Haven (2010–2015): Season 2, Episode 2 - Fear & Loathing - full transcript

One of the residents gains a new gift, bringing the fears of the other inhabitants of Haven to life.

NATHAN: Previously on Haven...

Audrey Parker?

Haven PD. Who are you?

My name is Special Agent Audrey Parker.

I know her. Drop the gun!

There are things in this town
that I can't explain.

- Me neither.
- But there is no way

that I have your memories.

People like me, we're different.

For some reason, I understand these people
and I can help them.

- You seriously can't feel pain?
- No.

- (HORN BLARING)
- (AUDREY 1 GRUNTING)

Duke, there's something you should see.

DUKE: Somebody out there with a tattoo
wants to kill me.

- Chief.
- I'm sorry about this, Nathan.

There's just no simple answers.

Dad.

My dad was holding it all together.

AUDREY 1: That's your job now.

The death of the Chief was a shock to us all.

But I want to thank you all for the support
you've shown me over the past few days.

My father always said Haven
is more than just a town. It's a family.

And I appreciate you all coming here today.

Thank you.

- Chief would be proud.
- Very nice.

Thank you.

I hate public speaking.

Yeah, well, now I know why.

Thanks for coming, Beattie.

Yeah, I'm glad the memorial was today.

Yesterday I was a little, tied up.

Thanks.

- Hey, Nathan.
- Lan.

Your dad looked out for me
a couple of times.

Least I could do, right?

You seen Duke around?

Maybe check his boat.

Yeah, right, will do. Thanks, and... Sorry.

(DOOR BELL JINGLES)

Good afternoon, Frank.

Get that beer I special ordered?

Stacked up in the back.

Good man.

(DOOR BELL JINGLES)

(GASPS)

(SNARLING)

It's going to rip us apart.

Murray! No!

Can't be. I buried you.

(WHISTLING)

Excuse me. Whoa, hey, man!
You okay?

Where the hell did he go?

Where did who go?

What can I get for you?

Can I take a sparkling water, please, with a...

- Orange peel.
- Orange peel.

Make that two.

You know, if this keeps happening,

I'm gonna have to start putting vodka
in my soda.

At least it's not tequila.

Remember spring break?

Unfortunately.

I know that this is all pretty weird.

So, I want to thank you for not turning me in
to your Agent Howard.

It's your Agent Howard that I'm interested in.

If we're going to find out
why you have my memories,

we need to find him.

When your Agent Howard was here,
who else did he talk to?

Chief. Nathan. Duke.

We were on his boat for a while,
so may be worth a shot to talk to him.

Your Agent Howard can't hide forever.

Hey, I was just gonna come find you.

Is Duke here?

Too many cops in one room.

Whoa! Nathan, you're bleeding.

Crazy. How did I do that?

Ow.

Nathan, what are you doing?

(NATHAN INHALES DEEPLY)

(NATHAN CHUCKLES)

I felt that.

I can... I can feel.

(DOOR BELL JINGLES)

I want animal control looking for that thing.

It was probably a harmless pet.

Look, I know what a mad dog looks like,
damn it.

One almost pulled my arm off as a kid.

There's no reports of a car accident or a fire.

With burns like that?
I haven't seen anything like it since Iraq.

No, I didn't see anything.

People just started acting crazy
for no reason.

And you didn't pass anyone on your way in?

No. Well, I came to see my girlfriend
through the back,

because she usually starts at that time.
But she wasn't there.

Thanks.

There you are.
I want police protection around the clock.

- I pay my taxes.
- No, you don't.

- Some of them.
- No, you don't.

Calm down, Duke. We'll find him.

Calm down?

Okay, I just saw the guy
who's going to kill me some day.

Do you know what it's like
knowing how you're going to die?

Man, I feel like I have a curse.

That came out wrong. Look...

What're you... what are you smiling about?

Curses can be lifted.

What the hell does that mean?

I can feel. Started this morning.

So you're saying if I punched
you right now...

It would be the last thing you ever did,
but yeah, I could feel it.

You've been saying that
since the fifth grade.

Wow!

So...

What's it like being back to normal?

Haven't really had time to process.

You mean...

No, I mean process.

Well, I'll tell you what.

You find this tattooed guy for me

and I will introduce you
to some very lovely ladies

who would be more than happy
to help you process.

I've got to get back to work.

If you're worried about the cost,
it's my treat.

That's very nice of you. Thank you, but no.

All right, the clerk said that
the burnt woman was bleeding,

but I can't find any blood.

Nothing from the dog either.
No hair, no saliva.

Sheila said her zombie husband
was dropping dirt, but the aisles are clear.

Thanks for helping us
and for not turning in Audrey.

Okay. Well, I want to find out
what's happening in this crazy town, too.

So what did the sweep turn up?

Area's clean.

Maybe they were hallucinating.

Hallucinations. Caused by what?

More likely "by whom?"

I'm gonna go back to the station,
go through the Chief's files,

see if anything like this
has happened before.

So I've been trying to come up
with a rational explanation

for the things that happen
in this crazy town.

I'd love to hear what you come up with.

Well, Haven could be some kind of a test site.

Or maybe a pharmaceutical company's
been illegally dumping drugs.

You know, you should take a soil sample.
Water, too.

That's actually not a bad idea.
If I start with the water...

Oh, you're humouring me.

Yep. Because I've already tried all that.

(PHONE RINGING)

How often does
this sort of thing happen, anyway?

- Parker.
- WOMAN: We need you at the

bus station immediately.

Yeah, we'll be right there.

A lot.

(PEOPLE SCREAMING)

Your bright idea to bring us here for lunch.

They have draught root beer.
The kind with extra vanilla.

- I mean, what's out there?
- I don't know.

- You go take a look.
- You take a look.

No. Go on.

What is it?

Dave, what did you see?

(DAVE STUTTERING)

It's impossible.

She can't be here.

She can't.

DUKE: Why are you bothering me, lan?

I've got something brewing. Something big.

Yeah, I'm sure you do.

But I, uh, I got to get out of town.
Cross the border. Get it set up, right?

Sorry, lan, I'm not taking
any charters right now.

I'm looking for somebody.

Oh, come on, Duke.
One trip. For old time's sake.

Old times usually consisted of
you screwing up and me posting bail.

Well, let me make it up to you.
I can pay cash up front.

If you can pay,

then ask Buck.

Buck doesn't have the coast guard
contacts you do, right?

(CRUNCHING)

You're kidding, right?

Look, I'm gonna go now.
I'll give you a chance to think it over.

I'll come back later, right?

Wrong! Do not come back.

(PEOPLE CONTINUE SCREAMING)

Hey! Hey! You need to hold up. Wait!

Run! It's coming! It's coming!

- Stop! What are you doing?
- He's coming for us.

Don't you see him?

Hold up. Wait. I need to talk to you.

Sir, what... You okay?

(GASPING)

Hey, wait!

Wait! I need to talk to you.

Call 911.

Sir...

- Sir.
- (GROANS)

Well, he's going to be okay.

Whatever he saw scared him enough
to give him a heart attack.

Well, he's lucky you two
made it to him in time.

Not me.

I choked.

It was all just so real.
I swear I could smell the popcorn.

What did you see?

A clown. Look, I know it's stupid, but...

Wait. The clown?

The one with the teeth?

- Yeah.
- Clowns?

It was my fifth grade carnival.

There was this funhouse
and the older girls made me go in.

And then he just came out of nowhere.

It was just this stupid clown, but...

But it's the scariest thing
I've ever seen in my entire life. Ever.

Wait, that...

That's what people are seeing
when they see this girl.

Whatever or whoever scares them the most.

That would line up with a report I found.

A guy named Bob Taylor barricaded himself
in his house for two days.

He said Bigfoot was after him.

Well, that would make sense
with what was happening today.

But if it's this girl
and Taylor saw her a month ago,

where's she been all this time?

Why haven't we heard reports
of other people being affected?

And why weren't you affected?

I don't know. I'm just usually not.

We need to find her
before anyone else gets hurt.

Hey, Vince.

I'm going to go talk to Vince, see if he can
draw up a sketch of the girl I saw.

Somebody in town should recognise her.

- You coming?
- No!

I think maybe I need to take
a little break from the clowns.

- Clowns, huh?
- Don't forget. You can feel pain now.

Hey, Duke. You here?

No!

Lan, I swear, you are five seconds
from taking a swim.

I got the cash.
Enough to make this trip worth your while.

Where'd you get cash like that?

I told you I'm into something big.
It's all different for me now.

Yet your spiffy wardrobe remains the same.

Not for long. Everything's gonna change.
You'll see.

Want to tell me what kind of con
you're running here?

You won't regret it. I promise.

No deal.

Vice Principal Dolores Bachman.

That was a sympathy... Never mind.

Lan, that is the last time you get to use that.

Of course. I never would have even
mentioned it. But I got to get north.

Tomorrow, right?

Yeah.

Is she here because of you?

What do you mean? Who is she?

She's an FBI agent.

Look, just take off.
I'll find out what she knows.

Send my best to the bishop.

And say hi to Sister Catherine for me.

Not the tattooed man, I gather.

I wish.

Lan, I can handle.

But you know I sure would be happier
if you were out there looking for him.

Well, the guy that you saw wasn't real.

- Excuse me?
- Apparently some girl is causing people

to hallucinate
whatever they're most afraid of.

I hate myself for saying that.

No, don't. That's fantastic. I mean...

That's great news.

So you're saying I imagined him.

- Yeah.
- Thank you. You have a nice day.

Uh, Duke. Don't thank me.

Help me.

I need to find Audrey's bogus Agent Howard.
She said he was here?

Yeah. And he spent most of his time
with Audrey.

I was dealing with my own...

Situation.

Well, did he say where he was going next
or was he staying in town?

Did he have a rental car?

No.

I don't know. I don't know.

Come on, Duke. You're an observant guy.

There was a government agent on my boat.
I wasn't trying to bond with him.

I was just trying to get rid of him.

Speaking of which.

Nice try.

But I'm thinking I'm gonna be pretty hard
to get rid of, too.

Yeah. Me and the 20 or so coast guard agents
I could have here by the end of the day.

Wow.

You're kind of sexy when you're threatening.

Maybe my security cameras got something.

See, I knew you were a security-conscious
kind of guy.

I'm a safety guy. Come on. This way.

Here's our girl.

- Don't recognise her.
- Neither does Vince.

No one at the bus station remembers her

even though they would've been staring
right at her.

And that's because they weren't seeing her.
They were seeing their fears.

Well, if she's the source, we may have a lead.

Guess who was a witness
to Bob's attack on his wife, Bigfoot?

Brian Shaw.

AUDREY 1: Kid from the grocery store?

Mmm-hmm.

He was there looking for his girlfriend.

I hope he's still looking.

You hacked into the entire marina?

(IN FOREIGN ACCENT)
I only use my powers for good.

(IN NORMAL ACCENT) Mostly.

Right. Wait a minute. Is that him?

- Yep. That's him.
- Can you blow it up?

Let me see what I can do.

Looks like Chief Wuornos and Howard
were having a little powwow.

AUDREY 2: Agent Howard, huh?

It's hard to tell about what, though.

Yeah, but it's someplace for me to start.

Thank you. I owe you one.

I'll remember that.

All right. Jackie Clark. 181 Seekonk Street.

She works morning shifts
at the grocery store,

and the clerk said that she didn't show.

But why did this all start today?

Did you know the skin on your lips
is the most sensitive on your entire body?

Okay, you're kinda starting to weird me out.

Still getting used to this whole feeling thing.

Back when you...

...kissed my cheek,

that was the first time in years
that I had felt another person's touch.

I hope you didn't feel too weird about it.

Why would I feel weird?

Exactly.

Jackie, I know you're in there.

Come on, open the door.

Jackie, jeez.

Where've you been?
I've been worried about you.

This isn't a good time, Brian.

- What's wrong?
- You have to go away.

I can't see you any more.

Are you mad at me? Did I do something?

I can't explain it to you.

- You just have to go.
- No, you're not breaking up with me again

without telling me why.

Okay, I love you.

And I know you love me.

- Brian, please.
- No, we're gonna talk about this.

Brian, I don't think this is a good idea.

Brian, you shouldn't.

BRIAN: Jackie!

(BRIAN SCREAMING)

AUDREY 1: The door's open.

Haven PD.

Brian? Put it down.

Brian, it's...

It's gonna be okay, all right?

- Are you hurt?
- No, it's not me. It was a burglar.

It was just like when I was kid,
except this time I stopped him.

- And I stabbed him.
- Okay.

Brian, tell me exactly what happened.

Uh, well, I came here to see Jackie, but...

There was a guy in the house.
So I grabbed the knife...

It's clear. She's not here.

Where's Jackie?

Brian, I need you to listen to me.

Has Jackie been acting strangely?

Well, a few months or so ago,
after her dad died, she had some problems.

Problems?

She wouldn't tell me what they were.

But we broke up
'cause she said she needed space.

But a few weeks ago, we got back together.

And things have been fine since.

We think that Jackie might have an...

Have an affliction.

That when people look at her,
they see something that's not there.

Whatever frightens them.

That was Jackie?

No, no, no. No, I'd never hurt her.
No, I love her.

Okay, I need you to think.

All right, Jackie is out there somewhere
and she's hurt. So where would she go?

(WOMAN SCREAMING)

There's a madman inside my house.

It's okay, ma'am. Stay here.

Are you sure?

Jackie?

Jackie, are you here?

Got more blood here.

Listen, we know you're hurt.

JACKIE: I just needed some bandages.

Mrs McCarthy was supposed to be at work.

Tell her I'm sorry.

We just... We want to help.

No one can help me.

Just leave me alone!

Are you okay?

- Go after her. Go after her!
- No, what did you see?

- No, Jackie!
- Stop!

Before I hurt you, too.

You're not gonna hurt me. I promise.

Just look at me, Jackie.

Look at me. It's gonna be okay.

See? Nothing scary.

I've lived in this town my whole life,

and I always heard about weird things
happening to people, but I...

Well, when did it all start for you?

After my father died,

one of the neighbours came over
with this stupid casserole.

I opened the door and she got hysterical.

And it just kept happening.

Like, people would see terrible things
when I looked at them.

And then a couple weeks ago,
it just went away.

And everything was normal again.

What were you doing when it stopped?

I was hiding in Bangor,

and this guy attacked me.

Slashed me with a knife.

And this woman ran up to help me
and when she looked at me,

she didn't freak out.

No one did.

So, I came home, I made up with Brian.

Everything was okay until this morning.

I just want to be normal again.

Be with Brian.

We were so happy and now it's all ruined.

It's not ruined.

- Don't look at me.
- Jackie, I'm sorry.

I thought all this curse stuff was crap.

And now that you know it's not?

I don't care. I still love her.

Come on.

And the number only appears once?

You're sure?

Okay, text me if you get a street address.

So, this girl, she's one of them?

She's troubled. Yes.

So, did Duke give you anything on Howard?

Howard had a talk with Chief Wuornos
after he left Duke's boat.

I just pulled up the Chief's phone records.

And, naturally, you asked Nathan first?

The Chief made a 20 minute call
to an unknown number

the day that Howard was in town.

I'm waiting for a trace on the address.

Well, when you get that, you wait for me.

- Jackie okay?
- Yeah, for now.

Something strange is going on.

Bold statement.

Do you know that Jackie
spent the last couple weeks

thinking that she had been cured
of her trouble?

Sounds familiar.

Yeah. And her affliction
returned just this morning.

When I lost mine.

So, what's the connection?

Right before her affliction disappeared,
she was attacked.

This guy cut her.

Maybe that's what happened to you.

This? You think someone cut me,

someone who can steal
other people's afflictions

by touching their blood.
Who would want mine?

I mean, who would want to go around
not being able to feel anything?

(GLASS SHATTERS)

Night watchman is on his rounds.
He came in here, checked the room,

found they'd been robbed.

But none of the perimeter alarms
were tripped.

So, the thief had to have
come in through here.

- It's a damn tight squeeze.
- Sounds painful.

Not if he couldn't feel it.

This had to be the same guy
who took my affliction.

The only thing that was taken

was this 18th century
children's puzzle board.

Hardly seems worth
not ever being able to feel again.

I've been thinking about that.

If Jackie's affliction came back
when he took mine,

maybe he can only hold one at a time.

Which means that yours can come back?

If he touches another
troubled person's blood, yeah.

Okay, but why the elaborate plan?

According to the curator,
this is just a piece of Haven folk art.

Doesn't even have all of its pieces.

What could it really be worth?

CHILD: # One, two, buckle my shoe

# Three, four, shut the door

# Five, six... #

Let's see if this thing really works.

# Seven, eight...

# Nine, ten... #

NATHAN: The ash isn't even warm.

(SIGHS) It would take a fire days
to reduce a building to this.

So if it didn't burn down,
it had to be something else.

What I don't get is,
what the hell this has to do

with everything else that's been happening.

I know.

There were people inside.

What could have done this?

We need to talk.

Tristram Carver,

sent away by his family
on a colony ship to live in Haven

as an indentured servant.

Always resented the town
he saw as a prison.

So this puzzle belonged to him.

Story was, he made it, imbuing his hatred
for the town into every piece.

And when he was finally able to assemble it,

buildings started to fall.

So, The Troubles have been here
since the beginning?

Yeah. His caretakers
took the puzzle from him.

- They wanted to destroy it.
- But they couldn't.

Not without destroying the town.

That's right.
Instead they scattered the pieces.

All these years,

the puzzle board sat in the museum,
harmless.

The town elders came to believe
it was just folklore.

But it wasn't. And now someone has it.

And knows how to use it.

You know who'd love to get their hands
on this is Reverend Driscoll.

Hold it up to his followers as proof
that the troubled are dangerous and evil.

- Does he know about this?
- I doubt it.

The secret was very well kept
with the family.

Yet you knew about it.

Well, I'm a very good researcher.

Uh-huh.

We need to talk to the Carvers.

The whole family died out.

There hasn't been a Carver
in Haven in almost 50 years.

You said the puzzle pieces were scattered.

Do you know where
they might have ended up?

(GROANS)

Damn it!

We're ready to go, right?

Lan, wait!

What? You said you'd be ready.

(STUTTERING) Yeah. I thought I was.

But, I actually got to do something
before we leave.

Duke, come on, man. I paid you.
I got a schedule. Don't mess with me, man.

- What's going on, lan?
- We had a deal.

We still have a deal.
And we're going, just like I said.

I just...

I need a new dial.

For my nav console.

- You recall the one I had broke?
- Yeah. Right.

So, I got to go pick up another one. Okay?

Well, hurry it up, right?
I don't want to go without you.

Well, fortunately for me,
you can't drive this thing.

Two weeks ago, there was a robbery
at a folk art museum in Maryland.

The thief got away when a riot broke out.

Terrified people turning on each other.

He used Jackie's affliction
to gather the puzzle pieces,

and yours to take the board.

Did I hear right?

An entire building just disappeared?

I can't wait to hear
how you're going to contain this.

Well, we may not have anything
left to contain

if we can't find out who's doing this.

All right.
So, I had Stan go through the family trees

that Vince gave us to see
what families married in with the Carvers.

Came up with Elliot, Robbins, Haskell...

lan Haskell. He was at the memorial.

He shook my hand.
He must have had a razor blade hidden there

and used it to cut me.

Hey, um...

- I just saw the weirdest thing.
- Lan Haskell. Where is he?

Okay, that's really weird, too,
because that's what I came here to tell you.

Um...

- He can't feel pain.
- Did he mention anything about a puzzle?

What?

I'm sorry, did you not hear what I just said?
He cannot feel pain.

NATHAN: Duke, the puzzle. This is serious.

Okay. Puzzle. Let's talk about puzzles.
Um, no, he didn't mention a puzzle,

but he did ask me to take him to Canada.

Where is he now?

He's waiting for me on my boat.

I'm calling harbour patrol.
We can't let him get out of Haven.

No, that's going to take too long.

They can have the harbour shut down
in 20 minutes.

Okay. Can we just get him off my boat?

AUDREY 2: Do you want me to come?

No, actually. You should stay here.

If this goes bad, we could use outside help.

You're FBI. They might believe you.

I'm sorry. Time out.

Lan's not seriously dangerous.

Is he?

Come on. Come on.

Harbour patrol's standing by.
Let's take this slow.

The puzzle's on my boat.

Lan had a bag with him.

The puzzle's probably in there.

This stuff ain't so hard.

Hey, yeah, but we gotta be careful
about how we get it.

We still don't know how it works.

And remember, he still has your affliction,

- so don't touch him.
- It's not really about me any more.

- Lan!
- Drop your gun or the kid gets it!

- No, don't hurt him.
- We just wanted to talk to him.

Make him take Jackie's curse away again.

Just shut up!

Inside. Start the boat.

And you got 30 seconds to get off,
or I'll do it. I will.

I'll shoot Brian right in the head.
And then I'll crush this whole town.

Lan, knock this crap off!

- Give us the puzzle!
- Yeah, that's not gonna happen.

What are you doing?

- What happened to you?
- You mean why...

Why am I not a loser any more?
Not a big joke?

The Troubles came back,
that's what happened. And now...

Now people have to take me seriously.
Now I get my payback.

You wanted revenge, you got it.

- People died today.
- That building was just a taste.

Once we're at sea, I'm gonna wipe
this whole freaking town off the map.

Anyone who ever messed with me.

- Made fun of me.
- No!

(GUN FIRES)

Watch!

I can't even feel it.

I was doing you a solid, man.

You would've been with me, safe.

(GUN SHOT)

(GASPING) I still can't feel it.

Don't talk. Nathan!

I need an ambulance at the Cape Rouge now.

Okay, here, don't touch him.

We don't want your affliction to come back.

It's here.

If he dies
while he still has Nathan's affliction,

then that means Nathan will be cured, right?

What?

He wanted to evaporate the whole town,
I'm supposed to worry about his feelings?

I say you make your bed, you lie in it.

You could still do something good.
This may be your last chance.

Will you take Nathan's affliction?
Do you know?

(GASPS)

Yeah. Happy ending, right?

Wait, Nathan!

Nathan.

(SOBBING)

Jackie.

Look at me.

It's okay.

You have beautiful eyes.

It's gone. You're okay now.

This is the address
that Howard called the chief from?

Yeah. The phone was disconnected
the next day.

Who knows how long Howard was in Haven
and I never knew about it.

Unstake My Heart.

- This is mine.
- Or it could be mine.

No.

This is the exact same copy
that Howard took from me

before I came to Haven. See?

Page is still turned down.

That isn't an accident. He left that for me.

He left this for us.

But how could he know we'd come here?

We knew lan our whole lives.

I'm not gonna miss him.

He was tired of being a misfit.

Like the original boy.

It must've taken lan years
to find all these pieces.

It's hard to believe he did it alone.

Could be someone else out there
with a stake in this.

Yeah, well.

We'll make sure
no one finds the pieces this time.

Uh, excuse me.

What exactly are you guys going to do
with them?

- We know somewhere safe.
- DUKE: Yeah.

As a fairly upstanding citizen of Haven,

I'm gonna need a little more
of an answer than "somewhere safe."

Oh, that's completely understandable.

Duke.

Thanks for helping us out.

I told you, I just...

...wanted lan off my boat.

Found out Julia Carr went back to Africa.

She's scared of this town.
I don't think she's the only one.

You know, in my experience,

when people are scared,
they either run or they fight.

I'd start planning for both.

Back at the bus station,

that person that you thought you saw,

your worst fear, was it Lucy?

No.

I wish it was.

I'm sorry.

No, you're not.

So, the book you found at Howard's,
what do you think it means?

I'm not sure.

But I know that it means
we're on the right track.

How much about Haven
do you think Howard knows?

That's a good question.

I think the better question is,
why did he bring me here?

Hey, that was really amazing
what you did today.

(DISMISSINGLY) Ah.

Not every day you can help
save an entire town.

Although it is happening more often lately.

You know what I meant.

My affliction's tough to live with,
but Jackie's is impossible.

I mean, I can live a normal life mostly.

She'd never be able to.

Still...

Troubles went away before.
They'll go away again. I can...

...wait.
