Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 5, Episode 20 - Little Girl Blue - full transcript

Two men kidnap a little girl. Cornered, they hide out in a bunker that overlooks a highway. One of the men is brain damaged from a war injury and the other has a weak heart. The men have enough weapons to hold off the authorities. McGarrett & Co. desperately try to find a way to rescue the girl in time.

( upbeat surf theme playing)

( dramatic theme playing)

Take her.

Hi, Luther.

Hi, Debbie.

Shh.

(springs squeaking)

(starts engine)

( suspenseful theme playing)

Frank.

What?

I see it, dummy.

He's waving, Frank.

Just play it cool.
Pull over to the side.

Did you hear what I said?
I said, pull over to the side.

Good morning, sir. The
reason I stopped you

is because your rear license
is about ready to fall off.

Oh, thanks. We'll fix
it when we get home.

You're welcome,
sir. Have a good day.

Sir, may I see your
driver's license, please?

Your license, please?

( action theme playing)

(bones break, gasps)

You idiot. I told
you to stay cool.

Why'd you do it? Why?

I was afraid, Frank.

I don't have a license.

(whimpers)

Get in the car.

Start it. Get out of here.

(revving engine)

Oh, you stupid
oaf. You flooded it.

Take the kid.

Come on, Luther. Come on.

We'll get that car. Come on.

(tires screeching)

( dramatic theme playing)

Get his gun and that
ammo belt. Hurry up.

Did you get it? Come
on, hurry up, will you?

Pick the kid up.

(grunts)

Frank, you sick again?

Heart.

My heart.

Frank. We gotta keep going.
The cops will be after us.

In there. That bunker.

( slow, dramatic theme playing)

(moaning)

(breathing heavily)

We... We gotta stay here.

Not for long, just...

Just till this pain goes away.

Then we'll split.

Right... Right
now... Right now...

Oh, damn it.

Please, get me out of here.

(whimpering)

Take this jacket off, okay?

Hey, Frank.

Look at her.

She slept through it all.

(sirens approaching)

She was supposed to, dummy.

(sirens blaring)

(inaudible dialogue)

How's Larry?

He's dead.

There's two men up there,
one of 'em carrying a child.

They have a rifle, ammo,
Larry's .38 and the belt.

Witness here says he
saw them disappearing

over the crest of the hill.

Went right around
that turn over there.

Chances are
they're still up there,

probably hiding in some brush.

Okay, let's go. Glen,
you get the cars,

get the public out of here.

Keep under cover.
Hold your fire.

Remember, there's a
kid up there. Let's go.

( suspenseful theme playing)

(gun cocks)

(gunshot)

(gunshot)

(gunshot)

(gunshot)

(gunshot)

( dramatic theme playing)

(gunfire)

(grunts)

Hey, they got Tommy pinned
down in that car behind us.

Sarge, let's get him. Come on.

(gunshot)

Give me the mike. Here.

Central, Sergeant Lukela.

Send an ambulance, support
units to Diamond Head,

just beyond the
lighthouse... on the double.

And also get me McGarrett.

(sirens blaring)

They're in an
abandoned Army bunker.

Danno, get us a chopper.
We're gonna need some eyes.

Tommy's pinned behind
that blue and white...

and Larry's dead.

All right, move some
cars into position

with men to back up and support.

( dramatic theme playing)

Cover them.

(starts engine)

(gunshot)

Chopper's on its way, Steve.
I told 'em to pick me up here.

Good. How do you feel, Tommy?

We didn't even
see the guy, Steve.

Take it easy. Never mind.

Okay, load him.

Duke, I want every
available man out here.

Has anyone tried
to talk him down yet?

Not yet. Get me a bullhorn.

(siren blaring)

You, on the top of the hill.

This is McGarrett,
Hawaii Five-0.

I know you can
hear me. Come out.

Leave your weapon where it is
and come out with your hands up.

Shut him up.

No one will fire if you
bring the child out now.

Dummy, did you hear what I
said? Cut him down. Shut him up.

( dramatic theme playing)

Danno... take a ride up there
and see if you can spot him,

but be sure to stay well
out of range of that rifle.

Here's the plate number.

Duke, uh, contact
Army Engineers.

Any blueprints, specs they've
got on these bunker sites,

get 'em for us.

Central Dispatch? McGarrett.

WOMAN (on radio): Central
Dispatch, standing by for McGarrett.

Emergency. Owner's registration,

1962 white Ford four-door sedan,

license 1-Baker-1113,
Hawaiian. Emergency.

A 1960 white, four-door
sedan, make Ford,

license number 1-Baker-1113.

Confirmed, thank you. 10-4.

Danno, make sure you stay
well out of the range of that rifle.

I'm getting a good view
of the top of the hill now.

I can't see them. They
must be way in the back.

Is there a blind side where we
can work our way up to them?

I can't be sure, Steve.

The roof juts out quite a way.

I think he has a good view.
We'll circle and have a look.

CHIN HO: Yeah, Steve.

Chin, I just gave H.P.D. a
license number to check.

Run it down.

Will do.

Any H.P.D. report
on a missing kid?

Haven't heard anything
yet. But I'll check.

Yeah. Check the hospital too
and find out how Tommy Ewa is.

Call you back.

Identification section?

There are no approach
routes they can't cover.

No matter what kind of
encirclement we lay out,

there aren't enough
men in H.P.D.

to draw the net tight enough
to hold them once it gets dark.

That means we've got to get
them out of there before dark.

Without hurting that child.

Yeah.

Yeah, that's the kicker.

Luther, I wanna go home.

I know, honey. (
sirens in distance)

Pretty soon. Pretty soon.

(sirens blaring)

Okay, set up over
there. Move it.

Danny, I got a make on that car.

I'm on my way to
check it out now.

Steve?

Yeah, Danno.

Chin's got a make
on that car. Go.

Registered to a Frank Denton.

Address, a fleabag
on Hotel Street.

His roomie's name
is Luther Shepp.

Luther stands about 6'7".

Well, that fits the description
that witness gave us.

(machine buzzes)

Five-0 Control.

Central Dispatch for McGarrett.

Yeah, McGarrett.
We have a positive ID

on Denton and Shepp.
Two previous arrests.

They work together.
What charges?

Shoplifting and petty larceny.
Suspended sentence for Shepp,

who was remanded to
custody of Tripler Hospital.

He's still on
outpatient therapy.

Brain damage,
result of war wounds.

Denton did 30 days
for the second offense.

There's a child with
them up there on that hill.

Are either of them married?
Neither have been married.

They have no children of record.

Okay. Get me a copy of
the mug shot of both men.

Emergency priority. 10-4.

Danno, call Tripler.

Contact the psychiatrist who's
been treating, uh, Luther Shepp.

Anything you can
find out that'll clue us in

to what we're dealing with here.

Police department. I
wanna report a missing child.

Steve? I spoke to
Luther's psychiatrist.

He can't believe that
either of the guys on that hill

are Denton or Shepp.

Why not? He knows 'em both.

Luther was an
Army officer, injured.

He came out of
surgery physically intact,

but with the mind of a child.

He's incapable of anything
more than petty stuff.

Officer? That's the big guy.

What about Denton, the
other guy? What's his story?

DANNO: They met at the
hospital. He was an orderly.

He also has a
severe heart condition.

That could explain why
they stopped up there.

(machine buzzes)

BEN: Let me have
McGarrett. Steve.

Ben on the phone for you.

What do you got, Ben? A lot.

First off, we located
the child's grandmother,

and we're flying
her out there now.

Grandmother? What
about the kid's mother?

She's in Maui. She's
being flown in too.

Good.

Steve, the grandmother
turns out to be...

You ready?
- -Mrs. Hubberd Scott.

The Scott fortune? Right.

That's the motive. What else?

Che gave us a rundown
on the kidnap room.

Prints everyplace.

Luther and Frank's, so
there's no surprise there.

Anything else? Well, plenty.

And a twister for you.

It looks like it might
have been an inside job.

How do you figure that?

For one, the kid's
door was left unlocked.

Che checked everything
in the kid's room:

toys, clothes, everything.

There was a plastic
cup on the bed stand.

She had a cup of hot
chocolate before going to bed.

There was a mild
barbiturate in the chocolate.

No wonder the kid was
asleep all the way up the hill.

Good work, Ben.

And tell Che too.

Oh, uh, Ben?

Get over to the kidnap
house, pick up that babysitter...

What's her name? Anna
Kawena. What charge?

Well, if she put,
uh, sleeping pills

in the kid's chocolate,

it's complicity in kidnapping.

Go, Ben.

Mrs. Scott? I'm
McGarrett, Five-0.

Thanks. Yes.

You're Debbie
Scott's grandmother.

Yes. I-I... I think
you should see this.

It came in the...

Just a minute, please.

Kimo, give me a
letter kit, please?

Drop it in here, please.

When did this arrive?

Oh, about 11 this
morning. No, about 11:30.

Why didn't you call the police?

Well, I was frightened.
It said not to.

Strange.

It was mailed yesterday
afternoon in Waikiki.

Why is that strange?

It was mailed before
the kidnapping.

Isn't that strange?

Duke?

Get a man with a bike,

rush this down to
Che's laboratory.

Would you take a
look at these, please?

Uh-heh.

That's...

Good Lord.

You know those men?

Why, th-this big
one, it's Luther.

Eadie visits Tripler,
the V.A. hospital.

She talks to the boys,
uh, cheers them up,

and she... She
befriended this big one.

She asked me to get him
odd jobs around the house.

And Frank, this one, turned
up with Luther one day.

Do you know they
both have records?

Oh, I found that
out the hard way.

Things began to disappear:
garden hose, rakes, shears.

I fired them both. Does
Eadie know this happened?

She's being flown in
from Maui right now.

Can you tell us when
your daughter left Honolulu?

I don't know much
about Eadie's private life.

Generation gap. What
difference does that make?

Mrs. Scott, the more I
know about the situation,

the quicker I can put
the pieces together.

Now, please, let's
not waste time, huh?

(sighs)

Debbie was born out of wedlock.

Maybe it'd have been better
if she'd never been born at all.

God help me for saying
that, but it's the truth.

Eadie's no more ready to
be a mother, to raise a child.

But she wouldn't take
the... The necessary steps.

And then when Debbie was born,

Eadie wanted to give
her up for adoption.

Is that so?

I offered to take the
baby from her, but no.

Typically, Eadie
changed her mind.

Couldn't part with her.

I don't know. She d...

She's always doing something
to shame me, to use me.

She's forged my name on
checks, on charge accounts.

Maybe... Maybe once I
should have prosecuted her.

I... I don't know.

But to raise a child?
She's not fit for that.

Once I... I even thought of
instituting custody proceedings.

I couldn't go through with that.

Is she away often?

Is that really important?

Yeah. And
particularly convenient

that she was miles away,

on a different island, when
the kidnapping took place.

Mr. McGarrett, many
things are possible,

but that my daughter would
jeopardize her child's li...?

No, Mr. McGarrett. No.

Mrs. Scott, you
got a ransom note.

Your grandchild's up there
on that hill with two men

who are friends
of your daughter's.

Now, what would
you make of that?

I don't know. I just don't know.

Steve.

Excuse me.

It's Ben on the horn.

Oh.

Yeah, Ben. What do you got?

Steve, I went to pick up
the babysitter, Anna Kawena.

She'd taken off. I
checked her own pad

and found she'd scooted out
of there too, bag and baggage.

Put out an APB
on her. Already did.

Danno?

Steve, we've got all
the hardware ready:

hand grenades, tear gas.

As long as that kid's up
there, we can't use 'em.

(helicopter blades whirring)

Is that where they are? Yeah.

Oh, God, how could
this have happened?

I've left her with Anna
before. Where was Anna?

Those friends of yours...
That giant, that mental cripple,

and his friend they've
got Debbie up there.

What? Luther?

No, you're wrong. You're wrong.

Ask him. Go ahead and ask him.

Eadie, if this is some crazy
scheme to get my money,

you can have it.

You've always been
welcome to my money.

Whatever you
want of it, take it.

How much does it cost to
get Debbie down from there?

Twenty thousand? How much?

Shut up! Shut up
and leave me alone!

Leave me alone!

Debbie? I want my baby!

I want my baby! I want my baby!

( dramatic theme playing)

So she's telling the truth.

My little girl is really up
there with Frank and Luther?

And you didn't know that?

No, I didn't know.

Well, then, she's
gonna be all right.

You see, because
you don't know Luther.

He loves children.
He wouldn't hurt a fly.

And he especially loves Debbie.

Maybe he wouldn't hurt a fly...

but he's already killed
two police officers.

Oh. Oh, my God.

Will you let me talk to him?

Do you think those
men would listen to you?

Yes, Luther will.
I'm sure of Luther.

There are two of them up there.

One of them has a gun and
one of them has the brains.

Steve, Che's on
the phone. Urgent.

Excuse me.

Yeah, Che? Steve.

The words in the kidnap note

were formed from
magazine cutouts.

A European offset, coded stock.

Well, that should
make it an easy trace.

It was. A magazine
published in England. Uh,

London Fashions.

And get this, Steve.

There are only five
local subscribers.

Guess who one
of 'em was. Tell me.

Wow.

Okay, Che. Thank you.

Which one of them up there
did you make the deal with?

Deal? What are
you talking about?

You subscribe to a magazine
called London Fashions?

Yes. My mother gave me

a gift subscription
to it last Christmas.

Well, what are you driving at?

Those men up there,
maybe if we told them

that all bets were off,

that the plan backfired.

That now we know that
it was an inside job, huh?

What are you saying?

I'm trying to make
it easier for us

to save the life of your child.

Maybe if those men up there
know that they didn't have to

stand the brunt
of a kidnap charge,

that someone paid
them to do the job,

maybe they'd come
down... Oh, I see.

You think I hired them?

She told you that I was
capable of that, didn't she?

Oh, damn.

It's a lie.

It's a lie. Look...

I don't know who is lying,
but I'm gonna find out.

Now, you say you
wanna talk to Luther?

Okay, Miss Scott. Let's go.

( dramatic theme playing)

Duke?

Okay.

From... In this
thing? From here?

It's the only safe way.

No, Mr. McGarrett.

The sound of this thing alone
would scare Luther to death.

I've already talked
to him through this.

Mr. McGarrett, Luther is
more of a child than Debbie is.

It will not work.

No, no. I have got to
get up closer to him.

I have to talk to him naturally.

It's much too dangerous.

Mr. McGarrett, Luther
is a friend of mine.

He will not shoot at me.
He will not shoot at me.

Oh, I see. Oh...

You think that I
think that I will be safe

because I hired him.

Well, frankly I don't
care what you think.

You just get me up
there closer to him.

Please.

Come on. Danno?

Okay, take the point.
Give her a hand.

Duke, get six rifles. Don't
fire unless on command.

Let's go.

( dramatic theme playing)

Luther?!

Frank?!

It's me! Eadie!

My mommy. It's my mommy.

Mommy! Mommy! No!

Mommy!

We'll use the kid.

We'll show 'em the kid! Come on.

(gasps) ( dramatic
theme playing)

Mommy. Please, I
wanna go to Mommy!

Mommy!

I wanna go to my mommy! Mommy!

Debbie! Debbie! That's my baby!

Are you all right, Debbie?!

Let me go to her!
Please, let me go to her.

LUTHER: Don't come any closer.

I don't wanna hurt her.

I don't wanna hurt you, Eadie.

Go back down the hill!

Leave me alone! Please?!

Oh, God!

Debbie! Debbie, honey. Debbie.

Debbie! Debbie,
love, it's Mommy!

Debbie, I'm coming!

Frank? Tell me what to do.

( dramatic theme playing)

Tell me! Tell me!

EADIE: Debbie.

Okay, honey. Your mommy
will be down in a minute.

Debbie.

Debbie.

Debbie.

Debbie. Oh, God, Debbie.

Oh. Oh.

Are you all right?

Debbie, are you all right?

Oh. I love you.

What you did up
there on that hill?

I never realized you
loved Debbie so much.

I don't think I
realized it either.

It's okay. It's okay.

Debbie? Honey?

I wanna ask you a question.

They made me a... Afraid.

Luther acted funny.

Debbie, what about
the other one? Frank?

What happened to him up there?

Frank's just sitting there.

He fell asleep.

Okay, Debbie.

Danno.

Take them over to the
van. They can rest there.

Come on, sweetheart. Here we go.

Duke?

We're going up that hill.

( dramatic theme playing)

( dramatic theme playing)

(sirens approaching)

Communications
check. Chopper, come in.

Communications
check. Chopper, come in.

Come in, chopper.

Ben, get yourself a vest and
a weapon. We're going up.

Chin, you can take
over communications.

Okay. Duke...

you can stop traffic now from
the lighthouse to Fort Ruger.

Danno... we're gonna
split into three units.

You take the left flank,
Ben, you take the right.

All set? All set.

Yeah, when you get
to the positions on top,

I'll signal the chopper

to start dropping
tear gas and smoke.

Now, I wanna give him one
more chance to come down,

so hold your fire.
If he doesn't...

I'll go up the middle. Okay, go.

(helicopter whirring overhead)

H.P.D. Chopper
1, this is McGarrett.

Go.

Luther... we don't
wanna hurt you...

so walk down now.

Just leave your rifle
there and come on down.

No one's going to harm you.

( eerie theme playing)

Luther Shepp...

this is your last
chance to come down.

Let's go.

(gunshots)

( dramatic theme playing)

(coughing)

Hold it.

Hold your fire.

Sergeant. Sir!

Sergeant. That hill up
there, we can take it.

Yes, sir.

Yes, sir.

We have enough men.

And we have some airpower, sir.

Captain.

Captain, why... Why don't
you take it easy now and...?

You've done your
share, we'll mop up.

Come on. Come on
back to the base with me.

Let me take your weapon.

Thank you, sir.

( victorious theme playing)

Take these two
rifles off my right arm.

Duke. Send a stretcher
up for Denton's body.

Get the child and two
women, bring 'em over here.

Easy, Luther.

Yeah.

Sit down.

All right?

We know that you never
meant to hurt Debbie, Luther.

No, I wouldn't hurt
Debbie. I wouldn't do that.

But somebody hired you
to kidnap her? Didn't they?

No.

It was just we.
Uh, me and Frank.

She promised to give us
money to take Debbie for a picnic.

Who? Who promised to give you
money? Who hired you, Luther?

Eadie... I didn't mean it.

Uh, lady...

I told Frank I
didn't wanna do it.

But he said it'd be so easy.

He said you'd give
us lots of money.

Lots of it.

Frank said... you
wouldn't do nothing

to hurt your own
grandchild, would you?

Oh, God. Mother.

For Debbie. I did it for Debbie.

How could you?

Danno... give Mrs. Scott
her rights and book her.

( dramatic theme playing)

( upbeat surf theme playing)
