...and hair salons.
I love it.
[Ju]I love that light there,
with the jelly beans.
And, they've impressed
some big industry names
along the way.
I would come in here and think,
"This is a craft shop
that knows its stuff." It's fun.
It's got some maturity,
it's got some depth.
...and it looks like
the cover of a magazine.
She's brought in that sense of history,
but she's actually done it
in a way that's quite contemporary.
Yeah. I mean, wow. Strong.
But, now only two designers remain,
as they face
the biggest opportunity of their lives.
I don't think it's sunk in at all
that I'm in the final,
but to win would be...
God, to win would be great.
I am going to give this my all,
and I am determined now,
especially as I'm against Cassie,
to win.
We're not just
giving them a bit of crystal,
it's a very serious contract,
and it's the kind of contract
that will launch someone's career.
Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
[upbeat electronic music]
[Fearne] It's the final week
at Michelle's design studio.
Having survived seven
tough commercial projects,
the ultimate brief awaits.
[Fearne] Frank and Cassie.
-[Frank] Hello.
-[Fearne] Oh, my goodness.
This is it, this is the final!
I know, I can't believe it. This is crazy.
It's safe to say that you guys
have had a colourfull relationship
throughout this experience.
Is there some nice, healthy
rivalry present for the final?
-Yeah, definitely.
-Yeah.
-We both want to win...
-Yeah.
...but we have got this
genuine love for each other.
Well, I am wishing you
all the love and luck
for this final.
I'm so excited to see what you do.
Let's see Michelle. We're going to
find out about the challenge,
and she's also got some
wise words of advice for you both.
Thanks.
[Fearne] I present to you, Michelle,
our finalists.
-[Michelle]Our final two!
-[Cassie] Hi, Michelle.
[Michelle] Welcome.
Now, as you know, there's a big prize
at the end of this competition,
so this next challenge
is really about seeing
who's got what it takes
to deliver a high-value contract
to a big client.
We are headed to Royal Mills
in Manchester.
[energetic rock music]
[tram bell rings]
[Fearne] In the north of England
lies a 200-year-old former cotton mill
that's been converted into
upmarket open-plan living.
Taking on a two-bed apartment each,
the finalists have their work cut out
to turn these large blank spaces
into inspirational homes,
to include kitchen,
dining and living zones.
We're at that point now
when an amazing career opportunity
is right there at your fingertips,
and if I could offer you both
just one last bit of advice,
it would be...
remember that this is the client's home
and not your own,
and also to really
immerse yourself in the space,
and make sure it works
from all perspectives.
Good luck.
-Thank you so much.
-Come on!
[Fearne] The winner
of this final challenge
will be presented with
a huge commercial contract
at a top London hotel.
Before making a start
on their design plans,
the finalists are visiting the apartments
and meeting the owners
to discuss the brief.
Jo?
-[Jo] Hello.
-Nice to meet you.
With so much at stake,
getting to know their client is critical.
From reading your brief,
-I know that there's this Scandi theme.
-Yes.
So, I love the Scandi design,
[Frank] Yep.
but I don't like
the extreme sparseness of it.
[Frank] Okay.
So you want it to feel warm and welcoming.
I do. I want it to feel like a home,
a family home.
I think the biggest challenge with Jo
is that, one, I don't think she's
the most aesthetic-driven person,
and two, because I want to
push this really hard,
because it is the final,
I'm scared of pushing it too hard
that she might think
it's just way too trendy for her.
My big redesign
is that I plan to build
a huge built-in storage unit
that goes all round
from that area of the room
right round to these kitchen cupboards.
It basically is a huge window seat.
-My husband is an obsessive reader,
-[quizzical music plays]
so it might be a nice spot
for him to read.
-Love it.
-Okay!
Oh, that's good. That's a good reaction.
Ultimately, it's the final,
so I'm just going to go all out
to impress Michelle
and the guest judges.
[Fearne] Assisting Michelle
in her final decision
are two highly-esteemed
design industry experts.
Making a welcome return from week one
is fashion designer
turned interiors specialist
Matthew Williamson.
Within this final week,
what I'm really looking for
is a sense of these designers' DNA,
and their character,
and how they've really
expressed themselves in these homes.
[Fearne] And, scrutinizing alongside him
is the highly-regarded English consultant
and interior designer Naomi Cleaver.
Design isn't just about prettiness,
about lovely things.
You really need to
get into the head of your client
and create something for them that
they didn't even know that they wanted,
but they do when they see it.
-Hi there!
-Hi.
I'm Cassie, nice to meet you.
[Fearne] Hoping to impress the judges
and create something special
for her clients,
antiques dealer Cassie.
-This is the nursery?
-Yes.
In terms of this room,
it's just really about...
making it a little bit of fun.
I'm feeling really confident about winning
this challenge. It's a great space.
I want to make sure that
when they have their new baby arrive,
they've got the perfect house
and they don't have to worry about
doing anything to it.
It's all going to be done,
and work for them really well.
The one thing I want to speak to you
mostly about is the master bedroom,
because it does...
The word "neutral" gets mentioned.
-[Client] That sort of palette.
-[Cassie] You said kind of boho chic?
Yeah.
And, I was thinking
a terracotta-y kind of colour.
[Client] I trust your judgment
when it comes to colours.
I just want to have an atmosphere.
I just want the atmosphere
when I go into the room to be relaxing
and open and airy.
It's not anything I head in my head.
Yeah.
I'm excited and nervous, really.
I think that some of the ideas are
probably a bit more "out there"
than what I would've...
ever have done.
The rug's antique, right?
-Yeah.
-So that's your style, which I like.
Having a few pieces
that are authentic and original,
it's going to help also
ground this building.
-I feel like we're on the same page.
-Yeah?
-I'm really excited.
-Okay, amazing.
That's awesome.
I think Kim and Casey are really on board
with my designs and ideas.
I don't think there's too much
I have to be careful with,
I'm hoping that I can just give them
something that they may not do themselves.
However, it would be something
that they're really going to love,
and, yeah, that would be the best thing.
[driving electronic music]
It's the day of reckoning
for Cassie and Frank.
[Frank] Well, may the best man win, Cass.
[Fearne] Over the next three days,
they'll have to prove
they've got what it takes
to impress their clients.
Feels a whole lot bigger.
With £6,000 to spend,
the finalists have double the usual budget
as they aim to turn
these tricky open-plan apartments
into prize-winning spaces.
going to look great.
Alongside the usual tradespeople...
[Cassie] So, there's quite a lot to build.
...they've each chosen
a former teammate to help out.
Hello!
Nicki!
Me and Nicki worked so well together
in the knit shop,
and it's so great to have her on board.
Your hair looks lovely.
Oh, thanks!
-Kyle!
-Hello!
How are you?
Kyle's very, very good at
that kind of practical element.
This is nice.
Welcome to the blank canvas.
Having him on board
to relieve the pressure off me
I think will really help.
[driving electronic music]
[Fearne] Frank's taking a high-end
approach to his apartment,
including bespoke mid-century style
blue and white cabinets in the kitchen,
while in the open-plan living space,
he's creating a drywall
with recessed shelving
along the length of the apartment,
adding a luxury sofa
and new bookshelves.
In the master bedroom,
he's installing an oversize
upholstered headboard,
luxury new curtains,
and soft furnishings
in blue, gray and oyster tones.
Finally, in the guest bedroom,
Frank's trademark use
of pattern and colour
will include a midnight blue headboard,
customized mustard velvet blinds,
and a bold leaf-print wallpaper
on the wall.
We've got this...
-incredible wallpaper...
-Nice.
-...going on every single wall.
-Right.
I do really like what he's come up with.
He's got really good ideas, he's managed
to work with the space really well,
come up with some interesting storage.
I'm a bit concerned whether
the colour scheme might be too much,
but he's in the final,
at the end, so he's got to go for it.
[Fearne] Rival designer Cassie
is aiming to blow away the judges.
So, on the main wall in this room,
the paint colour's
actually called Puppy Love,
and Puppy Love is bringing a lot
to this space at the minute.
[Fearne] And, she's not taking
any chances,
with plans drawn up for every room.
Because, there's only one of me,
and a lot of people have got to know
what's going on inside my head,
I've done loads of drawings for this one.
and just a few bonus mood board pictures,
so that everybody has a good idea
what's going on in each room.
I've never been so prepared for something.
[Fearne] As well as zoning off the kitchen
with a new floor,
Cassie's building an island
as the centerpiece for the room.
She plans to break up
the open-plan living area
by creating some narrow shelving
along the wall of the entire apartment,
is customizing a modular sofa,
and styling the living space
with neutral furnishings.
In the master bedroom,
she's going for boho chic,
with coral pink on the walls and ceiling,
a built-in headboard
and vintage furniture
and fabrics throughout.
Finally, in the nursery,
Cassie's going for a monochrome scheme,
mixing high street flat-pack furniture
for the baby
with an antique day bed
and 70s hanging seat for Mum to enjoy.
So, this is the nursery.
There's so many things they asked for,
and one of the main things was monochrome.
So I'm trying to add in
loads of different things like that
to make sure that it works.
[Nicki] I really love what Cassie's
got planned,
but it is massive space,
so I'm kind of
a small bit glad it's not me.
And, this is obviously
your key final line.
Do you want a wider gap?
I think I prefer this
kind of like deeper.
If it's equal, it looks a bit too neat.
It's supposed to just be
that tiny line on top.
There's so many details, so much to do.
I am nervous about it.
I don't feel like...
everything, you know,
everything's not going to go to plan,
but I don't want to drop anything,
so I just kind of have to
work through it all,
and make it work.
[hip-hop beat]
This is the artwork.
[Fearne] Hoping to wow the judges
in the kitchen...
-So if we can start framing those now.
-Yeah.
...Frank's hanging new
luxury cupboard doors.
[Frank] How are you getting on
with the cupboards?
-[Builder] Getting there.
-[Frank]They look really smart.
Frank!
Hello, how are you?
Who cares about me, how are you?
I'm good.
What do you think Michelle
is looking for at this point, the final?
I think...
Michelle...
wants to see a perfect finish,
it being fit for a commercial contract,
and I think that's why I took this route,
it's going to be a lot more minimalistic,
because I've invested in
some really expensive pieces,
such as the kitchen.
-This is a great colour.
-It's gorgeous, isn't it?
All pre-made off-site,
so the guys just had to
hang the doors, get it on.
It took a good quarter of my budget,
but I think it was worth it.
I just want to get
that level of finish totally right,
so no bodge jobs,
no unfinishing, it needs to look perfect.
[Fearne] But, already halfway through
the first day,
Frank's hit a problem,
as his curtains for the master bedroom
are missing.
Okay, we're just
going round in circles with it,
because it was definitely over £95,
so can you get that
next day delivery on it, then?
We have got a slight issue,
in that the curtains
might not be getting here on time,
which I'm concerned about,
because that...
master bedroom
is the one area where they wanted, like...
curtains rather than romans.
My bespoke curtains,
which were another heavy investment,
because I wanted to do things properly
in this residential space,
they...
basically are delayed,
so Kyle is sorting that one out for me.
But, I'm just slightly concerned
where they are, how to get them here,
and if they're going to be finished.
[upbeat pop music]
[Fearne] Back in Cassie's open-plan
living space...
[Cassie] I think it would be quite nice
if we have one more shelf,
and had the third,
and then the uprights go up.
Hi, Cass!
Hey! How you doing?
Happy final to you!
Thank you so much.
This wall looks like it's going to be
a real focal point
when you walk in the room.
[Cassie] Yeah, I hope so.
I think the wall should be the feature,
but it doesn't have to do too much,
they don't want loads of stuff on it.
And, how much of a vintage feel
will you give it?
Because, obviously,
being the final,
you want to show what you're about,
and we all know what you love.
How much of that
will you inject into this home?
I think what I'll inject,
I've got a few pieces we're making,
a kitchen island,
but, you know, they didn't ask for...
antique, vintage.
They're just going to have
snippets they don't...
expect will turn up.
Do you think they're going to
walk back into their home
and think,
"Yes, I love this. I'm on board with it."
I'm not thinking about that. I'm hoping,
it might not be quite what they expect,
but I think that's a good thing.
The designer coming in,
if they got exactly what they hoped for,
then I don't think I've done my job.
I want a bit more than
what they hoped for.
[Fearne] Showcasing her unique style
in the master bedroom,
Cassie's painting her favorite
terracotta on the walls.
So...
walls, ceiling same colour?
Not this exposed wood.
They asked in here for boho chic.
I want to give them that,
but to do it all with neutral colours
might have been...
quite dull.
[rhythmic guitar music]
[Fearne] It's mid-afternoon.
In the guest bedroom...
So, we have some wallpaper going up.
...Frank's going all out
with a daring design on the walls.
[Frank] I love it!
-[Builder] Good.
-[Frank] Bonkers, isn't it?
But, I think that looks really quite cool.
[Frank] Wallpaper, pattern and colour,
it's not for everybody,
but I don't think Jo's had
anything quite like this
in somewhere that she's lived,
so I'm pushing her boundaries,
and I'm showing her
a different kind of space.
[epic rock music]
[Fearne] With the end
of the first day approaching...
[Nicki & Cassie laughing]
Cassie's on track.
Jo!
[Jo chuckles]]
There's wallpaper!
It looks awesome.
[Fearne] So, she's deciding to visit
her biggest rival.
Hey. How's everything going?
[Frank] Well.
Can we have a look in the living room?
-Yeah, go on.
-Do you want to show us?
Yeah, you can do.
[Nicki] Wow, that's gorgeous!
Is this all your new cabinets?
I'm eager
to hear your feedback on the lights.
-I don't know if I like them.
-No.
[Nicki & Cassie laughing]
With Cassie and me,
it's like, if I say the sky is blue,
she will say it's pink.
If I say the grass is green,
she'll say yellow.
Great. Well, be off. Ta-ta.
We just never agree on anything.
That was...
pretty good to go and see, I think.
I don't feel too worried.
[guitar picking]
[Fearne] Back in Cassie's apartment,
there's an unexpected visit
from the clients,
looking for a sneak preview.
Wow.
What do you think?
[Casey] It's...
-It's...
-Pink.
There's no argument
about how neutral it is.
It's very neutral!
-I don't think it's neutral at all.
-I think it's neutral.
-What?
-They're like earth colours, neutral.
This is exactly what you described.
[Kim laughing]
It's definitely not
what I had in my head, at all.
We've never had colour in the flat,
and that's quite a prominent colour.
It's on the ceiling,
on the skirting boards, on the walls.
So...
is...
-A bit worrying.
-A bit worrying, at the minute.
[tense string plucking music]
[Fearne] It's the second day of the build.
It has dawned on me
that it's the final.
I kind of...
I'm definitely feeling that today.
I just really want it to be good.
I don't want to let myself down.
I don't want the clients to not like it.
And...
I have started thinking about
what Frank's doing.
You know.
Do you think, by half past ten,
that can be up and that can be walloped
and on its first coat
and we can be onto the hallway?
[Fearne] In the next two days,
these apartments must be
finished and ready
for scrutiny by the judges.
I need to see some progress now
because it's...
I feel like we're at a...
-[Kyle] Standstill.
-[Frank] Yeah.
But, Frank's worrying
his ambitious rebuild
has slipped behind schedule.
How long do you think
this is going to take?
Five, six hours?
Yeah.
-Okay, let's get on, then.
-Yeah. Cool.
If you don't start cracking the whip
at this point in the day,
then before you know it,
seven o'clock tonight,
everybody will be panicking,
and it'll be a freak out.
So, I've got to
keep everybody going with it,
else it's not going to get done, is it?
Yeah, I'm really chuffed with this lino.
The colour of it
against the gray and the blue
really works.
Okay, shall we talk kitchen island?
This is the kitchen island?
This is the starting point
of the kitchen island.
In the kitchen,
Cassie's having a shot at upcycling
some old industrial shelves.
So, what I was thinking is,
if we cut this bit down here,
so then the whole thing is now that wide.
-I have got wheels for it,
-Okay.
that was always the plan, but I think
it still needs to be higher than that.
And, in the master bedroom,
she's adding some vintage finds
to her boho design.
And, I've got this
for the end of the bed, as well.
Okay. Oh, wow. Blimey.
As much as I really like that...
This might be the crazy thing.
...this is, you know,
may be the thing that maybe...
-pushes it...
-Yeah, I know what you're saying.
-on the crazy front.
-These colours look lovely.
I might hang this,
or do something else with it,
because I just think
it will fit in here so well.
Could it work as a rug?
Well, you know, there is that,
and it's only ever supposed to be
like something on the back of a chair.
I don't know.
I just think it's so cool.
[Fearne] Halfway through the challenge,
Frank's checking out the opposition.
Cass?
-[Cassie] Hello!
-[Frank] You alright?
Oh, my God!
Oh, my God.
They wanted boho chic.
God, they've defo got it, haven't they?
Bloody hell.
It's very Matthew Williamson.
I hope so.
-I hope he loves it.
-Very Matthew.
I'll be honest,
I just don't like it.
To me, that bedroom
just looks so uncomfortable.
The client has got to live in there,
you know? And...
No.
It's horrid. Horrid.
[uplifting electronic music]
Lunch time on day two,
and Frank's getting back on track.
Cool, so the carpet's arrived.
Shall I take the lino?
You take the others. You'll have to
carry it upstairs, unfortunately.
All of a sudden this afternoon,
I feel quite good about the space.
Carpets have arrived,
carpets are going down.
You can see colours
where they're meant to go.
I'm very happy.
It's going well, and the little...
[chattering from the builders]
That looks smart.
Exactly how I imagined, funny enough.
[Fearne] With only a few hours to go
before the day ends,
Cassie's working against the clock,
making soft furnishings
for the entire apartment.
These are the curtains
for the master bedroom.
So, I've got four of these to do,
and then there's four...
curtains to go up in the living room,
so I've got those to do after.
[Cassie] See if that works.
There was doors there before,
and I just think
curtains are quite a nice way
to make it a bit more homely,
rather than having boarded doors
and things like that.
Yeah, hopefully the curtains look nice.
[Fearne] In Frank's master,
he's also up against it,
trying to make a headboard
with ambitious integrated lighting.
So, we are cutting out the socket holes
so that when it's upholstered
it will be nice and fitted.
Really pray this is going to work.
It could either look really good,
or it could look absolutely shocking.
It looks like a bum hole,
I'm not going to lie.
It just doesn't look right.
So we're changing it.
How easy is it to cut it down now?
[Fearne] But, adapting the headboard
isn't the only late change Frank's facing.
[tense string plucking]
In the kitchen,
his new lino flooring is going down...
[Frank] You what, sorry?
[Builder] It's not big enough.
...but there's a problem.
[Builder] What size did you order?
Did you order a two-by-two?
Let's check.
Off the plans,
and what I've ordered,
it was to cover a 1.8 meter space,
but obviously it's wrong.
We're going to have to get
a whole new piece of lino, right?
So, is anywhere open now?
I can get a piece but I won't
be able to do it till tomorrow.
I'll come first thing in the morning.
-Yeah?
-Cool. That's amazing. Thank you.
No worries.
[Fearne] As the evening draws to a close,
both finalists still have plenty to do.
Tomorrow, they'll have just a few hours
to pull their designs together
before Michelle decides
who will be the winner
of this life-changing prize.
There's still so much to do,
and I just want to make sure
everything is finished as good as it can.
I don't know.
I think that we can feel the pressure now.
[Frank] How are you getting on, guys?
We've got so much to do, overall.
So much to do.
[sawing]
We've got loads to do.
So, can you finish the woodwork
in the next half-an-hour?
I know everyone's
got snagging on their mind,
but I need to get this finished.
I'm not going to have a sleepless night
over it, it is what it is.
I'm just going to work my bum off
in the morning,
try and get it done.
[Dramatic music fades]
[upward rolling synthesizers]
[Fearne] After eight grueling challenges,
for our two finalists,
one last day to impress the judges
before finding out their fate.
Excited to see this lino down.
Once and for all.
-So we've got quite a big to-do list.
-Yeah.
But first, one final push
to present apartments worthy of winning
the ultimate prize,
designing the bar
at one of London's top hotels.
[Cassie] I quite like this one
a little bit more ruffled.
-Do you?
-What do you think?
Just a little bit.
I quite like this end...
Maybe do it a bit like that?
-I think it needs to be a bit more--
-A bit more cazh.
Yeah.
[Fearne] Cassie's working flat out,
adding her own unique styling
to her scheme.
It's upside down.
Just putting on these little brass bits
onto the feet of the sofa.
I think it will be a nice detail
to lift the sofa
and tie it in with
all the other brass pieces,
look a bit more luxurious.
But, arch-rival Frank's only just starting
a key part of his design.
So, these bookshelves
are a very vital part of the brief.
It was going to originally have
way more built-in storage,
but we simplified it,
and they're basically ticks on the wall
which the books can slant inwards,
so they should look quite cool.
[Fearne] And, in the master bedroom,
he's still waiting for
his deluxe curtains.
Kyle?
Apparently the curtains
got here yesterday?
-Do you want me to call him?
-Yeah.
They're meant to be here
and they were delivered 11:30 yesterday,
however there's no sign of them,
so we need to track them down.
Which courier were they sent with?
[driving electronic music]
[Fearne] Both finalists
have less than an hour
before their apartments are revealed
to the judges.
Assisting Michelle are
Naomi Cleaver and Matthew Williamson.
A hugely successful
former fashion designer
famed for his print and colour,
Matthew's now
making a big name for himself
in the world of interiors,
with fabulous fabrics
and striking wallpaper collections.
Highly-regarded British interior designer
Naomi Cleaver
has an impressive portfolio
spanning private residences,
luxury beach houses,
five-star hotels
and high-end apartments.
So, here we are, it's the final.
So, we weren't going to
make it easy for them, were we?
But, there's a big prize on offer
at the end of this,
so we need to know
that they can really deliver
a proper, professional
beautifully-finished job.
It's a huge challenge, but it is...
massively exciting.
I saw them in their
very first stages
on their first properties,
and loved both of the designers' work.
So, it'll be really interesting
to see how the designers have evolved.
[Michelle] Definitely, because that
first challenge was a show home,
so there we were looking for
a broad, mass-market appeal.
But, here we're looking for
a really specific evocation
of these homeowners' character.
Obviously, designing open-plan space
has its own specific challenges,
You don't want this cacophonous...
hole to live in,
you want something
that feels and sounds
-and looks sensual...
-Softened.
...and inviting, and cozy.
And stylish, of course.
Is that the middle? Looks the middle here.
[serious tones]
[Fearne] With time almost up,
final finishing touches
for Frank and Cassie.
-[Cassie] It's pretty nice once you're in.
-[Nicki] It's lovely, yeah.
But, with time running out...
Are those the curtains?
...full-length luxury curtains still
need hanging in the master bedroom.
So basically, they go up
about here,
and then we're going to try and fit
a pelmet to go in above the top.
What do you mean, fit a pelmet?
So, we'll cut to the arc to the ceiling
a piece of MDF,
and then we'll upholster it,
then we'll put it in.
In an hour? And a curve,
and upholstery?
Frank, please,
you could've told me before,
we could've cut the wood.
I didn't even know
they were going to come.
At Cassie's place, it's job done.
Thank you so much.
You're so wonderful.
Win it now. You're going to win it.
[dramatic orchestral hits]
[Fearne] For the judges,
finally a chance to see
which designer has impressed the most.
[epic music]
I totally think
I've done enough to win this.
I've worked so hard,
and I've planned it meticulously.
I've found amazing things...
you know, that will work in there.
I can do commercial spaces. I can...
If I win, I can do that bar.
And I just, you know,
I hope they see that from this.
-[door opening]
-[footsteps on wooden floor]
[Naomi] This is actually really lovely.
-[Michelle] Very happy about that.
-[Naomi] Really nice.
[Naomi] It does feel very balanced,
doesn't it?
[Naomi] Everything sits together well,
which it has to do in an open-plan space.
[Michelle] And, it's great having
the sneaky shelving.
It makes the whole wall useful,
doesn't it?
[Matthew] It's very unexpected,
and clever.
But, the most significant
part of the brief, for me,
is the imminent arrival of this baby,
and where all that stuff is going to go.
[Matthew] There isn't a great deal
of storage.
[Michelle] You've got one cupboard.
[Naomi] Yeah.
And, then this kitchen,
this is a lovely piece.
She's actually fabricated this,
hasn't she?
[Michelle] Which I love,
I think it's all about texture,
but is there enough pattern
and bright colour for you, Matthew?
because you've been quite quiet.
I just feel a little underwhelmed
the more I stand in here.
I think there is lovely detail,
attention to detail,
great pieces bought,
great pieces made.
It's probably the colour for me.
It's quite barren.
Plain chairs, plain sofa,
plain cushions, plain curtains.
The only pattern
in the whole space is this...
floor, really.
[dramatic driving electronic music]
[Naomi] Oh, gosh.
-Matthew!
-Yes!
Colours!
[Matthew] It's a lovely progression
from downstairs, but here,
she's introduced colour, pattern, texture,
it feels really cozy.
There's confidence here. You feel like
she's released herself a bit here.
It also looks timeless to me, as well.
It doesn't feel on-trend right now,
with the colours, the textures.
It feels a bit gypsy, a bit retro,
you know, all those things
that are never going to go out of style.
I like the fact that she hasn't just done
what she's seen in a magazine this month.
It feels unique.
[slow guitar strumming]
-[Naomi] I really like this.
-[Matthew] Me too.
[Michelle] We've got a wonderful
virtuosity here.
I love the fact that all the decor's
dropped to child level.
I think this is wonderful.
I'm imagining Mum's going to be
feeding here, Mum or Dad.
[Matthew] I love that it's not
fell into that cliché of pink
and blue,
but is still really... appropriate.
I tell you a detail that I love,
is that, instead of just
painting up the wall in black,
it's just adding that stripe.
It would be too much,
wouldn't it, if it was just black?
You need that gradation,
because it's such a strong contrast.
But, it does make me think again,
it's like, we know she can do this,
why did she not do this downstairs?
[pumping electronic music]
Great.
Ten minutes!
Ten minutes, people.
[drilling]
Well done, Wayne.
Savior.
[slow bass tones]
It's been a really tough week.
I don't think there's
anything left for me now.
I'm literally exhausted.
But, I feel really good,
and I feel really proud
of what I've achieved.
I think it's a really good job well done.
We've got that kind of adventure wall,
if you like,
but here he's taken it
one step further than Cassie's
by giving it the extra depth.
[Naomi] Looks really lovely.
You've got this storage element
going all the way along,
and then this piece here
then becomes bench seating as well.
It's a very clever way to actually get
a lot of storage in
without imposing on the space too much.
[Naomi] Yeah. I think it probably
could have been more useful.
I recall reading the brief
that he is real bookworm.
Where's the shelving?
I mean, there's a tiny, teen--
-That's...
-Yeah.
That is not the shelving of a bookworm.
No.
There's a huge amount of space there.
What happens in that space?
It's a shame there's not a rug
and a chair and a side table,
-then it would be a mini-library.
-He could've just...
swooshed the sofa back,
added a few more rugs.
But then, quite a radical
transformation in the kitchen.
He's done that age-old
fantastic economical trick
of just changing all the cupboard fronts,
and you instantly get
a completely different look.
This is a nice little detail,
with the walnut,
and resonates with the round
details in the flooring.
Lots of clean lines here, isn't there?
Lots of flat surfaces. Quite...
masculine, almost.
I love the lights behind you, Michelle.
I think they're...
They add bit of drama
and a bit of vintage decadence.
[dramatic piano chords]
[Michelle] Lovely wallpaper.
-Quite impactful.
-Yeah.
It's a really nice wallpaper.
Very energetic.
But, I do think
this is Frank's comfort zone.
He loves his kind of bedrooms.
Here, he shows exactly what he can do,
and I think it's been quite brave
with what he's clashed, and I...
I'm happy to go with it.
I wish he'd have gone even further
and took the gold into the ceiling, and...
put the crazy lights in the lounge
on that wall, and just gone,
"This is really theater,
and I've gone for it."
[uplifting guitar music]
I think the strongest element in here,
and the most successful element,
is the headboard.
It's one big piece,
so it's got a big impact.
Nice choice of fabric.
Also, a very nice art decorative piece.
I also like the way
that he's pulled the palette
for the rest of the room
from that textile,
so whilst it's very subtle and pared back,
you can see these lovely oyster tones
reflected in the bed linen.
Then the lovely eau de nil velvet
I think the palette's really subtle,
but it works.
And, the client was
quite a conservative client.
They wanted something muted,
quite natural,
quite pared back in this room,
so I think it works as that kind of
wonderful contrast
the bonkers guest room,
and he has absolutely delivered.
Yeah.
[Fearne] Before returning
to the design studio,
the finalists are showing off
the newly-remodeled apartments
to the homeowners.
-Oh wow. Wow.
-Oh, my gosh!
I love it.
Oh, yeah.
This is me.
-[Cassie] Yeah?
-[Kim] Perfect.
-[Casey] Wow.
-[Kim] It is amazing.
[Kim] I think it's a colour
we'll just get used to, but...
I do...
really like where you've taken it.
[Cassie] Yeah? So glad you like it.
[Kim] Yes, love it.
Do you like?
I absolutely love it.
Oh, I'm so glad.
The curtains are gorgeous.
Go for it.
Oh, my word!
Yep, it's mad.
Overall,
are you happy with
what I've done in your apartment?
I think you're one class act.
Oh, Jo!
Thank you so much.
[Fearne] After eight weeks,
and eight tough design challenges,
soon, the moment of truth...
[serious bass tones]
I so want that contract.
I really do.
It would launch me as a designer,
and I just pray that Michelle sees me
as a better commercial designer
than Cassie.
[Cassie] It is so close now.
I am starting to freak out a little bit.
I'm getting quite nervous,
but I don't think I could have
done this task any better.
...as Frank and Cassie find out
who will win their first ever
professional design contract.
[Frank] I think it's fair to say that
there's definitely been a rivalry
between me and Cassie,
and having one of us crowned that winner
means so much more,
because it'll be finally like,
"I'm a bit better than you."
It would feel pretty good to beat him.
Hello, designers.
Hi, Fearne.
Well done
on completing your last challenge.
[Fearne] Now, as it's the final,
the judges would like to
talk to you separately.
So, Frank, you're up first.
[suspenseful music]
-Hi.
-Hi.
Back on the sofa.
[Michelle] The kitchen was
an exceptional transformation,
but then there was this big space
-behind the sofa.
-Yeah. Yeah.
The idea was to have a zoned reading area
behind that sofa,
so maybe an armchair with a footstool
or something like that,
and a lot more book shelving
for book storage,
but I ran out of money.
[Michelle] I would like to understand
just a little bit more about
how you...
prioritized your decisions
in deciding, "Right,
I'm going to do the kitchen,
I'm going to add storage,"
at the cost of other things.
Can you just talk me through that
a little bit more?
For me, immediately,
I wasn't happy with keeping the kitchen,
and I didn't really see
a way of tying it into the space
in a good way,
but I prioritized it
and made a bad decision,
because I think my master bedroom
really lacked something.
It was not right,
and I was not happy with it.
I wouldn't beat yourself up
too much, Frank,
to be honest, because I thought
the headboard in that room
was really lovely, actually.
Probably not going to
make those mistakes again.
I think good for you
that you're able to...
know where your errors were.
-Yeah.
-Definitely.
I mean, I've just met you, Frank,
and I'm really impressed with
your ability to learn.
I mean, to start off with,
we had quite a tough chat, didn't we?
-Yeah.
-Maybe around round three or four,
and it was really like,
"Are you listening to me?"
And, something switched, and you did,
you started listening,
and that is when you started to grow.
Yeah, I really, in this whole experience,
I've soaked as much up as I can,
and, you know,
I really think I've got what it takes
to carry out this contract.
I genuinely do.
-Thank you.
-Thanks, Frank.
-Thanks, Frank.
-See you in a bit.
If you could send Cassie in,
-that'd be wonderful.
-Will do.
-How did it go?
-It's alright, you know.
-Yeah? You alright?
-At the end of the day, it's the final.
I thought it was quite a good
fighting chat, to be honest,
and I basically pleaded to win!
I just hope they take on board
how much I've grown,
and see, really, I think,
out of both of me or Cassie,
which one is suited to
this commercial contract,
and, in my view,
it is me.
Cassie, I wanted to ask you,
I love colour, and I know you do, too.
In particular the bedroom,
I loved your use of pattern and colour
and your textiles.
So, I guess my question is,
in the lounge,
my overriding instinct was,
"Oh, it's quite beige."
-Yeah.
-It's quite sort of neutral.
I'm so chuffed you say that
about the bedroom, because...
I felt the bedroom was the room
that was a bit more about me,
but the living space, they did ask for
a neutral, contemporary grown-up space.
I didn't want to scare them too much,
so I pushed them in the bedroom,
and I gave them
half what I thought they were after
in the lounge.
I think maybe another colour in there
would have been a nice thing to do,
but I was trying to do that
with the brasses,
like on the feet of the sofa and stuff,
just add a bit of that kind of--
I've got one question for you, Cassie
I think the nursery
was extremely well-executed.
What other consideration
did you give to this imminent baby
in other parts of the apartment?
In the other parts of the apartment...
Well...
The baby...
Do you think you considered
practicalities enough?
I do think I considered
practicalities enough.
I made sure with the kitchen
that the storage I took away
I gave them more.
Because on offer
at the end of this, potentially, is...
It's a real-life commission
to do a real-life project.
-Yeah.
-How do you feel? Do you feel that
you could be ready to do
something like that?
Yeah, totally.
Totally. I've learned loads.
I've always trusted my eye,
and I've always known what I've liked,
and I don't think I've changed
that much in my style,
but I think I've just learned
how to do things better
and be more confident
in my decision-making.
-See you in a bit.
-Alrighty.
I think I've done well,
and I was nervous about the questions,
when they were asking about,
did I think of the baby enough?
But... I can only do what I've done.
There's nothing I can change
about it now, so...
just have to wait to see...
see what they say, really.
[Fearne] After judging Frank and Cassie
throughout their eight
ambitious design challenges,
Michelle must now choose a winner.
Just this one.
-What's that one?
-Is this the chalets?
I like these sections.
[Fearne] Ambitious design challenges,
a few familiar faces are welcomed back.
Oh, is she on the same team?
Oh, my gosh, that looks amazing!
I'm very proud of both of them.
I like Cassie's style,
but I like Frank's design more.
I love this. This is so calm.
And I really love that as well, actually.
Gosh.
I probably am drawn more
to Cassie's style.
I'm just in awe
that she's managed to do
so many different things.
Only can be one winner.
So,
here we are.
What an eight weeks it's been.
But, with only one
design contract on offer,
of course there can only be one winner.
[epic piano riffs]
At the beginning of this competition,
I said I was looking for the designer
who evolved the most with every challenge.
Someone who could be a real team player,
but also excel as an individual.
I was looking for vision and versatility,
and real innovation in design,
as well as decoration,
and I think we found that person.
So, I am delighted to announce...
that the winner...
...is Cassie.
Well done!
I feel quite overwhelmed.
You know, it's amazing. It's amazing.
I don't really know what...
to say or how I'm feeling.
I feel...
so happy, I can't...
I just can't believe it, really.
Being a great interior designer
is the sum of many parts,
and Cassie's kind of got it all going on.
She has a great eye,
she's got this ability
to get inside the head of the client,
she has an intuitive grasp
of how to plan and manage,
but, more than anything,
she has a really unique vision.
Congratulations to Cassie, absolutely.
Genuinely, she's done so well. I'm...
bloody happy with second place.
I never thought it would happen,
so I am chuffed to bits.
-[Naomi] Well done!
-[Cassie] Thank you so much.
I've always felt that...
I've got a very clear style
and a good eye,
if not essentially as a designer
and actually making it happen.
So, it's made me...
a whole lot more confident
in my skills, my ability.
And, it just means I can
go out there and actually do this.
