Highlander (1992–1998): Season 2, Episode 5 - An Eye for an Eye - full transcript

When Richie interferes with Immortal Annie Devlin and her IRA gang, she vows revenge. Meanwhile, Duncan starts teaching Richie. In flashback, Duncan rescues Annie from a massacre but refuses to help her crusade.

He is immortal.

Born in the Highlands of Scotland
400 hundred years ago.

He's not alone.

There are others like him.

Some good,

some evil.

For centuries he's battled
the forces of darkness

with holy ground his only refuge.

He cannot die,

unless you take his head and with it his power.

In the end, there can be only one.

He is Duncan MacLeod,

the Highlander.

Here we are

Born to be kings

We're the princes of the universe.

I am Immortal.

I have inside me blood of kings.

I have no rival.

No man can be my equal.

Take me to the future of the world.

Hey, MacLeod, you're the new owner?

That's right.

Why did you buy this place?

Because it was for sale.

Well, I'll just pack up my office, all right?

I wanted you to run it for me.

Do I get a raise?

Don't push it, Charlie.

Hey, Charlie, there's no hot water again!

Hey, a new heater is gonna cost you four-fifty.
I'm coming.

Hey, Mac, You hungry? I'm hungry.

What's new?

Come on, we have to eat.
Let's go. I'm buying.

All right.

"Eye For An Eye"

On schedule?

Dead on schedule.

Sweet.

Yeah, thanks, Rico. Take care.

Rico chilly dogs.
There's nothing on Earth like them.

Good thing you're one of us, you might
actually recover from those stuff.

- You sure?
- Yeah.

Remember Tessa loved these things.

Mac, I'm sorry.
I didn't mean anything.

She was part of our lives, Richie.
Never pretend she wasn't.

I don't, I keep waking up every morning ...

Expecting her to be there?

Yeah.

Get used to it. It won't be
the last time it happens to you.

When does it start getting easier?

It doesn't.

He will be out any minute, now.

I keep waiting to feel different, like something's
gonna tell me how to be, what to do.

What were you expecting, a set of instructions?

Mac, even Superman had.

You're not Superman, Richie.

There's an Immortal nearby, I can feel it.

Smile you, fat bastard.

Good morning.

Tommy, take the ambassador!

Excuse me, mister. You must be a hot dog
kind of guy. Personally, I like chili cheese.

No!

No!

No, Tommy, no!

"Chuck Solis"!
"Chuck Solis"!

Come on, come on, hurry!

Mister ambassador, you are okay sir?

Yes, thank you.

You're a dead man.

She strike you as the sincere type?

I was afraid of that.

I was staring right down the barrel of that
creep's gun! I can't believe it.

Mac, right down the barrel,
and I didn't even blink!

Is that how it feels every time?

No.

Only when you're a damn fool.

What's eating you?

That was a MAC 10, Richie! Forty five rounds
per second and a half. Do you know how many
people could have been killed?

Yes, but nobody was.

Because you got lucky! What if she'd hit you?

Mac, I can't die.

That's right!

You take fifty slugs in the chest and
you survive. How do you explain that?

As it was, a man died and
he's not coming back.

He deserved it!

Did he?

Did you have a good look at his soul?

You better start learning the game,
and I mean now.

Fine, you teach me.

Come on, get up! Get up!

You don't get off the mat.

Try it again.

Get up.

Come on, get up!

And again. Come here. Back here.

Get up!

Come on, try and take me!

You're going to have to do better than that.
Come on, once again.
At least get the yell right.

- No more. Finish.
- Finished?

What are you doing off the mat without your
shoes? Come on, get your shoes!
You haven't even started to learn!

Learn what? Fifty ways to land on my head?
Why are you doing this to me for?
What the hell did I do?

What did you do?

What did you do?

She's coming for you, Richie, and she's
only the first. You've got to be good.
You've got to be ready.

Oh, Mac killing me is not going
to make me ready.

It wouldn't?

You know what I think?

That this isn't about me, or her.
It's about Tessa.

Tessa's got nothing to do with this.

Bull Mac, you can't get past it. I know.

You've seen a lot of people die. But you
had to be the hero! You sent us out to the car
that night, you could have been there.

Let it go, Richie.

No. You look me in the eye and you tell me
you don't blame yourself for her death.

I'm trying to protect you from Annie Devlin!

Annie Devlin's in jail, she can't hurt me!

I'll see you around.

You can fight, MacLeod.

Better than any man I've ever seen.
With you on our side.

I'm sorry, Annie.
You've put yourselves in danger for no reason.

Dammit, how can you say no?

Because this isn't my fight.
Or yours.

Kerry's the man I love.

His fight is my fight, it should be yours.

How can you turn away?

Experience. I know how these things end.

It'll end in freedom.

No. It'll end in death.

For some of you maybe, maybe for some
of them. But mainly for the women and
children who'll get in the way.

Damn your stubborn hide, MacLeod.
Well, at least drink with us.

To the cause.

No, Annie. To happiness.

Kerry?

Come on.

No.

Come on.

Come on. Go!

I can't run anymore.

It's okay, I think we lost 'em.

How much farther?

It's just over there.

I'm sorry about Kerry.

Don't worry, he'll have his revenge.

Come on.

Come on.

No, MacLeod, you go on.

Annie, you can't kill them all.

I can try.

Why don't you stay? It'll be a beautiful war.

War's never beautiful, Annie.

Leave with me.

This will never end.

It will when we win.
When there's no one left alive to fight.

Goodbye, Annie.

Where you going?

My place the zoo anywhere
there's no mat for you to dump me on.

You come in second to Annie,
you'll die forever.

I'll take my chances.

We know all about you and your pals.
You're an outlaw even to your own.

So save yourself fifty years hard time and
tell us where your people are.

Go to hell.

That's original.
What's your real name, missy?

Your types have been using "Annie Devlin"
for seventy-five years.

I'm well preserved.

You're a disgrace to all of us is what you are.

And you're a pig who cares more about
his own fat ass than his people.

Don't you talk to me about my own people.
How many of my people have your murdered?

Only the traitors.

You'll be eighty years old and all used up
before you see daylight again.

I think I'll be seeing it sooner than that.

Not unless you give us something
damn interesting.

You want something interesting?

For once in your life do the right thing.

Why?

I don't know what it is but it ain't doin'
you any good looking at it.

You want something?

Look, MacLeod, I've seen men
chewed up before.

Let me worry about it.

Yeah, well, it ain't just you, man. It's Richie.

Look, I know you're my boss and
maybe it's none of my business.

You right, it's not.

No. Yeah, but I'm gonna tell you anyway!
You gotta back off, man. You're laying into
the kid too hard!

It has to be done.

Why? Because of that terrorist woman?
If that's what it is, you can stop worrying.

Why?

It's all over the news. She took a header
from the tenth floor of the Federal Building.

She's dead, man.

How's it going?

Mac, hey. I thought I'd work out a little.

Good.

- Listen, you were right.
- I was wrong.

Mac, I was wrong about what
I said about Tessa. I'm sorry.

No, you where right.
I've just been losing a lot of people lately.
I don't want to lose you too.

That makes two of us. So, what now tough guy?
You gonna beat the hell out of me again?

No, I'll take it a little easier on you this time.

Good.

Richie, look, Annie's escaped.

Don't look so bummed.

She'll be so busy hiding from the cops,
she won't have time to come after me.

The cops think she's dead.

So, then they won't be after her?
But she would be after me.

Yeah.

Open your legs and stance here.
Flex your leg.

Take the blade in your right hand.
Bring in that position.

Bend your legs. Prepare for parrying here.
Then you cut forward. Cut. Cut.

Parry. Cut.

Cut.

Launch.

Stay there.

Stay there. Don't move.

When you have to wait there,
bent down your foot,

to maintain your balance. You have to keep
your balance. Stretch your leg. Stretch.
The launch is there.

Good.

Back in, parry. Come backwards.

Here. Here. Backwards.

Go, parry, cut, parry, cut, launch.
Good. And back.

Parry, cut, parry, cut, launch.
Now go back to parry again.

Show me parrying.

That's a little low. You're going to have to
bring it up a little higher otherwise
you're going to get done.

Don't bring it down here. It's not gonna save you.
You'll have this high. Here. Okay?

Take it to the other side.

Stop to parry the blade. Attack.

Come on. Come on.

High and low. The other side.

Here, here, here, here.

Come on. Come on.

To the right and to the left, go, go,
has to protect the legs too, okay?

Look, I'm going to teach you
Anne's favorite moves.

It's your best chance at stopping her.
I want you to come for a lateral cut
to my right shoulder.

I should come under your blade, like this, bring
it back over, this way, trapping your arm

and coming around for a fatal blow. Okay?

A little faster this time.

What happens if she does anything else?

Do not worry.

There is a counter to it, though.

When she has you here,
like this step back, okay? Ready go.

Now, envelop the blade and disarm her.

Then she's at your mercy. Try that again.
Right down from there, a little fast
this time. Ready? Go.

Thanks, Steve.

I never thought they'd get her.

She died a martyr of the cause.

To Annie.

Nick. Neal. I didn't knew you cared.

Annie!

I thought I told you to meet me
at the lighthouse.

We waited, but then we heard you were dead!

Keep it down or we will be.
You believe everything you read?

So, how the hell did you escape?

That doesn't matter.
What does is the work we have to do.

The Ambassador.

Later. The kid first.

We know where we can find him.

Turn your hip. Turn your hip. Both hands,
one two. Yes. One, two come on.

A little harder, focus. Come on!

That's good, that's good.

You and MacLeod work things out alright, man?

Close enough.
Charlie, I'm done.

Come on! So soon?

I'd like to do, Charlie but I got a new bike to pick
up and a friend I haven't seen for a long time.

Want some advice then, Richie?

Talk to me. Stance? Shoulders? What?

Shower, man.
Your friend thank you for it.

Thanks, Charlie.
Catch you later.

- Thanks for the deal, Ron. Take it easy.
- Take care, Richie.

Glad you could make it.

What's the matter, forget your sword?

Sorry, I asked.

Don't worry. I will take your head but
first I'm going to hurt you.

What for? Trying to save an old man's life?

We were executing an enemy.

Don't flatter yourself, lady. That was murder.
You were the one with the gun.

And you interfered.
A good man was killed.

That good man was a butcher.

His name is Tommy. He was my husband.

This is nothing lady, I've had the crap
beat out of me by the best.

What's your name?

Richie.

Say goodbye, Richie.

Goodbye, Richie.

- You're still worried about him?
Come on, the woman is dead.
- Right.

What the hell happened to you?

You were right, Charlie.
I should've taken that shower.

It's alright. I'll take him.

How you get here?

I drove.

Adrenaline's a wonderful thing.

We've got to have somebody look at him.

No. He's gonna be alright.

What the hell are you talking about?
We got to get him to an hospital.

No doctor.

Looks worse than it is, Charlie.
Besides I think my insurance ran out.

Fine. Your funeral.

Take it easy.

You'll be fine.

That's very reassuring, Mac but it still hurts.

You got lucky this time, Richie.

You call this lucky?

You still have your head. I know Annie
she missed you once. It won't happen again.

Fine, so you speed up my training.

Not me. Charlie.

Charlie? What are you gonna do? Thanks.

If we wait here, it's her game.

She sets the time and the place.
I have to get to her first.

How are you gonna find her, Mac?
It's a big city.

I don't know.

Actually, didn't she said something to one of
her guys after the hit at the consulate?

Like what?

I can't remember.

Think.

I can't remember. It was gibberish.

What did it sound like?

Sounded Chuck Solis. I must be wrong.
Sounds like a baseball player.

Taigh-sholais?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. That's it.

It's Gaelic. It means lighthouse.

Go back to the car. Take a ride up the hill
and wait for me.

Come again?

I said go back to the car and take a drive.

What's wrong?

Nothing I can't handle.

Are we enemies?

If it comes to it.

Not by my choice.

I couldn't have beaten you before, MacLeod.
But now I think I just might.

You might it now but I guess it would be a shame
to waste this. It's Irish a hundred years old.

Damn you, Duncan MacLeod.

- To happiness.
- To happiness.

To the cause.

Alright, to happiness.

I still don't believe it, man.

Like I said, I'm a fast healer.
Besides, it was mostly bruises.

So, Charlie. How did you get into
this business anyway?

It was love, man.

My mom was black, and daddy was Italian.
The trouble is we lived in a tough neighborhood.

And the "brothers" figured that I was Italian, so,
if they caught me they used do that to me you see.

And for similar reasons, the Italians figured
I didn't belong, so they try to do this.

Or even.

So I got sick and tired of get my butt kicked,
if you know what I mean.

Yeah, Charlie. I'm beginning to.

So, I joined the SEALS.

Travel, meet exotic enemies.

Hey, I learned a trade, man.

Yeah, yeah, right, right. I'm sure you did.

Won't do you any good, you know?

What won't?

Getting me drunk. Acting sentimental
about the old days.

Why not?

Why not what?

Why not get sentimental about the old days?

Because I'm still gonna to kill Richie.

Why?

Won't bring Tommy back.

Won't bring anyone back.

Nothing you do brings anyone back.
Once they're dead nothing do.

You lost someone too, didn't you?

So we have something in common.

Not bad.

A little rough around the edges, but you got
a real feel for it. Kind of reminds me of me.

Thanks, Charlie. I'd say we come
from similar neighborhoods.

It ain't nothing similar about us, man.

You think nobody else has problems?

Yeah, but mine came from being unique.
You know what I mean?

I think I can empathize.

Empathize.

I want to know one thing.
Why do you think that I'd come back to Dublin?

You abandoned me.

I never abandoned you, Annie.

You abandoned the cause!

I never had your cause!

No, you just had your own!

It wasn't your cause either, Annie.

Liar!

How many boys did you send to their deaths?
How many? Like Kerry and Tommy
how many more?

Damn it, MacLeod!

Come on!

Annie, I'm warning you.

Come on, fight! That's it, come on!
Fight, damn it!

No.

Live forever, but I feel so dead inside.

Are you dead inside, MacLeod?
Are you dead or are you alive?

It never happened.

Funny, seem really enough to me.

Don't start on me, MacLeod, you know
what I mean it was an accident.

Maybe we should have had that
accident a years ago.

We would have. Didn't you know that?

If I would have joined you.

It doesn't matter now. I know what I am
and what I have to do.

You don't have to do anything. Last night-

Last night we were drunk!

Is that all it was?

Really it doesn't matter, MacLeod.

It's a blood debt, you know that.
Richie's life for Tommy's, I have no choice.

Then neither will I. If you come after Richie,
you'll have to go through me.

MacLeod, it really was a grand night.

You found her?

By the lighthouse, yeah.

So, you were gone the whole night.
You fought, right?

Not exactly.

Not exactly? What you mean not exactly?

Richie, it's complicated. Don't ask me to explain,
but she's coming for you.

I want you to get out to the city
until she gives up.

I don't believe this!
What have I been busting my butt for?

To learn to survive, not to get slaughtered.

Not get slaughtered? Look Mac, maybe
you couldn't face her, but I can!

Richie, this isn't about guts.
She wants your head, and I can't kill her.
Don't you understand?

I understand that I'm supposed to face
an immortal. And you want me to cut and run.

I want you to live!

Hey, Richie, you training today or what, man?

Yeah, Charlie. I'll be there in one second.
Alright, I'll go.

I tell Charlie we are leaving.

No, that's okay. I'll do it myself.

Charlie, where's Richie?

He just left.

Where did he go?

I don't know, he just blew past me, alright?

Damn.

MacLeod! MacLeod, what the hell is going on?

Watch my bag.

Where is MacLeod?

He's not here. It's just you and me.

Good. Then you've saved me a lot of trouble.

Maybe not.

Somebody has been teaching you.

You can learn a lot from watching television.

Tommy wasn't afraid to die, are you?

Damn right.

But mostly I'm just pissed.

So am I!

You're better than I thought.

Yeah and I'm not done yet.

Wrong!

Do it!

Do it! I would.

You're a fool, you know? I'll come for you.

No, you won't.

He killed Tommy.

And he gave you your life in return.

This has to end, Annie.

How are you doing?

Fine, perfect. I'm alive, alright?

You don't look too happy about it.

I couldn't kill her, Mac.
I mean, that's what I'm supposed to do, right?

Sometimes.

I couldn't do it.

I thought I could, but I couldn't.

Maybe I'm just not cut out for this.

You're still who you are, Richie.

You don't change when you become
immortal, just live longer.

Hopefully.

Oh boy, I'd said I got a lot to learn.

You still got time.

Take good care of it.

Live with it, make it part of you.
Might be the only friend you have.
