Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 10, Episode 24 - A Death in the Family - full transcript

While Chin Ho Kelly investigates a protection racket run by the Hawaiian "kumu" mob, three mob members recognize him as being from Five-O. The deputy leader of the kumu, who is trying to undermine his boss, murders Chin and dumps him right in front of the Iolani Palace. A grief-stricken and enraged McGarrett confronts the kumu boss, who didn't know about the hit, and threatens a statewide crackdown. Meanwhile, the underboss gets busy eliminating possible witnesses to the hit. When confronted by his boss, he finally admits to the murder and pretends to leave the country to take off the heat -- but instead orders a hit on McGarrett himself.

Freeze, Nelson. Five-0.

But you've done nothing
but close down small-timers.

We want to divert
Kumu's attention

while we establish our
underground operation.

I don't talk to punks. I
want to see your boss.

He's not gonna talk to you.

My father always said that
you were the finest man.

I got him killed, Suzy.

I know what it means to lose a
friend, but I didn't kill anybody.

No, of course not.

If McGarrett's an
obstacle, I say, remove him.

Darling, don't stand me up.

We're not even
supposed to be doing this.

Excuse me.

Police, stay where you are.

You're all under arrest.

Soliciting, prostitution?

We're having nothing but a...

Freeze, Nelson. Five-0.

Williams, what
are you doing here?

I heard there was
gonna be a dance.

Five-0, you guys don't make
little dope busts no more.

Just like to keep my hand in.

Mr. Pahoa?

Jimmy.

Sit down.

Billy Swan said you
wanted to see me.

Rose, she called.

She got hit.

And so did two
card rooms in Hilo

and five or six numbers
banks here in Honolulu.

That's nothing.

I had a mule stopping over
between Bangkok and L.A.

He was carrying 10 kilos.

It's gone, like that.

Maui, Kauai, the Big Island.

We've lost almost all of our
good grass in the past month.

That stuff sold for $2,000
a pound in New York.

Jimmy, I know what we're losing.

What I want to know is,

why are they hitting
these little operations?

Maybe this cop McGarrett
wants to be governor.

Not McGarrett.

He's never wanted to
be anything but a cop.

An organization as big as
Kumu is not hard to infiltrate,

especially not with all
those haoles on the payroll.

Hey.

To be of the same blood
is no guarantee of loyalty.

No.

But if I had to trust someone,
he wouldn't be a haole.

Gentlemen, this is a very strong
letter addressed to my office

from the Justice Department.

It says, in essence,
that if we don't clean up

our own homegrown
crime syndicate, the Kumu,

the feds are gonna
step in and do it for us.

So you're going
after Pahoa himself?

That's right. The godfather.

But, Steve, Five-0's been
stepping on our toes recently,

making raids on our
jurisdiction without warning us.

That's exactly why I asked
for this meeting, gentlemen.

To explain to you that Five-0 is
taking the initiative against the Kumu

and to ask for your cooperation.

But you've done nothing
but close down small-timers.

We knew all about them.

They're open again the next day.

All part of the plan, Nick.

We want to divert
Kumu's attention

while we establish our
underground operation.

Can't you see that?

Can you give us details?

Not yet.

Not without endangering
our operative.

But I can tell you one thing.

Strike force will
be concentrated

in the downtown
Mona-kao Hotel Street area

where the shakedowns
are really taking place.

So you're the old man's
nephew from San Francisco, huh?

That's right.

Then you know why we're here.

He says he has all
the insurance he needs.

Not the kind we're selling.

Chinatown is the
same everywhere.

Punks selling protection.

I don't talk to punks. I
want to see your boss.

He's not gonna talk to you.

Then we won't be doing business.

I'll make a call.

Tell him to set
it up for tonight.

Okay, you keep an eye on
him. I'll go call Rego, all right?

I think we've found what
he's been looking for.

- McGarrett.
- Steve?

We hit the jackpot.

Oh, good work, Chin. Tell me.

I've got a meeting
set up for tonight.

Are you sure he's the one
behind the protection racket?

Well, he has to be.

Okay, but be careful.

For God's sake, be careful.

I can handle it.

Don't worry, Steve.

Well?

I called our boss.

He agrees that the
two of you should meet,

but he don't wanna
wait till tonight.

He wants to see you now.

It's nice to meet you.

There's not many people in
Chinatown would stand up to the boys.

I've been through this before.

Yeah.

Oh, that's right, you're
from the mainland.

Uh, San Francisco, wasn't it?

I had a restaurant,
just off Grant.

Really?

What was it called?
Maybe I ate there.

The Amoy Cafe.

I sold it a few years ago.

The Amoy, The Amoy... Ah.

Right next door to
Far East Exports?

That's right.

Ha, ha. That's wrong.

So I made a mistake.

Heh. Took us about
what, a week? Yeah.

But we made you.

Your name is Chin Ho Kelly.

From Hawaii Five-0.

Now, that... That was a mistake.

It was worth it.

I don't think I
have much to lose.

Chin is going to try to set up the
meeting in this area, gentlemen.

So study these maps carefully.

His life may depend on
how well we know them.

"The Civic Center, consists of
Hawaii's stately governor's mansion,

Washington place.

The architecturally imaginative
state capitol built in 1969,

Iolani Palace and grounds,
were the island's last..."

Oh, my God.

Come in.

I just phoned Chin's
daughter in San Francisco.

She'll be here for the funeral.

How did Suzy take it?

How would any daughter take it,
Danno, when you have to tell her

that her old man has
just been murdered?

It broke her heart.

I shouldn't have let
him go undercover.

He was too well-known.

Steve, don't blame yourself.

Chin wanted the job.

He was the only one who
could get any cooperation

with the Chinese community.

The tip about the new protection
racket came from one of Chin's snitches.

Yeah.

I should have had a
backup on him at all times.

It wouldn't have worked, Steve.

You know how suspicious
those Chinese merchants are.

One man alone had a chance.

Did he, Danno?

So help me, God,

I will not rest

until I get the man
who killed him.

Jimmy?

This, uh, cop that got dead,

what do you hear?

That Chinese cop
should have been with us.

Instead of trying to set our people
up with that haole cop McGarrett.

I think somebody did us a favor.

Some favor.

Chin Ho is not just
some traffic cop.

His boss, McGarrett, is
the head of Hawaii Five-0,

and he is a man to respect.

He will not easily accept the death
of one so close to him personally.

- What can one cop do?
- A lot.

Look at what he's doing already.

Hey, he knows the Kumu well.

Jimmy,

I want to keep a very low profile
until I see how McGarrett will react.

- You want me to spread the word?
- No.

Not necessary.

Our people will know, but...

You are new.

I wanted to have these words
with you personally, Jimmy.

Look, I appreciate
the thought but...

One more thing.

There is no way
to reach McGarrett.

Everybody has a price.

I said not McGarrett.

Are you two talking business?

- Never too busy for my baby.
- Ha, ha.

We're through, anyway.

- Are we still going to dinner?
- Mm-hm.

I was just gonna
come and find you.

Here I am.

Bye, Daddy.

Billy Swan.

I'm afraid we're going to have to
keep a close eye on that young man.

I can't tell you how deeply your
father's death has affected me.

Chin, the rest of my
guys, they're my family.

They're the only family I know.

I always thought of
you as one of our family.

My father always said that you
were the finest man he's ever met.

How ironic.

I got him killed, Suzy.

No, you didn't.

He knew it could
happen any time.

We all did.

My mother, when she died,

it was harder because
we weren't expecting it.

Steve, he prepared us for it.

He knew he
couldn't live forever.

I came out here to console you, ha,
ha, and you end up comforting me.

Iolani, what can you tell us
about the murder weapon?

Chin was killed with a
.22 caliber magnum load.

One shot was fired into
the base of the brain,

and the powder burns indicate that
the gun was held up against the head.

McGARRETT: The work of a pro.

Mm, no question.

McGARRETT: Danno?

What about the tourist couple?

It happened so quickly, uh...

All the woman remembers is there
were two dark-haired men in the car.

McGARRETT: Two dark-haired
men in Hawaii, that's a big help.

Duke, have you checked the
room Chin took in Chinatown?

Not yet.

But I contacted the old
man who owns the pool hall,

but he's too scared to talk.

McGARRETT: Stay on him.

He must have seen whoever
made the first contact.

Right, Steve.

This case goes far beyond
the fact that Chin was a friend.

If the syndicate can get away
with murdering... Murdering

one of the state's top
law-enforcement officers,

they're gonna think
they're invincible.

Now, this must
never happen. Never.

Sorry, Mr. Pahoa has
retired for the evening.

You tell Mr. Pahoa that
McGarrett wants to talk to him now.

Now, it's up to him whether
we do it here or downtown.

Billy Swan, let him in.

Mr. McGarrett, what a pleasure.

You killed my
friend, Chin Ho Kelly.

And that's the biggest
mistake you ever made.

I feel for you, McGarrett.

I know what it means to lose a
friend, but I didn't kill anybody.

No, of course not.

You didn't pull the trigger,
you're too smart for that.

As head of the syndicate, it could not
have happened without your approval.

And I'm flattered that you
think I do have such power.

But if I did, I certainly wouldn't
use it on one of your people.

That would be the
last thing I would do.

Oh, come on, let's
cut the bull, Pahoa.

If you claim you don't
know who did this

you can damn well
soon find out who did.

- Oh, you want me to help you?
- No.

I'm offering you the opportunity to
prove that you are the good citizen

you constantly claim to be.

I wish I were in a position to take
advantage of that, Mr. McGarrett,

but I cannot give you
something I do not have.

Then we're back
where we started from.

I have done nothing for
which you can touch me!

And if I might add, I have
friends in high places.

And so have I.

You know, Billy Swan,
he's wrong about one thing.

What's that, Mr. Pahoa?

Someone did pull that
trigger without my approval.

McGARRETT: About ten
years ago, a man named Pahoa

became the head
of the local syndicate,

Kumu, they call it,

because he was able to pull
all the ethnic groups together.

Hawaiians, Samoans,
Japanese and Koreans.

- How'd he do that?
- With hate.

The common ground of
all evil and ignorant people.

They all shared a common
hatred of the Caucasians.

They call them haoles down here.

But he was able to
promise enormous profits

in addition, and he delivered.

Did you know I went to school
with Cappy Pahoa's daughter, Kini?

No, I didn't.

Well, I had no idea
what her father really did.

Well, he was probably
more secretive in those days.

Well, whatever her father
is, she's still a good friend.

I hope so. When are you
going back to the mainland?

Not right away. I thought
I'd hang around for a while.

- Maybe I could help.
- Help?

Suzy, I know how
you feel, but please...

Please don't get involved.

Well, maybe if I talked to Kini I
would learn of something that may help.

Suzy, you're a smart
girl. Stay out of this.

Did you know she came to the
funeral with her new boyfriend

from San Francisco?

- Who is that?
- Jimmy Rego.

He's Hawaiian.

He was born on the Big Island,
but he grew up in San Francisco.

What part of San
Francisco? Do you know?

- No, but I can find out. Will that help?
- No, no.

Giving me his name
is all I need. Thank you.

- But, Steve...
- No buts about it, Suzy.

If you want me to
find your father's killer,

you cannot act like
an amateur detective.

We hear Cappy
wants to keep it quiet.

Don't worry about it.

Is he the one who
tipped that Chinese cop?

That's what we hear.

Well, go find out.

You said Saturday.

Relax, we're not
here about the money.

Then why did you come?

We want to know who was talking
to that haole-loving Chinese cop.

Hey, cops?

I don't know anything
about any cops.

If you do, you're gonna
tell us about it, right?

Sure. I'll call you right up.

Now, please go. I
don't want you here.

Okay, we'll go.

You remember, we'll
be back, Saturday.

I think he's the one. Come on.

It's from Chin. We turned
the room upside down.

This is the only possibility.

Yeah. I see what you mean.

Chin might have left
us a clue, after all.

There are five names altogether.

All of them are
merchants in Chinatown.

Well, one of them may be
the answer we're looking for.

- Check them out.
- Sure will.

Good work.

Lani? LANI: Yes, sir?

Have we heard from the
Justice Department strike force

in San Francisco yet?

Not yet, Mr. McGarrett.

- Do you want me to try again?
- Yes, please.

Tell them it's a
priority request.

We want everything they have
on one James or Jimmy Rego,

or Rego, R-E-G-O.

- Yes, sir.
- Thank you.

I was afraid. I'm still afraid.

As we all are.

Only, Chin overcame his fear
to try and help people like you.

You want Chin
to die for nothing?

No, but...

Okay, we can't
force you to talk.

Even if we could, we wouldn't.

Wait.

Yeah?

Yung Sen does not
honor his ancestors.

I have no courage.

I am ashamed.

Don't be.

I never came to you
as I know I should have.

Two men have been taking
money from the merchants.

Did you tell Chin this?

Saturday, they will come
to collect their money.

I will show you who they are.

Is that Yung Sen?

Yes, and two of
his kitchen helpers.

It's crazy, Steve. It seems like
they know every move we make.

Yeah, it's diabolic.

Central calling McGarrett.

Central to McGarrett.

Yeah, McGarrett. Go ahead.

- Hold for Danny Williams.
- Holding.

- Steve? McGARRETT:
What have you got?

The sheet on Rego just
came in over the telex.

- He's got a lot of experience.
- What's the bottom line?

Six arrests, one conviction.

For running a protection racket
in San Francisco's Chinatown.

Well, well.

Okay, Danno, have
H.P.D. pick him up.

I want him in the office
when I get back, if not sooner.

Okay, what's this all about?

Murder.

Murders, to be exact.

I don't know anything
about any murders.

- No?
- Mm-mm.

Where were you, uh, last
Thursday at about 4 p.m.?

Uh, last Thursday afternoon,
I was in a business meeting.

- Everybody saw you there, of course.
- Oh, hell, yes.

I was running the meeting.

And where were you
today at 3, let's say?

Come on, you know where
I was. I was playing tennis.

You had your monkeys
drag me off the court.

Oh, that's tough.

I'm sorry if I
spoiled your game.

I've been reading
a lot about you.

You're a big man in San
Francisco, aren't you?

Why didn't you stay there?

Well, I got homesick.

See, I was born in the islands.

And then you met
Cappy Pahoa's daughter?

So? We're gonna get married.

You better do it soon,

or she's gonna have a long
wait for you to get out of prison.

Listen, cop, don't
make any threats, okay?

You listen.

Don't you ever call me "cop."

The name is McGarrett,
and the title is mister.

Now, I have a strong hunch

that you're responsible for the
murder of my friend Chin Ho Kelly

and those poor
restaurant people.

And I'm gonna prove that.

Now, that's not a
threat, that's a promise.

I'm scared to death.

Listen.

If you want, we can settle
this between the two of us.

Oh, don't tempt me.

That's right.

Hide behind your badge.

Danno?

Come in here, and get
this gentleman out of here

before I forget my manners.

Steve, good news.

Oh, boy, I don't know when
I've needed it more, Duke.

What have you got?

Well, one of the waitresses
at Yung Sen's remembered

a delivery truck out in the
alley just before the explosion.

Yeah?

It was from Hawaiian
Restaurant Supply.

That's Pahoa's outfit.

You bet.

Would Pahoa be dumb enough to
use one of his own trucks on a hit?

No, but it sure gives us a
reason to turn Kumu inside out.

Okay, line them up.

Let's go, in the wagon.

Thank you.

What were you doing out there?

I heard that the
fights were very good.

You know, McGarrett, I
grew up in a camp like that.

I was looking for your
rap sheet the other day.

Not even a parking ticket.

You're a model
citizen, aren't you?

And until you became involved with
this Hawaiian Native Claims Movement,

your name wasn't even
in the paper, how come?

Yes, I'm a very simple
man, and I lead a quiet life.

Until now.

I'm gonna see that this
bust is very well publicized.

I'm sure you will.

When can I see my lawyer?

Pahoa, three more men are dead.

Now, I have reason to believe that
your new boy, Jimmy Rego, is behind this.

Jimmy? Are you
kidding, McGarrett?

He runs a couple of restaurants.

He ran a protection racket in
San Francisco's Chinatown,

the same thing he's
trying to do here.

Well, I can't believe you,
but say you were right,

what does this
have to do with me?

He cannot operate without
the syndicate's approval.

Oh, pardon me, without
Kumu's approval, and you know it.

I don't know what
you're talking about.

I want him, Pahoa.

I want him.

Well, he's not
mine to give away.

Okay, now these raids
that we've just pulled,

that's just the beginning.

From now on, Kumu is
Five-0's main target in all areas,

and you're gonna
be my personal target.

For openers, I'm impounding all
of your Hawaiian supply trucks,

all of them.

- No, you can't do that.
- I can't?

One of them was used
in these recent killings.

None of them will roll until I find out
which one, and that could take months.

Think about it. Officer?

You know you're very good?

I do a lot of swimming
to keep in shape.

Oh, yeah? What do
you keep it in shape for?

- For whatever, whoever.
- Ha, ha.

Say, look, why don't you
guys go up to my apartment

change, fix your hair, and
we'll all go get something to eat.

I wouldn't wanna be a fifth
wheel. You don't have to.

I know we don't
have to, we want to.

Oh, please, Suzy, I can
be alone with him anytime,

and I haven't seen
you in five years.

Well, if you're sure, I'll...

- Come on, let's go change.
- Okay.

Ah-ah.

Hey, Rego, he wants to see you.

- Where?
- This way.

Cappy, how are you doing?

Sit.

I just came from jail.

First time in my life.

I'm in jail because
of you, Jimmy.

What did I do, Cappy?

- I don't...
- Enough.

Billy Swan saw you
at that restaurant

with those two punks you
brought from the mainland.

Another time, he saw
them blow up the place.

They used one of
my company trucks.

Cappy, I swear, I had
nothing to do with that hit.

- I don't even...
- I warned you to back off.

I warned you personally.

And I did all this
because of Kini.

Now stop lying.

Okay.

I wasted that Chinese cop.

To give those people in
Chinatown an example.

Now they all pay, on time.

You ought to try the
same thing, Cappy.

Show some strength.

There is no place in Kumu
for hotheads and fools.

Someday maybe
Kumu will be so strong

that not even
McGarrett can get us.

But for now, we will
stay away from him.

If McGarrett's an
obstacle, I say remove him.

Jimmy, I've been planning
a trip for Kini to Europe

for a long time.

You will leave
with her tomorrow.

You just want me
out of the way, huh?

- I won't go.
- Yes, you will.

I want you out of
McGarrett's way.

Jimmy boy, you have a choice.

You can go first class 747.

Or in an oil drum in the
hold of some freighter.

- What are you doing?
- Ah!

Huh?

I said what are you doing here?

Looking for a towel for Kini.

Ah.

Well, you came
to the right place.

So, uh, how long
are you staying?

Just a few days.

Yeah, well, we'll miss you.

Well, I'll be sorry to leave.

Hey, come on,
you guys, let's go.

I made a reservation.

Okay.

Hey, Suzy?

Look, I'm sorry if I scared you.

That's okay.

Why would they dump the truck?

Why not just let it
disappear back into the fleet?

Somebody might be more afraid of
Kumu than they are of the law, Danno.

Or maybe Pahoa wanted us to find it
so you'd release the rest of his trucks.

Interesting possibility, yeah.

Lab found several sets of fresh
prints on the steering wheel, Steve.

- It'll take a while to check them out.
- Okay.

Meanwhile, check with the bakery
who made those fortune cookies.

See if anyone remembers
who picked up the order that day.

Danno, let's go. Nothing
for us to do around here.

Somebody's following
us, Danno. Take a look.

I think you're right, Steve.

Danno, duck!

Get up against there.

Get up against that car.

All right, come on,
let's get out of here.

Steve, Danny told me
what happened to you.

I just wanted to be
sure if you're okay.

Yeah, I'm okay, honey.

But you take a lesson from this.

These syndicate
people play for keeps.

Oh, I'm not doing
anything dangerous.

I've seen Kini a few
times, but that's it.

What about Rego?
Have you seen him?

I told you, I met him
only once at the funeral.

You're sure?

- Steve?
- Yeah, Danno?

Hi, Suzy.

Their names are Kimo Napali and
Brian Liu. Their prints were on the van.

They have long records
here and on the mainland.

- San Francisco?
- Right.

Oh, boy, it's interesting.

Excuse me.

McGarrett.

Yes, Iolani? What have you got?

Are you sure?

Good, good. Thank you.

That's good police work.

The lab found traces
of the explosive

that killed Yung Sen
in the trunk of the car

that Napali and Liu were
driving when they tried to blast us.

Steve, the bakery
made a positive ID.

Liu picked up the
order of fortune cookies.

- It's all coming together.
- But it's all circumstantial, Danno.

All circumstantial.

Duke, I want you there when
they search Napali and Liu's room.

Tear that place apart. We
need the gun that killed Chin.

Danno, get Napali and
Liu up here from H.P.D.

Tell them that we want
separate interrogation rooms.

I doubt if they'll
talk, but I'd like to try.

Bye, Suzy. We've got work to do.

Kini, I swear, it wasn't me.

I believe you, Jimmy.

But Daddy's got everybody
looking for you. Why?

He thinks I disobeyed him.

Now look, you're gonna have
to talk to your father for me, huh?

Make him understand,
honey. He'll listen to you.

Oh, I don't know.

Honey, you know how
much I love you, huh?

I want you to come away with me.

But we need your father's help.

I'll try.

Where can I call you?

Well, I'm gonna stop at the
apartment first and pick up some money,

And then I'll be at the house, on
North Shore, you know the one.

I'll call you there.

Baby?

Don't let me down, huh?

This is our future right now.

Damn.

Daddy, I love him.

I warned him,
he wouldn't listen.

I never asked you for much.

You've been an angel.

I want to go with him.

We'll go wherever you say.

You know that

I would seem weak
to the rest of the Kumu.

No, you'd seem strong.

Only a weak man
can show no mercy.

You taught me that yourself.

- Papa?
- Hmm?

I'm going with him
wherever he goes.

All right.

Where can I find him?

You'll help us?

I'll send him to San Francisco
and you can meet him.

No, I want to go with him now.

It has to be this way.

Where can I find him?

Um, a little house
on the North Shore.

Jimmy rented it so that
we could be together.

Um, 102 Nahama,
just off the highway.

Oh, thank you, Daddy.

- Any messages?
- Steve.

You were right,
Liu wouldn't crack.

Neither would Napali.
There's got to be something.

What about Rego's gun?

Mm.

Okay.

Okay, Steve, take a look.

Yeah, they look like
identical twins to me.

That was definitely
the murder weapon.

With Rego's prints all over it.

I'd say we've got a case.

We've got a case?

Well, you keep on
trying, don't you?

Well, your father was persistent,
not a bad quality for a detective.

I've been expecting
you, Mr. McGarrett.

I want Rego, and I want him now.

I want you to have him.

You do? Why?

I want him out of the way, and
it's better that you do it than me.

I see. So now you're playing
the concerned citizen, huh?

Let's just say we're
doing each other a favor.

All right, where is he?

It's all here, even a map.

Honor among thieves, huh?

Watch your language,
McGarrett, or I'll sue you.

He'll probably come out
with some wild statements

about me and some other people,
but don't pay any attention to him.

None of it will
stand up in court.

You're probably right.

But one day, I'm
gonna get you, Pahoa,

and those friends of
yours in high places.

Perhaps.

One day, we'll meet again.

Meet is not what I had in mind.

Suzy, you stay here.

- Steve...
- Stay here.

Danno, get the back.

Get the back.

Hold it.

- Put the gun down.
- Okay.

I've been waiting a long
time for this, Rego. Drop it.

You make one move
and I'll blow your head off.

Put it down, now.

- Okay.
- I quit.

Weren't you the guy
who wanted to settle this,

just between the two of us, huh?

Oh, God, don't, please.

- Would Chin have groveled like that?
- No, no.

Look down that barrel.

Look right down that
barrel. How does it look?

- No.
- It's what Chin saw.

- No, wait.
- How does it feel, huh?

Please! Oh, God, please, please.

Please, please.

Danno, hold it a minute.

I want to book this one.

I think Chin
would've liked that.

Let's go.

Come on, get up.
