I giochi del diavolo (1981): Season 1, Episode 5 - Il diavolo nella bottiglia - full transcript
Based on the tale The Bottle Imp by Robert L. Stevenson.
Samoa, a night in 1980.
Stevenson tells an old Scottish fairy tale
to the inhabitants of the
island, transforming it for
them into one of his most
famous tales of the South Seas.
THE DEVIL IN THE BOTTLE
I had now come out of the
shadow of the Roman empire.
that has dominated
us all from the cradle.
With its ruins its monuments
whose laws
and literature besiege
us everywhere.
Full of prohibitions and constraints.
Now I could finally see in front
of me what they
could possibly be
men, whose fathers
had never read Virgil.
Nor had they ever been conquered by Caesar
Nor had they ever been
ruled by the wisdom of Gaius
or Papiniano
Suddenly
I had put myself beyond the friendly area
of the sister's tongues.
Where it is so easy to
remedy the curse of Babel.
And here.
Before me.
My new likes.
They sat
many as I imagine.
There was a man on the island of Hawaii.
Which I will call
Keawe.
Because he still lives.
and his name
must be kept secret.
This man
was poor,
brave and active.
He
could read and
write as a teacher.
And he was also
a sailor
top notch.
You are right to cry in this Kokua house
Yet I would give my head
so that you at least were happy.
Happy.
When you lived alone
in your shining house.
Saying "Keawe" on the island
was like saying "happy man"
Laughter and singing were on your lips.
Your face was as bright as the dawn.
Then you married poor Kokua.
And the good Lord knows what's
missing in her. But since that day
you
you didn't smile
Oh God!
What is wrong with me?
I thought I was beautiful
I knew I loved him.
What is wrong with me?
I cast this shadow
on my husband.
Poor Kokua
My poor dear child.
And I who, all this time,
had thought of saving you
Well.
You will know everything.
So at least you will
have pity on poor Keawe.
So you will understand
how much he loved you in the past.
To defy hell to have you.
And how much I still love you.
The poor condemned.
To still be able to smile at you
when I see you.
Once upon a time, Keawe
had been a first-rate sailor
He had traveled a long time
on the vapors of the islands.
And he even drove
A whaler on the Hamakua coast.
In the long run
It occurred to me to take a look
at your world and its foreign cities.
So he boarded a ship
to San Francisco
This is a beautiful city.
With a nice harbor.
It is full of rich and countless
people.
There is a hill all
covered with buildings.
"How beautiful these houses are"
Keawe thought to himself
And how happy those
who live there must be.
And they don't care
about tomorrow.
He always had
this thought in mind
Until he noticed a
man looking at him
through a transparent window.
So transparent
that he saw it
how you see a fish
in a pool among the rocks.
What?
What did you say?
I can't hear you.
My house is beautiful
Wouldn't you like
to see my rooms?
Truly, this is a splendid house.
If I lived in a house like this
I'd sing all day.
Why, then, you who
live here sigh like this?
There is no reason
so that you cannot have a house
similar to this one in all respects.
In all similar to this.
And more beautiful, if you wish
Do you have any money I suppose?
I have fifty dollars.
But a house like this will
cost more than fifty dollars.
I'm sorry you don't have more.
Because that might
bother you in the future.
But it will be yours
for fifty dollars.
The House?
The house no!
The bottle.
The bottle?
I will make you a confession
Although I appear to you
so rich and lucky.
All this luck of mine, this
house itself, and its garden.
They came out of a bottle
which is no bigger than a pint
Here you are!
This is the bottle.
Don't believe me?
Then try to break it
and see if you can!
This is very strange
Because it feels like glass
to the eye and to the touch.
In fact it is made of glass!
But his glass was made
from the fires of hell
And inside it
lives a little devil
And that shadow
that we see in there
is his.
At least it seems so.
Whoever buys this bottle
will have the devil under his control
All he wants, love
fame, money
Like this house.
A city.
Like this city. Everything.
Well, I have expressed the wish.
Napoleon had this bottle
And through it, he managed
to become the king of the world
but when he finally sold it, he fell in battle.
Because once sold
power and protection vanish
And, unless one is
happy with what he has,
evil comes to his master.
And you want to sell it?
I have everything I
want but I am getting old
There is one thing the devil can't do.
and that is extending your life
And it wouldn't be honest to hide it.
The bottle has a drawback
If a man
dies before selling it.
He has to burn in hell
Forever!
Of course.
Inconvenience issue.
It's clear.
No!
I don't want to be involved in it
I can live without a house.
Thank God.
But there is one thing I
don't want to deal with at all.
And that is to be damned.
Don't be so hasty in things
All you have to do is use
that devil power in moderation
and then sell it
as I did with you
And end life in comfort.
Well I noticed two things.
You sigh all the
time like a girl in love
This is the first thing
And as for the other
Sell this bottle
at a very economical price.
I told you because I sigh
it is because I fear
that my health is
weakening and
as you say yourself.
To die and go to hell
it's bad for anyone.
As for its cheap price
I must specify
the value of this bottle.
A long time ago
When the devil first brought it
to earth it was extremely rare
And it was sold to
the priest Gianni for the
first time in exchange
for millions of women.
The bottle, however, can
only be sold at a lower price
of the previous purchase.
If you sell it for as
much as you got it
it comes back to you again.
Like a carrier pigeon
Therefore
the cost
has kept reducing over many centuries
and the bottle is now
at a good price.
I bought it
from
one of my neighbors.
on this hill.
And I only paid it ninety dollars.
I could sell it for eighty-nine
dollars and ninety-nine cents
But not a penny more because
otherwise it would come back to me.
Speaking of this, there
are two drawbacks: the first
That's when you offer such an
extraordinary bottle for eighty dollars
people assume that you are joking.
Secondly.
Secondly...
Well but there is
no rush for that.
Just remember that
you have to get it
for minted money
Here we go! My boy.
Do not hesitate.
Don't delay
And how can I know if you are telling the truth?
First of all you can try it now.
Just give me the $ 50
Take the bottle
and you can wish for that money
back in your pocket right away.
If that doesn't happen
I give you my word
of honor that I will
break the contract
and I'll give you your money back
You are not deceiving me are you?
Am I fooling you? Of course not!
I am an honest person.
Good.
I will take it
I will take the risk.
Because that couldn't
do me any harm
Devil of the bottle
I want to get back
my fifty dollars.
Fifty.
Of course.
This is a wonderful bottle.
And now good morning you
my dear sir.
May the devil accompany you.
For me.
No no wait I don't
want to deal with
this bottle anymore..
Take your bottle back
You bought it for less than
I paid for it. Now it is yours
And I just want
to see you turn your back and leave.
When I was on the street with the
bottle under my arm I began to think.
If everything he told me
about this bottle is true.
I may have made a bad contract.
The first thing he did
was to count again
his money.
Forty seven.
Fourty eight.
Fourty nine.
Fifty.
The sum is exact.
Fifty dollars in American coins.
The streets in
that part of the city
were as clean
as a ship's deck.
And there were no passers-by.
I want to do another test.
And this too
it is the truth.
Back to the port
Keawe saw a shop
selling shells and clubs
of the wild islands.
Old pagan gods
Old coins.
Chinese and Japanese paintings.
And all sorts of things that
sailors carry in their traveling trunks.
He had an idea.
I'm offering you this
bottle for a hundred dollars.
And I'm offering you five dollars
for this bottle
wait wait.
What a hurry! wait.
Actually it is a curious bottle.
Glass of this kind was never
blown in human glassworks.
So strangely the colors
shine under the milky white.
And so strangely the
shadow moves within it.
After a little discussion
According to the manner of his fellow men.
The shopkeeper gave it to Keawe
sixty silver dollars.
Then he took the bottle
and put it on a board
in the middle of the shop window.
Well you know I
sold for sixty dollars
what I bought for fifty dollars.
Now I will know the truth
about something else.
So he went back aboard his ship.
and when he looked
inside his trunk
The bottle was already there.
And it had arrived
even before him.
Why are you staring at your trunk?
Keawe had a board mate
who called himself Lopaka.
Lopaka told him:
Why are you
staring at your trunk?
They were alone
on the forecastle
Keawe made him
promise to keep secret.
And he told him everything.
This is a very strange business.
I think you're going to
have trouble with this bottle
But one thing is clear
that you already know
these troubles.
And so you should enjoy
the benefits of the contract.
Decide what to have,
give the order,
and if everything
comes true as you wish,
I'll buy the bottle
in fact, I have the idea in mind
buy me a schooner 5
and go trading
between the islands
My idea, on the other hand, is another.
I wish I had a beautiful home.
And a garden ..
On the Konavi coast.
Where I was born.
Where the sun shines
through the door.
Flowers in the garden.
Glass on the windows.
Paintings on the walls.
Trinkets
and nice carpets.
For every verse similar to
the house I've been to today.
Good.
we take the bottle with us to Hawaii
and if everything turns out as you suppose
I'll buy the bottle
As I said.
Who?
The?
Your uncle!
My uncle?
How?
Don't you know?
No.
What happened?
You may have
heard only your uncle.
That good old man is dead.
And your cousin
that beautiful boy
That beautiful boy.
he drowned in the sea.
Keawe
Full of pain
starting to cry and moan
He forgot about the
bottle completely.
But Lopaka thought to himself
and after a while, as soon as
Keawe's pain subsided a little
He said:
I've been thinking
Didn't your uncle
have land in Hawaii?
in the district of Kau?
Not in Kau, they are on
the side of the mountains.
A little south of Hookena.
Those lands will be yours now.
I know it.
Do not complain now
rather, I have a doubt
What if this were opera
of the bottle?
The bottle!
Because, you see?
The land for your home is ready!
If so, it would be a very evil way
to serve me, to kill my relatives.
But it could be so!
Sure!
because that is precisely the place
where I saw my house with my mind's eye.
However, the house is not yet built
No, nor is it likely that it is!
Because although my uncle has
some coffee plants, kavavii and
bananas, this will not be enough
to make me live comfortably
and the rest of that land is black lava.
Yes, but I still have some doubts.
Let's go to the lawyer
Here you are.
As you see your uncle, he had become
enormously rich in the last few days.
This heap of money
clearly demonstrates this.
Here is the money for the house!
If you think about a new home
Here is the address
of an architect.
They tell me great things about.
On the walls
they will have to be hung
paintings with gold frames.
Paintings
of ships and men in battle
The most beautiful women
paintings of singular places
How many ornaments you have
will have to be extraordinarily varied
Clocks with music
boxes, accordions,
little men who move their heads.
The books full of pictures.
Valuable weapons
from all over the world.
The most elegant jigsaw puzzles
To fill the hours of a lonely man
Time went by
and the architect told us
that the house was ready.
Lopaka and I went to Kona
to see the house to see if
everything had been done
right according to the
thought that was in my mind.
After visiting everything
we sat on the porch.
So.
Everything is as you wish.
It's better than what I dreamed of.
Words are not enough.
I am full of satisfaction.
"I am full of satisfaction"
Yup.
There is one more thing to consider,
it is possible that all
of this is a natural thing
and that the bottle demon
has nothing to do with it.
Exactly!
If you were to buy the bottle
without getting the schooner
I would have put my
hand on the fire for nothing.
I gave you my word, I know,
however, I think you shouldn't
deny me another proof.
I have sworn I will no
longer receive favors.
I've already gone far enough.
It is not a favor
that I am thinking
I just want to see
the devil himself.
Thing?
There is nothing
to be gained and
therefore there
is no shame at all.
If I could see the devil
even just once
I would finally be
sure of this matter.
So I'm begging you
to let me see the devil
and after, here's the money!
I'll buy the bottle.
There is only one thing I'm afraid of
The devil could be
very ugly to look at.
And if you put your
eyes on it once.
You may completely
stop wanting the bottle.
I am a man who keeps his word
Very good.
Then I'm curious too.
Here is the bottle.
This is where my money is.
Here we go!
Come outside!
let us take a look
at you mister devil.
I am a man of my word.
and it's good that it is,
otherwise I would not
touch this bottle with my foot.
So I'll have my schooner.
and a dollar or two for me.
then I'll get rid of this
demon as quickly as possible.
Because, to tell you the whole truth,
the sight of him knocked me down.
Lopaka
I know it is night.
That the streets are dark.
and that the path near the graves is a
dangerous place to cross at such a late hour
but I confess to you
that since I saw that little
face, I will not be able to eat
to sleep
to pray
until she is away from me.
and therefore I beg you.
Go away!
Many would take it badly,
mostly because I'm doing you
such a big favor
in keeping my word
and buy the bottle.
And what about the rest
the darkness and the road
along the graves must be ten times
more dangerous for a man
with such a sin on his conscience
and such a bottle under his arm.
But for my part, I'm so terrified myself,
that I don't have the heart to blame you.
I'm leaving.
I pray to God you can be
happy in your new home.
and I'm lucky with my schooner.
And that you can
both go to heaven.
In spite of the
devil in the bottle
So Lopaka went down the mountain,
and I remained on the balcony
to listen to the beating of the irons
of the horse.
And look at the lantern
descend brightly along the path
Along the cliff of the caves
where the ancient dead are buried.
And all the time I was
trembling and praying.
I was praying for my friend
And I thanked God
to have made it out alive.
But the next day
came very bright
And Keawe
looking at his delightful house
he forgot the fear.
Days went by
and he was happy.
in perpetual joy.
And when someone passed
he came in to look at the rooms
and the paintings
The fame of the house spread
far and wide.
And throughout Kona they
called it "the big house."
And sometimes
"the shining house".
Because Keawe
had a Chinese waiter
that every day he dusted
and he polished.
Glasses, crystals.
Silverware.
Gilding.
He made these objects
transparencies and
bright as the morning
One day Keawe
went as far as Kailua
To visit certain friends of him.
There, he was well received.
But the next morning
he left suddenly.
And he rode fast.
Because he wanted to see
his beautiful house again.
However
the coming night
was the night
where the dead
of the ancient days
wander around Kona.
And he already got involved
in the things of the devil.
he was even more cautious
to meet the dead.
Therefore,
riding fast towards the
beach house of Honaunau
He noticed a woman
who was walking on the seashore.
I thought
I thought I knew
everyone in this country.
Where do you come from?
I don't know you
I am Kokua
daughter of Kiano
and just got back from Oahu.
Who are you?
I'll tell you who I am shortly.
Not now.
Because I have one thing in mind
and if you only knew who I am
you may have heard of me
and you wouldn't give
me an honest answer.
First tell me one thing.
You are married?
You're asking questions now.
And you are married.
In truth I am not.
I never thought I was
until now.
But here is clearly
the simple truth.
I met you now on
the edge of the street.
And I have seen your eyes
that are like stars.
And my heart came
to you as fast as a bird.
And now if you
don't want to hear
about me tell me
and I'll go to my house
But if you think I'm no worse
than any other young man
Please tell me
And I will come to your father.
And he'll talk
about the two of us.
You are welcome.
Keawe
But tell me
What on earth induced you
to leave your shining home
to come and honor
the poor hut
of a fisherman.
You are Keawe.
The master of the big house.
Yup.
I didn't want to tell
you right away who I
was because everyone
knows I have a nice home.
And I was afraid you would
think too much about the house.
And too little to the man who loves you.
Now you know everything about me.
And if you want me
to go away forever
say it now
and I will go.
No!
No?
Wake up!! Chinese sleepyhead!
Your master is back!
And he is happy!
Do you want to know it?
I am at the peak of satisfaction
Life couldn't be better.
and everything around
me declines for the worst.
Go get me a bath
I will bathe with hot and cold water!
And I'll just sleep one
last time in my bed.
In my bridal bed
All of you are now wondering what
the hell happened to poor Keawe.
Certainly if he also asked
Kokua.
And with even more
trepidation than yours
because not only
curiosity urged her to know.
But also
and even more,
her woman's heart
tenderly in love.
Truth was this.
While I washed myself in my tub
I had seen on my skin
something like a patch
of lichen on the rock.
Leprosy !!
Are you all right, sir?
Yup.
Do you need something?
Go to sleep!!!
I could leave my home
Adapting to leaving my friends
To leave Hawaii
The home of my fathers
with a lot of courage
With much courage
go to Molokaixii
near the cliffs
to live there
with lepers.
You could live for years
owner of the shining house.
without anyone knowing
about your illness.
What do I care about living?
Where to live from
if I have to lose Kokua.
You could marry Kokua as you are
Many in your condition would
Because they have crazy souls!
I love Kokua as a real man
and I don't want to hurt her.
nor expose it to any danger.
For all the devils!
The bottle!
That bottle is a scary thing!
And scary is the devil
and it is terrible to
risk the flames of hell.
But what other hope do I have
to cure myself and marry Kokua?
Oh Kokua, the queen of my heart
And I'll risk my soul
to earn.
And he rode
along the cliff of the tombs
It was raining. His
horse rode heavily
he looked up at the
black mouths of the caves.
And he envied the
dead who slept there.
That they had done
away with the trouble.
At dawn
he boarded a boat
to Honolulu
When he got there
he immediately began
to inquire about Lopaka.
They told him that
he had bought a schooner
and he had ventured to distant islands
But they told him.
that if he wanted more
precise information about him
he had to ask a friend
A man he had suddenly become
very rich.
You
Are you friends with Lopaka?
Lopaka?
Lopaka one day
bought from me
a certain item of merchandise.
Which I told me you might
be able to track me down.
I
I'm not saying I don't
understand you mister...
Keawe
Although this is a
very bad business to
rush.
You can be sure that I
am not about anything.
Yet I guess
If you want to
go to via Veritania
I am sure that you will be able
to have some more sure news.
Like this.
Keawe went there.
He went everywhere.
Finding everywhere
beautiful new houses
carriages
beautiful clothes.
and everywhere men
in great contentment.
Although as soon
as I mentioned my
business to them their
faces clouded over.
There is no doubt that
they are on the right track.
These new clothes.
These carriages
they are gifts from the little devil
And these happy faces
they are faces of people
who have had their profit.
They definitely got
rid of the damn thing.
When I see pale cheeks.
And I will hear sighs.
Then I'll be
close to the bottle.
And so in the end
it happened.
Here it is certainly.
I am here
for the bottle.
The bottle
The bottle
I am here
to buy
the bottle.
To your family.
So
I came
to buy
the bottle.
What's the price?
The price is much
lowered by your time sir...
Keawe
Keawe.
Good.
Much less will I
have to pay for it.
How much did it cost you?
Two cents
What? Two cents?
But then you can only sell it
for 1 cent and the one who...
he who buys it will no
longer be able to resell it.
The devil in the bottle will
stay with him until his death.
And when he dies
he will go to the
red core of hell!
For God's sake! Buy it!
I'll give you all my
luck and more, mister...
I was crazy.
I was crazy.
when I bought it at that price.
I had stolen money from my shop.
I was lost
I should have gone to jail!
Poor man!
You have risked your soul
in such a desperate adventure
And just to avoid.
the punishment
Your own fault
And you think he can avoid me.
But I do!
Here's 5 cents.
Give me the bottle! And the rest
I am sure you have it ready already.
As soon as my hands had
tightened the neck of the bottle.
I expressed a wish to be healed.
And immediately when
I got to the inn room.
And I undressed
in front of the mirror.
My skin was healthy
like that of a child
You did this for me.
So what do I care
about everything else.
Nevertheless...
when I think of the
eternal fire I cannot win!
Don't say it !!
No man can be
lost for loving Kokua
You loved me and gave your soul.
And do you think I
won't die in return?
To save you.
Ah! my dear, you could die a hundred
times and what good would that do?
but to leave me alone until the
time of my damnation comes?
You do not know anything!
You do not know anything.
I was educated in
a Honolulu school
and I tell you
I will save my husband
What does this cent thing mean?
Not all of the world is
American. In England they have a
coin they call farthing which
is worth about half a cent.
Ah! Pity! This does not solve the
problem, because the buyer would be damned
And we won't find anyone
so brave
like my Keawe.
But then there is France
there they have a small
coin they call a cent and
of these it takes five to
make a cent more or less.
More or less.
We couldn't do better.
Come on, Keawe. Let's
go to the French islands,
let's go to Tahiti, quick!
How ships can take us.
We have 4 cents.
3 cents, 2 cents
1 cent. Four
trading possibilities.
And we will be two.
To resolve the matter
Let go of Keawe thoughts
kiss Me
Kokua will defend you.
God! How could I have thought you wanted to
punish me for marrying a woman like Kokua?
When we are in Papeete we will immediately
rent a house very similar to this one
great pomp of money.
And we will show up
with horses and carriages
You will do this easily
thanks to the bottle
because whatever we
need we will turn to the devil.
For the money needed.
At this rate we will soon be
in sight throughout the city
so it will be enough to find the
right opportunity to sell the bottle.
it is a problematic business of
course but there is a solution.
In front of banquets laden
with abundant libations
and good music, souls are
generally better disposed.
We're going to have a big party.
The party, I said, was a good
opportunity to close the bottle deal.
On the other hand unfortunately
the deal, consider that it
was not easy to propose,
why people
or he didn't believe
the whole thing
or laughed,
I gave more importance
to the darker part.
His face was very serious.
And they moved away
from Keawe and Kokua
as from people who
dealt with the devil.
Instead of gaining ground
with that party
The two noticed that everyone
avoided them.
Catholics made
the sign of the cross
and they all began by mutual
agreement to refuse their courtesies.
Even the children ran away.
A cloud.
A cloud
fell
on their souls
God! How weak and careless I have been!
It is he, not I, who
is in eternal danger;
It was he not I who took
the curse upon himself.
For me.
For a creature
of so little value.
Of so little help
and now he sees the
flames of hell so close to him.
On the contrary, he feels the smoke
lying out there in the
wind and the moonlight.
I have been so poor in spirit that I
have not yet realized what my duty was
or even having noticed it
before I turned away from it?
But now I take my
soul in my hands
now I say goodbye to the white steps of Heaven
and the faces of my friends waiting for me,
A love for a love
and mine is equal to that of Keawe!
Old man
would you do me a favor?
Like a stranger to another, like an old man to a
young woman, would you help a daughter from Hawaii?
So you are the witch
coming from the eight islands.
And also my old soul
you want to ensnare.
But I have heard of you.
And I challenge your malice.
I will sit next to you.
Kokua said - and I'll tell you
how things went.
And so it was decided.
He had such honest eyes
and he let her.
So she sat down next to him.
She told him the story of Keawe
from start to finish.
And now I'm his wife
Which he bought with
the salvation of her soul.
What can I do?
if I went to him myself and
offered to buy it,
he would refuse.
But if you go there he will
give it to you with great joy.
I will wait for you here.
You'll buy it for four cents
and I'll buy it back for three.
And the Lord give
strength to a poor girl!
If you were in bad faith,
I believe that God
would strike you down.
He would do it!
You are sure that he would.
I couldn't be that mean.
God wouldn't allow it.
Give me four cents.
Wait for me here.
I followed your orders.
I left your husband
crying like a baby.
He will sleep easily tonight.
He takes the bottle.
Now my husband
it's your turn to sleep.
And when you wake up it will
be your turn to sing and laugh.
But for your poor Kokua
no more singing, no sleep
nor pleasure.
both on earth and in heaven.
He looked like a good old man
But you can't judge
by appearances.
What an old fool.
What an old sinner.
why did the old man want the
bottle if he wasn't
a hardened sinner?
Don't speak like that husband!
His intentions could
have been good.
Nonsense!
He was an old rogue!
I tell you! and
an old donkey too
because the bottle was
already difficult to sell for 4 cents
and at 3? it will be impossible!
There is no longer enough margin!
the thing begins
to smell of burning
and whoever has that
bottle now will take it to hell.
Keawe !!
Isn't it a terrible thing to save
oneself by condemning another?
I guess I couldn't laugh.
I would be humiliated by it.
I would be full of melancholy.
I would pray
for the poor man who owns it.
You can fill yourself with
melancholy as much as you like.
A good wife doesn't think so.
If you cared about me,
you'd sit there full of shame.
Kokua
do not Cry!
Maybe you were right.
Too much joy upset me.
But you will see.
Everything will be better now.
We will forget the bad hours spent
on the island and the tears we shed.
Prepare your bags!
We will leave today.
No!
why
not?
Didn't you want to see your friends again?
What about our
beautiful shining home?
Yes, of course.
But let's not start right away-
Not now.
Why?
With the bottle concern we
haven't seen anything yet.
Of Tahiti.
The wise island.
You are right.
I hadn't thought of it.
Soon
let's go for a nice ride
in the streets right away.
My husband.
I am not feeling well.
I'm depressed.
Forgive me.
I can't have fun
Tell me
You're still thinking
about that damn old man!
Tell me you want me to
be ashamed of being happy.
This is your fidelity.
This is your affection.
Your husband just saved
himself from eternal damnation
that he faced for her sake, and her?
She can't have fun.
Kokua
You have a disloyal heart.
And I'm going to have fun alone.
Hey you!
You are rich!
You always said that!
All evening you kept saying
you're rich!
You have a bottle
or some such nonsense
it is true! I'm rich
And now I'm going to get
some money from my wife.
she is the one who holds the money.
A bad idea this.
Friend.
Which idea?
Never give your
money to a woman!
Why?
Women are fake!
They are all fake!
They are all false.
False.
keep an eye on it.
Friend.
I really wouldn't be
surprised that she was fake
Why else would she be so
dejected after my release?
I will show you who I am!
I am not a man
to be made fun of.
I'll catch you in the act.
The contract with the
old man wasn't all good!
I have to make sure of this right away.
Kokua
Kokua
I had fallen asleep
I've been drinking
and partying all day
I have been with cheerful companions.
I just came to get some money.
Then I'll go back to
drink and party with them.
You are right to use your money.
My husband
I do everything well.
Then she is the one who bought it
Today I have spoken to
you inappropriate words.
Now I return to have fun
with my cheerful companions
and I will find more pleasure in the glass
if you forgive me.
I was asking for only a kind word!
Let one of us never think badly of the each other.
What happened?
it happens that my wife has the bottle!
if you don't help me get it back, there
will be no more money or wine tonight.
But what bottle?
The bottle!
You don't mean to say
That you were serious
about that bottle.
Look me in the face!
Do I look like a joke to you?
It's true. You seem serious to me
like a ghost.
Good!
here is the two cents. Go to my wife
in the house. Offer her this money for
the bottle which (if I'm not entirely
mistaken) she will give you instantly
Then come back to me
and I'll buy it back for 1 cent.
Whatever you do
Don't tell her you're
coming from me.
Friend.
I wonder.
Are you cheating on me?
If so, she will not harm you.
If you doubt me
you can try now.
As soon as you are out of the house
you wish to have your
pockets full of money
Or a bottle of the best rum
or whatever else you like in short
you will see the power of the thing.
Very good.
Great friend.
I'll try.
But...
Remember.
If you are kidding.
I will joke with you.
later.
With this.
Thus, the pirate
went off into the night.
And Keawe stood still
and he waited.
He was steadfast.
And he did not fail in his intentions.
Even if his soul
was bitter with despair
Here we go,
take a seat.
It seemed a long time that she had to wait
Before hearing again
the steps
advancing in the dark of the avenue.
"So give me that
bottle," Keawe murmured
"What bottle? This?" answered
the pirate with indignant satanic.
"You know very well which
bottle I'm talking about"
Keawe said
You have it under your cloak.
I see it!
Get your hands off!!
"if you take a step closer"
If you take a step closer
I'll cut your belly
You thought you could have me
take the chestnuts
out of the fire
it is not true?
What do you mean ??
What I mean?
I mean...
that this...
This is a discreet bottle.
Here's what I mean!
How I got it for
two cents.
I will never be able to understand it.
But what I guarantee you.
is that you
will never
get it back for 1 cent.
But whoever has that
bottle goes to hell !!!
We all have to go there!
and this bottle
it's for that trip.
The best
company
I've found so far.
In your interest please sell it!
Keawe shouted
I don't care what you say
answered the pirate
Cheers to you!
and goodnight to you!
Friend!
So the bottle finally
leaves our story..
And as me.
Which is granted to me.
With all my trusty.
Share
the tombs
Where they freeze
with their deeds.
And Kokua?
Keawe ran to
Kokua light as the wind
And great was their joy that night
And great ever since
it was the peace of their days
In the big shining house.
* Subtitles created by Blueam *
Stevenson tells an old Scottish fairy tale
to the inhabitants of the
island, transforming it for
them into one of his most
famous tales of the South Seas.
THE DEVIL IN THE BOTTLE
I had now come out of the
shadow of the Roman empire.
that has dominated
us all from the cradle.
With its ruins its monuments
whose laws
and literature besiege
us everywhere.
Full of prohibitions and constraints.
Now I could finally see in front
of me what they
could possibly be
men, whose fathers
had never read Virgil.
Nor had they ever been conquered by Caesar
Nor had they ever been
ruled by the wisdom of Gaius
or Papiniano
Suddenly
I had put myself beyond the friendly area
of the sister's tongues.
Where it is so easy to
remedy the curse of Babel.
And here.
Before me.
My new likes.
They sat
many as I imagine.
There was a man on the island of Hawaii.
Which I will call
Keawe.
Because he still lives.
and his name
must be kept secret.
This man
was poor,
brave and active.
He
could read and
write as a teacher.
And he was also
a sailor
top notch.
You are right to cry in this Kokua house
Yet I would give my head
so that you at least were happy.
Happy.
When you lived alone
in your shining house.
Saying "Keawe" on the island
was like saying "happy man"
Laughter and singing were on your lips.
Your face was as bright as the dawn.
Then you married poor Kokua.
And the good Lord knows what's
missing in her. But since that day
you
you didn't smile
Oh God!
What is wrong with me?
I thought I was beautiful
I knew I loved him.
What is wrong with me?
I cast this shadow
on my husband.
Poor Kokua
My poor dear child.
And I who, all this time,
had thought of saving you
Well.
You will know everything.
So at least you will
have pity on poor Keawe.
So you will understand
how much he loved you in the past.
To defy hell to have you.
And how much I still love you.
The poor condemned.
To still be able to smile at you
when I see you.
Once upon a time, Keawe
had been a first-rate sailor
He had traveled a long time
on the vapors of the islands.
And he even drove
A whaler on the Hamakua coast.
In the long run
It occurred to me to take a look
at your world and its foreign cities.
So he boarded a ship
to San Francisco
This is a beautiful city.
With a nice harbor.
It is full of rich and countless
people.
There is a hill all
covered with buildings.
"How beautiful these houses are"
Keawe thought to himself
And how happy those
who live there must be.
And they don't care
about tomorrow.
He always had
this thought in mind
Until he noticed a
man looking at him
through a transparent window.
So transparent
that he saw it
how you see a fish
in a pool among the rocks.
What?
What did you say?
I can't hear you.
My house is beautiful
Wouldn't you like
to see my rooms?
Truly, this is a splendid house.
If I lived in a house like this
I'd sing all day.
Why, then, you who
live here sigh like this?
There is no reason
so that you cannot have a house
similar to this one in all respects.
In all similar to this.
And more beautiful, if you wish
Do you have any money I suppose?
I have fifty dollars.
But a house like this will
cost more than fifty dollars.
I'm sorry you don't have more.
Because that might
bother you in the future.
But it will be yours
for fifty dollars.
The House?
The house no!
The bottle.
The bottle?
I will make you a confession
Although I appear to you
so rich and lucky.
All this luck of mine, this
house itself, and its garden.
They came out of a bottle
which is no bigger than a pint
Here you are!
This is the bottle.
Don't believe me?
Then try to break it
and see if you can!
This is very strange
Because it feels like glass
to the eye and to the touch.
In fact it is made of glass!
But his glass was made
from the fires of hell
And inside it
lives a little devil
And that shadow
that we see in there
is his.
At least it seems so.
Whoever buys this bottle
will have the devil under his control
All he wants, love
fame, money
Like this house.
A city.
Like this city. Everything.
Well, I have expressed the wish.
Napoleon had this bottle
And through it, he managed
to become the king of the world
but when he finally sold it, he fell in battle.
Because once sold
power and protection vanish
And, unless one is
happy with what he has,
evil comes to his master.
And you want to sell it?
I have everything I
want but I am getting old
There is one thing the devil can't do.
and that is extending your life
And it wouldn't be honest to hide it.
The bottle has a drawback
If a man
dies before selling it.
He has to burn in hell
Forever!
Of course.
Inconvenience issue.
It's clear.
No!
I don't want to be involved in it
I can live without a house.
Thank God.
But there is one thing I
don't want to deal with at all.
And that is to be damned.
Don't be so hasty in things
All you have to do is use
that devil power in moderation
and then sell it
as I did with you
And end life in comfort.
Well I noticed two things.
You sigh all the
time like a girl in love
This is the first thing
And as for the other
Sell this bottle
at a very economical price.
I told you because I sigh
it is because I fear
that my health is
weakening and
as you say yourself.
To die and go to hell
it's bad for anyone.
As for its cheap price
I must specify
the value of this bottle.
A long time ago
When the devil first brought it
to earth it was extremely rare
And it was sold to
the priest Gianni for the
first time in exchange
for millions of women.
The bottle, however, can
only be sold at a lower price
of the previous purchase.
If you sell it for as
much as you got it
it comes back to you again.
Like a carrier pigeon
Therefore
the cost
has kept reducing over many centuries
and the bottle is now
at a good price.
I bought it
from
one of my neighbors.
on this hill.
And I only paid it ninety dollars.
I could sell it for eighty-nine
dollars and ninety-nine cents
But not a penny more because
otherwise it would come back to me.
Speaking of this, there
are two drawbacks: the first
That's when you offer such an
extraordinary bottle for eighty dollars
people assume that you are joking.
Secondly.
Secondly...
Well but there is
no rush for that.
Just remember that
you have to get it
for minted money
Here we go! My boy.
Do not hesitate.
Don't delay
And how can I know if you are telling the truth?
First of all you can try it now.
Just give me the $ 50
Take the bottle
and you can wish for that money
back in your pocket right away.
If that doesn't happen
I give you my word
of honor that I will
break the contract
and I'll give you your money back
You are not deceiving me are you?
Am I fooling you? Of course not!
I am an honest person.
Good.
I will take it
I will take the risk.
Because that couldn't
do me any harm
Devil of the bottle
I want to get back
my fifty dollars.
Fifty.
Of course.
This is a wonderful bottle.
And now good morning you
my dear sir.
May the devil accompany you.
For me.
No no wait I don't
want to deal with
this bottle anymore..
Take your bottle back
You bought it for less than
I paid for it. Now it is yours
And I just want
to see you turn your back and leave.
When I was on the street with the
bottle under my arm I began to think.
If everything he told me
about this bottle is true.
I may have made a bad contract.
The first thing he did
was to count again
his money.
Forty seven.
Fourty eight.
Fourty nine.
Fifty.
The sum is exact.
Fifty dollars in American coins.
The streets in
that part of the city
were as clean
as a ship's deck.
And there were no passers-by.
I want to do another test.
And this too
it is the truth.
Back to the port
Keawe saw a shop
selling shells and clubs
of the wild islands.
Old pagan gods
Old coins.
Chinese and Japanese paintings.
And all sorts of things that
sailors carry in their traveling trunks.
He had an idea.
I'm offering you this
bottle for a hundred dollars.
And I'm offering you five dollars
for this bottle
wait wait.
What a hurry! wait.
Actually it is a curious bottle.
Glass of this kind was never
blown in human glassworks.
So strangely the colors
shine under the milky white.
And so strangely the
shadow moves within it.
After a little discussion
According to the manner of his fellow men.
The shopkeeper gave it to Keawe
sixty silver dollars.
Then he took the bottle
and put it on a board
in the middle of the shop window.
Well you know I
sold for sixty dollars
what I bought for fifty dollars.
Now I will know the truth
about something else.
So he went back aboard his ship.
and when he looked
inside his trunk
The bottle was already there.
And it had arrived
even before him.
Why are you staring at your trunk?
Keawe had a board mate
who called himself Lopaka.
Lopaka told him:
Why are you
staring at your trunk?
They were alone
on the forecastle
Keawe made him
promise to keep secret.
And he told him everything.
This is a very strange business.
I think you're going to
have trouble with this bottle
But one thing is clear
that you already know
these troubles.
And so you should enjoy
the benefits of the contract.
Decide what to have,
give the order,
and if everything
comes true as you wish,
I'll buy the bottle
in fact, I have the idea in mind
buy me a schooner 5
and go trading
between the islands
My idea, on the other hand, is another.
I wish I had a beautiful home.
And a garden ..
On the Konavi coast.
Where I was born.
Where the sun shines
through the door.
Flowers in the garden.
Glass on the windows.
Paintings on the walls.
Trinkets
and nice carpets.
For every verse similar to
the house I've been to today.
Good.
we take the bottle with us to Hawaii
and if everything turns out as you suppose
I'll buy the bottle
As I said.
Who?
The?
Your uncle!
My uncle?
How?
Don't you know?
No.
What happened?
You may have
heard only your uncle.
That good old man is dead.
And your cousin
that beautiful boy
That beautiful boy.
he drowned in the sea.
Keawe
Full of pain
starting to cry and moan
He forgot about the
bottle completely.
But Lopaka thought to himself
and after a while, as soon as
Keawe's pain subsided a little
He said:
I've been thinking
Didn't your uncle
have land in Hawaii?
in the district of Kau?
Not in Kau, they are on
the side of the mountains.
A little south of Hookena.
Those lands will be yours now.
I know it.
Do not complain now
rather, I have a doubt
What if this were opera
of the bottle?
The bottle!
Because, you see?
The land for your home is ready!
If so, it would be a very evil way
to serve me, to kill my relatives.
But it could be so!
Sure!
because that is precisely the place
where I saw my house with my mind's eye.
However, the house is not yet built
No, nor is it likely that it is!
Because although my uncle has
some coffee plants, kavavii and
bananas, this will not be enough
to make me live comfortably
and the rest of that land is black lava.
Yes, but I still have some doubts.
Let's go to the lawyer
Here you are.
As you see your uncle, he had become
enormously rich in the last few days.
This heap of money
clearly demonstrates this.
Here is the money for the house!
If you think about a new home
Here is the address
of an architect.
They tell me great things about.
On the walls
they will have to be hung
paintings with gold frames.
Paintings
of ships and men in battle
The most beautiful women
paintings of singular places
How many ornaments you have
will have to be extraordinarily varied
Clocks with music
boxes, accordions,
little men who move their heads.
The books full of pictures.
Valuable weapons
from all over the world.
The most elegant jigsaw puzzles
To fill the hours of a lonely man
Time went by
and the architect told us
that the house was ready.
Lopaka and I went to Kona
to see the house to see if
everything had been done
right according to the
thought that was in my mind.
After visiting everything
we sat on the porch.
So.
Everything is as you wish.
It's better than what I dreamed of.
Words are not enough.
I am full of satisfaction.
"I am full of satisfaction"
Yup.
There is one more thing to consider,
it is possible that all
of this is a natural thing
and that the bottle demon
has nothing to do with it.
Exactly!
If you were to buy the bottle
without getting the schooner
I would have put my
hand on the fire for nothing.
I gave you my word, I know,
however, I think you shouldn't
deny me another proof.
I have sworn I will no
longer receive favors.
I've already gone far enough.
It is not a favor
that I am thinking
I just want to see
the devil himself.
Thing?
There is nothing
to be gained and
therefore there
is no shame at all.
If I could see the devil
even just once
I would finally be
sure of this matter.
So I'm begging you
to let me see the devil
and after, here's the money!
I'll buy the bottle.
There is only one thing I'm afraid of
The devil could be
very ugly to look at.
And if you put your
eyes on it once.
You may completely
stop wanting the bottle.
I am a man who keeps his word
Very good.
Then I'm curious too.
Here is the bottle.
This is where my money is.
Here we go!
Come outside!
let us take a look
at you mister devil.
I am a man of my word.
and it's good that it is,
otherwise I would not
touch this bottle with my foot.
So I'll have my schooner.
and a dollar or two for me.
then I'll get rid of this
demon as quickly as possible.
Because, to tell you the whole truth,
the sight of him knocked me down.
Lopaka
I know it is night.
That the streets are dark.
and that the path near the graves is a
dangerous place to cross at such a late hour
but I confess to you
that since I saw that little
face, I will not be able to eat
to sleep
to pray
until she is away from me.
and therefore I beg you.
Go away!
Many would take it badly,
mostly because I'm doing you
such a big favor
in keeping my word
and buy the bottle.
And what about the rest
the darkness and the road
along the graves must be ten times
more dangerous for a man
with such a sin on his conscience
and such a bottle under his arm.
But for my part, I'm so terrified myself,
that I don't have the heart to blame you.
I'm leaving.
I pray to God you can be
happy in your new home.
and I'm lucky with my schooner.
And that you can
both go to heaven.
In spite of the
devil in the bottle
So Lopaka went down the mountain,
and I remained on the balcony
to listen to the beating of the irons
of the horse.
And look at the lantern
descend brightly along the path
Along the cliff of the caves
where the ancient dead are buried.
And all the time I was
trembling and praying.
I was praying for my friend
And I thanked God
to have made it out alive.
But the next day
came very bright
And Keawe
looking at his delightful house
he forgot the fear.
Days went by
and he was happy.
in perpetual joy.
And when someone passed
he came in to look at the rooms
and the paintings
The fame of the house spread
far and wide.
And throughout Kona they
called it "the big house."
And sometimes
"the shining house".
Because Keawe
had a Chinese waiter
that every day he dusted
and he polished.
Glasses, crystals.
Silverware.
Gilding.
He made these objects
transparencies and
bright as the morning
One day Keawe
went as far as Kailua
To visit certain friends of him.
There, he was well received.
But the next morning
he left suddenly.
And he rode fast.
Because he wanted to see
his beautiful house again.
However
the coming night
was the night
where the dead
of the ancient days
wander around Kona.
And he already got involved
in the things of the devil.
he was even more cautious
to meet the dead.
Therefore,
riding fast towards the
beach house of Honaunau
He noticed a woman
who was walking on the seashore.
I thought
I thought I knew
everyone in this country.
Where do you come from?
I don't know you
I am Kokua
daughter of Kiano
and just got back from Oahu.
Who are you?
I'll tell you who I am shortly.
Not now.
Because I have one thing in mind
and if you only knew who I am
you may have heard of me
and you wouldn't give
me an honest answer.
First tell me one thing.
You are married?
You're asking questions now.
And you are married.
In truth I am not.
I never thought I was
until now.
But here is clearly
the simple truth.
I met you now on
the edge of the street.
And I have seen your eyes
that are like stars.
And my heart came
to you as fast as a bird.
And now if you
don't want to hear
about me tell me
and I'll go to my house
But if you think I'm no worse
than any other young man
Please tell me
And I will come to your father.
And he'll talk
about the two of us.
You are welcome.
Keawe
But tell me
What on earth induced you
to leave your shining home
to come and honor
the poor hut
of a fisherman.
You are Keawe.
The master of the big house.
Yup.
I didn't want to tell
you right away who I
was because everyone
knows I have a nice home.
And I was afraid you would
think too much about the house.
And too little to the man who loves you.
Now you know everything about me.
And if you want me
to go away forever
say it now
and I will go.
No!
No?
Wake up!! Chinese sleepyhead!
Your master is back!
And he is happy!
Do you want to know it?
I am at the peak of satisfaction
Life couldn't be better.
and everything around
me declines for the worst.
Go get me a bath
I will bathe with hot and cold water!
And I'll just sleep one
last time in my bed.
In my bridal bed
All of you are now wondering what
the hell happened to poor Keawe.
Certainly if he also asked
Kokua.
And with even more
trepidation than yours
because not only
curiosity urged her to know.
But also
and even more,
her woman's heart
tenderly in love.
Truth was this.
While I washed myself in my tub
I had seen on my skin
something like a patch
of lichen on the rock.
Leprosy !!
Are you all right, sir?
Yup.
Do you need something?
Go to sleep!!!
I could leave my home
Adapting to leaving my friends
To leave Hawaii
The home of my fathers
with a lot of courage
With much courage
go to Molokaixii
near the cliffs
to live there
with lepers.
You could live for years
owner of the shining house.
without anyone knowing
about your illness.
What do I care about living?
Where to live from
if I have to lose Kokua.
You could marry Kokua as you are
Many in your condition would
Because they have crazy souls!
I love Kokua as a real man
and I don't want to hurt her.
nor expose it to any danger.
For all the devils!
The bottle!
That bottle is a scary thing!
And scary is the devil
and it is terrible to
risk the flames of hell.
But what other hope do I have
to cure myself and marry Kokua?
Oh Kokua, the queen of my heart
And I'll risk my soul
to earn.
And he rode
along the cliff of the tombs
It was raining. His
horse rode heavily
he looked up at the
black mouths of the caves.
And he envied the
dead who slept there.
That they had done
away with the trouble.
At dawn
he boarded a boat
to Honolulu
When he got there
he immediately began
to inquire about Lopaka.
They told him that
he had bought a schooner
and he had ventured to distant islands
But they told him.
that if he wanted more
precise information about him
he had to ask a friend
A man he had suddenly become
very rich.
You
Are you friends with Lopaka?
Lopaka?
Lopaka one day
bought from me
a certain item of merchandise.
Which I told me you might
be able to track me down.
I
I'm not saying I don't
understand you mister...
Keawe
Although this is a
very bad business to
rush.
You can be sure that I
am not about anything.
Yet I guess
If you want to
go to via Veritania
I am sure that you will be able
to have some more sure news.
Like this.
Keawe went there.
He went everywhere.
Finding everywhere
beautiful new houses
carriages
beautiful clothes.
and everywhere men
in great contentment.
Although as soon
as I mentioned my
business to them their
faces clouded over.
There is no doubt that
they are on the right track.
These new clothes.
These carriages
they are gifts from the little devil
And these happy faces
they are faces of people
who have had their profit.
They definitely got
rid of the damn thing.
When I see pale cheeks.
And I will hear sighs.
Then I'll be
close to the bottle.
And so in the end
it happened.
Here it is certainly.
I am here
for the bottle.
The bottle
The bottle
I am here
to buy
the bottle.
To your family.
So
I came
to buy
the bottle.
What's the price?
The price is much
lowered by your time sir...
Keawe
Keawe.
Good.
Much less will I
have to pay for it.
How much did it cost you?
Two cents
What? Two cents?
But then you can only sell it
for 1 cent and the one who...
he who buys it will no
longer be able to resell it.
The devil in the bottle will
stay with him until his death.
And when he dies
he will go to the
red core of hell!
For God's sake! Buy it!
I'll give you all my
luck and more, mister...
I was crazy.
I was crazy.
when I bought it at that price.
I had stolen money from my shop.
I was lost
I should have gone to jail!
Poor man!
You have risked your soul
in such a desperate adventure
And just to avoid.
the punishment
Your own fault
And you think he can avoid me.
But I do!
Here's 5 cents.
Give me the bottle! And the rest
I am sure you have it ready already.
As soon as my hands had
tightened the neck of the bottle.
I expressed a wish to be healed.
And immediately when
I got to the inn room.
And I undressed
in front of the mirror.
My skin was healthy
like that of a child
You did this for me.
So what do I care
about everything else.
Nevertheless...
when I think of the
eternal fire I cannot win!
Don't say it !!
No man can be
lost for loving Kokua
You loved me and gave your soul.
And do you think I
won't die in return?
To save you.
Ah! my dear, you could die a hundred
times and what good would that do?
but to leave me alone until the
time of my damnation comes?
You do not know anything!
You do not know anything.
I was educated in
a Honolulu school
and I tell you
I will save my husband
What does this cent thing mean?
Not all of the world is
American. In England they have a
coin they call farthing which
is worth about half a cent.
Ah! Pity! This does not solve the
problem, because the buyer would be damned
And we won't find anyone
so brave
like my Keawe.
But then there is France
there they have a small
coin they call a cent and
of these it takes five to
make a cent more or less.
More or less.
We couldn't do better.
Come on, Keawe. Let's
go to the French islands,
let's go to Tahiti, quick!
How ships can take us.
We have 4 cents.
3 cents, 2 cents
1 cent. Four
trading possibilities.
And we will be two.
To resolve the matter
Let go of Keawe thoughts
kiss Me
Kokua will defend you.
God! How could I have thought you wanted to
punish me for marrying a woman like Kokua?
When we are in Papeete we will immediately
rent a house very similar to this one
great pomp of money.
And we will show up
with horses and carriages
You will do this easily
thanks to the bottle
because whatever we
need we will turn to the devil.
For the money needed.
At this rate we will soon be
in sight throughout the city
so it will be enough to find the
right opportunity to sell the bottle.
it is a problematic business of
course but there is a solution.
In front of banquets laden
with abundant libations
and good music, souls are
generally better disposed.
We're going to have a big party.
The party, I said, was a good
opportunity to close the bottle deal.
On the other hand unfortunately
the deal, consider that it
was not easy to propose,
why people
or he didn't believe
the whole thing
or laughed,
I gave more importance
to the darker part.
His face was very serious.
And they moved away
from Keawe and Kokua
as from people who
dealt with the devil.
Instead of gaining ground
with that party
The two noticed that everyone
avoided them.
Catholics made
the sign of the cross
and they all began by mutual
agreement to refuse their courtesies.
Even the children ran away.
A cloud.
A cloud
fell
on their souls
God! How weak and careless I have been!
It is he, not I, who
is in eternal danger;
It was he not I who took
the curse upon himself.
For me.
For a creature
of so little value.
Of so little help
and now he sees the
flames of hell so close to him.
On the contrary, he feels the smoke
lying out there in the
wind and the moonlight.
I have been so poor in spirit that I
have not yet realized what my duty was
or even having noticed it
before I turned away from it?
But now I take my
soul in my hands
now I say goodbye to the white steps of Heaven
and the faces of my friends waiting for me,
A love for a love
and mine is equal to that of Keawe!
Old man
would you do me a favor?
Like a stranger to another, like an old man to a
young woman, would you help a daughter from Hawaii?
So you are the witch
coming from the eight islands.
And also my old soul
you want to ensnare.
But I have heard of you.
And I challenge your malice.
I will sit next to you.
Kokua said - and I'll tell you
how things went.
And so it was decided.
He had such honest eyes
and he let her.
So she sat down next to him.
She told him the story of Keawe
from start to finish.
And now I'm his wife
Which he bought with
the salvation of her soul.
What can I do?
if I went to him myself and
offered to buy it,
he would refuse.
But if you go there he will
give it to you with great joy.
I will wait for you here.
You'll buy it for four cents
and I'll buy it back for three.
And the Lord give
strength to a poor girl!
If you were in bad faith,
I believe that God
would strike you down.
He would do it!
You are sure that he would.
I couldn't be that mean.
God wouldn't allow it.
Give me four cents.
Wait for me here.
I followed your orders.
I left your husband
crying like a baby.
He will sleep easily tonight.
He takes the bottle.
Now my husband
it's your turn to sleep.
And when you wake up it will
be your turn to sing and laugh.
But for your poor Kokua
no more singing, no sleep
nor pleasure.
both on earth and in heaven.
He looked like a good old man
But you can't judge
by appearances.
What an old fool.
What an old sinner.
why did the old man want the
bottle if he wasn't
a hardened sinner?
Don't speak like that husband!
His intentions could
have been good.
Nonsense!
He was an old rogue!
I tell you! and
an old donkey too
because the bottle was
already difficult to sell for 4 cents
and at 3? it will be impossible!
There is no longer enough margin!
the thing begins
to smell of burning
and whoever has that
bottle now will take it to hell.
Keawe !!
Isn't it a terrible thing to save
oneself by condemning another?
I guess I couldn't laugh.
I would be humiliated by it.
I would be full of melancholy.
I would pray
for the poor man who owns it.
You can fill yourself with
melancholy as much as you like.
A good wife doesn't think so.
If you cared about me,
you'd sit there full of shame.
Kokua
do not Cry!
Maybe you were right.
Too much joy upset me.
But you will see.
Everything will be better now.
We will forget the bad hours spent
on the island and the tears we shed.
Prepare your bags!
We will leave today.
No!
why
not?
Didn't you want to see your friends again?
What about our
beautiful shining home?
Yes, of course.
But let's not start right away-
Not now.
Why?
With the bottle concern we
haven't seen anything yet.
Of Tahiti.
The wise island.
You are right.
I hadn't thought of it.
Soon
let's go for a nice ride
in the streets right away.
My husband.
I am not feeling well.
I'm depressed.
Forgive me.
I can't have fun
Tell me
You're still thinking
about that damn old man!
Tell me you want me to
be ashamed of being happy.
This is your fidelity.
This is your affection.
Your husband just saved
himself from eternal damnation
that he faced for her sake, and her?
She can't have fun.
Kokua
You have a disloyal heart.
And I'm going to have fun alone.
Hey you!
You are rich!
You always said that!
All evening you kept saying
you're rich!
You have a bottle
or some such nonsense
it is true! I'm rich
And now I'm going to get
some money from my wife.
she is the one who holds the money.
A bad idea this.
Friend.
Which idea?
Never give your
money to a woman!
Why?
Women are fake!
They are all fake!
They are all false.
False.
keep an eye on it.
Friend.
I really wouldn't be
surprised that she was fake
Why else would she be so
dejected after my release?
I will show you who I am!
I am not a man
to be made fun of.
I'll catch you in the act.
The contract with the
old man wasn't all good!
I have to make sure of this right away.
Kokua
Kokua
I had fallen asleep
I've been drinking
and partying all day
I have been with cheerful companions.
I just came to get some money.
Then I'll go back to
drink and party with them.
You are right to use your money.
My husband
I do everything well.
Then she is the one who bought it
Today I have spoken to
you inappropriate words.
Now I return to have fun
with my cheerful companions
and I will find more pleasure in the glass
if you forgive me.
I was asking for only a kind word!
Let one of us never think badly of the each other.
What happened?
it happens that my wife has the bottle!
if you don't help me get it back, there
will be no more money or wine tonight.
But what bottle?
The bottle!
You don't mean to say
That you were serious
about that bottle.
Look me in the face!
Do I look like a joke to you?
It's true. You seem serious to me
like a ghost.
Good!
here is the two cents. Go to my wife
in the house. Offer her this money for
the bottle which (if I'm not entirely
mistaken) she will give you instantly
Then come back to me
and I'll buy it back for 1 cent.
Whatever you do
Don't tell her you're
coming from me.
Friend.
I wonder.
Are you cheating on me?
If so, she will not harm you.
If you doubt me
you can try now.
As soon as you are out of the house
you wish to have your
pockets full of money
Or a bottle of the best rum
or whatever else you like in short
you will see the power of the thing.
Very good.
Great friend.
I'll try.
But...
Remember.
If you are kidding.
I will joke with you.
later.
With this.
Thus, the pirate
went off into the night.
And Keawe stood still
and he waited.
He was steadfast.
And he did not fail in his intentions.
Even if his soul
was bitter with despair
Here we go,
take a seat.
It seemed a long time that she had to wait
Before hearing again
the steps
advancing in the dark of the avenue.
"So give me that
bottle," Keawe murmured
"What bottle? This?" answered
the pirate with indignant satanic.
"You know very well which
bottle I'm talking about"
Keawe said
You have it under your cloak.
I see it!
Get your hands off!!
"if you take a step closer"
If you take a step closer
I'll cut your belly
You thought you could have me
take the chestnuts
out of the fire
it is not true?
What do you mean ??
What I mean?
I mean...
that this...
This is a discreet bottle.
Here's what I mean!
How I got it for
two cents.
I will never be able to understand it.
But what I guarantee you.
is that you
will never
get it back for 1 cent.
But whoever has that
bottle goes to hell !!!
We all have to go there!
and this bottle
it's for that trip.
The best
company
I've found so far.
In your interest please sell it!
Keawe shouted
I don't care what you say
answered the pirate
Cheers to you!
and goodnight to you!
Friend!
So the bottle finally
leaves our story..
And as me.
Which is granted to me.
With all my trusty.
Share
the tombs
Where they freeze
with their deeds.
And Kokua?
Keawe ran to
Kokua light as the wind
And great was their joy that night
And great ever since
it was the peace of their days
In the big shining house.
