Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 5, Episode 2 - Death Wish on Tantalus Mountain - full transcript

Champion race car driver Alex Pareno arrives in Hawaii to attempt to break the record for driving up Tantalus Mountain. However, his chief mechanic is bludgeoned to death after catching someone tampering with Pareno's car. Later, a second mechanic is killed while test driving the car. McGarrett eventually discovers plenty of suspects ranging from Pareno's fiancée Angela, who was being blackmailed by an ex-lover, to Pareno himself. However, it is eventually discovered that the killer is someone very close to Pareno.

( upbeat surf theme playing)

Slow it down. Slow it down.

All right, hold it. Hold it.

Good.

Now, when they drop it,

I want it to be very
gentle with that machine.

I want you to be
very gentle now.

All right, bring it
down. Bring it down.

(ship horn honks)

(truck door closes)

There she is. She's
all yours, Dmitri.

Be very gentle.

Hey, Gordon. Alex. How are you?

On behalf of the Sports
Car Club of Hawaii,

welcome and aloha.

Thank you very much, Gordon.
I want you to meet my family.

My fiancée, Miss Angela
Sordi. How do you do?

My son, Niki. How do you do?

And that, uh, big fellow there,

that's, uh, Dmitri
Burgholtz, my mechanic.

Aloha to you all.

Gordon and I have torn up

quite a few tracks
together, haven't we?

Le Mans. Watkins Glen.

St-Jovite, Quebec.

But now you're into hill
climb. ALEX: Oh, yes.

There is nothing
like it, Gordon.

One man against a mountain.

Against time. The ultimate race.

Tantalus.

Yes.

Five miles of uphill treachery.

S-curves, switchbacks,

sheer drops of
thousands of feet.

Uh, there's nothing
to match it in Europe.

GORDON: You've studied it well.

ALEX: I'm surprised
you never tried it, Gordon.

GORDON: Oh, no thanks. Not me.

(Alex laughs)

ALEX: Yes, I know
all the legends.

That the mountain is jinxed.

A tower of evil.

The answer to every
driver's death wish.

But you see, Gordon...

I have everything to live for.

Everything. A son
to carry on my name.

A beautiful woman I love. Huh?

Ah, no chance for a death wish.

No chance at all.

(engine starts)

Oh, excuse me.

That's fine. You're doing fine.

Good. Easy. Easy.

A little more. A little more.

All right, hold it, hold it.
Hold it there. That's fine.

Well... Thank you.

Oh, thank you.

Now, let's not forget
the guest of honor, huh?

(ship horn sounds)

That's a good girl.

Oh. (laughs)

(applause)

All right. Everybody.

Champagne. It's on
Gordon. It's on Gordon.

Come on. Gather around. Come on.

( lively theme playing)

( slow, suspenseful
theme playing)

(door opens)

Who is it? Who... Who is here?!

Somebody is here.

(grunts)

( funky theme playing)

McGARRETT: What
have we got, Danno?

Dmitri Burgholtz, master
mechanic. Age: 40.

Been working for Pareno
12 years on and off.

He had a room back there.

The lights were still
on when we got here.

We figure he heard a noise,
came through that doorway,

and met whoever it was here.

He was apparently killed
by a blow to the cranium.

Left temporal region.

Time of death?

Sometime between 1 and 4 a.m.

We'll check it out later.

Thanks, Doc.

No sign of a struggle.

Well, check H.P.D.
for prowler squawks

in the neighborhood
anyway, Danno.

Chin, anything you get
on the victim's personal life.

Any contacts he had in Hawaii

outside of this house.

Che... any make on
the murder weapon?

Could be anything here.
Could be nothing here.

We'll look at it under a lens.

Who found the
body? Pareno himself.

Called H.P.D.
about 7 this morning.

He must have called
Washington next.

I've already gotten three blasts
from the State Department.

One of those.

Yeah.

You get a statement from Pareno?

Not yet. He's, uh,
not here, Steve.

He's not here?

Didn't H.P.D. tell him to stay?

They did, but he
took off anyway.

Left his lady friend
here to let us in.

Her name's, uh, Angela Sordi.

(soft piano music
playing in distance)

(soft piano music
playing on radio)

(music stops)

Miss Sordi?

McGarrett, Five-0.

Where's Mr. Pareno?

He's out on the
mountain with Niki.

He was told to remain
here until we arrive.

What is he doing
on the mountain?

(scoffs)

Alex doesn't mourn
like other men.

That's what makes him Alex.

Where were you this morning
between, let's say, 1 and 4:00?

In my room.

Our room.

Did you see anything
or hear anything?

Nothing important.

Well, tell me anyway.

Well, it was...

It was about 10 after 1. I...

I heard a noise outside.

I wasn't sleeping
very well. I, uh...

I went to the window.

I saw... two men
getting out of a car.

A taxi.

They were very noisy. Uh...

Maybe they were
drunk. I... I don't know.

I did see that one
of them was Dmitri.

Yeah. And what
about the other one?

I, uh... A y... A
younger man. I...

I couldn't see very well.

How young was he?

Uh... I couldn't tell.

It was dark. His... His
face was turned away. I...

I don't know. I... don't know.

(soft piano music resumes)

( funky theme playing)

I can't go into
that turn too deep.

It's a decreasing-radius curve.

But from there it just
saddles up to the top.

Not bad.

Nine S-curves, 12 hairpins,

and an unrailed flat-out

with a 2,000-foot
drop on both sides.

Not bad?

Not as bad as
unwanted company, Niki.

Mr. Pareno?

Yes. What is it?

McGarrett, Hawaii Five-0.

I'm Saunders, State Department.

You reported a
homicide this morning.

You were asked to
remain on the premises.

Why aren't you there?

Well, Mr. McGarrett, the
first thing you must learn

is that I am not
accustomed to taking orders.

I assure you, sir, it's
only because we're

concerned with your safety.

After what
happened last night...

I need no reminder of
what happened last night.

Dmitri was a good
man, a good friend.

How good a friend?

Twelve years, and not a
cross word between us.

Employer, employee,
that didn't matter.

We shared the same
feelings about cars,

about... racing.

A feeling no one
else quite understood.

I can't imagine why
anyone would do him harm.

Well, maybe they
were trying to get to you.

No evidence, of course.

Have you thought about that?

Strangely enough, I
have, Mr. McGarrett.

I have sent for the best
mechanic in California

to check my car
from top to bottom,

just in case it has
been tampered with.

That is what you
were thinking, isn't it?

Yeah, and I was also thinking

that you should have protection

for the rest of
your stay in Hawaii.

I don't like bodyguards.

They interfere with
my personal freedom.

I suggest one anyway.

And I decline. You
ask Mr. Saunders here

what my diplomatic status is.

Oh, I don't have to
ask Mr. Saunders.

I've heard nothing else
since 8:00 this morning.

Very well. We can't force
you to take a bodyguard.

But as of now, there's
gonna be a squad car

in front of your home
whether you like it or not.

Thank you for
regarding my feelings.

Thank you very much.

Father, they're just
trying to protect your life.

When I want your
opinion, I will ask for it, Niki!

(speaks in Spanish)

Mr. Pareno, there's a
point to be discussed.

(car door opens)

Need a lift?

(car door closes)

Guess I'd better. (
car engine starts)

(tires screech)

Mr. McGarrett? Yep.

If I s... Uh, saw something
funny last night...

I mean, not a crime
or anything, but...

Should you tell me?
Yeah. What'd you see?

Angela.

My father's fiancée.

I saw her leave the
house during the night.

Very late.

I got suspicious,
so I followed her.

She walked to the Kahala Hotel.

It's about half a
kilometer down the road.

She went past
the parking area...

around the side near the pool.

And then a man got out
of a car and followed her.

They talked for a
while near the pool.

Maybe 5, 6 minutes.

Then they said goodbye.

And I ran back to the house
so I'd get there before she did.

What time was all this?

One-thirty, 2:00.

Did you, uh, recognize the man?

He was a man I saw at the docks

when we got here yesterday.

(sighs)

He looked at Angela.

And then she looked at him.

And I knew that
they'd met before.

( suspenseful theme playing)

(door opens)

(engine starts)

(tires screeching)

McGARRETT: Last night,
when you followed Angela,

was Dmitri already dead?

NIKI: I don't know.
I didn't even know

he was dead until this morning.

McGARRETT: Then why did you
follow her? What were you suspicious of?

NIKI: It's really got
nothing to do with murder.

McGARRETT: Let me
be the judge of that, Niki.

NIKI: She does, uh, things
behind my father's back.

She sees people he
doesn't know about.

And I just don't want him hurt.

( upbeat theme playing)

Mr. McGarrett...

what I said about
Angela, it's true.

But I didn't see her
do anything wrong.

She's not in trouble, is she?

Don't worry, Niki, we
don't accept anything

unless we check and recheck it.

Oh, by the way.

Someone told us they saw a man

bringing Dmitri
home the other night.

Young man.

You?

No.

Okay.

Goodbye.

( suspenseful theme playing)

(wrench clanks)

Looks good to me.
I'd like to take her out

to the same terrain
you're gonna run.

Well, I think you're
entitled to that

after coming
3,000 miles to help.

(tires screeching)

ALEX: Well, Mr. McGarrett,

it seems we can put your, uh,

tampered-car theory to rest.

Do let me know when
you have another.

I have them all the time.

(tires screeching)

( dramatic theme playing)

Lab said maybe
sabotage, maybe not.

We could tell very little

from the twisted pieces
of metal that were left.

And less from the
driver that was killed.

How many people want
you dead, Mr. Pareno?

How much paper do
you have, Mr. McGarrett?

The list is rather long.

Business rivals
throughout Europe.

Some say I've dealt
with them ruthlessly.

Some are correct.

A few disgruntled employees.

A jealous husband
here and there.

Oh, I'm sorry, darling.

You have an ex-wife
living in Spain.

Do you not?

Yes.

Any enmity there?

(sighs) Probably.

But Felicia?

No, Mr. McGarrett.

She wouldn't know a
carburetor from a door handle.

Well, she could hire
someone who did.

Not Felicia. No, no, no, no.

She's not very good at planning.

I mean no insult
to your mother, Niki.

I know, Father.

Besides, she'd gain
nothing from my death.

There was a full settlement
at the time of our divorce.

She's not in my will any longer.

Who is?

The two people most
dear to me, Mr. McGarrett.

What do you propose
to make of that?

Two people are dead. At
least one of them was murdered.

We follow all lines of
investigation, Mr. Pareno.

There are no
exceptions, including you.

Now, Dmitri knew
no one in Hawaii

outside of this household.

How about the rest of you?

You know anyone here?

Racing officials.

Aside from them, anyone else?

No.

No.

No one?

Not me.

We have information

that someone brought Dmitri home

in a taxi the other night.

Any idea who that was?

No.

Very well. We'll, uh...

We'll have a
description soon enough.

We're talking to
cab drivers now.

We'll keep in touch.

Well, don't take too
long, Mr. McGarrett.

We're leaving
right after the race.

Race? What are you racing with?

Did you think I was
quitting, Mr. McGarrett?

You don't know me
very well, do you?

I've sent for a duplicate
car from California.

I want that car checked
thoroughly before you race it.

For once we agree,
Mr. McGarrett.

I have no death wish.

The car will be checked

by the second-best
mechanic in Europe:

me.

Mr. McGarrett.

I've got to talk to you.

Go ahead. (sighs)

When you asked me
about Dmitri, I lied.

I did bring him home.

And I put him to bed.

And then I left.

Why did you lie about it?

I didn't want my father to know.

You see, Dmitri drank a lot.

Especially before a race.

And I was supposed to watch him

and make sure he
didn't go in any bars.

But he slipped away.

When I saw he was gone,

I ran to the nearest bar
down on Waialae Avenue,

and there he was, drunk.

So I got him in a taxi
and brought him home.

If my father found
out, he'd flip out.

Well, I'm not exactly
overjoyed about it.

You could have saved us
an awful lot of man-hours

by telling the truth.

I'm sorry.

I'm really sorry.

You won't say anything
to him, will you?

No.

There's no need for your father

to know about it, Niki.

For now, anyway.

Thank you.

The kid said he followed
Angela to a meeting with a guy.

And she said she has
no friends in Hawaii.

Which one is lying?

Well, maybe both.

I want the book on
these people, Chin.

Interpol, mainland police,
newspaper morgues.

Get on it with Ben as
soon as you get back.

Yeah.

( light, suspenseful
theme playing)

It's a beautiful day.

I... I think I'll change
and go shopping.

Mm. Sounds expensive.

Ha-ha. Did I ever say it
would be anything else?

Ah, poor darling.

It must be boring for you, huh?

Sitting here day after day...

waiting for the
race to be over? No.

No, no. You're wrong.

I'm never bored. I have
everything I could possibly want

right here with you.

( sultry theme playing)

Well, we struck gold
at The Advertiser.

Let's have it. BEN: Alex Pareno:

king of the swingers, before,
during and after marriage.

Till he met Angela.

That seemed to be all
the women he needed.

To prove it, he bopped
a few guys in nightclubs

for making cracks about her.

Heh. That Angela's
no shrinking violet.

Jumped in a public fountain
in Paris three years ago.

Did a kind of a
one-woman aquacade. Hm.

There she is, throwing a
bottle of wine at a photographer.

Anything on the kid? BEN: Yeah.

He was kicked out of an
English school for cheating.

Then tried to set
fire to the dorm.

Claimed it was only a prank.

Nice family. I wonder
if they pray together.

(both chuckle)

Okay, so they're a pretty
wild bunch. But murder?

I don't know.

There's still the mystery man

Niki said Angela
met at the hotel.

He could be the
key to everything.

If he exists.

Ben, Chin... trail Angela Sordi.

Let's see how much Niki
made up and how much is true.

Okay.

Dressed up for a date, Angela?

I don't have any time
for foolishness, Niki.

Get out of my way.

You know you won't get
away with it, Angela, don't you?

What are you talking about?

Another meeting
near a swimming pool?

You followed me?

Was there something
you didn't want known?

Niki, there are things
you don't understand.

Things you misinterpret.

Oh, I'll bet.

All right, now, don't
tell anybody about this.

For your father's sake.

Why don't you try to
persuade me, Angela?

Get out of my way.

Get out, or I'll
press this horn and...

And we'll both tell
our stories to Alex.

I'll give you three
seconds starting now.

(horn honking)

(horn stops)

( tense theme playing)

(door slams)

Steve. Inspector
Albrecht, Interpol.

Rundown on Pareno
from six European capitals.

Look at that.

Bring him in,
Danno. He lied to me.

( slow, suspenseful
theme playing)

(inaudible dialogue)

Chin Ho here. Patch
me through to McGarrett.

Lied? What do you mean I lied?

You told me that
Dmitri was a good friend.

Twelve years and not a
cross word between you.

You never mentioned the fact

that you put him in a
Paris hospital for a week.

It's true. Four years
ago, I hit him. Once.

I caught him drinking, heavily,
just before the Grand Prix,

when he was supposed
to be checking my car.

Well, he endangered my
life. Naturally, I was upset.

Can you blame me?

Well, Dmitri blamed you.

He filed criminal
charges against you,

and subsequently dropped them.

For what consideration?

No bribe, if that's what
you mean, Mr. McGarrett.

He was sorry it
happened, and so was I.

We became good friends again.

The fact that I
rehired him proves it.

Oh, I assure you,
this was a closed book.

It had absolutely
nothing to do with...

(phone rings)

McGarrett.

Chin, Steve.

We're at the King's
Alley Shopping Mart.

Got a breakthrough.

Yeah, we got Angela. Got a man.

Got something
green in an envelope.

Looks like a payoff.

Guess Pareno will hit the
ceiling when he finds out.

Probably.

You may go, Mr. Pareno.

(door opens)

(engine revving)

Just off the plane.

Beautiful, isn't she?

Fantastic. Ah?

Let's check it out, huh? Okay.

( suspenseful theme playing)

Sixty pounds pressure, check.

(grunts)

Universal joints, tight.

Steering-column linkage, okay.

Niki. Battery
terminals were loose.

Wheel alignment
dialed into half a degree.

Looks good for a starting point.

Brake and gas pedals, even.

A little too much
play in the clutch.

Can you tighten that up?

That enough?

I'll find out on the hill.

(engine revving)

(tires screeching)

( suspenseful theme playing)

( mellow theme playing)

(tires screeching)

What happened?

Decreasing-radius curve.

Nothing stops my father.

CHIN HO: Suspect now
approaching Palm Bungalows.

McGARRETT (on radio): I want
him picked up for questioning, Chin.

I'm sending a backup car.

Don't try to take him
till the car gets there.

Central, McGarrett.

I want a blue-and-white support,

Palm Bungalows, Kuliouou Avenue.

( suspenseful theme playing)

Let's go.

(knocking on door)

CHIN HO: Five-0. Open up!

Police! Open up.

Hold it! Police!

(gunshot)

Back up.

Up against the car, palms first.

What are you
running for, mister?

Hm. Now I know why.

Looks like we got a hot one.

Yeah. 9 mm, European make.

Well...

Officer Masuki. I've taken
$10,000 from that man...

and you're a witness.

Yeah, but 10 grand
is a lot of money.

Did he say why he
got it, or why the gun?

This guy won't talk, Steve.

Five gets you ten he's
been taken by cops before.

Have the H.P.D.
men bring him in.

You stay there with Chin. I
want that place taken apart.

There's a warrant on the way.

( action theme playing)

(both laugh)

What a relief.

Are you surprised
he's in one piece?

( suspenseful theme playing)

CHE: Hair sample on the wrench

matches Dmitri's exactly.

Same with the bone
fragments and epidermal traces.

All match the murder victim's.

What about the blood
type on the wrench?

A-negative.

Dmitri's? A-negative.

This is the murder weapon,
Steve. No question about it.

McGARRETT: Danno, looks
like we misjudged this one badly.

DANNO: What way, Steve?

McGARRETT: At the beginning
of this investigation we said:

"Wild bunch. But murder? No."

Now I say, "Murder, yes."

DANNO: I don't
know. I don't know.

McGARRETT: What's
hanging you up?

DANNO: If I ever saw two
people in love, it's Angela and Alex.

McGARRETT: What do you say, Che?

CHE: Well, I go by the facts.

The facts say murder
one. No question about it.

McGARRETT: I agree.

Angela gives Brill 10 grand.

Murder weapon in Brill's car.

Pick up Angela Sordi, Danno.

Suspicion of conspiracy
to commit murder.

Intended victim: Alex Pareno.

( dramatic theme playing)

McGARRETT: You
went to the bank...

cashed $10,000 in
traveler's checks...

and gave it to Brill.

Yeah, we know his name now.

Chin?

"Frank Brill: con man,
thief. A small-time hood

with records of arrest
in Paris and New York."

All that was on his fingertips.

Why did you give him
the money, Miss Sordi?

Let's try a theory.

Alex changed his will

several months
ago to include you.

You share everything
equally with his son.

It runs into millions.

But Alex is a healthy fellow.

Not much chance
of inheritance there.

It could take ten to 20 years.

But maybe Brill could
help things along.

Maybe he could do something

to Alex's car before the race.

No.

But Dmitri was in the garage.

He caught Brill
tampering with the car.

And Brill had to kill him. No!

But you did meet Brill
the night of the killing.

Niki saw you. He picked
him out of a lineup.

So we know that
Niki is not lying.

Yes, I met Frank. But not
for the reasons you think.

Then why? Why, Miss Sordi?

And why the payoff?

(knocking on door)

(inaudible whispering)

(door closes)

File, please.

(door opens)

I'm Sidney Lefcourt.

I've been retained as
counsel in this matter.

What is Miss Sordi's status now?

She's being held,
pending arraignment.

On what trumped-up charge?

I'd like you to see some
pictures, Mr. Pareno.

They were taken yesterday
at International Market.

The envelope contained $10,000.

The man is Frank Brill, a
known underworld figure...

with record of arrests
on two continents.

And, uh, we found the
murder weapon in his car.

Confirmed by the police lab.

A woman hands
somebody... an envelope.

What does it prove?

Suppose you ask
her what it proves?

From a legal point
of view, I wouldn't...

You stick to your
legal point of view.

What does this mean?

It has nothing to do with you.

You gave this man money.

He killed Dmitri, and you say
it has nothing to do with me...?

No, no, no, you
don't understand.

Well, then what?

ANGELA: For God's sake, he...

He was blackmailing me.

Blackmail?

What about?

Why blackmail?

(exhales)

A long time ago, in Paris...

I had an affair
with Frank Brill.

I knew he was a criminal, but...

it was exciting to me then.

Um...

I didn't know how
evil he was. I...

He, uh... He had
taken some pictures. I...

I didn't know.

He threatened to
send them to you.

Why didn't you tell me?

We would have dealt
with him together.

I was afraid to.

You were still
seeing this man...

while you and I were...?

No. It was over
long before we met.

Then why were
you afraid to tell me?

I... I didn't know
what you'd think.

My... My living with
this man, this criminal.

By then, I loved you so much,

I didn't want
anything to spoil it.

So you prove your
love by not trusting me?

By dealing with
him behind my back?

It was a mistake.

I know that now.

It seems I am the one
who has made a mistake.

Alex.

Don't race.

Some other time, some...
Some other mountain.

Not here, not now.

(chuckles)

After all this...

A-after all this, you expect me
to believe your loving concern?

The performance is over, Angela.

( dramatic theme playing)

He's still in danger, isn't he?

Don't you think it's time

you told me the
truth, Miss Sordi?

All of it?

( suspenseful theme playing)

Joe Demarkie, Kemo
Kono. Mr. Alex Pareno.

Gentlemen. Mr. Pareno.

These, uh, men are
official scrutineers

of the Sports Car
Club of America.

As you know, they'd
be examining your car

under any circumstances
before a race.

But this time there's
a special reason:

two mechanics killed
and a car over the cliff.

So, gentlemen, take
nothing for granted.

Not a bolt, not a
wire, not a plug.

Okay, take her apart.

The car's perfect.

Are you satisfied,
Mr. McGarrett?

Now leave us alone, huh?

With pleasure. Case closed.

All police security
removed as of now. Aloha.

Good luck,
Mr. Pareno. Thank you.

Bye, Mr. Pareno.
Thank you. Goodbye.

Wrap it up.

(engine starts,
tires screeching)

Phew. Well, that's that.

Say, are you hungry? Yeah.

Me too.

(chuckles)

( suspenseful theme playing)

Very clever, Niki.

Bolts loosened.

Then tightened by hand.

They would look
and feel all right, but...

But come apart
under heavy vibrations.

Why, Niki?

Why?

Freeze!

(panting)

(yelling)

(sobbing)

You...

You're the only
one in the world!

And you treat people like dirt!

And you treat my
mother like dirt!

You kicked my mother
out of the house,

and you brought her in.

And you gave her
everything that was ours!

I hope you die on that mountain!

I hope you die!

I'll kill you. I'll kill you.

(sobbing)

I'll kill you!

I'm sorry.

He's gonna need a lot of help.

Anything I can...

(sobs)

The best.

We figure after
he killed Dmitri,

he planted the murder
weapon in Brill's car.

Angela knew how sick he was.

How much he hated you.

But she couldn't
bring herself to tell you.

( somber theme playing)

(car approaches)

(car door closes)

There's no need
for this, Angela.

What happened with Brill...

I forgive you.

But I don't forgive you, Alex.

Goodbye.

(door closes)

(door opens)

(applause)

(engine revving)

Starters, ready?

Ready.

Timers and scorers, ready?

Ready.

Flagmen and
communicators, ready?

Ready.

Zero minus 20 seconds.

Solo, one event.

Hill climb: Tantalus Mountain.

Driver: Alex Pareno.

Existing record: 4
minutes and 26 seconds.

All precautions
taken, McGarrett?

Everything checked?

Everything.

Oh, except for one thing.

looking inside a man's mind.

But my bet:

Alex Pareno will
beat the mountain.

Stand by.

(engine revving)
