THE HORMONES

The endocrine glands.

Testicles or ovaries. The pancreas,
adrenal, thyroid and parathyroid glands.

Their job? To secrete hormones.

The most important one of all,
is the pituitary gland.

It only measures a centimeter in diameter,

But, it depends on the hypothalamus,
which is at the center of the brain,

and receives the messages sent by
the nervous system, coordinating it

with the function of the endocrine system.

The hormones. They play an important part,
influencing organs, and the entire body.

For example, Adrenalin, which is
created by the adrenal glands,

is the hormone of alert and urgency.

Its job is to speed things up,

to dilate the vessels of
the muscles in use

to enable a better irrigation of the body.

To stimulate the heart,
to mobilize the sugars

that feed the body and make it less tired.

To dilate the pupils and the bronchus,

and to help us through stress.

What on earth is happening?

Well... I...

Wait a minute, hang on!

By my beard, what were you doing,
fiddling in there?

l was working Maestro.

Inside my beard? How odd.

Yes indeed, I was hard at work.

Fine, I will forgive you this time

but, you better answer that telephone!

Hello? Yes, this is the hypothalamus
exchange, good morning to you

Well, what are you waiting for?
Take note of our messages.

Very well, alright, at once

"Immediate secretion of TSH hormones,
to stimulate the thyroid gland."

"Speed up the metabolism."

The game has just begun, it’s
going to be long.

"Activate the Alpha cells in the pancreas,
for the secretion of glucagon."

"The muscles need some fuel,
so the sugar reserves must be freed."

But we’re in the Hypothalamus, we’re part
of the brain.

We don't make hormones, do we?

Listen, we in the brain's control room.
We co-ordinate and transmit commands.

-Where to, Boss?
-There.

There?

No, you half-wit, under my foot!

To the floor below, down to the pituitary.

Oh, I see.

Oh, no!

That’s enough up there!

What's going on up there?

Hormones of course.
It’s always about hormones.

Ready for use.

Ready for use.

Ready for use.

Oh. Ah, I see!

I pull this thing, to start. Hmm?

Wait!

TSH, responsible for stimulating
the thyroid gland

please, go that way.

Just a moment

What about the number plates?

Oh, look at me.

Come along hormones,

you have a long journey,
all the way to the thyroid, so go!

What?

That wasn’t very nice!

We didn't do it on purpose, sir.

Let that be a lesson to them.

-What are these funny looking engines?
-Those, children, are TSH.

They go from the pituitary,
to the thyroid,

to tell it to manufacture other messengers

whose task will be, to activate the
production of energy.

What about those?

You could call them relay hormones.

Relay hormones, you say? Of course!

l can't take any more.

l am exhausted. I need more energy.

They can’t make us work, as hard as this,
without feeding us.

You’re right pal, it's absolutely inhuman!

Hey, is that all?
Have you seen my furnaces?

I won’t get anywhere, with that.

Well, there we are.
We’re out of sugar again,

and now, there is almost no oxygen left,
but they won’t listen to us.

Well, why are they asking for energy,

if they don't give us anything
to make it with.

I'm sure it'll arrive soon.
The sugar reserves are nearly full.

Same with the oxygen.

They assured me they had it.
It just takes time, to fetch all of it.

We can’t keep this up, the fire's
going out.

My little vials of iodine!

My support!

You're my consolation. You give me joy.

You know that the thyroid gland
is the biggest and the only,

the single reserve of iodine in the body.

And it belongs to me!

Who's that? Why have you
come to spy on me?

Mister Keeper?

Yes, what is it?

We’ve brought you new supplies, sir.

I think it's iodine.

Well done, oh, very well done.

All this lovely iodine,
and it's mine, all mine.

I'm responsible for it.
Place it over there.

Perfect! Hey, wait!

You didn't take any, right?

-What would we take?
-Iodine of course!

Show me your hands! Come on, show me.

What about them? They're empty.

What about the others?

No. Nothing.

You’re alright. You there,
show me your hands.

Let me put this in the treasury...

Well, I'll be...

The iodine treasure, get it?

-Is he a bit cuckoo?
-Yes, he is.

The Keeper is crazy.
He acts as if the iodine is his alone.

A plague on misers and miserliness, I say.

My iodine! My dear, my beautiful iodine.

I have got inexhaustible supplies.

Inexhaustible, I tell you.

One microgram,

marvelous. Two of them, even better!

Three micrograms, fantastic.

What shall we do?

Let's just tell him what we need.

He's not going to like that...

The iodine reserves are
meant to be used, aren’t they?

What else are they there for?

You know he likes to look at them,
and rearrange them,

to count and lock them up.

Well, go and tell him.

No, no, no, no, you must go.

What about the iodine we need
to make the hormones,

have you got it, or not?

Huh?

Oh no, not my little vials of iodine,
my precious reserves!

You’re not taking them, are you?

But Mister Keeper,

the iodine reserves are meant to be used,
when necessary.

Let go of my leg!

But I have hardly got any reserves left.

Iodine's so scarce.

Couldn't you come back, another time?

I am sorry, but I have orders.

We have to fill an urgent order.

But is it really, very urgent?

Look for yourself.

No, no, no.

"An order from the brain, sent by the
pituitary"

What? Oh no, no.

"According to this, the thyroid must make
hormones urgently,

-to speed up the supply of energy."
-No, no, no. No!"

"And release the iodine reserves
immediately."

Release the iodine reserves immediately!

No, no, no.

Release the iodine reserves immediately.

Huh?

Release the iodine, release the iodine!

My treasures. My iodine!

Okay, eight and a half, nine.

Ten micrograms of iodine, that’s fine.
Assemble everyone.

Robbers, thieves, assassins, murderers!

I must have justice, good heavens.
l am lost.

I have been murdered.
They've cut my throat.

They have taken all the iodine,
what's going to happen to it.

Where is it, where is it hidden?

How am I going to find it?

Where shall I run to, maybe here?

Or there?

Give me back my iodine, you thief!

It's only me. I'm in a really bad way.

What a nut! A real lunatic!

They don’t make them like that anymore.

Sir!

Mr. Keeper?

The Keeper? Yes, I'm the Keeper.

Look, they've taken everything.

There's nothing left, almost nothing.

What'll become of me? I'm out of iodine.
Go away!

I have brought a few bottles.

Oh, Goody! You've brought some iodine!

That gives me so much joy.

l am going to rebuild my treasure
bit by bit.

There's very little in here,

very little indeed.

Is that all you have got? Are you sure?

Another one ready for use.

Hurry.

What is going on here?

That's enough, get going.

Oh!

Thanks.

You are a thyroid hormone, TH.

You are a thyroid hormone, TH.

Look, up there!

l see the thyroid has been well informed,
because here are its iodized messages.

Perfect.

The TH hormones are on their way, good.

l also going to need glucagon hormones,
to release the sugars in the liver.

We'll check that later.

First, some adrenaline, to stimulate
the nervous system and the heart.

All set, adrenaline?

Come on adrenal glands, get to work.

The adrenaline hormones!

Without doubt, the most
powerful of all the hormones.

Are you ready?

Get set!

Straight to the heart!

Ninety beats a minute.

Ninety-two!

Ninety-three!

We're the adrenaline messengers,
here to stimulate the heartbeat.

It must get up to 120 beats a minute.

So, let's go!

A hundred and twenty beats a minute,
watch out, he might get overtired.

We need more oxygen!

Well, the oxygen looks fine.

Is the sugar coming?

Admit it, colleague,

l am the fastest, the cleverest,
the most useful

the most futile, no I mean flyest of
all the messengers.

Do you think there's time for chat?

Get to the pancreas, on the double.

It's very urgent!

Look at that, that never happens with us.

Yes, I wish we could take a nap.

Make some glucagon at once please,
to release the sugar reserves.

Glucagon hormone... gluca... gluca...

Yes, well... it's extremely urgent.

Am I ready? Right. Thank you.

Good. Are you ready?

Your destination is the factories of the
liver and their reserves of sugar.

Ready, glucagon hormones?

Go!

We're the glucagon hormones, coming to
release the sugar into the blood.

Please let us in.

Sea salt for sale.
Who wants my salt with iodine?

Sea salt for sale! Sea salt for sale!

You'll never find better salt.

Don't hesitate to come.

Over here, over here for
the very best sea salt.

Move on everyone. Come along.

Remember to respect
the right of way and don't...

Just don’t panic.

I don't get it, Lieutenant.
l just don't know what's got into them.

It's because the body's
working really hard.

The metabolism has been speeded up by all
this circulation of hormones.

Just look at them.

We're the thyroid hormones.

I see you've got some fuel.

We’ve come to start producing energy.

One bag of sugar, six bubbles of oxygen.

One bag of sugar, six bubbles of oxygen.

The energy seems to be building up. Good.

No?

Let's have a look. Where are the reserves?

No more sugar? Getting the fats

moving, will take time.

What about the heart?

Huh? What?

A hundred and thirty beats,
without supplies

that's crazy,

that's exhaustion.

That's no good!

That's no good at all.

l am exhausted, one can’t even get rid

of the carbon dioxide.

And we have to bring more oxygen.

Always more oxygen,
I can't take it anymore.

That's a red corpuscles' job, children!

Even if it's not much fun, we have to
do our best as always.

Our friends look exhausted.

That's because the whole body's
extremely tired.

Our enemies the germs could sneak in!

They could Lieutenant.
The breathing's so rapid,

that dust might break through
the protective barrier.

We'd better watch out.

-What’re you doing?
-Leave us alone.

Calm down, please.

We are going to need your
help, for a little while.

What do we do now?

How about some nice pneumonia?

But the bronchi are quite far away.

Let's follow the circulation,
that'll get us there soon.

But that’s dangerous, the body’s well
protected.

But we can multiply on the way.

Okay guys, now's the time!

Let's get going. Follow me.

Move along, come on, move along, please.

I don’t believe it, bacteria like this
simply don't exist.

Oh yes, we do, and here we are.

Just like I said,

the body's defenses aren't up to standard.

Look, Captain,
can you see them down there?

Diplococcus bacteria!

There are thousands. I think we'd best
split up and fast!

It is not working.

We don't have enough energy.

The antibodies are our last chance.

We have a way of beating this infection,

with outside help, by using antibiotics.
But call in our own reinforcements.

Attention! Attention all!

Bronchi infection by
diplococcus bacteria.

Onset of pneumonia.

Let's cure this. He's a big strong boy,
he will be fine.

But how did he get it?

Well, he overdid it.

In order to cope, the hormones
launched the use of the reserves.

And they were all used up,

as well as the defenses,

so germs managed to invade the body.

But luckily, we do have antibiotics.

Well, when can I have my tennis re-match?
