Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 5, Episode 4 - Pig in a Blanket - full transcript

During a traffic stop in the boonies, the driver slips out a concealed handgun and shoots the HPD officer down in his tracks. Before dying, the cop gets off a couple of rounds at the fleeing car, causing it to crash. McGarrett and Danno visit the killer in the hospital, where he still couldn't care less about murdering a man ("I chopped a cop ... put a pig in a blanket"). The incident preys heavily on both men's minds, particularly Danno's. Later that same night, Danno witnesses a liquor-store robbery where the masked thief takes a shot at him. Danno follows the thief to a house, but loses him on the grounds. When a person steps out appearing to be carrying a pistol, Danno fires -- and finds to his horror that the young man was an innocent kid living at the house -- carrying a soldering iron. As the wounded boy lingers comatose and in critical condition, McGarrett must try to save Danno's reputation by proving that the robbery did occur and that the robber tricked the shooting victim into walking into the line of fire.

( upbeat surf theme playing)

(man giggles, whoops)

We won, Daniel. Hee-hee-hee.

By two pins.

They thought they had us
and then we socked it to them.

That split you cleaned up was...

Oh, was that not
purely beautiful?

A little lucky. Lucky?

Yeah, you nicked one pin,

and the breeze gave
the other one pneumonia.

(giggles)

Hey, did I not bet a
medium-rare steak

with onion rings on that throw?

DANNO: That you did.

And I will begrudgingly
buy you that steak right now

if you'll slow down.

Fact is, I gotta pass tonight.

(panting)

I've missed so
many meals at home,

my kids are calling
me Uncle Daddy.

(giggling)

Next week?

With onion rings.

Okay.

(man giggling)

( upbeat theme playing)

(engine starts)

Central, this is Chinough
Olena, off duty. Any messages?

MAN (on radio):
Negative, Chinough.

(tires squealing)

(tires squeal)

(siren wailing)

(siren stops)

Good afternoon.

Good afternoon, officer.

Yeah, may I see
your driver's license

and registration, please?

Oh, sure thing.

Would you please
remove your license...?

( dramatic theme playing)

(engine revs, tires squeal)

(gunshot)

( dramatic theme swells)

(beeping)

He was on his way home.

Stopped a guy in a
routine moving violation.

A doper with a load.

Where's the doper?

Down the hall in another ward.

He'll recover.

NURSE: Excuse me, gentlemen.

Chinough's wife here?

In the waiting
room with his father.

I, uh... I owe him a steak. Heh.

As I remembered, you
owe him a lot more than that.

( somber theme playing)

(sighs)

That's for sure.

A lot more.

( tense theme playing)

(device beeping)

(buzzing)

Red blanket.

Red blanket. ICU.

Red blanket, Intensive Care.

Red blanket, Intensive Care.

Out of the way, please.

(device buzzing)

(device buzzing)

What happened?

Had a few ectopic
beats, then standstill.

DOCTOR: And the fibrillations?

Right after the
first chest blow.

DOCTOR: Two amps bicarb

and 5 cc's 1:10,000 adrenaline.

Then start a bicarb drip.

How's the ventilating, John?

Hard to bag. Better give
me a chance for a quick tube.

Endotracheal tray
for Dr. Hach, please.

You say when, doctor.

(grunting softly)

Elder valve, please.

(grunting)

Oxygen's on.

(oxygen hisses)

(beeping intermittently)

(oxygen hisses)

(beeping)

All right, we have
a cross fibrillation.

(beeping)

Now let's defibrillate.

(oxygen hisses)

(grunting)

(indistinct speech)

Start at 400 watt
seconds for this one.

He's got a thick chest.

(device buzzes, beeps)

One, two... (device buzzes)

(grunting)

DOCTOR: Clear.

(beeping)

Let's have some lidocaine
and be ready to shock again.

He's not holding.

(beeping)

(oxygen hisses)

(doctor grunting)

(device buzzes)

(hisses)

(device buzzes)

(hisses)

(buzzing, beeping)

(device buzzing)

(oxygen hisses)

Okay, clear.

(buzzing)

How's the time?

An hour and 12 minutes.

(device buzzing)

(buzzing)

I think he's had the course.

DOCTOR: We've had
20 minutes of no activity.

Pupils are fixed and dilated.

Okay, let's quit.

(sighs)

Time?

7:15.

( somber theme playing)

Was this the Officer Olena

who was in the news

That's him.

Didn't he save a detective?

(sighs)

Me.

Oh.

Wish we could have... Yeah.

(sobbing)

Oh, Danny. Why him?

Why him?

Rona.

I'm five minutes away,
anytime you need me.

Okay?

(sobbing)

Okay.

( somber theme playing)

(door opens)

The good die wrong.

And the best
get the worst of it.

(sighs)

Maybe that's why
I'm still around.

( somber theme playing)

(air hisses)

(grunts softly)

I didn't know
surgery was a lift-off.

(chuckles)

A new kind of high.

If you've had heroin a few
hours before the anesthetic.

(chuckles)

Yessir. Heh.

The friendly skies. Heh.

(door opens)

Hey, how's that
little pig doing?

The police officer?

Yeah, yeah.

The high priest of pain.

(chuckles)

I bet he's hurting.

(chuckles)

Not anymore.

(breathes heavily)

I totaled him?

Well, things aren't too gloomy.

Is that how you
get your jollies,

killing a man?

(scoffs): I didn't kill a man.

I chopped a cop. I
put a pig in a blanket.

And that's cool?

Yeah.

Pigsticking is
worth a few points

up at Stoney Lonesome.

It's a game.

That's right.

(snickers)

The pig's gone.

I win.

I get to stay and
make license plates.

(inhales sharply)

I don't know where
you've been, Sparky,

but for the last two years
I've been ridin' a high horse,

and that means scraping
up $100 a day to stay healthy.

Now, that's a game.

Especially when you
got the whistle piggies

and the narcies running
alongside playing referee.

(scoffs)

Fun and games.

Oh, yeah.

One cartoon after another.

(chuckles)

So why don't you stuff
his uniform with bratwurst

and teach it to blow a whistle?

(groaning)

Man.

(panting)

(grunts)

(chuckles)

You'd like to
total me right now.

You see what I mean?

It's just a game.

Any number can play.

( dramatic theme playing)

(chuckling)

( dramatic theme swells)

MAN 1 (on TV): So trailing by 9,
Baltimore has about three minutes.

Unitas at quarterback.
Line is set.

Three minutes to go in the game.

Big Blue on a slant.

A screen to Matte.

MAN 1: Unitas
hands off to Bulaich.

Over right tackle. He
breaks into the clear.

Bulaich being chased
by Jack Mildren.

(crowd cheering)

Caught and down
on the 8 yard line.

First and goal to go, Baltimore.

Rona's gonna need a job.

There's an opening

in the office of the
police academy.

Somebody would
have to watch the kids.

She'll work it out, Danny.

And if she can't,
we'll be there to help.

(tsks)

Hundred and 25.

What?

Police officers killed
in America last year.

Hundred and 19 by gunshot.

We're doing a lot of dying.

It seems that way.

Who's doing the killing?

All kinds.

Everybody's got a gun.

They're getting younger
than they used to be, Ben.

Life is cheap nowadays.

Especially a cop's life.

When a patrolman
walks up to a car window,

he's gotta be ready
for his own execution.

He doesn't have any
idea who's in that car,

but he's wearing a uniform
and they know exactly who he is.

Pig.

And?

(sighs)

I'm sorry, Ben.

Hanging you up with
a lecture on a subject

you know as much about as I do.

Danny, a guy wants to be a cop,

there are new hazards that
come with the old territory.

Yeah.

But I'll be damned if I
can get used to them.

MAN 1 (on TV): Mobbed by a
gang of open tacklers led by Tony Cline

on the Baltimore 40.
One minute left to go.

MAN 2 (on TV): Ladies
and gentlemen, we interrupt

to bring you a local bulletin.

Officer Chinough Olena

of the Honolulu
Police Department

died of gunshot wounds

at Queen's Hospital
this afternoon.

Officer Olena was
decorated twice for bravery

in the past three years.

He was fatally wounded
while issuing a citation

for a routine...Well,
ain't that a shame.

He leaves behind a
widow and a young son.

Did they get the first down?
MAN 2: We return to the game.

MAN 1 (on TV): So as Baltimore
calls time out, the question becomes...

MAN: Thanks. It's probably over.

MAN 1 (on TV): Can the old pro,
Johnny Unitas, pull another one out?

It won't be easy.

Here is the situation:

Hey, you. MAN 1 (on
TV): Second and 20

at the Baltimore 40...

The curly dude in
the suit. Sit down.

MAN 1 (on TV): What
will he come up with?

I'm watching the game.

MAN 1 (on TV): We'll
see in just a moment.

You gonna need some help?

You gonna help me?

Well, I was gonna
wait till the commercial,

but if your dentist
needs the work...

BARTENDER: Hey, buddy,

you better leave now.

MAN: Yeah, you're
obliterating our view.

MAN 1 (on TV): Knocked down.
Ten seconds to go in the game.

You know, you must dig pain.

BEN: Hey, we were
just... Just leaving.

Hey, look, they're
going after the field goal.

MAN 1 (on TV): The line
is set. Jim O'Brien ready.

Ball is snapped, kick is up.

And good.

(cheers) Baltimore
leads, 31-30.

BEN: How about a
hamburger and some coffee?

To cool me off, you mean?

No. I'm hungry.

No, I think I'll just walk, Ben.

You know? Yeah.

See you in the morning, Dan.

( somber theme playing)

(buzzes)

(buzzes)

Sorry.

(buzzes)

( mysterious theme playing)

(door opens)

Hold it.

You hold it.

Where's your partner?

(speaks Hawaiian)

Come on out.

Okay, you, over here.

Both of you put your guns
down in front of me on the floor.

Move!

I want you both in the
back room. Go on. Move.

(door closes)

DANNO: Freeze.

(people chattering)

( tense theme playing)

(engine revs, tires squeal)

( suspenseful theme playing)

(engine starts)

(tires squealing)

(tires screech)

DANNO: Central,
this is Williams.

Give me a readout on
license number 3B5514.

Possible suspect in the
New Valley Shopping Center

drugstore robbery.

MAN (on radio): Williams.

This is Unit 168
at the drugstore.

Is that the guy in the mask?

DANNO: I'm not sure.
Repeat, possible suspect.

Central to Williams. License
number 3 Boston 5514,

Mustang, two-door,
not reported stolen.

MAN (on radio): Registered to
Mrs. Michael Klein, 230 Holua Street.

DANNO: That's just about where I
am. Six blocks from the drugstore.

Unit 168?

OFFICER (on radio
): We'll back you up.

( tense theme playing)

( tense theme swells)

Hold it. Police officer.

(door opens)

What's the matter? What...?

What's wrong?

I'm a police officer.
Get an ambulance.

(sobbing)

Ricky. Ricky boy. Get a doctor.

WOMAN: Please,
Ricky. You shot him.

You shot him.

Ricky.

Ricky. Ricky.

WOMAN: Please.
Ricky, can you hear me?

Ricky, please, hear me.

Hear me, Ricky.

Please get a doctor.
Please get a doctor for him.

Ricky.

Please, Ricky.

Ricky. Oh, Ricky.

(brakes squeak)

Get an ambulance fast.

Is that the guy
from the drugstore?

I don't know. Get an ambulance.

Unit 168.

Send an ambulance to
230, 230 Holua Street.

MAN: What's going on here?

Your brother's been shot.

Been shot?

Yes. Ricky?

By them?

Yes, he's a... He's
a police officer.

The ambulance
will be here shortly.

Get your hands off him.

WOMAN: Harold.

Ricky.

Well, Mom, is he alive?

Yes.

HAROLD: Did he say anything?

Did Ricky say why?

Couldn't you tell us why?

Just tell us why.

I thought he was going to shoot.

HAROLD: What are
we listening to him for?

He's just gotta keep
up a body count.

Isn't that right, storm trooper?

Don't you just get a bonus

for the amount
of people you kill?

If my dad were alive, he
would rip your head off.

Nothing in the car.

No mask, no money.

No gun?

Just this.

Soldering iron.

WOMAN (sobbing): Ricky.

No.

( melancholy theme playing)

(sirens wailing)

( tense theme playing)

It's a .38.

Yours? Yeah. Mine.

Having quite a
night, aren't you?

Was he standing
straight up when you...?

He was crouching.

Have him typed and cross-matched
for six units of whole blood.

Take him to surgery for
exploratory laparotomy.

And start a second
unit of albumin, stat.

What are his chances?

About the same
as your other friend.

His blood pressure is
falling. Bleeding internally.

Save him.

That's the name of
the game, Williams.

But we don't have
any trick plays

or long passes.

Please.

Count your beads.

( somber theme playing)

I need some answers, Danno.

Don't we all?

Was the holdup man
wearing the mask

when he got in the car?

That's just it, Steve. I... I
didn't see him get in his car.

I lost him in the parking
lot. I was guessing.

Officer Martin said
that he was about 5'9",

very nervous, with a deep voice,

used a .22 sportsman.

And Ricky Klein is 5'6"
with the voice of a boy.

Used a soldering iron.

( tense theme playing)

DOCTOR: We repaired the
perforations in his mesentery,

small bowel and large bowel,

but we had to
remove half his liver.

Did you get the bullet?

All we could do was control
the bleeding and get out.

We have to let him
stabilize before more surgery.

It may take time.

Where is the bullet?

Lodged against the spine.

Some paralysis is likely.

Come on, Danno. Let's get
over to the shopping center.

If the kid lives, he's...
He's got maybe half a life.

Maybe less.

(sighs)

What am I gonna do with that?

You know how the
newspapers will play this.

"Detective gets revenge."

Chinough died, I
had a couple of drinks,

looking for a fight.

Finally I found one.

And just maybe it's true.

Not you, Danno. I know my man.

Steve.

Seriously, my... My
reflexes flipped out.

I don't buy that.

You're a cop with ten
years' proven instincts.

Ten years of discipline.

You couldn't squeeze
a trigger in revenge.

No matter what happened.

Steve, I was glad.

When he turned and
aimed at me, I was glad.

No way. Not you. Never.

Maybe I'm not the
man you think I am.

(sighs)

Let's... Let's get over to
the shopping center, huh?

Let's get back to work.

There's no point, Steve.
That holdup man is long gone.

Maybe. Maybe not.

(inhales deeply)

(scoffs)

Is there some law that
says we gotta be stuck

in the same room with
this trigger-happy pig?

No law.

(sighs)

Mrs. Klein, we've
controlled the bleeding,

but his condition
is still serious.

These forms authorize
transfusions and more surgery.

The sooner you
sign them, the better.

What type blood does he have?

Uh, wait a minute.
There's gotta be

cleaner blood
around here than his.

Son, please calm down.

Why should I calm down?

Ricky went to the store
to get a soldering iron

and he gets zapped
by the Gestapo.

DOCTOR: It's all academic.

The hospital has plenty
of O-Negative on hand.

(scoffs): Academic.

We'll need your
husband's signature as well.

Uh, I'm, um, a widow, doctor.

Thank you, Mrs. Klein.

(scoffs)

Mr. Williams,

Ricky wouldn't
rob a drugstore or...

Or anybody. He... He
just wouldn't do that.

I know, Mrs. Klein.

Oh, now you know.
Oh, that's just great.

Why don't you just go carve
another notch in your gun?

How many does that
make, sharpshooter?

( tense theme playing)

(device beeping)

HAROLD: Why don't you just go
carve another notch in your gun?

Hang in there, Ricky.

Hang in.

( dramatic theme playing)

( dramatic theme swells)

( somber theme playing)

(engines starts)

REPORTER 1: Has
the district attorney

brought charges
against Williams?

We're still investigating.

Does that mean he's
not been suspended?

That he's still carrying a gun?

And a badge. If you
gentlemen would take the time

to check your own
newspaper files

and the department records,

you'd find that Danny
Williams never fired on anyone

unless it was
absolutely necessary.

And then only after
somebody tried to kill him.

Mr. McGarrett, the
drugstore owner said

that the bandit was
5'9" and right-handed.

Ricky Klein is 5'6"
and left-handed.

McGARRETT: I've
questioned as many as six

different eyewitnesses
to a holdup,

and each one of
them had given me

a different description
of the holdup man.

Besides, holding a
gun in your right hand

does not necessarily
mean you're right-handed.

Aren't you reaching
a bit, McGarrett?

Did I call this press
conference at a funeral?

You haven't been
available, Mr. McGarrett.

That's because my office

and the attorney
general's office

have been trying to
determine how well

Danny Williams
performed his duty.

REPORTER 2: How often
does he drink on duty?

On duty, never.

But he was seen at
a bar in a surly mood.

REPORTER 3: Unable
to speak coherently.

Bull. I was there.

Easy, Ben. Easy.

I have the sworn
statement of one of my men

that he was perfectly coherent.

REPORTER 2: Two hours
after his best friend was killed

and only 30 minutes before
the shooting of Ricky Klein?

I was off-duty.

REPORTER 2: But you
followed up an H.P.D. matter.

Well, he was on the spot. A
felony was being committed.

I'd say that was reason
enough, wouldn't you?

If there's an arraignment,

what do you think
your chances will be?

I think there's no
reason to speculate.

There is every chance
that I will plead guilty,

because as nearly
as I can tell, I am.

You don't need to talk
to any of these people.

Stand back, please. Will you
give the man some privacy?

His best friend has just been...

(sighs)

I'm sorry, Steve.

( dramatic theme playing)

My husband had nothing
but respect for the police

and I did too.

In fact, I haven't even
called a lawyer, but now...

Yeah.

Well, seeing you and
Mr. Williams look so hard

for something
that isn't there...

You think we're covering
something up, Mrs. Klein?

Like a whitewash?

I don't know.

I just wanna get
back to the hospital.

Let me assure you that
this is my investigation.

Mr. Williams has been suspended.

By his own request.

Well, a hothead like that
shouldn't be wearing a badge

in the first place.

I don't think he's a hothead.

Shooting Ricky in
our own driveway?

What is that? My God.

It's less than five minutes
drive to the shopping center.

Ricky was gone
over half an hour.

That leaves 20
minutes unaccounted for.

Did you ever try to find
anything in a discount store?

(phone ringing)

Mind if I look around?

If you like.

Oh, you really are
trying, aren't you?

When my men were here earlier,

they found that
several of these items

had identifying numbers on
them that were on the hot sheets.

They buy all of those
at the swap meets.

Well, our computer
says they're stolen,

including the tape deck
and the radio in Ricky's car.

I don't really know.

Half of the things that
the kids buy these days

seem to be stolen.

And it doesn't seem
to matter anymore.

Well, if Ricky can
produce legal bills of sale...

Mr. McGarrett,

that was the hospital calling.

Ricky is going
back into surgery.

The paralysis is worse.

Would you mind?

(tires screech)

McGARRETT:
Anything? No, nothing.

Talked to the clerks
in the discount store.

What about that
friend of Ricky's

who lives near here?

Ricky didn't go there,

according to the kid's parents.

Cab companies?

None of their drivers
were around here.

Now, you said that the car

originally turned left out of
here and then came back.

How long did that take?

Three, maybe five minutes.

But Ricky was gone
over half an hour. Why?

BEN: We checked
streets in both directions

looking for a place
where he could've dropped

the gun or the mask.
McGARRETT: Try again.

Cover the streets in which
the car originally headed.

Unless you have, uh,
some more hunches.

Put your energy into
other cases, Steve.

You're wasting it here.

Look, Danno,

I'm on this case
and you're off it.

You're only a witness.

(sighs): Okay, fellas.

But I am following
your original hunch

that the kid might have been...

That's what's wrong.

My hunches are all
bent out of shape.

When Chinough
died, I... I lost it.

You've lost too. This is
probably out of your hands now.

Lost, no. Heat,
yes. Plenty. Sure.

The newspapers are
climbing all over the governor.

That's typical. That's expected.

And the attorney general
has to make a statement

by this afternoon.

He's got to give them my head.

I haven't finished yet, Danno.

I'll be at the hospital, Steve.

Danno.

You better not give up on me.

( jazzy action theme playing)

(indistinct speech)

(tires screech)

(tires squeak)

(tires squeak)

( mysterious theme playing)

BOY: What's the matter?

Can't you find your size?

I'm calling the police.

Look, lady, I am the police.

BOY (laughs): I
should have guessed,

'cause you're sure
not Robin Hood.

( dramatic theme playing)

CHE: It's been to
the laundry, I'm afraid.

Somebody gave it
a good, fast wiping.

What about the
bottom of the shells?

Too smudged.

The coat and mask gave us
some particles, hair and odors.

All of which are inconclusive,

since they could have come
from any of these Goodwill clothes.

CHIN HO: We knocked on
every door in the neighborhood.

Two people heard
a car skid to a stop

at the Goodwill box that night

and then pull away immediately.

But actually, uh, nobody saw it.

I talked to a man who owned
some of the clothing on the top.

The more recent.

He dropped them off in
the afternoon of that day.

We've cracked crime
syndicates and dope rings.

We've nailed double
agents, rapists and murderers,

and here we are with a
lousy little drugstore heist

on our hands with
Danno's life on the line,

and we can't crack it. I mean...

Somebody oughta call a cop.

(phone rings)

McGarrett.

Yes, John.

Yes, I understand. I don't
agree, but I understand.

All right, goodbye.

(phone clicks)

The attorney general.

He's bringing charges
against Danno.

Felonious assault.

(sighs)

But if the kid dies...

Danny goes the whole route.

( dramatic theme playing)

( dramatic theme swells)

( tense theme playing)

( tense theme swells)

DANNO: How is he?

Well, we relieved the
pressure on his spinal cord.

The paralysis?

Time will tell, Mr. Williams.

Time will tell. Oh, doc.

I can't promise anything,

but it looks like he
has a decent chance

for full recovery.

In fact, I think
he's gonna make it.

(sighs): Thank God.

Doc, may I ask the
boy some questions?

I don't think he'll stay
awake long enough

to give you any answers.

But you can try.

(sighs)

Ricky, how do you feel?

Spaced out.

Mrs. Klein, I know this
is a bad time to intrude,

but it's the only time
Ricky's been conscious.

I've got to ask him
a couple of questions

that might clear up
some of our doubts.

(sighs)

Well, I guess that
we have to know too.

Ricky,

we found the clothes,
the gun and the mask.

You hear me, son?

Yeah.

You found the stuff
in the Goodwill box.

Ricky, did you
rob the drugstore?

RICKY: No, Mom. We...

Ricky, as God as your witness?

RICKY: As God as my witness,

Mom, I didn't do it.

I didn't.

Sleep is the best
thing for him now.

I think it's time to run one.

What?

Bluff. Stick around.

Well, looks like he's
gonna live after all.

That kind of mess
up your average?

What happens to Williams?

One week with no recess?

For felonious assault,

Dan Williams can
get one to five years.

(tsks)

One to five, huh?

Ricky could get, uh, a
whole lifetime of paralysis.

That seems pretty fair
to me, doesn't it to you?

W-what's this?
Another sharpshooter?

McGARRETT: I'd like
to show you something

that's often overlooked

by a guy wiping
prints off a gun.

Particularly when
he's in a hurry.

Uh, save it for Zap comic books.

(bullet clicks)

To load a gun, most people

insert the shells...

with their thumb.

And a thumbprint
was all we needed.

Ricky said "we."

( tense theme playing)

( action theme playing)

Ben, get him.

( action theme swells)

You were with Ricky
that night, weren't you?

(whispers): Yeah.

Ricky didn't even know I
was knocking over the store

until I jumped in the car.

And then he dropped
you off at the Goodwill box.

(sighs)

He saw us leaving
the parking lot.

I figured he had our number,

so I just dumped
everything and ran home.

McGARRETT: Get up.

(grunts)

Why don't you go
and tell your mother

and get your kid brother
off the hook completely?

(stammers, pants)

No.

No.

Somebody has to, you know.

(groans)

(sobbing)

All right, Ben.

(sniffles)

(sighs)

(sighs)

And how are you doing, bruddah?

Better.

Suddenly very much better.

( triumphant theme playing)

I'm just glad that one of
us didn't give up on me.

( triumphant theme swells)

( upbeat surf theme playing)
