Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 10, Episode 15 - The Silk Trap - full transcript

John Richard Carr, a rising member of the House of Representatives, is visiting Hawaii to judge a beauty pageant. He has a tryst with one of the contestants, who drugs him so that Carr can be filmed in her company, in order to blackmail Carr into ending his bribery investigation of a prominent Malaysian. But the woman who helps the blackmailer drug Congressman Carr is herself murdered by the blackmailer's henchmen - so that Congressman Carr is not just implicated in an infidelity scandal, but becomes a murder suspect.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

And now for the finals in
the swimsuit competition.

Representing the
Malaysian Federation,

Miss Jane Kuan.

Just about the right
size for a camera lens.

Sure is.

I think you're
being blackmailed.

And I think I know why.

Mm. Can I make us a drink?

Sure.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

Thank you. Good evening.

Just a week ago...
Just a week ago today,

the pageant opened
with 82 Pacific beauties

brought here as guests of
the Honolulu Visitors Bureau.

And now, here they
are, our 12 finalists.

One dozen perfect roses.

[APPLAUSE]

Judges, I don't know
how you're gonna do it.

Our judges represent
many parts of the Pacific,

including South Korea, Japan,
the Philippines, of course Hawaii,

and from the mainland, U.S.
Congressman John Richard Carr.

The knight in
shining armor, huh?

Think he has a crack
at the White House?

He can give Teddy
a run for it in 1984.

KENO: Thank you,
if you exit the stage,

we'll call you
back one at a time.

[BRASS FANFARE PLAYS]

And now for the finals in
the swimsuit competition.

Our first contestant, from
Australia, Miss Shelby Norton.

[JAZZ MUSIC PLAYING]

Representing the
Malaysian Federation,

Miss Jane Kuan.

CARR: Hi.
- Hi.

One hundred percent pure
silk. There's nothing like it.

Makes me feel so rich.

It was a beautiful gift.

Mm. Can I make us a drink?

Sure.

You know you're a
very beautiful girl?

Did you have any
trouble getting out?

Uh, no, someone's
covering for me.

Thanks.

Put that down.

CHUNG: He's almost out now.

Do it.

[KNOCK ON DOOR]

- Who are you? Where's
Mr. Chung? OTIS: He couldn't make it.

- His glass? JANE: Yes.

Hey, relax. Relax.

So far you've given
a great performance.

What do you mean, "so far"?

- No.
- We'll show you.

JANE: What are you doing?

No. What are you
doing? Let me go.

[JANE SCREAMING]

OFFICER: Excuse me, sir.

- Danno, what do we got?
- Not much, I'm afraid.

H.P.D. got the
call just after 4 a.m.

Took a while to
identify the girl.

They called the Visitors
Bureau, who called us

and the pageant director.

- Who's the pageant director?
- A Miss, uh, Andrea King.

- "Ms." Danno, "ms."
- Oh, sorry, Steve.

What's the girl doing
here? Meeting someone?

Yeah, it looks that way.

Looks like she had a new dress
for the occasion, box is over there.

No evidence of, uh,
violence or forcible entry.

Could be she just took
a dive or maybe just fell.

- How did she get in?
- H.P.D. found a key in her purse.

You mean the girl
rented this room?

Duke and Chin are
checking on that now, Steve.

They're also interviewing the night
staff to see if someone came in with her.

Call the coroner, Danno.

Uh, get the results of that
autopsy as soon as possible.

I wanna know exactly
how much alcohol

the girl had in her system.

Right.

I'm the head of the
pageant. I have to get in here.

DANNY: May I help you?
- If you're Mr. McGarrett you can.

Jane Kuan was one of my girls.

McGARRETT: All right, Danno.

You must be Andrea King.

Yes, that's right.

What can I do for you, Ms. King?

You can stop being patronizing
and tell me what's being done.

Oh, I didn't mean
to be condescending.

I was just using a term
women-libbers seem to prefer.

Hmm.

[SCOFFS]

My God.

How could this have
happened to one of my girls?

You realize there could be
international consequences.

Jane was a guest in your state.

Yes, I understand that.

Now, maybe you can help us.

Have you any idea what the
girl was doing in this room?

I'm sure she was kidnapped.

Kidnapped? What
makes you say that?

Maybe she wanted to be here.

Maybe she just slipped
out to meet someone.

My girls are
carefully chaperoned.

We don't permit contact with
anyone outside this pageant.

They're kept very busy.

There's no time for
distractions of any kind.

I know you try, Miss King,

but you don't really
believe that, do you?

You're one of those people
that think beauty contests

are some kind of
a joke, aren't you?

Where did you get that idea?

- Your attitude.
- Oh.

Well, let me assure
you, Mr. McGarrett,

that the Pacific
Islands Beauty Pageant

is not a joke to
these girls, nor to me.

Do you have any idea
what a responsibility it is

to look after 82
girls for two weeks?

Enormous, I'm sure, and
I appreciate your position,

but I'm dealing with death here.

Not the swimsuit event.

I won this contest 11 years
ago and I have been associated

with one beauty pageant
or another ever since.

I've seen a lot, but
never anything like this.

I have to go to my office
now and call Jane's parents.

What do I tell them?

[PHONE RINGING]

- Yeah.
- Turn on your TV.

- Channel 9.
- What?

Just do it. And don't
hang up the phone.

[GROANS]

WOMAN [ON TV]: She's been
identified as Jane Kuan, 19,

of Jakarta in the
Malaysian Federation.

Miss Kuan was in
Honolulu as a contestant

in the Miss Pacific
Islands Beauty Contest.

When asked if her fall was
accidental or if foul play is suspected,

Steve McGarrett of Hawaii
Five-0 declined comment.

Meanwhile, a three-car crash
on Kamehameha Highway

has injured six persons
and snarled traffic for miles.

They say one car driven by a man
careened into the highway lanes

going in the opposite direction.

Who is this?

- A friend.
- What do you want, friend?

Meet me at the east
end of Kapiolani Park

in 20 minutes,
and I'll tell you.

Listen... [PHONE CLICKS]

WOMAN [ON TV]: Negotiators
met for six nonstop hours

and report no progress.

I must have been drugged. I...

I can't remember anything.

The mind has a way of blocking
things that are too painful to remember.

Look, I'm sure it
was an accident.

- You didn't mean for her to fall...
- What do you want?

How much?

No money.

I want a favor.

You're one of
group of individuals

who are persecuting
a good friend of mine.

I see.

And would that friend happen to
be a certain Malaysian businessman

who's currently under
investigation by my subcommittee?

Mr. Wing Tai Lee?

As a chairman of
the subcommittee,

it will be a simple matter for you
to de-emphasize Mr. Lee's role

in any possible wrongdoing.

You think it would, do you?

After I initiated
that investigation?

You are said to be a genius,
Mr. Carr. I'm sure you will find a way.

And if I can't do
you this favor?

After all, it's my word against yours
that I was ever in that hotel room.

You have excellent taste
in women and in clothes.

I'm only a chaperone
when we're doing a pageant.

The rest of the time I travel
with Andrea as her secretary.

But you were Jane
Kuan's chaperone?

I'm afraid I didn't
do a very good job.

How do you think she got out?

She must have slipped out
while I went to do Andrea's letters.

I made my last bed check at 11.

Some of the girls told me they
received a lot of calls from different men.

Did Jane Kuan ever receive
any calls that you know of?

There was a rumor, and
that's probably all it was.

What was that?

Oh, some of the
girls were saying

that Congressman
Carr had called Jane.

I'm sure it was just talk.

Congressman Carr wouldn't
call Jane. He's one of our judges.

Oh, yeah. You can
bet I'd remember her.

She was, uh, something else.

- Well? Was she alone?
- I'm afraid so.

At the time I thought,

"Gee, what a waste for a
girl like that to be alone."

But do you remember anything
unusual that happened last night?

It was pretty quiet.
Uh... No, wait.

That congressman,
John Richard Carr?

- Came in last night, a little before 1.
- Oh?

- Is he staying here?
- No, he's not.

Ever seen him here before?

No, but then, an awful lot of
people come and go around here.

Okay.

If you remember anything
else, call us at Five-0.

Oh, sure.

A lot of very attractive
men try to call us.

Send us flowers with notes in
them asking us to meet them.

And do you meet them?

Sometimes.

But I thought you girls
all had chaperones.

We're all grown women.

If one of us wants to be with a man,
no chaperone is going to stop us.

No, I, uh... I guess not.

Yeah, Duke. What do you got?

Chin's at the hotel, but I
wanted to bring you up to date.

- Go.
- Well, for starters,

the name on the reservation,
Toshiro Yamoto, was a phony.

Ha, ha. That figures.

Looks like the room was
rented but never used.

Housekeeping said
the bed never was used.

There were no room service,
phone or restaurant charges.

What about the dress
box we found in the room?

It came from a shop
in the hotel mall.

Chin's checking it out.

I'd be interested to know

whether it was a
regular purchase or a gift.

- Steve.
- Yeah, Danno?

Seems all those girls have
plenty of chance to get out

and plenty of offers.

In fact, I even heard a
rumor that Congressman Carr

called Jane Kuan.

That's interesting.

- Is he traveling alone?
- Yeah.

Steve,

I never thought much of it at the time,
but we talked to one of the bellboys.

Guess who went into the hotel
last night, just before 1 a.m.

Congressman John Richard Carr.

MAN 1: Here he comes.

MAN 2: Can we get a moment?
MAN 3: Just a moment, sir.

CARR: Gentlemen, ladies.

Congressman Carr, what
do you think of the pageant?

It's a great attraction for Honolulu. I
can't think of a better place to hold it.

What do you think of the girls?

Ah. What do I
think of the girls?

If it were up to me, I'd declare
an 82-way tie for first place.

- They're beautiful, all of them.
- Congressman.

What's new in the Wing
Tai Lee investigation?

David Chung, Singapore Times.

Would you care to comment
on Wing Tai Lee matter?

No, not at this time.
Excuse me, please.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

Our next contestant
in the talent division

is Miss Australia,
Shelby Norton.

[PLAYING FRANK
SINATRA'S "MEDITATION"]

[SINGING] In my loneliness

When you're gone
And I'm all by myself

Congressman.

I'm McGarrett, Hawaii
Five-0 State Police.

May I speak to you privately?

Certainly. Why don't we,
uh, step into the lobby?

And the thought of
you Holding me near

Makes this loneliness
Soon disappear

A contestant in the pageant
died in a fall last night.

Mm-hm.

We're investigating the possibility
that it may not have been an accident.

Sorry, I don't, uh, see
what this has to do with me.

Mind telling me where you were

between, oh, say, midnight
and 4 a.m. this morning?

Yes, I would mind.

A bellboy at the hotel
where Jane Kuan died

saw you arrive there
shortly before 1 a.m.

Mr. McGarrett, I had a
private meeting with someone

who has information relating to
the work I'm doing in Congress.

That's all I'm at
liberty to say right now.

It's, uh, privileged
information.

Congressman, I'm conducting
a murder investigation.

Now, we can do this privately or
down at my office at Iolani Palace,

if you don't mind the publicity.

Listen, what I
know about the girl

is what I saw when she
walked up and down the ramp.

Oh? I understand
that you called her.

[CHUCKLES]

So that's it.

Mr. McGarrett,
I'm married to, uh...

A beautiful woman. Have
been for nearly, oh, nine years.

When I'm away from home like
this, uh, women call me constantly.

Now, if I weren't happily married,
all I have to do is return those calls.

Why would I risk
calling a 19-year-old girl

in a public situation like this?

- So she called you?
- That's right.

- I'd, uh, better get back inside.
- Sure, congressman.

That'll be all for now, but I
will want to talk to you again.

Good, any time. You'll, uh...
You'll know where to find me.

McGARRETT [OVER PHONE]:
Jonathan, what I'd like to know is

just how important is
Congressman John Richard Carr?

He's very important.

Could he be having secret
meetings here in Hawaii, perhaps?

Possibly. He chairs
a house committee

that's investigating a possible
bribery scandal in Congress.

I see.

KAYE: Someone has
been trying to buy decisions

favorable to the
Malaysian Federation.

Scuttlebutt has it that
they're just about to indict,

in absentia of course, a
man named Wing Tai Lee.

Oh, yeah, Wing Tai
Lee, the Tiger of Sumatra.

Wasn't he the guerilla leader,

the warlord of sorts
that gave the Japanese

such a fit during World War II?

Yeah. Now, Steve,

I know that I cannot tell
you how to do your job.

But unless you're absolutely sure
that Carr is involved in that girl's death,

I'd appreciate it if you
could keep him out of it.

This is the kind of thing

that could put an end
to a promising career.

Just like a 12-story fall can put an
end to a promising young life, Jonathan?

If the man is innocent, you
can count on my discretion,

but if he's guilty, I'm
gonna nail him to the wall.

Well, that gives him a fair
shake. That's all I can ask.

- Thank you, Steve.
- Have a good day.

DANNY: Steve.
- Yeah, Danno?

The lab just called. The
autopsy report on Jane Kuan

showed almost no
alcohol in her system.

That's interesting.

Something more interesting,
all the glasses were wiped clean,

but the coroner found traces of
a highly concentrated sedative

on the first finger
of her right hand.

So our unknown guest could have
had more than ice in his Scotch, huh?

Yeah.

Danno, I just got off the
phone with Jonathan Kaye.

He told me some
very interesting things

about Congressman
John Richard Carr.

Such as?

Such as in spite of the fact

that he claims to be a
happily married man,

he has the reputation of
being somewhat of a player

around Washington's
party circuit.

Maybe he returned some of
those women's calls after all.

- Or makes his own.
- Maybe.

But being unfaithful is a long
way from being a murderer.

Nevertheless, I wanna
loose tail put on Carr.

Have Duke and Chin
handle it themselves.

And, Danno, I want
everyone to remember

that Carr is innocent
until we can prove guilt.

I don't want any mistakes here.

We could end up doing
an awful lot of harm.

Miss Bauer? May I
speak to you please?

Did you notice anything
unusual that happened that night?

Someone in the hall, perhaps,
that looked out of place?

No, it was quiet.

I made my bed check
a little after 11 as usual,

then Andrea had some
letters for me to type.

So no one was watching the
girls after you made your rounds?

I was only gone for 20 minutes.
I brought the work to my room.

No one checked on
the girls after that?

I didn't think there
was any reason.

Mr. McGarrett, they're
good girls, all of them.

If it just hadn't been
for those letters...

Do you often do secretarial
work late at night?

Yes, sometimes.

The letters weren't that important.
They could have waited until morning.

Karen.

You're supposed to
be supervising our girls,

not socializing
with Mr. McGarrett.

She's not
socializing, Miss King.

If there's anyone
at fault, it's me.

Would you mind
getting back on the job?

I'm sorry if I caused
you any embarrassment.

You and your people are
disrupting our entire pageant.

Really?

You may not be aware of it,

but I'm investigating
a murder charge here.

Don't you feel some
sort of obligation

to find out what
happened to Jane Kuan?

I feel an equal obligation
to the other contestants.

I appreciate that,

but there are questions
that have to be asked.

- In fact, I have one now.
- Oh?

I understand that you called
Miss Bauer away from her room

that night to give her some
letters that had to be typed?

Yes, that's right.

Well, couldn't they
have waited till morning?

- Was that her opinion?
- I didn't say that.

I was just wondering
why you called her away

at that particular time.

Because that was when I had
the letters ready to be typed.

Oh, I see.

You know, Karen was right.

The letters could have
waited until morning.

I'm sorry, Mr. McGarrett.

This whole thing has
us all terribly upset.

Yeah, I can understand that.

But there will be other questions,
Miss King, I can assure you.

Of course.

- I'll do anything I can to help you.
- Thank you.

[KNOCK ON DOOR]

CARR: Kate.
- May I come in?

Yeah, certainly.

Well, this is a surprise. I
thought you couldn't make it.

Well, something came
up that changed my mind.

What?

This.

I'll explain.

I knew you'd say that.

I'm ready. Explain.

- Kate, I'm in a lot of trouble.
- I'd say you are.

This girl is dead.

The same night the
photograph was taken.

Oh, my God.

They have

movies of us together.

And now you're
being blackmailed.

[PHONE RINGING]

As you can see, congressman,

I will do almost
anything to convince you.

Yes.

- I'll do whatever you say.
- Good.

Meet me at 9 in the morning,
the same place as before.

I have some new
evidence for you.

Jack, I need to know.

You didn't kill
that girl, did you?

I don't know, Kate.

[SIGHS]

I really don't know.

DANNY: Look at this, Steve.

How did they find it?

The lab boys found bits of plaster
and sawdust along the baseboard.

Here, let me show you.

Just about the right
size for a camera lens.

Sure is.

They must have replaced
the picture on the other side

with a two-way mirror.

Was this room also rented
by this mysterious Oriental?

No, it was rented
by a woman, Steve.

Caucasian.

- We're working on her description.
- Good.

See what you can find
out about Andrea King

and her secretary, Karen Bauer.

- Something's just not right.
- I'll get on it.

- What about Duke and Chin?
- They're still trailing Carr.

Chung?

- Beautiful morning, isn't it?
- Save it.

What do you want me to do?

Call a press conference.

Announce that you were
in error about Mr. Lee.

Based on what?

You've been having secret
meetings here in the islands.

You have discovered new
information which clears him.

What information?

The new evidence
I was talking about.

As you can see,

that is proof that another
Malaysian businessman

actually attempted to
bribe your congressman.

He'd have to testify.
Where is this, uh,

Martin Hokama now?

Unfortunately, Mr. Hokama
has recently died.

Heart attack.

I see.

This isn't much.

With your reputation,
that should be plenty.

If you announce that
this clears Mr. Lee

as far as you're concerned,

then in the eyes of most
of the world, he is cleared.

And what about Jane?

Did I kill her?

I have to know.

When Mr. Lee's vindicated,
you will receive the film.

And you can see for yourself.

Yes, governor, I'll get the
information and get back to you soon.

Yes, sir.

Here's the information you wanted
on Andrea King and, uh, Karen Bauer.

- Anything interesting?
- Not on Karen Bauer.

Never married, a
college graduate.

Worked at secretarial
jobs all her life.

Been with Andrea
King a long time.

Looks like one of
the quiet ones, Steve.

Yeah, but Andrea
King is another matter.

Isn't she though?

So she was in the same
Washington party circles

as Congressman
John Richard Carr.

Oh.

And our elusive
friend, Wing Tai Lee.

[INTERCOM BUZZES]

- Yes, Lani? LANI:
Duke's on line three.

- Go ahead. DUKE
[OVER INTERCOM]: Steve.

I'm at the Convention Center.

- Chin and I were tailing Carr.
- Yes?

He met a man, an
Oriental, in Kapiolani Park.

We couldn't hear them,

but the man handed Carr
an envelope full of papers.

- Are you still with Carr?
- Chin is. I followed the other one.

Does he have something to
do with the beauty pageant?

He's one of the working
press. His name is David Chung.

He's here representing a news
syndicate based in Singapore.

Singapore?

Which is right next to
the Malaysian Federation.

- Good work, Duke. Stay with him.
- Right, Steve.

Danno, what
would you like to bet

that David Chung is the Oriental

who rents hotel rooms
and never uses them.

I could have H.P.D.
take a picture of him

with a long lens and
show it to the hotel people.

Yeah, do it.

I thought you
were following Carr.

Oh, I did. Back to his
hotel. H.P.D. is watching.

That gave me a chance to check
on who bought that new dress

for the dead girl.

- Guess who.
- Tell me.

Congressman John Richard Carr.

In person.

[INTERCOM BUZZES]

- Yes, Lani. LANI:
Mr. McGarrett,

I thought you'd wanna know.
It just came over the radio

Congressman Carr has scheduled
a press conference for 6 p.m.

at the Convention Center.

Thank you, Lani.

And you said Congressman
Carr is at his hotel room now?

- Yeah.
- Thank you, Chin.

[RINGS]

- Yeah?
- I have another job for you.

[KNOCK ON DOOR]

Congressman, may I come in?

Mr. McGarrett, I, uh, really don't
have time to talk to you right now.

What I have to say is
much too important to wait.

Sit down.

My wife, she flew in yesterday.

She's down walking on the beach.

Look, um, could
we get on with this?

I understand that you're having
a press conference at 6:00.

Do you intend to discuss the
Wing Tai Lee bribery scandal?

That's right.

How did you know?

I make it my business to know
about a lot of things, congressman.

For instance?

For instance,

I think you're being blackmailed,
and I think I know why.

And I think you're fishing.

Very well.

Less than two hours ago, you
met with a man in Kapiolani Park.

A man by the name
of David Chung.

He gave you an envelope
with some papers in it.

You had me followed.
You can't do that.

That's an invasion of
privacy. I know the law.

So do I, congressman.

You're a suspect in a
murder investigation.

Now, we have you placed at
the hotel the night the girl died.

We also know that you
bought the dress that she wore.

Now, would you like
to discuss the law?

McGarrett, you know
what's at stake here?

I'm not talking about my career.

[SIGHS]

Yes.

- Does your wife know?
- Yes.

They sent her a photograph
of the girl and me.

I've told Kate everything.

She's gonna stand by me.

I don't deserve that.

You're a lucky man.

Now, would you like to
tell me what happened?

- I really don't know.
- Oh, come on, congressman.

That's the truth. I
went to see Jane and...

How did it start, this
affair between you?

She called me a few times,

then when I saw her
at the, uh, contest,

[CHUCKLES]

I decided to call her back.

We got together a
couple of times before.

I must have had too
much to drink that night,

because I remember being
with her and the next thing,

I woke up in my hotel room.

I don't know what happened.

Maybe I did kill her.

I don't know.

[CHUCKLES]

That would explain
the traces of sedative

the coroner found
on the girl's finger.

You were drugged, congressman.

Go on, won't you?

Go on.

The next thing, I was
contacted by this Chung.

They have films of the two of
us together in the hotel room.

Classic setup. Classic.

And in exchange for the
film, they want you to back off

on your investigation
of Wing Tai Lee.

There's only one problem.

They can make a duplicate
negative and as many positive prints

as they wish before they
turn the film back to you

and go on blackmailing
you for the rest of your life.

Now, if you help us get Chung,

it will considerably strengthen
our case against Lee.

For someone else to prosecute.

I'll do what I can, congressman.

But you realize a lot
is sure to come out.

It's my mistake.
I'll face up to it.

I can't condone what you've done,
congressman, but I can understand it.

I'm not sure that a lot
of men could resist a girl

as attractive and
available as Jane Kuan.

Point is not many men,
it's congressmen, senators.

We're supposed
to be a cut above.

Well,

in our society things aren't always
the way they're supposed to be.

- What do you want me to do?
- Go on with your press conference.

By then we should
have things well along.

I'm going to pick up
David Chung right away.

Good luck.

Thank you.

[PHONE RINGS]

Yes?

- Jack?
- Kate.

- Jack?
- Wha...?

- What's wrong?
- I've been kidnapped.

They're going to kill me if
you don't do what they say.

Please...

You do admit that you
know Congressman Carr.

CHUNG: Yes, of course.

And you met him in Kapiolani Park
this morning at approximately 9 a.m.

I didn't go there to meet him.

We happened to be
there at the same time.

I see.

You were seen giving
him an envelope.

What was in it?

Clippings of stories
about his investigation

into Wing Tai Lee affairs
in Washington, D.C.

Just clippings?

Not false evidence that
you wanted him to use

to clear your friend Lee?

[CHUCKLES]

Certainly not.

You were blackmailing
him, Mr. Chung.

You took motion pictures
of him and Jane Kuan

in a compromising
situation, didn't you?

That's all a lie.

- Who would say such a thing?
- Who? Let me show you.

Come in please.

Congressman, is this the man
who'd been blackmailing you?

Congressman, is this he?

No.

I know this man. His
name is David Chung.

He's a reporter.

Why are you saying this?

What are you doing?

You know that we have no
case without your corroboration.

That's right, there's no case.

My God, what are
you doing to me?

Uh, is there anything
else, Mr. McGarrett?

No, you can go.

But I wanna speak
with the congressman.

Why? Why? For God's sake, why?

I've changed my mind.

Just like that and you've
changed your mind?

You're gonna let him get away
with it. Well, I'm not gonna keep quiet.

Yes, well, all you
know is what I told you.

It'll be your word
against mine, won't it?

Congressman, there happens
to be a murder charge here.

And I have enough circumstantial
evidence to have you indicted.

Well, I'll have to take my
chances with the grand jury.

So you're gonna give up
without a fight? Just like that?

And then every lousy criminal
on the street will be able to say

that he can intimidate
and coerce politicians.

- None of that matters anymore.
- Well, what does matter to you?

My wife. My wife.
They've taken Kate.

Kidnapped her! I have
to do what they say!

- Do you understand?
- When? When did they...?

Right after you left, she
called. They... They made her...

Well, for God's sake, tell me who.
Maybe we can do something about it.

- There isn't time.
- What do you mean? Tell me...

- I mean... DANNY: Steve.

Hotel clerk identified
the Caucasian woman

who rented the second
room. It was Karen Bauer.

- Karen Bauer? The chaperone?
- She set me up?

Let's go.

CHUNG [OVER PHONE]:
That cop McGarrett is on to me.

He questioned me but had to let
me go when Carr wouldn't identify me.

Then you're probably
being followed right now.

Right.

You'll have to take
over from here on.

I should warn Reed and Otis.

I'll take care of it. You go
back to being a reporter.

[CHUCKLES]

ANDREA [OVER PHONE]:
The police are following Chung.

- Don't try to contact him again.
- I don't like this.

He said Carr would
never go to the police.

He didn't, they came to him.

Well, the sooner I get off
this island the happier I'll be.

I can understand that.

In the meantime, take
good care of our guest.

You're right. I
did rent the room.

For David Chung?

For, uh, Andrea King.

Andrea King? What would
she want with a room?

She said she needed
someplace to be alone.

I thought she wanted it

because she was having
an affair with someone.

Is she up in her room now?

No. She went to the auditorium.

Thank you, Ms. Bauer. Danno.

Get the list of Andrea
King's phone calls.

I'll be on my way
over to the auditorium.

Right.

[SIGHS]

Two more hours.

Central, patch me
through to McGarrett.

[RADIO BEEPS]

Danno, what did you find?

DANNY: Andrea King
made a lot of calls,

but she made one this afternoon
right after you had to release Chung.

It was to a motel
out in Pearl City.

Corner of Hopi Street
and Waimono Home Road.

Get some H.P.D. backup
and meet me there right away.

Hey, turn on the TV set.
We might as well watch it.

DANNY: Freeze.

- You're under arrest.
DANNY: Against the wall.

McGARRETT: Are
you all right, Mrs. Carr?

Kimo, get a message
to the Convention Center

to Congressman Carr.

Tell him we're on our way
with his wife and she's safe.

I hope Steve makes it.

He's only got another half hour.

[PHONE RINGING]

There's got to be someone
at the Convention Center.

Try the box office. Keep trying.

Everyone must be at
the press conference.

See if you can reach Duke and
Chin. They should be there by now.

Central, patch me
through to Lukela of Five-0.

MAN [ON RADIO]: Central
calling Lukela, come in please.

Central calling Lukela.

Now, what's this up here?

Oh, boy.

It's gonna be close, Steve.

[HORN HONKING]

McGARRETT:
Come on, move it, pal.

REPORTER: Can you tell us what
this press conference is all about?

CARR: Well, let's wait
for the press conference.

[CHATTERING]

[INAUDIBLE DIALOGUE]

[CAR DOORS CLOSE]

Well, was it worth it?

You're under arrest as an
accessory in the murder of Jane Kuan.

Book her, Danno, murder one.

CARR: Ladies and gentlemen.

It is my duty to report to you
tonight that yet another congressman

has been ensnared

in the intricate web
of bribery, blackmail,

and now murder.

Spun by Wing Tai Lee.

It is my duty to report to you
that the name of that congressman

is John Richard Carr.

I must acknowledge that I
would not be standing here

speaking to you, if it weren't
for the support, the help of others.

Steve McGarrett
of Hawaii Five-0.

And most especially, my wife.

Kate.

I'm not asking
for your approval,

but I am asking for
your understanding.
