Hart to Hart (1979–1984): Season 4, Episode 12 - Emily by Hart - full transcript

Max: This is my
boss, Jonathan Hart,

a self-made millionaire.

He's quite a guy.

This is Mrs. H. She's gorgeous.

She's one lady who knows
how to take care of herself.

By the way, my name is Max.

I take care of both of
them, which ain't easy,

'cause when they
met, it was murder.

( theme music playing )

Are you sure you
want me to pick up

some more of that
soybean curd, Mrs. H.?

That's right, Max.

And more wheat germ?

Of course.

Just because it's good for you

doesn't mean it
doesn't taste good.

I wonder where that leaves
pizza and chocolate dream pie?

- Right on your waistline.
- ( dull thud )

What was that?

I didn't hear anything. Why?

I thought I heard a noise.

Can you think of
anything else, Mrs. H.?

No, no, just the usual, Max.

Max: I'll be back
in a couple of hours.

Max, are you sure you
didn't hear anything?

I didn't hear anything.

Where's Freeway?

He's probably upstairs.
He usually doesn't

get out of bed until 8:30.

Oh.

Yeah.

Well... I, uh...

I guess I'll see
you later, then.

- Okay.
- Bye.

( door closes )

Oh.

Freeway, is that you
making all that noise?

- You rascal, you.
- ( dog whines )

( door closes )

What?

What happened to all my clothes?

( rustling )

- ( gasps )
- ( chuckles )

Jonathan, you scared
the life out of me.

What's going on?

I am taking you
away from all of this.

- All of this?
- Mm-hmm.

- Would you be serious?
- I am serious.

Where are my clothes?

They're in the car
and they're packed.

Where are we going?

Knights in shining
armor never tell.

( barks )

Mr. Hart: Ah, are you surprised?

Mrs. Hart: Oh, Santa
Luesa, what a great idea.

Yeah, it's quiet and
it's all ours for 36 hours.

Jennifer: Aw.

- Feel like stretching?
- Jennifer: Sure.

Thank you for my surprise.

Oh, you were surprised, huh?

- Yes.
- Good.

Is there anything in
particular you're looking for?

Well, when I packed for you,
I forgot to pack a nightgown.

Don't worry about it.

Man: Yeah, I know, it looks like

I've been volunteered, huh?

Man #2: What's your problem?

Uh, that woman,
she looks familiar.

So?

So, when are you
dusting the Wainright farm?

Not until later this afternoon.

All right. Make sure
you get there on time.

I got to get back
to the airport.

Yeah, look, why
don't you go on ahead

and I'll catch up
with you, okay?

Hey, remember,
you got work to do.

Hey, Al, don't worry about it.

Oh, it's a beautiful hotel.

What a lovely idea
and very well planned.

Only the best for you.

Oh, I'll drink to that.

Maitre d': Right
this way, please.

The table right
over in the corner,

if you don't mind. Thank you.

Oh, hey, Frank, how's it going?

Hey, Mike. What
can I do for you?

That woman over
there in the black...

Is her name Hart?

Yeah, Mr. and Mrs. Hart.
Why? Friends of yours?

No, no, friend of a friend.

- Oh.
- ( phone ringing )

Terrace Restaurant.

Well, this is certainly
a perfect place

for 36 hours.

Mm.

How long have you
been planning this?

Since Saturday.

Saturday?

But Saturday was a...

oh, Saturday.

Yeah.

Well, that was very...
Very inspirational.

Yes.

I'd like a repeat
without any interruptions

or any annoyances
or anything like that.

Okay.

Mr. Hart, your office
is on the phone.

They said it's urgent.

( sighs )

Next time you have to
find a place with no phone.

I'm gonna make sure of
that, and I'll be right back.

Uh, Jennifer Hart?

Yes?

Hi.

I'm Mike Huntington.

Yes?

I recognize you from
your book covers.

I'm a friend of Emily Jensen's.

Emily Jensen? I'm sorry...

She attended a seminar of
yours in Santa Barbara last year.

She always said that
you were the reason

that she became a reporter.

She also said that
you were probably

the toughest
teacher she ever had.

Oh, well, that's
very flattering.

Well, maybe a picture will
help you recognize her face.

Oh, yes, of course.

Yes, Emily.

Oh, sure, I remember her.

Oh, she was a very good student.

She was very, very inquisitive,

asked a lot of questions.

Well, you...

you certainly made a
big impression on her.

Thank you. How is Emily?

She d-died three weeks ago.

Oh, I'm sorry.

Yeah, she took some pills.

How awful.

Jeez, I don't know why
I'm telling you all this.

I guess because I don't
understand it myself.

She seemed very happy
here, you know, we were gonna

get married and all.

Darling, this is Mike...

- Huntington, hi.
- Hello.

I just really
wanted to say hello.

I better be going. It's
nice to have met you both.

Jonathan: What
was that all about?

There was a...

there was a girl at that seminar

that I did in Santa
Barbara last year.

Her name was Emily.

Mike just told me she
died... Killed herself.

Sorry, darling.

Yeah.

Come on, let's take
a walk on the beach.

Sure.

Jonathan: Are you all right?

Jennifer: I'm fine.

I was just remembering
that girl, Emily.

She was a very nice girl.

She was very
concerned about people,

quality of life.

I remember what she...

She told me she thought
we were very much alike.

No, Mrs. Hart...

you're an original.

( plane motor whirring )

Well, you... enjoy
the afternoon off?

Yeah, I'm taking off now.

You know that woman I
thought I recognized in town?

Turned out to be a
friend of Emily's, actually,

- Emily studied with her.
- She a reporter, too?

She's a writer. She does
some reporting, yeah.

And what's she
doing around here?

I don't know, I didn't
ask. Is it important?

No, I just don't want
any more trouble.

All heart, Alex.

I guess from your point
of view, Emily saved you

a lot of trouble by dying, huh?

Why don't you take
off and get out of here?

Oh, I didn't mean
to wake you up.

- You all right?
- I'm fine.

- I'm worried about you.
- Why?

The way all this
is affecting you.

I'll be okay.

Well, this isn't exactly
the weekend we planned.

Oh, I know.

I'm sorry.

But the most important thing is,

we're together, you and me.

And no matter what happens,

we'll work it out
because we're together.

- You bet we will.
- So there.

( laughs )

It's just that...

( sighs ) it's such a waste,

that poor girl.

That is a waste.

But for Emily, the
things that she wrote,

the people that she
touched... That wasn't wasted.

You know something?

Of all the special
things about you...

the most special thing
about our marriage

is that we talk.

There aren't a lot of people
that do that, you know.

We do talk.

And sometimes it's hard to
put your feelings into words.

Sometimes maybe it's better

not to put your
feelings into words.

Just knowing you care...

knowing you're there for me...

that's all I ever need.

Do you think you can
get some sleep now?

Yeah. Yeah.

Jennifer: Oh, this is lovely.

Last night was lovely,
this morning is lovely.

Jonathan: You're lovely.

Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Hart.

Both: Good morning.

Jennifer: Where we going?

Jonathan: I want
to go down to town.

There's something
I have to pick up.

Surprise?

No, no surprise,
just a loaf of bread.

Loaf of bread?

Yeah, I thought we'd
have a picnic on the beach.

See, I've got the
wine, and thou.

And all you need
is a loaf of bread.

- You got it.
- That's very cute.

( laughing )

( engine starts )

Mm, good huh?

Fabulous.

I thought you only wanted
to have a loaf of bread.

( laughing )

You know I can't
pass up chocolate chip.

- Mm, wait.
- What?

- Drooling.
- Oh.

Look at that.

This must be where she worked.

Darling...

would you mind if we
went in there for a minute?

( keys clicking )

- Jennifer: Hello?
- Oh, how you doing, folks?

Something I can do for you?

My name is Jennifer Hart,
this is my husband, Jonathan.

Jennifer Hart?
The Jennifer Hart?

Jennifer: I beg your pardon?

Oh, I'm sorry. Ben Alden.

- How do you do?
- Hello.

Nice to meet you. Well,
make yourself at home.

Sit down. Can I get
you some coffee?

No, no, no. Thank you.

What are you doing
in Santa Luesa?

We're trying to spend
a quiet weekend.

I can't tell you how many times

Emily mentioned your
name right here in this office.

Uh, we met Mike.

He told us what
happened to Emily.

Poor Emily.

You know, she was the
best reporter I ever had?

In a small town like this, no
matter what she wrote about,

she made it seem important.

And on top of that, she
wrote a pile of essays.

This is her desk over here.

I haven't had the
heart to clear it off.

I guess I'm conning myself

on the idea that she's suddenly

gonna come walking
in here and sit down.

Does anyone know why Emily
might want to commit suicide?

No. Nope.

She was at the
center of everything,

she had friends, she
was never in trouble.

She did ruffle a
few feathers, though.

This is the last
editorial she wrote,

the beginning of it...
She didn't finish it.

"A Cloud of Doubt"?

That's a series on crop dusting.

Before she...

before she died, she told
me the story had taken

a couple of interesting turns.

I keep thinking she
would've finished it.

Mike. She mentions Mike in this.

Is he a crop duster?

Mm-hmm.

That's a story worth
writing in and of itself.

Mike really loved her.

His boss wasn't too thrilled.

Why is that?

Because agriculture is our
bread and butter up here.

She drew a lot
of heat with that.

Do you think that
could've made a difference

in their relationship?

Mike's? No.

I think Mike would've
become a circus performer

if he thought his job made
Emily unhappy in any way.

I've given up trying to
read what happened.

I think that Emily's
story, whatever it was,

she took it with her
when she left us.

Would you mind if I kept this?

Not at all.

Thank you.

- It's nice to meet you.
- Nice to have met you.

Bye.

Now, don't be too critical now.

Emily always wanted to
live up to your expectations.

- Bye-bye.
- Bye-bye.

Bye.

( phone jingling )

( sighs )

Yeah, we may have a problem.

No, no, not in your
area. Right here.

You know that reporter I
took care of last month?

Well, our problems may
have come back to life.

Another reporter... name's Hart.

No, no, no, I take
care of this one.

Mrs. Hart gets too
nosy, she may follow

the other one's footsteps
right to the cemetery.

( laughing )

This sounds interesting.
"14-mile drive.

This scenic route
between Santa Luesa

and Santa Mara affords
spectacular ocean vistas

along one of California's
loveliest beaches."

Uh-huh.

Six-headed monsters...

semi-clad women luring tourists

into flaming pits of fire...

festering pots of tar.

Sounds nice.

You're not really interested
in scenic routes, are you?

Oh, no. Yes, I am.

I just...

I'm just fascinated
by Emily's story.

I've got the idea that
you're not really interested

in looking at "fantastic
rock formations."

I think you'd rather
go back into town

and talk with Mr. Alden.

No, no, no. That's
not what we planned.

I know you, hmm?

Remember me? I
know you very well.

And I know when
you're onto something

and when you want
to follow it through.

And I have an idea.

After we talk to Mr. Alden,

we'll go to the airport and
have a word with Mike, hmm?

Waiter, could I have
the check, please?

Have I told you lately
that you're terrific?

Yes, you have.

But will you tell me again?

Come on, tell me. Tell me.

- You're terrific.
- Mm.

- ( laughs )
- Mr. Hart?

Thank you.

- Mrs. Hart.
- Hmm?

This is a book of
Emily's favorite poems.

I'd like you to have it.

Oh, that's very sweet,
Mr. Alden, thank you.

I think she'd want
you to have them.

Mr. Alden... what
day did Emily die?

January... January 14th.

January 14th.

What does this mean...
"Alex is a new man"?

"Alex is a new man."
Oh, that must refer

to Alex Carmen. I
told you about him.

He runs the cropdusting service.

He's Mike's boss, right?

Yes, he rents the planes.

What's this?

Oh, well, it looks
like part of a sketch.

Emily was always sketching.

I'll put it with the others.

( sighs ) Well...

thanks very much, Mr. Alden.

And thank you for the book.

I was glad to find
someone to give it to.

- Bye-bye.
- Bye-bye.

Bye.

I want you to go easy
on the drug shipments

for a while. Yeah.

Hold on. Hold on.

Policy number 3361-GI.

Hi, one second, okay?

Yeah, it's causing
too much heat.

The New York P.D.
is picking up anybody

with a glazed look
in their eye. Yeah.

Now, I'm going to
be touching down

in about 35 minutes,

keep one on ice
for me. I'm gone.

Well, this is a surprise. Hi.

- Hi, Mike.
- Hello, Mike.

How'd you find me?

Oh, well, it wasn't
very difficult.

We just walked...

we went into the newspaper
where Emily used to work.

We read some of the
articles that she wrote.

Look... I regret coming
to you yesterday.

I really didn't want to
involve you in all this.

Well, Mike,

I'm afraid we're
already involved.

Jonathan: When
we were at the office,

we noticed on Emily's
desk that she had a calendar.

A few days before she died,

she had written down on
one of the pieces of paper

that "Alex is a new man"?

Alex, obviously, being
Alex Carmen, my boss.

He and Emily really locked horns

when she began writing
those articles about us.

He felt that she was bringing us

a lot of unnecessary publicity.

How bad did it get?

Well, I never thought
it was that serious.

I mean, obviously, Alex
can be a pretty ornery guy,

but he simply didn't
want the attention.

Crop dusting is the biggest
part of your business, right?

Well, it's part of it.

We also do a lot of
charters and plane rentals.

So anything Emily
wanted to write about us

wouldn't have hurt the business.

Besides, I also think
that she and Alex

were beginning
to see eye-to-eye.

He was willing to
keep an open mind

and she decided to tell
both sides of the story.

So that's probably
what that note

in the calendar is all about.

Did her writing affect
your relationship?

( sighs )

Well, it put me
smack in the middle.

See, I never understood

why she was so
serious about the story.

Truth is, I don't
understand any of this.

Hey, Mike.

You got an airplane to deliver.

Right. I'm on my way.

Alex, Mr. and Mrs. Hart.

Nice to meet you.

Hello.

Well, Mike, we're
going back to the hotel,

- we'll see you later, then.
- Fine. Fine.

- Excuse me.
- Yeah.

Who are they?

They wanted to talk about Emily.

Huntington, I don't want to tell
you how to run your business,

but you better get off
that circuit you're on.

- You're going to burn out.
- Alex, what's the problem?

I'll tell you what the problem
is... I don't want any more

writers, reporters
hanging around the airport.

- You got it?
- Fine.

But you're going to have
to take that up with them.

I got an airplane to
deliver, remember?

Mmm, clams on the half shell,

fresh rainbow trout...

Oh, what a wonderful dinner.

Mrs. Hart, I've got
a message for you.

Oh, thank you, Frank.

Shall I wait for a reply?

Where's Logan's Farm?

About 20 miles from
here just off of Highway 17.

Thank you. There
will be no reply.

What's that all about?

"I found something
interesting about Emily's work,

meet me tomorrow at 8:00
a.m. by Logan's Farm. Mike."

What were you
saying before that?

When?

Before you got the message.

Nothing. It was just wonderful.

Why don't you get the check

and I'll tell you about it?

Frank?

Jennifer: Maybe we
should've taken our car.

Well, the man at the desk
said it would be a little rough

on the suspension.
I think he was right.

I wonder why Mike wanted us

to meet him so far out of town?

I don't know, but maybe
he wanted to talk to us

about something and he
didn't want Alex to hear.

( whirring )

That must be Mike.

Jonathan!

Your hunch about
Emily just paid off.

He picked a great
location, no coverage.

Look out!

Did you see who that
was? Was it Mike?

I don't know, but
someone is definitely

up in smoke about all of this.

Alden: What you're
saying is there's a possibility

that Emily did not kill herself?

Mm-hmm.

Well, somebody's pretty
stirred up about Jennifer's

interest in Emily,
that's for sure.

You couldn't see the pilot?

No, we couldn't see
him through the glass.

But what we don't
understand is why.

Mike said that Carmair
could exist very nicely

without the cropdusting service.

They'd just rely
on their charters.

Did Emily have any files
anyplace else, like at home?

There is a file cabinet
in her apartment.

Listen...

I've got the keys
to her apartment

and the rent's paid up until
we find some family member

to take charge
of her belongings.

But you're welcome to
go over there and look.

How do we find it?

You go right down to the beach,

turn right, and
go up five blocks.

- It's number one.
- Okay.

- Thanks very much, Mr. Alden.
- You're welcome.

Well, is this what you
expected it to look like?

I don't know.

I don't know what
I really expected

her apartment to look like.

Blake, Robert Frost,
Dylan, E.E. Cummings.

Well, she certainly
did have good taste

in who she got her
inspirations from.

Ben said there ought
to be a filing cabinet

around here someplace.

Ah, here we go.

Well, there doesn't
seem to be much in there.

I don't suppose much
happens in Santa Luesa.

Hey, look at this.

Do you have any idea
what those markings mean?

I don't know.

Why would she save this article?

I think I know
what it's all about.

Why don't you stay here
and see what you can find?

I'm going to run
back to the newspaper

for about a half an hour.

I'll be right back.
I got an idea.

What are you thinking?

I'm not sure, but if I'm right,

I think I may know why
Alex Carmen killed Emily.

I'll be back in a bit.

Hmm.

Darling?

I think I found what
I was looking for.

What?

You see these lines?

You see how they
match up with those lines?

It's amazing.

That's what Emily
meant by her note,

"Alex really is a new man."
She meant that literally.

And Cortland obviously
survived his own plane crash.

He probably even staged it.

With a few cosmetic changes.

He keeps right on going
and doesn't even have

to worry about the police.

But why here? Why Santa Luesa?

It's a small town, flying
distance to Mexico,

and I'm certain it didn't
disturb his drug traffic.

Poor Emily.

I wonder if she knew what
she was getting herself in for.

Ben's waiting back
at the office. Come on.

You're absolutely right.
There's no doubt about it.

Did Emily ever say
anything to you about that?

No, that's the
first I've heard of it.

But knowing Emily, she would've
checked and double checked

before she told
anybody about it.

If Carmen's still running
the show in Santa Luesa,

he's got to keep records.

They're probably in his office,

but you'd have to get in there.

I think Mike would
help us do that.

I think we better turn
this over to the police.

I mean, let them look into it.

No. Emily would
never have done that.

She would've checked it
out very, very carefully first.

I know well who she
got that lesson from.

- May I use your phone?
- Sure.

( phone ringing )

- Carmair.
- Mike, Jennifer Hart.

Jennifer, what can I do for you?

Is Alex there?

No, he hasn't been around
for about an hour. What's up?

Mike, do you think we could
get in to see Alex's files?

No, I don't think I can do that.

Why? What's the matter?

Mike...

we think Alex may
have killed Emily,

but we're not sure.
We have to make sure.

Can you help us?

Alex?

Oh.

Well, look... how
soon can you be here?

We're at the
newspaper right now.

We can be there in half an hour.

Okay.

Looking for something, Mike?

Ah, you know, Mr. Wainright
just called me up

and wanted me to
check his contract.

Yeah, those are
my files, I don't keep

my contracts in there.

Yeah, but I looked all
through the book, Al.

Well, I might've misplaced
them. Here, have a look.

- They're right here.
- Oh.

Michelle, I need all the
back issues you've got.

You what?

That's terrific. I'll be
over in 10 minutes.

The library has
all the back issues

of the "New York
Globe" on microfilm.

I'll get everything I
can on Albert Cortland.

When we get done at the
airport, we'll meet you back here.

Right. Jennifer...

I haven't sorted out
my feelings on all this,

but I am grateful to you. I...

Well, I better
get to the library.

Didn't Mike say
he'd meet us here?

He said he'd help us
get into Carmen's files.

Well, looks like my files
have become quite the fad.

You're playing a very
long shot, Mr. Cortland.

And we're not the only
ones who know who you are.

Well, if you're into long shots,
you'll know that killing you

is like a little water
in a very large bucket.

I'm going to
take a little flight.

Come on, Mr. Hart,
you can be first. Let's go.

Operator?

Operator!

No, no, no. Come on.

( yelps )

( motor whirring )

( tires squealing )

Listen, the police
know who you are.

Sooner or later we
have to land this thing.

Well, I appreciate
your concern, Mrs. Hart,

however, you see,
I've died once before,

though it might be
time for an encore.

It appears this plane
is destined to go down.

You could always
turn yourself in.

Oh no, I'll take my chances.

You see, when they find
two bodies in the crash,

they'll be quick
to forget about me.

( beeping )

Carmen?

The police have got an
all-state bulletin on you

and the FBI's been called in.

Unless you can fly
that thing to Mexico,

you haven't got a chance.

- Car...
- ( switch clicks )

You know, Mrs.
Hart, it's interesting,

since I've got you with
me, everybody is suddenly

interested in my health.

Well, have a nice landing.

Mike?

Mike!

Jonathan?

Jennifer, can you hear me?

Carmen bailed out and Mike's
in the back seat unconscious.

He's bailed out of the airplane?

Yes.

Darling, you can fly that plane.

Just maintain a steady course.

Can you keep it
on a steady course?

I'll try.

Jonathan: How
you doing? All right?

I'm fine.

Okay, hold it right there.

I'm going to go to another radio
outside where I can see you.

Hang on, I'll come back to
you on this same frequency.

Just keep it on that course.

Jennifer, look straight
ahead of you on the panel,

you'll see a compass.

What does it say on there?

It says "east."

Okay, turn the aircraft around.
Turn the wheel to the right.

Keep your nose up

and come around to 270 degrees,

you'll see a W.
That'll be due west.

All right, now...
what's your air speed?

Uh... 120 miles an hour.

All right, drop
the nose a little bit

and you'll notice that
you'll pick up some speed.

- You see that?
- Yes.

Now, raise it up again.
Bring the nose up a little bit.

And then you'll find out
that you'll be back about

on the same speed.
Do you see that?

Yes.

All right, now... you've got...

I see you now.

I see you're heading
back toward me.

Can you see the airstrip?

I don't know.

Things look very
different from up here.

Okay. Now, you're going...

You're going by me
and your gear is up

and I want you to
put the gear down.

So on your right, by your knee,

pull the knob up...
and then pull it back.

You feel the aircraft
slow down then?

Now, give it a little throttle,
just give it a little throttle

and you'll pick
up your air speed.

Okay, turn the airplane
to the right again,

like you did before, just
turn it easy to the right.

That's it, keep the nose up.

And head back this way.
You're coming by me again,

you're doing fine.

Now, let's pull the
throttle back a little bit.

Pull it up. Pull it up.

Pull it up, now.

Okay, now, turn the
aircraft to the right.

Turn it to the right. That's it.

Now, you're
approaching the strip.

Throttle back.

Keep your nose up.

Keep your nose up.

( tires squealing )

Throttle it back.

Okay, now, put your
toes on the brakes.

( screeching )

Good. Perfect.

( sighs )

Darling, you were
great. Are you all right?

What a landing.

Any landing is a good landing.

( sighing )

Well, now that
they've found Cortland,

what do you think they're
going to do with him?

Well, after they get
him back from the East,

they'll bring him
right back out here

and charge him with
first-degree murder.

I wish I could feel
some satisfaction,

but I can't stop
thinking about Emily.

There was so much
more she wanted to do.

Well, if it wasn't for Emily,
Cortland and $20 million worth

of drugs would be
on the street, and...

- take a look at that.
- What's that?

Jennifer: Agricultural
Committee?

They started an
inquiry on the possibility

of restricting the
use of pesticides.

Really?

And I think you'd
be very interested

in what's on page two.

Page two...?

All right.

- It's your finished story.
- Oh, so it is.

- Yeah.
- How did...

They brought it
over this morning.

I don't think Ben really
knew how to thank you.

Oh, well, that wouldn't
be necessary anyway.

I've had all the thanks I need.

I love you.
