Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 3, Episode 19 - F.O.B. Honolulu: Part II - full transcript

U.S. Commander Nicholson now has the perfect counterfeit plates. His price: $2 million and amnesty for all crimes (including the murder of the man he got the plates from). His girlfriend, Nicole Fleming, is playing the Chinese and Soviets off each other before striking a $3 million deal for herself with Wo Fat. McGarrett and Five-O are running out of time to recover the plates.

Souvenir, huh?

Yeah, it's real old.

The fella I bought it from
said maybe 400 or 500 years.

I just wouldn't count
on that if I were you.

You enjoy yourself, corporal.

Thanks.

Next.

Marine corporal, just
returned from Vietnam,

R and R.

Still had his travel orders

and his airplane ticket
stub in his pocket.

Blanks!

They are blanks!

Leo Price came
up with a bright idea

to smuggle something in.

But the plane came from Saigon.

Civilian plane, had
some soldiers on it,

all he had to do
was buy a ticket.

But first, he had to forge
travel orders and dog tags

and get from Macao to Saigon.

He sure went to
a lot of trouble.

Not enough.

Somebody was waiting
for him on this end.

I thought... I knew
he had the plates.

But obviously he
did not, Mr. Madrid.

Where are the
plates, Mr. Madrid?

Precisely!

Gentlemen, 10 weeks
ago another nation

succeeded in creating
a set of perfect plates.

And this time, it's our
currency that's under attack

by the government of Peking.

It's brutally simple.

They'll flood the
international market

with counterfeit $20 bills.

Now, as long as we cannot
identify them as counterfeit,

we have no other
choice but to honor them.

You said that the plates
were stolen in Nanking.

Commander Nicholson has
followed the tortuous path

the plates have
taken since Nanking.

Well, it's, uh, been
a pretty bloody path

all the way across
most of Southeast Asia.

Somehow the plates
reached Macao.

Nine days ago,
Steve. I was there.

Jua Perdeda had the plates,

Leo Price killed him,

and the plates vanished again.

So did Leo Price until today,

and the rest you know.

One million, two-hundred
and fifty thousand.

That's what the
Russians are offering.

Then my government will
pay one million and a half.

We must have those plates.

There's no question about it.

We know they're
due to arrive here.

But we don't know how,
we don't know where,

we don't know when.

But this much we do know:

The bees are all gathering.

Good news?

The news we've been waiting for.

Mikhail Ivanovich Toptegan.

He's known as Misha.

He'll be arriving
representing the Soviet Union.

And Wo Fat, Chinese
People's Republic.

Who was the last
one to have the plates?

She was.

Nicole Fleming.

I suppose there are
arrangements to be made,

personal effects.

Personal effects?

Is that why you came
here, Miss Fleming?

Leo Price had a number
of dubious achievements

in his life, but he
didn't have a sister.

You told us to go over
Leo Price's effects.

I thought it was
a waste of time.

But if that's
counterfeit, it's a beauty.

It appears that I misunderstood

what you told me in Peking

when you denied the
existence of the plates.

Yes, it's...

It's an extraordinary
piece of work.

It's chanced to find
its way into my hands.

I have already notified

the Kremlin of their existence,

so that should satisfy
your first question.

Conceded, the plates exist.

Steve, Farlow cracked the code

and Chin translated
it from Chinese.

We still haven't got
much, though, just a piece,

a couple of word
fragments. Sounds like, um,

Z-I-L-M-A.

Ah, but you're too late.

Whatever it is, I guess
they already took it off.

Who took it off? MAN:
Commander Nicholson,

your Navy intelligence officer.

His launch stopped
us at the breakwater.

You had better talk to
Zagore, the third engineer.

He is the one Commander
Nicholson wanted to see.

Zagore?

That's him.

Nicholson's got the plates.

Looks like he's going
in business for himself.

Every cop in the western world

must be looking
for me right now.

And now, my dear
Misha, you were saying?

I was saying $2 million.

Why, Steve?

I wanna know why.

Nicholson was working
on the case in Macao

when the plates were there.

That's when he must
have gotten the idea.

I know that, Steve,
but I wanna know why!

How do I know
why? Greed, avarice?

All I know is that's where
he met Nicole Fleming.

You were at the
academy with him.

You knew him well.

Why couldn't you have
anticipated it, Steve?

That man was screened
and tested, loyal for years.

And now we discover
he had a price after all.

Heh. A woman.

Are you finished?

No, I am not finished.

Now, he knew he'd be discovered.

He knew we'd comb this island

and close it tight around him.

There was no way for
him to avoid a chase.

Exactly. Exactly.

But he didn't plan it that way.

After Wo Fat found out
how the plates were arriving,

and Nicholson knew that
we would probably crack it too,

he had no choice.

No choice?

Do you realize that if his
plan hadn't been interrupted...?

It would have worked
his way anyway.

And no one would have
known about his part in it.

The president is waiting
for word right now.

Where do we go from here?

I'm gonna press
them hard, all of them.

They don't trust each
other, none of them.

And that can be our
most effective weapon.

Hello. Yes.

Commander Nicholson
on the phone, sir.

This is Jonathan Kay speaking.

Hello, Nicholson.

I'll make this fast, gentlemen.

I have the plates, and
the price is $2 million

and amnesty.

No bargaining, please.

I want a simple yes or no now.

The answer is yes.
$2 million and amnesty.

Amnesty?

When can we have them?

You'll hear from me later.

Yes, Steve, amnesty.

My first duty is to
bring those plates

back to Washington,

and I'll deal with
the devil if I have to.

She just sits there,

doesn't talk to anyone,

like she's waiting for
something to happen.

What about the Russian?

He hasn't been around today.

They must have done
all their talking last night.

You waiting for Ron?

I beg your pardon?

Commander Nicholson, USN.

You remember him, from Macao?

Sorry.

He's running pretty hard now.

But that was supposed
to be your job, wasn't it?

Mr. McGarrett, I
do not have a job.

No, not anymore.

Commander Nicholson
is doing it all by himself.

Amnesty plus $2 million.

You know something?

You'll never see a nickel.

I appreciate your concern.

I really do.

Oh, it's nothing.

Your message said that
it was urgent, Mr. Madrid.

It is.

I know who has the plates.

You do?

And of course,
you would be willing

to share this
knowledge for a price.

You've always been
very fair with me.

My information's
always been reliable.

But not necessarily valuable.

But this time it is.

I'll tell you.

Pay me what it's worth.

It is worth nothing, Mr. Madrid.

I already know

that Commander
Nicholson has the plates.

Tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk.

Poor Mr. Madrid.

Always too little,
always too late.

But you don't know
where the plates are.

You don't know
where Nicholson is.

Do you?

No, but, uh... But I
know... Mr. Madrid,

you must realize
that men of your ilk

are fortunate to survive.

But my patience is not endless.

But you need me.

Most assuredly, sir, I do not.

And I suggest that
you never attempt

to contact me again.

It could prove to
be very painful.

Here you are, sir.

Ah, yes,

there are many
things I shall miss here

after I've gone home.

I'm glad you're
enjoying yourself.

Shouldn't I be?

That depends.

There is a complication.

It seems the Americans
have matched your offer,

2 million plus amnesty

for Commander Nicholson.

Amnesty?

Two million plus 500,000.

Dear Misha,

I knew you would
rise to the challenge.

Dear Nicole,

I now consider
the bidding closed,

and your commitment
a binding one.

Do we understand each other?

You have no right
to do this to me.

You... You have no
right to do this to me.

I wasn't doing anything.

You didn't catch
me doing anything.

Sit down, Mr. Madrid.

I was just watching.
That's all I was doing.

It's a public place.
It's not a crime.

Sit down, Mr. Madrid.

Okay, Chin.

Mr. Madrid, you're a little man.

You're playing a game

that's too big and
too fast for you.

Now, in Macao, you
were on the inside.

All that has changed.

Nobody needs you here.

You're just a small nuisance.

A hurdle in everybody's way.

Look here, McGarrett...
I'm not finished.

Now, they're gonna
run right over you.

I'm surprised they
haven't done it already.

Maybe it won't be as easy
to get rid of me as you think.

Oh? Then they've tried?

Who? Wo Fat?

Now, we know you were in
contact with him in Pinang.

We know he's here in Hawaii.

Where is he, Mr. Madrid?

I have no association
with that man at all.

None.

You mean, not anymore.

All right.

I have a suggestion for you.

Be careful, very careful,

because Wo Fat does not like

to leave loose ends
walking around.

He doesn't need
anything from me at all.

Nothing.

As a matter of fact, he...

I'm told, never mind by whom,

that Wo Fat doesn't need
anything from anybody.

He's, uh, very confident.

Goodbye, Mr. Madrid.

Hello.

Who?

It's for you.

Thank you.

Hello.

Keep an eye on the girl,

I'm going to see if I
can tap the phone.

You have exactly 30 seconds.

It will take no longer.

Three million dollars.
Final offer, Miss Fleming.

I accept.

Good, we'll consider
the bidding concluded.

There will be no
further negotiations

with anyone else.

You do understand
me, Miss Fleming?

I do understand.

You have a firm deal.

And what about
Commander Nicholson?

The commander
will not be a problem.

I promise you that.

Wiki wiki.

Sorry, they just
broke the connection.

Nicole.

Get away from me or I'll scream.

Nicole, please. I'm warning you.

But I have to talk to
you, just for a minute.

All right!

No, no, no!

It's not fair.

It's not fair what you're doing
to me, Nicole. It's not fair.

Bye.

She's in a cab,
Steve, by herself.

Look like she's
heading downtown.

Stay with her, close.

And so your little bird is
trying to fly away, hey?

Well, she's not my
little bird, colonel.

And I'm afraid she's
not yours either.

Well, at least you know
she's not going to meet me.

Oh, I know that, colonel.
I know that for sure.

Oh, you're trying to worry me.

You've got a lot to
be worried about.

Oh, really? Such as?

You were a
stalking-horse, colonel.

She's making the
deal with Wo Fat.

Do you know if I
were in your place,

that's precisely the
kind of thing I would say?

Rocking the boat,
I think you call it.

A rather basic psychological
maneuver, I'm afraid.

Or maybe I'm telling the truth.

Well, you know, I hadn't
actually considered that.

Considering the
lady in question,

I would if I were you.

I'll take the express elevator,

you keep an eye on this one.

Just lookin'.

Shh, shh, shh.

Be quiet, speak slowly,
tell me what happened.

She trapped me.

I was listening
in the other room

on the earphones,

and it sounded
like she went out.

And when I came in here... Yes!

She was waiting for you.

All right, Kono.

Yeah. Put out an APB, right.

And get back to
the hotel just in case.

We're getting down to the wire.

Where do you think she ran?

Before Nicholson was, uh,
crowded into exposing himself,

she was probably gonna
handle the whole deal.

But now that Nicholson
has blown his cover,

he's probably
handling it himself.

She doesn't trust him, Danno,

not with that much
money involved.

Nicholson told Jonathan
Kay he'd make the deal

with our side.

Maybe Nicole is right.

Nicholson will try to deal
with the highest bidder.

No. No, that's her style.

Nicholson has more to gain
from us than anyone else.

Money and amnesty.

Right.

I know him. He's no fool.

Our way is the way
he wants to go now.

It's the only way he
can collect the money

and keep on living.

Well, that's the way
Nicholson wants to go, but...

But I don't think
she'll let him.

Nicholson wants
amnesty, but Miss Fleming

couldn't care less about
anything except money.

Oh, Ron, I'm sorry.

I never meant for
you to have to run.

And I never thought
you'd have to kill that sailor.

If Wo Fat and McGarrett
hadn't found out,

heh, it would have
gone so smoothly.

But we have the
plates, don't we?

Ron, the world is
full of little people.

I want to be somebody.

Listen, from now on,
it's first cabin all the way.

That's if we get there.

Oh, we will. The
hard part is over.

Show me the plate.
I want to see it.

Ooh-whee!

We've got it.
We've really got it.

Uh-huh. Heh-heh.

That's all ours.

And the other?

Safe and sound, just
the way we set it up.

Nothing can stop us.

Yeah, all I have to do now
is contact McGarrett again

and arrange to
collect that $2 million.

Yeah, it'll be a
relief to get it over.

Misha offered two
and a half million,

and then Wo Fat contacted me.

He offered 3.

Nicole, that's not
what we talked about,

what we agreed on before
I went out to the boat.

I'm only telling
you what they said.

That's shopping
around, going for top bid.

I can't afford it
anymore, you know that.

I know, darling. I know.
Look, I need that amnesty.

You don't know
McGarrett like I do.

If I don't get that amnesty,

I'll never get off this rock.

Oh, Ron, don't worry.

That's not gonna be a problem.

Now, we're all set, you and me.

All right, doc. Pull
the sheet back.

That's him.

Ron Nicholson, Navy Cross.

All right, doc, let me have it.

Four shots right to the abdomen,

very close,
small-caliber ammunition.

I can tell you more later.

Soon as you can.

Get the forensic boys out here.

I want them to go over it
with a fine-toothed comb.

Che Fong's gang is standing by.

Steve.

Pearl City, Rentell's
Rent-a-Trailer.

Look at that, Danno.

Women's shoes.

Yeah.

I'll keep them searching.

Maybe we'll come up with
something else we can use.

We won't find the plates.

She's got them.

Tar, fresh tar,
minute gravel content.

Matches the tar we
took from the tire tread

on Nicholson's trailer.

Che, look, there are roads being
resurfaced all over the island.

Can't you do better than that?

Well, that's all I can
get from his clothes.

Still checking the engine,
air filter, carburetor.

Okay.

So he drove somewhere,
and he got out.

Then he drove back to
the beach to meet her.

Think he made a drop?

Makes sense.

You deliver the goods
to Wo Fat in person,

you run the risk of
not walking away.

All right, the highway
division gave us this.

Their crews are
tarring on Highway 90

out by Nanakuli.

And over by Ewa Beach.

There's a new road being
put in at Waipio and 99

about here,

a section of Kahekili
Highway near Kaneohe

about there,

the, um, Waikiki Heights
street expansion program

in that area, and Koko Head,

the area by Kawaihoa Point.

That's it.

Well, that's half of the island.

Well, let's narrow
it down, Danno.

I checked with, uh, Pearl City,

Rentell's Rent-a-Trailer,

Nicholson clocked
just under 59 miles.

We found the car up here.

Thirty-one miles

from the trailer
rental place to Lanikai.

That leaves, uh, 28 miles.

Let's figure half of
that for a radius, 14.

Hold that, Danno.

All right.

That'd be the area.

Well, that leaves out
Nanakuli and Ewa Beach.

And Waipio, which leaves, um,

Kahekili Highway,
Waikiki Heights,

and Koko Head,

but that's stretching it a bit.

We're searching for two
plates the size of a $20 bill

hidden somewhere in that area.

It'd take us weeks to find
them. We've only got hours.

Time is squeezing tight, Danno,

but not only on us.

What do you mean?

Our friend Colonel Toptegan

may be ready to help.

I trust I have not
kept you waiting.

That's all right.
You're paying for it.

I admire directness in a woman.

I gather you had
no particular difficulty

in persuading
Commander Nicholson.

No difficulty at all.

Will he be joining us?

I'm afraid not.

Uh-huh. Then we can begin.

I followed your
instructions carefully.

Have you received notification?

Yes, paid in full,

$3 million deposited
to my Swiss account.

Now for your part
of the bargain.

Miss Fleming,
and the other plate?

The instructions
are in the briefcase.

A detailed map,
I've drawn the route.

Precisely where to go.

You'll find the back
plate waiting for you.

It's been a pleasure,
a real pleasure.

I'm afraid I shall
have to extend

the pleasure of my company

until the other plate is more
securely in my possession.

I never promised
you personal delivery.

That was not our agreement.

Dear lady, I understand
your position completely.

Will you let go of me?

However, I must consider
the other possibility,

that your wish to
take flight at this point

is prompted not by
thoughts of personal safety,

but by thoughts of
still greater wealth.

That's not true. We made a deal.

Come, now.

How am I to know that
you haven't been tempted

to make a similar deal
with one of several bidders?

It's possible.

Another $3 million
for the other plate.

If you don't let
me go, I'll scream.

And bring the police
down upon me,

possibly even Mr. McGarrett?

Do you think that I
would hesitate to kill you

just because this
is a public place?

Look there, Miss Fleming.

And there.

Their instructions are precise.

If you do not accompany me now,

then alone, you will not move

more than five
steps in any direction.

Shall we go?

Lost your appetite, colonel?

Only for the moment,
Mr. McGarrett.

It can be a very
expensive moment

for both of us.

You will forgive me,
but I am not in the mood

for polite conversation today.

It's today or never, colonel.

I don't understand your meaning.

How is the weather this
time of year in Siberia?

I understand your meaning.

All right, Wo Fat
is getting the plates.

Now, if he takes
them back to Peking,

they'll be used, and
that's bad for us, very bad.

But it's gonna be
bad for you too.

And it's gonna be
quicker than you think.

I'm aware of that,
Mr. McGarrett,

painfully aware.

Regardless of the
differences in our systems,

we both wish to retain them.

You've become a
very prosperous nation.

You've got a lot to lose.

Am I correct in assuming

you are making a proposal?

You can't win, but
you don't have to lose.

If you tell me what
you know now,

there may be a
chance for both of us.

Mr. McGarrett, my
position is a delicate one,

one which my superiors in Moscow

must not know about.

They won't. I give you my word.

All right.

Much of the information that
you and I have is the same,

identical information
gathered from different sources.

But we're playing
on my ground now,

and I have the resources to
move and move quickly enough

to block Wo Fat.

If?

If... If you help.

I think I can.

What is this?

If I knew that, Mr. McGarrett,

I should not need your help.

Colonel Toptegan got that
from Nicole Fleming's desk.

Directions?

Probably a map.

Danno, take a look.

This road was just tarred.

By Odowan Temple.

The perfect setting.
How imaginative of you.

I'm delighted that you like it.

It's most fortunate

that you are not still
playing games of deception.

I told you it was here.

You see?

I wasn't so easy to
dispose of after all.

If this is some machination
of yours, Miss Fleming...

It isn't, I swear.

She doesn't tell
the truth very often,

but this time she is.

I'm not here for
her, or for you,

or for anyone except myself.

What do you expect to
accomplish, Mr. Madrid?

You didn't want me. Nobody did.

You all tried to push me out,

but I couldn't let that happen.

You were all so smart,
but I was smarter.

It appears that I
underestimated you,

Mr. Madrid.

I guess we'll have to
make an adjustment

in our arrangements after all.

Now, just put
down the briefcase.

All right.

At last, Mr. Madrid,

you may name your price.

You already made
your deal with her.

Obviously, that
is no longer valid.

Miss Fleming and I will
settle our accounts later.

Right now, let us
discuss your demands.

My demands?

Just put down the briefcase.

Three million dollars.

You don't seriously think
I could trust you now?

Payable however
and wherever you wish.

I'll make my deal
with the Russian.

He respects me.

Listen to the man, Tony.

He can make you rich.

Don't you try and
tell me what to do.

Tony, take me with you.

Don't leave me here with him.

Please.

How long do you
think you would survive

with her as your
faithful companion?

He's right.

Tony, he'll kill me.

All right, you can come
with me as far as the city.

After that, you're on your own.

Hold it!

Hold it!

McGARRETT: Freeze.
A million dollars.

It's worth a million to you.

It's worth Murder One.

Book her.

You want Wo Fat?

Madrid shot him. He's in there.

Let's go, Danno.

Must be hit badly.

Yeah. Yeah, that makes
him even more dangerous.

Danno, I want an
APB out on Wo Fat,

roadblocks at every
intersection within a mile,

double the airport
and harbor watch.

Get H.P.D. out here,

search every foot of this place,

seal this rock.

McGARRETT: Colonel.

Tell me, do you come
down to the airport

to say farewell to
all visitors to Hawaii?

Only some, but all
colonels from the KGB.

Ah... I know,

it's purely an honorary title.

The plates?

Safely in Washington.

Ah. And Wo Fat?

Oh, who knows?
Probably in Peking.

Then everything is
precisely as it should be.

Well, Mr. McGarrett,

a pleasure.

Truly a pleasure.

Do svidaniya.
