Hetty Feather (2015–2020): Season 5, Episode 9 - The Search - full transcript
Hetty, on the run in London, is shocked to discover an old friend in the workhouse. Back at Calendar Hall, the gang have a plan to prove Hetty is innocent and that Ambrose is the real thief.
The Dawn Star has been stolen.
I didn't take it.
Lock her up.
I will take the jewel
and I will sell it for you.
And I will be forced to tell them
I saw your Jack start the fire.
Go to London, sell it quickly.
They think I'm coming back.
Don't you give them
reason to doubt that.
I'm afraid to say,
I strongly suspect your father.
So, you don't think it was Hetty?
That poor girl.
In the blink of an eye
everything can change.
I went from having a job,
a roof over my head,
friends I loved to being
a fugitive on the run.
And all because of
other people's greed.
Grenford.
The Dawn Star was Ashok's by right,
and yet, there were others
determined to keep
it for themselves.
I knew I had to clear my name
and return to Calendar Hall.
But who in the world
could help me now?
Little did I know the answer
was waiting just around the corner.
You rang, master Ashok?
I'd like you to start making
arrangements for my voyage home.
I don't understand.
I plan to take the next
boat from Southampton.
The Dawn Star's gone.
There's nothing here for me now.
There's still a chance
you might get it back.
Ambrose is long gone.
That doesn't mean we should just
give up though, does it?
Maybe some things are
best left in the past.
Is there nothing I can do
to change your mind?
The Dawn Star's lost forever and now
I must return to my family.
If anyone asks, mountaintop
field, all right?
Why?
Where are you going?
I have to find Hetty.
She's scared and on her own.
London's a big city, Jack.
So what, we just give up on her?
No, of course not.
Unless...
Unless what?
Unless you were in
on this all along.
Yeah, you and Flo
are thick as thieves.
Maybe Ambrose cut you a deal?
Come here and say that!
Unless you were in
on this all along... Stop it!
Fighting isn't going
to get Hetty back. Lizzie's right.
And it's not just Hetty we've got to
worry about. How do you mean?
If we don't get the Dawn Star back,
Ashok's going to leave.
We have to find Ambrose.
How do you suppose we do that?
Stay close to Flo?
If anyone's going to lead
us to him it's her.
What makes you think Flo's got
anything to do with it?
Because she's a thief
just like her old man.
Not so fast, I'll be
answering callers today.
But Lady Grenford...
Impertinence will not be tolerated.
Do I make myself clear?
Now, we need fresh
flowers in every room.
Yes Lady Grenford. Lady Grenford?
What is it?
We're ever so worried about Hetty.
I wondered if one of us
might be able to go out later
and start looking for her?
There's no need, I've already
instructed the authorities to start
looking for Hetty.
Everyone will be so relieved.
Well, I'm glad to hear it.
Now, back to work.
Ah, Frederick.
If you could...
..come through to the drawing
room, please.
So what is it you want
pawning this time?
I'm assuming that's why I'm here.
I've got a bit of business for you.
Who's that man?
I don't know.
But I intend to find out.
# The boy I love is up in the
gallery
# The boy I love is looking now at
me
# There he is, can't you see?
# Waving his handkerchief
# As merry as a Robin that sings in
a tree... #
Thank you, sir.
# Now if I were a Duchess
and had a lot of money
# I'd give it to the boy that's
going to marry me. #
That's it, the show's over.
Did you know begging
was a criminal offence?
If the magistrate had his way,
it'd be three weeks hard labour.
Please don't send me to prison.
I can't exactly leave you out
here on the streets, can I?
Don't look so frightened,
I'm here to help you.
Thank you.
Just so happens I know one
of the wardens at the workhouse
on Cleveland Street.
The workhouse?
I'm not saying it's going
to be easy, it's a lot safer
than being out here on your own.
Please don't send me
to the workhouse.
It's not up for discussion,
I'm afraid.
It's either that or the magistrate.
So let's get moving, shall we?
You have reliable contacts in
Hatton Garden, is that right?
Some of the best diamond
dealers in the business.
Why do you ask?
Because, I have something
that might be of interest to them.
And how did such a jewel
make your acquaintance?
Let's just call it
a family heirloom.
So what do you think?
I'm no expert but,
I'd say it's legit all right.
And what sort of price do
you think it would get
if we sold it privately?
Enough to buy back
your reputation I'd say.
And a couple of servants
while you're at it.
Who are you?
Mr Fortescue is an old
acquaintance of mine,
not that it's any business of yours.
Is he here to find the Dawn Star?
How very perceptive of you.
Mr Fortescue is a detective
from Scotland Yard.
I am?
Now hurry along.
We have private police
matters to discuss.
What are you hiding
behind your back?
That is quite enough
of your insolence, young lady.
It's a clue...
..which I am unable to divulge
at this moment in time.
I understand.
I am familiar with the works
of Mr Arthur Conan Doyle.
Well, then I suggest
you return to the library
without any more fuss.
Do I make myself clear?
If the police are involved I'm out.
Last thing I want is any trouble.
Do you think I would be foolish
enough to involve the Constabulary?
I want that jewel sold and out of my
hands as quickly as possible.
What do you think you're doing?
I can't exactly sell it
on a promise, can I?
You will return in two hours
with the jeweller in question.
Until then,
the Dawn Star stays with me.
That's quite some heirloom.
You sure no-one will
notice it's gone?
Everything's been taken care of.
I've left nothing to chance.
Another beggar for you.
Try and keep her safe.
Come on.
All right.
Well, don't just stand there
gawping, there's work to be done.
This is your uniform.
As soon as you change, you report
to me in the laundry.
All right?
There's been a mistake.
I shouldn't be here.
I'm a housemaid at Calendar Hall.
You are nothing but a dirty beggar
so I'd lose them airs and graces
if I were you.
From now on, you abide
by the rules of the workhouse.
Do you hear me?
Now get to work.
And you put your old rags in there.
Chop chop!
Oi, get to it.
You lot have had it in for Flo since
she started.
That's because she locked me
in the cellar.
I know she only did it
because she was scared of Ambrose
but that doesn't make it right,
does it?
Well, why didn't you say something?
You were so friendly with her.
You know what really
sticks in my throat?
All those times I defended you.
You go near my sister again
and it won't just be your old man
on the run.
Do you understand me?
You took your time.
I got lost.
I don't want to hear your excuses,
I get enough of that from gobby one
over there.
Well, don't just stand there,
them sheets ain't going to wash
themselves, are they?
Oh, you getting lippy now,
are you?
Get your back into it.
I'll give you sore hands.
Sheila?
What is all this commotion?
It's Master Ashok, Lady Grenford.
He leaves for Southampton
in the morning.
Ashok?
Is this true?
Well, I for one will be very
sorry to see you go.
Lady Grenford?
Thank you.
Whatever for?
For showing me such kindness.
What are you doing here?
I could ask you the same question.
Less talking, you two.
Sorry, Maude.
I'm only here until my Wilfred
gets back from Abyssinia.
Abyssinia?
He's stationed there
with his battalion.
When he gets home we're going to
move to Broadstairs.
I might even open my own little
tea shop with Mrs Whittock.
Sheila, you and Private Sturgess,
there was no engagement,
was there?
I was too good for him anyway.
You'll want to count those loaves.
They diddled us out of three
last time.
Aggie?
Oh, don't tell me you forgot
the barley bread?
Lady Grenford asked
for it specifically.
I found this inside.
It's from Ambrose.
I recognise his handwriting.
Covered market, 3.30?
So that's why Flo wanted to get
her hands on the bread order.
She told me this morning.
What do we do?
So how did you end up here?
Well, I had no money
and I couldn't exactly go back
to Calendar Hall, could I?
I would have helped you.
I don't need your charity, Feather.
So why are you here then?
Other than to gloat?
I lost my job.
They finally get fed up with your
boring stories, Feather?
The Butler Ambrose framed me.
He said if I didn't leave
then he'd have Jack
arrested for arson.
There's never a dull
day with you, is there?
And then a police constable
caught me begging.
He said if I didn't come here
then I'd end up in prison.
So that's it?
You're just going to wash dirty
sheets for the rest of your life?
What else can I do?
Everyone thinks I'm a thief.
You can get back out there
and clear your name.
It's too late.
Here we go, get out the violins.
Had you down as a lot
of things, Feather,
but a coward wasn't one of them.
Thank you, sir.
Skiving off already.
The warden said
I could use the privy.
Here, here.
This fancy hall of yours,
you reckon they'll be
an opening for a housekeeper?
You'll have to speak
to Mrs Calendar.
Well, she's not exactly fussy
who she employs, is she?
How do you mean?
Well, your butler got his
feet under the table,
don't see why she should
turn her nose up at me.
You know Ambrose?
Back to using that name,
used to be Simpson at one point.
Before he had that daughter of his.
Used to talk knock-about together
down Deptford way.
That is until he got himself into
a spot of bother with the police.
What happened? Done some big house
over up Hyde Park Corner.
Not that they ever managed
to catch him, slippery so-and-so.
Got a nasty temper on him and all.
Oi, I thought you was
going to the privy?
Ambrose is wanted by the police.
Proper little detective, aren't you?
He set fire to the barn.
What if everyone's in danger?
Even if they are, we can't just come
and go as we please.
There's got to be a way out, surely.
And what if that
constable catches you?
I'd sooner that than be a coward.
Please, Sheila,
I can't do this on my own.
I rue the day I met you, Feather.
What do we do now?
Follow her, of course.
Agnes, you hold the fort here.
Gideon, you go and fetch Ashok.
What are we waiting for?
This is our chance
to get the Dawn Star.
You need to come with me,
Master Ashok, we're going to get
the Dawn Star.
How?
There's no time to explain,
please just hurry.
DOOR OPENS
Yes, the bags there.
Thank you.
Where is everyone?
Hello?
Mrs Calendar, we weren't
expecting you back so soon.
So it would appear.
The house looks positively deserted.
Any word on Miss Emily?
Oh, thankfully the issue with
her schooling has been resolved.
You must be so relieved, ma'am.
I'm just glad I received the
telegram before boarding the ship.
Ashok, Gideon, what are you looking
in the doorway for?
What did I tell
you about answering...
..the door?
Lady Grenford,
you look in rude health.
Mother!
Constance, darling.
Ambrose is a thief.
And Hetty's run away.
Enough of your fibs, Constance.
It's true, I'm afraid.
Agnes, could you please help
the nursemaid with the children?
Time to batten down the hatches.
Will you stop wriggling?!
It's not exactly comfy in here.
Quiet, the warden's coming.
And what do we have here?
Clean washing from the laundry, sir.
I'll be the judge of that.
A bit lumpy, isn't it?
And your folding leaves
a lot to be desired.
Go on, clear off.
Now, Feather, before someone sees.
There's an old gate that way,
turn right and go around.
Come on, let's go.
I can't.
Sheila?
Do you know what the punishment is
for people who leave
the workhouse without permission?
Someone got beaten last week.
I'm sure she'll let you have
your job back.
Don't you think
I've been humiliated enough?
I can't leave you here, Sheila.
Just go, will you?
Before someone sees us.
As soon as I clear my name
I'll come back for you, I promise.
And you will get your
happily ever after.
Because if anyone
deserves it, it's you.
Stupid soapsuds,
they get in your eye.
And don't let anyone
give you a hard time,
you hear?
You're Sheila Ormsby, don't forget.
Friends forever.
Friends forever.
Thank you.
What do we do when Ambrose turns up?
We get him to hand over the
Dawn Star before we take him
to the police.
Do you think it's going
to be that easy?
No, that's why we need
to ambush him first.
And how do you suppose we do that?
I haven't thought that bit
through yet, have I?
Come on.
So you're telling me
that in a matter of a few days
you find and then manage
to lose the Dawn Star?
Ambrose is exposed as the thief,
whilst Hetty's left
to fend for herself?
A mere hiccup, no more.
Lady Grenford, two gentlemen
are here to see you.
Show them in, Agnes.
No, no, send them away,
I'd much sooner here about dear
Emily's schooling.
Now, Agnes.
You look anxious, Lady Grenford,
is there something you'd like
to tell me?
Can I ask what your business is
with Lady Grenford?
It's of a personal nature.
I've never seen these
gentlemen before in my life.
Well, that's funny,
you seem to know them this morning.
Thank you, Agnes.
At least someone knows the value
of honesty around here.
Oh, for goodness' sake.
Agnes, fetch the smelling salts
for Lady Grenford.
BABY CRIES
Mrs Calendar?
No-one is going anywhere
until I get some answers.
Is that understood?
Just go, you silly fool.
Before she comes back
and starts asking questions.
Oi, work to be done.
Do it yourself.
Who do you think you are?
I'm Sheila Ormsby,
purveyor of the best shortcrust
pastry this side of Hampstead.
Do you have a problem with that?
Didn't think so.
There.
Driver, stop the carriage.
Get back.
Where's Grenford?
She's at the house.
Constables?
No, some man came
to the house, no uniforms.
Good, good.
Now's our chance.
To do what?
I thought I was coming with you?
To France?
Not while she's got my jewel.
Lady Grenford has it?
She double-crossed me.
She's good.
You can't go back there.
I'm not leaving without that
diamond.
Dad, please. Let's just leave.
I'll look after us.
Stop whimpering, stop whingeing,
get on the carriage, will you?
We need to help her.
Flo's not our problem.
She's scared of him.
Have you forgotten all of the
horrible things she did to you?
She's one of us, Jack.
If Ambrose has the Dawn Star,
why's he going to Calendar Hall?
Stay back.
I was more determined than ever
to clear my name and return
the Dawn Star.
There was something
ominous in the air.
A dark shadow was about
to fall on Calendar Hall.
Although, none of us
could have predicted the trouble
that lay ahead.
Where have you been? What happened?
Argh!
What was that?
It's locked.
Lady Grenford has the Dawn Star
and Ambrose wants it.
Tell the truth.
Agnes?
Edwin?
Where is it?
You can't hurt the family.
You're worried now?
We know you're in there, come out.
Stop him!
I didn't take it.
Lock her up.
I will take the jewel
and I will sell it for you.
And I will be forced to tell them
I saw your Jack start the fire.
Go to London, sell it quickly.

What if everyone's in danger?
Even if they are, we can't just come
and go as we please.
There's got to be a way out, surely.
And what if that
constable catches you?
I'd sooner that than be a coward.
Please, Sheila,
I can't do this on my own.
I rue the day I met you, Feather.
What do we do now?
Follow her, of course.
Agnes, you hold the fort here.
Gideon, you go and fetch Ashok.
What are we waiting for?
This is our chance
to get the Dawn Star.
You need to come with me,
Master Ashok, we're going to get
the Dawn Star.
How?
There's no time to explain,
please just hurry.
DOOR OPENS
Yes, the bags there.
Thank you.
Where is everyone?
Hello?
Mrs Calendar, we weren't
expecting you back so soon.
So it would appear.
The house looks positively deserted.
Any word on Miss Emily?
Oh, thankfully the issue with
her schooling has been resolved.
You must be so relieved, ma'am.
I'm just glad I received the
telegram before boarding the ship.
Ashok, Gideon, what are you looking
in the doorway for?
What did I tell
you about answering...
..the door?
Lady Grenford,
you look in rude health.
Mother!
Constance, darling.
Ambrose is a thief.
And Hetty's run away.
Enough of your fibs, Constance.
It's true, I'm afraid.
Agnes, could you please help
the nursemaid with the children?
Time to batten down the hatches.
Will you stop wriggling?!
It's not exactly comfy in here.
Quiet, the warden's coming.
And what do we have here?
Clean washing from the laundry, sir.
I'll be the judge of that.
A bit lumpy, isn't it?
And your folding leaves
a lot to be desired.
Go on, clear off.
Now, Feather, before someone sees.
There's an old gate that way,
turn right and go around.
Come on, let's go.
I can't.
Sheila?
Do you know what the punishment is
for people who leave
the workhouse without permission?
Someone got beaten last week.
I'm sure she'll let you have
your job back.
Don't you think
I've been humiliated enough?
I can't leave you here, Sheila.
Just go, will you?
Before someone sees us.
As soon as I clear my name
I'll come back for you, I promise.
And you will get your
happily ever after.
Because if anyone
deserves it, it's you.
Stupid soapsuds,
they get in your eye.
And don't let anyone
give you a hard time,
you hear?
You're Sheila Ormsby, don't forget.
Friends forever.
Friends forever.
Thank you.
What do we do when Ambrose turns up?
We get him to hand over the
Dawn Star before we take him
to the police.
Do you think it's going
to be that easy?
No, that's why we need
to ambush him first.
And how do you suppose we do that?
I haven't thought that bit
through yet, have I?
Come on.
So you're telling me
that in a matter of a few days
you find and then manage
to lose the Dawn Star?
Ambrose is exposed as the thief,
whilst Hetty's left
to fend for herself?
A mere hiccup, no more.
Lady Grenford, two gentlemen
are here to see you.
Show them in, Agnes.
No, no, send them away,
I'd much sooner here about dear
Emily's schooling.
Now, Agnes.
You look anxious, Lady Grenford,
is there something you'd like
to tell me?
Can I ask what your business is
with Lady Grenford?
It's of a personal nature.
I've never seen these
gentlemen before in my life.
Well, that's funny,
you seem to know them this morning.
Thank you, Agnes.
At least someone knows the value
of honesty around here.
Oh, for goodness' sake.
Agnes, fetch the smelling salts
for Lady Grenford.
BABY CRIES
Mrs Calendar?
No-one is going anywhere
until I get some answers.
Is that understood?
Just go, you silly fool.
Before she comes back
and starts asking questions.
Oi, work to be done.
Do it yourself.
Who do you think you are?
I'm Sheila Ormsby,
purveyor of the best shortcrust
pastry this side of Hampstead.
Do you have a problem with that?
Didn't think so.
There.
Driver, stop the carriage.
Get back.
Where's Grenford?
She's at the house.
Constables?
No, some man came
to the house, no uniforms.
Good, good.
Now's our chance.
To do what?
I thought I was coming with you?
To France?
Not while she's got my jewel.
Lady Grenford has it?
She double-crossed me.
She's good.
You can't go back there.
I'm not leaving without that
diamond.
Dad, please. Let's just leave.
I'll look after us.
Stop whimpering, stop whingeing,
get on the carriage, will you?
We need to help her.
Flo's not our problem.
She's scared of him.
Have you forgotten all of the
horrible things she did to you?
She's one of us, Jack.
If Ambrose has the Dawn Star,
why's he going to Calendar Hall?
Stay back.
I was more determined than ever
to clear my name and return
the Dawn Star.
There was something
ominous in the air.
A dark shadow was about
to fall on Calendar Hall.
Although, none of us
could have predicted the trouble
that lay ahead.
Where have you been? What happened?
Argh!
What was that?
It's locked.
Lady Grenford has the Dawn Star
and Ambrose wants it.
Tell the truth.
Agnes?
Edwin?
Where is it?
You can't hurt the family.
You're worried now?
We know you're in there, come out.
Stop him!
