Hudson & Rex (2019–…): Season 4, Episode 3 - Rex Marks the Spot - full transcript

After a journalist is killed searching for buried pirate treasure, Charlie and Rex dig deep into the competitive world of treasure-hunters to unearth the killer.

Come on! Keep up!

Reggie, what is the rush, huh?

This treasure's been
buried hundreds of years,

it is not going anywhere!

- I have a feeling this is the year we find it.
- Ah.

I think you mean it's the
year that I find it.

- Doot doot doot doot doot!
- Get serious.

- (DONOVAN LAUGHS)
- You'll find more bottle caps

than doubloons with that thing.

According to Peter Easton's log,

we're looking for an oblong hillcrest.

DONOVAN: Looks like
we're not the only ones.

REGGIE: Ah no! Hey hey!

No no no no no! No, stop!

Early bird gets the worm!

REGGIE: And we're that
bird! Find another spot!

No go! We've been here an hour already!

DONOVAN: Come on fellas! There's
plenty of beach for all of us!

No need to fight!

(DETECTOR BUZZING)

Oh, looks like I found something!

- (DETECTOR BUZZING)
- Reg, it's big!

(REX BARKS)

SARAH: Oh good, you're here!

Big crowd for the middle of nowhere.

You didn't hear?

There's pirate treasure to be found.

And the bay is supposedly
littered with his loot!

I though Easton was just a legend!

Oh no, he's real. Peter
Easton, the pirate admiral

used Newfoundland as his home base.

CHARLIE: Hey, Joe! How'd
you get here so quick?

I actually found the body, Charlie,

with this here.

Wait wait wait. Wait a minute.
You're a treasure hunter?

Yeah, my friend and I mount
a hunt each and every year.

And you expect to find
something with that?

I mean, the whole world is
literally mapped by satellite.

(REX WHINES)

DONOVAN: We don't expect
to find anything, Jesse.

It's just an excuse
to get some fresh air.

That was all supposed
to change this year.

I had this spot picked
out very carefully.

Guys, this is Reggie Filmore,
a childhood friend of mine.

Well, you're looking in a good place.

I think Easton's camp was just a
couple of clicks down the coast.

Exactly.

You read the biography too!

No. Uh, I must've just
heard it somewhere.

Excuse me.

What have we got, Sarah?

Oh, hey. Uh...

This is all very preliminary right now

but we have a male victim, mid-30s.

It was tricky to exhume him.

The site is heavily waterlogged.

Any chance that he
washed in from the ocean

and the sand from the
tide covered him up?

It's too deep. Definitely
a deliberate burial.

- How long has he been here?
- Uh, it's hard to say.

The body was pretty bloated.
Maybe up to four days?

(REX SNIFFING) (REX BARKING)

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

(REX SNIFFING)

- (REX BARKS)
- Rex.

So our guy had a metal detector.

Looks like he was on the hunt as well.

Your ex-wife's book is
really everywhere lately, huh?

Yeah, it's a true best seller.

From every coffee shop and waiting room,

there's Julia just
staring right back at me.

I'm sure the hype will
die down eventually.

I've read mixed reviews.

(REX SNIFFING)

(REX BARKS)

What is it?

Looks like Rex struck gold.

(REX WHINES)

SARAH: So our John Doe
has a name, Ira Kirsch.

He's a journalist from
the Toronto Sentinel.

- CHARLIE: Long way from home.
- DONOVAN: His wife was devastated.

She was looking to file
a missing person's report

- when we contacted her.
- Yeah.

Kirsch published an article
about the treasure hunt last week.

Here, listen to this:

"Naïve fortune seekers
have descended on the bay

off a mere hint throwing
money at tall tales".

But if he thought the
whole thing was a hoax

what was he doing on a
beach with a metal detector?

CHARLIE: Maybe he found
something that changed his mind.

You look at that coin yet?

I still have to have it verified

but judging by the shape and patina,

it does look like the real deal.

So there could be more coins out
there in the hands of our killer.

Who are the big players
in the hunt, Joe?

Oh, there aren't that many.

But there's a lot more now that
that Peter Easton biography came out.

Sorry about that.

Uh, but if I were you, I'd
look into the Birch siblings.

Their family has been
digging for generations.

Yeah, wait. Here they are.

Frances and Griffin Birch.

Kirsch profiles them in his
article. Calls them frauds,

luring tourists to the
bay with folk tales.

That sounds like a good place to start.

Come on, pal.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

GRIFFIN: Triumphant, the pirate admiral,

returns to the Bay
loaded with Incan gold,

only to find his stronghold
set ablaze by an ambush!

So, in desperation,

he sets course for the Northwest

to, um...

Uh, would you excuse me one moment?

Uh, Frances, could you take over?

FRANCES: He sets
course for the Northwest

to hide his treasure...

a treasure that's still
waiting to be unearthed.

Sorry, the tour is
booked up for the day.

CHARLIE: Yeah. We're on duty.

Listen, I'm Detective
Hudson, Major Crimes.

A man was killed in the bay this week,

hunting for treasure.

Vultures.

Each batch of tourists
is worse than the last.

Aren't those your clients
you're talking about?

We Birches have been at
this for three generations.

These people think they
can dig it up in a weekend.

Listen, the man's name is Ira Kirsch.

Did he ever take one of your tours?

FRANCES: No but I did give him an
interview for his article last week.

Haven't seen him around here since.

He wouldn't dare. He wrote
about us like we were crooks.

That must've been hard to take.

FRANCES: I was going to thank him.

Our tours booked up solid
after he published his article.

Why are you running tours
instead of digging yourselves?

Just striking while the iron's hot.

Cash in on the craze now
to fund the real dig later.

FRANCES: Yeah, to tell you the
truth, Kirsch was half right.

The only treasure around here lately

is in those tourists' pockets.

CHARLIE: I'm not so sure that's true.

You see, we found this on his body.

Looks fake to me.

So after the hatchet
job Kirsch did on us,

he went looking for
the treasure himself?

Yeah, looks like it.

And if this is one of Easton's coins,

how do you think he got so close?

I don't know. We didn't
give him any of our secrets.

Hmm.

Okay, Bluebeard. Time to go.

We've got work to do.

(REX BARKS)

Come on!

Okay, thanks for your time.

We'll be in touch.

Don't worry. I'll get
you a day off soon, matey.

(PHONE CHIMING)

Hey, Sarah, any news?

The autopsy report is in.

Cause of death was definitely drowning

but the body had some
distinct post-mortem scrapes

- on the back of the legs.
- Like he was dragged?

This is what I'm thinking, yeah.

So the beach isn't our crime scene.

SARAH: Exactly but we may have
an idea where it actually is.

Charlie, what do you
know about tidal pools?

How much do I need to know?

JESSE: Well, they're
a distinct ecosystem.

After low tide, you're
left with flora and fauna

that are unique to each pool.

Or, in this case, our victim's lungs.

Wait, does that narrow
down our location?

JESSE: Yes. Yes, there are
pools that match the profile

about 20 kilometres down the coast.

I am sending you the
coordinates right now.

- I'm going to meet you there, Charlie.
- Okay. On my way.

Let's go.

DONOVAN: What a dive, Reggie.

How'd you even find this place?

REGGIE: All the treasure
hunters unwind here.

That include you?

Now and then.

If your killer's a hunter,

he's probably been here too.

Come back later. We're not open.

Oh, hey Rita!

Long time no see.

(RITA EXCLAIMS)

Superintendent, I never
expected to see you here.

Well, I could say the
same thing about you!

Oh, hey Rita. Shouldn't your parole

prevent you from working behind a bar?

REGGIE: Whoa, Joe. Easy on
the squeeze. Rita's all right.

Parole is finished, actually.

- Oh, good. I'm happy for you.
- Thank you.

Listen, Rita, I'm looking for
some information on this man here.

Ira Kirsch.

Mm-mm. Doesn't look familiar.

Is he another pirate-obsessed loonie?

Kirsch wrote an article about
the treasure-hunting craze.

Oh yeah. Heard about that.

It had the guys pretty riled up.

- Oh, yeah?
- RITA: Yeah.

Just some drunk big talk, you know?

How they're going to take
this reporter out on a dig

teach him a lesson, that kind of thing.

Well, he's dead.

- Maybe someone did.
- Oh!

God, that's awful!

Rita, do you know any
of these big talkers?

No! This is a cash business.
We don't take names.

But they're regulars.

- They'll be back tonight.
- We'll be here.

Okay. I'll have your
seat dusted for you, Reg.

- You know I loves you, Rita!
- Take care, guys.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

CHARLIE: Now this looks
like a treasure hunt.

SARAH: No kidding.

Whoever's funding this site,
they're not here to play.

(REX SNIFFS)

You want to tell me
who's in charge here?

Hello, Charlie.

Julia.

- Hi.
- Hi.

Aren't you going to
introduce us, Charlie?

Sarah Truong. Hi. Head of forensics.

- Nice to meet you.
- CHARLIE: Yeah.

Sarah, this is Julia Tillman. My...

ex-wife.

(DRAMATIC PERCUSSION)

And who's this fella?

Hello!

Hi!

Aww!

That's Rex.

Charlie Hudson, dog owner?

You put up such a fight when
I wanted to adopt a rescue!

Oh, you are going to tell me that story.

Uhh, I don't own Rex.

He's my partner. What
are you doing here?

Digging.

I scored a university grant

to continue my research on Peter Easton.

Did you not get my book?
I sent you an advance copy.

I moved.

Uh, everyone's digging in the
Northwest because of your book.

What are you doing
here in the Southeast?

A colleague brought me an artifact

- that might've cracked the mystery.
- (OMINOUS MUSIC)

I've been looking at
the clues all wrong.

Anyone else know about that?

I'm sorry. Why the
sudden police interest?

We've got permits to dig.

Someone might have been murdered here.

Here?

You're kidding!

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

Has anyone besides you
or your crew been on site?

No, just my contractors.

- No security on watch?
- No need.

- We've kept this site under wraps.
- Really?

Even from a reporter from Toronto?

I've never seen that man before.

- (REX SNIFFING)
- (OMINOUS MUSIC)

(REX SNIFFING)

(REX BARKING)

(REX BARKING)

Good job, partner.

We're going to have
to shut down your site

when we do forensic analysis.

JULIA: Charlie, I'm on a schedule.

CHARLIE: Sorry, Rex
smells a victim here.

It's now a crime scene.

Well, I'd like to stay on-site

in case your team turns
up anything significant.

SARAH: That shouldn't be a problem.

CHARLIE: I'm going to
need you and your workers

to provide your whereabouts
for the past week.

JULIA: Fine. I've got nothing to hide.

Good.

Sarah, I'll see you later.

Nice to meet you, handsome.

- Bye.
- Rex. Come on.

Don't get too attached, buddy.

(DOOR LOCK BEEPS)

JESSE: Oh! Can I show
you something real quick?

Oh Jesse, if I were you,

I would get rid of that
before Charlie gets here.

JESSE: Really? What's the deal?

I don't understand why
we're walking on eggshells.

Turn it over and have a look at
the picture on the back, Jesse.

It's Charlie's ex-wife.

I was around when they got a divorce

and it was messy. She cheated on him.

Oh.

Okay, well you know what?
Look, in the meantime,

I have been digging a
little bit deeper into it

and there's a printed
map on the inside, so,

I overlaid some modern satellite imagery

with all the data in the book...

- (KEYBOARD CLACKING)
- about all possible routes

that Easton could have taken.

Okay, so, if Kirsch dug
up some of Easton's gold,

that means one of these
could be our crime scene.

Yeah, exactly.

Also, more importantly,

you and Reggie should use
these spots for your hunts.

Is this actual police work Jesse?

Or are you still trying to make a point?

- Both, both! I'm multitasking.
- (PHONE BUZZING)

It's time you bring your treasure
hunt into the 21st century!

Right. Talk to me Charlie.

CHARLIE: Hey. Rex
sniffed out the tidal pool

that Kirsch likely died in.

It was next to a massive
treasure hunting dig site.

Where, exactly?

CHARLIE: I'll send
you the pin right now.

Julia swears that word
didn't get out about the dig.

So it should narrow
down our suspects list.

Wait, did you say Julia?

CHARLIE: Yeah, it's her dig site.

DONOVAN: What's your
read on her, Charlie?

She's the only person we
can place at the scene.

Well, I mean the Julia I remember

wouldn't be capable of murder.

I haven't seen her in a long time.

Jesse, I'm going to send
you Julia's information.

She said that she and her
workers can provide alibis.

Okay. Until then, we'll keep an eye out

for anyone who caught
wind of her dig site.

And Reggie and I will
do some recon tonight.

Yeah, you got it.

Here you go, sweetheart.

Only one of them here tonight.

One of your big-talkers.

DONOVAN: Hold on. The guy
from the beach this morning?

- You know him at all?
- Name's Buck.

Hunts on the weekends.

Has some middle management job.

Likes the video slot machines.

DONOVAN: Hey, Buck!

A round. On us.

You know? We figured
you'd deserve a drink

after this morning's, uh,
activities. Where's your...

- where's your teammate?
- Don't have my dedication.

You're still looking, huh?

Even after we dug up that poor guy?

We can't give up now.

I heard the stiff
actually found some gold.

- Who told you that?
- Slipped a cop a few bucks this morning.

- You didn't tell me that.
- You're on a need to know basis.

I already gave my statement.

Yeah, well you didn't tell
us that you knew Kirsch.

I heard you read his article.

Made us look like fools.

Maybe he got what he deserved.

- (GLASSES CLINK)
- So you threatened a man's life in public,

and then showed up at the
spot where he's buried.

That's a pretty big
coincidence there, Buck.

I was just drunk.

I never even met the guy.

Your buddy showed up on that
beach today. You grill him too?

I'm not talking about him.

Why did you pick that site?

Done my research, haven't I?

Got to stay ahead of the big guns.

Hold on, what are you talking about?

Well, this rich guy approached
me and half the guys in here

about a month ago. Recruiting for a dig.

He didn't ask me.

Did you happen to catch his name?

Leon Barrett.

Leon Barrett.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

(PINBALL MACHINE CLACKING AND PINGING)

Here you go.

So, Kirsch was alive Thursday afternoon.

He'd called his editor to say
that he was onto something big.

Well, that explains
why he was still in town

after his article was published.

Yeah, but here's the thing.

I called the hotel concierge,

Kirsch never picked up his
Friday morning wake-up call.

So he either slept in late

- or checked out early, so to speak.
- Mm-hmm.

You look into those alibis?

Yeah, yeah. Uh,

Julia's contractors, they check out.

And Julia?

I'm still waiting to
hear back from her source.

- Which is?
- I'll tell you when her alibi clears.

- WOMEN'S VOICES: Hey!
- (REX BARKS)

Hi!

JESSE: Hmm.

- They sure seem friendly.
- Yeah. Um...

Turn up anything at the site?

Yeah, how about boot prints that
match the shoes Kirsch was buried in?

It's definitely our crime scene.

JULIA: And more importantly,

you are looking at a genuine

17th century Spanish doubloon.

JESSE: Oh, wow. That's incredible!

You're sure?

JULIA: Even double-checked with
a colleague at the university.

This is going to be huge.

CHARLIE: Yeah, it would be great,

if we didn't find it on a dead man.

(SARAH CLEARS THROAT)

Julia, I've been reading your book.

Can you tell me how you came
across those captain's logs?

Ah, that is a very
interesting story, actually.

Sarah, what are you doing? That's
a crucial piece of evidence.

She's still a credible suspect.

She's the only one
qualified to verify it.

- (CHARLIE SIGHS)
- And there was another set of prints

on the scene that didn't
match Julia, or her crew,

so we might be able to rule her out.

You're right. Uh, I'm sorry.

- That's good news.
- Look, I understand the skepticism.

I know Julia doesn't have a great
track record of being honest with you.

I'm just trying to
keep my head on straight

- and focus on the case.
- I totally get it.

Just trust that I know what I'm doing.

You got it. I'm sorry.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

Hey!

You look headachy.

Uh, Rum and Coke doesn't
agree with me anymore.

Oh. I thought you were just
drinking Coke at the pub?

Well, the rum came later.

It just all mixes up into
a cocktail in the end.

Well, you know what?

I've got just the cure for you.

- Nuclear launch codes?
- Mm-mm.

That's a serial number

for the metal detector found on Kirsch.

To track the point of purchase.

Exactly. I figured we should know
exactly when Kirsch decided to go

from skeptic to treasure hunter.

- Mmmm.
- Thing is,

is that he didn't make that purchase.

Who did?

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

CHARLIE: If Kirsch had never
been on one of your tours,

then how'd he end up getting buried

with one of your metal detectors?

Well, Frances runs the tour inventory.

One of our detectors
went missing last week.

I only realized when we
were locking up later.

- Convenient.
- Well, the truth often is.

I'm not sure what
else we can do for you.

You can start by handing
over your tour logs

for the last couple of weeks.

Sure.

Thanks.

Wait, Leon Barrett
took one of your tours?

- The tech investor?
- More like professional thief.

- How do you mean?
- Well, he waltzes into treasure hunts

all over the world funding digs
for his fancy private collection.

I only realized who he
was at the end of the tour.

He offered an insane amount of money

to consult on some dig he was planning.

- And I take it you didn't accept?
- We're not for sale.

I'd be spitting on my family history

if we hired ourselves
out for some rich jerk

to find the treasure himself.

DONOVAN: Okay. Well,
thank you for your time.

We'll take this with us.

(DRAMATIC PERCUSSION)

Okay, Jesse, what do I
need to know about this guy

- before I head out there?
- Leon Barrett.

Silicon Valley tech investor,
collector of fine antiquities.

It's not his first rodeo.

You mean this isn't his
only pirate treasure?

Oh yeah. Along with Mesozoic fossils,
Peruvian talismans, you name it.

Any connection to our victim, Kirsch?

Well, Kirsch wasn't a fan.

He's been covering Barrett extensively.

One exposé in 2015 called
him a Sili-Con Artist.

Oh, that I can work with. Thanks, Jesse.

Okay, pal. Let's get this on you.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

Leon Barrett?

SJPD! I need to inform
you, we're going to board,

we've boarded your boat.

Welcome aboard.

Detective Hudson. This
is my partner, Rex.

It's a pleasure to meet you.

I thought I'd see you sooner or later.

You heard about the murder?

Well, I'm not surprised, unfortunately.

Pirate treasure will attract pirates.

Greed makes animals of us all.

Does that include you? I hear
you're on the hunt as well.

Couldn't be more true.

I'm not leaving without it, in fact.

You can't be that invested
if you're floating out here.

I'd rather be getting my hands dirty,

but there's work to do.

I won't be leaving until
we find the treasure.

We?

I'm really bumping into you
everywhere, huh, Charlie?

BARRETT: I have to insist
you and Rex stay for lunch.

If I'm going to be interrogated,

let's be civilized about it.

(CHARLIE SIGHS)

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

Reggie.

Man, I've got to tell you,
this has been exciting.

Are we going undercover again?

What were you doing on the Birch tour?

(REGGIE SCOFFS) Getting ripped off.

What else?

I wanted to see where they were digging.

Reggie, I need you to
level with me, okay?

I thought this was just a fun tour

that we took each and every
year. But you seem really

really wrapped up in this.

It's going to sound crazy
but this hunt is all I've got.

So it must've hurt when
Kirsch got there first,

after making a joke about the
hunt to the rest of the world.

(REGGIE SCOFFS)

Don't play that game with me, Joe.

I didn't murder Kirsch. You
know me better than that!

Reggie, the metal detector found
on Kirsch was from the Birch tour.

- Yeah?
- So we were combing through their tour log lists

to who could have possibly
stolen that metal detector.

Reggie, your name was on that list!

So if there's something
you've got to tell me,

you need to tell me right now!

I didn't touch their
equipment. It was trash!

Just like their tour!

They took us to some
barren stretch of the bay,

away from where everyone
knows the treasure is buried.

Hold on.

Where exactly were the
Birches holding that tour?

BARRETT: Bon appétit!

So why is a man like you

so interested in something
as trivial as pirate treasure?

- No offense.
- Some taken.

Well, it looks like you've already
sunk a small fortune into this dig.

A quarter mill, give or take.

Is it really worth that?

Could be more than twenty
times that down there.

But it's not the money.

It's holding history in your hand.

Ah, but the money doesn't hurt.

It's the hunt that matters more.

And when I read Julia's biography,

I found the perfect partner.

- Everything since then has been a bonus.
- (CHARLIE SCOFFS)

Well, since you already had Julia,

how come you tried to hire every
other treasure hunter in town?

BARRETT: Just a line to
find out what people knew.

Found out they're all
amateurs digging in the sand.

Hmm!

Your operation is a
pretty big investment

for something that might
not produce any results.

It will.

Even if we haven't gotten anything yet.

Did you ever meet Kirsch?

The writer?

- Why?
- CHARLIE: He was pretty interested in you.

He even wrote a couple
articles about your business.

I don't pay a lot of
attention to the press.

He wasn't my biggest fan I take it?

Yeah, not exactly.

I think he called you a Sili-Con Artist.

(BARRETT SCOFFS)

BARRETT: He coined that?

Well, good for him.

That nickname's been
following me around for years.

(JULIA CLEARS THROAT)

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

(REX SNIFFING)

REGGIE: This is the spot where
the Birch Siblings held their tour.

Like I said, there's nothing out here!

JESSE: Yeah, well,
except for the crime scene

which is about 3 kilometres
southwest of here.

DONOVAN: That's pretty rough terrain.

Do you think they'd
have access from here?

Oh, well, I am so glad you asked!

Now allow me to introduce to you

the treasure hunting technology

of today.

DONOVAN: Jesse, can you
just give it a rest? Please.

JESSE: Oh, come on. This'll show
us the lay of the land in no time.

(DONOVAN SIGHS)

(DRONE WHIRRING)

Okay, so you can see

Julia and Barrett's dig site
way way out there. You see it?

Okay, there.

There's a clearing in
the trees right there.

- See if you can get closer.
- Okay.

Wait, wait. Who's that?

- (STATIC)
- No no no no no no no!

What happened?

- No!
- DONOVAN: Jeez.

Oh no! Come on man!

What?

You really get the lay of the
land from down here, huh, Reg?

What the hell?

First time flying?

Ah, sorry. I can pay for this.

You can't replace my time.

I've been taking a
time-lapse for three hours

- waiting for the sun to go down.
- JESSE: Oh really?

Well, good news at least, that's
supposed to happen again tomorrow.

Listen, Jesse, we're
going to leave you to this.

Let's go.

(JESSE SIGHS)

DONOVAN: SJPD!

Hold it!

(FRANCES SIGHS)

What are you doing here?

Didn't you see the tape?

We were just scoping new tour routes.

On an active crime scene?

You're close to scoping
the inside of a jail cell.

Follow me.

That was some performance, Hudson.

I'm doing my job.

That new friend of yours has
a lot at stake in this dig.

The money he threw at
this is a vacation for him.

Hell, I have more at stake than he does.

You suspect me too?

Oh my God. You do.

You haven't exactly
been up front with me.

Why didn't you tell me that
Barrett was funding your dig?

Technically, he funds the
grant through the university.

- Come on.
- Well, it just never felt like the right time

- to bring it up.
- He should've been on the list of crew

that you turned in. If I'd known that,

I never would have let you
this close to my investigation.

Not my first choice either. I've
had enough of that for a lifetime.

Ughh.

- (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)
- (REX SNIFFING)

Charlie, this is the first time
we've spoken without lawyers in...

Six years.

I'm glad someone's been counting.

You know, let me ask you a question.

If you hadn't gotten
all wrapped up in this,

would you have even let
me know you were in town?

Honestly...

- I don't know.
- Mm-hmm.

I did have dinner with your aunt though.

- Miranda?
- She's way more fun.

We were up till 2:00 AM drinking sherry.

- (CHARLIE CHUCKLES)
- You wouldn't.

(REX BARKING)

(REX BARKS)

What have you got, pal?

Good find, pal.

You want me to trust you, huh?

(REX BARKS)

(DRAMATIC PERCUSSION)

Looks like your dig site
turned up more than I thought.

Look again.

That's not treasure. It's just trash.

Random things I found at the dig.

Nothing I can connect to Easton.

Well then why did Rex's nose
track the gold right to this?

I don't know. You
tell me. He's your dog.

Wait.

That means the gold on Kirsch
must have come from my site!

I am digging in the right spot!

Wait a second.

This doesn't look like junk.

That is the exception,

the key to all this.

I have reason to believe that it is
Easton's personal wayfinding tool.

It's broken. It's pointing
West instead of due North.

Exactly.

I always thought if Easton's
treasure was out there,

someone would have found it by now.

But if he buried the treasure
with a broken compass,

- then everyone's looking in the wrong place.
- Real sharp, Charlie.

I have my moments.

Yeah.

Easton made sure that no one
would find his treasure but him.

When I got this I
realized I had the key.

But if you didn't dig it
up, where'd it come from?

I brought it to her.

- Where did you find it?
- Hold on a second.

Frances Birch sold it to me

after her brother refused an
offer to join Team Barrett.

I'm sorry. Team Barrett?

You haven't even been out to the dig.

How'd you get Frances to give this up?

The poor girl didn't
even realize what she had.

I got it for a song.

Excuse me. Sorry. I'm back.

Tell me again from the start.

Can I borrow this?

Where are you headed?

I'm just going to walk
the shore a little while.

Clear my head.

Close quarters back there?

(JULIA SIGHS)

Enough suspicion,
Charlie. It's exhausting.

I'm sorry. It comes with the job.

(OMINOUS MUSIC)

Listen, your site is probably
going to be cleared tomorrow.

So good luck.

Really.

Thanks, Charlie.

(OMINOUS MUSIC)

You caught the Birches
near the crime scene

and you didn't bring them in?

Yeah, I mean we only
had them on trespassing

and Donovan wanted to make sure

we had more of a substantial charge.

- And now?
- Well, I took a closer look

into their tour itinerary.

In the window that Kirsch
could've been killed,

they had been running
tours nearby every day.

So motive and opportunity,

plus a more likely reason

the metal detector was found on Kirsch.

The math checks out.

Okay, pal. Let's go get them.

(REX BARKS)

(DRAMATIC PERCUSSION)

Honest! I haven't seen
my sister in hours.

What were you and your
sister really doing

at the Southwest dig site earlier?

Frances has been acting
strangely for days.

I mean, she insisted I
check out a spot with her

but wouldn't tell me
why until we got there.

Does it have something to do with this?

Where did you get that?

Is it that important?

My grandfather dug that up.
It was an old family legend,

it belonged to Peter Easton himself.

Then why is your sister
selling it to Leon Barrett?

- Who told you that?
- Barrett.

Maybe she was trying to suck up to him.

Frances figured he and that
woman were onto something.

- She'd been watching them.
- (PHONE BUZZING)

Barrett, what's going on?

BARRETT: Charlie. Is Julia with you?

- No, we dropped her off on the shore.
- Really?

- She didn't make it back to the boat?
- No.

She never made it back.

Wait a second. I think
I know where she is.

Rex!

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

FRANCES: Don't test me!

Show me where it is now
or I'm pulling the trigger!

CHARLIE: Frances!

- Drop the weapon.
- I'm not leaving here empty-handed.

CHARLIE: Julia. You okay?

JULIA: Well, I have a bit
of a problem here, Charlie.

Like I already told
her, if it was that easy

to find the treasure,
I would have it by now.

It's here. It's got to be here! Find it!

My partner will find what you want.

But when he does,

you let Julia go.

Deal.

Put your gun down and
keep that dog away from me

and no one gets hurt.

Hey, pal.

Come on.

(REX SNIFFING)

Track it.

JULIA: Okay, my life is being gambled

on a German shepherd's nose.

You'd be surprised
how often it pays off.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

(REX SNIFFING)

JULIA: Frances, if it's
that important to you,

your family can keep the treasure.

I just need it first for my research.

It's not about that! It's the principle!

This was everything my
family worked towards!

So you didn't know the
compass was Easton's?

I always thought my grandfather
was just blowing smoke.

But when you set up your
dig all the way out here,

I knew I'd screwed up.

You were watching us.

FRANCES: Every night for a week.

And then, one night,
I dug up a single coin.

And then you had a visitor.

Yeah, that reporter.

What did Kirsch say when he saw you?

Nothing. He wasn't even
interested in the treasure.

He was after that Barrett guy.

- Then why'd you kill him?
- I didn't!

- Come on, Frances.
- I didn't kill him!

(REX BARKING)

Move.

Move!

Come on.

(REX SNIFFING)

(REX BARKING)

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

(FABRIC RIPPING)

(METAL JINGLING)

JULIA: Oh my God!

It's real.

It's really real!

(JANGLING METAL)

Come on, boy. Bring it over.

(REX BARKS)

Come on!

Come on, boy!

- (DRAMATIC MUSIC)
- (REX SNARLING)

Ughhh!

Ughh!

Uhhh!

(REX BARKING)

I think the hunt's over, Frances.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

(REX BARKS)

- DONOVAN: So.
- JESSE: So, I'm out five grand

- for the drone I crashed into.
- Jesse.

The footage.

Footage. Right, he should be sending it

right now!

Okay, so...

The videographer has been taking
these time-lapse shots nightly.

Now, with Frances's statement,

we know that Kirsch was
at the scene on Thursday.

- Then we should be able to...
- Wait a second.

I know that boat. That's Barrett's
boat. It was on his yacht.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

Oh, so let's bring him in.

Well who's to know that
Barrett was driving?

(REX BARKS)

Julia, you would have had
access to that boat too.

(JULIA SIGHS)

(JANGLING METAL)

Looks like you were
digging in the right place.

(BARRETT EXCLAIMS)

I can't believe it.

(BARRETT EXCLAIMS)

Where's Julia?

That's the bad news.

Julia is being held
on suspicion of murder.

- I'm calling my lawyers right now.
- Let me ask you a few questions first.

Not just as a cop. I need to know.

We've narrowed down the time of death

to Thursday night at 1:00 am.

Was Julia on the boat that night?

No.

She was onshore.

She had to retrieve
some tools from the dig

and she was gone for a very long time.

- I can't believe it.
- Neither can I.

Because it's a lie.

- Excuse me?
- Julia was ashore that night.

She was having dinner with my aunt.

Checked the alibi myself

even the water taxi
that took her both ways.

So she lied to me about
where she was going.

- What does that prove?
- It proves to me that your theory is right.

Pirate treasure attracts pirates.

You don't care about Julia.

- Detective, you're overstepping here.
- Am I?

Because you went that night to
find the treasure for yourself.

Swipe it out from underneath her,

take it away from academia

and put it into your private collection.

But then you found Kirsch instead.

I already told you,

- I don't know Kirsch!
- No, but Kirsch knows you.

Better than you'd like.

He's been working on a story
for the past few months.

Seems you've been siphoning money

from your charitable foundations

to try and finance these Indiana
Jones-type fantasies of yours.

- You can't prove any of this.
- Oh.

This is you, isn't it?

On your boat, at the time of the murder

heading from the place
where Kirsch was killed

to where he was buried?

(BARRETT CHUCKLES)

Julia always said you
were good at your job.

You keep your mouth shut,

you and Rex can enjoy a nice

early retirement.

(CHARLIE SCOFFS)

What do you say?

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

Rex.

(DRAMATIC PERCUSSION)

- (REX BARKS)
- Ughh!

CHARLIE: There goes
your treasure, Barrett.

(BARRETT COUGHING)

I can't believe I hitched
my life, my career,

to a cold-blooded murderer.

Yeah, you sure know how to pick them.

(JULIA CHUCKLES)

Well, despite the circumstances,

I'm glad I ran into you on this trip.

Yeah, me too.

I was glad I could be there
for the find of your career.

Well, the real credit goes to this guy.

Who knows how long it would've taken me

to find it without his nose?

(CHARLIE CHUCKLES)

Where is the treasure, anyway?

Do I want to know what
happened to the rest of it?

Let's just say that your buddy Easton,

I think he got most of it back

thanks to Rex.

See you around, Charlie.

DONOVAN: So how many times
do I have to say I'm sorry?

REGGIE: I'll let you know.

A couple more times at least.

Guys, guys, look at this. So,

if Charlie is right about
where the treasure went down,

it's only in like 60 feet of water.

REGGIE: We could still get it?

- DONOVAN: You know how to dive?
- I'll learn.

Or we could rent a submersible!

What do you mean, we?

Well, I mean,

seems to me that you guys
could use some fresh blood.

- You know, my brains and your...
- (REGGIE SCOFFS)

Well, my brains anyway.

You, uh...

- you all right?
- (SOFT GUITAR)

Yeah. Surprisingly, feeling fine.

Well, it's not every
case that's going to throw

a year's worth of
therapy at you, I guess.

Yeah, six is more like it.

I have avoided looking at my
marriage for an awful long time.

Yeah. What'd you learn?

Hmm.

Well, if you don't walk the same road

then you just end up
taking different paths.

- Hmm.
- Maybe it's not anybody's fault.

- So you're okay?
- Yeah.

I think I can turn the page
on that part of my life,

- focus on what's next.
- Ohhh. What's that?

- Your guess is as good as mine.
- (SARAH CHUCKLES)

(REX BARKS)

- Next time on Hudson & Rex...
- (SCREAMING)

I don't think Madelyn's
fall was an accident.

Looking at her harness, I
think it was tampered with.

When you run for office,
you expect scrutiny.

But for someone to stalk
me through the woods?

To try and kill me?

We're going to need a
contact number for your boss.

There's a very real
chance she's in danger.

She's on a tech-free leadership retreat.

- Not Women in the Wild?
- That's it, yeah!

The Minister is on the
same retreat as Sarah.

Is everything okay? Is Sarah safe?

Jesse, just call for backup! Now!

(SCREAMING)
