Track, Rex!

That's it, Rex! Go!

Keep on going!

- Help! Help!
- Shut up and move!

- Get off me! Help!
- Just go!

Ughh!

Ugh! Uhh!

Ughh!

Uhh!

Ughh!

Ughhh!

Uhhh!

Get off me! Arrghh!

Ghaaahh!

SJPD!

Stop right there! Hands
where I can see them!

Uhh!

Ahh!

Go. Go!

So what do you think, partner?

You like those ones?

- Good choice.
- I agree.

Hey, Sarah.

I got your message.

Hey, Rex.

Thank-you for inviting me.

Well, you're a part of the team.

It wouldn't feel right to
not have you be a part of it.

I really appreciate that.

Feel like a walk? It's a bit of a hike.

Yeah, I'd love to.

And you know what? It will give
you time to tell me the whole story.

Because I only know bits and pieces

of how you and Rex got together.

Oh.

Well...

It began with an abduction.

I'd been off duty. But I
got called in to assist.

- Excuse me.
- Okay.

By the time I responded,
the search was underway.

I met Joe at the scene.
And things were looking...

grim.

What do we know so far?

The boy's name is Sam Hansen. Aged 13.

Lives with his mother, Emma Hansen.

He was walking home from a piano lesson

when he was snatched off
the street he lives on.

- Are we looking at a parental abduction?
- No no. The father's deceased.

Witnesses?

Yeah, a neighbour saw him
pushed into a white van.

Called it in.

Did they give a suspect description?

Nothing helpful.

Male, medium build.

- Wearing a dark hoodie.
- Mm-hmm.

Have we got a Canine Unit tracking him?

You haven't heard?

Constable Grace Lindsay was
shot and killed by the abductor.

What about the dog? Still tracking him?

No.

That dog's proved to be a problem.

Then call K9 again! Would you please?

We need someone down here now!

I've got four months
left running Forensics.

K9 is not my responsibility.

- You want to fill me in, Gus?
- Yeah.

That dog won't let us anywhere
near his partner's body.

He's trying to protect her.

Yeah, but he's also stopping
us from processing the scene.

That piece of cloth lying next to him

could tell us who did this.

Well...

maybe time to try a new approach.

What's the dog's name?

Rex.

Rex?

Seriously?

Seriously.

Well...

time for Rex and I
to have a little chat.

Hey. Easy.

Everybody just give Rex a little space.

Has Charlie ever even owned a dog?

I have no idea.

Hey, Rex. Hi.

Okay.

You must be hungry. Are you...?

Hey.

Look at this.

Granola bar.

It's only half eaten.

Hey!

Enough of that! Understood?

Yeah, I know. We both have
our issues to deal with.

Now is not the time.

Look.

I know you wanted to protect
Officer Lindsay. And you couldn't.

It's not your fault.

But now, other officers need your help.

I need you to come with us

so that we can find out who did this.

Yeah.

And bring Sam home safe.

Okay?

Gus, we're going to need your car.

Be my guest.

Okay.

Okay.

Come on.

Come on.

Don't worry.

We'll take good care of her.

Huh.

Good boy.

Alright Gus. I need any DNA
information you can give me, ASAP.

- Will do.
- Charlie, you're with me.

Yeah.

We're going to get this guy, Rex.

I promise.

I remember you telling
me Rex's original partner

died in the line of
duty. But I didn't realize

- it was part of a kidnapping.
- This is the street it happened on.

Sam was walking right over
there when he got snatched.

- His mother must have been in agony.
- Yeah, she was.

Her name was Emma Hansen.

She and Sam lived in that house.

Right there.

It was the first place we went.

- How could I have let this happen?
- Don't blame yourself, Emma.

It's not your fault.

What's happening now?

Will the dogs find them?

Well, with the amount
of rain we've had lately,

I'm afraid that they've lost the scent.

But don't worry.
They're still searching.

And hopefully they'll be able to

- get the trail again.
- Hopefully?

That's it?

I'm sorry. We didn't get your name.

Veronica Majors. I'm president
of the Neighbourhood Association.

And I run the Neighbourhood Watch.

I'm sorry I snapped at you.

I just feel like we've
totally let Emma down.

Well, I can assure you that we have

the full resources of SJPD on this case.

Well that's reassuring. Hmm?

Emma, do you mind if I
have a look in Sam's room?

Of course. It's just down the hall.

Has anything unusual
happened in the neighbourhood?

- I'm sorry. I can't think of anything.
- It's okay.

Even the littlest thing?

No matter how small?

Um...

Emma, perhaps I can get you
a cup of tea or something?

Yes.

Veronica, perhaps you
can show me the way.

Of course. The kitchen's through there.

Thank you.

I appreciate it.

Hi, Emma.

I was just wondering if I
could ask a few more questions.

If that's okay?

Of course.

Is it just you and Sam?

Yes.

Sam's dad died in a car
accident when he was four.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.

Is there anybody new in Sam's life?

- Or yours?
- No. No one.

I am very careful about that.

We live a very quiet life.

Why do you ask?

It's this painting.

Do you have any idea who this is?

No. Uh...

It's just a painting of Sam's.

Did you ever talk to him about it?

I don't understand.

Sam likes to paint.

He's good at it, too.

May I take a look?

Sure.

I haven't seen this one.

He mustn't have done it in class.

Class?

I teach a weekend art class.

Sam's been coming for years.

Okay, well if you think
of anything further,

please let us know.

Of course.

Anything at all.

I will.

Thank you.

Here, darling.

Sam's mother is holding back on us.

- What makes you say that?
- Well, showing her the painting,

she seemed to recognize
something about it.

So why didn't she say something?

- Exactly.
- Guys!

It's finally here!

What's here?

The new digital board!
It finally arrived!

It's going to completely
revolutionize the way we work.

I mean it's going to be
great! Here, check this out.

Oh no. That's not...
that's not what you want.

No. No no no no no. One more time.

That's so funny how that happens, eh?

Okay, one more. I'm going to try again.

Jesse. Why don't we just do
things the old fashioned way

until you've worked the kinks out?

That's... yeah.

Probably a good idea.

Okay. Look, I did a background check

on everybody connected to Sam.

And so far, nothing jumps
out as unusual or suspicious.

Well, I've got another
name for you to check out.

Emma Hansen.

- Sam's mother?
- Sam's mother.

Okay, sure.

Oh, by the way, Gus from
Forensics wants to see you.

Oh. Alright.

Jesse, why don't you put
this up on your board?

What's this?

I think it's a picture of the kidnapper.

Gus.

- Hey.
- Hey, Rex.

How are you doing, pal?

He's still a bit confused.

- But who wouldn't be? Poor guy.
- Yeah.

Hey. Did you get a DNA sample
from that piece of cloth?

Yeah, but there's no
match in the system.

But I did find something
interesting though.

That's the piece of cloth.

Just show it to Rex.

Here.

Smell it. Sniff.

Here. Come here, boy.

Hey hey! Rex!

What's gotten into him?

- That's how he reacts to the kidnapper's scent.
- Why would he do that?

Because he's been so
negatively imprinted with it.

The important thing is not only can
Rex track the kidnapper's scent...

He'll bark at whatever he smells it on.

You can't just take Rex!

He belongs to the Canine Unit.

But he's an eyewitness who
can identify the kidnapper.

He's not trained to perform
those sorts of duties!

- It's not protocol!
- Well, screw protocol!

- We're trying to bring a young kid home!
- Okay.

Everybody just calm down.

Charlie, exactly what are you proposing?

That Rex works with me.

- Works with you? How?
- Yes.

I take Rex everywhere with me.

He can react to whatever
the killer has touched.

A coat. A car.

Joe.

Look, Rex could find something
that we'd never even considered.

Have you ever even owned a dog?

Jan, unfortunately,
time isn't on our side.

We have everything to gain.

- Nothing to lose.
- Yes.

There's a bigger problem.

What's that?

When a canine loses the
partner they've trained with,

they often become unstable.

Overly aggressive.

Therefore, regulation
suggests that we retire Rex.

Retire? Wait.

Do you mean put him down?

There will be an assessment.

And then a final decision will be made.

Joe! No!

I'm not letting this happen.

It's not up to you.

When will this assessment take place?

Within 48 hours.

Renley. You have to leave Rex with me.

At least until then. Okay?

He might be the only way we find Sam.

I'll see what I can do.

Guys.

I have something.

Turns out your hunch about
Sam's mother was right.

- What do you mean?
- I found a photo of Emma Hansen.

That is not Sam's mother.

That's correct.

See, whoever this woman
claiming to be Sam's mom is,

it is not Emma Hansen.

- Are you sure?
- I'm positive.

Emma Hansen died of
cancer eight years ago.

Then who the hell is this woman?

So, Sam's mom was living
under a false name?

- For years.
- Pulling that off must have taken a lot of work.

Social insurance numbers, health cards,

passports, driver's licenses.

She had them all.

Why was this woman doing it?

Because, as it turns out...

she herself was a kidnapper.

You lied to us. Hmm?

The real Emma Hansen is dead.
Your name is Lisa Crawford.

Your son's name is Sam Crawford.

And your husband, Henry Crawford,

has a warrant out for you in
Michigan for child abduction!

It's okay, Rex.

He's going pretty hard on her.

He has to.

Every second counts
in a kidnapping case.

- You don't understand anything.
- Then tell me the truth!

I stole my son in a dead woman's name

to get Sam away from that man.

You're telling me that you took your son

to protect him from his father?

Henry is violent.

He wasn't at first.

I thought things would change.

But it only got worse.

One day I came home and Sam was crying.

He had a black eye.

He was only four years old.

Check her story out.

Why didn't you tell me this before?

I should have.

All I hoped was that

you would find Sam before you
figured out I don't have custody.

Is that Henry?

Is that Sam's father?

I thought Sam believed
that his father was dead.

But he never stopped looking for us.

He sent messages to
everyone who'd ever known me,

- trying to find me.
- Hmm.

He got private detectives
all over the US.

He even offered a
reward for Sam's return.

A hundred thousand dollars.

Did Sam know about that?

Maybe.

I saw a search for his
father's name on his computer.

That is when I knew that I had
to come clean about everything.

But I made him promise
not to tell anyone.

I'm not sure he kept that promise.

Is this the dog whose
partner was killed?

His name is Rex.

I'm sorry, Rex.

I'm so sorry.

This is Henry Crawford

Lisa's estranged husband.

Six charges of assault in the States.

So she just took Sam and ran.

And Henry tried to track them down.

Well I'm not so sure about that.

The neighbour who saw the kidnapper

said he was medium
build. But from this file,

Henry is a tall man.

Well maybe someone else kidnapped Sam

and tried to collect
the $100,000 reward.

Hopefully that someone
still has to deliver

- Sam to his father.
- How? I mean...

the airports and ferry terminals
are completely under surveillance.

So whoever snatched Sam can't get out

and Henry Crawford can't get in.

They must be making the
exchange another way.

What else do we know about Henry?

Well, he's a real outdoorsman.

He hunts, fishes. Owns a truck, a boat.

Holds a pilot's license.

- A pilot's license?
- Yeah, small planes.

Can't get into the airport.

Jesse, can you pull up a topographic map

of the area the kidnapper
ran away with Sam?

Can I?

Can you?

Oh, now? Yeah, sure.

Okay, those lakes are water access only

and there's some cabins not
too far away in the woods.

So the kidnapper holes
up in one of these

until things blow over.

Henry flies in with a
floatplane and picks up Sam.

Jesses, contact these cabins

and see if anyone's
made any reservations

in the last couple of weeks.

Keep a special eye out for
anyone who's paid using US funds.

I'm on it.

Whoah, what's up with him?

Looks like someone's hungry.

Oh, right.

Yeah.

Yeah, uh let me see.

Well, this is not the freshest, but...

Want some?

- Make yourself at home!
- Charlie.

- Yeah.
- I think I found the cabin.

Coffee break's over, Rex. Back to work.

SJPD! We're coming in!

All clear, Charlie!

What is it, Rex?

Food on the table is still warm.

So whoever it was, we just missed them.

Sam and his kidnapper.

Sam's clay figure.

Yeah, Rex found it.

He's pretty handy to have around.

I'm calling for a search team.

Wait, Joe. Joe.

Joe, I think we've got one here. Rex.

You smell someone you
don't like, don't you?

Yeah?

Go.

Find it.

Apparently you need
to know the magic word.

Search?

Rex track!

- Now what?
- I guess we try and keep up.

Rex stop! Stay! Whoah
whoah whoah! Just don't...

get close to that cliff!

Oh yeah.

Pease tell me they did not go this way.

Come on. We're going around.

Rex.

Rex, you're not seriously thinking
what I think you're thinking.

Rex! No!

Hey!

Charlie! Stop! Hey!

Charlie! No, you can't do that!

- Rex could drown!
- Yeah, but dogs are great...

Ahhhhh!

...swimmers.

Uhh...

I need a search and rescue
team at my coordinates!

Come on!

Come on!

You didn't tell me you could swim!

Ahh.

Uhh.

Aghh!

Yeah, don't worry pal.

Yeah.

We're going to find Sam and that
person who killed your partner.

You and me.

Just next time, why don't you
let me come up with the plan, huh?

But Charlie, what about Sam?

The drop? The river? How
could he survive, unless...?

Oh. He never went over.

- It was a trap.
- Mm-hmm.

And Rex and I fell right into it.

Of course! The kidnapper knew
you'd have his scent from the sleeve

and would keep trying to track him.

So he left his scent trail
right to the edge of the cliff

to make it look like
they'd both jumped off.

Only he doubled back over his trail

and that gave him time to get away.

I wish that you were part
of the team back then.

You might've saved us
from a very chilly swim.

Okay, so you had the
kidnapper on the run.

Yeah. It wasn't looking good.

- Why, what happened?
- It had gotten dark.

We were wet. There was no leads.

And on top of all that,

Joe was not very happy.

What you did was crazy!

You could have gotten yourself
killed jumping off that cliff!

It was his idea.

No, I don't have another sandwich.

Oh, hey, did you... have
you heard back from Canine

about his assessment?

Yeah, I'm asking.

- I know.
- Yeah.

Yeah, they'll make a
final decision tomorrow.

We can't let him be retired.

- I've got a couple of ideas.
- Just leave it with me.

But in the meantime
Charlie, you go home.

Get yourself some rest, okay?

Hey. That's an order.

Hey.

Rex.

What's wrong?

Police dogs are supposed

- to live with their partners.
- Yeah.

- Really?
- Yeah.

I suppose we could find
him a cage for the night.

Okay, this is it. Make yourself at home.

I find the couch is pretty comfy.

What do you say I try and
find us some food, huh?

How do you feel about ordering pizza?

You still miss your partner, huh?

Yeah.

I know.

I know.

Sometimes, they...

go away.

It'll take a while to get over them.

Huh?

Okay. Okay, yeah.

Knock it off, pal.

Yeah.

It's gonna be okay.

Oh, hey Rex!

- How's it going, buddy?
- Hi!

Hey, Jesse. You're just
the man I'm looking for.

Yeah. How did it go last night?

Uh... Great!

I found out that Rex likes pizza.

Yeah.

- He really likes pizza.
- Ah!

Listen, I need to ask you a favour.

Yeah, sure. What's up?

Well, I realized last night that
Rex can only track the kidnapper.

So if they do manage to
get Sam to his father...

Then Rex won't be able to track Sam.

Yeah, so I need something
with Sam's scent on it.

I can get it from his mother.

Can you watch him till I'm back?

Yeah yeah! For sure!

Yeah, he can hang out here with
me and all the other cool kids.

Right?

We'll have fun.

- Thanks, Jesse.
- We'll have fun, right?

Bring Sam home! Bring Sam home!

- Bring Sam home!
- Thanks for the T-shirt.

You'll find him. Won't you?

You and Rex?

We're going to do everything we can.

Bring Sam home! Bring Sam home!

Bring Sam home! Bring Sam home!

Hey, Jesse. How did it go with Rex?

- Oh yeah. Great great.
- Oh good. I thought it would.

Hey! Whoa!

Rex! Easy!

Easy! Whoa!

- What... what... what's gotten into him?
- I don't know.

- What's going on?
- I don't know.

- Why is he acting like that?
- I don't know! I don't know!

I went to go pet him. And then he...

He just went crazy.

It's like he'd smelled the
kidnapper on me, or something.

Well how is that even possible?

You touched them!

When you were leaving Sam's house!

Going through that crowd,
you touched the abductor!

Yeah, we finally had a solid lead, but,

my biggest question was

why did they go to Lisa's house?

This is footage a news
team shot of you leaving.

Bring Sam home! Bring Sam home!

Who is that? The guy
I just passed there?

Oh, that's Lisa's boss.

Runs a paper company. Nothing
more serious than a traffic ticket.

Can you go back a little?

Wait.

I touched that guy. Who is that?

I don't know. I don't
have anything on that guy.

Jesse, roll the footage ahead.

If this is our guy, I want
to see what else he's up to.

Bring Sam home! Bring Sam home!

Bring Sam home!

Is that Veronica Majors he's talking to?

Looks like they know each other.

Veronica ran an art
class that Sam attended.

What are you thinking?

What if Veronica asked Sam
about the figure in the painting?

Lisa made Sam promise

not to tell anybody
about the internet reward.

Veronica is the type of person

that Sam would feel safe
to share a secret with.

Veronica was in on it.

Yeah. And she had help from
this guy. Whoever he is.

We need to stop Veronica
before she takes off.

Find out who this guy
is, Jesse. Track him down.

- Yeah, on it.
- We're going to need a warrant

- to search Veronica's house.
- I'm already ahead of you.

Rex! Come!

Wait, guys, guys, guys. Hold up.

I just got an alert on my computer.

I know where Veronica Majors is.

She's been shot.

Think Veronica had a falling
out with her partner in crime?

Yeah, that would be my bet.

The question now is where's he got Sam?

So, this mystery man murdered Veronica.

Yeah.

But why would he do that?

I mean I get the motive to
keep all the money for himself,

but why then?

It would have been super risky.

We figured that the
exchange was about to happen

and he wanted to tie
up all the loose ends.

Hmmm. Okay, so you
were running out of time

and you had no idea how to find Sam.

Yeah.

It wasn't looking good, but,

we knew we were close.

We just needed to pick
up the trail again.

And how'd you do that?

A little help from your predecessor
in the Forensics Department.

The victim was shot at close range.

One shot to the chest.

There was no defensive wounds.

Suggests she was taken by surprise.

Maybe she trusted her killer.

You got a time of death?

Uh...

The body is pretty warm.

The blood has barely congealed.

I'd say maybe half an hour ago.

Did you find anything else in the car?

Yeah. I found a suitcase in the trunk.

Warm clothes. A raincoat.

Looks like they were packed
for inclement weather.

What have you got?
You got something, Rex?

Good find. Did you smell that?

Dimenhydrinate.

That's an anti-nauseant.

It's for motion sickness.

Or sea sickness, maybe?

Maybe they were taking Sam out by boat.

Yeah.

But from where?

So they've turned
Veronica's house upside down

and they found nothing.

You got something Jesse?

Yeah, I did some digging
into Veronica Majors.

Turns out her bank accounts are empty

and credit cards are
completely maxed out.

So she needed money.

Yeah. I also found a link to
Henry's $100,000 reward on her IP.

Sounds like motive.

Hey, Jesse. Did you
find anything on that guy

that we saw Veronica
talking with on the video?

I did. I did. His
name is Jackson Waters.

He's got a long record of
assault, fraud, extortion.

The guy's a real charmer.
I mean, most of his victims

are women he was
romantically involved with.

So were he and Veronica a couple?

I did find some pictures
of them on his social media.

How'd she get mixed up
with a guy like that?

Well, one of the
conditions of his parole

was that he had to
undergo counseling, so,

he decided to take art therapy.

Veronica's weekly art classes.

- I'll call you if anything else comes up.
- Thanks, Jesse.

Okay. So, Jackson gets
his claws into Veronica

and she ends up deep in debt.
She's desperate for money

and then Sam mentions
his dad and the reward.

Mm-hmm. Then Veronica goes to Jackson

and they hatch a plan
nut she has no idea

that Jackson plans to kill her

and keep all the money for himself.

Yeah, but why would Jackson

- chance coming back to Sam's house?
- I don't know.

Maybe Rex has an answer.

Veronica was my best friend.

She couldn't have been part of this.

There's little doubt that she was.

Also a man named Jackson Waters.

- Jackson?
- Uh-huh.

That's her boyfriend.

I let those monsters take my son?

Don't do that to yourself.

We're close to finding Sam
but we need you to think.

Has Jackson been here the last few days?

Just after you visited.

Okay. Well,

I'd like to have Rex take a look around.

Anything to help.

Alright, pal.

Do your thing.

Track.

What's in here?

That's where I kept Sam's real passport.

It's empty.

Oh no.

If Jackson needs Sam's real passport

in order to make this plan work

that must mean they need to
get him across the border.

Border Patrol would be looking
for a young boy named Sam Hansen.

Not Sam Crawford.

Talk to me, Jesse.

I just found out that
Jackson is staying in a house

he inherited from his gran.

It's across the harbour in Fort Amherst.

Right by the pier.

Boats. That's where
they're making the exchange.

Hopefully, we're not too late.

Rex. Rex, come here.

Track it!

I'll follow Rex. You look around.

You got it.

Help!

Shut up! Shut up and move! Let's go!

Uhh!

SJPD!

Stop right there.

Stop right there! Hands
where I can see them!

That's it Rex, go!

- Stop right there!
- Help!

Ughh!

Ughhh.

Don't move!

Sam, you okay?

- Yeah.
- Get up!

Hands behind your back!

Where's Henry Crawford?

It was supposed to be so simple.

No one was supposed to get hurt.

You've got a lot of nerve saying that.

You abducted a boy!

You killed a cop and your partner!

If you've got a shred of decency,

you're going to tell us exactly
where we can find Sam's father.

He's in a boat offshore,

waiting for me to bring him the kid.

You got coordinates for that boat?

Yeah.

I'll contact the Coast Guard.

Let's go.

Hey, Sam.

He never stopped looking for me.

He saved me.

Sam!

Mom!

Not a bad day's work, partner.

It's okay to be a little nervous.

I get a little nervous
about assessments too.

Yeah.

You did a great job, you know?

I don't care what the decision is.

I'm not letting anything happen to you.

Promise.

Yeah.

What's the verdict?

The Canine Unit will not reinstate
Rex under any circumstances.

No, this is...

- Look, Joe...
- Charlie.

He saved a kid's life today.
He found his partner's killer.

- He should be getting a medal, not...
- Just... listen.

Rex is not going back to Canine Unit,

because they've agreed to
let him be partnered with you.

- What?
- He'll be your responsibility

day and night.

This is on a trial basis

and subject to review, understand?

- Yeah. Yeah.
- And to be perfectly clear,

I'm not comfortable with any of this,

at all.

It's your call, Charlie.

You know what? It's, uh...

It's up to both of us.

What do you think partner?

Okay.

Okay.

Okay.

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. I need...

- I need tissue.
- Here.

- I always bring some on this day.
- Thank you.

You do the honours, pal?

You come here every year?

We do. On the anniversary
of Grace's death.

What about Lisa and Sam?

Did they get to stay together, too?

Well...

Maybe you should ask them yourself.

I'm glad it all worked
out with you and Rex.

Me too.

But you never owned a dog, did you?

I knew it.

You're a good boy, Rex.
