Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 11, Episode 11 - The Miracle Man - full transcript

A distraught man comes on stage during a live TV broadcast by a charismatic preacher and shoves an unloaded gun in his face, demanding the preacher account for the death of the assailant's wife, who was a member of his congregation. When Five-O investigates, they find the charges may be well-founded and the preacher may be heading a cult of brainwashed people to get at their assets.

Do you believe that Christ Jesus

brought his body out of the
tomb after the crucifixion?

What has this got to
do with the reverend?

He's a fake, a liar.

Worst of all, he's a Rasputin.

He mesmerizes people.
They'll do anything for him.

I believe in miracles.

I believe in miracles.

Reverend, what, uh,
seminary did you attend?

I guess you could say I graduated
from the University of the Streets,

with a master's degree in
what Americans call hustle.

Do you believe in miracles?

I do.

Do you believe that Christ Jesus

brought his body out of the
tomb after the crucifixion?

I do.

Do you believe he
walked upon the waters?

I do.

Oh, yes,

I believe in miracles.

Now, come on, let
me hear you say it.

I believe in miracles.

I believe in miracles.

And again.

I believe in miracles.

Do you really believe it?

Yes!

God bless you all.

Thank you. Sister Harmony.

Sowing in the morning

Sowing seeds of kindness

Sowing in the noontide
And the dewy eve

So that's the
Reverend Andy, huh?

The miracle man.

Oh, he's quite a story, Steve.

He started preaching in a
pub in Manchester, England.

And now, he's an
international celebrity,

and one of the most successful
evangelists on the Mainland.

You know, it's really quite
an honor for us that he's here.

And this is his first
trip to the Islands.

From the looks of that crowd,
I'd say he came to the right place.

We will come rejoicing
Bringing in the sheaves

Angels.

Angels. That's a
heavenly sound, Sisters.

Sister Sarah.

Sister Harmony.

Sister Ruth.

And the Miracle Crusade Choir.

Bravo! Bravo!

Come hold me,

brothers and sisters.

Oh, come hold me.

And let me share your light.

Sowing in the morning

Sowing seeds of kindness

I believe, brother. I believe.

God bless you, brother.

God bless you, brother.

He's a fake and a liar.

Don't listen to him!

Tell them what
happened to my wife.

Make him tell you what
happened to my wife.

He's a fake! He's a fake!

A phony! A phony!

Steve, get over...
He's a phony! He's a...

Steve.

- Glad I caught you.
- Yeah.

- That's one angry mob out there.
- So I noticed. What is it?

You saw what happened on TV?

Yeah, I saw it. So did the
governor and the rest of the world.

Steve, the gun wasn't loaded.

- Wasn't loaded?
- We're sure it's the right gun.

- He's got his fingerprints all over it.
- Who else knew about this?

Just the arresting officers.

Can we keep it that way for now?

- Sure.
- Something's not right here, Ed.

I don't know what it is. No matter
how deranged a man becomes,

no matter what his
emotional state is,

why would he publicly threaten
to kill a man with an empty gun?

Why?

Because I had no
intention of killing him.

It was just a way
to get attention.

McGARRETT: I'd
say you succeeded.

I tried every other way, but
no one would listen to me.

You're lucky one of the
security men didn't shoot you.

They had no way of
knowing your gun was empty.

I had to take the chance.

It was the only way I knew

and to prove I didn't
mean to kill him.

Would you, the head
of the state police force,

be here now if the
gun had been loaded?

Okay. I see your point.

You're from the San
Diego area, aren't you?

Yes.

What did happen to your wife?

My Marian.

She's dead.

She came tearing down

a winding hill and slammed her
car, head-on, into the telephone pole.

There was no skid marks.

She didn't even try to stop.

What has this got to
do with the reverend?

It Was because of
him, Mr. McGarrett.

He's a fake, a liar.

Worst of all, he's a Rasputin.

He mesmerizes people.
They'll do anything for him.

No one will listen.

Or help me.

Will you help me, Mr. McGarrett?

Will you be the one?

Yeah. Yeah, I'll help you.

Maybe.

If you start at the beginning
and never lie to me.

Marian and I,

we missed out
on a lot of things.

We couldn't have children.

She blamed herself.

When the Reverend Andy
first came to San Diego,

she went to the service.

He said, if you believe,
miracles can happen.

She wanted one bad.

You obviously didn't share
your wife's faith in this man, huh?

At first I tried, but...

Anyway, she joined his church.

Tabernacle of
Miracles, he called it.

She was obsessed with the idea

that a miracle was
going to happen.

When the Crusade came to town
again six months ago, I lost her.

She spent all her
time with those people.

Finally, she said she was
leaving me to follow him.

She even gave him all
of our savings, $12,000.

The night she
went to be with him

was the night she died.

Did you tell all this to
the San Diego police?

I tried.

They wouldn't listen to me.

McGARRETT: How do you
know that she gave him $12,000?

The savings and loan showed
me their cancelled cashier's check

made out to the Miracle Crusade.

Do you believe
me, Mr. McGarrett?

McGARRETT: At this point,
I don't know what to believe.

- Will you at least check out my story?
- Yeah, heh.

That you can bet on.

But we all saw it on TV.

It's an open and shut case.

But it isn't, Danno.

That gun wasn't loaded.

Then that guy Nelson
has to be crazy.

He could've gotten
his head blown off.

You see somebody coming
with a gun, you figure it's loaded.

My sentiments exactly,
until I heard Nelson's story.

Now, why would a man
do such a reckless thing

like pulling an empty gun,

unless his story is true.

Hmm.

It still sounds crazy.

- Anyway, what's next?
- We're gonna check his story.

Quietly, Danno.

Duke, see what you
can dig up on our friend

the Reverend Andy
and his Miracle Crusade.

I'll get right on it.

Mr. McGarrett, the
governor on line five.

McGARRETT: Oh, thank you, Luana.

Yes, Governor?

GOVERNOR: How's it coming?

I talked to Nelson.
He tells quite a story.

Don't they all?

Listen, I'm, uh...

Well, I'm really very
concerned that this be handled

very judiciously, if
you know what I mean.

Governor, may I
tell you that Nelson

made some allegations
about the reverend

that aren't exactly flattering.

I'll have to check them out.

Oh, now wait a minute, Steve.

Sir, if I may
interrupt, you know

and I know that the
Constitution says

Nelson's entitled to
the same protection

and due process of
law as the reverend is.

Now, as long as you
keep me in this job,

I'll have to run
it as I see fit, sir.

Well, you're right, of course, but
it's just that we all saw it on TV.

But we both know that things are
not always as they appear to be.

Okay, Steve.

I know you'll do it
your way, anyway.

- You have my blessings.
- Thank you, sir.

By the way, I, uh... I got a call from
Reverend Andy's business manager,

Oscar Ross. The reverend
would feel a lot better

if he had a few more
policemen at his services

for the rest of his stay
in the Islands. Okay?

Very well, Governor.
We'll take care of that.

The reverend wants
to see some cops.

What do you say we give him a
look at two of Honolulu's finest?

Quite right, Steve. Quite right.

What a friend we have in Jesus

All our sins and grieves to bear

What a privilege to carry

Everything to god in prayer

Is this a religious
service or a stage show?

I think it's a little
of both, Danno.

Sad but true.

Oscar Ross.

I'm Reverend Andy's
business manager.

McGarrett, Hawaii Five-0.
My associate, Dan Williams.

- How do you do?
- We have questions

for the reverend
if it's convenient.

Certainly. Let's, uh, wait
for him in his quiet room.

Danno, nose around here.
See what you can pick up.

I especially want to know if
anyone knew Marian Nelson.

Right.

Sit down, Mr. McGarrett. Reverend
Andy will be with us in a moment.

McGARRETT: Thank you.

What kind of questions did
you have for Reverend Andy?

Oh, just routine. Part
of the investigation.

What is there to investigate?

The man tried to kill Reverend
Andy. Millions of people saw him.

Well, it's not
quite that simple.

I don't understand.

Why don't we just
wait for the reverend?

Sisters. Sisters.

Excuse me. Uh, I'd like
to ask you a few questions.

Reverend Andy,
this is Mr. McGarrett.

Reverend.

Mr. McGarrett.

Mr. McGarrett is a policeman.
He has some questions.

Here you are, Reverend.

Drink it all up this time.

- Mr. McGarrett, Sister Harmony.
- Sister.

She has, as you can see,
a strong maternal instinct.

- Protein drink.
- Ha, ha.

With lots of your smashing
pineapple juice in it, heh.

You'd like some explanation
for that poor soul's wanton act.

So would I.

Thank you, Sister.

How can I be of help?

Did you know his
wife, Marian Nelson?

I knew of her.

I heard of her
unfortunate accident,

but I never had the
pleasure of meeting her,

but I understand she
had joined our church.

Mr. Nelson said she went
to see you that last night.

Heh, I wish she had.

She might still be with us.

I don't suppose you know
anything about the large contribution

she made to your
Miracle Crusade?

Brother Oscar?

We're blessed with a
great many contributions.

But probably not too many
cashier's checks for $12,000, right?

I'll find out.

Even if she had
given the contribution,

what has that to do with
Nelson's attack on Reverend Andy?

McGARRETT: I don't
know, Mr. Ross. I don't know.

That's what I'm trying
to find out, ahem.

Uh, just one more
question, Reverend.

What, uh, seminary
did you attend?

Mr. McGarrett, let me
save you some trouble.

My calling came
when I was in jail.

I was born Andrew Norwood,
outside Manchester in England.

I guess you could say I graduated
from the University of the Streets,

with a master's degree in
what Americans call hustle, heh.

I was in and out of jails

from the time that I was 14.

Then one night,

I was stabbed in a prison brawl.

The wound was severe.

I barely made it
back to my cell.

I prayed to God

that I might live.

I prayed hard.

I believed.

In my mind,

I pictured my
body perfect again.

And the next morning,
when I woke up,

there wasn't a mark on me.

It was a miracle.

The holes were
still in my shirt.

The dried blood
was on the sheets.

And from that day on, I
dedicated myself to God

and to teaching others

that miracles can
happen to them too.

And that includes you,

brother McGarrett.

Thank you, Reverend. Thank you.

I do believe in miracles.

I saw one happen today.

It was a miracle that Jim
Nelson didn't shoot you

when he had the chance.

Good day, gentlemen.
I'll be in touch.

You're sure you've never
heard of Marian Nelson?

Well. Hold on.

San Diego.

She was the lady who
died in that accident.

Then you did know her?

Oh, Reverend Andy sent me to
the hospital with flowers for her.

Poor thing, she didn't last
long enough to see them.

Are you saying the
Reverend Andy knew her?

No, as I understand it,

she'd only just joined the church
when the accident happened.

Did he have a special
interest in her? I mean...

I know what you mean.

There's no room in Reverend
Andy's life for anything but God,

and spreading his word.

Sister Harmony, I'm a little bit fuzzy
on how the Miracle Crusade operates.

What do they do
with all that money?

Hold it there, brother.

Your copper's mind
is working overtime.

Reverend Andy is truly
the man he says he is.

You're looking at one of
Reverend Andy's miracles right now.

You? How do you mean?

I was on the game in London.

25 going on dead.

What's on the game?

A streetwalker.

I was working Reverend
Andy's Miracle Crusade

at the Royal Albert Hall.

He picked me out of the crowd.

He saved my soul.

Sister Harmony, there are some
things that the Reverend Andy preaches

that some people just might
find a little hard to believe.

Oh?

There was another man who said
some things that were hard to believe.

That was 2,000 years ago.

Goodnight, Mr. Williams.

Goodnight.

Thank you, Governor.

But no apology is necessary.

Indeed, the poor man wasn't
even from your beautiful state.

That's very gracious
of you, Reverend.

Did Christ forsake his
executioners, the Romans?

Of course he didn't.

He sent his apostles amongst
them, spreading the word.

And many were converted.

Well, the Miracle Crusade is welcome
to come back to the Islands any time.

And thank you too, for your
thoughtful remembrance.

It will serve as
your calling card.

Wherever God's work takes me.

Reverend, if there's anything I can
do to make your stay more enjoyable,

don't hesitate to call.

Governor, uh, there is one
thing you might do for us.

Well, name it. If I can
be of help, I certainly will.

This police officer,
uh, McGarrett.

He asked some questions that
the reverend found most unsettling.

That's, uh... That's his job.

Yes, I, uh... I know he's, uh,
just doing what he thinks is his job,

Uh, I wonder if you, uh...
You couldn't speak to him.

Perhaps, uh, you could ask
him to be a little more tactful.

Steve, everyone
around there seems to be

a walking testimonial
to the reverend.

But none of them
knew Marian Nelson.

I have a hunch that to
understand what happened here,

we've got to know what
happened to Marian Nelson.

I'll call police in the morning.

No, that's not good
enough. Not this time, Danno.

There's a Redeye flight to
the Mainland at midnight.

Duke, how'd you like to see the
San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

I always wanted to travel.

And easy on the expense account.

I see.

Mm-hm.

Were there any
witnesses to the stabbing?

Thank you, sir.

Steve. McGARRETT: Yeah, Danno?

I just talked to the governor
of Wormwood Scrubs.

That's the name of the prison
where Reverend Andy did time.

There was a brawl. Two
men were stabbed to death.

A guard saw someone
helping Andy to his cell.

He was holding his abdomen.

Did the prison
doctor examine him?

Not until the next morning, when
the incident was investigated.

I see. So no one
actually saw the wound.

They just saw him
holding his abdomen.

Right.

Was the warden aware of Andrew
Norwood's, uh, miraculous healing?

Yes. But, he didn't
want to comment, uh,

English reticence,
I should imagine.

Well, we can't treat
this too lightly, Danno.

Miracle or no miracle,

evangelical religion is
a tradition in this country

and so is suspecting every
preacher of being a phony

as soon as he
takes up a collection.

I suppose men like Reverend Andy,
uh, are a lot of good to some people.

Probably.

I guess they offer some
kind of hope and insight

that certain people need
and can't find elsewhere.

It's a delicate
situation, Danno.

We could act with
the best of intentions

and end up doing a lot of harm.

I'd like to get some idea

of how these religious
crusades handle their money.

Why don't you have a chat with
the State Corporation Commission?

I'll take him to lunch.

I wasn't a disciple
of Reverend Andy's,

but I could certainly
understand Marian's desperation.

She felt like she was dying
a slow death of mediocrity.

She wanted more out of life.
- Much more.

And Reverend Andy
was selling hope.

Did you see much of
Marian before the accident?

Well, we were neighbors.
You know how it is.

But she came over to say
goodbye that very night.

She must've been one of the last
people to see Marian Nelson alive.

According to her,
Marian was determined

to see Reverend Andy personally.

She was going to
his dressing room,

follow him to his
hotel, whatever it took.

Did she tell all this to
the San Diego police?

Yes, but they didn't
think anything of it.

A lot of women try to
see Reverend Andy.

What about the police report?

One thing seemed strange.

The location of the accident.

The place where the
services were held

and the hotel where the reverend
stayed were both near Balboa Park.

The accident
happened in La Jolla.

La Jolla?

That's about ten
miles north of there.

What about his personal
life? Anything there?

Mm-mm, not even a rumor.

Okay, I'll pass this on.

Steve wants you to get on
the next plane to Phoenix.

The reverend is supposed
to be building a Tabernacle

in a town called,
uh, Joshua City.

Get over there and see how all
those donations are being spent.

I'm on my way.

Thank you, sir.

Isn't it about time for
your annual checkup?

Thank you for your
concern, but I'll be fine, Sister.

A few hours at the retreat will
rejuvenate me faster than any doctor.

You really oughtn't
to work so hard.

When I see those
people's faces change

as they come to understand
what I've been saying,

I feel so fulfilled.

It isn't work, it's joy, Sister.

Praise be, Reverend.

Bless you, Sister Harmony.

- Sister Harmony.
- Hmm.

If you're looking for
the Reverend Andy,

I'm afraid you just missed him.

Oh, where can I find him?

You can't.

He's gone to his retreat to
pray and cleanse his thoughts.

Oh, I see. Now, uh,
where would this retreat be?

I'm sorry, I can't give
you that information.

One of my men has
uncovered some new information

regarding the death
of Marian Nelson.

I just wanted to ask the
reverend a few questions.

If you wanted to
donate a million dollars,

I couldn't give you the
location of that retreat.

You have to understand.

The reverend has
almost no time to himself.

The retreats are his only
chance at being alone.

The retreats? You mean
he has a retreat in every city

where the Crusade goes?

How many people
know the locations?

I can't tell you that, either.

Please, don't be defensive.

I'm only after the truth.

Which is the cornerstone of
the reverend's life, and his work.

I know that many people
find comfort in his words.

It's not my intention to
tell anyone how to worship.

God knows, wars have
been fought over that issue.

I have no desire to
start one with you.

You're not at all like most
of the coppers I've met.

Thank you. I'll take
that as a compliment.

It was meant to be.

I'm sorry,

I really can't tell you
where the retreat is.

All right, I understand.

I'd appreciate it if
you'd ask the reverend

to contact me as
soon as he returns.

Thank you for your time, Sister.

Central, this is McGarrett. Give
me a patch to Dan Williams, please.

- Hold, please.
- Yeah, I'll hang on.

- Yeah.
- Danno,

I want you to organize an
H.P.D. plainclothes team

to follow Reverend
Andy, wherever he goes.

Around the clock.

Sure, Steve. What're
we looking for?

Apparently he has a
private retreat someplace.

A hideaway where he goes to
pray and, uh, cleanse his thoughts.

I wanna know where it is.

You sound a bit skeptical.

- Do I?
- Don't you think he prays?

- Do you?
- I haven't the foggiest.

I'm sorry to bother you, but, uh,
that cop McGarrett was here again.

I think I will be glad
to get off this rock.

He's getting rather irksome.

- What did he want?
- He was talking to Sister Harmony.

It seems they found
out something new

about Marian
Nelson in San Diego.

What?

What could it possibly be?

I don't know.

But I don't like any of this.

Maybe there's something
we can do about it.

Oscar, I'm gonna need your help.

Central to McGarrett.
Danny Williams calling.

Yeah, Danno. Go ahead.

Steve, where are you?

On Kapualani, heading
for the office. Why?

Better swing by H.P.D.
Something's going on there.

Something you ought to see.

Got it.

Jesus teaches us to
turn the other cheek.

For a moment, the weakness,

the humanness in me,
made me forget his teachings.

Then today, when I was
alone with him in prayer,

I saw Jim Nelson in jail

and I was reminded
of my own sufferings.

I knew in that moment

that I was wrong
to be the instrument

of Jim Nelson's suffering.

I have decided not
to press charges

of any kind against Jim Nelson.

There's no way
that any one of us

can make up to Jim

for the loss of
his beloved wife,

but the Miracle Crusade
wants to help anyone in pain.

Jim Nelson's wife, Marian,

believed so much in the crusade

that she donated $12000.

Well, I'm going
to repay that faith,

by giving that
$12,000 back to Jim,

along with a little extra.

Here is $25,000

to help Jim Nelson
get a new start in life.

He's something.

He sure is.

A "divine gesture"
they're calling it.

How about publicity stunt,
wouldn't that be more accurate?

Now, wait a minute, Steve.

We'd all look pretty foolish
if your hunch is wrong.

Evangelism is as
American as apple pie.

No, I'm not questioning
evangelism, Governor.

Just this one man.

I don't suggest for one
second that he's typical.

Most evangelists are
fine, dedicated men.

I'm just not so sure about
the Reverend Andy, that's all.

Well, do you have any
evidence against him?

No, sir. But something
about his wife's accident

in San Diego bothers me.

Let me show you something.

This is Balboa Stadium
where the Crusade was held.

Now, this is the hotel where
Reverend Andy was staying.

And here,

ten miles in the opposite
direction, is where the accident,

if indeed it was an
accident, took place.

Duke Lukela learned

that Marian Nelson was determined
to see the Reverend Andy that night.

You mean what was she doing
ten miles in the opposite direction?

Exactly. Maybe
I'm too suspicious,

but when you add
that to the empty gun,

and now this, uh,
"divine gesture,"

and what I think is
conscience money.

To help Nelson get a new start?
Well, figure it out for yourself.

Speaking of Nelson, what
are we gonna do about him?

Turn him loose?

For his own sake, I suggest
we keep him in custody

until this Crusade
leaves the Islands.

Now the Miracle Crusade holds
a New Mexico nonprofit charter.

And the IRS told me
just what I expected.

Heh, their returns are
so clean, they squeak.

Heh.

What about Norwood
and this Oscar Ross?

Yeah, now, there's an
interesting character.

You know, Ross discovered
the reverend in England

about ten years ago.

Brought him over here,
and the rest is history.

Ross has been associated with
several nonprofit organizations.

But this is his first time
in the religion business.

And it's the highest
position he's ever held.

Could he be the real power?

He could be doing a great deal
that Norwood doesn't know about,

and wouldn't understand
even if he did know.

You're absolutely sure they
haven't violated any of our state laws?

Yes.

But there is one thing
that struck me as unusual.

It seems they bought all the
land where they plan to build,

from one outfit, called the
Apache Land Company.

What's so unusual about that?

Well, it's not often you find the exact
hundred thousand acres you want

in one pair of hands.

Who owns the Apache
Land Company?

A couple of corporations.

Owned by another
couple corporations.

You got it.

Uh...

It's all in there.
Whatever it is.

Well, it's a start.

- Thanks, Tom. TOM:
Uh, you're welcome.

I just came back from the site.

The Tabernacle is there all right.
It's going up right on schedule.

And their finances seem solid?

I talked to the contractor.

He said they're a pleasure
to do business with.

Duke, before you come home,
go down to the Hall of Records,

and see what you can find out
about the Apache Land Company.

Okay, Steve,
I'll get right on it.

And, Duke, don't forget,

the Crusade will be leaving
the Islands in less than 36 hours.

So if we're gonna do anything
about it, we've gotta do it fast.

Right, Steve.

- Yes, Luana?
- Mr. McGarrett,

this just came in from H.P.D.

It's the lease on Reverend
Andy's hideaway house.

Signed by R.O. Windom.

I've seen that name before.

Here it is.

R.O. Windom,

treasurer of the
Apache Land Company.

Thank you, Luana.

- Steve.
- Yeah, Danno?

The surveillance team called in.

Reverend Andy left the house,
but a little later one of those singers,

the one called Sister Sarah,
drove in like she'd been there before.

Sister Sarah?

I wonder what Sister Harmony
would have to say about that.

- Shall I find out?
- Yeah, Danno, find out.

We found Reverend
Andy's retreat.

We'd expected something
a little more modest.

Oh, heh, they're
not all like that.

What was the one
in San Diego like?

I really couldn't tell you.

Do you remember
the general location?

Yeah, I think so.

Oh, it was around there
some... Yeah, there.

La Jolla.

That's where Marian
Nelson had her accident.

What does that prove?

That Marian Nelson was
seeing Reverend Andy in private.

Mr. Williams, I'm really sorry
about what happened to that woman,

but I've already told you

the Reverend Andy isn't
like other men in that way.

Besides, women are never
permitted to enter a retreat.

I only know where they
are in case of an emergency.

That's funny.

One of our men saw Sister
Sarah going into that house.

- He must've been mistaken.
- I don't think so.

All your pictures
were in the newspaper.

I just don't know.

How do you like your eggs,
sweetheart? I've forgotten.

That's not very
flattering, Andy.

Well, I can't
remember everything.

Listen, darling, if you'd
like a dip in the pool,

we've got plenty of time to...

- Sister Harmony.
- Harmony.

Sarah.

What are you doing here?

It's, ugh... It's all true.

Harmony, wait.

Andy, go after her.

No.

No, she's committed
to the cause.

She'll be back.

- Where did they pick her up?
- Bar on Hotel Street. She started early.

- Why didn't you call me sooner?
- She had no ID.

Must've lost her purse.
Then she passed out.

You were right,
you and your man.

About everything.

Well, that's what we
get paid for, Sister.

I'm sorry if you got hurt.

He was with Sarah.

They were... They had been...

Yeah.

Do you want me
to get you a lawyer?

You don't have to answer
any questions of mine.

- You know that, don't you?
- Yes, I do.

Not for me. For Marian Nelson.

Poor Marian Nelson.

She must've caught the reverend
with another lady, just as you did.

But she wasn't as lucky
as you were, Sister.

- You're sure you'll be all right, huh?
- Yeah.

It was, uh, a
momentary slip, heh.

And slips don't count as a
knockdown, you know that.

You know, it's funny.

Reverend Andy may be
a fraud and a hypocrite,

but he gave me the most
important thing I have.

He taught me to
believe in myself.

Yeah. And for most of us,
that's the hardest thing to learn.

Maybe I was blessed
with a miracle after all.

I wouldn't be at all surprised.

She wouldn't let me pay the
fine. She wouldn't talk to me.

She only wanted
to see McGarrett.

- What can she tell him?
- You know what she can tell him.

Would you take the
word of an ex-whore

against that of the Lord's
own chosen minister?

McGarrett would.

Come off it. How long do
you think it's gonna take him

to find out what happened
to that Nelson woman.

He can speculate all he wants.

You and I are the only people
who know that I ever met her.

Tell me the truth, Andy.

What really happened that night?

Same thing as Harmony.

She found me with some girl.

Andy, couldn't you
be more careful?

Look how far we've come,

and you wanna give it all
up for some cheap tramp.

Look, this is our
last day in Hawaii.

One more service and we're
gone. We'll never come back.

You're damn right, we won't.

Will you relax? You're
going to have a heart attack.

Besides, Oscar, we
haven't broken any laws.

Will you do something for me?

Will you try and remember
how this all started?

How I found you in that pub

trying to save souls
between dart games?

How I brought you to America
and made you what you are today?

Andy, who has been
right every step of the way?

- The Lord did it, Oscar.
- Ugh.

You were only his instrument.

Okay, Andy, but I
now have a vision.

We have 12 hours left here.

I don't want you
to talk to anyone.

Not anyone. Okay?

Okay.

Uh-uh.

Hello.

This is Steve McGarrett
of Hawaii Five-0.

May I speak to the
Reverend Andy, please?

Oh, uh, Mr. McGarrett,
uh, this is, uh, Oscar Ross.

No, the reverend is
unavailable at the moment.

Oh, I see. I still have some
questions I was hoping to ask him.

Maybe if I came to the hotel?
Would that be convenient?

Heh, oh, it wouldn't
do you any good.

You wouldn't believe the
insanity that goes on around here

before the last service.

Uh, but if you would care to submit
your, uh... Your questions in writing...?

In writing?

No, I don't think that would
be necessary, Mr. Ross.

- Thank you very much.
- Goodbye.

Whatever you do, don't talk
to McGarrett, not without me.

That Ross is a pretty smart
fella. He's fast on his feet.

- Doesn't look good, does it, Steve?
- No, it doesn't, Danno.

But somewhere in
this maze is the answer.

- Steve, I think I have something.
- What've you got?

Look at the price the Miracle
Crusade paid for the land

it bought for the Tabernacle.

Yeah. What about it?

Now look at the price Apache
Land Company paid for it

only two years ago.

Bought it for $10 an acre,
and sold it for $1,400 an acre?

That's a 14,000 percent profit if
my pocket calculator's working.

That's what I
call a nifty profit.

Uh, you'll never guess who
controls Apache Land Company.

Not good old R.O. Windom, again?

Try Oscar Ross and
Andrew Norwood.

- How? How do they control it?
- I'll show you.

These two companies
own Apache Land.

One belongs to Ross,
the other to Norwood.

You mean, they sold
the land to themselves?

- Isn't that a conflict of interests?
- That's the bad news.

The Miracle Crusade charter
doesn't prohibit any officer

from doing business
with the church.

You mean none
of this is illegal?

It may not be illegal,
but it's certainly unethical.

Maybe we could expose
him to the press or something.

That might invite a
defamation of character suit.

What we need now is one
of Reverend Andy's miracles.

Danno, I think I may
be able to find one.

Uh, will you two gentlemen
meet me at the Civic Auditorium,

15 minutes before
the reverend goes on?

So the stray lamb
has returned to the fold.

If the good shepherd
will have me.

Of course, Sister Harmony.

I knew you'd come back.

I welcome you with open arms.

What's wrong, Sister?

Please. For me.
So I can understand.

What happened
with you and Sarah?

What's there to explain?

I'm a man, and she is a woman.

Surely you can understand that.

But you're a special person.

People worship you.

I give people what they need.

In return, my needs are met.

Marian Nelson?

- You needed her?
- No.

No, I think she
was a bit unstable.

I tried to calm her, but
she went screaming off.

That sounds so cold.

But I know you're discreet enough
to keep our little secret in the family.

The Apache Land Company, is
that a family secret too, Reverend?

All right, McGarrett, what
about the Apache Land?

You and Oscar Ross
used that company

to buy cheap desert land,

and then sold it to the Crusade
for over 10,000 percent profit.

Is there any law
against making a profit?

What about the moral law?

Where your church
members are concerned?

I Give these people
hope and solace.

And in return, they pay for it.

What's so immoral about that?

If there's nothing
wrong with it,

why did you go to such lengths

to hide the truth in a
maze of corporations?

Isn't that the way business
is done in this country?

Well, I just wonder
how your flock will react

when they know their
shepherd has been fleecing them.

Fleecing? That's a
slanderous statement.

You can tell my flock
whatever you want,

in the end, it will be
my word against yours.

I don't think so, Reverend. I
don't think so. Not this time.

Andy! Andy, my God,
what're you doing?

Turn your mike off. It's
going out over the PA.

What do you mean?
I haven't got it.

I put on mine.

Sister.

Wait!

Please, listen to me!

Let me explain!

That was a trick! Somebody...
Somebody tricked me!

Brothers! Sisters! Please!

Come back! Hold me!

Let me share your light!

There'll be miracles!

Save your breath. It's all over.

Please, come back.

You, uh... You need me!

Don't you understand, you...

You need me.

I'll bring you miracles.

There'll be miracles.

Oh, God.

Danno, you can call H.P.D. now.

Tell them they can
turn Jim Nelson loose.

- Oh, God.
- I'm sorry.

Oh, God.

You turned away your
loving face from thy servant

in the days of thy wrath.

Oh, God.

Sweet Jesus!

Sweet tender Jesus.
