Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 9, Episode 1 - Nine Dragons - full transcript

Wo Fat poses as a Chinese scientist as part of a plot to steal a deadly toxin from the University of Hawaii. After the theft McGarrett is hot on his trail to Hong Kong where he finds out that his longtime foe is in league with a triad group known as the Nine Dragons. However, McGarrett is soon captured and after he escapes he soon discovers that the theft was just a small part of a a bigger plot which could lead to nuclear Armageddon for the United States.

You will do it, McGarrett,
one way or another.

Mr. McGarrett's
reconditioning will begin.

[McGARRETT SCREAMING]

[WO LAUGHING]

Toxin, wipe out an entire city.

Somebody stole it from Hawaii.
He had the mark of Nine Dragons.

I call upon world conscience

to condemn my government
for this act of mass murder.

Because of information
just received,

we've decided to abandon
the search for McGarrett.

[SUZIE SPEAKING IN
FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

You like some tea?

You like some tea?

Thank you.

Tastes good.

Where are we?

Aberdeen, the south
coast of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong?

How did I get here?

We found you in the
water, my uncle and I.

What's your name?

Suzie.

What's yours?

Mine?

I don't know. Uh...

Someone did a pretty good job.

Can you take me to
the police right away?

All right.

Let's go, come.

[SUZIE SPEAKS IN
FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

[UNCLE SPEAKS IN
FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

That's you.

Yeah.

You are American?

Yeah, I've got to get to
police headquarters right away.

SUZIE: Come with me.

[TIRES SCREECH]

McGARRETT: Steve McGarrett.

Hawaii Five-0.

How did I get here, and why?

What is it that I've
got to stop by 4:00?

[McGARRETT SIGHS]

Gotta clear my head.

Gotta think. Got to think.

McGARRETT: It all
began two weeks earlier

at Hickam Field in Honolulu.

I was there to meet an emissary
from the Defense Department

who brought with him
two vials of a deadly toxin

from a government stockpile.

The president had ordered
this stockpile destroyed,

but agreed to lend samples
to the University of Hawaii

for use in important
medical research.

Five-0 was made
responsible for security

while these lethal chemical
agents were in the Islands.

555-9694.

Danno.

Thanks.

Williams.

Danno, Steve.

Cousin Naomi has just
arrived. We're heading in.

[OVER PHONE] All
secure at your end?

All secure, Steve.

[SIRENS WAILING]

- Mr. McGarrett, a pleasure to see you.
- Dr. Kiamalu.

May I present my associates.

Dr. Dalton, our
dean of students.

Professor Shimoto, who will be
conducting these experiments.

You've no idea how I've
looked forward to this.

- May I? McGARRETT:
No, in due time, doctor.

First, I'd like to acquaint
you with the security system

set up during the past few days
under Dr. Kiamalu's cooperation.

Arnold, you didn't tell me.

I thought it best to let
Mr. McGarrett explain.

- If you'll show me the way, please?
- Sure.

Now, this safe is where the
toxins will be kept when not in use.

Armed guards will be
on duty 24 hours a day,

serving in shifts of four hours.

Professor Shimoto,

you will be the only one authorized
to remove the toxins from that safe.

Now, you may do that

by presenting this coded ID
card to the officers on duty.

They will check the
card on this special circuit

to the H.P.D. computer room.

No forgeries are possible

if these procedures
are followed to the letter.

After the
identification is made,

the officers will accompany
you across to Laboratory 2.

Key, please.

Doctor.

Very well.

Now, this is where the
experiments will be conducted.

The guards will remain
with Professor Shimoto

until the experiments
come to an end.

Professional colleagues
assisting in the experiments

will be admitted only after
showing proper credentials

and after personal
identification by the professor.

Now, this lab will be
used for nothing else

during the term of
these experiments.

When not in use, the
door will be kept locked.

There will be no admittance
to anyone without exception.

Any questions?

All very efficient,
Mr. McGarrett.

General Patton would
have been proud of you.

I've always read that
General Patton's main tactic

was one of sudden
lightning attack.

Now, my position here
is one of defense, doctor.

Against Attila the
Hun, Mata Hari,

and the German 5th Panzer
Division all rolled into one?

I don't know what's
bothering you,

but I can assure you
that I don't like uniforms

or guns on the campus
any more than you do.

You have a very strange way
of showing it, Mr. McGarrett.

You're very pretty, doctor,

and I'm sure you know
a lot about chemistry,

but let me lay out
procedures for this operation,

if you don't mind.

My responsibility is to
protect the people of this state.

From the imaginary
enemy that surrounds us all?

Well, for all of our sakes,

let us hope that it remains
imaginary, shall we?

WOMAN 1 [OVER PA]: Air
Siam passengers for Flight 142

may now claim their baggage
at the baggage claim area.

"Professor T.L. Shang.

24 Victoria Street."

- Hong Kong?
SHANG: That is correct.

Are you here for
business or pleasure, sir?

SHANG: Bound to be both.

Your university was kind
enough to invite me here

to give a series of lectures.

WOMAN 2: Flight 627 now arriving.
WOMAN 1: Air Siam passengers...

Have a pleasant
stay in Hawaii, sir.

SHANG: I am
certain that I shall.

- How was your trip, professor?
- Ha, ha.

Rather ironical.

I was sitting next to a
retired police captain

who regaled me with stories
of the Chicago underworld.

Oh, I showed appropriate shock.

[BOTH LAUGH]

Have all the
arrangements been made?

All made.

The gas company truck, the
battery pack, the Freon cylinder.

And the fourth man?

Standing by your hotel.

Unknown to the
Hawaiian police, I assume?

San Francisco man.

Excellent. And what have
you heard from the university?

McGarrett has those toxins
tied up tighter than a drum.

Hmm. Drums can be pierced,
and so can our friend McGarrett.

Where will the actual
experiments take place?

A laboratory with
standard equipment,

- except for one thing.
- What's that?

The environmental vacuum chamber,
has something to do with biochemistry.

Do we know who
has access to the lab?

Only three.

Hmm.

Huh.

"Dr. Arnold Kiamalu,
close friend of the governor,

who met McGarrett
on social occasions."

Oh, he will never do. Ha, ha.

"Professor Shimoto.

Once worked on
secret research project

for the United States
Defense Department."

He would be too
security-conscious.

"Dr. Barbara Dalton.

Fighter for the underdog,
champion of minority rights,

member, Committee
for Academic Freedom."

[CHUCKLES]

This lady is of interest to me.

This is your big day, Takeo.

- Good luck.
- Thanks, Barbara. I'll need it.

WOMAN 1: Excuse
me. MAN: Right here, sir.

WOMAN 1: Can I have
your autograph, please?

[MURMURING INDISTINCTLY]

MAN: Just one word.
WO: Later, later, later.

WOMAN 2: How are
you doing in Hawaii, sir?

Professor Shang, welcome
to the University of Hawaii.

Thank you very much.

Professor Shang, would you say a
few words for our TV College Roundup?

Regretfully, no.

- It will only take a moment...
WO: Please, let me explain.

I escaped from Communist
China many years ago,

but I have relatives
who are still there.

And should my visit to
your country become known

it could make it
difficult for them.

I'm sure we all
understand that, don't we?

But I would like
to say a few words

to those of you who have been
so kind as to come and greet me.

WOMAN 1: All right.

WOMAN 2: Excuse me, professor.

WO: I've come a long way,

I've seen many
places, many people.

I can tell you that
nowhere in the world

does human intellect
flourish with greater freedom

than it does here in
your own beloved country.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

WOMAN 1: Thank you, professor.
WOMAN 2: Have a nice day.

WOMAN 3: Enjoy your stay.
WO: Thank you very much.

How about a cook's
tour for starters?

I'm sure you have
something better to do.

But nothing I'd rather do.

Well, in that case,
I'd be delighted.

Oh, faculty tea at 5, professor.

DALTON: Our oceanography center.

They say that the Pacific's
shrinking at about an inch a year.

Pretty soon we'll be neighbors.

WO: Ha, a most happy prospect.

But I am more
interested in biochemistry.

We hear that your people
are making fantastic strides.

DALTON: So you've
heard of Enviro-V.

WO: Yes, the environmental
vacuum chamber.

I had hoped to
see it in operation.

Perhaps someday. Ha, ha.

Why wait till the Pacific
shrinks? Come on.

I'm sorry, you can't come
in here now. Strict orders.

DALTON: It's all right. I'm
Dr. Dalton, dean of students.

- And this is Professor T.L. Shang...
OFFICER: Doctor, I have my orders.

I am very embarrassed.

Don't be. I
understand completely.

I have seen bureaucratic
repression before.

I think I'll go back to the
hotel and get some rest.

I've heard that your faculty
teas aren't always limited to tea.

[DALTON LAUGHS]

Phase 1, our truck will park here,
alongside the Chemistry Building.

Phase 2, we will
then move over...

[PHONE RINGING]

Yes?

A Professor Po Ling is here.

I'll tell him you're not here.

WO: Uh, no, wait.

He may have been
sent by the college.

They're up to their ears
with official greeters.

Better have him come up.

WO: Yes?

- Professor Shang?
WO: That is correct.

I am Po Ling,
University of Hawaii.

WO: Yes.

- May I come in?
- Oh, please.

Of course, of course.

Is there something
troubling you, professor?

You don't know me?

Should I?

I suppose we both have
changed a lot in 26 years.

But still, I thought the name.

Po Ling? Po...
Po Ling, of course.

It's been a long time
ago, the memory fades.

How have you been?

Quite happy here.

But of course you knew
all that from my letters.

I treasure them dearly.

Please, may I offer
you some refreshment?

No.

Nothing, thank you.

But I would be interested to know
about our mutual friend in Hong Kong.

Which friend would that be?

Who else but the lovely Nan Li
Chu, who once I had planned to marry.

[LAUGHS]

You'll be very happy to know
that she is doing very well.

Very well indeed.
I see her often.

That is quite remarkable.

Oh? How so?

PO LING: Because
the lovely Nan Li Chu

was shot by border guards

when she and I and Dr. Shang
escaped from Communist China

more than 25 years ago.

You are an imposter, sir.

Professor, obviously there
has been some mistake.

Perhaps it was a
different Shang you knew.

After all, it is not so
uncommon a name.

Just to show that there
are no hard feelings,

I'll have you driven
back to the university.

I don't need your help.

Professor, you don't
seem to understand.

I'm not offering you a choice.

DANNY: Steve.
McGARRETT: Yeah, Danno?

Post 1 at the
university just called.

Some people tried gaining
admittance into Laboratory 2

during one of the
toxin experiments.

- What people?
- Uh...

"Dean Barbara Dalton
and Professor T.L. Shang

of the University of Hong Kong."

They were told the lab was
off-limits and turned away.

The good dean didn't like it.

Yeah, I can imagine.

I sent a cable to Hong Kong CID

requesting a check
on Professor Shang.

Good. Good, Danno.

In the interim, uh,

take Duke and pay a visit
on Professor Shang, huh?

[DOORBELL BUZZES]

Uh, Williams, Lukela.
Five-0, state police.

Professor T.L. Shang?

MAN: Yes. Is something wrong?

DANNY: Uh, no, I just bring greetings
from our chief, Steve McGarrett.

He wants you to
feel free at any time

to call on us for any
services we can provide.

That is most generous.

Please convey my thanks
to your chief, Mr. McGarrett.

Thank you.

[PHONE RINGING]

McGarrett.

OPERATOR: Ready on
your call to Hong Kong, sir.

Yeah, go ahead. Put him on.

Blake here.

[OVER PHONE] Sorry I
didn't get back to you sooner,

but I had a rather
nasty morning.

Everything's sorted out now.

What can I do
for you, my friend?

We have a visitor
here named Shang.

T.L. Shang.

He's supposed to be a professor
from the University of Hong Kong.

I'd like a description and a
verification of his whereabouts.

Well, that's simple enough.

I'll have it on the telex
in a matter of minutes.

[OVER PHONE] Goodbye, McGarrett.

Come and see me sometime.

Professor Shang, the
reception's been called off.

There's been a terrible tragedy.

Professor Kiamalu
sent his apologies.

Oh, what happened?

One of our faculty members was
killed a few hours ago in a car accident.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Perhaps you knew him.

He came from Hong
Kong too many years ago.

Professor Po Ling.

Po Ling?

Why, of course, we
were very close friends.

We escaped across the Chinese
Red border together in 1949.

Then it's your loss too.

Very much indeed.

DALTON: They say
there's form in the universe.

But a thing like this,

a brilliant life snuffed out
by chance, you wonder.

WO: Are we sure it was chance?

What do you mean?

Po Ling was an outspoken
critic of the communist regime,

a constant thorn in their sides.

One has to wonder.

I'd hate to believe that
what you're saying is true.

[CHUCKLES]

Dr. Dalton, I've
lived on both sides.

I assure you that police
states will stop at nothing

to achieve their ends.

That is why I become so
alarmed when I see, uh...

Well, it's not for me to criticize.
After all, I'm just a visitor.

Professor, you don't
even have to say it.

It's so obvious.

They resist our movements,
tell us where we can and can't go.

I suppose it's our
own fault in the end,

for not being more
critical, more resistant.

You wanted to see the
environmental vacuum chamber...

Oh, please. Please, I
do not wish to impose.

Professor, you are going
to see it. Come with me.

WO: Allow me.

Introducing Enviro-V.

Developed by Dr. Paul Mehalani
of our Department of Biochemistry.

There are only five
of these in the world.

It's enabled us to study physical
matter in a new and undistorted way

under residual pressure of
one-400-millionth of an atmosphere.

We can study matter
from outer space

or we can probe the
very substance of life itself,

the DNA of the living cell.

Using this chamber,

we've now verified that DNA

is the carrier of genetic
information for all living systems

and that the amino acid
sequence of any polypeptide chain

is related to the linear sequence of
nucleotides within the DNA molecule.

- Can you imagine that?
- Incredible.

Oh, but I've allowed
myself to go on.

Please do not apologize, doctor.

I assure you,

I could not have spent a
more profitable afternoon.

- Once a teacher...
- Ha, ha.

Your key.

- Steve? McGARRETT:
Yeah, I'm over here.

What a mess this place is.

Everything's fine
with Professor Shang.

- You checked him
out? DUKE: Face-to-face.

DANNY: He seems legit.

This, uh, telex just came in
from CID, Hong Kong, Blake.

"Shang, T.L., professor.

Confirmed departure for
Honolulu 24 hours ago.

Description: Chinese male,
height 5-feet-9, stocky build,

age 50, bald, mustache,
small pointed beard."

That's him, Steve.

Ladies and gentlemen,

our guest today
needs little introduction.

From Hong Kong, the
distinguished teacher,

author, philosopher,
Professor T.L. Shang.

Thank you.

Thank you very much.

My friends,

it is unfortunate that
this wonderful moment

should be overshadowed
by such a tragic event.

Professor Po Ling was
more than a colleague,

more than a great
scientific mind.

He was that rarest of things:

a friend.

So I dedicate
this lecture to him.

A lecture on the phenomenon
of the exceptional man.

[CLICKING]

This is it.

Nor can we forget the great
German philosopher Nietzsche

who held that
the will to power...

the sun, the stars,
the universe itself.

I thank you.

Now Professor Shang
will answer any questions.

That young lady.

This quality of greatness
you spoke about,

is it something that all
can attain, and if so, how?

Allow me to answer that question

by quoting your own great poet
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The heights by great
men Reached and kept

Were not attained
by sudden flight

For they While their
companions slept

Were toiling upward in the night

WO: Easy now.

Careful with that equipment.
We've done well so far.

Remember, we move
tomorrow morning, 0830 hours.

Will the party speak to someone
else or do you want to...?

Just a minute. He's coming now.

One moment, please.

- CID, Hong Kong. Priority call.
- Right.

Yeah, go ahead.
This is McGarrett.

Blake here.

It's 3:00 in the bloody morning

and I'm gonna drop a
bomb in your lap, McGarrett.

[OVER PHONE] We've picked
up a floater in Victoria Harbor.

We just got a positive ID.

It's T.L. Shang.

The real Professor T.L. Shang,
and he's dead, McGarrett.

He's awfully dead.

These are two of my students.

They're assisting in
the experiment today.

Your ID, please?

Thank you. This way.

SHIMOTO: Cobra venom and
saxitoxin in quantities seldom produced.

Here is the potential for massive
death or millions of broken lives repaired.

We hold an enormous trust...

[PHONE RINGING]

Duke, this is Steve.

I'm on Nimitz Highway
heading up to the university.

Any luck with our H.P.D.
post at the college?

Negative, Steve.

We've been ringing there
for ten minutes. No answer.

McGARRETT: Try the
Campus Security Police.

If you get through, tell them
to proceed to Laboratory 2

and to alert our people that a
Professor T.L. Shang is a phony.

[OVER PHONE] If seen,
he's to be held for questioning.

Got it.

Jenkins, light the burner.

Yes, professor.

[GAS HISSING]

Gas pressure dropping.

[OVER RADIO]
Freon feeding into lab.

[COUGHING]

GUARD: Hey, you
just freeze right there.

[CHUCKLES]

McGARRETT: What's
going on? What's going on?

What's happening?
What's happening?

The third floor, it's terrible.

Oh, my God.

[COUGHING]

Oh.

[COUGHING]

[SIRENS WAILING]

McGARRETT: Give me a hand here.

There are two gunshot
victims in the hallway.

They were alive
when I left them.

These people were
gassed. Get them some help.

CHIN HO: Steve, Steve.
- Yeah?

This was attached to
the wall in the utility room.

"Freon gas, 12."

Gas?

I passed a gas truck
driving onto the campus.

Island Gas Company.

Get on the horn to Central,

I want every man, every police
car, to be on the alert for that truck.

And double security on all
reservoirs and water supply systems,

any place those
toxins might be used.

Notify Army, Navy and
Public Health Service,

full red alert, on the double.

The toxins have been stolen.

McGARRETT:
Someone got into the lab

before the
experiments took place.

Is something wrong, doctor?

Well, I did let someone
in the lab, but...

McGARRETT: You what?

Oh, he couldn't possibly
have been responsible,

not Professor Shang.

You're right, doctor.

Professor Shang couldn't
have been responsible,

because Professor Shang
has never been in Hawaii.

He was murdered in
Hong Kong a few days ago.

DANNY: Steve.
- Yeah, Danno?

Naturally, no Professor
Shang at the Hayakowani Hotel.

His suite was
empty, except for this.

McGARRETT: It says,
"You were too late, McGarrett.

I have obtained what I came for.

When and where I use it,
you will learn in due time."

No signature, none needed.

Only one man could
have pulled this heist.

- Wo Fat?
- Yeah.

I know his style and
I know his methods.

And for the first time, I think
I know where to find him.

Where's that?

McGARRETT: Danno.

This paper looked unusual, sir,
so we took it to the lab for analysis.

It turned out to be
handmade rice paper,

uh, which is manufactured
only in the Orient.

Under ultraviolet light,
this mark became visible.

Chin, what's it say?

[CHIN HO SPEAKS IN
FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

Translation: "Nine Dragons."

Nine Dragons has two meanings.

It's a peninsula,

part of the British Crown
Colony of Hong Kong,

and it's an organization.
They call them triads.

I've heard the term.

They are the crime
families in the East.

Nine Dragons is the
biggest and most feared triad.

And our major lead to Wo Fat.

Governor,

I request your
permission to go after him.

Of course, I'll be working
with the full cooperation

of the Hong Kong Police.

How long would you be gone?

Until I find Wo Fat,
until I recover the toxins,

however long that takes.

WOMAN [OVER PA]:
Your attention, please.

Flight 209 now
arriving at Gate 4.

Air Siam Flight 209
now arriving at Gate 4.

- Mr. McGarrett. McGARRETT: Ah.

Carter, CID.

Welcome to Hong
Kong, Mr. McGarrett.

- Thank you. Thank you, Mr. Carter.
- Mr. Blake sends his apologies.

He was planning
to be here himself,

but unfortunately a double murder
on Tsing Yi Island said otherwise.

Oh, I see.

First visit?

Once before. I was here
during the Korean War.

I had some R and R
coming, so I took it here.

You'll find Hong Kong
has changed a lot.

What hasn't?

Not everything, but we do
have hopes, Mr. McGarrett.

[McGARRETT GRUNTS]

WO: A most magnificent
view, McGarrett,

so enhanced by such
excellent company.

Seems that I have won.

Deadly toxins, so carefully
guarded by the Hawaii Five-0,

are now in my hands
as is its protector.

Oh, it was most obliging of you
to follow the Nine Dragons clue

which I left in Hawaii
quite hopefully.

Your agents, picking
me up at the airport,

had to be sure that the real Hong
Kong Police wouldn't be there.

Correct.

Which means they had
to be decoyed. How?

Oh, come now, we
are both professionals.

Surely you know that what you
say now can make little difference.

It would have been so much simpler
to finish the job while I was drugged.

So there had to
be another reason.

Again you do not disappoint me.

Indeed, you were
brought here for a purpose.

A single, simple purpose.

[CHUCKLES]

Your answer?

I think you've guessed it.

You realize that it's wholly within
my power to make you comply.

Sure. Sure, a little
Chinese torture, perhaps?

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

A crude word, McGarrett.

It's now a science,
nothing more.

Behavior modification
through stress.

Of course, we have refined
the methods considerably

- since the Korean War.
- Yeah.

But then the world,
even in those days,

looked at your brave GIs
standing before cameras,

confessing their crimes against
the People's Republic of China.

And you will do
it too, McGarrett.

One way or another.

Why not spare yourself a
most unpleasant experience?

And if I do, then what?

Your release and freedom.

I give you my word
as a professional.

And you have my
word, as a professional.

That does not make
me happy. Take him.

Mr. McGarrett's
reconditioning will begin.

He did say 209.

Check the flight supervisor. I
want a detailed passenger list.

Right.

[PHONE RINGS]

Williams.

OPERATOR: Long
distance from Hong Kong.

One moment,
please. Go ahead, sir.

Williams? Blake here.

What's happened to McGarrett?

He hasn't arrived?

BLAKE [OVER PHONE]:
Not on Flight 209, he hasn't.

No, you've got the wrong flight.

He was on Air Siam Flight 17,
arriving Hong Kong 10 a.m. your time.

[OVER PHONE]
We sent you a cable.

No, no, that was the first plan.

Then it was changed to Flight
209, arriving 12 noon, our time.

[OVER PHONE] Uh, it
was in the second cable.

We never sent
you a second cable.

Oh. Well, I'll investigate
and keep you informed.

Goodbye.

Chin, get ready for a trip.

No.

No.

[SCREAMING]

[WO LAUGHING]

No.

No.

[WO LAUGHING]

[YELLING]

WOMAN [OVER
PA]: Flight 94 from...

Williams, we've met
before, haven't we?

International Police Convention.

Sydney, Australia, of
course. Good to see you.

- This is, uh, Chin Ho Kelly, Five-0.
- How do you do?

- Anthony Waring, CID, Triad Bureau.
- How do you do?

Anything on McGarrett?

Not any more, except that we
know that he was on the earlier flight

and never reached his hotel.

I'm afraid we've just
got to assume the worst.

We already have.

McGarrett.

McGarrett.

Everything is all right.

The ordeal is over.

I've got to sleep.

You'll get plenty
of sleep and food.

You've been a very good boy.

[McGARRETT MUMBLES INDISTINCTLY]

[GROANS]

[GRUNTS]

WO: My part of the
bargain, delivered.

The rest is up to you, general.

I must confess, certain
problems have arisen.

What sort of problems?

The people I have engaged, are
concerned about the aftermath.

What could be more clear?

When the deed is done, I will go
to Peking to assume command,

and issue the orders that will bring
the American imperialists to their knees.

And you, general, will once
again have a high army command.

Honolulu, Los Angeles, Detroit,
Chicago, New York, Washington.

These are our primary targets.

The rest is a mere
mopping-up action.

That much we understand.

It is the rest of the world
we are concerned about.

How do we know they will not turn
against us after our preemptive strike?

Because our act will
be fully justified with this.

McGarrett has
actually done this?

To perfection.

[MAN SPEAKING IN
FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

[MAN GRUNTS]

[PHONE RINGS]

Yes?

Escaped? How?

Execute them at once

and inform all Nine Dragon
members that by tonight,

I want to see the corpse
of Steve McGarrett.

[SUZIE SPEAKING IN
FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

That's you.

Yeah.

You are American?

Yeah. I've got to get to
police headquarters right away.

- In Central?
- Yes. Which way?

Quickly, quickly.

That way. Come with me.

[TIRE SCREECHES]

OFFICER: Get ready
for advance. About turn.

[OFFICER YELLING INDISTINCTLY]

Um, incidentally, there's
the second cable that arrived.

It's our one clue
for the time being.

We're running it down right now
through the cable offices in Hawaii.

With luck we might
make an ID on the sender.

BLAKE: If only we knew
why McGarrett came here,

it might help
develop some leads.

Toxin, two vials,
wipe out an entire city.

Someone stole them from
Hawaii posing as Professor Shang.

McGarrett was after them.

Why here?

There was only one clue left. It
had the mark of Nine Dragons.

Ah, they're ours. One of our
most notorious crime organizations.

Well, that we know.

What about a full
mobilization sweep?

It may work for Honolulu,
but not in Hong Kong.

If as much as one
policeman is seen here,

everything and everybody
vanishes into the woodwork.

And I do mean everybody.

As a matter of fact,

we have got somebody in
Nine Dragons at the moment,

loaned to us from
Special Branch.

Code Number 42.

Waring, check on him
right away, will you?

Yes, sir.

MASTER [IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]:

INITIATE [IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]:

MASTER:

INITIATE:

ALL [IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]:

[IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

[MEN SHOUTING]

Excuse me, sir, but I've
made contact with 42.

BLAKE: Good.
- Nine Dragons was holding McGarrett.

They've got every member
out searching for him

with orders to kill on sight.

Well, then he's escaped.

Yes, apparently from a
boat in East Lamma Channel.

East Lamma Channel.

There's the channel,
nearest town.

Chief Superintendent Blake here.

Get me the officer in
charge of CID at Aberdeen.

[MAN SPEAKS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

- What did he say?
- That's the Police Headquarters.

- We get off...
- No, no.

No, no. I get off here.

You to go back to
your boat, Suzie.

But you're not in good
shape. You need help.

You've helped me enough.

I've put you in danger.

I want you to go
back to your boat.

I'm very grateful to
you, Suzie. Thank you.

I can make it across
the street alone.

- You're sure you're all right?
- I'm all right.

Take care of yourself, okay?

Okay.

[YELLS]

[GRUNTING]

All I can find is exhaustion,
physical and mental.

Some rest and some
food, you'll be good as new.

Thank you, doctor.

There's a cot down the hall if
you want to sack out for a while.

No, Danno, there's no time.

Something is going
to happen at 4:00.

Something we've got to stop.

- What's happening?
McGARRETT: I don't know.

I don't know.

BLAKE: Perhaps if you can
tell us what you do remember,

it might come back to you.

I remember landing in Kowloon.

I remember being met by three men
who said they were from your office.

We got into a car.

And we began driving
and there was a...

The man on the right
pulled an automatic.

The man in the left front seat
shot me in the neck with something.

Felt like a dart.

Then, when I came to, I
was in a strange compound.

And Wo Fat was there. Yes.

Yes.

He wanted me to say
something or to do something.

Then, when I refused...

that's when the
treatment started.

Of brainwashing?

Yeah, I guess you
could call it that, Danno.

Latest techniques, things
that we never heard of.

Then it was over.

Wo Fat was
standing in front of me

saying that I was a good boy.

For doing what?

I don't know. I
don't know, Danno.

It's all that's coming
through. I don't know.

Take it easy, Steve.

[DOOR OPENS]

Steve, I just spoke
to Duke in Honolulu.

They checked the Cable Office.

No record of a second
cablegram to Honolulu.

Who delivered that cable to you?

It was on my desk when
I got here in the morning.

- Put there by your secretary?
- No, no.

It was 8:00. She wasn't in then.

- Then by whom?
- Could be anybody in the building.

Someone who knew
we sent an earlier cable.

Are you suggesting it
was somebody on my staff?

Happens in the best of
intelligence units, old boy.

Deep-planted mole, double agent.

I'd hate to think that
you're right, McGarrett,

but I can bloody soon find out.

BLAKE: Right.
I'll keep this brief.

Because of information
just received,

we've decided to abandon
the search for McGarrett.

All of those involved in the operation
can be assigned to other duties.

Any questions?

Does that mean that McGarrett
is safe or he's dead, sir?

I don't want this to go any
further for the time being,

but I'm afraid that
the news is bad.

And now to another matter.

We've been informed

there's to be a meeting of
the Red Lodge Triad Society

in the Golden Orchid
District on Monday the 11th.

We are gonna
raid that meeting...

Oh.

Excuse me, sir. I'm sorry.

What you have just seen is
to go no further than this room.

Is that understood?

It is part of our strategy to have
them believe that McGarrett is dead.

We'll meet tomorrow
morning, 0900 hours,

at the Red Lodge
raid. That will be all.

Well done.

And now we watch and we listen.

And if there is a mole
in the organization,

I think that ought
to smoke him out.

WOMAN [OVER PA]: Flight 94
for Hangzhou, mainland China,

now boarding from Gate 7.

Excuse me, sir. But there's
been a killing in Wan Chai.

I'm on my way to investigate.

Why not leave it to Homicide?

Frank Chambers is ill.

Besides, it's a triad
thing, my department.

All right. But I shall
need a full report.

Yes, of course.

Chief Superintendent Blake here.

Top-secret
priority instructions.

Listen carefully.

I want strict surveillance

on a gentleman leaving the
building at this very moment.

- Yes?
- Seventh Dragon.

McGarrett is alive.
He's in Blake's office.

You're certain of this?

Quite certain. I saw him
myself just a few moments ago.

Oh, and you left right
away to phone me.

You know where my loyalty is.

Yes, and so does Blake.

I'm afraid you have
fallen into a trap.

You're right, old Blake's
improving with age.

[OVER PHONE] Don't
worry, I won't lead them to you.

Yes, but neither can
you return to your office.

[OVER PHONE] We must assume
that your cover has been blown.

What shall I do?

We'll help you get
out of Hong Kong.

New name, new
life somewhere else.

The past will be forgotten.

[OVER PHONE] Can
you leave right away?

Of course, I'm tied to nothing.

Go to the 14 Quay Steps.
We'll have a boat waiting.

Sail southeast to
Tat Hong Channel.

[OVER PHONE] There you'll
be met by a larger vessel.

All right.

[DIALS]

Arrange a boat for
Mr. Waring quickly.

Twenty-four to Blake.

Subject taking
evasive action. Over.

All units. All units.

We'll join in pursuit. Keep
us informed of exact position.

Shall we go?

[POLICE SIREN WAILING]

Waring.

Waring, can you hear me?

Waring, where is Nine
Dragons Command?

You know who did
this to you, don't you?

Your friends in
the Nine Dragons.

Your blood brothers that
you're trying to protect.

No.

And Wo Fat sits at
the top of the heap,

happy to cancel you
out for his own protection.

Waring, is that how
you wanna leave it?

Huh?

Tell me, where is he?

[WHISPERS] Victorian Peak.

[POLICE SIRENS WAILING]

OFFICER: Hurry up. Go, go.

WO: A most magnificent
view, McGarrett.

[FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]

[WO LAUGHING]

Well, I think we can safely
say our birds have flown.

Something wrong?

No, nothing's wrong.

Your accommodations?

Yeah, sometime.

Lovely, isn't it?

Yeah...

Movies.

They took movies of
me saying something.

BLAKE: Saying what?

I don't know.

I don't know.

I don't remember.

There she is.

MAN: Can I help you?

Yes, we're interested in
a roll of motion picture film

that may have been developed
here within the last 48 hours.

Look, we do strictly legitimate
work here. No porno stuff...

DANNY: We're not here to
bust you. We just want this film.

BLAKE: Do hurry,
man. Time is vital to us.

If we did the work, it would
be in the log over here.

- You know the name of the company?
- I don't know.

Could I see the log, please?

Now, these firms,
do you know them?

Have you done
work for them before?

Yeah, most of them.

What about this
one? "Wall City Films."

No, they're, uh, a new one.

"Two hundred feet. Uh,
35 mm, with soundtrack."

Now, where's that?

We got that out last night.
Delivered it by hand to the client.

Did you keep a print?

Ha. If we kept a print of
everything we produced here,

we'd need a storeroom
bigger than China.

Did anyone here see
this film? Screen it?

If anyone did, it
would be the timer.

He sometimes runs a
quality check, but not always.

Chief Superintendent Blake, CID.

[SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

McGARRETT: What's he saying?

Something about you, Steve.

That you're a traitor,
betrayed your country.

All right, all right,
simmer down.

This is Mr. McGarrett
of Hawaii Five-0.

Well, he saw a film with you.

He has a print.

He made a print?

Get it.

McGARRETT [ON FILM]:
My name is Steven McGarrett,

I am head of Hawaii Five-0,
an American police unit.

I am making this
statement of my own free will

for satellite broadcast
throughout the world.

It has come to my knowledge
that at exactly 4:00 today

agents of the United
States of America

poisoned the water
supply of Hangzhou

where government leaders

of the People's Republic
of China were meeting.

Two kinds of poison were used:

cobra venom and saxitoxin.

The latter derived from the
red tide bacteria of shellfish.

Both poisons were
prepared and developed

by United States
intelligence agencies.

I know because I was
in charge of security

while this crime
was being planned

under the guise of
a research project.

I call upon world conscience
to condemn my government

for this act of mass murder.

As a personal protest,

I intend to give up my
American citizenship.

My God.

How could I say those things?

Even brainwashed, how
could I say those things?

Steve, you had no control.

We saw it in Korea
so many times.

Whole companies of men denouncing
their countries with absolute lies.

Is it a total lie?

Or is it the truth with the
names of the guilty changed?

Wo Fat steals the
toxins from Honolulu.

Wo Fat poisons the
water supply of Hangzhou,

wiping out the main body
of Chinese leadership.

He beams this
film over satellite,

announcing to the world
that the United States did it.

Yeah, exactly. Exactly.

Meanwhile, Wo Fat sets
himself up as the leader of China.

Steps into the power vacuum.

- And then what?
- Then...

How about a retaliatory nuclear
strike against the United States?

It's possible.

H-hour is exactly 4:00.

That gives us only 36 minutes
to find Wo Fat's headquarters.

You said that the film
was delivered by hand?

Who delivered it?

- I did.
- Can you show us the way?

- Yeah, sure.
McGARRETT: Danno, Chin?

Get over to, uh,
China Travel Service.

We'll hit Wall City
Films. Let's go.

All units, all units.
Converge on Wall City Films.

Prepare for full
mobilized assault.

DANNY: We're
American police officers.

We have an urgent
message for your government.

- Then you must contact Peking.
- No time.

We want you to do it for us.

But we are merely travel agents.

Yes, we know you're
just travel agents.

But this is a matter of life and death
for your own government leaders.

CHIN HO: Maybe the whole world.

Please, get on that
phone to Peking.

Surely, you've got the wrong
people. We are merely...

May I remind you of
an old Chinese saying:

[SPEAKS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

"He who does not stop
murder is himself a murderer."

[SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

[SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

[SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

MAN [OVER MONITOR]: McGarrett
film ready to roll at your signal.

All units stand by.

You've done very well.

I am proud to share with
you this moment in history.

And I promise you
that as soon as...

[ALARM BUZZING]

Security camera, Monitor 3.

Quick. Quick.

McGarrett.

Come here.

Where is Wo Fat?

Where is Wo Fat?

Get him out of here.

[SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE]

[FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]

Looks like Peking
got the message, huh?

So it seems.

You can look for all the secret
passages you want, Blake.

I'll tell you one
thing you won't find.

What?

Top Dragon.

Come back soon.

But, please, not on business.

I'd like that, Blake. Thank you.

Thank you, for all
your cooperation.

McGarrett, it's been
a great pleasure.

Mr. McGarrett.

Here's a going-home
gift from our office.

I owe a debt of thanks
to your government.

Please, I do not
represent my government.

We are merely travel agents.

Yes, I know. Ha, ha.

Travel agents.

Steve, just came over
the radio. It's from Blake.

"Triad leader shot
by police in Wall City.

Face disfigured, but ID in pockets
reveal corpse to be Wo Fat."

Maybe this time it's true.

Yeah, maybe.

And maybe not.
