Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 10, Episode 7 - Shake Hands with the Man on the Moon - full transcript

A crusading journalist is murdered, and McGarrett suspects that the killing was ordered by Frank Devlin, a sleazy real estate developer from the mainland, who was the target of a series of articles by the journalist. McGarrett focuses his attention on Richard Royce, a down-on-his-luck former astronaut who has gone to work for Devlin to help generate interest in Devlin's new Hawaiian subdivision. Royce gradually comes to suspect that Devlin might just have been capable of murder -- especially when another person whose land Devlin wants also ends up dead.

- He just came in.
- Make it work. And make it clean.

McGARRETT: I'm surprised
that Knight let himself get suckered

into something like that, Danno.

He was a pro, a
damn good reporter.

MAN: Yes, sir, that's a
genuine all-American hero,

and he's here to help me
tell you all about Moonstone.

This real-estate sales pitch,

a man of your
background and reputation?

Reputation won't pay the rent.

Get out of my office.

Devlin, I was very sorry
to see you come to Hawaii.

This is a good place to live,
and I mean to keep it that way.

[PHONE RINGS]

Room 3658.

MAN [OVER PHONE]:
Knight? John David Knight?

This is John David Knight.

I hear you're doing another one
of your exposés on Frank Devlin.

Who is this?

REED: Someone who
wants to sell information.

- Like what?
- There's a bar at Kapahulu and Date.

Meet me there in a half an
hour. It's called Napoleons.

[ENGINE STOPS]

KNIGHT: Beer.

I was, um, expecting someone.

Aren't we all?

[PHONE RINGS]

- Yeah?
- It's me.

- He just came in.
- Good.

Make it work. And make it clean.

Right.

Your name Knight?

Then you got a call.

Hello?

DEVLIN [OVER PHONE]: Knight?
- Yes.

Just so you know,
this is Frank Devlin.

Devlin?

[LINE CLICKS]

[SIRENS WAILING]

MAN: Roll it out.

[TIRES SQUEALING]

Duke is checking out
Knight's hotel room.

- What have we got, Danno?
- Not too much, Steve.

You mean no witnesses?
No patrons in the bar?

- There wasn't supposed to be.
- What does that mean?

This place shouldn't be
open for another couple hours.

You mean somebody
opened it especially for Knight?

Yeah, and they forgot
the key, cut the lock.

What about the alarm system?

It's around the back.
The circuits were bridged.

Has the owner been notified yet?

Yeah. He seemed plenty
surprised. H.P.D. is bringing him over.

DISPATCHER [OVER RADIO]:
Central calling McGarrett.

Mr. McGarrett? Call for you.

Thank you.

- McGarrett. DUKE
[OVER RADIO]: It's Duke.

I'm at Knight's hotel room.
Somebody tore it apart.

DUKE: No tapes,
no files, nothing.

They must have found
what they were looking for.

Okay, Duke, get a list
of Knight's phone calls

and have Chin
cover the local banks.

See if Knight had a
safe-deposit box anywhere.

Right, Steve.

DANNY: Sounds like
they were thorough.

Yeah.

I'm surprised that Knight
let himself get suckered

into something like that, Danno.

He was a pro, a
damn good reporter.

- Have you seen this morning's paper?
- No.

Have a look.

"There's really no mystery
how Frank Devlin operates.

The mystery is
why he's not in jail.

He's built instant slums in Florida,
a collapsible dam in North Dakota,

and sold Indian desert
land in Arizona that he stole.

Now the barracuda is about
to sink his teeth into paradise.

However, this time,
your reporter promises

Mr. Devlin is going
to lose those teeth."

Look at the byline.

"John David Knight."

You think Devlin's
really capable of murder?

No question about it, Danno.

Oh, I don't think he
planted the bomb.

He's too smart for that.
But Devlin ordered the hit.

Nobody's ever been able
to prove anything on Devlin.

That doesn't make him
innocent, just cunning.

But we'll get him. Bet on it.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

[CROWD APPLAUDING]

Folks, shake hands with
the man on the moon.

Form a line right
here, please, folks.

Come on, folks,
don't be bashful.

That really is Richard
Royce the astronaut.

Dick, take that helmet off. Show
the folks your handsome face.

There he is.

I told you he was
worth waiting for, girls.

Oh, Dick, you should
have been in the movies.

[DEVLIN CHUCKLES]

Yes, sir, that's a genuine
all-American hero,

and he's here to help me
tell you all about Moonstone,

our new planned community

that's as clean and
uncluttered as the moon itself

but a lot more
comfortable, right, Dick?

As we used to say at
NASA, that's a go, Frank.

Folks, I would like for
you to meet the man

who's been trying to embarrass
me with all these compliments,

Frank Devlin.

[CROWD APPLAUDING]

He's the hero, folks.

I'm just a businessman
with a dream,

and that dream is to build you folks
the best place in the world to live.

Now, I'm gonna be in my office

when you're ready
to look at the models.

They're all yours, Dick.

You're A-okay with me, Frank.
Let's give him a big hand, folks.

- What a circus.
- Yeah.

Let's go and have a
talk with the ringmaster.

- Look at that.
- Can you believe it?

McGARRETT: I bet
NASA would love that.

DANNY: Yeah.

Devlin.

You don't seemed
surprised to see us.

What do you want, McGarrett?

For openers, I wanna know where
you were at 2:00 this afternoon.

I was having lunch with
a friend at The Terrace.

- I suppose a lot of people saw you.
- Well, we weren't exactly hiding.

She's not married
and neither am I.

Look, McGarrett, Knight
was a big pain to me,

so I will admit I'm not
exactly heartbroken,

but don't you come in here
trying to make your job easy.

What happened to the smooth,
sophisticated Frank Devlin

that we see on the
TV commercials?

Listen, gentlemen, I've got
customers coming in here.

- Customers? You mean pigeons.
- Get out of my office.

Devlin, I was very sorry
to see you come to Hawaii.

This is a good place to live,
and I mean to keep it that way.

Now, if it was up to me,

you would've been out
of here a long time ago.

McGarrett, you would've
made a hell of a king.

You know what's
best for everybody.

Fortunately, this is
still a free country,

and I am free to conduct
business however I want.

You're gonna wish
you never saw Hawaii.

Now, I'm a patient man,

but I have a feeling you're
gonna spend some time here

in a cold, damp cell.

Let's go, Danno.

- What was that about?
- Cops. Do you believe it?

They think I had something
to do with killing that reporter.

[CHUCKLES]

The cops sure as
hell found something.

REED: He couldn't have.
We tore Knight's place apart.

There was nothing but
the tape of my phone call.

Well, you must have
missed something.

The guy in Arizona said
that Knight had everything

on the Indian-land transfer.

If he did, it sure
wasn't in his room.

Did you look for
safety-deposit-box keys?

Yeah.

Mr. Devlin, maybe
McGarrett's bluffing,

you know, trying to get
you to make a mistake.

You think that didn't occur to
me too? I can't take the chance.

I'm home.

Chris, where are you?

WOMAN: Richard?
- Yeah.

WOMAN: I'm in the shower.

- We still going out?
- Sure. I showered at Frank's club.

I had to let him beat
me in racquetball again.

WOMAN: What are you gonna wear?
- I don't know. What I got on, I guess.

WOMAN: I got a surprise for
you. It's hanging in the bedroom.

- How do you like it?
- You think it's me?

Oh, I missed you.

- How'd it go today?
- Ugh. How does it go any day?

Trained seal did his act.
Frank made a few sales.

Lighten up, okay?

[ROYCE CHUCKLES]

[BOTH MOAN]

CHRIS: I gotta get dressed.

Put that shirt on, please.

Well, how do you like it?

It could shock a guy
into male menopause.

That doesn't exist.

It was made up by
some jealous old woman

who didn't want
her husband to know

he was getting
better-looking all the time.

I wonder what Rick
and Donny would think.

I think they'd be proud to see
their father looking so good.

What do you think?

I think you're very good for me.

The governor's really upset about
the indictments that came down.

Oh. Chin called in. He
had no luck at the banks.

If Knight had a safe-deposit
box, it was under another name.

Could take us
forever to find it.

Danno, Knight has been
after Devlin for years.

Now, how could he suddenly
come up with the proof he needed?

DANNY: Must have found a source.

- Yeah, that's my guess too.
- But who?

Well, Devlin has had hundreds of
employees over a period of years.

Any one of them could
harbor a grudge against him.

But none of them had
the nerve to talk until now.

Let's hope that Knight's
last story moved someone.

Steve, here's a list of calls
to and from Knight's room.

Anything?

DUKE: One call to John Knight

and three from him
to that same number.

Whose number is it?

DUKE: The astronaut,
Commander Richard Royce.

ROYCE: Well, there
was no mystery about it.

He just wanted to do a
story on who I used to be.

McGARRETT: Altogether, Knight
wrote 12 feature articles on you.

He must have known
you pretty well, huh?

I still turned him down.

And that took three phone calls?

Well, I wasn't
sure until I realized

all he wanted was a
way to get to Frank.

And you refused to give Knight
any information against Devlin?

Snooping on a guy who
gave me a decent break

just isn't my style.

Besides, I didn't know
anything to tell him.

How long have you
been with Devlin?

Since the Moonstone project
started, almost six months.

And he brought you
back to the islands?

No. No, I came back to
the islands on my own.

A lot of happy memories here.

We trained for the moon walk
on the lava fields near Mauna Loa.

- You must know that.
- Oh, yeah, I know that.

I also know Frank Devlin.

Somehow it doesn't fit.

This real-estate sales pitch,

a man of your
background and reputation?

[SCOFFS]

Reputation won't pay the rent.

And you gave him no
information whatsoever?

Come on, McGarrett. I didn't
know anything to tell him.

Listen, all I do is meet people
and let them shake my hand.

- I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.
- Oh, don't be sorry, commander.

Don't be sorry.

I'm always glad to meet
a true American hero,

to quote our late
friend John Knight.

[SIGHS]

Like old soldiers,
heroes tend to fade away.

Heroes live as long
as people respect them.

McGARRETT: Yes?

Yes, that's right.
Commander Richard Royce.

I'd like all the information
NASA has on him

and the names of the other astronauts
who trained down here with him.

That's right.

Do you think that anyone
who knew him from that period

might still be living
in the islands?

I see.

No, I'm sorry, tomorrow
might be too late.

Oh, that would be fine. I'd
appreciate that very much.

Thank you.

Yeah, Steve. Not much new
on Royce since he came back.

Stays mostly to himself,

but there is a girlfriend,
a Chris Harmon.

- Anything on her?
- She's clean in the islands.

I requested information
from the mainland.

- Nothing's come back yet.
- Keep after it, Danno.

I wanna know everything there
is to know about Richard Royce

and the people around him.

Royce? I thought
we were after Devlin.

John Knight wasn't a cop,

but he was awfully good
about getting the facts.

Now, my bet is that
he was after Royce

to get evidence on Devlin.

You think Royce is privy
to that kind of information?

If he wasn't, he was in a hell
of a position to get it, wasn't he?

ROYCE: I wish you would at
least sit down with Mr. Devlin.

The development will make it possible
for a lot more people to enjoy this.

[RAMOS CHUCKLES]

RAMOS: Ah, the old Hawaiian
gods would never let my soul rest.

You know, it's really an honor for me
to meet a man who walk on the moon.

You tell me something.
What was it like up there?

ROYCE: The truth?
It was peaceful.

A couple of times,

I just turned off my headset
and listened to the silence.

Yeah, sometimes I come out here

and I just sit, you know,
for the same reason.

I know what you mean.

Hey, you're a pretty
good rider for a city boy.

ROYCE: Actually, I, uh...
I was raised on a ranch.

It wasn't a ranch,

it was about a hundred
acres of desert in West Texas.

I couldn't wait to leave
there fast enough.

I thought that running away was
the solution to all my problems.

It's a truism that all our
solutions becomes our problems.

- That's Will Rogers.
- What's the matter?

You think us old
Hawaiians, we don't read?

It's just my grandfather was a
cowboy with Will Rogers in Oklahoma.

Every time he wanted to make a point,
he said, "As old Will used to say..."

Yeah, Will Rogers.
He was one great man.

Hyah, let's hit it.

ROYCE: Whoa.

It's incredible.

Yeah, but nothing
compared to what it was like

when you're standing on the moon
and looking back at the Earth, huh?

- Listen to the wind.
- Remind you of the moon?

- Ha, ha. No, West Texas.
- Oh, ha, ha.

- Mr. Ramos, can I ask you a favor?
- Sure.

Can I come back again sometime?

It would be an honor.
Wait till I tell my grandkids.

And listen, when you come
back, you bring your kids.

I get plenty horses.

I'm afraid my kids
aren't with me.

I never had time for them,

and now I got nothing but time,
and they're 5,000 miles away.

McGARRETT: Thank
you for finding time for me

on your day off, Mr. Richmond.

That's no problem.

I'm sorry you had to
come clear down here,

but I promised Buzz this trip.

Buzz, why don't you
take a look around the ship

while Mr. McGarrett and I talk?

Okay, Dad.

You and Richard Royce

went through the Apollo
program together, didn't you?

I flew the mother ship

while he was walking
around on the moon.

- I remember that day well.
- Heh.

Well, maybe you do, but 200
million other Americans don't.

Royce got all the glory
with that little flag of his.

You don't sound like
you're too friendly.

We were. But it could
have been me down there.

I had that assignment locked
up till he started pulling rank.

How the mighty have fallen.

You're aware of what
he's doing now, aren't you?

Yeah. I've seen the commercials.

I feel very lucky after all.

He's a handsome lad.

What do you think happened
to Royce, Mr. Richmond?

Frankly, I never really
understood what happened.

Life just turned sour, I guess.

He was a celebrity,
signed with a talent agency,

but he just couldn't cut it,

which didn't exactly
break my heart at the time.

Then I got to
feeling sorry for him.

Tried to get him a
job with our company.

That didn't work out either.

Then he just disappeared.

Next time I saw him was
on TV, peddling real estate.

- He was married, wasn't he?
- He was.

And I think that hurt him most
of all. He has a couple of boys.

Any idea where his
wife is living now?

She was his high-school sweetheart.
I'd guess they all went back to Texas.

Thank you, Mr. Richmond.

Buzz, give me five.

- Attaboy. BUZZ: Bye, sir.

Some salesman you
turned out to be, huh?

I send you out there to
soften up the old man,

and he converts you.

Frank, that old man has
lived there his whole life.

It would be a shame to make
him leave even if he did wanna sell.

Well, you think it
would help if I gave him,

I mean, you know, really gave
him, a house where he wanted it?

That's not the point.

Besides, he's already got a
house right where he wants it.

Okay, Dick, you made your
point. I gotta think about it.

Hey, did I tell you sales
are booming at Moonstone

in spite of that hack reporter?

Frank, uh, ahem, McGarrett,
that policeman, came to talk to me.

And what did you tell him?

I told him I was grateful
to you for giving me a job.

Hey, you're not a charity,
you're a great attraction.

Frank, you didn't have anything
to do with Knight's murder?

You must be kidding me, Dick.

Do I look like a guy
who could kill somebody

over a lousy hatchet job?

Hey, hey, listen. Go down
to the pool, will you, please?

Find your girlfriend,
relax a little bit.

You take things
far too seriously.

Listen, Frank, you will
think about the old man?

I said I would, didn't I?

Okay.

[DIALING PHONE]

Reed, the soft
approach didn't work.

You better have a
talk with the old man.

CHRIS: Is there any trouble?
- No, no, everything's fine, babe.

CHRIS: Then why don't
you put your suit on?

No, I want you to get dressed.

There's a place I wanna show
you and a man I want you to meet.

CHRIS: Okay.

Be right with you.

Yes, well, thank you for your
help. I appreciate the information.

Very well.

DANNY: Steve?
- Yeah, Danno? Come on out.

I just talked to Royce's
former booking agent.

He said essentially the
same thing as Richmond.

Royce just
missed hitting it big.

Seems to be the story of
his life since the mission.

Yeah.

He did give me one
important piece of information.

He thinks that Royce's ex-wife
remarried and is living in Houston.

- What are you looking for, Steve?
- I don't know.

Well, take a look at this.

It's a list of the
stockholders in Moonstone.

McGARRETT: Hmm.

Roanoke Corporation,

Empire Investments,
St. Julian Properties, Inc.

Stockholders. And who
owns all these corporations?

More corporations. It's
the way Devlin operates.

Yeah.

Whew.

ROYCE: Isn't it fantastic?
- Whew.

I don't know what to say.

- Say you love it.
- Oh, I love it.

You think you could
live someplace like this?

- Kind of far from town.
- Well, that's the best part.

Chris, it's not just that that old
man reminds me of my grandfather.

It's this place.

I mean, I could
really live here.

Maybe I could have the
boys over once in a while.

You said Frank wanted
to develop this place.

- Oh, the old man won't sell to Frank.
- But he will sell to you?

No, but I'm hoping maybe
he'll lease me a place

so I can build a house.

What do you think?

I think you look really
sexy in Western shirts.

You remind me of Randolph Scott.

Ha, ha. Come on, be serious.

You're not old enough to
remember Randolph Scott.

I am too.

Does that mean you're with me?

Mm-hm.

How many times I gotta
tell you? I don't want to sell.

- Your kids don't feel that way.
- You talked to my kids?

Devlin hoped they'd
talk some sense to you.

I save this place for them.

They don't want it. They
live in San Francisco.

I've said all I've got
to say. Now you go.

Not this time, old man.

One thing you're forgetting. I
don't know anything about ranching.

I do.

It won't be easy, but there
will be lot of satisfaction too.

I love you.

[HORSE CLOPPING]

Richard.

Hyah! Hyah!

Whoa.

[CAR APPROACHING]

What have we got, Danno?

Looks like he had a skull
fracture. Can't be sure yet,

but the medical examiner thinks
Ramos may have been dead

before he hit the ground.

Really?

Okay, thank you.

Commander.

Have you known him a long time?

I just met him a few
times, but I felt close to him.

I understand Devlin was trying
to buy this place to develop it.

Yes, that's how I met Mr. Ramos.

I wonder if his heirs will be
any easier to deal with now.

You'll have to
ask Devlin, not me.

You must be Chris Harmon, huh?

Listen, I'm the one that
called you. You can talk to me.

You were riding
together, weren't you?

She might have seen something
that would indicate it was an accident.

She saw nothing
because I saw nothing.

And neither of you saw
anyone around here today?

No, I already told you that.

McGARRETT: Very well.

You know where to reach
me if you change your mind.

You seem awfully
upset, commander.

I liked the old man, McGarrett.

I'm just upset about
his death, that's all.

Well, death is always upsetting,

especially when a good
man is taken before his time.

So that's Chris Harmon, huh?

- Any word on her yet, Danno?
- No, nothing yet.

Maybe you ought to
check with Juvenile.

She looks young
enough to be his daughter.

[ENGINE STARTS]

ROYCE: Look, Frank, I just don't
understand why you had to kill him.

- Who says I killed anybody?
- Oh, come on.

I may be a monkey dancing
on the end of your string,

but I'm not stupid.

You could've offered
him more money.

Who's the one who said
he wouldn't sell at any price?

Look, if I'd have known what the
alternative was, I'd have tried harder.

Listen, Royce,
you're not my partner.

You don't have to know
about any alternatives.

Just wear your funny suit,
shake hands with the people,

wave your flag, and
be glad you've got a job.

- I'm looking for a promotion, Frank.
- A promotion?!

You're lucky I don't put
you back where I found you.

And you're lucky that
I don't tell McGarrett

that I recognized the
car at the Ramos place.

I could've been a hero
again, Frank. Think about it.

Tell him.

Let me see what kind
of a hero you could be.

Oh, you're really
cool, aren't you, Frank?

Maybe you wouldn't be so cool if
you knew what John Knight told me.

What?

He tried to buy me, Frank.
I talked to him three times.

I know why you had
John Knight killed.

Well, if you were sitting on evidence,
that makes you an accomplice,

so let's say we had him killed.

Well, that's the whole
point of this little talk, Frank.

If I'm a partner to murder,
I want more money.

Dick.

You're a partner.

[DEVLIN LAUGHS]

Come on.

[TAPE REWINDING]

ROYCE [ON RECORDING]: I
know why you had him killed.

DEVLIN [ON RECORDING]: If
you've been sitting on evidence,

it makes you an accomplice,
so let's say we had him killed.

ROYCE: That's it.

[ROYCE SIGHS]

Is he really gonna
make you a partner?

He'd make me a partner of Ramos
and Knight if I didn't hold that tape.

So, what are you
gonna do with it?

I'm gonna give it to McGarrett.

Why?

I owe it to the old
man. I owe it to Ramos.

What are you trying to do?
Make yourself a hero again?

He didn't have to kill him.

So why didn't you go to
McGarrett when Knight was killed?

I don't know. I
just wasn't sure.

Richard.

If you wanna get back at Devlin,

why don't you
make him really pay?

What do you mean?

That cassette could
be worth a lot of money.

- Blackmail him?
- He owes you something.

You said yourself
he owes you plenty.

You could make a copy of the
tape and sell the original to Devlin

for enough money so that
we can go someplace far away.

And then when we're safe, you
could send the copy to McGarrett.

Richard.

You said the decision
affected both of us.

We'll never have another
chance like this again, believe me.

Oh, I do believe
you. It's just...

I don't know if I can do it.

You don't have to
decide right now.

Steve, telex on Chris
Harmon just came in.

Oh.

See if you can locate Royce.

He's probably at Moonstone
Estates peddling lots.

- Tell him I'd like to
see him. DANNY: Right.

McGARRETT: She has a
record going back five years.

So she's an outcast like me.
Maybe that's why we're together.

Can't you see that
she's using you?

Come on, McGarrett. Have
you taken a good look at me?

I mean, who the
hell isn't using me?

She loves me.

And she makes me feel like something
for the first time in a long time.

I don't care about
anything else.

Commander, what the
hell happened to you?

Well, that's no
mystery. I couldn't cut it.

All right, let's
hold it right there.

You graduated among the top
ten in your class at Annapolis.

You were selected out of hundreds
by NASA for astronaut training.

You've had all kinds of
honors heaped upon you,

so please, don't
give me that loser act.

It won't work.

Well, that's too bad.
It's all I have left.

It's all you have left, huh?

What about your skills?
What about your expertise?

God, you're pathetic.

Other men have had bad
breaks, but I can't think of anyone

who has handled them
any worse than you.

What do you plan to do?

Hang around Devlin for the
rest of your life and be his flunky?

Hero-ing is one of the most
short-lived professions in the world.

All my clippings baled together
wouldn't buy one chicken.

Will Rogers said
that about himself.

It's something to think about

when you don't know
where you're going

or if you'll ever get there.

But this time, McGarrett, this
time, Chris and I have it worked out.

[SCOFFS]

She's really got you
snowed, hasn't she?

Well, there's something you
don't know about your girlfriend.

When did you meet her?

About four months ago.

Shortly after you went
to work for Devlin, right?

A month or so.

[PAPER RUSTLING]

Did you know that Chris Harmon
was arrested last summer in Phoenix

for trying to blackmail
a state senator?

The senator refused to press
charges when the case went to court,

but guess who made her bail.

Frank Devlin.

Think about it, commander.

Why didn't you bring the tape?

He took it with him.

Well, I have to admit, he's
smarter than I thought he was.

But still not smart enough.

All you have to do is wait
for him to come to you.

And take a chance on
his changing his mind

on going to McGarrett.

I'll keep him in line. He's
not gonna go to McGarrett.

You'd better believe he won't.

Still good for
something, aren't I?

Sure, baby.

You're worth a bundle.

See you later.

DANNY: Tell the DA
that's all we have on this.

RECEPTIONIST: Okay, Danny.

DANNY: How'd it go with Royce?
- Oh, it hit him pretty hard, Danno.

I think he's about
ready to make a move.

- Should we put a tail on him?
- No, I don't think so.

I'm hoping he'll come
in here on his own.

- What if he doesn't?
- Well, he's right on the edge, Danno.

If this doesn't push
him over, nothing will.

[CHRIS GASPS]

Richard, what are you doing?

- Look at me straight.
- What?

It's true, isn't it?

About you and Devlin.

McGarrett told me.

Okay, it's true, I was his girl.

And you're still
working for him, right?

Come here.

Recognize that car? Look at it.

CHRIS: Should I?

The ranch. It was pulling
away as we rode up.

- So?
- So?

So somebody's up in that
apartment waiting for me right now.

Oh, Chris, why?

Why?

I mean, was it the money? What?

Of course it's the money.

I love you, and you told
me that you loved me too.

Did you really think
I could love you?

Did you ever really
look at who you are?

Richard, you are a freak.

You belong in a real circus with
your funny suit and your little flag.

Did you really think
I could love a joke?

I was just trying to put it
together for you, for me,

just to make it work.

No, you weren't.

You're always gonna
be somebody's robot.

Frank Devlin winds you up,

and you go out there
and lie to the people.

You've got no guts, Richard,
and he's absolutely right,

you are nothing.

Wait a minute, who are
you to be talking, huh?

Look, I've been hustling
since I was 13 years old.

I'm not always proud of what I am,
but at least I'm not lying to myself.

You go out there every day
as the great American hero.

People trust you, Richard.

Don't you know that they're
gonna let Devlin steal from them

because you say he's A-okay?

I didn't know.

You knew what you were doing.

Be honest for once.

CHRIS: Richard!

[ENGINE STARTS]

[TIRES SQUEALING]

Where's Royce?

CHRIS: How should I know?
- You haven't seen him?

He was here a minute
ago. He took off in his car.

I don't know where he went.

REED: If he comes back,
keep him here and call Devlin.

Yeah. Where did you
get the information, Chin?

I see. Did you speak
with his children?

Oh, the bank is
the executor. Hmm.

All right, Chin, good
work. Thank you.

Chin said the Ramos family
got an offer to sell the ranch today

to a Las Vegas corporation.

- All cash.
- Devlin.

Yeah, that would be my guess.

- That dude works fast.
- He sure does.

I'm gonna have to do
the same thing, Danno.

Get Duke and Chin. Meet me
at his place in about an hour.

Right.

DEVLIN: Wear your
funny suit, wave your flag,

shake hands with the people,
and be glad you've got a job.

CHRIS: You belong in a real circus
with your funny suit and your little flag.

You're a freak.

McGARRETT: You've had all
kinds of honors heaped upon you.

CHRIS: Did you really
think I could love a joke?

Frank Devlin winds you up, and
you go out and lie to the people.

DEVLIN: You're a partner.

[DEVLIN LAUGHS]

I'm looking for Richard Royce.

He's not here. I don't
know where he is.

- You don't?
- That's not a lie. I don't know.

Do you want him dead?

No.

Okay, all right. He, um...

He has a tape that
could hang Devlin.

His men just left here.
They'll kill to get it.

Yeah, where is he?

I really don't know.

But he wants to get Devlin.

Hey, Dick, we've been
looking all over for you.

No, what you were looking
for is this. It's gonna nail you.

Come on, Dick. I
know what you want.

Play it straight with me,
you got it. The good life.

Wrong, Frank, I
want my self-respect.

- I want it back.
- You sold it, remember?

Come on, it's a matter of
price now. We can get together.

No, this time the
price isn't in money.

You're coming with me. Come on.

- Hey, hey, hey. REED:
Stay where you are.

- Get the tape.
- Up against the tree.

[ALL GRUNTING]

McGARRETT: Danno,
you come with me.

Take the front. Let's go.

Hold it.

All right, up against
the tree, let's go.

[DEVLIN GASPS]

Come on, who are
you kidding, Royce?

You haven't got the guts.
You're not man enough anymore.

McGARRETT: Commander!

- Commander, wait.
- Stay back, McGarrett, stay back.

McGARRETT: With your help,
we can convict him of murder.

I was gonna do that, McGarrett.

I'd decided to cooperate,
but this way is sure.

Sure? It's a sure way
to life imprisonment.

If you pull that trigger, you'll
end up behind bars, not him.

What's the difference?
I've got nothing left.

McGARRETT: Commander.

Think of the man you
were ten years ago.

You can be that man again.

You've got the same mind, the
same character, same talents.

Sure, we've all had
some bad breaks,

and I know you've had
more than your share,

but for God's sake,
pick up the pieces.

You can do it.
Please. You can do it.

Richard.

Give me the gun.

Give me the gun.

Thank you.

And the tape.

Thank you, sir.

Danno,

book him.

Two counts murder one.
