Hetty Feather (2015–2020): Season 5, Episode 7 - The Secret Door - full transcript
The gang are in danger when Rosamund leaves Lady Grenford and Ambrose in charge. Hetty finally cracks the code - but can the gang get to the Dawn Star in time?
Do you have any idea how much
trouble you'll be in?
Knocking down a wall?
I've got the parchment!
Avarice thinks it's useless.
So, I saved it.
This place is as good as any.
I make the decisions around here!
Have you got that?!
You value loyalty.
The question is, do your friends?
What's that?
Symbols from the parchment!
Try turning the handles in order.
There's nothing more frustrating
than hitting a dead end.
But like the door in the tunnels -
either we can turn around
and give up,
or...we can try everything until
we find a solution.
What are we missing?
Mr Ambrose, just...
putting the lamps out.
Then we'll be set for the night.
HE GROWLS
See to it.
And double-check the windows.
The wind...is picking up.
Yes, Mr Ambrose.
But maybe, sometimes...
..turning around and looking at
both sides of the picture
is what we need to do.
What if there's a different way of
looking at the symbols?
Shh! Keep it down.
I want to try something new.
With the door.
THUNDER CLAPS
Gid?
I'll pass along the message.
THUNDER CLAPS
But try as we might,
there are some obstacles
that we don't even see coming.
And these can be the most
dangerous of them all.
THUNDER CLAPS,
SHE GASPS
So, we know we used the symbols.
And we've tried them in order,
and back to front too.
But that's the order - why would you
put them the wrong way around?
I think there is an order,
but if you look closely,
the symbols are different
on both sides.
It's like they're in pairs, and the
star tells us where to begin.
THUNDER ROLLS
SHE SIGHS
THUNDER CLAPS
Lizzie, you take those ones.
Gid, that one and that one.
Jack, here and here.
So, when I say turn - turn.
Lizzie?
Gid?
Jack.
GEARS UNLOCKING
GEARS SQUEAKING
What do you see, Hetty?
Is it the Dawn Star?
It's another door.
What?
SHE SIGHS
DISTANT RUMBLING
THUNDER CLAPS
Another door?
How much more can
Uncle Monty throw at us?
We tried to pick it, but...
it was no use.
We need to find that key.
And then, we'll open the door
and get the Dawn Star.
What if there are more doors with
more symbols and more locks?
THUNDER CLAPS
Aren't any of you starting
to have doubts?
What if Monty was some crazy old man
playing some stupid game?
I promise you, we're this close.
Tomorrow we'll get the Dawn Star,
give it to Ashok,
and put this behind us.
Let's try to sleep.
THUNDER CLAPS
ASHOK: It's too tight.
Is it too much to ask for a
collar that fits?
Are you all right? You...seem tense.
Tense?
Why would I be tense?
Well, perhaps a little.
There's things on my mind.
It's my birthday.
Your birthday?
Do the Calendars know?
Why should they?
It wouldn't be the same.
It's days like today where
I miss my family.
India...I miss home.
Master Ashok, the jewel
is rightfully yours.
I'm sure you'll have it soon.
Looks like someone's
been keeping little secrets.
I couldn't help overhearing.
Happy birthday, Master Ashok.
Dare I say, I'm feeling
rather sprightly today.
I'd like to test my legs and
get some fresh air,
now the rain has cleared.
Care to join me for a walk?
Where are you going?
Your services will not be needed.
Right - just the baker's delivery,
then we can start lunch.
Thinking what I'm thinking?
Make a pot of tea
and put our feet up a minute?
Agnes...I'm sorry about yesterday.
It's fine.
The menus for the week.
Florence - a word.
I'll get the kettle on.
Door.
What are you doing,
putting your feet up?
Like some gossiping old fish wife?
I've told you,
we're not here to make friends.
You asked me to get close
to the staff.
And now, there is no point!
As soon as we get a chance,
we're taking anything of value,
and we're leaving.
Don't you ever wish...
HE SIGHS
..always moving on...
We have good jobs here,
and the people seem nice.
I knew it.
I knew you were getting too close.
Come to your senses, my girl.
We're leaving...soon as I say.
We can't let your birthday pass
without a celebration.
I know it won't be the same as home,
but I'll try my very best
to cheer you up a little.
It's a shame you haven't
found the Dawn Star.
That would certainly be
a worthy gift for a maharaja.
If only you'd let me help you.
I may be old and frail,
but I have my uses.
And you could trust me over those
servant friends of yours.
Thank you for the offer,
and the walk.
I do feel better.
Perhaps you should ask your servant
friends why they've been scheming
and lurking around in the
dead of night?
My first birthday gift is
a piece of advice.
Servants are no better than
beggars and thieves,
and they WILL double-cross you.
Perhaps you should reconsider
who to trust...
..before it's too late.
In fact, you seem more burdened
than I today?
She's been involved in a protest.
Girls demanding the right to be
taught the sciences.
Possible expulsion?
They're meeting to decide
her fate in a few days.
George is sailing to New York
so he can't help,
and...Emily's panicking.
Leave Calendar Hall and
go help the girl.
Offer comfort and support - perhaps
you might even sway their decision.
And the children?
I could take William,
but Constance has no nursery maid.
Well, Hetty's been serving me,
but she can easily
take on nursery duties.
As I said,
I'm feeling better by the hour.
I think you should consider leaving
straight after Master Ashok's
birthday celebrations.
His birthday?
STAMMERS: I didn't know!
Oh, concentrate on Emily.
I can manage the affairs
of Calendar Hall.
I will speak to Ambrose directly.
Table is set for lunch.
Ambrose, we have some
matters to attend.
Milady?
Not one mention of the key in here.
I fear we're back to the beginning.
Well, what do we do now?
Can't knock down more walls until
we find the key.
ASHOK: What key?
Have you been scheming in the night?
Master Ashok - is there anything
you need after your walk?
You've all been looking for the
Dawn Star without me, haven't you?
Haven't you?! Fine, you're right.
We have been looking,
and we're getting very close.
As soon as we find the Dawn Star,
it's yours. It's risky.
We're not sure what people might do
to get their hands on it.
So, you're protecting me?
Why should I trust you
over anyone else?
Because we're your friends.
The jewel belongs to you.
Once we have the key, we can open
the door in the cellar.
Master Edwin? Master Ashok?
Gideon - Mr Ambrose wants all
staff in the kitchen.
And I'd like some time on my own.
We have to start lunch
again from scratch.
As well as Lady Grenford's request
for poulet de la creme -
chicken with cream, Gideon -
and a cake...
Agnes, you better start polishing,
my girl.
Hetty, Gideon -
dining room, set it, please.
I'll get more vegetables.
Fancy meal and a cake
out of thin air?
I can manage.
Manage together? We always do.
Let me get my work done in peace,
while you see to the silverware.
I keep a few treats
for when I need cheering up.
Don't eat too many.
I'm arranging a special
birthday luncheon.
I hope you like cake.
Thank you.
These are good.
So...strange goings-on in the night.
You were right -
but they said they were helping me.
I don't know what to think any more.
You have to be certain.
Perhaps a test is in order?
If they're looking for
something without you,
simply tell them you have it.
A naughty child will always
try and steal the sweet.
And what if they fail this test?
Hopefully your friends mean well.
If not, we get all the secrets
from our naughty children,
and I'LL help you get the Dawn Star.
But the key has to be somewhere.
Hetty, we have enough to think
about with this lunch. The key!
Would it have symbols on?
That...would make sense, yes.
Excellent! After our talk,
I decided to do my own searching.
I found a loose panel in my room,
and behind it was an old key
with markings. What?
Let's go and try it, and we can get
the Dawn Star for you now.
It can wait.
The key is safe, and I have a
birthday luncheon to attend.
But...we're so close - and now's the
perfect time cos everyone's busy.
And I'm busy, too.
From now on,
we do our searching together.
The key is safe in my room
until we're all ready.
Now allow me to enjoy my birthday.
You're trying to do a lot of things
at once - let me help you.
It's under control, I'm fine.
Have I done something wrong? Yeah.
You're talking -
I told you to let me get on.
We're not gossiping old fish wives.
But we're friends,
if there's a problem... Friends?
You know nothing about me,
and I don't want to know you.
We work together until we don't
work together, that's all.
BELL RINGS
Fine...that's how you want to be.
Let's get this away quickly,
so I can carry on with the cake.
But that chicken hasn't been in the
oven for very long.
It'll be cooked enough -
send it out.
Boring, boring!
Can we hurry up and get to the cake?
Eat your chicken first, Constance.
Happy birthday, Ashok.
And thank you, Lady Grenford,
for arranging this at short notice.
Anything for the maharaja
on his special day.
Ooh, I must say - I seem to find my
appetite has rather returned.
Well, that's an excellent sign.
Yes, perhaps keeping myself busy
and not having the constant service
of Hetty will do me
the world of good.
Dare I say it, if your health
continues for the better,
right away, please.
I shall attend to it presently,
ma'am.
You're going away?
Emily needs my help.
I'll be as quick as I can.
Lady Grenford and Ambrose can
oversee things while I'm away.
Shall we eat?
Ew, these vegetables are crunchy.
And this meat is practically raw.
Nobody eat that chicken.
Raw food being served
to the children - it's dangerous.
Not to worry.
I shall deal with this.
Send for the cook, right away.
You have to go to the dining room.
I have this stupid cake to make.
I don't trust
Lady Grenford in charge.
And what if Ambrose finds out
we're close to the Dawn Star?
We need that key and we'll
have the Dawn Star in no time.
I can slip away and no-one
will notice.
But Ashok told us not to.
And he's already cross with us.
Apologies, I'll take it back
and cook it for longer.
No, no! Let's eat it.
It's not that bad.
And then we can have cake.
It was raw, Constance.
Is there a problem
we should be aware of?
CONSTANCE: I had to start with the
recipes. I was in a rush.
I said sorry.
Did you not try it
before you sent it out?
Just tell me what you want me to do!
The cake'll be burning next.
I beg your pardon?
Where has this tone come from?
We simply want to know
if there is a problem.
Explain, right away.
It was my fault, my lady.
Flo asked me to test the food.
I'm very sorry, my lady, ma'am.
Flo's covering for me.
Excellent.
Now let's have cake.
I've rather lost my appetite.
Get Hetty to help,
wherever she's got to.
Yes, Lady Grenford.
Yes, Lady Grenford.
Where's Hetty?
She's been a while.
I've no idea.
No better then beggars and thieves.
Master Ashok.
I can explain.
We need to take the key and open the
door now. Lady Grenford's going
to be in charge, she could take the
Dawn Star from you.
Lady Grenford's the only one who's
looked out for me today.
And, because of her, I know you're
trying to steal from me.
Luckily, there is no key. What?
Lady Grenford said
I should test you.
And now I know you're trying
to steal the Dawn Star.
And maybe you're just a spoiled brat
who doesn't deserve the Dawn Star.
HE SOBS
I'm sorry, I'm just trying to help.
Why would you do that?
Gets you off the hook.
Anyway, that's what friends do.
But I told you we weren't friends.
That was mean.
I might not know you very well,
but I know when you're lying and I
know you're not yourself today.
I'm here if you want to talk but,
if not, that's fine.
You always have to make
your own choices.
Going to take
this to the compost.
I don't want to go.
What are you doing up here?
Back to the kitchen.
I want to stay.
I've made friends here,
I want to try a normal life.
You don't understand, do you?
We've committed countless crimes.
You are a wanted person.
You will go to jail, Flo,
for what you've done
and you will rot in there.
We have to keep moving on forever.
So, we can never settle?
Mrs Calendar is leaving
and so are we.
Tonight, we rob the place.
Can't we just leave
without taking anything?
We've been caught in the past.
I will tie up every single person
in this house - or worse -
if I have to.
This - this is why
you don't make friends.
Oh, Gid.
What's happening with Ashok?
He just ran outside.
He lied.
There was no key.
I'm sure we haven't looked
behind all of these shelves.
Hetty, you went into his
room, didn't you?
It was a test.
And, even worse, it was
Lady Grenford's idea.
She's on to us.
She knows about the key
and she's turning him
against us.
You were right,
they can't be trusted.
You're the only person
that's helped me today.
Have a little patience.
Soon, I can help however you need.
The Dawn Star's behind a locked
door in the cellar.
I want you to help me find the door
and I want to go home.
I'll make sure you have all that
belongs to you.
Surely, if it was behind a book,
it would have been found by now.
Looks like Mrs Calendar's set to go.
What's happening?
Instead of just standing
there, why don't you help me?
We are helping you see sense.
There's no point in
throwing books around.
He's just laughing at us.
Come on, Monty, what are you hiding?
The star, folly, books, symbols -
almost everything has been
in this painting somehow.
I could draw that with my eyes shut.
There definitely isn't
a key in the painting.
Hetty! What are you doing?!
Hetty!
Agnes!
To the cellar, we've found the key
to the Dawn Star.
I told you it was real.
Come on.
What?
What is it?
They've gone to get the Dawn Star.
Where? Tell me now.
First, you have to promise me
no harm will come to anyone
in this house. I'm not going to
promise you anything.
Tell me where that wretched star is.
Is there a problem?
Um... Mrs Calendar, perhaps
there's something
you should be aware of.
AMBROSE GROANS
Come on, faster!
Ambrose, what is she talking about?
A minor problem that
I've already rectified ma'am.
I promise you.
Well, Florence?
Apologies, ma'am.
I hadn't realised it
had been dealt with already.
Forgive me.
I shall return as soon as I can.
Thank you, driver.
Walk on! Hup, come on!
It's down in the cellar.
We can leave with the Dawn Star
without hurting a soul.
Fine.
Go on.
But, work hard enough
and, eventually, you break through.
The Dawn Star.
Master Ashok,
I believe this is yours.
Now do you believe me?
But, like Monty's doors and symbols,
it's never too long
before something else
gets in your way.
We have a thief in our midst.
Where have you hidden the Dawn Star?
Let me out!
You will answer to the
constables and then the judge.
Hetty, come on. Come on, let's go.
If she didn't take it,
then why did she run?
Hetty!

we're close to the Dawn Star?
We need that key and we'll
have the Dawn Star in no time.
I can slip away and no-one
will notice.
But Ashok told us not to.
And he's already cross with us.
Apologies, I'll take it back
and cook it for longer.
No, no! Let's eat it.
It's not that bad.
And then we can have cake.
It was raw, Constance.
Is there a problem
we should be aware of?
CONSTANCE: I had to start with the
recipes. I was in a rush.
I said sorry.
Did you not try it
before you sent it out?
Just tell me what you want me to do!
The cake'll be burning next.
I beg your pardon?
Where has this tone come from?
We simply want to know
if there is a problem.
Explain, right away.
It was my fault, my lady.
Flo asked me to test the food.
I'm very sorry, my lady, ma'am.
Flo's covering for me.
Excellent.
Now let's have cake.
I've rather lost my appetite.
Get Hetty to help,
wherever she's got to.
Yes, Lady Grenford.
Yes, Lady Grenford.
Where's Hetty?
She's been a while.
I've no idea.
No better then beggars and thieves.
Master Ashok.
I can explain.
We need to take the key and open the
door now. Lady Grenford's going
to be in charge, she could take the
Dawn Star from you.
Lady Grenford's the only one who's
looked out for me today.
And, because of her, I know you're
trying to steal from me.
Luckily, there is no key. What?
Lady Grenford said
I should test you.
And now I know you're trying
to steal the Dawn Star.
And maybe you're just a spoiled brat
who doesn't deserve the Dawn Star.
HE SOBS
I'm sorry, I'm just trying to help.
Why would you do that?
Gets you off the hook.
Anyway, that's what friends do.
But I told you we weren't friends.
That was mean.
I might not know you very well,
but I know when you're lying and I
know you're not yourself today.
I'm here if you want to talk but,
if not, that's fine.
You always have to make
your own choices.
Going to take
this to the compost.
I don't want to go.
What are you doing up here?
Back to the kitchen.
I want to stay.
I've made friends here,
I want to try a normal life.
You don't understand, do you?
We've committed countless crimes.
You are a wanted person.
You will go to jail, Flo,
for what you've done
and you will rot in there.
We have to keep moving on forever.
So, we can never settle?
Mrs Calendar is leaving
and so are we.
Tonight, we rob the place.
Can't we just leave
without taking anything?
We've been caught in the past.
I will tie up every single person
in this house - or worse -
if I have to.
This - this is why
you don't make friends.
Oh, Gid.
What's happening with Ashok?
He just ran outside.
He lied.
There was no key.
I'm sure we haven't looked
behind all of these shelves.
Hetty, you went into his
room, didn't you?
It was a test.
And, even worse, it was
Lady Grenford's idea.
She's on to us.
She knows about the key
and she's turning him
against us.
You were right,
they can't be trusted.
You're the only person
that's helped me today.
Have a little patience.
Soon, I can help however you need.
The Dawn Star's behind a locked
door in the cellar.
I want you to help me find the door
and I want to go home.
I'll make sure you have all that
belongs to you.
Surely, if it was behind a book,
it would have been found by now.
Looks like Mrs Calendar's set to go.
What's happening?
Instead of just standing
there, why don't you help me?
We are helping you see sense.
There's no point in
throwing books around.
He's just laughing at us.
Come on, Monty, what are you hiding?
The star, folly, books, symbols -
almost everything has been
in this painting somehow.
I could draw that with my eyes shut.
There definitely isn't
a key in the painting.
Hetty! What are you doing?!
Hetty!
Agnes!
To the cellar, we've found the key
to the Dawn Star.
I told you it was real.
Come on.
What?
What is it?
They've gone to get the Dawn Star.
Where? Tell me now.
First, you have to promise me
no harm will come to anyone
in this house. I'm not going to
promise you anything.
Tell me where that wretched star is.
Is there a problem?
Um... Mrs Calendar, perhaps
there's something
you should be aware of.
AMBROSE GROANS
Come on, faster!
Ambrose, what is she talking about?
A minor problem that
I've already rectified ma'am.
I promise you.
Well, Florence?
Apologies, ma'am.
I hadn't realised it
had been dealt with already.
Forgive me.
I shall return as soon as I can.
Thank you, driver.
Walk on! Hup, come on!
It's down in the cellar.
We can leave with the Dawn Star
without hurting a soul.
Fine.
Go on.
But, work hard enough
and, eventually, you break through.
The Dawn Star.
Master Ashok,
I believe this is yours.
Now do you believe me?
But, like Monty's doors and symbols,
it's never too long
before something else
gets in your way.
We have a thief in our midst.
Where have you hidden the Dawn Star?
Let me out!
You will answer to the
constables and then the judge.
Hetty, come on. Come on, let's go.
If she didn't take it,
then why did she run?
Hetty!
