Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 12, Episode 11 - Labyrinth - full transcript

A plastic surgeon's wife is kidnapped, and against his wishes Five-O is brought in to help find her. McGarrett and Kimo are puzzled by the doctor's apparent lack of concern for his wife, and Five-O's investigation of their relationship turns up some equally disturbing facts -- such as how her face was completely different when they lived on the mainland.

Time to turn out the lights.

I'm gonna ask you one question.

You're gonna answer in one word.

Do you have the million dollars?

Yes.

Doctor, the plain truth is
that there is no guarantee

you'll get your wife back alive
even if you pay the ransom.

This will all be over
for you in a while.

Believe me, try it for a
couple of weeks, Mrs. Ames.

Your hair will have more
body and be more manageable.

You have Georgio's word on it.

Oh, he's right, Mrs.
Ames. It works like a charm.

I mean, look at my hair
and I use this stuff every day.

Marvelous.

~ Something wrong? ~ Don't
you like the new nail polish?

It's your regular styling.

It's... It is you.

Is it?

If you're unhappy with the styling,
Mrs. Ames, I can very easily~~

Oh, no. Georgio,
that's all right.

The hair's fine,
the nails are fine.

I'm sorry.

~ Where to, madam?
~ Just home, Wilkens.

All finished, then, are
we? Very pretty indeed.

Wilkens, this isn't
the way home, is it?

No, madam, it's, um, a shortcut.

~ A shortcut? ~ Yes, madam.

All right.

Well, now what?

It's the engine, madam.

Hissing rather badly.

I'd better stop and check it.

Wilkens.

Time to turn out the lights,

madam.

I assure you, Mr.~~
McGARRETT: McGarrett.

McGarrett, right.

I don't need your help.

In fact, I don't know where
you got the ridiculous idea

that I might need someone.

Christine's on the mainland,
visiting some old friends.

Yeah, and I'm the
queen of the May.

You're also insolent.

~ Okay, let's go, Kimo. ~
No, hold it, Steve, please.

Now, Ken...

~...I asked Mr. McGarrett
to come. ~ You what?

Now, look, Ken,
Christine's life is in jeopardy.

I think we need all
the help we can get.

It's precisely because
she's in jeopardy

that I wanted to avoid
police intervention.

The kidnapper
specifically demanded that.

How could you do this
without consulting me first?

Doctor, the plain truth is
that there is no guarantee

you'll get your wife back alive
even if you pay the ransom.

Don't you understand that?

I know that, but I'm not gonna
lower her chances with your meddling.

Ken, he is not meddling.

He is a police officer
trying to do a job.

You have my word, doctor,

that your wife's safety
is our top priority.

Now, we will do
everything in our power

to bring her back
alive and well.

All right, but nothing
tricky, you understand?

~ Tricky? KEN: Yes, tricky.

We're gonna play it
by their rules, not yours.

I only hope your presence here
hasn't already cost her her life.

How much time did they give you?

It wasn't clear.

They just said to have a
million dollars in small bills

by the next time they call.

It could be any time.

The phones are set, Steve.

McGARRETT: Oh, thanks, Kimo.

Anything on that court order
to search the chauffeur's room?

Yeah, Duke's working on
that. He's running a full check.

Oh, that chauffeur guy was British,
so we had to call in Scotland Yard.

McGARRETT: Good, good.

And we got an APB out on
Ames' limo, nothing so far.

Have Duke look into Ames'
background and his wife's.

It may be helpful.

Oh, Kimo, one more thing.

Ask Lori to call on this
hairdresser, Georgio.

See what she can find out.

Ames said that his wife
called home from there

just before she disappeared.

It was the last place
we know she was seen.

You got it.

What's going on in there?

Have you found anything yet?

No, not yet, doctor,
but we're working on it.

Working?

Ken, please try to relax.

Relax? They threatened to kill my wife
unless I come up with a million dollars.

That is not very
conducive to relaxation.

Can you raise
that kind of money?

Not easily.

Plastic surgeons
make good money.

I've saved mine.

But coming up with that kind
of ransom is a little beyond me.

Christine has it, though.

You and your wife keep your money
separate from each other, doctor?

She wanted it that way.

Is that so unusual?

McGARRETT: Oh, I don't know.

But if that's the case,
how do you propose

to pay the kidnappers a
million if it's not yours to give?

That's why I'm here, Steve.
I've already signed the papers.

Christine gave me
power of attorney

just in case anything
should ever happen to her.

Oh? Should happen like what?

Like a kidnapping, for instance?

Well...

Like a kidnapping.

Just what are you
getting at, McGarrett?

I'm not getting at anything,
doctor. Please, take it easy, will you?

When you spoke to the
kidnapper on the phone,

did you notice anything
distinctive about his voice?

Anything unusual?

No, it was a voice, a man.

It could have been anybody.

Could it have been
your chauffeur?

No, Wilkens speaks
with an English accent.

Yes.

This is Dr. Ames.

Thank God.

Was it Christine?

No, the money,

it's on the way.

Don't you go running off, ducks.

Mr. Ramsey? Mr. Georgio Ramsey?

I know you think
you're special, dear,

but all appointments are
made up front with Cathy.

I'm with Five~0. Do you think
we could talk for a few minutes?

Oh, my goodness,
you are special. Sure.

Mrs. Ames is a beautiful
woman, believe it.

And money, whew,

but what an absolute
dog to work on.

Heh. She's not a happy woman.

~ Did she come here often?
~ Every Tuesday, 11:30 a.m.

She has a standing appointment.

Her hair and a manicure.

It's always the same.

Heh. Not very
imaginative, is it?

Red Door Red.

~ What? ~ The color
of her new nail polish.

~ Gloria? ~ What?

Get lost.

Just trying to help.

Now, if she had an appointment
every week at the same time,

the kidnappers
knew her schedule.

They'd know when
and where to grab her.

I'll tell you one
thing, Miss Five~0.

She didn't trust her husband.

How do you know that?

Ha, ha. Come out to the
reception. I'll show you something.

All right.

This has not been easy on Ken.
Usually, he's a very easygoing guy.

If anything, it's Christine
who's the difficult one.

~ She seems very bitter. ~ Why?

I'm only their lawyer,
Mr. Carew, not their psychiatrist.

Do you know why they moved away?

They'd had a run of bad luck.

They just decided to come
over here and start over again,

you know, give it another go.

What kind of bad luck
are we talking about?

Christine's health.

I understand she was in a
terrible automobile accident

about a year and a half ago,

and to be honest, they have
had some marital problems.

It would be very helpful if
you could be more specific.

What kind of problems?

I really don't wanna talk
about those things, Mr. Carew.

It's not my business.

Besides, I think you can see how
much Mr. Ames is upset by all of this.

Look, Mr. Di Marco, this really
isn't the time to withhold evidence.

We need your help
and we need it now.

You know, it doesn't take very
long for a kidnapper's trail to get cold.

Mr. Carew, I can assure you,
if I knew more, I'd tell you more.

But Ken and Christine speak
very little about their past.

She's especially
sensitive about it.

Mr. Carew, you
have a radio call.

~ Excuse me. ~ Sure.

~ Carew. ~ This is Duke.

Yeah, Duke.

We found the chauffeur
and the limousine.

~ By the Diamond Head
Crater road. ~ I'm on my way.

I'm sorry. I'm really sorry,
but that's all I remember.

It all happened so fast. It
was like lightning, really.

Before I realized
what was happening,

they were alongside
of us banging the car,

trying to run us off the road.

Her ladyship's in the backseat
screaming her bleeding her head off.

Car must look a right royal
mess with all that banging about.

So you just drove
it into the ditch?

Drove it?

It was out of control, mate.

Well, I panicked a little.

Anyway, I passed out when I
hit that bleeding tree down there.

Well, you know the rest.

Ooh, my head's beating like
the inside of a bleeding steel mill.

And you said there were
two of them? Two men?

Yeah, that's right.

Can you describe them for me?

Oh, I'm sorry, inspector, I've
already told your friend here.

They were wearing those knit masks.
You know, like they wear for skiing.

I'll tell you something,
though, they were mean.

A couple of animals
if you ask me.

Hey, what about the car?

~ What about it? ~
What did it look like?

Blue.

No, bluey~green, you know, a
big car. Must have been American.

Ooh, I could kick myself for not
getting the license plate number.

Hey, I know what
you're thinking.

"Here's this chauffeur who
can't tell you the type of car it was

that nearly creamed
him off the highway."

And that sounds pretty strange.

Well, all I can tell you
is it happened so fast

that I was desperately
trying to save my life,

which, lucky for me, I did.

Thanks for your
help, Mr. Wilkens.

You can rely on me.

Horrible business, that
kidnapping the missus like that.

And I hope you catch
those thugs that done it.

What do you think, Kimo?

Well, I think he talks
a lot and says nothing.

There's something
screwy here, Duke.

This guy's a professional
driver, cars are his business.

He should have given
us more on that other car.

There's not much to go on.

Ah, but it's all we've got.

Look, put out an APB on
those two guys he described

~ and the vehicle they
were driving. ~ Right.

Duke.

Don't let that Wilkens
guy out of your sight.

I want a 24~hour tail on him.

If he sneezes in the
middle of the night,

I wanna know about it, okay?

Kimo.

Hi, Lori. What do you got?

I'm not sure. It's a long shot,
but I think I'm onto something.

According to gorgeous
Georgio, the hairdresser,

Mrs. Ames was pretty
jealous of her husband.

It seems their marriage
was on pretty shaky ground.

Yeah, I think that's what Di
Marco was trying to tell me.

Did he also try to tell you that
Mrs. Ames hired a detective

when they got to Hawaii
to follow her husband?

She was convinced he was
having an affair with another woman.

~ This detective got
a name? ~ Of course.

About six months ago,

somebody was dipping
into the till at Georgio's shop.

He couldn't figure out which
one of his help was doing it.

He happened to
mention it to Mrs. Ames

and she gave him this.

"Modest fee, call
me." Is he serious?

Seems to be, he's listed as
a retired sergeant at H.P.D.

~ Anybody talk to him?
~ Yeah, I gave him a call

and I got a recording.

He said he's at his downtown
office at 1246 Hopaco.

~ And...? ~ Ha, ha.

It's a pool hall.

You're a regular Sam Spade, huh?

Well, I guess I'd better go
talk to him down at his office,

and I just might have a few
questions for our friend Ames.

~ You think he's in on
it too? ~ I don't know.

Anything's possible.

~ A ball down. ~ So
you ran 50 balls, big deal.

That dizzy broad
got snatched, huh?

You'll pardon me if I don't get
all unstrung about that news.

As a matter of fact, even
if it's true, I still don't care.

I'm not asking you to care,
I'm asking you for information.

Think you can handle it?

I got 140 IQ, pal. Heh.

Who'd have thought Five~0 would
come to Nick Rossiter for help?

Hey, tell me, Carew, are you
sure she was kidnapped? Hmm?

What's that supposed to mean?

Oh, no doubt she's missing,
otherwise you wouldn't be here now,

but are you sure
somebody else did it?

Didn't Mrs. Ames hire
you to follow her husband?

Yeah, she hired me.

A bonanza for me
too, believe me,

because this broad
had money to burn.

This wasn't gonna be one of those
hundred~dollar, "I'll take his picture,

she takes him to
court" jobs. Oh, no.

This broad was loaded, she was
angry, she was gonna roast her old man,

and she didn't care how
much it cost her to do it.

Frankly, pal, she was a nutcase.

Do you remember
what she told you?

Do I look like a dummy?

Of course I remember
what she told me.

You want the story? Okay.

But you stop me
if you've heard it.

One, her old man is fooling
around with another broad.

Two, she's got no proof,

so, three, she hires me to
find out who the other woman is.

So I did, I found out.

Well, all right, who was it?

It was her.

Her who?

Don't you get it? It's wild.

They found a new way for rich
people to make you look like an idiot.

This broad hired
me to find herself.

Well, I don't know
why, Mr. Rossiter,

but I find that just a
little hard to believe.

You believe that? There
was no other woman.

I could've killed her when I
found out what her game was.

Listen, Carew, Nick Rossiter
may not be the smartest guy

and he may not hang around
with the best bunch of people,

but he ain't nobody's fool.

The next time I saw that broad,

I told her what she could do
with her money and her old man.

And I ain't seen her since
because she's a fruitcake.

Are you sure that
it was Mrs. Ames

and not somebody
that just looked like her?

How close did you get to her?

I used binoculars, Carew.

No question
about it, it was her.

Now, listen, Mrs. Ames hired me

because her husband was
having an affair with Mrs. Ames.

Now, that's a double
whammy, ain't it?

Oh, we're awake, are we?

Well, I can't talk to you now.

Business before pleasure.

First we have to make
our little phone call.

Yes?

MAN: Ames, is that you?

Yes, what do you want?

Just keep your mouth shut.

I'm not giving you
time to trace this call.

I have a gun pointed at
your wife's temple right now.

I'm gonna ask you one question
and you're gonna answer in one word.

If you say one more
word, your wife is dead.

If the cops are
involved, she's dead.

If there's any foul~up dropping
off the money, she's dead.

Do you have the million dollars?

~ Yes. ~ Outside
behind the cypress vines,

in the garden, there's a box.
You'll find detailed instructions.

You have 45 minutes.

Relax, Mrs. Ames.

This will all be over
for you in a little while.

How much time?

About 40 minutes.

About?

About?

Ken, McGarrett is
sending someone over.

Good, that's very helpful.

Ken, I really don't think
you should go alone.

~ Now, maybe McGarrett
can~~ ~ I am going alone.

There will be no police interference.
Do you understand that, Dave?

You're my lawyer. You
make that clear to McGarrett.

No interference.

I won't have my wife's
murder on my conscience.

All right.

Where's Ames?

Come on, Di Marco, the
officer monitoring the phone

just called and said the
ransom demand came in.

~ Now, where is he? ~
You're too late, Mr. Carew.

He's already left
to make the drop.

Where's Dr. Ames?

He's making the drop. Have
you got anything helpful, Lori?

Helpful maybe, certainly
interesting. Take a look at this.

It's an enlarged photocopy of
Mrs. Ames' Texas driver's license.

It's a little grainy, but you
can still see her picture.

This is Mrs. Ames? LORI: Right.

Well, who is that?

You tell me.

Look, these are two
entirely different women.

Right.

Mr. Di Marco, can you
shed any light on this?

Well, I don't
know. Is it a fake?

No, it's not a fake.

That's what Mrs. Ames used
to look like back in Texas.

Dr. Ames is a plastic
surgeon, isn't he?

Are you trying to
tell me he did this?

Oh, the accident.

I knew she'd been injured badly,
but I'd never imagined that~~

Really, what is the
story on the accident?

A little more than a
year ago, on a highway

between Fort Worth and Dallas,

Dr. Ames and his wife
were on their way home.

It was raining.

He apparently hit a slippery
section, the car went out of control

and swerved off the
highway at a very high speed.

Dr. Ames escaped
with minor injuries.

And Mrs. Ames?

Not so lucky.

She sustained
severe facial damage,

burns, broken bones and
serious internal injuries.

The woman nearly died.

And so the good doctor put
her all back together again.

There was one major difference.

He'd given her a new face.

Well...

Look out, darling,
I'm soaking wet.

I was worried.

Well, you worry too much.
Everything's going just like we planned.

Did you take care of her?

Yes, now relax.

You're gonna give yourself a heart
attack and then what would we do?

How would we spend
all that lovely money?

I don't care about the money.
You know that. It's all for you.

I know, darling.
You're wonderful.

How did Larry handle the police?

I haven't seen him yet.

He's under medical
observation at the hospital.

Oh, they're watching him too.

I don't trust him, Lisa.
He's so damned insolent.

Oh, Kenny, come
on, don't be silly.

He's a good boy.

I don't like him.

McGarrett's already suspicious.

He's not an ordinary cop.

They're all ordinary,
otherwise they wouldn't be cops.

~ What about Di Marco?
~ What about Di Marco?

Well, won't he recognize you?

Kenny, sweetheart.

How many times
has he seen Christine

since she's been here?
Twice, three times?

She's practically a recluse.

Outside of going to have
her hair done once a week,

who does she see?
Where does she go?

Don't worry about Di Marco.

But your voice, he'll know.

Now, Kenny, you
have just been worrying

and worrying about this thing,
and I have told you not to worry so.

Still worried?

Darling, look,

very soon, this is
all going to be over.

No more police, no more Christine,
just you and me and the world.

Darling, you've
got to be strong.

There's no time
for second thoughts.

You can't pull Christine
from the burning car now.

It's done.

I know. I forgot.

You're right.

Are you all right?

Are we having a luau?

You should have told me,
Mr. Carew, I'd have roasted a pig.

That is too bad, I could use a
little roast pig right about now.

What happened out there, Ames?

It all happened very
quickly. I only saw one man.

His features weren't visible.

He was wearing one of
those scuba~diving outfits.

His body was underwater.

Then how do you
know it was a man?

Perhaps it was a woman.

Well, he spoke.

He asked me to throw
him the money bag.

Then what?

I did as he asked.

I threw him the bag.

He

Took it.

That's it.

And when it was over,
I turned the boat around

and came back here.

And we're right
glad to see you, sir.

But did the man say
anything about Christine, Ken?

No, I~~

I already told you
everything I know.

You seem very nervous, doctor.
Perhaps you should sit down.

I'll be all right.

Help me.

Help me.

Hey, you all right, lady?

Get me to the police.

It was horrible.

Him.

Wilkens.

I screamed for him to help me,

but he didn't respond.

He was unconscious.

They pulled me from the car.

How many were there, Mrs. Ames?

I only saw two of them.

But they had guns.

One of them

put a handkerchief
over my mouth.

I must have passed
out a moment later.

I don't remember anything,

until I woke up
near the highway.

I have no idea how
I got there or when.

You were unconscious
the whole time?

Look at her arm.

They must have been giving
her injections to keep her out.

She's lucky they
didn't kill her.

I don't care what it takes

or what the cost.

I want the men
who did this to me.

Do you understand,
Mr. McGarrett?

If it takes a reward, you'll
have it. Just ask the sum.

But I can't just let
them get away with this.

That goes for me as well.

I know I've been very difficult,
but you can count on me

to do everything in my power
to assist you from here on out.

Very well, doctor, I'll keep
that in mind. Thank you.

Well, at least Christine
is home safe again.

Are you all right?

Oh, yes, I'm just a
little tired, that's all.

Of course.

We can continue this
tomorrow, McGarrett.

Excuse me, just one more thing.

Can you tell me anything about
a man named Nick Rossiter?

Get some water.

Christine,

are you all right?

McGarrett,

your questions
will have to wait.

Very well.

Let's go.

Ken, I'll talk to you later.

Hold it a second.

Mrs. Ames is up to something.

There's more than a simple
kidnapping going on here.

It's just too cute,
especially that fainting spell

when I asked
about Nick Rossiter.

We'll talk about it when
we get back to the office.

They've gone.

We did it. We pulled it off.

I guess we have.

Well, let's celebrate, eh?

A little toast to our future.

Mm, by all means, a toast.

Doctor. KEN: Mm~hm.

And Mrs. Ames.

May they be right
happy with each other.

Why was McGarrett
asking about Nick Rossiter?

Who's Nick Rossiter?

I don't know. Does
it make a difference?

It makes a lot of difference.
McGarrett wouldn't have asked

if it wasn't important.

Lisa... What's the matter?

I feel...

Go on down. I'll be
there in a minute.

You're double~crossing me.

You poisoned me.

I'm just not a very
good wife, am I?

McGARRETT: Wake up, doctor.

Wake up.

Dr. Ames?

~ What happened? ~
Why don't you tell us?

~ Where are they?
~ Where are who?

Wilkens and...

My wife.

They drugged me.

Why would they wanna do that?

Oh, my God, she
ran off with him.

With Wilkens.

She had everything.
She threw it away.

For him.

This is great fun. I ain't
never driven a boat before.

Well, you're doing
marvelously, darling.

You know, you're
beautiful, Lisa.

You really had me going for a
minute when you first came back.

I thought, "Oh, my God,
Christine has got herself loose,

and that's the end of
poor old Larry boy now."

You know, I think we're almost
there. I'd better go change.

I don't see anything but water.

How can you tell we're
nearing the money?

How can you tell
we're nearing anything?

Oh, trust me, darling, I know.

Hey, Lisa, I hope you
speak some Portuguese.

That's what they speak in
Brazil, you know, not Spanish.

I wonder if this is how
Lord Nelson got his start.

Lisa, look here. First
lord of the Admiralty.

Lisa.

McGARRETT: She's dead.

Oh, no.

It was your boat
we were following.

We had it on the radar
screen when it happened.

She's dead.

Both of them are dead.

Wilkens and Christine,
they're both dead.

~ Christine? ~ Yes,
she was with him.

They left together.

No, not Christine, doctor.

Somebody else.

I don't know what
you're talking about.

Why would your wife,
Christine, go to all this trouble

just to run off with
your chauffeur?

I don't know. She
was in love with him.

They were having an affair?

Don't you think it's time
we stopped playing games

with each other, doctor?

It's no secret that your
marriage was in serious trouble.

You wanted to be with your
girlfriend, but your wife, Christine,

refused to give you
a divorce, didn't she?

So she had an accident,

or should I say an accident
was arranged for her?

But she didn't die,
she was disfigured.

That was over a year ago.

This is outrageous. I
never tried to kill her.

I was the one who
pulled her from that car.

Your lawyer, Di Marco, called you the
dean of plastic surgeons on this island.

Was it your idea to give your wife
the same face as your girlfriend's?

That is insane.

So was that kidnapping,
doctor, and it might have worked.

Kidnap the real Mrs. Ames

and replace her with
her double, your girlfriend.

Now, no one would be the
wiser, particularly here in Hawaii,

away from all of Christine's
friends and family on the mainland.

That's crazy, you don't know
what you're talking about.

McGARRETT: Oh, I think I do.

It all went well, except
for one ironic twist.

Your girlfriend, Lisa, had
something else planned.

She double~crossed you.

Kimo, may I see that, please?

You're gonna love this, Ames.

McGARRETT: You
recognize it, huh?

We found it beside you while
you were still unconscious.

I'm sorry, Kenny.

You knew it all along,
didn't you, that I loved Larry?

So this was the only way.

Oh, Lisa, Lisa.

I couldn't do it. I couldn't
go on playing your wife

and I couldn't kill Christine.

I knew you wanted
me to, but, uh, heh,

murder just isn't my thing.

Anyway, she's alive,
just as we left her.

Why don't you look
at it this way, Kenny?

At least they won't be
trying you for murder.

Heh, heh. So I'll write you from
Rio, and, uh, thanks a million.

She's alive?

~ Christine is alive? ~ Yeah.

And I think you'd better
tell us where she is.

Mrs. Ames.

Duke, what have you got?

I have the bottle,
Steve. Chloroform.

~ Okay, mark it for evidence, Duke.
- Right.

All right, gentlemen.

Well, you can relax
now. It's all over.

Wilkens and that woman,
they almost killed me.

You'll forgive me, Mr. McGarrett,
but I'm not sorry they're both dead.

I understand.

You know, Mrs. Ames, there's one piece
of this puzzle that still doesn't fit.

The explosion on the boat,
we have reason to believe

that it was not an accident.

You think my husband's
responsible for that too?

Oh, no, Mr. McGarrett,

he couldn't be that jealous of Wilkens
that he would murder them both.

No, Dr. Ames didn't do it.

He may have suspected Lisa and
Wilkens would double~cross him,

but he didn't know for
sure until it was too late.

Then who?

Remember Nick Rossiter?

Nick Rossiter was a detective
that I hired for something personal.

Not really.

He's a detective
that Christine hired.

And you're not
Christine, you're Lisa.

You killed Christine
and Wilkens, didn't you?

With Wilkens and Christine out of
the way and Dr. Ames going to prison,

you figured you could come
back as Christine and keep it all.

Pretty clever.

With Christine's fortune, you
could have left Hawaii tomorrow

and never see Dr. Ames
or any of us again.

Am I right, Lisa?

That's all conjecture,
Mr. McGarrett.

Not conjecture, we
have the evidence.

Do you know what
Red Door Red is?

No.

McGARRETT: It's nail polish,

applied at Georgio's
salon while Mrs. Ames,

the real Mrs. Ames,
Christine Ames,

had her hair and her nails done
every week, always with clear polish,

always, with the
exception of this week.

This week, she tried
a color, Red Door Red.

If you were Christine,
your nails would be

Red Door Red.

But they're not.

Okay, Kimo, book her.

Murder one.
